Report the actual error code from acpi_bus_register_driver(), it may
help future debugging (typically ENODEV as previously reported, but the
unusual cases are where it may help most).

i915.ko depends upon the acpi/video.ko module and so refuses to load if
ACPI is disabled at runtime if for example the BIOS is broken beyond
repair. acpi/video provides an optional service for i915.ko and so we
should just allow the modules to load, but do no nothing in order to let
the machines boot correctly.

Add video_disable_native_backlight quirk for SAMSUNG 900X3C/900X3D/
900X3E/900X4C/900X4D laptops.
The native intel backlight controls do not work correctly on SAMSUNG
Series 9 (900X3C/900X3D/900X3E/900X4C/900X4D) laptops:
One machine has an completely dimmed (= black) display after boot at the
GDM login screen and brightness controls work only between 0 and 5%
(= no effect).
Another machine has the same brightness control issues if an external
HDMI monitor is or gets connected, although the initial brightness is
ok.
After login to Gnome both machines always work fine.
Tested on both machines.

If the firmware has declared more than 8 video output devices, and the
one that control the internal panel's backlight is listed after the
first 8 output devices, the _DOD will not include it due to the current
i915 operation region implementation. As a result, we will not create a
backlight device for it while we should. Solve this problem by special
case the firmware that has 8+ output devices in that if we see such a
firmware, we do not test if the device is in _DOD list. The creation of
the backlight device will also enable the firmware to emit events on
backlight hotkey press when the acpi_osi= cmdline option is specified on
those affected ASUS laptops.

Commit 0b8db271f1 ("ACPI / video: check _DOD list when creating
backlight devices") checks if the video device is in the bind devices
list to decide if we should create backlight device for it, that causes
problem for one Dell Latitude E6410, where none of the video output
devices are properly bound due to the way how we did the comparing
between its _ADR and the _DOD's values. Solve this problem by comparing
the lower 12 bits of both the device's _ADR and the _DOD's values instead
of relying on bind result.

The ASUS K53SM's ACPI table queries _OSI("Windows 2012") in the video
output device's _BCL and _BCM control method instead of the usual _INI
functions of the _SB or PCI host bridge PCI0 devices. This made our
video module thought this is a pre-Win8 system when deciding if we
should register a backlight interface for it and the end result is that
a non-working acpi_video interface is registered and user is unable to
control backlight from GUI. Solve this problem by evaluating _BCL control
method before doing the decision.
Note that for some Thinkpad systems, the _BCL is also required to be
evaluated for the hotkey event to be generated no matter if we will
register an ACPI video backlight interface for it or not. Since the
thinkpad_acpi module will do this anyway we didn't add such a thing in
the video module previously. But now with this change here, the
thinkpad_acpi module is no more necessary for those systems regarding
backlight functionality.

The _DOD method lists which video output device is currently attached so
we should only care about them and ignore others. An user recently
reported that there are two acpi_video interfaces appeared on his system
and one of them doesn't work. From the acpidump, it is found that there
are more than one video output devices that have _BCM control method but
the _DOD lists only one of them. So this patch checks if the video output
device is in the _DOD list and will not create backlight device if it is
not in the list. Also, we consider the broken _DOD case(reflected by the
video->attached_count is 0) and do not change behaviour for those broken
_DOD systems.

The ThinkPad X201s has a working ACPI video backlight interface and is
shipped before Win8; then there is BIOS update that starts to query
_OSI("Windows 2012") and that would make our video module stop creating
backlight interface and caused problem for the user. Add it to the DMI
table to disable native backlight to fix this problem.

Some laptops have a working acpi_video backlight control, and using native
backlight on these causes a regression where backlight control does not work
when userspace is not handling brightness key events. Disable native_backlight

Commit 751109aad5 ("ACPI / video: Change the default for
video.use_native_backlight to 1") has changed the default for
use_native_backlight from 0 to 1, but instead of changing
use_native_backlight_dmi to true, and leaving use_native_backlight_param at -1,
it has changed use_native_backlight_param to 1.
This causes acpi_video_use_native_backlight() to always think that a value was
specified through the param, making it impossible to add a dmi based quirk
to force 0 now that the default is 1.
This fixes this by restoring the use_native_backlight_param default to -1, and
instead setting the use_native_backlight_dmi default to true.

When the windows8 related backlight problems became evident, 2 approaches
were follow in parallel, one was to stop claiming to be windows 8 / 2012,
the other was to tell acpi_video to stop registering a backlight driver.
I've read all the threads and it seems that which approach ended up being
applied to which model laptop was never really a concious decision (AFAIK):

So lets move all the models which are only on the win8 blacklist because of
brightness issues to the use_native_backlight list, which is the smaller
hammer to use to solve the backlight issues.
Making this change is esp. attractive now that 3.16 has
video.use_native_brightness=1 by default. If that new default does not get
reverted because of regressions, then we can drop all the models
with a use_native_backlight quirk, greatly reducing the number of models we've
a quirk for.

In various scenarious userspace will respond to brightness up/down keypresses
by increasing/decreasing the backlight brightness itself. If the kernel then
also changes the brightness this results in the brightness having changed 2
steps for a single keypress which is undesirable. See e.g. :

This commit delays responding to brightness up/down keypresses by 100 ms and
if userspace in that time responds by changing the backlight itself, cancels
the kernels own handling of these keypresses, fixing the 2 steps issue.

Fix backlight control for Acer TravelMate B113 Laptop by adding
it to the video_dmi_table.
A workaround before that was to use acpi_osi=Linux or
acpi_backlight=vendor on boot but even then, only the function-
keys worked.
With this change there is no need for boot parameters and DE's
controls work as well.

Some Thinkpad laptops' firmware will initiate a backlight level change
request through operation region on the events of AC plug/unplug, but
since we are not using firmware's interface to do the backlight setting
on these affected laptops, we do not want the firmware to use some
arbitrary value from its ASL variable to set the backlight level on
AC plug/unplug either.

Like all of the other *30 ThinkPad models, the W530 has a broken acpi-video
backlight control. Note in order for this to actually fix things on the
ThinkPad W530 the commit titled:

When video.use_native_backlight=1 and non intel gfx are in use, the raw
backlight device of the gfx driver will show up after acpi-video has done its
acpi_video_verify_backlight_support() check.
This causes video.use_native_backlight=1 to not have the desired result.
This patch fixes this by adding a backlight notifier and when a raw
backlight is registered or unregistered re-doing the
acpi_video_verify_backlight_support() check.

Add an acpi_video_unregister_backlight function, which only unregisters
the backlight device, and leaves the acpi_notifier in place. Some acpi_vendor
driver need this as they don't want the acpi_video# backlight device, but do
need the acpi-video driver for hotkey handling.
Chances are that this new acpi_video_unregister_backlight() is actually
what existing acpi_vendor drivers have wanted all along. Currently acpi_vendor
drivers which want to disable the acpi_video# backlight device, make 2 calls:
acpi_video_dmi_promote_vendor();
acpi_video_unregister();
The intention here is to make things independent of when acpi_video_register()
gets called. As acpi_video_register() will get called on acpi-video load time
on non intel gfx machines, while it gets called on i915 load time on intel
gfx machines.
This leads to the following 2 interesting scenarios:
a) intel gfx:
1) acpi-video module gets loaded (as it is a dependency of acpi_vendor
and i915)
2) acpi-video does NOT call acpi_video_register()
3) acpi_vendor loads (lets assume it loads before i915), calls
acpi_video_dmi_promote_vendor(); which sets
ACPI_VIDEO_BACKLIGHT_DMI_VENDOR
4) calls acpi_video_unregister -> not registered, nop
5) i915 loads, calls acpi_video_register
6) acpi_video_register registers the acpi_notifier for the hotkeys,
does NOT register a backlight device because of
ACPI_VIDEO_BACKLIGHT_DMI_VENDOR
b) non intel gfx
1) acpi-video module gets loaded (as it is a dependency acpi_vendor)
2) acpi-video calls acpi_video_register()
3) acpi_video_register registers the acpi_notifier for the hotkeys,
and a backlight device
4) acpi_vendor loads, calls acpi_video_dmi_promote_vendor()
5) calls acpi_video_unregister, this unregisters BOTH the acpi_notifier
for the hotkeys AND the backlight device
So here we have possibly the same acpi_vendor module, making the same calls,
but with different results, in one cases acpi-video does handle hotkeys,
in the other it does not.
Note that the a) scenario turns into b) if we assume the i915 module loads
before the vendor_acpi module, so we also have different behavior depending
on module loading order!
So as said I believe that quite a few existing acpi_vendor modules really
always want the behavior of a), hence this patch adds a new
acpi_video_unregister_backlight() which gives the behavior of a) independent
of module loading order.

acpi-video is unique in that it not only generates brightness up/down
keypresses, but also (sometimes) actively changes the brightness itself.
This presents an inconsistent kernel interface to userspace, basically there
are 2 different scenarios, depending on the laptop model:
1) On some laptops a brightness up/down keypress means: show a brightness osd
with the current brightness, iow it is a brightness has changed notification.
2) Where as on (a lot of) other laptops it means a brightness up/down key was
pressed, deal with it.
Most of the desktop environments interpret any press as in scenario 2, and
change the brightness up / down as a response to the key events, causing it
to be changed twice, once by acpi-video and once by the DE.
With the new default for video.use_native_backlight we will be moving even
more laptops over to behaving as in scenario 2. Making the remaining laptops
even more of a weird exception. Also note that it is hard to detect scenario
1 properly in userspace, and AFAIK none of the DE-s deals with it.
Therefor this commit changes the default of brightness_switch_enabled to 0
making its behavior consistent with all the other backlight drivers.

Like many other Windows 8 laptops the ThinkPad Helix's backlight has a
broken ACPI interface and can only be properly adjusted by using the
video card's native backlight control. This adds the ThinkPad Helix to
the list of laptops affected with this issue so that
video.use_native_backlight is enabled by default.

Some system's ACPI video backlight control interface is broken and the
native backlight control interface should be used by default. This patch
sets the use_native_backlight parameter to true for those systems so
that video backlight control interface will not be created. For detailed
models that are added here, reference the following list.
Note that the user specified kernel cmdline option will always have the
highest priority, i.e. if use_native_backlight=0 is specified and the
system is in the DMI table, the video module will not skip registering
backlight interface for it.

Some devices have duplicate entries in there brightness levels table, ie
on my Dell Latitude E6430 the table looks like this:

etc.
Notice that brightness values 0-5 are all mapped to 5. This means that
if userspace writes any value between 0 and 5 to the brightness sysfs attribute
and then reads it, it will always return 0, which is somewhat unexpected.
This is a problem for ie gnome-settings-daemon, which uses read-modify-write
logic when the users presses the brightness up or down keys. This is done
this way to take brightness changes from other sources into account.
On this specific laptop what happens once the brightness has been set to 0,
is that gsd reads 0, adds 5, writes 5, and on the next brightness up key press
again reads 0, so things get stuck at the lowest brightness setting.
Filtering out the duplicate table entries, makes any write to brightness
read back as the written value as one would expect, fixing this.

Replace direct inclusions of <acpi/acpi.h>, <acpi/acpi_bus.h> and
<acpi/acpi_drivers.h>, which are incorrect, with <linux/acpi.h>
inclusions and remove some inclusions of those files that aren't
necessary.
First of all, <acpi/acpi.h>, <acpi/acpi_bus.h> and <acpi/acpi_drivers.h>
should not be included directly from any files that are built for
CONFIG_ACPI unset, because that generally leads to build warnings about
undefined symbols in !CONFIG_ACPI builds. For CONFIG_ACPI set,
<linux/acpi.h> includes those files and for CONFIG_ACPI unset it
provides stub ACPI symbols to be used in that case.
Second, there are ordering dependencies between those files that always
have to be met. Namely, it is required that <acpi/acpi_bus.h> be included
prior to <acpi/acpi_drivers.h> so that the acpi_pci_root declarations the
latter depends on are always there. And <acpi/acpi.h> which provides
basic ACPICA type declarations should always be included prior to any other
ACPI headers in CONFIG_ACPI builds. That also is taken care of including
<linux/acpi.h> as appropriate.

With commit 2c62333a40 "ACPI / video: Quirk initial backlight level 0"
we do not need to have the following systems in DMI table, so remove them.
HP Pavilion m4, HP 1000 Notebook PC, HP Pavilion g6 Notebook PC,
HP Pavilion dm4, Fujitsu E753, HP Folio 13-2000.
With this change, the use_bios_initial_backlight module parameter is no
longer needed and thus removed.

It turned out other systems also share the same problem with bug 63111
so I made a patch to catch initial brightness level 0 problem. With that
patch applied, we do not need to place HP 250 G1 in DMI table.

Some firmware doesn't initialize initial backlight level to a proper
value and _BQC will return 0 on first time evaluation. We used to be
able to detect such incorrect value with our code logic, as value 0
normally isn't a valid value in _BCL. But with the introduction of Win8,
firmware begins to fill _BCL with values from 0 to 100, now 0 becomes
a valid value but that value will make user's screen black. This patch
test initial _BQC for value 0, if such a value is returned, do not use
it.

When testing if the firmware's initial value is valid, we should use
the corrected level value instead of the raw value returned from
firmware.

On HP 250 G1 laptops, BIOS reports minimum backlight on boot and
causes backlight to dim completely. This ignores the initial backlight
values and set to max brightness.

According to Matthew Garrett, "Windows 8 leaves backlight control up
to individual graphics drivers rather than making ACPI calls itself.
There's plenty of evidence to suggest that the Intel driver for
Windows [8] doesn't use the ACPI interface, including the fact that
it's broken on a bunch of machines when the OS claims to support
Windows 8. The simplest thing to do appears to be to disable the
ACPI backlight interface on these systems".
So for Win8 systems, if there is native backlight control interface
registered by GPU driver, ACPI video does not need to register its own.
Since there are systems that don't work well with this approach, a
parameter for video module named use_native_backlight is introduced and
has the value of false by default. For users who have a broken ACPI
video backlight interface, video.use_native_backlight=1 is needed in
kernel cmdline.

The backlight control and event delivery functionality provided by ACPI
video module is mixed together and registered all during video device
enumeration time. As a result, the two functionality are also removed
together on module unload time or by the acpi_video_unregister function.
The two functionalities are actually independent and one may be useful
while the other one may be broken, so it is desirable to seperate the
two functionalities such that it is clear and easy to disable one
functionality without affecting the other one.
APIs to selectively remove backlight control interface and/or event
delivery functionality can be easily added once needed.
