When setting mode via MODE_ID property,
drm_atomic_set_mode_prop_for_crtc() does not call
drm_mode_set_crtcinfo() which possibly causes:
"[drm:drm_calc_timestamping_constants [drm]] *ERROR* crtc 32: Can't
calculate constants, dotclock = 0!"
Whether the error is seen depends on the previous data in state->mode,
as state->mode is not cleared when setting new mode.
This patch adds drm_mode_set_crtcinfo() call to
drm_mode_convert_umode(), which is called in both legacy and atomic
paths. This should be fine as there's no reason to call
drm_mode_convert_umode() without also setting the crtc related fields.
drm_mode_set_crtcinfo() is removed from the legacy drm_mode_setcrtc() as
that is no longer needed.

Currently most drivers request that any mode appearing on both the
old mode list and the new probed_modes list get their type bits ORed
together if the modes are deemed to otherwise match each other.
I don't know why anyone would want to merge in the mode type bits
from any mode left over from a previous probe. For instance, you
could never get rid of ther preferred bit if a matching non-preferred
mode is returned by the new probe. So let's not merge anything from
the stale old modes, and just replace them outright with matching new
modes.
If multiple matching modes are produced by the same probe, merging
the type bits between them would seem like a sensible thing to do.
For a bit of extra finesse if two modes are considered equal we can
pick the actual timings from the one marked as preferrred. And if
multiple preferred modes are produced by the same probe somehow, we
can just favor the first one added to the probed_modes list.
You may be asking yourself why we bother with the merging at all if
nothing from the old list survives in practice. The only answer I have
is "debug output". That is we want to print out a list of pruned modes,
which is why we still want to look for duplicates with the old modes.
There was a previous attempt to get rid of the mode type merging
entirely, but it caused some kind of regression on Daniels's G33
machine. Apparently the sdvo transcoder on said machine started to
die at around the same time and has since rotted away totally, so
it may have been a red herring. So we don't have to worry about
it anymore. The relevant commits are:
commit 3fbd6439e4 ("drm: copy mode type in drm_mode_connector_list_update()")
commit abce1ec9b0 ("Revert "drm: copy mode type in drm_mode_connector_list_update()"")
It was then decided in
commit b87577b7c7 ("drm: try harder to avoid regression when merging mode bits")
that just qxl virtio are excluded from the merging, while everyone
else does it. That is not changed, although now even qxl and virtio
will be subject to the previously mentioned logic to choose which
actual timings are picked for the new mode.

Rather than using drm_match_cea_mode() to see if the EDID detailed
timings are supposed to represent one of the CEA/HDMI modes, add a
special version of that function that takes in an explicit clock
tolerance value (in kHz). When looking at the detailed timings specify
the tolerance as 5kHz due to the 10kHz clock resolution limit inherent
in detailed timings.
drm_match_cea_mode() uses the normal KHZ2PICOS() matching of clocks,
which only allows smaller errors for lower clocks (eg. for 25200 it
won't allow any error) and a bigger error for higher clocks (eg. for
297000 it actually matches 296913-297000). So it doesn't really match
what we want for the fixup. Using the explicit +-5kHz is much better
for this use case.
Not sure if we should change the normal mode matching to also use
something else besides KHZ2PICOS() since it allows a different
proportion of error depending on the clock. I believe VESA CVT
allows a maximum deviation of .5%, so using that for normal mode
matching might be a good idea?

Currently when a mode is rejected the reason is printed as a raw number.
Having to manually decode that to a enum drm_mode_status value is
tiresome. Have the code do the decoding instead and print the result
in a human readable format.
Just having an array of strings indexed with the mode status doesn't
work since the enum includes negative values. So we offset the status
by +3 which makes all the indexes non-negative. Also add a bit of
paranoia into the code to catch out of bounds accesses in case
someone adds more enum values but forgets to update the code.

Make sure the timings of probed modes at least pass some very basic
sanity checks.
The checks include:
- clock,hdisplay,vdisplay are non zero
- sync pulse fits within the blanking period
- htotal,vtotal are big enough
I have not checked all the drivers to see if the modes the generate
might violate these constraints. I'm hoping not, because that would mean
either abandoning the idea of doing this from the core code, or fixing
the drivers.
I'm not entirely sure about limiting the sync pulse to the blanking
period. Intel hardware doesn't support such things, but some other
hardware might. However at least HDMI doesn't allow having sync pulse
edges within the active period, so I'm thinking the check is probably
OK to have in the common code.

i915.ko has a custom fbdev initialisation routine that aims to preserve
the current mode set by the BIOS, unless overruled by the user. The
user's wishes are determined by what, if any, mode is specified on the
command line (via the video= parameter). However, that command line mode
is first parsed by drm_fb_helper_initial_config() which is called after
i915.ko's custom initial_config() as a fallback method. So in order for
us to honour it, we need to move the cmdline parser earlier. If we
perform the connector cmdline parsing as soon as we initialise the
connector, that cmdline mode and forced status is then available even if
the fbdev helper is not compiled in or never called.
We also then expose the cmdline user mode in the connector mode lists.

this adjustement if the driver is asking for it.

Both videomode and display_timing contain flags describing the modes.
These are stored in dmt_flags and data_flags. There's no need to
separate these flags, and having separate fields just makes the flags
more difficult to use.

This patch simplifies videomode related Kconfig and Makefile. After this
patch, there's only one non-user selectable Kconfig option left,
VIDEOMODE_HELPERS. The reasons for the change:
* Videomode helper functions are not something that should be shown in
the kernel configuration options. The related code should just be
included if it's needed, i.e. selected by drivers using videomode.
* There's no need to have separate Kconfig options for videomode and
display_timing. First of all, the amount of code for both is quite
small. Second, videomode depends on display_timing, and display_timing
in itself is not really useful, so both would be included in any case.
* CONFIG_VIDEOMODE is a bit vague name, and CONFIG_VIDEOMODE_HELPERS
describes better what's included.

Without this patch and the patch to make include the UAPI headers from the core

CEA actually specifies an interlaced mode with even vtotal and
supplies a diagram showing how this is supposed to work.
Note that interlaced modes with an even vtotal seem to be a fairly
recent invention. All modelines lore I could dig up with googling says
that vtotal for interlaced modes _needs_ to be odd. But the even
modelines in CEA are not a spec-bug, there's a figure in CEA-861-E
called "Figure 5 Special Interlaced Video Format Timing (Even Vtotal)"
that explains how it's supposed to work. Furthermore intel Bspec
explicitly mentions that both odd and even interlaced vtotal are
supported (VTOTAL register in the south display engine of PCH split
chips).

The video= parameter of the DRM drivers supports some additional flags that
the normal fb drivers do not have. They also allow to limit these flags to
specific outputs. Both things were previously undocumented.
Also the parsing of the line had some oddities:
-A lot of misplaced options were silently ignored or partly rejected instead
of stopping the parsing immediately
-The 'R' option is documented to follow the 'M' option if specified. It is not
documented that 'M' is needed to specify 'R' (also this is the case for normal
fb drivers). In fact the code is correct for normal fb drivers but wrong for
DRM ones.
The old code allowed 'R' only _before_ 'M' (since it parses backwards) and only
if 'M' is given at all which is not needed for the DRM drivers.
-the margins option ('m') was parsed but later ignored even if the later
functions support it.
-specifying multiple enable options at the same time did not lead to an error.
-specifying something bogus for horizontal resolution (i.e. other things as
digits) did not lead to an error but an invalid resolution was used.
If any errors are encountered the position of the faulting string is now
printed to the user and the complete mode is ignored. This gives much
more consistent error behaviour.
I also removed some useless assignments and changed the local flag variables
to be bool.

Before CVT-R, some monitors would advertise support for an alternative
GTF formula with lower blanking intervals. Correctly identify such
monitors, and use the alternative formula when generating modes for
them.
Note that we only do this for "standard" timing descriptors (tuples of
hsize in characters / aspect ratio / vertical refresh). Range-based
mode lists still only refer to the primary GTF curve. It would be
possible to do better for the latter case, but monitors are required to
support the primary curve over the entire advertised range, so all it
would win you is a lower pixel clock and therefore possibly better image
quality on analog links.

[note this requires an fb patch posted to linux-fbdev-devel already]
This uses the normal video= command line option to control the kms
output setup at boot time. It is used to override the autodetection
done by kms.
video= normally takes a framebuffer as the first parameter, in kms
it will take a connector name, DVI-I-1, or LVDS-1 etc. If no output
connector is specified the mode string will apply to all connectors.
The mode specification used will match down the probed modes, and if
no mode is found it will add a CVT mode that matches.
video=1024x768 - all connectors match a 1024x768 mode or add a CVT on
video=VGA-1:1024x768, VGA-1 connector gets mode only.
The same strings as used in current fb modedb.c are used, except I've
added three more letters, e, D, d, e = enable, D = enable Digital,
d = disable, which allow a connector to be forced into a certain state.

When we need to add the standard timing mode, we will firstly check whether it
can be found in DMT table by comparing the hdisplay/vdisplay/vfresh_rate.
If it can't be found, then we will use the cvt/gtf to add the required mode.
If it can be found, it will be returned.
At the same time the function of drm_mode_vrefresh is also fixed. It will
return the result of actual refresh_rate plus 0.5.
For example:
When the calculated value is 84.9, then the fresh_rate is 85.

The code which takes probed modes and adds them to a connector eliminates
duplicate modes by comparing them using drm_mode_equal. That function
doesn't consider the type bits, which means that any modes which differ only
in the type field will be lost.
One of the bits in the mode->type field is the DRM_MODE_TYPE_PREFERRED bit.
If the mode with that bit is lost, then higher level code will not know
which mode to select, causing a random mode to be used instead.
This patch simply merges the two mode type bits together; that seems
reasonable to me, but perhaps only a subset of the bits should be used? None
of these can be user defined as they all come from looking at just the
hardware.

Add mode setting support to the DRM layer.
This is a fairly big chunk of work that allows DRM drivers to provide
full output control and configuration capabilities to userspace. It was
motivated by several factors:
- the fb layer's APIs aren't suited for anything but simple
configurations
- coordination between the fb layer, DRM layer, and various userspace
drivers is poor to non-existent (radeonfb excepted)
- user level mode setting drivers makes displaying panic & oops
messages more difficult
- suspend/resume of graphics state is possible in many more
configurations with kernel level support
This commit just adds the core DRM part of the mode setting APIs.
Driver specific commits using these new structure and APIs will follow.
