Up until now we have only used cpu_to_chip_id() in the topology code,
which is only used on SMP builds. However my recent commit a4da0d5
"Implement arch_get_random_long/int() for powernv" added a usage when
SMP=n, breaking the build.
Move cpu_to_chip_id() into prom.c so it is available for SMP=n builds.
We would move the extern to prom.h, but that breaks the include in
topology.h. Instead we leave it in smp.h, but move it out of the
CONFIG_SMP #ifdef. We also need to include asm/smp.h in rng.c, because
the linux version skips asm/smp.h on UP. What a mess.

I encountered following issue:
[ 0.283035] ibmvscsi 30000015: couldn't initialize event pool
[ 5.688822] ibmvscsi: probe of 30000015 failed with error -1
which prevents the storage from being recognized, and the machine from
booting.
After some digging, it seems that it is caused by commit 4886c399da
as dma_mask pointer in viodev->dev is not set, so in
dma_set_mask_and_coherent(), dma_set_coherent_mask() is not called
because dma_set_mask(), which is dma_set_mask_pSeriesLP() returned EIO.
While before the commit, dma_set_coherent_mask() is always called.
I tried to replace dma_set_mask_and_coherent() with
dma_coerce_mask_and_coherent(), and the machine could boot again.

Commit fba2369e6c (mm: use vm_unmapped_area() on powerpc architecture)
has a bug in slice_scan_available() where we compare an unsigned long
(high_slices) against a shifted int. As a result, comparisons against
the top 32 bits of high_slices (representing the top 32TB) always
returns 0 and the top of our mmap region is clamped at 32TB
This also breaks mmap randomisation since the randomised address is
always up near the top of the address space and it gets clamped down
to 32TB.

get_futex_key() in kernel/futex.c) and therefore should use local_irq_save()

On PHB3, we will fail to fetch IODA tables without PCI_COMMAND_MASTER
on PCI bridges. According to one experiment I had, the MSIx interrupts
didn't raise from the adapter without the bit applied to all upstream
PCI bridges including root port of the adapter. The patch forces to
have that bit enabled accordingly.

Pull powerpc LE updates from Ben Herrenschmidt:
"With my previous pull request I mentioned some remaining Little Endian
patches, notably support for our new ABI, which I was sitting on
making sure it was all finalized.
The toolchain folks confirmed it now, the new ABI is stable and merged
with gcc, so we are all good. Oh and we actually missed the actual
Kconfig switch for LE so here it is, along with a couple more bug
fixes.
I have more fixes but not related to LE so I'll send them as a
separate pull request tomorrow, let's get this one out of the way.
Note that this supports running user space binaries using the new ABI,
but the kernel itself still needs to be built with the old one. We'll
bring fixes for that after -rc1.

The ARM architected timer driver doesn't compile without
GENERIC_CLOCKEVENTS selected, so ensure that we select it when building
for a platform that has the timer.
Without this patch, mach-virt fails to build without something like
mach-vexpress also selected.

Uwe reported a build failure when targetting a NOMMU platform with my
recent prefetch changes:

This is due to use of the .arch_extension mp directive immediately prior
to an ALT_SMP(...) instruction. Whilst the ALT_SMP macro will expand to
nothing if !CONFIG_SMP, gas will still choke on the directive.
This patch fixes the issue by only emitting the sequence (including the
directive) if CONFIG_SMP=y.

I've finally tracked down why my CR signal-unwind test case still
fails on little-endian. The problem turned to be that the kernel
installs a signal trampoline in the vDSO, and provides a DWARF CFI
record for that trampoline. This CFI describes the save location
for CR:
rsave (70, 38*RSIZE + (RSIZE - CRSIZE))
which is correct for big-endian, but points to the wrong word on
little-endian. This is wrong no matter which ABI.
In addition, for the ELFv2 ABI, we should not only provide a CFI
record for register 70 (cr2), but for all CR fields separately.
Strictly speaking, I guess this would mean providing two separate
vDSO images, one for ELFv1 processes and one for ELFv2 processes (or
maybe playing some tricks with conditional DWARF expressions).
However, having CFI records for the other CR fields in ELFv1 is not
actually wrong, they just will be ignored. So it seems the simplest
fix would be just to always provide CFI for all the fields.

We also need to set up r12, and fortunately the fast_exception_return

Little endian ppc64 is getting an exciting new ABI. This is reflected
by the bottom two bits of e_flags in the ELF header:
0 == legacy binaries (v1 ABI)
1 == binaries using the old ABI (compiled with a new toolchain)
2 == binaries using the new ABI.
We store this in a thread flag, because we need to set it in core
dumps and for signal delivery. Our chief concern is that it doesn't
use function descriptors.

The timer code for at91rm9200 was already converted some time ago by
Shawn Guo in commit 838a2ae (ARM: use clockevents_config_and_register()
where possible) but because of a rounding issue in the timer core this
resulted in an easily reproducible oops. So it was reverted (commit
b7a8ca5 (ARM: at91: rm9200 fix time support)) which stopped the oops
from happening because min_delta_ns is increased by one in arch code
which stopped from problem from happening.
Now that the timer core problem is fixed (commit a4578ea (clockevents:
Sanitize ticks to nsec conversion)), we can switch back to the
clockevents_config_and_register helper.

For all uapi headers, need use "_UAPI" prefix for its guard macro
(which will be stripped by "scripts/headers_installer.sh").
Also remove redundant files (bitsperlong.h, errno.h, fcntl.h, ioctl.h,
ioctls.h, ipcbuf.h, kvm_para.h, mman.h, poll.h, resource.h, siginfo.h,
statfs.h, and unistd.h) which are already in Kbuild.
Also be sure that all "#endif" only have one empty line above, and each
file has guard macro.

It comes up when the kernel increases and 'panic()' is too far away to fit in
the +/- 2MiB range. Which in turn issues from the 21-bit displacement in
'br{cond4}' mnemonic which is one of the two ways to do jumps (rjmp has just
10-bit displacement and therefore a way smaller range). This fact was stated
before in 8d29b7b9f8.
One solution to solve this is to add a local storage for the symbol address
and just load the $pc with that value.

Always use the mvcl instruction to copy a page instead of mvpg or a
couple of mvc instructions.
Copying a huge page is 25% faster this way. Also bypass caches when
copying pages since only parts of a page will be used afterwards.
Especially when copying a huge page this would kick everything out
of the L1 and L2 data caches on a zEC12 machine.

Commit "s390: fix handling of runtime instrumentation psw bit" (5ebf250dab)
changed the behavior of setting the runtime instrumentation psw bit. This
commit restores the original logic:
1. When returning from the signal handler, the runtime instrumentation psw bit
is restored to its saved state.
2. If the runtime instrumentation psw bit is enabled during the signal handler,
it is always turned off when leaving the signal handler. The saved state
is restored as described in 1. That also implies that turning on runtime
instrumentation in the signal handler is only effective while running in the
signal context.

gcc (4.8.x) creates wrong code when the pa_memcpy() functions are
inlined. Especially in 32bit builds it calculates wrong return values
if we encounter a fault during execution of the memcpy.

It broke userspace and adding more checking is not needed.
Even checking if a syscall would access memory in page zero doesn't
makes sense since it may lead to some syscalls returning -EFAULT
where we would return other error codes on other platforms.
In summary, just drop this change and return to always return 1.

Vince's perf-trinity fuzzer found yet another 'interesting' problem.
When we sample the irq_work_exit tracepoint with period==1 (or
PERF_SAMPLE_PERIOD) and we add an fasync SIGNAL handler we create an
infinite event generation loop:

tracepoint perf event.

Commit 26273e02a0 (ARM: OMAP2+: Fix build for dra7xx without
omap4 and 5) attempted to fix randconfig found errors for
redefinition of omap44xx_prm_reconfigure_io_chain, but was
not enough.
We need to check for AM43XX without any omap4 or 5 related
SoCs as well. And looks like we have prm44xx.o built always
anyways with omap-4-5-prcm-common because of the calls to
omap4_prm_vp_clear_txdone, so we can remove the duplicate
entries in the Makefile.

The spdif "rxtx5" clock option is being set to ipg clk (62) by mistake.
This causes an incorrect time keeping when spdif driver is running,
because ipg is ancestor clock for clocksource while spdif driver will
change the rate of this clock in certain circumstance. Before the
correct clock for "rxtx5" option can be supplied, let's disable this
option for now by filling a dummy clock for it.

On CSR SiRFprimaII and SiRFatlasVI, the 6th timer can act as a watchdog
timer when the Watchdog mode is enabled.
watchdog occur when TIMER watchdog counter matches the value software
pre-set, when this event occurs, the effect is the same as the system
software reset.

arch/um/defconfig only lists one default configuration, and that applies
only to the i386 architecture. Replace it with two minimal
configuration files generated using `make savedefconfig`:
i386_defconfig and x86_64_defconfig
The build scripts now require two updates:
1. um's Kconfig (arch/x86/um/Kconfig) should specify an ARCH_DEFCONFIG
section explicitly pointing to these scripts if the required
variables are set. Take care to remove the DEFCONFIG_LIST section
defined in the included file arch/um/Kconfig.common.
2. um's Makefile (arch/um/Makefile) should set KBUILD_DEFCONFIG properly
for the top-level Makefile to pick up. Copy the logic in
arch/x86/Makefile to properly pick the defconfig file depending on
the actual architecture; except we're working with $SUBARCH here,
instead of $ARCH.
Now, you can do:
$ ARCH=um make defconfig
$ ARCH=um make
and successfully build User-Mode Linux on an x86_64 box in default
configuration.

As UML uses an alternative signal stack we cannot use
the current stack pointer for stack dumping if UML itself
dies by SIGSEGV. To bypass this issue we save regs taken
from mcontext in our segv handler into thread_struct and
use these regs to obtain the stack pointer in show_stack().

x86 and x86_64 have their on implementations.

Using virt_to_phys on percpu mappings is horribly wrong as it may be
backed by vmalloc. Introduce kvm_kaddr_to_phys which translates both
types of valid kernel addresses to the corresponding physical address.
At the same time resolves a typing issue where we were storing the
physical address as a 32 bit unsigned long (on arm), truncating the
physical address for addresses above the 4GB limit. This caused
breakage on Keystone.

This is due to the raw event encoding being used as an index directly
into the ev67_mapping array, rather than being validated against the
ev67_pmc_event_type enumeration instead. Unlike other architectures,
which allow raw events to propagate into the hardware counters with
little interference, the limited number of events on Alpha and the
strict event <-> counter relationships mean that raw events actually
correspond to the Linux-specific Alpha events, rather than anything
defined by the architecture.
This patch adds a new callback to alpha_pmu_t for validating the raw
event encoding with the Linux event types for the PMU, preventing the
out-of-bounds array access.

Discontinue use of GENERIC_CMOS_UPDATE; rely on the RTC subsystem.
The marvel platform requires that the rtc only be touched from the
boot cpu. This had been partially implemented with hooks for
get/set_rtc_time, but read/update_persistent_clock were not handled.
Move the hooks from the machine_vec to a special rtc_class_ops struct.
We had read_persistent_clock managing the epoch against which the
rtc hw is based, but this didn't apply to get_rtc_time or set_rtc_time.
This resulted in incorrect values when hwclock(8) gets involved.
Allow the epoch to be set from the kernel command-line, overriding
the autodetection, which is doomed to fail in 2020. Further, by
implementing the rtc ioctl function, we can expose this epoch to
userland.
Elide the alarm functions that RTC_DRV_CMOS implements. This was
highly questionable on Alpha, since the interrupt is used by the
system timer.

Use WTINT to wait for the next interrupt. Squash the WTINT call
if the PALcode doesn't support it (e.g. MILO). No attempt is yet
made to skip clock ticks during normal scheduling in order to stay
in power down mode longer.

3/ Testing the raid related corner cases of 1/ triggered bugs in the

Looks like we're missing few entries for omap2 and the drivers
have only worked because of the omap hwmod building the devices
for the missing entries.
Let's fix the missing entries so we don't need to rely on hwmod
for the basic data and can then later on remove the duplicate
data from hwmod. Otherwise device tree only drivers will not
work properly.

Commit f2bf0e72d0 (ARM: OMAP2+: Add minimal 8250 support
for GPMC) added support for using bootloader timings for some
devices. Turns out we can do the same by looking at the compatible
flags of the child without adding a new function as smc91x has
a similar issue as 8250 with the bootloader timings.
And let's fix the 8250 naming, we should use the device type as
the name like uart instead of 8250 for zoom dts file.

OMAP device hooks around suspend|resume_noirq ensures that hwmod
devices are forced to idle using omap_device_idle/enable as part of
the last stage of suspend activity.
For a device such as i2c who uses autosuspend, it is possible to enter
the suspend path with dev->power.runtime_status = RPM_ACTIVE.
As part of the suspend flow, the generic runtime logic would increment
it's dev->power.disable_depth to 1. This should prevent further
pm_runtime_get_sync from succeeding once the runtime_status has been
set to RPM_SUSPENDED.
Now, as part of the suspend_noirq handler in omap_device, we force the
following: if the device status is !suspended, we force the device
to idle using omap_device_idle (clocks are cut etc..). This ensures
that from a hardware perspective, the device is "suspended". However,
runtime_status is left to be active.
*if* an operation is attempted after this point to
pm_runtime_get_sync, runtime framework depends on runtime_status to
indicate accurately the device status, and since it sees it to be
ACTIVE, it assumes the module is functional and returns a non-error
value. As a result the user will see pm_runtime_get succeed, however a
register access will crash due to the lack of clocks.
To prevent this from happening, we should ensure that runtime_status
exactly indicates the device status. As a result of this change
any further calls to pm_runtime_get* would return -EACCES (since
disable_depth is 1). On resume, we restore the clocks and runtime
status exactly as we suspended with. These operations are not expected
to fail as we update the states after the core runtime framework has
suspended itself and restore before the core runtime framework has
resumed.

Stop hiding scm_block's dependency to the eadm subchannel driver
(by using functions provided by the eadm subchannel instead of
wrappers provided by the scm bus).
This will help userspace recognizing module dependencies (e.g. for
building a ramdisk). As a side effect we can get rid of some code
reimplementing refcounting between those modules.

Make sure the RTT-interrupts are masked at boot by adding a new helper
function to be used at SOC-init.
This fixes hanged boot on all AT91 SOCs with an RTT, for example, if an
RTT-alarm goes off after a non-clean shutdown (e.g. when using RTC
wakeup).
The RTC and RTT-peripherals are powered by backup power (VDDBU) (on all
AT91 SOCs but RM9200) and are not reset on wake-up, user, watchdog or
software reset. This means that their interrupts may be enabled during
early boot if, for example, they where not disabled during a previous
shutdown (e.g. due to a buggy driver or a non-clean shutdown such as a
user reset). Furthermore, an RTC or RTT-alarm may also be active.
The RTC and RTT-interrupts use the shared system-interrupt line, which
is also used by the PIT, and if an interrupt occurs before a handler
(e.g. RTC-driver) has been installed this leads to the system interrupt
being disabled and prevents the system from booting.
Note that when boot hangs due to an early RTC or RTT-interrupt, the only
way to get the system to start again is to remove the backup power (e.g.
battery) or to disable the interrupt manually from the bootloader. In
particular, a user reset is not sufficient.

Openrisc's private vmlinux.h duplicates a few definitions that are already
provided by asm-generic/sections.h. The former is used by setup.c only,
while the latter is already used everywhere else.
Convert setup.c to use the generic version:

For BF537_FAMILY, when offset != 1, the mask is 1.
Thus add proper mask for comparing pfunc with function.
Also has small refactor for better readability.
In portmux_setup(), it looks odd having "pmux &= ~(3 << 1);"
while in current code we do pmux |= (function << offset);.

Commit 9ebddac7ea "ACPI, x86: Fix extended error log driver to depend on
CONFIG_X86_LOCAL_APIC" fixed a build error when CONFIG_X86_LOCAL_APIC was not
selected and !CONFIG_SMP.
However, since CONFIG_ACPI_EXTLOG is tristate, there is a second build error:
ERROR: "boot_cpu_physical_apicid" [drivers/acpi/acpi_extlog.ko] undefined!
The symbol needs to be exported for it to be available.

The ARC 700 does not have an interrupt associated with it, and as
such it cannot trigger when a counter overflows. As the counters are
48 bit, it will usually take at least 100 days before a counter
overflows, so for mere counting of events, there is no problem.

If split page table lock is in use, we embed the lock into struct page
of table's page. We have to disable split lock, if spinlock_t is too
big be to be embedded, like when DEBUG_SPINLOCK or DEBUG_LOCK_ALLOC
enabled.
This patch add support for dynamic allocation of split page table lock
if we can't embed it to struct page.
page->ptl is unsigned long now and we use it as spinlock_t if
sizeof(spinlock_t) <= sizeof(long), otherwise it's pointer to spinlock_t.
The spinlock_t allocated in pgtable_page_ctor() for PTE table and in
pgtable_pmd_page_ctor() for PMD table. All other helpers converted to
support dynamically allocated page->ptl.

At the moment xtensa uses slab allocator for PTE table. It doesn't work
with enabled split page table lock: slab uses page->slab_cache and
page->first_page for its pages. These fields share stroage with
page->ptl.

In split page table lock case, we embed spinlock_t into struct page.
For obvious reason, we don't want to increase size of struct page if
spinlock_t is too big, like with DEBUG_SPINLOCK or DEBUG_LOCK_ALLOC or
on -rt kernel. So we disable split page table lock, if spinlock_t is
too big.
This patchset allows to allocate the lock dynamically if spinlock_t is
big. In this page->ptl is used to store pointer to spinlock instead of
spinlock itself. It costs additional cache line for indirect access,
but fix page fault scalability for multi-threaded applications.
LOCK_STAT depends on DEBUG_SPINLOCK, so on current kernel enabling
LOCK_STAT to analyse scalability issues breaks scalability. ;)
The patchset mostly fixes this. Results for ./thp_memscale -c 80 -b 512M
on 4-socket machine:
baseline, no CONFIG_LOCK_STAT: 9.115460703 seconds time elapsed
baseline, CONFIG_LOCK_STAT=y: 53.890567123 seconds time elapsed
patched, no CONFIG_LOCK_STAT: 8.852250368 seconds time elapsed
patched, CONFIG_LOCK_STAT=y: 11.069770759 seconds time elapsed

Patches 9-33 Add pgtable_page_ctor() fail handling to all archs.

I've missed that we preallocate few pmds on pgd_alloc() if X86_PAE
enabled. Let's add missed constructor/destructor calls.
I haven't noticed it during testing since prep_new_page() clears
page->mapping and therefore page->ptl. It's effectively equal to
spin_lock_init(&page->ptl).

Currently mm->pmd_huge_pte protected by page table lock. It will not
work with split lock. We have to have per-pmd pmd_huge_pte for proper
access serialization.
For now, let's just introduce wrapper to access mm->pmd_huge_pte.

CONFIG_NO_HZ_FULL requires possibility of smp_send_reschedule()
for the calling CPU. Currently, it is used in inc_nr_running()
scheduler primitive only.
Nobody calls smp_send_reschedule() from preemptible context
(furthermore, it looks like it will be save if anybody use it
another way in the future). But anyway I add WARN_ON() here
just to return here if anything changes.

The SIMBA APB Bridges lacks the 'ranges' of-property describing the
PCI I/O and memory areas located beneath the bridge. Faking this
information has been performed by reading range registers in the
APB bridge, and calculating the corresponding areas.
In commit 01f94c4a6c
("Fix sabre pci controllers with new probing scheme.") a bug was
introduced into this calculation, causing the PCI memory areas
to be calculated incorrectly: The shift size was set to be
identical for I/O and MEM ranges, which is incorrect.
This patch set the shift size of the MEM range back to the
value used before 01f94c4a6c.

Modify struct acpi_dev_node to contain a pointer to struct acpi_device
associated with the given device object (that is, its ACPI companion
device) instead of an ACPI handle corresponding to it. Introduce two
new macros for manipulating that pointer in a CONFIG_ACPI-safe way,
ACPI_COMPANION() and ACPI_COMPANION_SET(), and rework the
ACPI_HANDLE() macro to take the above changes into account.
Drop the ACPI_HANDLE_SET() macro entirely and rework its users to
use ACPI_COMPANION_SET() instead. For some of them who used to
pass the result of acpi_get_child() directly to ACPI_HANDLE_SET()
introduce a helper routine acpi_preset_companion() doing an
equivalent thing.
The main motivation for doing this is that there are things
represented by struct acpi_device objects that don't have valid
ACPI handles (so called fixed ACPI hardware features, such as
power and sleep buttons) and we would like to create platform
device objects for them and "glue" them to their ACPI companions
in the usual way (which currently is impossible due to the
lack of valid ACPI handles). However, there are more reasons
why it may be useful.
First, struct acpi_device pointers allow of much better type checking
than void pointers which are ACPI handles, so it should be more
difficult to write buggy code using modified struct acpi_dev_node
and the new macros. Second, the change should help to reduce (over
time) the number of places in which the result of ACPI_HANDLE() is
passed to acpi_bus_get_device() in order to obtain a pointer to the
struct acpi_device associated with the given "physical" device,
because now that pointer is returned by ACPI_COMPANION() directly.
Finally, the change should make it easier to write generic code that
will build both for CONFIG_ACPI set and unset without adding explicit
compiler directives to it.

CPU reset handler was set before fuse is initialized, but
tegra_cpu_reset_handler_enable() uses tegra_chip_id, which is set by
tegra_init_fuse(). This patch reorders the calls so the CPU reset
handler code does not read an uninitialized variable.

Add a single-vendor config for vt8500. We can't enable WM8750 in
multi_v7_defconfig since it's a v6-based device, but it's still valuable
to have an in-tree defconfig that is suitable for the hardware.
This is based on multi_v7_defconfig and can be tweaked over time. It
gets us off the ground for now. Naming it vt8500_v6_v7 similar to i.MX
since there are v5-based vt8500 chips as well.

Make sure that seccomp filter won't be built when ARM OABI is in use,
since there is work needed to distinguish calling conventions. Until
that is done (which is likely never since OABI is deprecated), make

LPAE enabled kernels use the 64-bit version of TTBR0 and TTBR1
registers. If we're running an LPAE kernel, fill the upper half
of TTBR0 with 0 because we're setting it to the idmap here (the
idmap is guaranteed to be < 4Gb) and fully restore TTBR1 instead
of just restoring the lower 32 bits. Failure to do so can cause
failures on resume from suspend when these registers are only
half restored.

ECC policy can be applied to the whole system
when this bit is implemented by SoC vendor
(IMP - bit 9 - in L1 page table entry format).
When this bit is not implemented by SoC vendor
it doesn't mean that system has no other way
how to do ECC.
This patch ensures to show this message only when ECC
is requested via cmd line ecc=on and runs on
appropriate ARM core.

Make sure that inline assembler that expects 'r' operand
receives 32 bit value.
Before this fix in case of CONFIG_ARCH_PHYS_ADDR_T_64BIT and
CONFIG_ARM_PATCH_PHYS_VIRT __phys_to_virt function passed 64 bit
value to __pv_stub inline assembler where 'r' operand is
expected. Compiler behavior in such case is not well specified.
It worked in little endian case, but in big endian case
incorrect code was generated, where compiler confused which
part of 64 bit value it needed to modify. For example BE
snippet looked like this:

when LE similar code looked like this

Note 'r0' register is va that have to be translated into phys
To avoid this situation use explicit cast to 'unsigned long',
which explicitly discard upper part of phys address and convert
value to 32 bit. Also add comment so such cast will not be
removed in the future.

We've always been able to use either method on VLV, but it appears more

There is a rather horrid merge conflict in tools/perf - I was never
notified of the conflict because it originally occurred between Will's
tree and other stuff. Consequently I have a resolution which Will
forwarded me, which I'll forward on immediately after sending this
mail.
The other notable thing is I'm expecting some build breakage in the
crypto stuff on ARM only with Ard's AES patches. These were merged
into a stable git branch which others had already pulled, so there's
little I can do about this. The problem is caused because these
patches have a dependency on some code in the crypto git tree - I
tried requesting a branch I can pull to resolve these, and all I got
each time from the crypto people was "we'll revert our patches then"
which would only make things worse since I still don't have the
dependent patches. I've no idea what's going on there or how to
resolve that, and since I can't split these patches from the rest of
this pull request, I'm rather stuck with pushing this as-is or
reverting Ard's patches.
Since it should "come out in the wash" I've left them in - the only
build problems they seem to cause at the moment are with randconfigs,
and since it's a new feature anyway. However, if by -rc1 the
dependencies aren't in, I think it'd be best to revert Ard's patches"
I resolved the perf conflict roughly as per the patch sent by Russell,
but there may be some differences. Any errors are likely mine. Let's
see how the crypto issues work out..

"This series cleans up the handling of DMA masks in a lot of drivers,
fixing some bugs as we go.
Some of the more serious errors include:
- drivers which only set their coherent DMA mask if the attempt to
set the streaming mask fails.
- drivers which test for a NULL dma mask pointer, and then set the
dma mask pointer to a location in their module .data section -
which will cause problems if the module is reloaded.
To counter these, I have introduced two helper functions:
- dma_set_mask_and_coherent() takes care of setting both the
streaming and coherent masks at the same time, with the correct
error handling as specified by the API.
- dma_coerce_mask_and_coherent() which resolves the problem of
drivers forcefully setting DMA masks. This is more a marker for
future work to further clean these locations up - the code which
creates the devices really should be initialising these, but to fix
that in one go along with this change could potentially be very
disruptive.
The last thing this series does is prise away some of Linux's addition
to "DMA addresses are physical addresses and RAM always starts at
zero". We have ARM LPAE systems where all system memory is above 4GB
physical, hence having DMA masks interpreted by (eg) the block layers
as describing physical addresses in the range 0..DMAMASK fails on
these platforms. Santosh Shilimkar addresses this in this series; the
patches were copied to the appropriate people multiple times but were
ignored.
Fixing this also gets rid of some ARM weirdness in the setup of the
max*pfn variables, and brings ARM into line with every other Linux

Now that we have 64-bits for PMDs we can stop using special encodings
for the huge PMD values, and just put real PTEs in there.
We allocate a _PAGE_PMD_HUGE bit to distinguish between plain PMDs and
huge ones. It is the same for both 4U and 4V PTE layouts.
We also use _PAGE_SPECIAL to indicate the splitting state, since a
huge PMD cannot also be special.
All of the PMD --> PTE translation code disappears, and most of the
huge PMD bit modifications and tests just degenerate into the PTE
operations. In particular USER_PGTABLE_CHECK_PMD_HUGE becomes
trivial.
As a side effect, normal PMDs don't shift the physical address around.
This also speeds up the page table walks in the TLB miss paths since
they don't have to do the shifts any more.
Another non-trivial aspect is that pte_modify() has to be changed
to preserve the _PAGE_PMD_HUGE bits as well as the page size field
of the pte.

The low level preemption code fiddles with the PREEMPT_ACTIVE bit for
no reason and calls schedule() with interrupts disabled, which is
wrong to begin with. Remove the PREEMPT_ACTIVE fiddling and call the
proper schedule_preempt_irq() function.

I tried to find a proper explanation for this, but the changelog is
sparse and there are no mails explaining it further. But obviously
this relates to the interrupt priority levels of the m68k and tries to
be extra clever with nested interrupts. Though this cleverness just
adds code bloat to the interrupt hotpath.
For the common case of non nested interrupts the code runs through two
extra conditionals to the only important one, which checks whether the
return is to kernel or user space.
For the nested case the checks for in_hardirq() and the priority mask
value on stack catch only the case where the nested interrupt happens
inside the hard irq context of the first interrupt. If the nested
interrupt happens while the first interrupt handles soft interrupts,
then these extra checks buy nothing. The nested interrupt will fall
through to the final kernel/user space return check at
ret_from_exception.

the softirq handling is invoked with a minimal deeper stack. But
otherwise it's completely functional equivalent and saves 104 bytes of
text in arch/m68k/kernel/entry.o.
This modification allows us further to get rid of the limitations
which m68k puts on the preempt_count layout, so we can make the
preempt count bits completely generic.

If a nested guest does a NM fault but its CR0 doesn't contain the TS
flag (because it was already cleared by the guest with L1 aid) then we
have to activate FPU ourselves in L0 and then continue to L2. If TS flag
is set then we fallback on the previous behavior, forward the fault to
L1 if it asked for.

Pull networking updates from David Miller:
1) The addition of nftables. No longer will we need protocol aware
firewall filtering modules, it can all live in userspace.
At the core of nftables is a, for lack of a better term, virtual
machine that executes byte codes to inspect packet or metadata
(arriving interface index, etc.) and make verdict decisions.
Besides support for loading packet contents and comparing them, the
interpreter supports lookups in various datastructures as
fundamental operations. For example sets are supports, and
therefore one could create a set of whitelist IP address entries
which have ACCEPT verdicts attached to them, and use the appropriate
byte codes to do such lookups.
Since the interpreted code is composed in userspace, userspace can
do things like optimize things before giving it to the kernel.
Another major improvement is the capability of atomically updating
portions of the ruleset. In the existing netfilter implementation,
one has to update the entire rule set in order to make a change and
this is very expensive.
Userspace tools exist to create nftables rules using existing
netfilter rule sets, but both kernel implementations will need to
co-exist for quite some time as we transition from the old to the
new stuff.
Kudos to Patrick McHardy, Pablo Neira Ayuso, and others who have
worked so hard on this.
2) Daniel Borkmann and Hannes Frederic Sowa made several improvements
to our pseudo-random number generator, mostly used for things like
UDP port randomization and netfitler, amongst other things.
In particular the taus88 generater is updated to taus113, and test
cases are added.
3) Support 64-bit rates in HTB and TBF schedulers, from Eric Dumazet
and Yang Yingliang.
4) Add support for new 577xx tigon3 chips to tg3 driver, from Nithin
Sujir.
5) Fix two fatal flaws in TCP dynamic right sizing, from Eric Dumazet,
Neal Cardwell, and Yuchung Cheng.
6) Allow IP_TOS and IP_TTL to be specified in sendmsg() ancillary

13) Significantly improve the handling of secret keys we input into the
various hash functions in the inet hashtables, TCP fast open, as
well as syncookies. From Hannes Frederic Sowa. The key fundamental
operation is "net_get_random_once()" which uses static keys.
Hannes even extended this to ipv4/ipv6 fragmentation handling and
our generic flow dissector.
14) The generic driver layer takes care now to set the driver data to
NULL on device removal, so it's no longer necessary for drivers to
explicitly set it to NULL any more. Many drivers have been cleaned
up in this way, from Jingoo Han.
15) Add a BPF based packet scheduler classifier, from Daniel Borkmann.
16) Improve CRC32 interfaces and generic SKB checksum iterators so that

The get_dumpable() return value is not boolean. Most users of the
function actually want to be testing for non-SUID_DUMP_USER(1) rather than
SUID_DUMP_DISABLE(0). The SUID_DUMP_ROOT(2) is also considered a
protected state. Almost all places did this correctly, excepting the two
places fixed in this patch.
Wrong logic:

Without this patch, if the system had set the sysctl fs/suid_dumpable=2, a
user was able to ptrace attach to processes that had dropped privileges to
that user. (This may have been partially mitigated if Yama was enabled.)
The macros have been moved into the file that declares get/set_dumpable(),
which means things like the ia64 code can see them too.

The hot-Pluggable field in SRAT specifies which memory is hotpluggable.
As we mentioned before, if hotpluggable memory is used by the kernel, it
cannot be hot-removed. So memory hotplug users may want to set all
hotpluggable memory in ZONE_MOVABLE so that the kernel won't use it.
Memory hotplug users may also set a node as movable node, which has
ZONE_MOVABLE only, so that the whole node can be hot-removed.
But the kernel cannot use memory in ZONE_MOVABLE. By doing this, the
kernel cannot use memory in movable nodes. This will cause NUMA
performance down. And other users may be unhappy.
So we need a way to allow users to enable and disable this functionality.
In this patch, we introduce movable_node boot option to allow users to
choose to not to consume hotpluggable memory at early boot time and later
we can set it as ZONE_MOVABLE.
To achieve this, the movable_node boot option will control the memblock
allocation direction. That said, after memblock is ready, before SRAT is
parsed, we should allocate memory near the kernel image as we explained in
the previous patches. So if movable_node boot option is set, the kernel
does the following:
1. After memblock is ready, make memblock allocate memory bottom up.
2. After SRAT is parsed, make memblock behave as default, allocate memory
top down.
Users can specify "movable_node" in kernel commandline to enable this
functionality. For those who don't use memory hotplug or who don't want
to lose their NUMA performance, just don't specify anything. The kernel
will work as before.

Memory reserved for crashkernel could be large. So we should not allocate
this memory bottom up from the end of kernel image.
When SRAT is parsed, we will be able to know which memory is hotpluggable,
and we can avoid allocating this memory for the kernel. So reorder
reserve_crashkernel() after SRAT is parsed.

The Linux kernel cannot migrate pages used by the kernel. As a result,
kernel pages cannot be hot-removed. So we cannot allocate hotpluggable
memory for the kernel.
In a memory hotplug system, any numa node the kernel resides in should be
unhotpluggable. And for a modern server, each node could have at least
16GB memory. So memory around the kernel image is highly likely
unhotpluggable.
ACPI SRAT (System Resource Affinity Table) contains the memory hotplug
info. But before SRAT is parsed, memblock has already started to allocate
memory for the kernel. So we need to prevent memblock from doing this.
So direct memory mapping page tables setup is the case.
init_mem_mapping() is called before SRAT is parsed. To prevent page
tables being allocated within hotpluggable memory, we will use bottom-up
direction to allocate page tables from the end of kernel image to the
higher memory.
Note:
As for allocating page tables in lower memory, TJ said:
: This is an optional behavior which is triggered by a very specific kernel
: boot param, which I suspect is gonna need to stick around to support
: memory hotplug in the current setup unless we add another layer of address
: translation to support memory hotplug.
As for page tables may occupy too much lower memory if using 4K mapping
(CONFIG_DEBUG_PAGEALLOC and CONFIG_KMEMCHECK both disable using >4k

Create a new function memory_map_top_down to factor out of the top-down
direct memory mapping pagetable setup. This is also a preparation for the
following patch, which will introduce the bottom-up memory mapping. That
said, we will put the two ways of pagetable setup into separate functions,
and choose to use which way in init_mem_mapping, which makes the code more
clear.

To make the page tables compact, we were using 32-bit PGDs and PMDs.
We only had to support <= 43 bits of physical addresses so this was
quite feasible.
In order to support larger physical addresses we have to move to
64-bit PGDs and PMDs.
Most of the changes are straight-forward:
1) {pgd,pmd}_t --> unsigned long
2) Anything that tries to use plain "unsigned int" types with pgd/pmd
values needs to be adjusted. In particular things like "0U" become
"0UL".
3) {PGDIR,PMD}_BITS decrease by one.
4) In the assembler page table walkers, use "ldxa" instead of "lduwa"
and adjust the low bit masks to clear out the low 3 bits instead of
just the low 2 bits during pgd/pmd address formation.
Also, use PTRS_PER_PGD and PTRS_PER_PMD in the sizing of the
swapper_{pg_dir,low_pmd_dir} arrays.
This patch does not try to take advantage of having 64-bits in the
PMDs to simplify the hugepage code, that will come in a subsequent
change.

The impetus for this is that we would like to move to 64-bit PMDs and
PGDs, but that would result in only supporting a 42-bit address space
with the current page table layout. It'd be nice to support at least
43-bits.
The reason we'd end up with only 42-bits after making PMDs and PGDs
64-bit is that we only use half-page sized PTE tables in order to make
PMDs line up to 4MB, the hardware huge page size we use.
So what we do here is we make huge pages 8MB, and fabricate them using
4MB hw TLB entries.
Facilitate this by providing a "REAL_HPAGE_SHIFT" which is used in
places that really need to operate on hardware 4MB pages.
Use full pages (512 entries) for PTE tables, and adjust PMD_SHIFT,
PGD_SHIFT, and the build time CPP test as needed. Use a CPP test to
make sure REAL_HPAGE_SHIFT and the _PAGE_SZHUGE_* we use match up.
This makes the pgtable cache completely unused, so remove the code
managing it and the state used in mm_context_t. Now we have less
spinlocks taken in the page table allocation path.
The technique we use to fabricate the 8MB pages is to transfer bit 22
from the missing virtual address into the PTEs physical address field.
That takes care of the transparent huge pages case.
For hugetlb, we fill things in at the PTE level and that code already
puts the sub huge page physical bits into the PTEs, based upon the
offset, so there is nothing special we need to do. It all just works
out.
So, a small amount of complexity in the THP case, but this code is
about to get much simpler when we move the 64-bit PMDs as we can move
away from the fancy 32-bit huge PMD encoding and just put a real PTE
value in there.

Choose PAGE_OFFSET dynamically based upon cpu type.
Original UltraSPARC-I (spitfire) chips only supported a 44-bit
virtual address space.
Newer chips (T4 and later) support 52-bit virtual addresses
and up to 47-bits of physical memory space.
Therefore we have to adjust PAGE_SIZE dynamically based upon
the capabilities of the chip.
Note that this change alone does not allow us to support > 43-bit
physical memory, to do that we need to re-arrange our page table
support. The current encodings of the pmd_t and pgd_t pointers
restricts us to "32 + 11" == 43 bits.
This change can waste quite a bit of memory for the various tables.
In particular, a future change should work to size and allocate
kern_linear_bitmap[] and sparc64_valid_addr_bitmap[] dynamically.
This isn't easy as we really cannot take a TLB miss when accessing
kern_linear_bitmap[]. We'd have to lock it into the TLB or similar.

Older UltraSPARC chips had an address space hole due to the MMU only
supporting 44-bit virtual addresses.
The top end of this hole also has the same value as the current
definition of PAGE_OFFSET, so this can be confusing.
Consolidate the defines for the userspace mmap exclusion range into
page_64.h and use them in sys_sparc_64.c and hugetlbpage.c

The server version, formerly called "Avoton",
is named the "Intel(R) Atom(TM) Processor C2000 Product Family".
The client version, formerly called "Bay Trail",
is named the "Intel Atom Processor Z3000 Series",
as well as various "Intel Pentium Processor"
and "Intel Celeron Processor" brands, depending
on form-factor.
Silvermont has a set of MSRs not far off from NHM,
but the RAPL register set is a sub-set of those previously supported.

Consider a kernel crash in a module, simulated the following way:

When we turn off FRAME_POINTERs, the very first instruction in
that function causes a BUG. The problem is that we print IP in
the BUG report using %pB (from printk_address). And %pB
decrements the pointer by one to fix printing addresses of
functions with tail calls.
This was added in commit 71f9e59800 ("x86, dumpstack: Use
%pB format specifier for stack trace") to fix the call stack
printouts.
So instead of correct output:

remove that parameter from printk_address.
