xtensa/simdisk: remove the call to check_disk_change
The simdisk driver doesn't support event notifications, which means that check_disk_change is a no-op. Signed-off-by: Christoph Hellwig <hch@lst.de> Signed-off-by: Jens Axboe <axboe@kernel.dk> |

block: move ->make_request_fn to struct block_device_operations
The make_request_fn is a little weird in that it sits directly in struct request_queue instead of an operation vector. Replace it with a block_device_operations method called submit_bio (which describes much better what it does). Also remove the request_queue argument to it, as the queue can be derived pretty trivially from the bio. Signed-off-by: Christoph Hellwig <hch@lst.de> Signed-off-by: Jens Axboe <axboe@kernel.dk> |

simdisk: stop using ->queuedata
Instead of setting up the queuedata as well just use one private data field. Signed-off-by: Christoph Hellwig <hch@lst.de> Signed-off-by: Jens Axboe <axboe@kernel.dk> |

block: simplify queue allocation
Current make_request based drivers use either blk_alloc_queue_node or blk_alloc_queue to allocate a queue, and then set up the make_request_fn function pointer and a few parameters using the blk_queue_make_request helper. Simplify this by passing the make_request pointer to blk_alloc_queue, and while at it merge the _node variant into the main helper by always passing a node_id, and remove the superfluous gfp_mask parameter. A lower-level __blk_alloc_queue is kept for the blk-mq case. Signed-off-by: Christoph Hellwig <hch@lst.de> Signed-off-by: Jens Axboe <axboe@kernel.dk> |

y2038: core, driver and file system changes
These are updates to device drivers and file systems that for some reason or another were not included in the kernel in the previous y2038 series. I've gone through all users of time_t again to make sure the kernel is in a long-term maintainable state, replacing all remaining references to time_t with safe alternatives. Some related parts of the series were picked up into the nfsd, xfs, alsa and v4l2 trees. A final set of patches in linux-mm removes the now unused time_t/timeval/timespec types and helper functions after all five branches are merged for linux-5.6, ensuring that no new users get merged. As a result, linux-5.6, or my backport of the patches to 5.4 [1], should be the first release that can serve as a base for a 32-bit system designed to run beyond year 2038, with a few remaining caveats: - All user space must be compiled with a 64-bit time_t, which will be supported in the coming musl-1.2 and glibc-2.32 releases, along with installed kernel headers from linux-5.6 or higher. - Applications that use the system call interfaces directly need to be ported to use the time64 syscalls added in linux-5.1 in place of the existing system calls. This impacts most users of futex() and seccomp() as well as programming languages that have their own runtime environment not based on libc. - Applications that use a private copy of kernel uapi header files or their contents may need to update to the linux-5.6 version, in particular for sound/asound.h, xfs/xfs_fs.h, linux/input.h, linux/elfcore.h, linux/sockios.h, linux/timex.h and linux/can/bcm.h. - A few remaining interfaces cannot be changed to pass a 64-bit time_t in a compatible way, so they must be configured to use CLOCK_MONOTONIC times or (with a y2106 problem) unsigned 32-bit timestamps. Most importantly this impacts all users of 'struct input_event'. - All y2038 problems that are present on 64-bit machines also apply to 32-bit machines. In particular this affects file systems with on-disk timestamps using signed 32-bit seconds: ext4 with ext3-style small inodes, ext2, xfs (to be fixed soon) and ufs. Changes since v1 [2]: - Add Acks I received - Rebase to v5.5-rc1, dropping patches that got merged already - Add NFS, XFS and the final three patches from another series - Rewrite etnaviv patches - Add one late revert to avoid an etnaviv regression [1] https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/arnd/playground.git/log/?h=y2038-endgame [2] https://lore.kernel.org/lkml/20191108213257.3097633-1-arnd@arndb.de/ -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v2 iQIcBAABCAAGBQJeMYy3AAoJEGCrR//JCVInEGwP/0R+S+ok7vw9OdLVT0lFl07D IcVabgOWf24imN7m7L7Mlt3nDfxIT4tMpiAXq7eMO3spcyViG18O2LXdSQ4/7QBp +BlhoMjOP9w34Jyd7mnkFr4vqQALvfIqkS8rFObDtDub2Rfj9PC36MRMIu8BPXlv RK8bigwJeH/DV38yc5/JeUcD+WuewYLsK9XPWN+4yB4vgGsNU3ZQQ6nnzbR3hMsN DN8WZ68Y7IBs0Kyxkf+s2zmRXtCa2RiFg/2TUsk5olVAJVaenvte69hq5RSbg1vW vLi6K8cBoPWL59nqCzcNE+TUhSUg3LOj/a/KWyl76yovz7AlJaNjssOf8ZjHw6sL MhQqz3hXTxiJDS2Jvbf1yojiYGlzrq/gqcRFGe9jPcZdieMc4/yZCx60G/Exa5Pu YdMcqMyDWPFyUAFQNWEF59HPheOdj6tb1KpJ6bwgCo3P7QqhLrU4z9w3Py4/ZfBO 4sWcWteSsD6MN/ADJ2WQ56nNxzM2AvkeVJKcF6FCkdngXX9T0GExmZz7SqB5Du99 9lNjIiD5E+LBa/Swo/7n49aYa8x06V1pmHYTZVh9Wkl+CZiO21umezQFrWsfaMTp xt3c6pFdMG5xNMGpreTAXOmf2R+T6O8IO2qQq/TYjzqOLH7QC830P7avkmml+cK1 LjOBE2TfSeO8Ru1dXV4t =wx0A -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- Merge tag 'y2038-drivers-for-v5.6-signed' of git://git.kernel.org:/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/arnd/playground Pull y2038 updates from Arnd Bergmann: "Core, driver and file system changes These are updates to device drivers and file systems that for some reason or another were not included in the kernel in the previous y2038 series. memblock: stop using implicit alignment to SMP_CACHE_BYTES
When a memblock allocation APIs are called with align = 0, the alignment is implicitly set to SMP_CACHE_BYTES. Implicit alignment is done deep in the memblock allocator and it can come as a surprise. Not that such an alignment would be wrong even when used incorrectly but it is better to be explicit for the sake of clarity and the prinicple of the least surprise. Replace all such uses of memblock APIs with the 'align' parameter explicitly set to SMP_CACHE_BYTES and stop implicit alignment assignment in the memblock internal allocation functions. For the case when memblock APIs are used via helper functions, e.g. like iommu_arena_new_node() in Alpha, the helper functions were detected with Coccinelle's help and then manually examined and updated where appropriate. block: Move SECTOR_SIZE and SECTOR_SHIFT definitions into <linux/blkdev.h>
It happens often while I'm preparing a patch for a block driver that I'm wondering: is a definition of SECTOR_SIZE and/or SECTOR_SHIFT available for this driver? Do I have to introduce definitions of these constants before I can use these constants? To avoid this confusion, move the existing definitions of SECTOR_SIZE and SECTOR_SHIFT into the <linux/blkdev.h> header file such that these become available for all block drivers. Make the SECTOR_SIZE definition in the uapi msdos_fs.h header file conditional to avoid that including that header file after <linux/blkdev.h> causes the compiler to complain about a SECTOR_SIZE redefinition. Note: the SECTOR_SIZE / SECTOR_SHIFT / SECTOR_BITS definitions have not been removed from uapi header files nor from NAND drivers in which these constants are used for another purpose than converting block layer offsets and sizes into a number of sectors. Pull core block layer updates from Jens Axboe: "This is the main pull request for block storage for 4.15-rc1. Nothing out of the ordinary in here, and no API changes or anything like that. Just various new features for drivers, core changes, etc. In particular, this pull request contains: - A patch series from Bart, closing the whole on blk/scsi-mq queue quescing. - A series from Christoph, building towards hidden gendisks (for multipath) and ability to move bio chains around. - NVMe - Support for native multipath for NVMe (Christoph). - Userspace notifications for AENs (Keith). - Command side-effects support (Keith). - SGL support (Chaitanya Kulkarni) - FC fixes and improvements (James Smart) - Lots of fixes and tweaks (Various) - bcache - New maintainer (Michael Lyle) - Writeback control improvements (Michael) - Various fixes (Coly, Elena, Eric, Liang, et al) - lightnvm updates, mostly centered around the pblk interface (Javier, Hans, and Rakesh). - Removal of unused bio/bvec kmap atomic interfaces (me, Christoph) - Writeback series that fix the much discussed hundreds of millions of sync-all units. This goes all the way, as discussed previously (me). - Fix for missing wakeup on writeback timer adjustments (Yafang Shao). - Fix laptop mode on blk-mq (me). - {mq,name} tupple lookup for IO schedulers, allowing us to have alias names. This means you can use 'deadline' on both !mq and on mq (where it's called mq-deadline). (me). - blktrace race fix, oopsing on sg load (me). - blk-mq optimizations (me). - Obscure waitqueue race fix for kyber (Omar). - NBD fixes (Josef). - Disable writeback throttling by default on bfq, like we do on cfq (Luca Miccio). - Series from Ming that enable us to treat flush requests on blk-mq like any other request. This is a really nice cleanup. - Series from Ming that improves merging on blk-mq with schedulers, getting us closer to flipping the switch on scsi-mq again. - BFQ updates (Paolo). - blk-mq atomic flags memory ordering fixes (Peter Z). - Loop cgroup support (Shaohua). - Lots of minor fixes from lots of different folks, both for core and driver code" * 'for-4.15/block' of git://git.kernel.dk/linux-block: (294 commits) nvme: fix visibility of "uuid" ns attribute blk-mq: fixup some comment typos and lengths ide: ide-atapi: fix compile error with defining macro DEBUG blk-mq: improve tag waiting setup for non-shared tags brd: remove unused brd_mutex blk-mq: only run the hardware queue if IO is pending block: avoid null pointer dereference on null disk fs: guard_bio_eod() needs to consider partitions xtensa/simdisk: fix compile error nvme: expose subsys attribute to sysfs nvme: create 'slaves' and 'holders' entries for hidden controllers block: create 'slaves' and 'holders' entries for hidden gendisks nvme: also expose the namespace identification sysfs files for mpath nodes nvme: implement multipath access to nvme subsystems nvme: track shared namespaces nvme: introduce a nvme_ns_ids structure nvme: track subsystems block, nvme: Introduce blk_mq_req_flags_t block, scsi: Make SCSI quiesce and resume work reliably block: Add the QUEUE_FLAG_PREEMPT_ONLY request queue flag ... |

Merge branch 'timers-core-for-linus' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/tip/tip
Pull timer updates from Thomas Gleixner: "Yet another big pile of changes: - More year 2038 work from Arnd slowly reaching the point where we need to think about the syscalls themself. - A new timer function which allows to conditionally (re)arm a timer only when it's either not running or the new expiry time is sooner than the armed expiry time. This allows to use a single timer for multiple timeout requirements w/o caring about the first expiry time at the call site. - A new NMI safe accessor to clock real time for the printk timestamp work. Can be used by tracing, perf as well if required. - A large number of timer setup conversions from Kees which got collected here because either maintainers requested so or they simply got ignored. As Kees pointed out already there are a few trivial merge conflicts and some redundant commits which was unavoidable due to the size of this conversion effort. - Avoid a redundant iteration in the timer wheel softirq processing. - Provide a mechanism to treat RTC implementations depending on their hardware properties, i.e. don't inflict the write at the 0.5 seconds boundary which originates from the PC CMOS RTC to all RTCs. No functional change as drivers need to be updated separately. - The usual small updates to core code clocksource drivers. block: remove __bio_kmap_atomic
This helper doesn't buy us much over calling kmap_atomic directly. In fact in the only caller it does a bit of useless work as the caller already has the bvec at hand, and said caller would even buggy for a multi-segment bio due to the use of this helper. So just remove it. Signed-off-by: Christoph Hellwig <hch@lst.de> Signed-off-by: Jens Axboe <axboe@kernel.dk> |

locking/atomics: COCCINELLE/treewide: Convert trivial ACCESS_ONCE() patterns to READ_ONCE()/WRITE_ONCE()
Please do not apply this to mainline directly, instead please re-run the coccinelle script shown below and apply its output. For several reasons, it is desirable to use {READ,WRITE}_ONCE() in preference to ACCESS_ONCE(), and new code is expected to use one of the former. So far, there's been no reason to change most existing uses of ACCESS_ONCE(), as these aren't harmful, and changing them results in churn. However, for some features, the read/write distinction is critical to correct operation. To distinguish these cases, separate read/write accessors must be used. This patch migrates (most) remaining ACCESS_ONCE() instances to {READ,WRITE}_ONCE(), using the following coccinelle script: ---- // Convert trivial ACCESS_ONCE() uses to equivalent READ_ONCE() and // WRITE_ONCE() // $ make coccicheck COCCI=/home/mark/once.cocci SPFLAGS="--include-headers" MODE=patch virtual patch @ depends on patch @ expression E1, E2; @@ - ACCESS_ONCE(E1) = E2 + WRITE_ONCE(E1, E2) @ depends on patch @ expression E; @@ - ACCESS_ONCE(E) + READ_ONCE(E) ---- Signed-off-by: Mark Rutland <mark.rutland@arm.com> Signed-off-by: Paul E. xtensa: don't use linux IRQ #0
Linux IRQ #0 is reserved for error reporting and may not be used. Increase NR_IRQS for one additional slot and increase irq_domain_add_legacy parameter first_irq value to 1, so that linux IRQ #0 is not associated with hardware IRQ #0 in legacy IRQ domains. Introduce macro XTENSA_PIC_LINUX_IRQ for static translation of xtensa PIC hardware IRQ # to linux IRQ #. Use this macro in XTFPGA platform data definitions. This fixes inability to use hardware IRQ #0 in configurations that don't use device tree and allows for non-identity mapping between linux IRQ # and hardware IRQ #. xtensa: ISS: allow simdisk to use high memory buffers
ISS kernel by default has only low memory. But it may be configured to support high memory and started in a simulator with more than 128M of RAM. Simdisk driver in such configuration can get IO request with a high memory page. There may be no TLB entry for that page, only page table entry. However simulators don't do pagewalking, so such IO request will fail. Touch IO buffer in the buffer read/write loop so that a TLB entry is likely there when read or write simcall is invoked.
