Samuel Ortiz 8ccde88a87 iwl3945: Getting rid of the *39_rxon iwl_priv fields
The iwl_rxon_cmd is really just a iwl3945_rxon_cmd structure extension.
So, we can use the *_rxon fields from iwl_priv instead of the 3945 specific
ones (*39_rxon). We have to then be careful when submitting REPLY_RXON host
commands, since the command length as to be set according to the HW. As
another precaution the reserved4 and reserved5 fields are cleared before being
sent to the 3945.

With the *39_rxon removal, a lot of duplicated code can be removed from the
3945 code base.

Helmut Schaa 2663516d8f iwl3945: report killswitch changes even if the interface is down
Currently iwl3945 is not able to report hw-killswitch events while the
interface is down. This has implications on user space tools (like
NetworkManager) relying on rfkill notifications to bring the interface
up once the wireless gets enabled through a hw killswitch.

Thus, enable the device already in iwl3945_pci_probe instead of iwl3945_up
and poll the CSR_GP_CNTRL register to update the killswitch state every
two seconds. The polling is only needed on 3945 hardware as this adapter
does not use interrupts to signal rfkill changes to the driver (in case no
firmware is loaded). The firmware loading is still done in iwl3945_up.

Samuel Ortiz d20b3c65f2 iwl3945: iwl3945_queue and iwl3945_channel_info replacement
This patch replaces the queue and channel info 3945 structures with the iwl
ones.

The initial goal was to replace the channel info structure. Once we do that,
and then include iwl-dev.h instead of iwl-3945.h, we still get build errors
due to several routines and macro redefinitions. This is why this patch also
includes:
- TFD39_MAX_PAYLOAD definition for 3945.
- CMD_SIZE, CMD_HUGE, CMD_SKB duplication removal.
- iwl3945_queue replacement in order to also get rid of the duplicated
get_cmd_index routine.

Getting rid of any of those needs the iwl-dev.h inclusion which then creates
build errors due to definitions duplication. This is why we include all those
in the same patch.

Jouni Malinen b7a530d82c mac80211: Disable requests for new scans in AP mode
AP mode operations are seriously affected if mac80211 runs through a
multi-second scan while the AP is trying to send Beacon frames on the
operation channel. While this could be implemented in a way that does
not cause too many problems, it is not very simple and will require
synchronization with Beacon frame scheduling in the drivers (scan one
channel at a time between Beacon frames). Furthermore, such scanning
takes quite a bit longer time and existing userspace applications
would be likely to timeout while waiting for the results.

For now, just refuse requests for new scans (SIOCSIWSCAN) when in AP
mode. In practice, this moves the rejection from iwl* drivers into
mac80211 to make it apply to every mac80211-based driver.

This issue shows up in associated stations getting disconnected when
something (e.g., Network Manager) requests a scan while the interface
is in AP mode. When doing this continuously (e.g., NM does it every 120
seconds), the network gets close to useless.

Abhijeet Kolekar 011a03300b iwl3945 : Fix a-band association for passive channels
Patch does following things
    1) This patch fixes the a-band association for passive channels with new
uCode feature that it allows direct scan on passive channels after
auto-switch from passive to active. This enables sending of direct probes
on passive channels, as long as some traffic is detected on that channel.
This improves the scanning for hidden SSIDs in A-band,which is all
    passive channels.

This patch fixes the bug no 1748.

        http://www.intellinuxwireless.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=1748

    2) This fix will only work with uCode version 15.28.2.8 and above.
Prior versions of uCode would work only if we heard the traffic within
active dwell time, which is much shorter than passive dwell time and
is shorter than typical beacon periods. This patch also provids full
active dwell time even if we hear traffic late in passive dwell.

    3) uCode API version is incremented to 2.

Reinette Chatre a0987a8d68 iwlwifi: rely on API version read from firmware
This adds the infrastructure to support older firmware APIs.
The API version number is stored as part of the filename, we first try to
load the most recent firmware and progressively try lower versions.
The API version is also read from the firmware self and stored as part
of the iwl_priv structure. Only firmware that is supported by driver will
be loaded. The version number read from firmware is compared
to supported versions in the driver not the API version used as part of
filename.

An example using this new infrastrucure:
   if (IWL_UCODE_API(priv->ucode_ver) >= 2) {

Johannes Berg 8e3bad65a5 mac80211: remove ieee80211_notify_mac
Before ieee80211_notify_mac() was added, it was presented with the
use case of using it to tell mac80211 that the association may
have been lost because the firmware crashed/reset.

Since then, it has also been used by iwlwifi to (slightly) speed
up re-association after resume, a workaround around the fact that
mac80211 has no suspend/resume handling yet. It is also not used
by any other drivers, so clearly it cannot be necessary for "good
enough" suspend/resume.

Unfortunately, the callback suffers from a severe problem: It only
works for station mode. If suspend/resume happens while in IBSS or
any other mode (but station), then the callback is pointless.

Recently, it has created a number of locking issues, first because
it required rtnl locking rather than RCU due to calling sleeping
functions within the critical section, and now because it's called
by iwlwifi from the mac80211 workqueue that may not use the rtnl
because it is flushed under rtnl.
(cf. http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=12046)

I think, therefore, that we should take a step back, remove it
entirely for now and add the small feature it provided properly.
For suspend and resume we will need to introduce new hooks, and for
the case where the firmware was reset the driver will probably
simply just pretend it has done a suspend/resume cycle to get
mac80211 to reprogram the hardware completely, not just try to
connect to the current AP again in station mode. When doing so, we
will need to take into account locking issues and possibly defer
to schedule_work from within mac80211 for the resume operation,
while the suspend operation must be done directly.

Proper suspend/resume should also not necessarily try to reconnect
to the current AP, the time spent in suspend may have been short
enough to not be disconnected from the AP, mac80211 will detect
that the AP went out of range quickly if it did, and if the
association is lost then the AP will disassoc as soon as a data
frame is sent. We might also take into account WWOL then, and
have mac80211 program the hardware into such a mode where it is
available and requested.

Zhu, Yi 60294de3af iwlwifi: fix priv->iw_mode setting when multiple vif are configured
mac80211 supports multiple virtual interfaces for a single device. For
example, a managed interface (wlan0) and a monitor interface (mon0) can
exist at the same time. Thus priv->iw_mode is not sufficient to track
the wireless mode any more. The patch redefines priv->iw_mode as the
first interface mode (the same as priv->vif->type if priv->vif != NULL).
If another monitor type interface is created later, we don't change
priv->iw_mode into monitor. This way, the original interface still
works. The patch also requests mac80211 to do reassociation after we
change the Rx filter flags.

Johannes Berg e6a9854b05 mac80211/drivers: rewrite the rate control API
So after the previous changes we were still unhappy with how
convoluted the API is and decided to make things simpler for
everybody. This completely changes the rate control API, now
taking into account 802.11n with MCS rates and more control,
most drivers don't support that though.

we configure something else.

Johannes Berg 4b7679a561 mac80211: clean up rate control API
Long awaited, hard work. This patch totally cleans up the rate control
API to remove the requirement to include internal headers outside of
net/mac80211/.

There's one internal use in the PID algorithm left for mesh networking,
we'll have to figure out a way to clean that one up and decide how to
do the peer link evaluation, possibly independent of the rate control
algorithm or via new API.

Additionally, ath9k is left using the cross-inclusion hack for now, we
will add new API where necessary to make this work properly, but right
now I'm not expert enough to do it. It's still off better than before.

Harvey Harrison fd7c8a40b2 mac80211: add helpers for frame control testing
A few general categories:

1) ieee80211_has_* tests if particular fctl bits are set, the helpers are de
in the same order as the fctl defines:

A combined _has_a4 was also added to test when both FROMDS and TODS are set.

2) ieee80211_is_* is meant to test whether the frame control is of a certain
ftype - data, mgmt, ctl, and two special helpers _is_data_qos, _is_data_pres
which also test a subset of the stype space.

When testing for a particular stype applicable only to one ftype, functions
like ieee80211_is_ack have been added. Note that the ftype is also being
checked in these helpers. They have been added for all mgmt and ctl stypes
in the same order as the STYPE defines.

3) ieee80211_get_* is meant to take a struct ieee80211_hdr * and returns a
pointer to somewhere in the struct, see get_SA, get_DA, get_qos_ctl.

The intel wireless drivers had helpers that used this namespace, convert the
all to use the new helpers and remove the byteshifting as they were defined
in cpu-order rather than little-endian.

Bruno Randolf 566bfe5a8b mac80211: use hardware flags for signal/noise units
trying to clean up the signal/noise code. the previous code in mac80211 had
confusing names for the related variables, did not have much definition of
what units of signal and noise were provided and used implicit mechanisms from
the wireless extensions.

this patch introduces hardware capability flags to let the hardware specify
clearly if it can provide signal and noise level values and which units it can
provide. this also anticipates possible new units like RCPI in the future.

for signal:

IEEE80211_HW_SIGNAL_UNSPEC - unspecified, unknown, hw specific
IEEE80211_HW_SIGNAL_DB - dB difference to unspecified reference point
  IEEE80211_HW_SIGNAL_DBM - dBm, difference to 1mW

for noise we currently only have dBm:

  IEEE80211_HW_NOISE_DBM - dBm, difference to 1mW

if IEEE80211_HW_SIGNAL_UNSPEC or IEEE80211_HW_SIGNAL_DB is used the driver has
to provide the maximum value (max_signal) it reports in order for applications
to make sense of the signal values.

i tried my best to find out for each driver what it can provide and update it
but i'm not sure (?) for some of them and used the more conservative guess in
doubt. this can be fixed easily after this patch has been merged by changing
the hardware flags of the driver.

Bill Moss 15dbf1b7b7 iwl3945: do not delay hardware scan if it is a direct scan
iwl3945 <---> mac80211 <----> wpa_supplicant <---> NetworkManager

When a hardware scan is completed and another scan is requested in less
than two seconds, iwlwifi will not do the second scan and will pass the
error code -EAGAIN back to mac80211 where it quickly dies. The error
code is not passed along to the calling program wpa_supplicant. After a
timeout, wpa_supplicant will just give up but it will not know why the
scan failed. This is a weakness in the design.

I ran into this issue when I was trying to figure out why it takes more
an a minute for NetworkManager to connect after Networking has been
disabled and then re-enabled. I found a good deal of unnecessary work
being done because mac80211 requests authentication when the interface
is not configured, the ANY mode. I created an experimental passive
(NOTANY) mode for mac80211 to eliminate this case. Then NetworkManager
became so fast that I ran into the iwlwifi 2 second delay next scan
issue which we are discussing.

The patch resolves the problem by bypassing the delay if the scan request
is a direct scan. It should do less harm to the hardware.

 * removes the useless queue number defines
 * splits hw->queues into hw->queues/ampdu_queues
 * removes the debugfs files for per-queue counters

Ivo van Doorn 1c01442058 mac80211: Replace ieee80211_tx_control->key_idx with ieee80211_key_conf
The hw_key_idx inside the ieee80211_key_conf structure does
not provide all the information drivers might need to perform
hardware encryption.

This is in particular true for rt2x00 who needs to know the
key algorithm and whether it is a shared or pairwise key.

By passing the ieee80211_key_conf pointer it assures us that
drivers can make full use of all information that it should know
about a particular key.

Additionally this patch updates all drivers to grab the hw_key_idx from
the ieee80211_key_conf structure.

Mohamed Abbas ab53d8af67 iwlwifi: Add led support
This patch add LEDS support to 3965 and 4965 drivers. It is based on
led trigger and class. For our drivers we needed to avoid two things.
1- We receive led trigger on/off on each Rx\Tx frame. In our driver
we can not call led command like that. In this driver once driver
receive a start of traffic it call the led command to start blinking
then we count all bytes of Tx and Rx frame, after two second we count the
blink rate of last two second then id blink rate changed we call the led
     commands
2- Since we can call led command very often, we make sure we call the
led command after we receive the statistics notification so
we don't need to wake up the ucode id it is in sleep state.
This patch was tested with 4965 and 3945.
