dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda bs=10k count=1 oflag=direct &

10240 bytes (10 kB, 10 KiB) copied, 10.0135 s, 1.0 kB/s
The problem is that the second bio is finished after 10s instead of 20s.
Root cause:
1) second bio will be flagged:
__blk_throtl_bio
while (true) {
...
if (sq->nr_queued[rw]) -> some bio is throttled already
break
};
bio_set_flag(bio, BIO_THROTTLED); -> flag the bio
2) flagged bio will be dispatched without waiting:
throtl_dispatch_tg
tg_may_dispatch
tg_with_in_bps_limit
if (bps_limit == U64_MAX || bio_flagged(bio, BIO_THROTTLED))
*wait = 0; -> wait time is zero
return true;
commit 9f5ede3c01 ("block: throttle split bio in case of iops limit")
support to count split bios for iops limit, thus it adds flagged bio
checking in tg_with_in_bps_limit() so that split bios will only count
once for bps limit, however, it introduce a new problem that io throttle
won't work if multiple bios are throttled.
In order to fix the problem, handle iops/bps limit in different ways:
1) for iops limit, there is no flag to record if the bio is throttled,
and iops is always applied.
2) for bps limit, original bio will be flagged with BIO_BPS_THROTTLED,
and io throttle will ignore bio with the flag.
Noted this patch also remove the code to set flag in __bio_clone(), it's
introduced in commit 111be88398 ("block-throttle: avoid double
charge"), and author thinks split bio can be resubmited and throttled
again, which is wrong because split bio will continue to dispatch from
caller.

Use the new blk_opf_t type for arguments and variables that represent
request flags or a bitwise combination of a request operation and
request flags. Rename the function arguments and also a structure member
that hold a request operation and flags from 'rw' into 'opf'.

It is unsafe to call folio_next() on a folio unless you hold a reference
on it that prevents it from being split or freed. After returning
from the iterator, iomap calls folio_end_writeback() which may drop
the last reference to the page, or allow the page to be split. If that
happens, the iterator will not advance far enough through the bio_vec,
leading to assertion failures like the BUG() in folio_end_writeback()
that checks we're not trying to end writeback on a page not currently
under writeback. Other assertion failures were also seen, but they're
all explained by this one bug.
Fix the bug by remembering where the next folio starts before returning
from the iterator. There are other ways of fixing this bug, but this
seems the simplest.

__bio_clone_fast should also clone integrity and crypto data, as a clone
without those is incomplete. Right now the only caller that can actually

Replace the blk_poll interface that requires the caller to keep a queue
and cookie from the submissions with polling based on the bio.
Polling for the bio itself leads to a few advantages:
- the cookie construction can made entirely private in blk-mq.c
- the caller does not need to remember the request_queue and cookie
separately and thus sidesteps their lifetime issues
- keeping the device and the cookie inside the bio allows to trivially
support polling BIOs remapping by stacking drivers
- a lot of code to propagate the cookie back up the submission path can
be removed entirely.

Merge tag 'for-5.15-tag' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/kdave/linux
Pull btrfs updates from David Sterba:
"The highlights of this round are integrations with fs-verity and
idmapped mounts, the rest is usual mix of minor improvements, speedups
and cleanups.
There are some patches outside of btrfs, namely updating some VFS
interfaces, all straightforward and acked.
Features:
- fs-verity support, using standard ioctls, backward compatible with
read-only limitation on inodes with previously enabled fs-verity
- idmapped mount support
- make mount with rescue=ibadroots more tolerant to partially damaged
trees
- allow raid0 on a single device and raid10 on two devices,
degenerate cases but might be useful as an intermediate step during
conversion to other profiles
- zoned mode block group auto reclaim can be disabled via sysfs knob
Performance improvements:
- continue readahead of node siblings even if target node is in
memory, could speed up full send (on sample test +11%)
- batching of delayed items can speed up creating many files
- fsync/tree-log speedups
- avoid unnecessary work (gains +2% throughput, -2% run time on
sample load)
- reduced lock contention on renames (on dbench +4% throughput,
up to -30% latency)
Fixes:
- various zoned mode fixes
- preemptive flushing threshold tuning, avoid excessive work on
almost full filesystems
Core:
- continued subpage support, preparation for implementing remaining
features like compression and defragmentation; with some
limitations, write is now enabled on 64K page systems with 4K
sectors, still considered experimental
- no readahead on compressed reads
- inline extents disabled
- disabled raid56 profile conversion and mount
- improved flushing logic, fixing early ENOSPC on some workloads
- inode flags have been internally split to read-only and read-write
incompat bit parts, used by fs-verity
- new tree items for fs-verity
- descriptor item
- Merkle tree item
- inode operations extended to be namespace-aware
- cleanups and refactoring
Generic code changes:
- fs: new export filemap_fdatawrite_wbc
- fs: removed sync_inode
- block: bio_trim argument type fixups
- vfs: add namespace-aware lookup"

fs: add kiocb alloc cache flag
bio: optimize initialization of a bio
Add a per-cpu bio_set cache for bio allocations, enabling us to quickly
recycle them instead of going through the slab allocator. This cache
isn't IRQ safe, and hence is only really suitable for polled IO.
Very simple - keeps a count of bio's in the cache, and maintains a max
of 512 with a slack of 64. If we get above max + slack, we drop slack
number of bio's.

The callers of this function use sector_t type when passing the offset

drivers/md/raid1.c:narrow_write_error().
Change offset and size arguments to sector_t type for bio_trim(). Also,
add WARN_ON_ONCE() to catch their overflow.

The block layer provides emulation of zone management operations
targeting all zones of a zoned block device only for the zone reset
operation (REQ_OP_ZONE_RESET). In order to correctly implement
exporting of zoned block devices with NVMeOF, emulating zone management
operations targeting all zones of a device is also necessary for the
open, close and finish zone operations (REQ_OP_ZONE_OPEN,
REQ_OP_ZONE_CLOSE and REQ_OP_ZONE_FINISH).
Instead of duplicating the code, export the existing helper from block
layer so we can use a bio chaining pattern that is present in the block
layer for REQ_OP_ZONE RESET all emulation in the NVMeOF zoned block
device backend.

After commit 07173c3ec2 ("block: enable multipage bvecs"), a bvec can
have multiple pages. But bio_will_gap() still assumes one page bvec while
checking for merging. If the pages in the bvec go across the
seg_boundary_mask, this check for merging can potentially succeed if only
the 1st page is tested, and can fail if all the pages are tested.
Later, when SCSI builds the SG list the same check for merging is done in
__blk_segment_map_sg_merge() with all the pages in the bvec tested. This
time the check may fail if the pages in bvec go across the
seg_boundary_mask (but tested okay in bio_will_gap() earlier, so those
BIOs were merged). If this check fails, we end up with a broken SG list
for drivers assuming the SG list not having offsets in intermediate pages.
This results in incorrect pages written to the disk.
Fix this by returning the multi-page bvec when testing gaps for merging.

bio size can grow up to 4GB when muli-page bvec is enabled.
but sometimes it would lead to inefficient behaviors.
in case of large chunk direct I/O, - 32MB chunk read in user space -
all pages for 32MB would be merged to a bio structure if the pages
physical addresses are contiguous. it makes some delay to submit
until merge complete. bio max size should be limited to a proper size.
When 32MB chunk read with direct I/O option is coming from userspace,
kernel behavior is below now in do_direct_IO() loop. it's timeline.
| bio merge for 32MB. total 8,192 pages are merged.
| total elapsed time is over 2ms.
|------------------ ... ----------------------->|
| 8,192 pages merged a bio.
| at this time, first bio submit is done.
| 1 bio is split to 32 read request and issue.
|--------------->
|--------------->
|--------------->
......
|--------------->
|--------------->|
total 19ms elapsed to complete 32MB read done from device. |
If bio max size is limited with 1MB, behavior is changed below.
| bio merge for 1MB. 256 pages are merged for each bio.
| total 32 bio will be made.
| total elapsed time is over 2ms. it's same.
| but, first bio submit timing is fast. about 100us.
|--->|--->|--->|---> ... -->|--->|--->|--->|--->|
| 256 pages merged a bio.
| at this time, first bio submit is done.
| and 1 read request is issued for 1 bio.
|--------------->
|--------------->
|--------------->
......
|--------------->
|--------------->|
total 17ms elapsed to complete 32MB read done from device. |
As a result, read request issue timing is faster if bio max size is limited.
Current kernel behavior with multipage bvec, super large bio can be created.
And it lead to delay first I/O request issue.
