Linus Torvalds 556eb8b791 Driver core changes for 6.4-rc1
Here is the large set of driver core changes for 6.4-rc1.

Once again, a busy development cycle, with lots of changes happening in
the driver core in the quest to be able to move "struct bus" and "struct
class" into read-only memory, a task now complete with these changes.

This will make the future rust interactions with the driver core more
"provably correct" as well as providing more obvious lifetime rules for
all busses and classes in the kernel.

The changes required for this did touch many individual classes and
busses as many callbacks were changed to take const * parameters
instead. All of these changes have been submitted to the various
subsystem maintainers, giving them plenty of time to review, and most of
 them actually did so.

Other than those changes, included in here are a small set of other
 things:
   - kobject logging improvements
   - cacheinfo improvements and updates
   - obligatory fw_devlink updates and fixes
   - documentation updates
   - device property cleanups and const * changes
   - firwmare loader dependency fixes.

All of these have been in linux-next for a while with no reported
 problems.

Daniel Vetter fffb0b52d5 fbcon: set_con2fb_map needs to set con2fb_map!
I got really badly confused in d443d93864 ("fbcon: move more common
code into fb_open()") because we set the con2fb_map before the failure
points, which didn't look good.

But in trying to fix that I moved the assignment into the wrong path -
we need to do it for _all_ vc we take over, not just the first one
(which additionally requires the call to con2fb_acquire_newinfo).

I've figured this out because of a KASAN bug report, where the
fbcon_registered_fb and fbcon_display arrays went out of sync in
fbcon_mode_deleted() because the con2fb_map pointed at the old
fb_info, but the modes and everything was updated for the new one.

Daniel Vetter edf79dd217 fbcon: Fix error paths in set_con2fb_map
This is a regressoin introduced in b07db39584 ("fbcon: Ditch error
handling for con2fb_release_oldinfo"). I failed to realize what the if
(!err) checks. The mentioned commit was dropping the
con2fb_release_oldinfo() return value but the if (!err) was also
checking whether the con2fb_acquire_newinfo() function call above
failed or not.

Fix this with an early return statement.

Note that there's still a difference compared to the orginal state of
the code, the below lines are now also skipped on error:

	if (!search_fb_in_map(info_idx))
		info_idx = newidx;

These are only needed when we've actually thrown out an old fb_info
from the console mappings, which only happens later on.

Also move the fbcon_add_cursor_work() call into the same if block,
it's all protected by console_lock so doesn't matter when we set up
the blinking cursor delayed work anyway. This further simplifies the
control flow and allows us to ditch the found local variable.

Daniel Vetter 6fd33a3333 fbmem: Reject FB_ACTIVATE_KD_TEXT from userspace
This is an oversight from dc5bdb68b5 ("drm/fb-helper: Fix vt
restore") - I failed to realize that nasty userspace could set this.

It's not pretty to mix up kernel-internal and userspace uapi flags
like this, but since the entire fb_var_screeninfo structure is uapi
we'd need to either add a new parameter to the ->fb_set_par callback
and fb_set_par() function, which has a _lot_ of users. Or some other
fairly ugly side-channel int fb_info. Neither is a pretty prospect.

Instead just correct the issue at hand by filtering out this
kernel-internal flag in the ioctl handling code.

Merge v6.3-rc4 into drm-next

I just landed the fence deadline PR from Rob that a bunch of drivers
want/need to apply driver-specific patches. Backmerge -rc4 so that
they don't have to be stuck on -rc2 for no reason at all.

Greg Kroah-Hartman 1aaba11da9 driver core: class: remove module * from class_create()
The module pointer in class_create() never actually did anything, and it
shouldn't have been requred to be set as a parameter even if it did
something. So just remove it and fix up all callers of the function in
the kernel tree at the same time.

Takashi Iwai fe9ae05cfb fbdev: Fix incorrect page mapping clearance at fb_deferred_io_release()
The recent fix for the deferred I/O by the commit
3efc61d952 ("fbdev: Fix invalid page access after closing deferred I/O devices")
caused a regression when the same fb device is opened/closed while
it's being used. It resulted in a frozen screen even if something
is redrawn there after the close. The breakage is because the patch
was made under a wrong assumption of a single open; in the current
code, fb_deferred_io_release() cleans up the page mapping of the
pageref list and it calls cancel_delayed_work_sync() unconditionally,
where both are no correct behavior for multiple opens.

This patch adds a refcount for the opens of the device, and applies
the cleanup only when all files get closed.

As both fb_deferred_io_open() and _close() are called always in the
fb_info lock (mutex), it's safe to use the normal int for the
refcounting.

Also, a useless BUG_ON() is dropped.

Thomas Zimmermann 93604a5ade fbdev: Handle video= parameter in video/cmdline.c
Handle the command-line parameter video= in video/cmdline.c. Implement
the fbdev helper fb_get_options() on top. Will allows to handle the
kernel parameter in DRM without fbdev dependencies.

Note that __video_get_options() has the meaning of its return value
inverted compared to fb_get_options(). The new helper returns true if
the adapter has been enabled, and false otherwise.

There is the ofonly parameter, which disables output for non-OF-based
framebuffers. It is only for offb and looks like a workaround. The actual
purpose it not clear to me. Use 'video=off' or 'nomodeset' instead.

Thomas Zimmermann 73ce73c30b fbdev: Transfer video= option strings to caller; clarify ownership
In fb_get_options(), always duplicate the returned option string and
transfer ownership of the memory to the function's caller.

Until now, only the global option string got duplicated and transferred
to the caller; the per-driver options were owned by fb_get_options().
In the end, it was impossible for the function's caller to detect if
it had to release the string's memory buffer. Hence, all calling drivers
leak the memory buffer. The leaks have existed ever since, but drivers
only call fb_get_option() once as part of module initialization. So the
amount of leaked memory is not significant.

Fix the semantics of fb_get_option() by unconditionally transferring
ownership of the memory buffer to the caller. Later patches can resolve
the memory leaks in the fbdev drivers.

Takashi Iwai 3efc61d952 fbdev: Fix invalid page access after closing deferred I/O devices
When a fbdev with deferred I/O is once opened and closed, the dirty
pages still remain queued in the pageref list, and eventually later
those may be processed in the delayed work. This may lead to a
corruption of pages, hitting an Oops.

This patch makes sure to cancel the delayed work and clean up the
pageref list at closing the device for addressing the bug. A part of
the cleanup code is factored out as a new helper function that is
called from the common fb_release().

Samuel Thibault 05e2600cb0 VT: Bump font size limitation to 64x128 pixels
This moves 32x32 font size limitation checking down to drivers, so that
fbcon can allow large fonts.

We still keep a limitation to 64x128 pixels so as to have a simple bounded

will however be enough to have 128x36 characters on a "16/9 8K display".

Samuel Thibault ffc1e08972 VT: Add height parameter to con_font_get/set consw operations
The current con_font_get/set API currently hardcodes a 32-pixel-tall
limitation, which only dates from the old VGA hardware which could not
handle taller fonts than that.

This change just adds a vpitch parameter to release this
constraint. Drivers which do not support vpitch != 32 can just return
EINVAL when it is not 32, font loading tools will revert to trying 32
and succeed.

This change makes the fbcon driver consider vpitch appropriately, thus
making it able to load large fonts.

Thomas Zimmermann 5b6373de43 drm/fbdev: Remove aperture handling and FBINFO_MISC_FIRMWARE
There are no users left of struct fb_info.apertures and the flag
FBINFO_MISC_FIRMWARE. Remove both and the aperture-ownership code
in the fbdev core. All code for aperture ownership is now located
in the fbdev drivers.

Thomas Zimmermann 12d5796d55 Revert "fbcon: don't lose the console font across generic->chip driver switch"
This reverts commit ae1287865f.

Always free the console font when deinitializing the framebuffer
console. Subsequent framebuffer consoles will then use the default
font. Rely on userspace to load any user-configured font for these
consoles.

Commit ae1287865f ("fbcon: don't lose the console font across
generic->chip driver switch") was introduced to work around losing
the font during graphics-device handover. [1][2] It kept a dangling
pointer with the font data between loading the two consoles, which is
fairly adventurous hack. It also never covered cases when the other
consoles, such as VGA text mode, where involved.

The problem has meanwhile been solved in userspace. Systemd comes
with a udev rule that re-installs the configured font when a console
comes up. [3] So the kernel workaround can be removed.

This also removes one of the two special cases triggered by setting
FBINFO_MISC_FIRMWARE in an fbdev driver.

Tested during device handover from efifb and simpledrm to radeon. Udev
reloads the configured console font for the new driver's terminal.

Thomas Zimmermann 0ba2fa8cbd fbdev: Add support for the nomodeset kernel parameter
Support the kernel's nomodeset parameter for all PCI-based fbdev
drivers that use aperture helpers to remove other, hardware-agnostic
graphics drivers.

The parameter is a simple way of using the firmware-provided scanout
buffer if the hardware's native driver is broken. The same effect
could be achieved with per-driver options, but the importance of the
graphics output for many users makes a single, unified approach
worthwhile.

With nomodeset specified, the fbdev driver module will not load. This
unifies behavior with similar DRM drivers. In DRM helpers, modules
first check the nomodeset parameter before registering the PCI
driver. As fbdev has no such module helpers, we have to modify each
driver individually.

The name 'nomodeset' is slightly misleading, but has been chosen for
historical reasons. Several drivers implemented it before it became a
general option for DRM. So keeping the existing name was preferred over
introducing a new one.

Thomas Zimmermann 7f5cc4a3e5 drm/fb-helper: Schedule deferred-I/O worker after writing to framebuffer
Schedule the deferred-I/O worker instead of the damage worker after
writing to the fbdev framebuffer. The deferred-I/O worker then performs
the dirty-fb update. The fbdev emulation will initialize deferred I/O
for all drivers that require damage updates. It is therefore a valid
assumption that the deferred-I/O worker is present.

It would be possible to perform the damage handling directly from within
the write operation. But doing this could increase the overhead of the
write or interfere with a concurrently scheduled deferred-I/O worker.
Instead, scheduling the deferred-I/O worker with its regular delay of
50 ms removes load off the write operation and allows the deferred-I/O
worker to handle multiple write operations that arrived during the delay
time window.

v2:
	* keep drm_fb_helper_damage() (Daniel)

Shigeru Yoshida a5a923038d fbdev: fbcon: Properly revert changes when vc_resize() failed
fbcon_do_set_font() calls vc_resize() when font size is changed.
However, if if vc_resize() failed, current implementation doesn't
revert changes for font size, and this causes inconsistent state.

syzbot reported unable to handle page fault due to this issue [1].
syzbot's repro uses fault injection which cause failure for memory
allocation, so vc_resize() failed.

This patch fixes this issue by properly revert changes for font
related date when vc_resize() failed.

Linus Torvalds 607ca0f742 TTY / Serial driver changes for 6.0-rc1
Here is the big set of tty and serial driver changes for 6.0-rc1.

It was delayed from last week as I wanted to make sure the last commit
here got some good testing in linux-next and elsewhere as it seemed to
show up only late in testing for some reason.

Nothing major here, just lots of cleanups from Jiri and Ilpo to make the
tty core cleaner (Jiri) and the rs485 code simpler to use (Ilpo). Also
included in here is the obligatory n_gsm updates from Daniel Starke and
lots of tiny driver updates and minor fixes and tweaks for other smaller
 serial drivers.

Merge tag 'tty-6.0-rc1' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/gregkh/tty

Pull tty / serial driver updates from Greg KH:
"Here is the big set of tty and serial driver changes for 6.0-rc1.

It was delayed from last week as I wanted to make sure the last commit
here got some good testing in linux-next and elsewhere as it seemed to
show up only late in testing for some reason.

Nothing major here, just lots of cleanups from Jiri and Ilpo to make
the tty core cleaner (Jiri) and the rs485 code simpler to use (Ilpo).

Also included in here is the obligatory n_gsm updates from Daniel
Starke and lots of tiny driver updates and minor fixes and tweaks for
  other smaller serial drivers.

All of these have been in linux-next for a while with no reported
  problems"

Daniel Vetter 5727dcfd84 fbdev: Make registered_fb[] private to fbmem.c
No driver access this anymore, except for the olpc dcon fbdev driver but
that has been marked as broken anyways by commit de0952f267 ("staging:
olpc_dcon: mark driver as broken").

Thomas Zimmermann 15fced5b05 fbdev: Remove conflict-handling code
Remove the call to do_remove_conflicting_framebuffers() from the
framebuffer registration. Aperture helpers take care of removing
conflicting devices. With all ownership information stored in the
aperture datastrcutures, remove remove_conflicting_framebuffers()
entirely.

This change also rectifies DRM generic-framebuffer registration, which
tried to unregister conflicting framebuffers, even though it's entirely
build on top of DRM.

v2:
	* remove internal aperture-overlap helpers, which are
	  now unused
