 There are a number of ACPI patches in here as well, as Rafael said they
 should go through this tree due to the driver core changes they
 required.  They have all been acked by the ACPI developers.
 
 There are also a number of small subsystem-specific changes in here, due
 to some changes to the kobject core code.  Those too have all been acked
 by the various subsystem maintainers.
 
 As for content, it's pretty boring outside of the ACPI changes:
   - spdx cleanups
   - kobject documentation updates
   - default attribute groups for kobjects
   - other minor kobject/driver core fixes
 
 All have been in linux-next for a while with no reported issues.

Ulf Hansson f9ccd7c3a1 PM / Domains: Allow to attach a CPU via genpd_dev_pm_attach_by_id|name()
Attaching a device via genpd_dev_pm_attach_by_id|name() makes
genpd allocate a virtual device that it attaches instead. This
leads to a problem in case when the base device belongs to a CPU.
More precisely, it means genpd_get_cpu() compares against the
virtual device, thus it fails to find a matching CPU device.

Address this limitation by passing the base device to genpd_get_cpu()
rather than the virtual device.

Moreover, to deal with detach correctly from genpd_remove_device(),
store the CPU number in struct generic_pm_domain_data, so as to be
able to clear the corresponding bit in the cpumask for the genpd.

Ulf Hansson b24e196586 PM / Domains: Search for the CPU device outside the genpd lock
While attaching/detaching a device to a PM domain (genpd) with
GENPD_FLAG_CPU_DOMAIN set, genpd iterates the cpu_possible_mask to
check whether or not the device corresponds to a CPU. This iteration
is done while holding the genpd's lock, which is unnecessary.

Avoid the locking by restructuring the corresponding code a bit.

Ulf Hansson 51dcf7482f PM / Domains: Use the base device for driver_deferred_probe_check_state()
When genpd fails to attach a device to one of its multiple PM domains,
we end up calling driver_deferred_probe_check_state() for the recently
allocated virtual device. This is incorrect, as it's the base device
that is being probed.

Fix this by passing along the base device to __genpd_dev_pm_attach()
and use that instead.

Ulf Hansson 3ccf3f0cd1 PM / Domains: Enable genpd_dev_pm_attach_by_id|name() for single PM domain
If a call to dev_pm_domain_attach() succeeds to attach a device to its
single PM domain, the important point is to prevent subsequent
dev_pm_domain_attach_by_name|id() calls from failing. That is done by
checking the dev->pm_domain pointer and then returning -EEXIST, rather
than continuing to call genpd_dev_pm_attach_by_id|name().

For this reason, enable genpd_dev_pm_attach_by_id|name() to be used for
single PM domains too. This simplifies future users, so they only need
to use dev_pm_domain_attach_by_id|name() instead of having to combine
it with dev_pm_domain_attach().

Ulf Hansson e8b04de9da PM / Domains: Allow OF lookup for multi PM domain case from ->attach_dev()
A genpd provider that uses the ->attach_dev() callback to look up
resources for a device fails to do so when the device has multiple
PM domains attached.  That is because when genpd invokes the
->attach_dev() callback, it passes the allocated virtual device as
the in-parameter.

To address this problem, simply assign the dev->of_node for the
virtual device, based upon the original device's OF node.

Ulf Hansson dc351d4c5f PM / core: Propagate dev->power.wakeup_path when no callbacks
The dev->power.direct_complete flag may become set in device_prepare() in
case the device don't have any PM callbacks (dev->power.no_pm_callbacks is
set). This leads to a broken behaviour, when there is child having wakeup
enabled and relies on its parent to be used in the wakeup path.

More precisely, when the direct complete path becomes selected for the
child in __device_suspend(), the propagation of the dev->power.wakeup_path
becomes skipped as well.

Let's address this problem, by checking if the device is a part the wakeup
path or has wakeup enabled, then prevent the direct complete path from
being used.

Ulf Hansson e94999688e PM / Domains: Add genpd governor for CPUs
After some preceding changes, PM domains managed by genpd may contain
CPU devices, so idle state residency values should be taken into
account during the state selection process. [The residency value is
the minimum amount of time to be spent by a CPU (or a group of CPUs)
in an idle state in order to save more energy than could be saved
by picking up a shallower idle state.]

For this purpose, add a new genpd governor, pm_domain_cpu_gov, to be
used for selecting idle states of PM domains with CPU devices attached
either directly or through subdomains.

The new governor computes the minimum expected idle duration for all
online CPUs attached to a PM domain and its subdomains.  Next, it
finds the deepest idle state whose target residency is within the
expected idle duration and selects it as the target idle state of
the domain.

It should be noted that the minimum expected idle duration computation
is based on the closest timer event information stored in the per-CPU
variables cpuidle_devices for all of the CPUs in the domain.  That
needs to be revisited in future, as obviously there are other reasons
why a CPU may be woken up from idle.

Yangtao Li f2a424f6c6 PM / core: Introduce dpm_async_fn() helper
When we want to execute device pm functions asynchronously, we'll
do the following for the device:

  1) reinit_completion(&dev->power.completion);
  2) Check if the device enables asynchronous suspend.
  3) If necessary, execute the corresponding function asynchronously.

There are a lot of such repeated operations here, in fact we can avoid
this. So introduce dpm_async_fn() to have better code readability and
reuse.

And use this function to do some cleanup.

Ulf Hansson eb594b7325 PM / Domains: Add support for CPU devices to genpd
To enable a CPU device to be attached to a PM domain managed by genpd,
make a few changes to it for convenience.

To be able to quickly find out what CPUs are attached to a genpd,
which typically becomes useful from a genpd governor as subsequent
changes are about to show, add a cpumask to struct generic_pm_domain
to be updated when a CPU device gets attached to the genpd containing
that cpumask. Also, propagate the cpumask changes upwards in the
domain hierarchy to the master PM domains. This way, the cpumask for
a genpd hierarchically reflects all CPUs attached to the topology
below it.

Finally, make this an opt-in feature, to avoid having to manage CPUs
and the cpumask for a genpd that don't need it. To that end, add
a new genpd configuration bit, GENPD_FLAG_CPU_DOMAIN.

Ulf Hansson 49a27e2790 PM / Domains: Add generic data pointer to struct genpd_power_state
Add a data pointer to the genpd_power_state struct, to allow a genpd
backend driver to store per-state specific data. To introduce the
pointer, change the way genpd deals with freeing of the corresponding
allocated data.

More precisely, clarify the responsibility of whom that shall free the
data, by adding a ->free_states() callback to the generic_pm_domain
structure. The one allocating the data will be expected to set the
callback, to allow genpd to invoke it from genpd_remove().

There were a few files in the driver core power code that did not have
SPDX identifiers on them, so fix that up.  At the same time, remove the

These prints are useful if we're doing PM suspend debugging. Having them
at pr_debug() level means that we need to either enable DEBUG in this
file, or compile the kernel with dynamic debug capabilities. Both of
these options have drawbacks like custom compilation or opting into all
debug statements being included into the kernel image. Given that we
already have infrastructure to collect PM debugging information with
CONFIG_PM_DEBUG and friends, let's change the pr_debug usage here to be
pm_pr_dbg() instead so we can collect the wakeup information in the
kernel logs.

from genpd->mlock, so that genpd->mlock won't be held when prepare_lock is acquired
in .attach_dev and .detach_dev

Viresh Kumar 1fad17fb1b PM / wakeup: Rework wakeup source timer cancellation
If wakeup_source_add() is called right after wakeup_source_remove()
for the same wakeup source, timer_setup() may be called for a
potentially scheduled timer which is incorrect.

To avoid that, move the wakeup source timer cancellation from
wakeup_source_drop() to wakeup_source_remove().

Moreover, make wakeup_source_remove() clear the timer function after
canceling the timer to let wakeup_source_not_registered() treat
unregistered wakeup sources in the same way as the ones that have
never been registered.

When rpm_resume() desactivates the autosuspend timer, it should only
try to cancel hrtimer but not wait for the handler to finish, because
both rpm_resume() and pm_suspend_timer_fn() take the power.lock.

A deadlock is possible as follows:

Rafael J. Wysocki 36003d4cf5 driver core: Fix PM-runtime for links added during consumer probe
Commit 4c06c4e6cf ("driver core: Fix possible supplier PM-usage
counter imbalance") introduced a regression that causes suppliers
to be suspended prematurely for device links added during consumer
driver probe if the initial PM-runtime status of the consumer is
"suspended" and the consumer is resumed after adding the link and
before pm_runtime_put_suppliers() is called.  In that case,
pm_runtime_put_suppliers() will drop the rpm_active refcount for
the link by one and (since rpm_active is equal to two after the
preceding consumer resume) the supplier's PM-runtime usage counter
will be decremented, which may cause the supplier to suspend even
though the consumer's PM-runtime status is "active".

For this reason, partially revert commit 4c06c4e6cf as the problem
it tried to fix needs to be addressed somewhat differently, and
change pm_runtime_get_suppliers() and pm_runtime_put_suppliers() so
that the latter only drops rpm_active references acquired by the
former.  [This requires adding a new field to struct device_link,
but I coulnd't find a cleaner way to address the issue that would
work in all cases.]

This causes pm_runtime_put_suppliers() to effectively ignore device
links added during consumer probe, so device_link_add() doesn't need
to worry about ensuring that suppliers will remain active after
pm_runtime_put_suppliers() for links created with DL_FLAG_RPM_ACTIVE
set and it only needs to bump up rpm_active by one for those links,
so pm_runtime_active_link() is not necessary any more.

Sudeep Holla 85945c28b5 PM / core: Add support to skip power management in device/driver model
All device objects in the driver model contain fields that control the
handling of various power management activities. However, it's not
always useful. There are few instances where pseudo devices are added
to the model just to take advantage of many other features like
kobjects, udev events, and so on. One such example is cpu devices and
their caches.

The sysfs for the cpu caches are managed by adding devices with cpu
as the parent in cpu_device_create() when secondary cpu is brought
online. Generally when the secondary CPUs are hotplugged back in as part
of resume from suspend-to-ram, we call cpu_device_create() from the cpu
hotplug state machine while the cpu device associated with that CPU is
not yet ready to be resumed as the device_resume() call happens bit
later. It's not really needed to set the flag is_prepared for cpu
devices as they are mostly pseudo device and hotplug framework deals
with state machine and not managed through the cpu device.

This often results in annoying warning when resuming:
Enabling non-boot CPUs ...
CPU1: Booted secondary processor
 cache: parent cpu1 should not be sleeping
CPU1 is up
CPU2: Booted secondary processor
 cache: parent cpu2 should not be sleeping
CPU2 is up
.... and so on.

So in order to fix these kind of errors, we could just completely avoid
doing any power management related initialisations and operations if
they are not used by these devices.

Add no_pm flags to indicate that the device doesn't require any sort of
PM activities and all of them can be completely skipped. We can use the
same flag to also avoid adding not used *power* sysfs entries for these
devices. For now, lets use this for cpu cache devices.

As of the patch ("PM / Domains: Mark "name" const in
genpd_dev_pm_attach_by_name()") it's clear that the name in
dev_pm_domain_attach_by_name() can be const.  Mark it as so.  This
allows drivers to pass in a name that was declared "const" in a
driver.

The genpd_dev_pm_attach_by_name() simply takes the name and passes it
to of_property_match_string() where the argument is "const char *".
Adding a const here allows a later patch to add a const to
dev_pm_domain_attach_by_name() which allows drivers to pass in a name
that was declared "const" in a driver.

Rafael J. Wysocki 4c06c4e6cf driver core: Fix possible supplier PM-usage counter imbalance
If a stateless device link to a certain supplier with
DL_FLAG_PM_RUNTIME set in the flags is added and then removed by the
consumer driver's probe callback, the supplier's PM-runtime usage
counter will be nonzero after that which effectively causes the
supplier to remain "always on" going forward.

Namely, device_link_add() called to add the link invokes
device_link_rpm_prepare() which notices that the consumer driver is
probing, so it increments the supplier's PM-runtime usage counter
with the assumption that the link will stay around until
pm_runtime_put_suppliers() is called by driver_probe_device(),
but if the link goes away before that point, the supplier's
PM-runtime usage counter will remain nonzero.

To prevent that from happening, first rework pm_runtime_get_suppliers()
and pm_runtime_put_suppliers() to use the rpm_active refounts of device
links and make the latter only drop rpm_active and the supplier's
PM-runtime usage counter for each link by one, unless rpm_active is
one already for it.  Next, modify device_link_add() to bump up the
new link's rpm_active refcount and the suppliers PM-runtime usage
counter by two, to prevent pm_runtime_put_suppliers(), if it is
called subsequently, from suspending the supplier prematurely (in
case its PM-runtime usage counter goes down to 0 in there).

Due to the way rpm_put_suppliers() works, this change does not
affect runtime suspend of the consumer ends of new device links (or,
generally, device links for which DL_FLAG_PM_RUNTIME has just been
set).

Rafael J. Wysocki c1567f813a PM-runtime: Fix __pm_runtime_set_status() race with runtime resume
Commit 4080ab0830 ("PM-runtime: Take suppliers into account in
__pm_runtime_set_status()") introduced a race condition that may
trigger if __pm_runtime_set_status() is used incorrectly (that is,
if it is called when PM-runtime is enabled for the target device
and working).

In that case, if the original PM-runtime status of the device is
RPM_SUSPENDED, a runtime resume of the device may occur after
__pm_runtime_set_status() has dropped its power.lock spinlock
and before deactivating its suppliers, so the suppliers may be
deactivated while the device is PM-runtime-active which may lead
to functional issues.

To avoid that, modify __pm_runtime_set_status() to check whether
or not PM-runtime is enabled for the device before activating its
suppliers (if the new status is RPM_ACTIVE) and either return an
error if that's the case or increment the device's disable_depth
counter to prevent PM-runtime from being enabled for it while
the remaining part of the function is running (disable_depth is
then decremented on the way out).

Rafael J. Wysocki 4080ab0830 PM-runtime: Take suppliers into account in __pm_runtime_set_status()
If the target device has any suppliers, as reflected by device links
to them, __pm_runtime_set_status() does not take them into account,
which is not consistent with the other parts of the PM-runtime
framework and may lead to programming mistakes.

Modify __pm_runtime_set_status() to take suppliers into account by
activating them upfront if the new status is RPM_ACTIVE and
deactivating them on exit if the new status is RPM_SUSPENDED.

If the activation of one of the suppliers fails, the new status
will be RPM_SUSPENDED and the (remaining) suppliers will be
deactivated on exit (the child count of the device's parent
will be dropped too then).

Of course, adding device links locking to __pm_runtime_set_status()
means that it cannot be run fron interrupt context, so make it use
spin_lock_irq() and spin_unlock_irq() instead of spin_lock_irqsave()
and spin_unlock_irqrestore(), respectively.

Make PM-runtime accounting use ktime_get_mono_fast_ns() to avoid this
problem.

With ktime_get_mono_fast_ns(), the timestamp is not guaranteed to be
monotonic across an update of timekeeping and as a result time can go
backward. Add a test to skip accounting for such situation which should
stay exceptional.

Calling rpm_put_suppliers() from pm_runtime_drop_link() is excessive
as it affects all suppliers of the consumer device and not just the
one pointed to by the device link being dropped.  Worst case it may
cause the consumer device to stop working unexpectedly.  Moreover, in
principle it is racy with respect to runtime PM of the consumer
device.

To avoid these problems drop runtime PM references on the particular
supplier pointed to by the link in question only and do that after
the link has been dropped from the consumer device's list of links to
suppliers, which is in device_link_free().

After commit ead18c23c2 ("driver core: Introduce device links
reference counting"), if there is a link between the given supplier
and the given consumer already, device_link_add() will refcount it
and return it unconditionally without updating its flags.  It is
possible, however, that the second (or any subsequent) caller of
device_link_add() for the same consumer-supplier pair will pass
DL_FLAG_PM_RUNTIME, possibly along with DL_FLAG_RPM_ACTIVE, in flags
to it and the existing link may not behave as expected then.

First, if DL_FLAG_PM_RUNTIME is not set in the existing link's flags
at all, it needs to be set like during the original initialization of
the link.

Second, if DL_FLAG_RPM_ACTIVE is passed to device_link_add() in flags
(in addition to DL_FLAG_PM_RUNTIME), the existing link should to be
updated to reflect the "active" runtime PM configuration of the
consumer-supplier pair and extra care must be taken here to avoid
possible destructive races with runtime PM of the consumer.

To that end, redefine the rpm_active field in struct device_link
as a refcount, initialize it to 1 and make rpm_resume() (for the
consumer) and device_link_add() increment it whenever they acquire
a runtime PM reference on the supplier device.  Accordingly, make
rpm_suspend() (for the consumer) and pm_runtime_clean_up_links()
decrement it and drop runtime PM references to the supplier
device in a loop until rpm_active becones 1 again.

Thara Gopinath a08c2a5a31 PM-runtime: Replace jiffies-based accounting with ktime-based accounting
Replace jiffies-based accounting for runtime_active_time and
runtime_suspended_time with ktime-based accounting. This makes the
runtime debug counters inline with genpd and other PM subsytems which
use ktime-based accounting.

Timekeeping is initialized before driver_init(). It's only at that time
that PM-runtime can be enabled.

Although we should be safe because we haven't yet changed the
clocksource at that time, we can't do that because of seqcount
protection.

Use ktime_get_mono_fast_ns() instead which is lock safe for such
cases.

With ktime_get_mono_fast_ns, the timestamp is not guaranteed to be
monotonic across an update and as a result can goes backward.
According to update_fast_timekeeper() description: "In the worst
case, this can result is a slightly wrong timestamp (a few
nanoseconds)". For PM-runtime autosuspend, this means only that
the suspend decision may be slightly suboptimal.

Vincent Guittot 8234f6734c PM-runtime: Switch autosuspend over to using hrtimers
PM-runtime uses the timer infrastructure for autosuspend. This implies
that the minimum time before autosuspending a device is in the range
of 1 tick included to 2 ticks excluded
 -On arm64 this means between 4ms and 8ms with default jiffies
  configuration
 -And on arm, it is between 10ms and 20ms

These values are quite high for embedded systems which sometimes want
the duration to be in the range of 1 ms.

It is possible to switch autosuspend over to using hrtimers to get
finer granularity for short durations and take advantage of slack to
retain some margins and get long timeouts with minimum wakeups.

On an arm64 platform that uses 1ms for autosuspending timeout of its
GPU, idle power is reduced by 10% with hrtimer.

The latency impact on arm64 hikey octo cores is:
 - mark_last_busy: from 1.11 us to 1.25 us
 - rpm_suspend: from 15.54 us to 15.38 us
[Only the code path of rpm_suspend() that starts hrtimer has been
measured.]

arm64 image (arm64 default defconfig) decreases by around 3KB
with following details:

testing performance impact, is neglictable (244B).

Viresh Kumar 18edf49c45 PM / Domains: Propagate performance state updates
Currently a genpd only handles the performance state requirements from
the devices under its control. This commit extends that to also handle
the performance state requirement(s) put on the master genpd by its
sub-domains. There is a separate value required for each master that
the genpd has and so a new field is added to the struct gpd_link
(link->performance_state), which represents the link between a genpd and
its master. The struct gpd_link also got another field
prev_performance_state, which is used by genpd core as a temporary
variable during transitions.

On a call to dev_pm_genpd_set_performance_state(), the genpd core first
updates the performance state of the masters of the device's genpd and
then updates the performance state of the genpd. The masters do the same
and propagate performance state updates to their masters before updating
their own. The performance state transition from genpd to its master is
done with the help of dev_pm_opp_xlate_performance_state(), which looks
at the OPP tables of both the domains to translate the state.

dev_pm_genpd_set_performance_state() will be required to call
dev_pm_opp_xlate_performance_state() going forward to translate from
performance state of a sub-domain to performance state of its master.
And dev_pm_opp_xlate_performance_state() needs pointers to the OPP
tables of both genpd and its master.

Lets fetch and save them while the OPP tables are added. Fetching the
OPP tables should never fail as we just added the OPP tables and so add
a WARN_ON() for such a bug instead of full error paths.

Ulf Hansson 68de2fe57a PM / Domains: Make genpd performance states orthogonal to the idlestates
It's quite questionable whether genpd internally should care about if the
corresponding PM domain for a device is powered on, as to allow setting a
new performance state for it. The assumptions creates an unnecessary
limitation at this point, for both consumers and providers, but more
importantly it also makes the code more complicated.

Therefore, let's simplify the code to allow setting a performance state, by
invoking the ->set_performance_state() callback, no matter whether the PM
domain is powered on or off.

Do note, this change means genpd providers needs to restore the performance
state themselves during power on, via the ->power_on() callback. Moreover,
they may also need to check that the PM domain is powered on, from their
->set_performance_state() callback, before deciding to update the state.

Viresh Kumar 4c6a343e57 OPP: Rename and relocate of_genpd_opp_to_performance_state()
The OPP core already has the performance state values for each of the
genpd's OPPs and there is no need to call the genpd callback again to
get the performance state for the case where the end device doesn't have
an OPP table and has the "required-opps" property directly in its node.

This commit renames of_genpd_opp_to_performance_state() as
of_get_required_opp_performance_state() and moves it to the OPP core, as
it is all about OPP stuff now.

most common one is the consumer device structure, which is named
(correctly) as "dev" within genpd core. The second one is the genpd's
device structure, referenced as genpd->dev. The third one is the virtual
device structures created by the genpd core to represent the consumer
device for multiple power domain case, currently named as genpd_dev. The
naming of these virtual devices isn't very clear or readable and it
looks more like the genpd->dev.

Rename the virtual device instances within the genpd core as "virt_dev".

A caller of pm_genpd_init() that provides some states for the genpd via the
->states pointer in the struct generic_pm_domain, should also provide a
governor. This because it's the job of the governor to pick a state that
satisfies the constraints.

Therefore, let's print a warning to inform the user about such bogus
configuration and avoid to bail out, by instead picking the shallowest
state before genpd invokes the ->power_off() callback.

Instead of returning -EINVAL from of_genpd_parse_idle_states() in case none
compatible states was found, let's return 0 to indicate success. Assign
also the out-parameter *states to NULL and *n to 0, to indicate to the

This enables the caller of of_genpd_parse_idle_states() to easier act on
the returned error code.

If __device_suspend() runs asynchronously (in which case the device
passed to it is in dpm_suspended_list at that point) and it returns
early on an error or pending wakeup, and the power.direct_complete
flag has been set for the device already, the subsequent
device_resume() will be confused by that and it will call
pm_runtime_enable() incorrectly, as runtime PM has not been
disabled for the device by __device_suspend().

To avoid that, clear power.direct_complete if __device_suspend()
is not going to disable runtime PM for the device before returning.

Rob Herring e01afc3250 PM / Domains: Stop deferring probe at the end of initcall
All PM domain drivers must be built-in (at least those using DT), so
there is no point deferring probe after initcalls are done. Continuing
to defer probe may prevent booting successfully even if managing PM
domains is not required. This can happen if the user failed to enable
the driver or if power-domains are added to a platform's DT, but there
is not yet a driver (e.g. a new DTB with an old kernel).

Call the driver core function driver_deferred_probe_check_init_done()
instead of just returning -EPROBE_DEFER to stop deferring probe when
initcalls are done.

Ulf Hansson 895b66129a PM / Domains: Don't power on at attach for the multi PM domain case
There are no legacy behavior in drivers to consider while attaching a
device to genpd - for the multiple PM domain case.

For that reason, let's instead require the driver to runtime resume the
device, via calling pm_runtime_get_sync() for example, when it needs to
power on the corresponding PM domain.

This allows us to improve the situation during attach. Instead of always
power on the PM domain, which may be unnecessary, let's leave it in its
current state. Additionally, to avoid the PM domain to stay powered on,
let's schedule a power off work.

Ravi Chandra Sadineni 2d5ed61ce9 PM / wakeup: Export wakeup_count instead of event_count via sysfs
Currently we export event_count instead of wakeup_count via the
per-device wakeup_count sysfs attribute. Change it to wakeup_count
to make it more meaningful.

wakeup_count increments only when events_check_enabled is set,
that is whenever writes the current wakeup count to
/sys/power/wakeup_count.  Also events_check_enabled is cleared on
every resume. User space is expected to write to this just before
suspend.  This way pm_wakeup_event(), when called from IRQs handles,
will increment wakeup_count only if we are in system-wide
suspend-resume cycle and should give a fair approximation of how many
times a device may have triggered a wakeup from system suspend.

event_count on the other hand will increment every time
pm_wakeup_event() is called irrespective of whether we are in a
suspend-resume cycle and some drivers call it on every interrupt
which makes it less useful for system wakeup tracking.

Ulf Hansson 82e12d9e0b PM / Domains: Add dev_pm_domain_attach_by_id() to manage multi PM domains
The existing dev_pm_domain_attach() function, allows a single PM domain to
be attached per device. To be able to support devices that are partitioned
across multiple PM domains, let's introduce a new interface,
dev_pm_domain_attach_by_id().

The dev_pm_domain_attach_by_id() returns a new allocated struct device with
the corresponding attached PM domain. This enables for example a driver to
operate on the new device from a power management point of view. The driver
may then also benefit from using the received device, to set up so called
device-links towards its original device. Depending on the situation, these
links may then be dynamically changed.

The new interface is typically called by drivers during their probe phase,
in case they manages devices which uses multiple PM domains. If that is the
case, the driver also becomes responsible of managing the detaching of the
PM domains, which typically should be done at the remove phase. Detaching
is done by calling the existing dev_pm_domain_detach() function and for
each of the received devices from dev_pm_domain_attach_by_id().

Note, currently its only genpd that supports multiple PM domains per
device, but dev_pm_domain_attach_by_id() can easily by extended to cover
other PM domain types, if/when needed.

Because, only one PM domain can be attached per device, genpd needs to
create a virtual device that it can attach/detach instead. More precisely,
let the new function genpd_dev_pm_attach_by_id() register a virtual struct
device via calling device_register(). Then let it attach this device to the
corresponding PM domain, rather than the one that is provided by the
caller. The actual attaching is done via re-using the existing genpd OF
functions.

At successful attachment, genpd_dev_pm_attach_by_id() returns the created
virtual device, which allows the caller to operate on it to deal with power
management. Following changes on top, provides more details in this
regards.

To deal with detaching of a PM domain for the multiple PM domains case,
let's also extend the existing genpd_dev_pm_detach() function, to cover the
cleanup of the created virtual device, via make it call device_unregister()
on it. In this way, there is no need to introduce a new function to deal
with detach for the multiple PM domain case, but instead the existing one
is re-used.

Ulf Hansson bcd931f298 PM / Domains: Don't attach devices in genpd with multi PM domains
The power-domain DT property may now contain a list of PM domain
specifiers, which represents that a device are partitioned across multiple
PM domains. This leads to a new situation in genpd_dev_pm_attach(), as only
one PM domain can be attached per device.

To remain things simple for the most common configuration, when a single PM
domain is used, let's treat the multiple PM domain case as being specific.

In other words, let's change genpd_dev_pm_attach() to check for multiple PM
domains and prevent it from attach any PM domain for this case. Instead,
leave this to be managed separately, from following changes to genpd.

There is no need to pass a genpd struct to pm_genpd_remove_device(), as we
already have the information about the PM domain (genpd) through the device
structure.

Additionally, we don't allow to remove a PM domain from a device, other
than the one it may have assigned to it, so really it does not make sense
to have a separate in-param for it.

For these reason, drop it and update the current only call to
pm_genpd_remove_device() from amdgpu_acp.

Ulf Hansson a0504aecba PM / runtime: Drop usage count for suppliers at device link removal
In the case consumer device is runtime resumed, while the link to the
supplier is removed, the earlier call to pm_runtime_get_sync() made from
rpm_get_suppliers() does not get properly balanced with a corresponding
call to pm_runtime_put(). This leads to that suppliers remains to be
runtime resumed forever, while they don't need to.

Let's fix the behaviour by calling rpm_put_suppliers() when dropping a
device link. Not that, since rpm_put_suppliers() checks the
link->rpm_active flag, we can correctly avoid to call pm_runtime_put() in
cases when we shouldn't.

Ulf Hansson 1e83786198 PM / runtime: Fixup reference counting of device link suppliers at probe
In the driver core, before it invokes really_probe() it runtime resumes the
suppliers for the device via calling pm_runtime_get_suppliers(), which also
increases the runtime PM usage count for each of the available supplier.

This makes sense, as to be able to allow the consumer device to be probed
by its driver. However, if the driver decides to add a new supplier link
during ->probe(), hence updating the list of suppliers, the following call
to pm_runtime_put_suppliers(), invoked after really_probe() in the driver
core, we get into trouble.

More precisely, pm_runtime_put() gets called also for the new supplier(s),
which is wrong as the driver core, didn't trigger pm_runtime_get_sync() to
be called for it in the first place. In other words, the new supplier may
be runtime suspended even in cases when it shouldn't.

Fix this behaviour, by runtime resume suppliers according to the same
conditions as managed by the runtime PM core, when runtime resume callbacks
are being invoked.

Additionally, don't try to runtime suspend any of the suppliers after
really_probe(), but instead rely on that to happen via the consumer device,
when it becomes runtime suspended.

Commit 08810a4119 (PM / core: Add NEVER_SKIP and SMART_PREPARE
driver flags) inadvertently prevented the power.direct_complete flag
from being set for devices without PM callbacks and with disabled
runtime PM which also prevents power.direct_complete from being set
for their parents.  That led to problems including a resume crash on
HP ZBook 14u.

Restore the previous behavior by causing power.direct_complete to be
set for those devices again, but do that in a more direct way to
avoid overlooking that case in the future.

Ulf Hansson 919b7308fc PM / Domains: Allow a better error handling of dev_pm_domain_attach()
The callers of dev_pm_domain_attach() currently checks the returned error
code for -EPROBE_DEFER and needs to ignore other error codes. This is an
unnecessary limitation, which also leads to a rather strange behaviour in
the error path.

Address this limitation, by changing the return codes from
acpi_dev_pm_attach() and genpd_dev_pm_attach(). More precisely, let them
return 0, when no PM domain is needed for the device and then return 1, in
case the device was successfully attached to its PM domain. In this way,
dev_pm_domain_attach(), gets a better understanding of what happens in the
attach attempts and also allowing its caller to better act on real errors
codes.

Ulf Hansson 72038df3c5 PM / Domains: Fix error path during attach in genpd
In case the PM domain fails to be powered on in genpd_dev_pm_attach(), it
returns -EPROBE_DEFER, but keeping the device attached to its PM domain.
This leads to problems when the next attempt to attach is re-tried. More
precisely, in that situation an -EEXIST error code is returned, because the
device already has its PM domain pointer assigned, from the first attempt.

Now, because of the sloppy error handling by the existing callers of
dev_pm_domain_attach(), probing is allowed to continue when -EEXIST is
returned. However, in such case there are no guarantees that the PM domain
is powered on by genpd, which may lead to hangs when buses/drivers tried to
access their devices.

Let's fix this behaviour, simply by detaching the device when powering on
fails in genpd_dev_pm_attach().

Doug Berger 2ef7c01c0c PM / wakeup: Only update last time for active wakeup sources
When wakelock support was added, the wakeup_source_add() function
was updated to set the last_time value of the wakeup source. This
has the unintended side effect of producing confusing output from
pm_print_active_wakeup_sources() when a wakeup source is added
prior to a sleep that is blocked by a different wakeup source.

The function pm_print_active_wakeup_sources() will search for the
most recently active wakeup source when no active source is found.
If a wakeup source is added after a different wakeup source blocks
the system from going to sleep it may have a later last_time value
than the blocking source and be output as the last active wakeup
source even if it has never actually been active.

It looks to me like the change to wakeup_source_add() was made to
prevent the wakelock garbage collection from accidentally dropping
a wakelock during the narrow window between adding the wakelock to
the wakelock list in wakelock_lookup_add() and the activation of
the wakeup source in pm_wake_lock().

This commit changes the behavior so that only the last_time of the
wakeup source used by a wakelock is initialized prior to adding it
to the wakeup source list. This preserves the meaning of the
last_time value as the last time the wakeup source was active and
allows a wakeup source that has never been active to have a
last_time value of 0.

pointer, so use dev_printk() to match other device-related things.  Add the
function name, similar to initcall_debug output.  E.g.,

I wondered if this would break scripts/bootgraph.pl, but I don't think it
will because bootgraph.pl doesn't add any timing information to $start{}
after it sees "Write protecting the" or "Freeing unused kernel memory".

Viresh Kumar 6e41766a6a PM / Domain: Implement of_genpd_opp_to_performance_state()
This implements of_genpd_opp_to_performance_state() which can be used
from the device drivers or the OPP core to find the performance state
encoded in the "required-opps" property of a node. Normally this would
be called only once for each OPP of the device for which the OPP table
of the device is getting generated.

Different platforms may encode the performance state differently using
the OPP table (they may simply return value of opp-hz or opp-microvolt,
or apply some algorithm on top of those values) and so a new callback
->opp_to_performance_state() is implemented to allow platform specific
drivers to convert the power domain OPP to a performance state value.

The generic power domains can have an OPP table for themselves now, and
phandle of their OPP nodes can be used by the devices powered by the
domain. In order for the OPP core to translate requirements between the
devices and their power domains, both need to have an OPP table in
kernel.

Parse the OPP table for power domains
if they have their
set_performance_state() callback set.

With this patch, an OPP table would be created for the genpd in kernel
based on the OPP table present in DT, if the genpd have its
set_performance_state() callback set.

This is because the dedicated wake IRQ for the device may have been
already enabled earlier by dev_pm_enable_wake_irq_check().  Fix the
issue by checking for runtime PM suspended status.

This issue can be easily reproduced by setting serial console log level
to zero, letting the serial console idle, and suspend the system from
an ssh terminal.  On resume, dmesg will have the warning above.

The reason why I have not run into this issue earlier has been that I
typically run my PM test cases from on a serial console instead over ssh.

Ulf Hansson a3381e3a65 PM / domains: Fix up domain-idle-states OF parsing
Commit b539cc82d4 (PM / Domains: Ignore domain-idle-states that are
not compatible), made it possible to ignore non-compatible
domain-idle-states OF nodes. However, in case that happens while doing
the OF parsing, the number of elements in the allocated array would
exceed the numbers actually needed, thus wasting memory.

Fix this by pre-iterating the genpd OF node and counting the number of
compatible domain-idle-states nodes, before doing the allocation. While
doing this, it makes sense to rework the code a bit to avoid open coding,
of parts responsible for the OF node iteration.

Let's also take the opportunity to clarify the function header for
of_genpd_parse_idle_states(), about what is being returned in case of
errors.

The pm_runtime_force_suspend|resume() helpers currently requires the device
to at some level (PM domain, bus, etc), have the ->runtime_suspend|resume()
callbacks assigned for it, else -ENOSYS is returned as an error.

However, there are no reason for this requirement, so let's simply remove
it by allowing these callbacks to be NULL.

Rafael J. Wysocki 4918e1f87c PM / runtime: Rework pm_runtime_force_suspend/resume()
One of the limitations of pm_runtime_force_suspend/resume() is that
if a parent driver wants to use these functions, all of its child
drivers generally have to do that too because of the parent usage
counter manipulations necessary to get the correct state of the parent
during system-wide transitions to the working state (system resume).
However, that limitation turns out to be artificial, so remove it.

Namely, pm_runtime_force_suspend() only needs to update the children
counter of its parent (if there's is a parent) when the device can
stay in suspend after the subsequent system resume transition, as
that counter is correct already otherwise.  Now, if the parent's
children counter is not updated, it is not necessary to increment
the parent's usage counter in that case any more, as long as the
children counters of devices are checked along with their usage
counters in order to decide whether or not the devices may be left
in suspend after the subsequent system resume transition.

Accordingly, modify pm_runtime_force_suspend() to only call
pm_runtime_set_suspended() for devices whose usage and children
counters are at the "no references" level (the runtime PM status
of the device needs to be updated to "suspended" anyway in case
this function is called once again for the same device during the
transition under way), drop the parent usage counter incrementation
from it and update pm_runtime_force_resume() to compensate for these
changes.

Rafael J. Wysocki 17218e0092 PM / genpd: Stop/start devices without pm_runtime_force_suspend/resume()
There are problems with calling pm_runtime_force_suspend/resume()
to "stop" and "start" devices in genpd_finish_suspend() and
genpd_resume_noirq() (and in analogous hibernation-specific genpd
callbacks) after commit 122a22377a (PM / Domains: Stop/start
devices during system PM suspend/resume in genpd) as those routines
do much more than just "stopping" and "starting" devices (which was
the stated purpose of that commit) unnecessarily and may not play
well with system-wide PM driver callbacks.

First, consider the pm_runtime_force_suspend() in
genpd_finish_suspend().  If the current runtime PM status of the
device is "suspended", that function most likely does the right thing
by ignoring the device, because it should have been "stopped" already
and whatever needed to be done to deactivate it shoud have been done.
In turn, if the runtime PM status of the device is "active",
genpd_runtime_suspend() is called for it (indirectly) and (1) runs
the ->runtime_suspend callback provided by the device's driver
(assuming no bus type with ->runtime_suspend of its own), (2) "stops"
the device and (3) checks if the domain can be powered down, and then
(4) the device's runtime PM status is changed to "suspended".  Out of
the four actions above (1) is not necessary and it may be outright
harmful, (3) is pointless and (4) is questionable.  The only
operation that needs to be carried out here is (2).

The reason why (1) is not necessary is because the system-wide
PM callbacks provided by the device driver for the transition in
question have been run and they should have taken care of the
driver's part of device suspend already.  Moreover, it may be
harmful, because the ->runtime_suspend callback may want to
access the device which is partially suspended at that point
and may not be responsive.  Also, system-wide PM callbacks may
have been run already (in the previous phases of the system
transition under way) for the device's parent or for its supplier
devices (if any) and the device may not be accessible because of
that.

There also is no reason to do (3), because genpd_finish_suspend()
will repeat it anyway, and (4) potentially causes confusion to ensue
during the subsequent system transition to the working state.

Consider pm_runtime_force_resume() in genpd_resume_noirq() now.
It runs genpd_runtime_resume() for all devices with runtime PM
status set to "suspended", which includes all of the devices
whose runtime PM status was changed by pm_runtime_force_suspend()
before and may include some devices already suspended when the
pm_runtime_force_suspend() was running, which may be confusing.  The
genpd_runtime_resume() first tries to power up the domain, which
(again) is pointless, because genpd_resume_noirq() has done that
already.  Then, it "starts" the device and runs the ->runtime_resume
callback (from the driver, say) for it.  If all is well, the device
is left with the runtime PM status set to "active".

Unfortunately, running the driver's ->runtime_resume callback
before its system-wide PM callbacks and possibly before some
system-wide PM callbacks of the parent device's driver (let
alone supplier drivers) is asking for trouble, especially if
the device had been suspended before pm_runtime_force_suspend()
ran previously or if the callbacks in question expect to be run
back-to-back with their suspend-side counterparts.  It also should
not be necessary, because the system-wide PM driver callbacks that
will be invoked for the device subsequently should take care of
resuming it just fine.

[Running the driver's ->runtime_resume callback in the "noirq"
phase of the transition to the working state may be problematic
even for devices whose drivers do use pm_runtime_force_resume()
in (or as) their system-wide PM callbacks if they have suppliers
other than their parents, because it may cause the supplier to
be resumed after the consumer in some cases.]

Because of the above, modify genpd as follows:

 1. Change genpd_finish_suspend() to only "stop" devices with
    runtime PM status set to "active" (without invoking runtime PM
    callbacks for them, changing their runtime PM status and so on).

    That doesn't change the handling of devices whose drivers use
    pm_runtime_force_suspend/resume() in (or as) their system-wide
    PM callbacks and addresses the issues described above for the
    other devices.

 2. Change genpd_resume_noirq() to only "start" devices with
    runtime PM status set to "active" (without invoking runtime PM
    callbacks for them, changing their runtime PM status and so on).

    Again, that doesn't change the handling of devices whose drivers
    use pm_runtime_force_suspend/resume() in (or as) their system-wide
    PM callbacks and addresses the described issues for the other
    devices.  Devices with runtime PM status set to "suspended"
    are not started with the assumption that they will be resumed
    later, either by pm_runtime_force_resume() or via runtime PM.

 3. Change genpd_restore_noirq() to follow genpd_resume_noirq().

    That causes devices already suspended before hibernation to be
    left alone (which also is the case without the change) and
    avoids running the ->runtime_resume driver callback too early
    for the other devices.

 4. Change genpd_freeze_noirq() and genpd_thaw_noirq() in accordance
    with the above modifications.

Ulf Hansson 0026cef067 PM / wakeup: Print warn if device gets enabled as wakeup source during sleep
In general, wakeup settings are not supposed to be changed during any of
the system wide PM phases. The reason is simply that it would break
guarantees provided by the PM core, to properly act on active wakeup
sources.

However, there are exceptions to when, in particular, disabling a device as
wakeup source makes sense. For example, in cases when a driver realizes
that its device is dead during system suspend. For these scenarios, we
don't need to care about acting on the wakeup source correctly, because a
dead device shouldn't deliver wakeup signals.

To this reasoning and to help users to properly manage wakeup settings,
let's print a warning in cases someone calls device_wakeup_enable() during
system sleep.

Ulf Hansson a935424bb6 PM / domains: Don't skip driver's ->suspend|resume_noirq() callbacks
Commit 10da65423f (PM / Domains: Call driver's noirq callbacks)
started to respect driver's noirq callbacks, but while doing that it
also introduced a few potential problems.

More precisely, in genpd_finish_suspend() and genpd_resume_noirq()
the noirq callbacks at the driver level should be invoked, no matter
of whether dev->power.wakeup_path is set or not.

Additionally, the commit in question also made genpd_resume_noirq()
to ignore the return value from pm_runtime_force_resume().

Let's fix both these issues!

Ulf Hansson 0a99d767a9 PM / core: Propagate wakeup_path status flag in __device_suspend_late()
Currently the wakeup_path status flag becomes propagated from a child
device to its parent device at __device_suspend(). This allows a driver
dealing with a parent device to act on the flag from its ->suspend()
callback.

However, in situations when the wakeup_path status flag needs to be set
from a ->suspend_late() callback, its value doesn't get propagated to the
parent by the PM core. Let's address this limitation, by also propagating
the flag at __device_suspend_late().

Ulf Hansson 8512220c57 PM / core: Assign the wakeup_path status flag in __device_prepare()
The PM core in the device_prepare() phase, resets the wakeup_path status
flag to the value of device_may_wakeup(). This means if a ->prepare() or a
->suspend() callback for the device would update the device's wakeup
setting, this doesn't become reflected in the wakeup_path status flag.

In general this isn't a problem, because wakeup settings are not supposed
to be changed (via for example calling device_set_wakeup_enable()) during
any system wide suspend/resume phase.  Nevertheless there are some users,
which can be considered as legacy, that don't conform to this behaviour.

These legacy cases should be corrected, however until that is done, let's
address the issue from the PM core, by moving the assignment of the
wakeup_path status flag to the __device_suspend() phase and after the
->suspend() callback has been invoked.

Rafael J. Wysocki 7bf4e594c2 PM / wakeup: Do not fail dev_pm_attach_wake_irq() unnecessarily
Returning an error code from dev_pm_attach_wake_irq() if
device_wakeup_attach_irq() called by it returns an error is
pointless, because the wakeup source used by it may be deleted
by user space via sysfs at any time and in particular right after
dev_pm_attach_wake_irq() has returned.  Moreover, it requires
the callers of dev_pm_attach_wake_irq() to create that wakeup
source via device_wakeup_enable() upfront, but that obviously is
racy with respect to the sysfs-based manipulations of it.

To avoid the race, modify device_wakeup_attach_irq() to check
that the wakeup source it is going to use is there (and return
early otherwise), make it void (as it cannot fail after that
change) and make dev_pm_attach_wake_irq() simply call it for
the device unconditionally.

Make the PM core avoid invoking the "late" and "noirq" system-wide
suspend (or analogous) callbacks provided by device drivers directly
for devices with DPM_FLAG_SMART_SUSPEND set that are in runtime
suspend during the "late" and "noirq" phases of system-wide suspend
(or analogous) transitions.  That is only done for devices without
any middle-layer "late" and "noirq" suspend callbacks (to avoid
confusing the middle layer if there is one).

The underlying observation is that runtime PM is disabled for devices
during the "late" and "noirq" system-wide suspend phases, so if they
remain in runtime suspend from the "late" phase forward, it doesn't
make sense to invoke the "late" and "noirq" callbacks provided by
the drivers for them (arguably, the device is already suspended and
in the right state).  Thus, if the remaining driver suspend callbacks
are to be invoked directly by the core, they can be skipped.

This change really makes it possible for, say, platform device
drivers to re-use runtime PM suspend and resume callbacks by
pointing ->suspend_late and ->resume_early, respectively (and
possibly the analogous hibernation-related callback pointers too),
to them without adding any extra "is the device already suspended?"
type of checks to the callback routines, as long as they will be
invoked directly by the core.
