Implemented a change/cleanup for the handling of invalid ACPI names.
Names are now validated and repaired only when
1) entering a new name into the namespace and
2) disassembling a named AML opcode. A warning is only displayed in
debug mode or when the interpreter is in "strict" mode, since some
working machines do in fact contain invalid ACPI names.

Currently, whoever wants to use ACPI device resources has to call
acpi_walk_resources() to browse the buffer returned by the _CRS
method for the given device and create filters passed to that
routine to apply to the individual resource items. This generally
is cumbersome, time-consuming and inefficient. Moreover, it may
be problematic if resource conflicts need to be resolved, because
the different users of _CRS will need to do that in a consistent
way. However, if there are resource conflicts, the ACPI core
should be able to resolve them centrally instead of relying on
various users of acpi_walk_resources() to handle them correctly
together.
For this reason, introduce a new function, acpi_dev_get_resources(),
that can be used by subsystems to obtain a list of struct resource
objects corresponding to the ACPI device resources returned by
_CRS and, if necessary, to apply additional preprocessing routine
to the ACPI resources before converting them to the struct resource
format.
Make the ACPI code that creates platform device objects use
acpi_dev_get_resources() for resource processing instead of executing
acpi_walk_resources() twice by itself, which causes it to be much
more straightforward and easier to follow.
In the future, acpi_dev_get_resources() can be extended to meet
the needs of the ACPI PNP subsystem and other users of _CRS in
the kernel.

With ACPI 5 it is now possible to enumerate traditional SoC
peripherals, like serial bus controllers and slave devices behind
them. These devices are typically based on IP-blocks used in many
existing SoC platforms and platform drivers for them may already
be present in the kernel tree.
To make driver "porting" more straightforward, add ACPI support to
the platform bus type. Instead of writing ACPI "glue" drivers for
the existing platform drivers, register the platform bus type with
ACPI to create platform device objects for the drivers and bind the
corresponding ACPI handles to those platform devices.
This should allow us to reuse the existing platform drivers for the
devices in question with the minimum amount of modifications.

With ACPI 5 we are starting to see devices that don't natively support
discovery but can be enumerated with the help of the ACPI namespace.
Typically, these devices can be represented in the Linux device driver
model as platform devices or some serial bus devices, like SPI or I2C
devices.
Since we want to re-use existing drivers for those devices, we need a
way for drivers to specify the ACPI IDs of supported devices, so that
they can be matched against device nodes in the ACPI namespace. To
this end, it is sufficient to add a pointer to an array of supported
ACPI device IDs, that can be provided by the driver, to struct device.
Moreover, things like ACPI power management need to have access to
the ACPI handle of each supported device, because that handle is used
to invoke AML methods associated with the corresponding ACPI device
node. The ACPI handles of devices are now stored in the archdata
member structure of struct device whose definition depends on the
architecture and includes the ACPI handle only on x86 and ia64. Since
the pointer to an array of supported ACPI IDs is added to struct
device_driver in an architecture-independent way, it is logical to
move the ACPI handle from archdata to struct device itself at the same
time. This also makes code more straightforward in some places and
follows the example of Device Trees that have a poiter to struct
device_node in there too.

Even if acpi_processor_handle_eject() offlines cpu, there is a chance
to online the cpu after that. So the patch closes the window by using
get/put_online_cpus().
Why does the patch change _cpu_up() logic?
The patch cares the race of hot-remove cpu and _cpu_up(). If the patch
does not change it, there is the following race.
hot-remove cpu | _cpu_up()
------------------------------------- ------------------------------------
call acpi_processor_handle_eject() |
call cpu_down() |
call get_online_cpus() |

call put_online_cpus() |
| start and continue _cpu_up()
return acpi_processor_remove() |
continue hot-remove the cpu |
So _cpu_up() can continue to itself. And hot-remove cpu can also continue

hot-remove cpu | _cpu_up()
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
call acpi_processor_handle_eject() |
call cpu_down() |
call get_online_cpus() |

Some bus types don't support power management natively, but generally
there may be device nodes in ACPI tables corresponding to the devices
whose bus types they are (under ACPI 5 those bus types may be SPI,
I2C and platform). If that is the case, standard ACPI power
management may be applied to those devices, although currently the
kernel has no means for that.
For this reason, provide a set of routines that may be used as power
management callbacks for such devices. This may be done in three
different ways.
(1) Device drivers handling the devices in question may run
acpi_dev_pm_attach() in their .probe() routines, which (on
success) will cause the devices to be added to the general ACPI
PM domain and ACPI power management will be used for them going
forward. Then, acpi_dev_pm_detach() may be used to remove the
devices from the general ACPI PM domain if ACPI power management
is not necessary for them any more.
(2) The devices' subsystems may use acpi_subsys_runtime_suspend(),
acpi_subsys_runtime_resume(), acpi_subsys_prepare(),
acpi_subsys_suspend_late(), acpi_subsys_resume_early() as their
power management callbacks in the same way as the general ACPI
PM domain does that.
(3) The devices' drivers may execute acpi_dev_suspend_late(),
acpi_dev_resume_early(), acpi_dev_runtime_suspend(),
acpi_dev_runtime_resume() from their power management callbacks
as appropriate, if that's absolutely necessary, but it is not
recommended to do that, because such drivers may not work
without ACPI support as a result.

If the caller of acpi_bus_set_power() already has a pointer to the
struct acpi_device object corresponding to the device in question, it
doesn't make sense for it to go through acpi_bus_get_device(), which
may be costly, because it involves acquiring the global ACPI
namespace mutex.
For this reason, export the function operating on struct acpi_device
objects used internally by acpi_bus_set_power(), so that it may be
called instead of acpi_bus_set_power() in the above case, and change
its name to acpi_device_set_power().
Additionally, introduce two inline wrappers for checking ACPI PM
capabilities of devices represented by struct acpi_device objects.

Two device wakeup management routines in device_pm.c and sleep.c,
acpi_pm_device_run_wake() and acpi_pm_device_sleep_wake(), take a
device pointer argument and use it to obtain the ACPI handle of the
corresponding ACPI namespace node. That handle is then used to get
the address of the struct acpi_device object corresponding to the
struct device passed as the argument.
Unfortunately, that last operation may be costly, because it involves
taking the global ACPI namespace mutex, so it shouldn't be carried
out too often. However, the callers of those routines usually call
them in a row with acpi_pm_device_sleep_state() which also takes that
mutex for the same reason, so it would be more efficient if they ran
acpi_bus_get_device() themselves to obtain a pointer to the struct
acpi_device object in question and then passed that pointer to the
appropriate PM routines.
To make that possible, split each of the PM routines mentioned above
in two parts, one taking a struct acpi_device pointer argument and
the other implementing the current interface for compatibility.
Additionally, change acpi_pm_device_run_wake() to actually return
an error code if there is an error while setting up runtime remote
wakeup for the device.

There are systems where video module known to work fine regardless
of broken _DOD and ignoring returned value here doesn't cause
any issues later. This should fix brightness controls on some laptops.

Make ACPI power management routines and PCI power management
routines depending on ACPI take device PM QoS flags into account
when deciding what power state to put the device into.
In particular, after this change acpi_pm_device_sleep_state() will
not return ACPI_STATE_D3_COLD as the deepest available low-power
state if PM_QOS_FLAG_NO_POWER_OFF is requested for the device and it
will not require remote wakeup to work for the device in the returned
low-power state if there is at least one PM QoS flags request for the
device, but PM_QOS_FLAG_REMOTE_WAKEUP is not requested for it.
Accordingly, acpi_pci_set_power_state() will refuse to put the
device into D3cold if PM_QOS_FLAG_NO_POWER_OFF is requested for it.

Memory is allocated with kzalloc() and assigned to
'physical_node'. Then 'physical_node->node_id' is initialized with a
call to 'find_first_zero_bit()', if that results in a value greater
than ACPI_MAX_PHYSICAL_NODE we'll end up jumping to the 'err:' label
and there leave the function and let 'physical_node' go out of scope
and leak the memory we allocated.
This patch fixes the leak by simply freeing the unused/unneeded memory
pointed to by 'physical_node' just before we jump to 'err:'.

Add support to export the device description obtained from the ACPI _STR
method, if one exists for a device, to user-space via a sysfs interface.
This new interface provides a standard and platform neutral way for users
to obtain the description text stored in the ACPI _STR method. If no
_STR method exists for the device, no sysfs 'description' file will be
created. The 'description' file will be located in the /sys/devices/
directory using the device's path.
/sys/device/<bus>/<bridge path>/<device path>.../firmware_node/description
Example:
/sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00.07.0/0000:0e:00.0/firmware_node/description
It can also be located using the ACPI device path, for example:
/sys/devices/LNXSYSTM:00/device:00/ACPI0004:00/PNP0A08:00/device:13/device:15/description
/sys/devices/LNXSYSTM:00/device:00/ACPI0004:00/ACPI0004:01/ACPI0007:02/description
Execute the 'cat' command on the 'description' file to obtain the
description string for that device.
This patch also includes documentation describing how the new sysfs
interface works
Changes from v1-v2 based on comments by Len Brown and Fengguang Wu
* Removed output "No Description" and leaving a NULL attribute if the
_STR method failed to evaluate.
* In acpi_device_remove_files() removed the redundent check of
dev->pnp.str_obj before calling free. This check triggered a message
from smatch.

Parsing acpi table entries may fall into an infinite loop on a buggy BIOS
which has entry length=0 in acpi table.
Instead of kernel hang with few failure clue which leads to heavy lifting debug
effort, this patch hardens kernel boot by booting into non NUMA mode. The debug
info left in log buffer helps people identify the issue.

By enlarging the GPE storm threshold back to 20, that laptop's

The Linux EC driver includes a mechanism to detect GPE storms,
and switch from interrupt-mode to polling mode. However, polling
mode sometimes doesn't work, so the workaround is problematic.
Also, different systems seem to need the threshold for detecting
the GPE storm at different levels.
ACPI_EC_STORM_THRESHOLD was initially 20 when it's created, and
was changed to 8 in 2.6.28 commit 06cf7d3c7 "ACPI: EC: lower interrupt storm
threshold" to fix kernel bug 11892 by forcing the laptop in that bug to
work in polling mode. However in bug 45151, it works fine in interrupt
mode if we lift the threshold back to 20.
This patch makes the threshold a module parameter so that user has a
flexible option to debug/workaround this issue.
The default is unchanged.
This is also a preparation patch to fix specific systems:

Pull drm merge (part 1) from Dave Airlie:
"So first of all my tree and uapi stuff has a conflict mess, its my
fault as the nouveau stuff didn't hit -next as were trying to rebase
regressions out of it before we merged.
Highlights:
- SH mobile modesetting driver and associated helpers
- some DRM core documentation
- i915 modesetting rework, haswell hdmi, haswell and vlv fixes, write
combined pte writing, ilk rc6 support,
- nouveau: major driver rework into a hw core driver, makes features
like SLI a lot saner to implement,
- psb: add eDP/DP support for Cedarview
- radeon: 2 layer page tables, async VM pte updates, better PLL

The rest is general grab bag of fixes.
So why part 1? well I have the exynos pull req which came in a bit
late but was waiting for me to do something they shouldn't have and it
looks fairly safe, and David Howells has some more header cleanups
he'd like me to pull, that seem like a good idea, but I'd like to get
this merge out of the way so -next dosen't get blocked."
Tons of conflicts mostly due to silly include line changes, but mostly
mindless. A few other small semantic conflicts too, noted from Dave's
pre-merged branch.

Previous patches stored ACPI tables provided via initrd in a memblock reserved
area.
If a table is loaded and the table type of an initrd provided one matches,
the one from initrd is prefered.
In case of a SSDT table, the OEM table id also has to match.
ACPI tables can be loaded at boot time (static table pointers in XSDT),
but also dynamically any time later via ASL commands load() or loadTable().
The override mechanism always works.

The ACPI BGRT driver accesses the BIOS logo image when it initializes.
However, ACPI 5.0 (which introduces the BGRT) recommends putting the
logo image in EFI boot services memory, so that the OS can reclaim that
memory. Production systems follow this recommendation, breaking the
ACPI BGRT driver.
Move the bulk of the BGRT code to run during a new EFI late
initialization phase, which occurs after switching EFI to virtual mode,
and after initializing ACPI, but before freeing boot services memory.
Copy the BIOS logo image to kernel memory at that point, and make it
accessible to the BGRT driver. Rework the existing ACPI BGRT driver to
act as a simple wrapper exposing that image (and the properties from the
BGRT) via sysfs.

This patch changes the function signature of walk_root_bridge().
We can omit _STA, _SEG, and _BBN evaluation by passing not acpi_handle
but acpi_pci_root. Now that acpi_pci_slot_add() which is the only
caller of walk_root_bridge() gets acpi_pci_root structure, changing
signature of walk_root_bridge() is reasonable.

This patch changes .add/.remove interfaces of acpi_pci_driver.
In the current implementation acpi_handle is passed as a parameter
of .add/.remove interface. However, the acpi_pci_root structure
contains more useful information than just the acpi_handle. This
enables us to avoid some useless lookups in each acpi_pci_driver.
Note: This changes interfaces used by acpi_pci_register_driver(), an
exported symbol. This patch updates all the in-kernel users, but any
out-of-kernel acpi_pci_register_driver() users will need updates.

According to ACPI spec, tc1 and tc2 are used by OSPM
to anticipate the temperature trends.
We introduced the same concept to the generic thermal layer
for passive cooling, but now it seems that these values
are hard to be used on other platforms.
So We introduce .get_trend() as a more general solution.
For the platform thermal drivers that have their own way to
anticipate the temperature trends, they should provide
their own .get_trend() callback.
Or else, we will calculate the temperature trends by simply
comparing the current temperature and the cached previous
temperature reading.

A USB port's position and connectability can't be identified on some boards
via USB hub registers. ACPI _UPC and _PLD can help to resolve this issue
and so it is necessary to bind USB with ACPI. This patch is to allow ACPI
binding with USB-3.0 hub.
Current ACPI only can bind one struct-device to one ACPI device node.
This can not work with USB-3.0 hub, because the USB-3.0 hub has two logical
devices. Each works for USB-2.0 and USB-3.0 devices. In the Linux USB subsystem,
those two logical hubs are treated as two seperate devices that have two struct
devices. But in the ACPI DSDT, these two logical hubs share one ACPI device
node. So there is a requirement to bind multi struct-devices to one ACPI
device node. This patch is to resolve such problem.
Following is the ACPI device nodes' description under xhci hcd.

The standard video events may be overloaded for device specific
purposes. For example AMD ACPI interface overloads
ACPI_VIDEO_NOTIFY_PROBE (0x81) to signal AMD-specific events. In such
cases we don't want to send the keypress (KEY_SWITCHVIDEOMODE) to the
userspace because the user did not press the mode switch key (the
spurious keypress confuses the DE which usually changes the
display configuration and messes up a dual-screen setup).
This patch gives the handlers the chance to examine the event and
block the keypress if the event is device specific.

Currently we have the cpuidle_device field in the acpi_processor_power structure.
This adds a dependency between processor.h and cpuidle.h
Although it is not a real problem, removing this dependency has the benefit of
separating a bit more the cpuidle code from the rest of the acpi code.
Also, the compilation should be a bit improved because we do no longer
include cpuidle.h in processor.h. The preprocessor was generating 30418 loc
and with this patch it generates 30256 loc for processor_thermal.c, a file
which is not concerned at all by cpuidle, like processor_perflib.c and
processor_throttling.c.
That may sound ridiculous, but "small streams make big rivers" :P

acpi_power_on ---> lock resource_lock
__acpi_power_on
acpi_power_on_device
acpi_power_get_inferred_state
acpi_power_get_list_state ---> lock resource_lock
This patch adds a new mutex "devices_lock" to protect the devices list
and calls acpi_power_on_device in acpi_power_on, instead of
__acpi_power_on, after the resource_lock is released.

It turns out that there are ACPI BIOSes defining device objects with
_PSx and without either _PSC or _PRx. For devices corresponding to
those ACPI objetcs __acpi_bus_get_power() returns ACPI_STATE_UNKNOWN
and their initial power states are regarded as unknown as a result.
If such a device is a parent of another power-manageable device, the
child cannot be put into a low-power state through ACPI, because
__acpi_bus_set_power() refuses to change power states of devices
whose parents' power states are unknown.
To work around this problem, observe that the ACPI power state of
a device cannot be higher-power (lower-number) than the power state
of its parent. Thus, if the device's _PSC method or the
configuration of its power resources indicates that the device is
in D0, the device's parent has to be in D0 as well. Consequently,
if the parent's power state is unknown when we've just learned that
its child's power state is D0, we can safely set the parent's
power.state field to ACPI_STATE_D0.

If acpi_pci_osc_support() fails for the given flags, it doesn't make
sense to call acpi_pci_osc_control_set() down the road for the same
flags, because it will certainly fail too. Moreover, problem
diagnostics is then harder, because it is not too easy to identify
the reason of the _OSC failure in those cases.
For this reason, check the status returned by acpi_pci_osc_support()
for PCIe support flags and do not attempt to execute
acpi_pci_osc_control_set() for those flags and print a message if
it's "failure". For compatibility with the existing code, disable

_GTS and _BFS were added to the suspend/resume flow
in the ACPI 2.0 specification.
Linux dutifully implemented _GTS and _BFS.
We discovered that it was rarely seen in systems
in the field. Further, some of those systems had
AML so bogus that it could never work -- proof that
no other operating system supports _GTS and _BFS.
So we made _GTS and _BFS optional via modparam,
and disabled them by default.
But we've had to complicate some code to keep
this support in the kernel, as these methods are defined
to be evaluated very close to sleep entry and exit.
Indeed, no other AML is ever evaluated with interrupts off.
We have submitted a proposal for _GTS and _BFS
to be officially removed from the ACPI specification
on the next revision. Here we remove it from Linux.

ACPI backlight device is used. This flag will definitively break
the backlight interface (even the vendor interface) untill next
reboot. It's why we should prevent video.ko from being used here
and we can't rely on a later call to acpi_video_unregister().

Instead of adding a big blacklist in video_detect.c to set
ACPI_VIDEO_BACKLIGHT_DMI_VENDOR correctly, let external modules
promote or demote themselves when they know the generic video
module won't work.
Currently drivers where using acpi_video_unregister() directly
but:
- That didn't respect any acpi_backlight=[video|vendor] parameter
provided by the user.
- Any later call to acpi_video_register() would still re-load the
generic video module (and some gpu drivers are doing that).
This patch fix those two issues.

Commit d640113fe8 introduced a regression on SMP
systems where the processor core with ACPI id zero is disabled
(typically should be the case because of hyperthreading).
The regression got spread through stable kernels.
On 3.0.X it got introduced via 3.0.18.
Such platforms may be rare, but do exist.
Look out for a disabled processor with acpi_id 0 in dmesg:

On certain bios, resume hangs if cpus are allowed to enter idle states
during suspend [1].
This was fixed in apci idle driver [2].But intel_idle driver does not
have this fix. Thus instead of replicating the fix in both the idle
drivers, or in more platform specific idle drivers if needed, the
more general cpuidle infrastructure could handle this.
A suspend callback in cpuidle_driver could handle this fix. But
a cpuidle_driver provides only basic functionalities like platform idle
state detection capability and mechanisms to support entry and exit
into CPU idle states. All other cpuidle functions are found in the
cpuidle generic infrastructure for good reason that all cpuidle
drivers, irrepective of their platforms will support these functions.
One option therefore would be to register a suspend callback in cpuidle
which handles this fix. This could be called through a PM_SUSPEND_PREPARE
notifier. But this is too generic a notfier for a driver to handle.
Also, ideally the job of cpuidle is not to handle side effects of suspend.
It should expose the interfaces which "handle cpuidle 'during' suspend"
or any other operation, which the subsystems call during that respective
operation.
The fix demands that during suspend, no cpus should be allowed to enter
deep C-states. The interface cpuidle_uninstall_idle_handler() in cpuidle
ensures that. Not just that it also kicks all the cpus which are already
in idle out of their idle states which was being done during cpu hotplug
through a CPU_DYING_FROZEN callbacks.
Now the question arises about when during suspend should
cpuidle_uninstall_idle_handler() be called. Since we are dealing with
drivers it seems best to call this function during dpm_suspend().
Delaying the call till dpm_suspend_noirq() does no harm, as long as it is
before cpu_hotplug_begin() to avoid race conditions with cpu hotpulg
operations. In dpm_suspend_noirq(), it would be wise to place this call
before suspend_device_irqs() to avoid ugly interactions with the same.
Ananlogously, during resume.

When the system is booted with some cpus offline, the idle
driver is not initialized. When a cpu is set online, the
acpi code call the intel idle init function. Unfortunately
this code introduce a dependency between intel_idle and acpi.
This patch is intended to remove this dependency by using the
notifier of intel_idle. This patch has the benefit of
encapsulating the intel_idle driver and remove some exported
functions.

Signed-off-by: Rafael J. Wysocki <rjw@sisk.pl>
Modify acpi_bus_type so that it executes PM callbacks provided
by drivers through their struct dev_pm_ops objects, if present,
while still allowing the legacy ACPI PM callbacks to take precedence.
This will make it possible to convert ACPI drivers one by one to
handling PM through struct dev_pm_ops instead of the legacy way.
The code added by this change is temporary and will be removed
when all of the drivers in question have been switched over to
the PM handling based on struct dev_pm_ops.

None of the drivers implementing the ACPI device suspend callback
uses the pm_message_t argument of it, so this argument may be dropped
entirely from that callback. This will simplify switching the ACPI

ACPI sysfs.c strlen fix
The acpi_pad driver can get stuck in destroy_power_saving_task()
waiting for kthread_stop() to stop a power_saving thread. The problem
is that the isolated_cpus_lock mutex is owned when
destroy_power_saving_task() calls kthread_stop(), which waits for a
power_saving thread to end, and the power_saving thread tries to
acquire the isolated_cpus_lock when it calls round_robin_cpu(). This
patch fixes the issue by making round_robin_cpu() use its own mutex.

Commit e978aa7d7d ( cpuidle: Move
dev->last_residency update to driver enter routine; remove dev->last_state)
was breaking suspend on laptops, as reported in the below link
- https://lkml.org/lkml/2011/11/11/164
This was fixed in commit 3439a8da16
(ACPI / cpuidle: Remove acpi_idle_suspend (to fix suspend regression)
by removing acpi_idle_suspend flag.
- https://lkml.org/lkml/2011/11/14/74
But this did fix did not work on all systems
as Suspend/resume regression was reported on Lenovo S10-3
recently by Dave.
- https://lkml.org/lkml/2012/5/27/115
It looked like with commit e978aa7d broke suspend and
with commit 3439a8da resume was not working with acpi_idle driver.
This patch fixes the regression that caused this issue
in the first place. acpi_idle_suspend flag is essential on
some x86 systems to prevent the cpus from going to deeper C-states
when suspend is triggered ( commit b04e7bdb98 )
So reverting the commit 3439a8da is essential.
By default, irqs are disabled in cpu_idle arch specific call
and re-enabled in idle state return path . During suspend,
the acpi_idle_suspend flag is set, which
prevents the cpus from going to deeper idle states,
it is essential to enabling the irqs in this return path too.
To address the suspend issue,
we were not re-enabling the interrupts while returning from
acpi_idle_enter_bm() routine if acpi_idle_suspend flag is set.
and this caused suspend failure.
In addition to the above, to improve the readability of the code,
return of -ENIVAL is replaced with -EBUSY in acpi_idle_suspend
return path. Implying that the system is currently busy when suspend
is in progress, which prevents the cpus from entering deeper C-states.

PCI/PM: add PCIe runtime D3cold support

PCI/PM: add runtime PM support to PCIe port
ACPI/PM: specify lowest allowed state for device sleep state
Lower device sleep state can save more power, but has more exit
latency too. Sometimes, to satisfy some power QoS and other
requirement, we need to constrain the lowest device sleep state.
In this patch, a parameter to specify lowest allowed state for
acpi_pm_device_sleep_state is added. So that the caller can enforce
the constraint via the parameter.
This is needed by PCIe D3cold support, where the lowest power state
allowed may be D3_HOT instead of default D3_COLD.

Changed acpi_bus_hot_remove_device() to support _OST. This function is
also changed to global so that it can be called from hotplug notify
handlers to perform hot-remove operation.
Changed acpi_eject_store(), which is the sysfs eject handler. It checks
eject_pending to see if the request was originated from ACPI eject
notification. If not, it calls _OST(0x103,84,) per Figure 6-37 in ACPI
5.0 spec.
Added eject_pending bit to acpi_device_flags. This bit is set when the
kernel has received an ACPI eject notification, but does not initiate
its hot-remove operation by itself.
Added struct acpi_eject_event. This structure is used to pass extended

Added acpi_evaluate_hotplug_opt(). All ACPI hotplug handlers must call
this function when evaluating _OST for hotplug operations. If the
platform does not support _OST, this function returns AE_NOT_FOUND and
has no effect on the platform.
ACPI_HOTPLUG_OST is defined when all relevant ACPI hotplug operations,
such as CPU, memory and container hotplug, are enabled. This assures
consistent behavior among the hotplug operations with regarding the
_OST support. When ACPI_HOTPLUG_OST is not defined, this function is
a no-op.
ACPI PCI hotplug is not enhanced to support _OST at this time since it
is a legacy method being replaced by PCIe native hotplug. _OST support
for ACPI PCI hotplug may be added in future if necessary.
Some platforms may require the OS to support _OST in order to support
ACPI hotplug operations. For example, if a platform has the management
console where user can request a hotplug operation from, this _OST
support would be required for the management console to show the result
of the hotplug request to user.
Added macro definitions of _OST source events and status codes.
Also renamed OSC_SB_CPUHP_OST_SUPPORT to OSC_SB_HOTPLUG_OST_SUPPORT
since this _OSC bit is not specific to CPU hotplug. This bit is
defined in Table 6-147 of ACPI 5.0 as follows.
Bits: 3

Definition: This bit is set if OSPM will evaluate the _OST
object defined under a device when processing

"This code reworks all the "trampoline"/"realmode" code (various bits
that need to live in the first megabyte of memory, most but not all of

The comparison between the system sleep state being entered
and the lowest system sleep state the given device may wake up
from in acpi_pm_device_sleep_state() is reversed, because the
specification (ACPI 5.0) says that for wakeup to work:
"The sleeping state being entered must be less than or equal to the
power state declared in element 1 of the _PRW object."
In other words, the state returned by _PRW is the deepest
(lowest-power) system sleep state the device is capable of waking up
the system from.
Moreover, acpi_pm_device_sleep_state() also should check if the
wakeup capability is supported through ACPI, because in principle it
may be done via native PCIe PME, for example, in which case _SxW
should not be evaluated.

After recent changes of the ACPI device power states definitions, if
power resources are not used for the device's power management, the
state returned by __acpi_bus_get_power() cannot exceed D3hot, because
the return values of _PSC are 0 through 3. However, if the _PR3
method is not present for the device and _PS3 returns 3, we have to
assume that the device is in D3cold, so the value returned by
__acpi_bus_get_power() in that case should be 4.
Similarly, acpi_power_get_inferred_state() should take the power
resources for the D3hot state into account in general, so that it
can return 3 if those resources are "on" or 4 (D3cold) otherwise.
Fix the the above two issues and make sure that if both _PSC and
_PR3 are present for the device, the power resources listed by _PR3
will be used to determine if the number 3 returned by _PSC is meant
to represent D3cold or D3hot.

When the system is woken up by the ACPI fixed power button, currently there
is no way of userspace becoming aware that the power button was pressed.
OLPC would like to know this, so that we can respond appropriately.
For example, if the system was woken up by a network packet, we know
we can go back to sleep very quickly. But if the user explicitly woke the
system with the power button, we're going to want to stay awake for a
while.
The wakeup count mechanism seems like a good fit for communicating this.
Mark the fixed power button as wakeup-enabled, and increment its wakeup
counter when the system is woken with the power button. (The wakeup counter
is also incremented when the power button is pressed during system
operation; this is already handled by an existing acpi-button codepath).

Commit 1cc0c998fd ("ACPI: Fix D3hot v D3cold confusion") introduced a
bug in __acpi_bus_set_power() and changed the behavior of
acpi_pci_set_power_state() in such a way that it generally doesn't work
as expected if PCI_D3hot is passed to it as the second argument.
First off, if ACPI_STATE_D3 (equal to ACPI_STATE_D3_COLD) is passed to
__acpi_bus_set_power() and the explicit_set flag is set for the D3cold
state, the function will try to execute AML method called "_PS4", which
doesn't exist.
Fix this by adding a check to ensure that the name of the AML method
to execute for transitions to ACPI_STATE_D3_COLD is correct in
__acpi_bus_set_power(). Also make sure that the explicit_set flag
for ACPI_STATE_D3_COLD will be set if _PS3 is present and modify
acpi_power_transition() to avoid accessing power resources for
ACPI_STATE_D3_COLD, because they don't exist.
Second, if PCI_D3hot is passed to acpi_pci_set_power_state() as the
target state, the function will request a transition to
ACPI_STATE_D3_HOT instead of ACPI_STATE_D3. However,
ACPI_STATE_D3_HOT is now only marked as supported if the _PR3 AML
method is defined for the given device, which is rare. This causes
problems to happen on systems where devices were successfully put
into ACPI D3 by pci_set_power_state(PCI_D3hot) which doesn't work
now. In particular, some unused graphics adapters are not turned
off as a result.
To fix this issue restore the old behavior of
acpi_pci_set_power_state(), which is to request a transition to
ACPI_STATE_D3 (equal to ACPI_STATE_D3_COLD) if either PCI_D3hot or
PCI_D3cold is passed to it as the argument.
This approach is not ideal, because generally power should not
be removed from devices if PCI_D3hot is the target power state,
but since this behavior is relied on, we have no choice but to
restore it at the moment and spend more time on designing a
better solution in the future.

By Lin Ming via Len Brown:
* 'release' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/lenb/linux:
ACPI: Fix D3hot v D3cold confusion
Before this patch, ACPI_STATE_D3 incorrectly referenced D3hot
in some places, but D3cold in other places.
After this patch, ACPI_STATE_D3 always means ACPI_STATE_D3_COLD;
and all references to D3hot use ACPI_STATE_D3_HOT.
ACPI's _PR3 method is used to enter both D3hot and D3cold states.
What distinguishes D3hot from D3cold is the presence _PR3
(Power Resources for D3hot) If these resources are all ON,
then the state is D3hot. If _PR3 is not present,
or all _PR0 resources for the devices are OFF,
then the state is D3cold.
This patch applies after Linux-3.4-rc1.
A future syntax cleanup may remove ACPI_STATE_D3
to emphasize that it always means ACPI_STATE_D3_COLD.

Jörg bisected the regression to this commit.
That commit fixes another machine (see
https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=11533
for details) that has a BIOS bug and doesn't support ACPI reset.
However, at least one of those other reporters no longer even has the
machine in question, and had a different workaround to begin with.
Besides, it clearly was a buggy BIOS. Let's not break the correct case

This reverts commit 6fe0d06282.
Paul bisected this regression.
The conversion was done blindly and is wrong, as it does not provide a
primary handler to disable the level type irq on the device level.
Neither does it set the IRQF_ONESHOT flag which handles that at the irq
line level. This can't be done as the interrupt might be shared, though
we might extend the core to force it.
So an interrupt on this line will wake up the thread, but immediately
unmask the irq after that. Due to the interrupt being level type the
hardware interrupt is raised over and over and prevents the irq thread
from handling it. Fail.
request_irq() unfortunately does not refuse such a request and the patch
was obviously never tested with real interrupts.

Using a u64 here creates an endian bug. We store a u32 number in the
top byte which is a larger number than intended on big endian systems.
There is no reason to use a 64 bit data type here, I guess it was just
an oversight.
I removed the initialization to zero as well. It's needed with a u64

The acpi_processor_cst_has_changed() function is invoked from a
CPU_ONLINE or CPU_DEAD function, which might well execute on CPU 0
even though the CPU being hotplugged is some other CPU. In addition,
acpi_processor_cst_has_changed() invokes smp_processor_id() without
protection, resulting in splats when onlining CPUs.
This commit therefore changes the smp_processor_id() to pr->id, as is
used elsewhere in the code, for example, in acpi_processor_add().

The function acpi_processor_add is stored in the ops.add field of a
acpi_driver structure. This function is then called in
acpi_bus_driver_init. On failure, this function clears the field
device->driver_data, but does not free its contents. Thus the free has to
be done by the add function. In acpi_processor_add, the corresponding
value is pr. This value is currently freed on failure before storing it in
device->driver_data, but not after. This free is added in the error
handling code at the end of the function. The per_cpu variable

new parameter can disable trigger action and control is taken

An HP laptop (Pavilion G4-1016tx) has the following code in _TMP:
Store (\_SB.PCI0.LPCB.EC0.RTMP, Local0)
If (LGreaterEqual (Local0, S4TP))
{
Store (One, HTS4)
}
S4TP is initialised at 0 and not programmed further until either _HOT or
_CRT is called. If we evaluate _TMP before the trip points then HTS4 will
always be set, causing the firmware to generate a message on boot
complaining that the system shut down because of overheating. The simplest
solution is just to reverse the checking of trip points and _TMP in thermal
init.

Device(Dev1)

Then Dev0 is resumed first and it goes into D0 state.
But Dev1 is left in D0_Uninitialised state.
This is wrong. In this case, Dev1 must be resumed too.
In order to hand this case, each power resource maintains a list of
devices which relies on it.
When power resource is ON, it will check if the devices on its list
can be resumed. The device can only be resumed when all the power

Pull "Disintegrate and delete asm/system.h" from David Howells:
"Here are a bunch of patches to disintegrate asm/system.h into a set of
separate bits to relieve the problem of circular inclusion
dependencies.
I've built all the working defconfigs from all the arches that I can
and made sure that they don't break.
The reason for these patches is that I recently encountered a circular
dependency problem that came about when I produced some patches to
optimise get_order() by rewriting it to use ilog2().
This uses bitops - and on the SH arch asm/bitops.h drags in
asm-generic/get_order.h by a circuituous route involving asm/system.h.
The main difficulty seems to be asm/system.h. It holds a number of
low level bits with no/few dependencies that are commonly used (eg.
memory barriers) and a number of bits with more dependencies that
aren't used in many places (eg. switch_to()).
These patches break asm/system.h up into the following core pieces:
(1) asm/barrier.h
Move memory barriers here. This already done for MIPS and Alpha.
(2) asm/switch_to.h
Move switch_to() and related stuff here.
(3) asm/exec.h
Move arch_align_stack() here. Other process execution related bits
could perhaps go here from asm/processor.h.
(4) asm/cmpxchg.h
Move xchg() and cmpxchg() here as they're full word atomic ops and
frequently used by atomic_xchg() and atomic_cmpxchg().
(5) asm/bug.h
Move die() and related bits.
(6) asm/auxvec.h
Move AT_VECTOR_SIZE_ARCH here.
Other arch headers are created as needed on a per-arch basis."
Fixed up some conflicts from other header file cleanups and moving code
around that has happened in the meantime, so David's testing is somewhat
weakened by that. We'll find out anything that got broken and fix it..

therefore these methods are often untested. It has been seen on
some systems where the execution of these methods causes errors
and also prevents the machine from entering S5. It is therefore
suggested that host operating systems do not execute these methods
by default. In the future, perhaps these methods can be optionally
executed based on the age of the system and/or what is the newest
version of Windows that the BIOS asks for via _OSI.

On Intel CPUs the processor typically uses the highest frequency
set by any logical CPU. When the system overheats
Linux first forces the frequency to the lowest available one
to lower the temperature.
However this was done only per logical CPU, which means all
logical CPUs in a package would need to go through this before
the frequency is actually lowered.
Worse this delay actually prevents real throttling, because
the real throttle code only proceeds when the lowest frequency
is already reached.
So when a throttle event happens force the lowest frequency
for all CPUs in the package where it happened. The per CPU
state is now kept per package, not per logical CPU. An alternative
would be to do it per cpufreq unit, but since we want to bring
down the temperature of the complete chip it's better
to do it for all.
In principle it may even make sense to do it for all CPUs,
but I kept it on the package for now.
With this change the frequency is actually lowered, which
in terms also allows real throttling to proceed.
I also removed an unnecessary per cpu variable initialization.

commit 64b3db22c0 (2.6.39),
"Remove use of unreliable FADT revision field" causes regression
for old P4 systems because now cst_control and other fields are
not reset to 0.
The effect is that acpi_processor_power_init will notice
cst_control != 0 and a write to CST_CNT register is performed
that should not happen. As result, the system oopses after the
"No _CST, giving up" message, sometimes in acpi_ns_internalize_name,
sometimes in acpi_ns_get_type, usually at random places. May be
during migration to CPU 1 in acpi_processor_get_throttling.
Every one of these settings help to avoid this problem:
- acpi=off
- processor.nocst=1
- maxcpus=1
The fix is to update acpi_gbl_FADT.header.length after
the original value is used to check for old revisions.

This patch adds support for RAM to ACPI's mapping capabilities in order

Base ACPI (CA) currently does not support atomic 64-bit reads and writes
(acpi_read() and acpi_write() split 64-bit loads/stores into two
32-bit transfers) yet APEI expects 64-bit transfer capability, even
when running on 32-bit systems.
This patch implements 64-bit read and write routines for APEI usage.
This patch re-factors similar functionality introduced in commit
04c25997c9, bringing it into the ACPI subsystem in preparation for
removing ./drivers/acpi/atomicio.[ch]. In the implementation I have
replicated acpi_os_read_memory() and acpi_os_write_memory(), creating
64-bit versions for APEI to utilize, as opposed to something more
elegant. My thinking is that we should attempt to see if we can get
ACPI's CA/OSL changed so that the existing acpi_read() and acpi_write()
interfaces are natively 64-bit capable and then subsequently remove the
replication.

No functional change.
This is needed because:
When a CPU gets hotplugged, it's totally uninitialized
and offline. cpuinfo_x86 struct (cpu_data(cpu)) is mostly
zero (CPU feature flags, model, family,..).
When a CPU gets hotplugged, struct processor is alloc'd,
some sysfs files are set up but acpi_processor_add()
must not try to access a MSR on this CPU or try to read
out CPU feature,family, etc.
This must be done in acpi_processor_start().
The next patch will delay the call of acpi_processor_start()
for physically hotpluggedcores, to the time when they are onlined
the first time. There it is safe then to access cpu_data(cpu)
cpuinfo_x86 struct or access MSRs which is needed to
set up cpuidle, throttling and other features.

V2: Fix typo: pr->handle -> pr, here: acpi_processor_hotadd_init(pr)
This is a very small part taken from patches which afaik
are coming from Yunhong Jiang (for a Xen not a Linus repo?).
Cleanup only: no functional change.
Advantage (beside cleanup) is that other data of the pr (acpi_processor) struct
in the acpi_processor_hotadd_init() is needed later, for example a newly
introduced flag:
pr->flags.need_hotplug_init

For UP processor, it is likely that no _MAT method or MADT table defined.
So currently acpi_get_cpuid(...) always return -1 for UP processor.
This is wrong. It should return valid value for CPU0.
In the other hand, BIOS may define multiple CPU handles even for UP
processor, for example
Scope (_PR)
{
Processor (CPU0, 0x00, 0x00000410, 0x06) {}
Processor (CPU1, 0x01, 0x00000410, 0x06) {}
Processor (CPU2, 0x02, 0x00000410, 0x06) {}
Processor (CPU3, 0x03, 0x00000410, 0x06) {}
}
We should only return valid value for CPU0's acpi handle.
And return invalid value for others.

APEI needs memory access in interrupt context. The obvious choice is
acpi_read(), but originally it couldn't be used in interrupt context
because it makes temporary mappings with ioremap(). Therefore, we added
drivers/acpi/atomicio.c, which provides:
acpi_pre_map_gar() -- ioremap in process context
acpi_atomic_read() -- memory access in interrupt context
acpi_post_unmap_gar() -- iounmap
Later we added acpi_os_map_generic_address() (2971852) and enhanced
acpi_read() so it works in interrupt context as long as the address has
been previously mapped (620242a). Now this sequence:
acpi_os_map_generic_address() -- ioremap in process context
acpi_read()/apei_read() -- now OK in interrupt context
acpi_os_unmap_generic_address()
is equivalent to what atomicio.c provides.
This patch introduces apei_read() and apei_write(), which currently are
functional equivalents of acpi_read() and acpi_write(). This is mainly
proactive, to prevent APEI breakages if acpi_read() and acpi_write()
are ever augmented to support the 'bit_offset' field of GAS, as APEI's
__apei_exec_write_register() precludes splitting up functionality
related to 'bit_offset' and APEI's 'mask' (see its
APEI_EXEC_PRESERVE_REGISTER block).
With apei_read() and apei_write() in place, usages of atomicio routines
are converted to apei_read()/apei_write() and existing calls within
osl.c and the CA, based on the re-factoring that was done in an earlier
patch series - http://marc.info/?l=linux-acpi&m=128769263327206&w=2:
acpi_pre_map_gar() --> acpi_os_map_generic_address()
acpi_post_unmap_gar() --> acpi_os_unmap_generic_address()
acpi_atomic_read() --> apei_read()
acpi_atomic_write() --> apei_write()
Note that acpi_read() and acpi_write() currently use 'bit_width'
for accessing GARs which seems incorrect. 'bit_width' is the size of
the register, while 'access_width' is the size of the access the
processor must generate on the bus. The 'access_width' may be larger,
for example, if the hardware only supports 32-bit or 64-bit reads. I
wanted to minimize any possible impacts with this patch series so I
did *not* change this behavior.

Export remapping and unmapping interfaces - acpi_os_map_generic_address()
and acpi_os_unmap_generic_address() - for ACPI generic registers that are
backed by memory mapped I/O (MMIO).
The acpi_os_map_generic_address() and acpi_os_unmap_generic_address()
declarations may more properly belong in include/acpi/acpiosxf.h next to
acpi_os_read_memory() but I believe that would require the ACPI CA making
them an official part of the ACPI CA - OS interface.

In SRAT v1, we had 8bit proximity domain (PXM) fields; SRAT v2 provides
32bits for these. The new fields were reserved before.
According to the ACPI spec, the OS must disregrard reserved fields.
In order to know whether or not, we must know what version the SRAT
table has.
This patch stores the SRAT table revision for later consumption
by arch specific __init functions.

Some firmware will access memory in ACPI NVS region via APEI. That
is, instructions in APEI ERST/EINJ table will read/write ACPI NVS
region. The original resource conflict checking in APEI code will
check memory/ioport accessed by APEI via general resource management
mech. But ACPI NVS region is marked as busy already, so that the
false resource conflict will prevent APEI ERST/EINJ to work.
To fix this, this patch excludes ACPI NVS regions when APEI components
request resources. So that they will not conflict with ACPI NVS
regions.

Some APEI firmware implementation will access injected address
specified in param1 to trigger the error when injecting memory error.
This will cause resource conflict with RAM.
On one of our testing machine, if injecting at memory address
0x10000000, the following error will be reported in dmesg:
APEI: Can not request iomem region <0000000010000000-0000000010000008> for GARs.

# echo 0x10000000 > param1
# echo 0xfffffffffffff000 > param2
# echo 0x8 > error_type
# echo 1 > error_inject
Will get:
echo: write error: Input/output error
The EIO comes from:
rc = apei_exec_pre_map_gars(&trigger_ctx);
The root cause is as follow. Normally, ACPI atomic IO support is used
to access IO memory. But in EINJ of that machine, it is used to
access RAM to trigger the injected error. And the ioremap() called by
apei_exec_pre_map_gars() can not map the RAM.
This patch add RAM mapping support to ACPI atomic IO support to
satisfy EINJ requirement.

Because printk is not safe inside NMI handler, the recoverable error
records received in NMI handler will be queued to be printked in a
delayed IRQ context via irq_work. If a fatal error occurs after the
recoverable error and before the irq_work processed, we lost a error
report.
To solve the issue, the queued error records are printked in NMI
handler if system will go panic.

In most cases, printk only guarantees messages from different printk
calling will not be interleaved between each other. But, one APEI
GHES hardware error report will involve multiple printk calling,
normally each for one line. So it is possible that the hardware error
report comes from different generic hardware error source will be
interleaved.
In this patch, a sequence number is prefixed to each line of error
report. So that, even if they are interleaved, they still can be
distinguished by the prefixed sequence number.
