The published errata specify the maximum allowed SPI frequency to be
max 85% of (FSYSCLK/2). So there's no need to track known bad clock
settings in the driver. As the setup of known good values is a bit
tricky, keep them.

CAN-FD frames have only specific frame length (0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 12,
16, 20, 24, 32, 48, 64). A CAN-FD frame provided by user space might not cover
the whole CAN-FD frame. To avoid sending garbage over the CAN bus the driver
pads the CAN frame with 0x0 (if MCP251XFD_SANITIZE_CAN is activated).
This patch cleans up the pad len calculation. Rounding to full u32 brings no
benefit, in case of CRC transfers, the hw_tx_obj->data is not aligned to u32
anyway.

Call skb_tx_timestamp() within can_put_echo_skb() so that a software tx
timestamp gets attached to the skb.
There two main reasons to include this call in can_put_echo_skb():
* It easily allow to enable the tx timestamp on all devices with
just one small change.
* According to Documentation/networking/timestamping.rst, the tx
timestamps should be generated in the device driver as close as possible,
but always prior to passing the packet to the network interface. During the
call to can_put_echo_skb(), the skb gets cloned meaning that the driver
should not dereference the skb variable anymore after can_put_echo_skb()
returns. This makes can_put_echo_skb() the very last place we can use the
skb without having to access the echo_skb[] array.
Remark: by default, skb_tx_timestamp() does nothing. It needs to be activated
by passing the SOF_TIMESTAMPING_TX_SOFTWARE flag either through socket options
or control messages.

The previous patch fixes a TEF vs. TX race condition, by first updating the TEF
tail pointer in hardware, and then updating the driver internal pointer.
The same pattern exists in the RX-path, too. This should be no problem, as the

properly serialized. Fix the order here, too, so that the TEF- and RX-path look
similar.

The mcp251xfd driver uses a TX FIFO for sending CAN frames and a TX Event FIFO
(TEF) for completed TX-requests.
The TEF event handling in the mcp251xfd_handle_tefif() function has a race
condition. It first increments the tx-ring's tail counter to signal that
there's room in the TX and TEF FIFO, then it increments the TEF FIFO in
hardware.
A running mcp251xfd_start_xmit() on a different CPU might not stop the txqueue
(as the tx-ring still shows free space). The next mcp251xfd_start_xmit() will
push a message into the chip and the TX complete event might overflow the TEF
FIFO.

This patch reworks the SPI access and fixes several probems:
- tcan4x5x_regmap_gather_write(), tcan4x5x_regmap_read():
Do not place variable "addr" on stack and use it as buffer for SPI
transfer. Buffers for SPI transfers must be allocated from DMA save
memory.
- tcan4x5x_regmap_gather_write(), tcan4x5x_regmap_read():
Halfe number of SPI transfers by using a single buffer + memcpy().
This improves the performance, especially on SPI controllers, which
use interrupt based transfers.
- Use "8" bits per word, not "32". This makes it possible to use this
driver on SoCs like the Raspberry Pi, which SPI host controller
drivers only support 8 bits per word.
Note: this breaks half duplex only controllers. Support for them will be
re-added in the next patch.

The m_can driver's suspend and resume functions (m_can_class_suspend() and
m_can_class_resume()) make use of dev_get_drvdata() and assume that the drvdata
is a pointer to the struct net_device.
With upcoming conversion of the tcan4x5x driver to pm_runtime this assumption
is no longer valid. As the suspend and resume functions actually need a struct
m_can_classdev pointer, change the m_can_platform and the m_can_pci driver to
hold a pointer to struct m_can_classdev instead, as the tcan4x5x driver already
does.

Add support for M_CAN controller on Intel Elkhart Lake attached to the PCI bus.
It integrates the Bosch M_CAN controller with Message RAM and the wrapper IP

Currently only interrupt control register from wrapper IP is used and the MRAM
configuration is expected to come from the firmware via "bosch,mram-cfg" device
property and parsed by m_can.c core.

This is a preparatory patch for upcoming PCI based M_CAN devices. The current
PM implementation would cause PCI based drivers to enable PM twice, once when
the PCI device is added and a second time in m_can_class_register(). This will
cause 'Unbalanced pm_runtime_enable!' to be logged, and is a situation that
should be avoided.
Therefore, in anticipation of PCI devices, move PM enabling out from M_CAN
class registration to its only user, the m_can_platform driver.

1) c_can_pm_runtime_get_sync() will increase usage counter if device is not

2) c_can_reset_ram() operation will set start bit when enable is true. We

The firmware on the original USB2CAN by Geschwister Schneider Technologie
Entwicklungs- und Vertriebs UG exchanges all data between the host and the
device in host byte order. This is done with the struct
gs_host_config::byte_order member, which is sent first to indicate the desired
byte order.
The widely used open source firmware candleLight doesn't support this feature
and exchanges the data in little endian byte order. This breaks if a device
with candleLight firmware is used on big endianess systems.

I was unable to reproduce the issue, but a cleanup of the flexcan close
sequence has probably fixed the problem at the reporting user.
This patch changes the sequence in flexcan_close() to:
- stop the TX queue
- disable the interrupts on the chip level and wait via free_irq()
synchronously for the interrupt handler to finish
- disable RX offload, which disables synchronously NAPI
- disable the flexcan on the chip level
- free RX offload
- disable the transceiver
- close the CAN device
- disable the clocks

The function flexcan_chip_start() first configures the CAN controller and then
enables the interrupt, flexcan_chip_stop() does the opposite.
In an upcoming patch the order of operations in flexcan_open() and
flexcan_close() are changed. This requires
flexcan_chip_start()/flexcan_chip_stop_disable_on_error() and
flexcan_chip_interrupts_{enable,disable}() to be independent of each other.
This patch moves the enabling of the interrupts from flexcan_chip_start() to
its callers flexcan_open() and flexcan_resume(). Likewise the disabling of the
interrupts is moved from __flexcan_chip_stop() to its indirect callers
flexcan_close() and flexcan_suspend().

The naming of can_dlc as element of struct can_frame and also as variable
name is misleading as it claims to be a 'data length CODE' but in reality
it always was a plain data length.
With the indroduction of a new 'len' element in struct can_frame we can now
remove can_dlc as name and make clear which of the former uses was a plain
length (-> 'len') or a data length code (-> 'dlc') value.

If the CAN controller goes into bus off, the do_set_mode() callback with
CAN_MODE_START can be used to recover the controller, which then calls
flexcan_chip_start(). If configured, this is done automatically by the
framework or manually by the user.
In flexcan_chip_start() there is an explicit call to
flexcan_transceiver_enable(), which does a regulator_enable() on the
transceiver regulator. This results in a net usage counter increase, as there
is no corresponding flexcan_transceiver_disable() in the bus off code path.
This further leads to the transceiver stuck enabled, even if the CAN interface
is shut down.
To fix this problem the
flexcan_transceiver_enable()/flexcan_transceiver_disable() are moved out of
flexcan_chip_start()/flexcan_chip_stop() into flexcan_open()/flexcan_close().

Echo management is driven by PUCAN_MSG_LOOPED_BACK bit, while loopback
frames are identified with PUCAN_MSG_SELF_RECEIVE bit. Those bits are set
for each outgoing frame written to the IP core so that a copy of each one
will be placed into the rx path. Thus,
- when PUCAN_MSG_LOOPED_BACK is set then the rx frame is an echo of a
previously sent frame,
- when PUCAN_MSG_LOOPED_BACK+PUCAN_MSG_SELF_RECEIVE are set, then the rx
frame is an echo AND a loopback frame. Therefore, this frame must be
put into the socket rx path too.
This patch fixes how CAN frames are handled when these are sent while the
can interface is configured in "loopback on" mode.

If a driver calls can_get_echo_skb() during a hardware IRQ (which is often, but
not always, the case), the 'WARN_ON(in_irq)' in
net/core/skbuff.c#skb_release_head_state() might be triggered, under network
congestion circumstances, together with the potential risk of a NULL pointer
dereference.
The root cause of this issue is the call to kfree_skb() instead of
dev_kfree_skb_irq() in net/core/dev.c#enqueue_to_backlog().
This patch prevents the skb to be freed within the call to netif_rx() by
incrementing its reference count with skb_get(). The skb is finally freed by
one of the in-irq-context safe functions: dev_consume_skb_any() or
dev_kfree_skb_any(). The "any" version is used because some drivers might call
can_get_echo_skb() in a normal context.
The reason for this issue to occur is that initially, in the core network
stack, loopback skb were not supposed to be received in hardware IRQ context.
The CAN stack is an exeption.
This bug was previously reported back in 2017 in [1] but the proposed patch
never got accepted.
While [1] directly modifies net/core/dev.c, we try to propose here a
smoother modification local to CAN network stack (the assumption
behind is that only CAN devices are affected by this issue).

In case the rx-offload queue is full, trying to add more skbs results in the
skbs being dropped using kfree_skb(). If done from hard-IRQ context this
results in the following warning:

Since commit:
048e3a34a2 can: flexcan: poll MCR_LPM_ACK instead of GPR ACK for stop mode acknowledgment
the driver polls the IP core's internal bit MCR[LPM_ACK] as stop mode
acknowledge and not the acknowledgment on chip level.
This means the 4th and 5th value of the property "fsl,stop-mode" isn't used
anymore. This patch removes the used "ack_gpr" and "ack_bit" from the driver.

Add an helper function can_bit_time() which returns the duration (in

Rationale for this patch: the sync segment and the bit time are two
concepts which are defined in the CAN ISO standard. Device drivers for
CAN might need those.

0704c57436 can: m_can_platform: remove unnecessary m_can_class_resume() call
removed the m_can_class_resume() call in the runtime resume path to get
rid of a infinite recursion, so the runtime resume now only handles the device
clocks.
Unfortunately it did not remove the complementary m_can_class_suspend() call in
the runtime suspend function, so those paths are now unbalanced, which causes
the pinctrl state to get stuck on the "sleep" state, which breaks all CAN
functionality on SoCs where this state is defined. Remove the
m_can_class_suspend() call to fix this.

One issue was reported at a baremetal environment, which is used for
FPGA verification. "The first transfer will fail for extended ID
format(for both 2.0B and FD format), following frames can be transmitted
and received successfully for extended format, and standard format don't
have this issue. This issue occurred randomly with high possiblity, when
it occurs, the transmitter will detect a BIT1 error, the receiver a CRC
error. According to the spec, a non-correctable error may cause this
transfer failure."
With FLEXCAN_QUIRK_DISABLE_MECR quirk, it supports correctable errors,
disable non-correctable errors interrupt and freeze mode. Platform has
ECC hardware support, but select this quirk, this issue may not come to
light. Initialize all FlexCAN memory before accessing them, at least it
can avoid non-correctable errors detected due to memory uninitialized.
The internal region can't be initialized when the hardware doesn't support
ECC.
According to IMX8MPRM, Rev.C, 04/2020. There is a NOTE at the section
11.8.3.13 Detection and correction of memory errors:
"All FlexCAN memory must be initialized before starting its operation in
order to have the parity bits in memory properly updated. CTRL2[WRMFRZ]
grants write access to all memory positions that require initialization,
ranging from 0x080 to 0xADF and from 0xF28 to 0xFFF when the CAN FD feature
is enabled. The RXMGMASK, RX14MASK, RX15MASK, and RXFGMASK registers need to
be initialized as well. MCR[RFEN] must not be set during memory initialization."
Memory range from 0x080 to 0xADF, there are reserved memory (unimplemented
by hardware, e.g. only configure 64 MBs), these memory can be initialized or not.
In this patch, initialize all flexcan memory which includes reserved memory.
In this patch, create FLEXCAN_QUIRK_SUPPORT_ECC for platforms which has ECC
feature. If you have a ECC platform in your hand, please select this
qurik to initialize all flexcan memory firstly, then you can select
FLEXCAN_QUIRK_DISABLE_MECR to only enable correctable errors.

higher bit rate than the nominal rate used in the arbitration phase when

ISO CAN FD is introduced to increase the failture detection capability
than non-ISO CAN FD. The non-ISO CAN FD is still supported by FlexCAN so
that it can be used mainly during an intermediate phase, for evaluation
and development purposes.
Therefore, it is strongly recommended to configure FlexCAN to the ISO
CAN FD protocol by setting the ISOCANFDEN field in the CTRL2 register.
NOTE: If you only set "fd on", driver will use ISO FD mode by default.
You should set "fd-non-iso on" after setting "fd on" if you want to use
NON ISO FD mode.

On the i.MX7D in LPSR mode, the controller will be powered off and the
configuration state is lost after system resume. Upcoming i.MX8QM/QXP
will also completely power off the domain, the controller state is lost

re-start chip to re-configuration after resume.
For the wakeup case, it should not set pinctrl to sleep state by

commit cdce844865 ("can: flexcan: add vf610 support for FlexCAN")
From above commit by Stefan Agner, the patch just disables
non-correctable errors interrupt and freeze mode. It still can correct
the correctable errors since ECC enabled by default after reset (MECR[ECCDIS]=0,
enable memory error correct) if HW supports ECC.
commit 5e269324db ("can: flexcan: disable completely the ECC mechanism")
From above commit by Joakim Zhang, the patch disables ECC completely (assert
MECR[ECCDIS]) according to the explanation of FLEXCAN_QUIRK_DISABLE_MECR that
disable memory error detection. This cause correctable errors cannot be
corrected even HW supports ECC.
The error correction mechanism ensures that in this 13-bit word, errors
in one bit can be corrected (correctable errors) and errors in two bits can
be detected but not corrected (non-correctable errors). Errors in more than
two bits may not be detected.
If HW supports ECC, we can use this to correct the correctable errors detected
from FlexCAN memory. Then disable non-correctable errors interrupt and freeze
mode to avoid that put FlexCAN in freeze mode.
This patch adds correctable errors correction when HW supports ECC, and
modify explanation for FLEXCAN_QUIRK_DISABLE_MECR.

This patch adds the support of the rx/tx errors CAN counters to the
driver of the PCAN-USB PC-CAN interface from PEAK-System GmbH.
The PCAN-USB is capable of giving back the values of the rx/tx errors
counters, to provide more details and statistics to the linux-can layer.
Getting these values allows the driver to better tune CAN_ERR_CRTL_TX_xxx
and CAN_ERR_CRTL_RX_xxx bits in case of the interface enters any

Drivers using legacy power management .suspen()/.resume() callbacks have to
manage PCI states and device's PM states themselves. They also need to take
care of standard configuration registers.
Switch to generic power management framework using a single "struct dev_pm_ops"
variable to take the unnecessary load from the driver. This also avoids the
need for the driver to directly call most of the PCI helper functions and
device power state control functions, as through the generic framework PCI Core
takes care of the necessary operations, and drivers are required to do only
device-specific jobs.

write_wakeup can happen in parallel with close/hangup where tty->disc_data
is set to NULL and the netdevice is freed thus also freeing
disc_data. write_wakeup accesses disc_data so we must prevent close from
freeing the netdev while write_wakeup has a non-NULL view of
tty->disc_data.
We also need to make sure that accesses to disc_data are atomic. Which can
all be done with RCU.

When suspending, and there is still CAN traffic on the interfaces the
flexcan immediately wakes the platform again. As it should :-). But it
throws this error msg:
[ 3169.378661] PM: noirq suspend of devices failed
On the way down to suspend the interface that throws the error message
calls flexcan_suspend() but fails to call flexcan_noirq_suspend(). That
means flexcan_enter_stop_mode() is called, but on the way out of suspend
the driver only calls flexcan_resume() and skips flexcan_noirq_resume(),
thus it doesn't call flexcan_exit_stop_mode(). This leaves the flexcan
in stop mode, and with the current driver it can't recover from this
even with a soft reboot, it requires a hard reboot.
This patch fixes the deadlock when using self wakeup, by calling
flexcan_exit_stop_mode() from flexcan_resume() instead of
flexcan_noirq_resume().
This also fixes another issue: CAN frames are received out-of-order in
first IRQ handler run after wakeup.
The problem is that the wakeup latency from frame reception to the IRQ
handler (where the CAN frames are sorted by timestamp) is much bigger
than the time stamp counter wrap around time. This means it's
impossible to sort the CAN frames by timestamp.
The reason is that the controller exits stop mode during noirq resume,
which means it receives frames immediately, but interrupt handling is
still not possible.
So exit stop mode during resume stage instead of noirq resume fixes this
issue.

CANFD2.0 core uses BRAM for storing acceptance filter ID(AFID) and MASK
(AFMASK)registers. So by default AFID and AFMASK registers contain random
data. Due to random data, we are not able to receive all CAN ids.
Initializing AFID and AFMASK registers with Zero before enabling
acceptance filter to receive all packets irrespective of ID and Mask.

In the previous patch the function flexcan_write64() was introduced.

The flexcan IP core has up to 64 mailboxes, each one has a corresponding
interrupt bit in the iflag1 or iflag2 registers and a mask bit in the
imask1 or imask2 registers.
The driver will always use the last mailbox for TX, which falls into the iflag2
register.
To support CANFD the payload size has to increase to 64 bytes and the number of
mailboxes will decrease so much that the TX mailbox will be handled in the
iflag1 register.
This patch add support to handle the TX mailbox independent whether it's
in iflag1 or iflag2 by introducing th flexcan_read_reg_iflag_tx()
function, similar to flexcan_read_reg_iflag_rx(), for the read path.
For the write path the function flexcan_write64() is added.

In the timestamp (i.e. non FIFO) mode the driver needs to mask all non RX
interrupt sources, it uses the precomputed value rx_mask of struct flexcan_priv
for this.
In certain use cases, for example the CANFD mode, the contents of the iflag2
register is completely masked.
This patch optimizes the flexcan_read_reg_iflag_rx() function by not reading
the iflag1 or iflag2 register if the contents is masked.

The current driver uses FLEXCAN_IFLAG2_MB() to generate the mask to check for
the TX complete interrupt. This works well, as the driver will always use the

To support CANFD the payload size has to increase to 64 bytes and the
number of mailboxes will decrease so much that the TX mailbox will be
handled in the iflag1 register.
This patch introduces a tx_mask in the struct flexcan_priv (similar to rx_mask)
and makes use of it. The actual support to handle the TX mailbox in iflag1 will
be added in the next patches.

The skbs for classic CAN and CAN FD frames are allocated with seperate
functions: alloc_can_skb() and alloc_canfd_skb().
In order to support CAN FD frames via the rx-offload helper, the driver
itself has to allocate the skb (depending whether it received a classic
CAN or CAN FD frame), as the rx-offload helper cannot know which kind of
CAN frame the driver has received.
This patch moves the allocation of the skb into the struct
can_rx_offload::mailbox_read callbacks of the the flexcan and ti_hecc

Userspace can signal with CAN_CTRLMODE_BERR_REPORTING whether they need
reporting of bus errors (CAN_ERR_BUSERROR) or not.
However, xilinx_can driver currently always sends CAN_ERR_BUSERROR
frames to userspace on bus errors.
To improve performance on error conditions when bus error reporting is
not needed, avoid sending CAN_ERR_BUSERROR frames unless requested via
CAN_CTRLMODE_BERR_REPORTING.
The error interrupt is still kept enabled as there is no dedicated state
transition interrupt, but just disabling error frame submission still
yields a significant performance improvement. In a simple test with
continuous bus errors and no userspace programs reading/writing CAN I
saw system CPU load reduced by 1/3.

The HECC_CANES register handles the flags specially, it only updates
the flags after a one is written to them. Since the interrupt for
frame errors is not enabled an old error can hence been seen when a
state interrupt arrives. For example if the device is not connected
to the CAN-bus the error warning interrupt will have HECC_CANES
indicating there is no ack. The error passive interrupt thereafter
will have HECC_CANES flagging that there is a warning level. And if
thereafter there is a message successfully send HECC_CANES points to
an error passive event, while in reality it became error warning
again. In summary, the state is not always reported correctly.
So handle the state changes and frame errors separately. The state
changes are now based on the interrupt flags and handled directly
when they occur. The reporting of the frame errors is still done as
before, as a side effect of another interrupt.
note: the hecc_clear_bit will do a read, modify, write. So it will
not only clear the bit, but also reset all other bits being set as
a side affect, hence it is replaced with only clearing the flags.
note: The HECC_CANMC_CCR is no longer cleared in the state change
interrupt, it is completely unrelated.

The HECC_CANMIM is set in the xmit path and cleared in the interrupt.
Since this is done with a read, modify, write action the register might
end up with some more MIM enabled then intended, since it is not
protected. That doesn't matter at all, since the tx interrupt disables
the mailbox with HECC_CANME (while holding a spinlock). So lets just
always keep MIM set.
