This adds a bitbanging parport based adaptor cable for AVR Butterfly, giving
SPI links to its DataFlash chip and (eventually) firmware running in the card.

This includes various updates to the SPI core:
- Fixes a driver model refcount bug in spi_unregister_master() paths.
- The spi_master structures now have wrappers which help keep drivers
from needing class-level get/put for device data or for refcounts.
- Check for a few setup errors that would cause oopsing later.
- Docs say more about memory management. Highlights the use of DMA-safe
i/o buffers, and zero-initializing spi_message and such metadata.
- Provide a simple alloc/free for spi_message and its spi_transfer;
this is only one of the possible memory management policies.
Nothing to break code that already works.

This is a refresh of the "Simple SPI Framework" found in 2.6.15-rc3-mm1
which makes the following changes:
* There's now a "struct spi_driver". This increase the footprint
of the core a bit, since it now includes code to do what the driver
core was previously handling directly. Documentation and comments
were updated to match.
* spi_alloc_master() now does class_device_initialize(), so it can
at least be refcounted before spi_register_master(). To match,
spi_register_master() switched over to class_device_add().
* States explicitly that after transfer errors, spi_devices will be
deselected. We want fault recovery procedures to work the same
for all controller drivers.
* Minor tweaks: controller_data no longer points to readonly data;
prevent some potential cast-from-null bugs with container_of calls;
clarifies some existing kerneldoc,
And a few small cleanups.

This is the core of a small SPI framework, implementing the model of a
queue of messages which complete asynchronously (with thin synchronous
wrappers on top).
- It's still less than 2KB of ".text" (ARM). If there's got to be a
mid-layer for something so simple, that's the right size budget. :)
- The guts use board-specific SPI device tables to build the driver
model tree. (Hardware probing is rarely an option.)
- This version of Kconfig includes no drivers. At this writing there
are two known master controller drivers (PXA/SSP, OMAP MicroWire)
and three protocol drivers (CS8415a, ADS7846, DataFlash) with LKML
mentions of other drivers in development.
- No userspace API. There are several implementations to compare.
Implement them like any other driver, and bind them with sysfs.
The changes from last version posted to LKML (on 11-Nov-2005) are minor,
and include:
- One bugfix (removes a FIXME), with the visible effect of making device
names be "spiB.C" where B is the bus number and C is the chipselect.
- The "caller provides DMA mappings" mechanism now has kerneldoc, for
DMA drivers that want to be fancy.
- Hey, the framework init can be subsys_init. Even though board init
logic fires earlier, at arch_init ... since the framework init is
for driver support, and the board init support uses static init.
- Various additional spec/doc clarifications based on discussions
with other folk. It adds a brief "thank you" at the end, for folk
who've helped nudge this framework into existence.
As I've said before, I think that "protocol tweaking" is the main support
that this driver framework will need to evolve.

This is the latest version of the scheduler cache-hot-auto-tune patch.
The first problem was that detection time scaled with O(N^2), which is
unacceptable on larger SMP and NUMA systems. To solve this:
- I've added a 'domain distance' function, which is used to cache
measurement results. Each distance is only measured once. This means
that e.g. on NUMA distances of 0, 1 and 2 might be measured, on HT
distances 0 and 1, and on SMP distance 0 is measured. The code walks
the domain tree to determine the distance, so it automatically follows
whatever hierarchy an architecture sets up. This cuts down on the boot
time significantly and removes the O(N^2) limit. The only assumption
is that migration costs can be expressed as a function of domain
distance - this covers the overwhelming majority of existing systems,
and is a good guess even for more assymetric systems.
[ People hacking systems that have assymetries that break this
assumption (e.g. different CPU speeds) should experiment a bit with
the cpu_distance() function. Adding a ->migration_distance factor to
the domain structure would be one possible solution - but lets first
see the problem systems, if they exist at all. Lets not overdesign. ]
Another problem was that only a single cache-size was used for measuring
the cost of migration, and most architectures didnt set that variable
up. Furthermore, a single cache-size does not fit NUMA hierarchies with
L3 caches and does not fit HT setups, where different CPUs will often
have different 'effective cache sizes'. To solve this problem:
- Instead of relying on a single cache-size provided by the platform and
sticking to it, the code now auto-detects the 'effective migration
cost' between two measured CPUs, via iterating through a wide range of
cachesizes. The code searches for the maximum migration cost, which
occurs when the working set of the test-workload falls just below the
'effective cache size'. I.e. real-life optimized search is done for
the maximum migration cost, between two real CPUs.
This, amongst other things, has the positive effect hat if e.g. two
CPUs share a L2/L3 cache, a different (and accurate) migration cost
will be found than between two CPUs on the same system that dont share
any caches.
(The reliable measurement of migration costs is tricky - see the source
for details.)
Furthermore i've added various boot-time options to override/tune
migration behavior.
Firstly, there's a blanket override for autodetection:
migration_cost=1000,2000,3000
will override the depth 0/1/2 values with 1msec/2msec/3msec values.
Secondly, there's a global factor that can be used to increase (or
decrease) the autodetected values:
migration_factor=120
will increase the autodetected values by 20%. This option is useful to
tune things in a workload-dependent way - e.g. if a workload is
cache-insensitive then CPU utilization can be maximized by specifying
migration_factor=0.
I've tested the autodetection code quite extensively on x86, on 3
P3/Xeon/2MB, and the autodetected values look pretty good:

Most users don't need it so no need to waste memory.
This means an user has to specify the appropiate number of
hotplug CPUs on the command line with additional_cpus=...
or fix their BIOS to follow the convention in

Here's a tiny patch making a few esthetic changes to

To me this patch makes sense, but feel free to disagree, I don't feel
strongly about it at all.
It changes a single URL to its strictly correct form (directories should
end in /), and it makes the arguments to main in an included example
program follow convention and be named argc and argv.

Various PCI bus errors can be signaled by newer PCI controllers.
Recovering from those errors requires an infrastructure to notify
affected device drivers of the error, and a way of walking through
a reset sequence. This patch adds documentation describing the
current error recovery proposal.

idr gently pointed out today that not only is the sysfs rom file
interface somewhat unintuitive (despite my efforts and initial
implementation), but it's also undocumented! This patch to
Documentation/filesystems/sysfs-pci.txt corrects the latter problem; the
former is a userland ABI now though, so we're stuck with it for awhile
at least.

This is a major update to the cyblafb framebuffer driver. Most
of the stuff has been tested in the mm tree.
Main advantages:

- much faster for almost all modes (e.g. 1280x1024-16bpp
draws more than 41 full screens of text instead of about 25
full screens of text per second on authors Epia 5000)
- module init/exit code fixed

- startup modes suitable for high performance scrolling
in all directions
This diff also contains a lot of white space fixes.
No side effects are possible, only one single graphics core is affected.

- Add support for KWorld DVB-S 100, based on the same chips as Hauppauge
Nova-S Plus (CX23883/CX24123/CX24109), without the Intersil ISL6421,
which is used for LNB control.
- LNB voltage and tone are controled by LNBDC and LNBTone bits from
register 0x29 of the CX24123 demodulator.
- The MO_GP0_IO register from CX23883 is used to turn LNB power on and off.

ifenslave, as of abi version 2, does not set the ip address on the slave
interfaces. The documentation example however still shows that the
ensalved interfaces should have the same IP as the master. The patch
simply removes the lines from the example which should no longer appear.

I couldn't find any docs explaining the contents of /sys/block/<dev>/stat,
so I wrote up the following. I'm not completely sure it's accurate - Jens,
could you give a yea or nay on this?
In particular, the counts of read/write IOs and read/write sectors are
incremented in different places - it looks like they both increment as the
request is being finished, but I'm not completely sure of that.

Make it possible for a running process (such as gssapid) to be able to
instantiate a key, as was requested by Trond Myklebust for NFS4.
The patch makes the following changes:
(1) A new, optional key type method has been added. This permits a key type
to intercept requests at the point /sbin/request-key is about to be
spawned and do something else with them - passing them over the
rpc_pipefs files or netlink sockets for instance.
The uninstantiated key, the authorisation key and the intended operation
name are passed to the method.
(2) The callout_info is no longer passed as an argument to /sbin/request-key
to prevent unauthorised viewing of this data using ps or by looking in
/proc/pid/cmdline.
This means that the old /sbin/request-key program will not work with the
patched kernel as it will expect to see an extra argument that is no
longer there.
A revised keyutils package will be made available tomorrow.
(3) The callout_info is now attached to the authorisation key. Reading this
key will retrieve the information.
(4) A new field has been added to the task_struct. This holds the
authorisation key currently active for a thread. Searches now look here
for the caller's set of keys rather than looking for an auth key in the
lowest level of the session keyring.
This permits a thread to be servicing multiple requests at once and to
switch between them. Note that this is per-thread, not per-process, and
so is usable in multithreaded programs.
The setting of this field is inherited across fork and exec.
(5) A new keyctl function (KEYCTL_ASSUME_AUTHORITY) has been added that
permits a thread to assume the authority to deal with an uninstantiated
key. Assumption is only permitted if the authorisation key associated
with the uninstantiated key is somewhere in the thread's keyrings.
This function can also clear the assumption.
(6) A new magic key specifier has been added to refer to the currently
assumed authorisation key (KEY_SPEC_REQKEY_AUTH_KEY).
(7) Instantiation will only proceed if the appropriate authorisation key is
assumed first. The assumed authorisation key is discarded if
instantiation is successful.
(8) key_validate() is moved from the file of request_key functions to the
file of permissions functions.
(9) The documentation is updated.

Cause any links within a keyring to keys that match a key to be linked into
that keyring to be discarded as a link to the new key is added. The match is
contingent on the type and description strings being the same.
This permits requests, adds and searches to displace negative, expired,
revoked and dead keys easily. After some discussion it was concluded that
duplicate valid keys should probably be discarded also as they would otherwise
hide the new key.
Since request_key() is intended to be the primary method by which keys are
added to a keyring, duplicate valid keys wouldn't be an issue there as that
function would return an existing match in preference to creating a new key.

Add a boolean "memory_migrate" to each cpuset, represented by a file
containing "0" or "1" in each directory below /dev/cpuset.
It defaults to false (file contains "0"). It can be set true by writing
"1" to the file.
If true, then anytime that a task is attached to the cpuset so marked, the
pages of that task will be moved to that cpuset, preserving, to the extent
practical, the cpuset-relative placement of the pages.
Also anytime that a cpuset so marked has its memory placement changed (by
writing to its "mems" file), the tasks in that cpuset will have their pages
moved to the cpusets new nodes, preserving, to the extent practical, the
cpuset-relative placement of the moved pages.

As recently there has been lot of traffic on the right values for batch and
high water marks for per_cpu_pagelists. This patch makes these two
variables configurable through /proc interface.
A new tunable /proc/sys/vm/percpu_pagelist_fraction is added. This entry
controls the fraction of pages at most in each zone that are allocated for
each per cpu page list. The min value for this is 8. It means that we
don't allow more than 1/8th of pages in each zone to be allocated in any
single per_cpu_pagelist.
The batch value of each per cpu pagelist is also updated as a result. It
is set to pcp->high/4. The upper limit of batch is (PAGE_SHIFT * 8)

Add /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches. When written to, this will cause the kernel to
discard as much pagecache and/or reclaimable slab objects as it can. THis
operation requires root permissions.
It won't drop dirty data, so the user should run `sync' first.
Caveats:
a) Holds inode_lock for exorbitant amounts of time.
b) Needs to be taught about NUMA nodes: propagate these all the way through
so the discarding can be controlled on a per-node basis.
This is a debugging feature: useful for getting consistent results between
filesystem benchmarks. We could possibly put it under a config option, but
it's less than 300 bytes.

This is the current version of the spu file system, used
for driving SPEs on the Cell Broadband Engine.
This release is almost identical to the version for the
2.6.14 kernel posted earlier, which is available as part
of the Cell BE Linux distribution from
http://www.bsc.es/projects/deepcomputing/linuxoncell/.
The first patch provides all the interfaces for running
spu application, but does not have any support for
debugging SPU tasks or for scheduling. Both these
functionalities are added in the subsequent patches.

spufs.

This should appease people who complain about a proliferation

If someone changes the uid/gid mapping in userland, then we do eventually
want those changes to be propagated to the kernel. Currently the kernel
assumes that it may cache entries forever.
Add an expiration time + garbage collector for idmap entries.

Make the suspend image size limit tunable via /sys/power/image_size.
It is necessary for systems on which there is a limited amount of swap
available for suspend. It can also be useful for optimizing performance of
swsusp on systems with 1 GB of RAM or more.

Do not limit the usage count of i2c clients to 1. In other words,
change the client usage count behavior from the old I2C_CLIENT_ALLOW_USE
to the old I2C_CLIENT_ALLOW_MULTIPLE_USE. The rationale is that no
driver actually needs the limiting behavior, and the unlimiting
behavior is slightly easier to implement.
Update the documentation to reflect this change.

Just about every i2c chip driver sets the I2C_DF_NOTIFY flag, so we
can simply make it the default and drop the flag. If any driver really
doesn't want to be notified when i2c adapters are added, that driver
can simply omit to set .attach_adapter. This approach is also more
robust as it prevents accidental NULL pointer dereferences.

Unify the EVENT_CARD_INSERTION and "attach" callbacks to one unified
probe() callback. As all in-kernel drivers are changed to this new
callback, there will be no temporary backwards-compatibility. Inside a
probe() function, each driver _must_ set struct pcmcia_device
*p_dev->instance and instance->handle correctly.
With these patches, the basic driver interface for 16-bit PCMCIA drivers
now has the classic four callbacks known also from other buses:

This patch (optionally) does additional checks before accepting IP
fragments, which can greatly reduce the possibility of reassembling

Combined mode sucks. Especially when both libata and the legacy IDE
drivers try to drive ports on the same device, since that makes DMA
rather difficult.
This patch addresses the problem by allowing the user to control which
driver binds to the ports in a combined mode configuration. In many
cases, they'll probably want the libata driver to control both ports
since it can use DMA for talking with ATAPI devices (when
libata.atapi_enabled=1 of course). It also allows the user to get old
school behavior by letting the legacy IDE driver bind to both ports.
But neither is forced, the patch doesn't change current behavior unless
one of combined_mode=ide or combined_mode=libata is passed
on the boot line. Either of those options may require you to access
your devices via different device nodes (/dev/hd* in the ide case
and /dev/sd* in the libata case), though of course if you have udev
installed nicely you may not notice anything. :)
Let me know if the documentation is too cryptic, I'd be happy to expand
on it if necessary. I think most users will want to boot with
'combined_mode=libata' and add 'options libata atapi_enabled=1'
to their modules.conf to get good DVD playing and disk behavior
(haven't tested CD or DVD writing though).
I'd much rather things behave sanely by default (i.e. DMA for devices on
both ports), but apparently that's difficult given the various chip
bugs and hardware configs out there (not to mention that people's
drives may suddenly change from /dev/hdc to /dev/sdb), so this boot
option may be the correct long term fix.

Remove the Audio and Music Data Transmission Protocol driver and the
Connection Management Procedures driver. These are incomplete, have never
worked, and are better implemented in userland via raw1394 (see

Document that the VMALLOC_END address must be aligned to 2MB since
it must align with a PGD boundary.
Allocate the vectors page early so that the flush_cache_all() later
will cause any dirty cache lines in the direct mapping will be safely
written back.
Move the flush_cache_all() to the second local_flush_cache_tlb() and
remove the now redundant first local_flush_cache_tlb().

The 8250 serial driver now has the ability to deal with the differences
between the standard 8250 family of UARTs and their slightly strange
brother on Alchemy SOCs. The loss of features is not considered an
issue.

CONFIG_CHECKING covered some debugging code used in the early times
of the port. But it wasn't even SMP safe for quite some time
and the bugs it checked for seem to be gone.
This patch removes all the code to verify GS at kernel entry. There
haven't been any new bugs in this area for a long time.
Previously it also covered the sysctl for the page fault tracing.
That didn't make much sense because that code was unconditionally
compiled in. I made that a boot option now because it is typically
only useful at boot.

The logging for boot errors was turned off because it was broken
on some AMD systems. But give Intel EM64T systems a chance because they are
supposed to be correct there.
The advantage is that there is a chance to actually log uncorrected
machine checks after the reset.

With a NR_CPUS==128 kernel with CPU hotplug enabled we would waste 4MB
on per CPU data of all possible CPUs. The reason was that HOTPLUG
always set up possible map to NR_CPUS cpus and then we need to allocate
that much (each per CPU data is roughly ~32k now)
The underlying problem is that ACPI didn't tell us how many hotplug CPUs
the platform supports. So the old code just assumed all, which would
lead to this memory wastage.
This implements some new heuristics:
- If the BIOS specified disabled CPUs in the ACPI/mptables assume they
can be enabled later (this is bending the ACPI specification a bit,
but seems like a obvious extension)
- The user can overwrite it with a new additionals_cpus=NUM option
- Otherwise use half of the available CPUs or 2, whatever is more.

This is an updated version of the RFC3465 ABC patch originally
for Linux 2.6.11-rc4 by Yee-Ting Li. ABC is a way of counting
bytes ack'd rather than packets when updating congestion control.
The orignal ABC described in the RFC applied to a Reno style
algorithm. For advanced congestion control there is little
change after leaving slow start.

Make some changes to the NEED_RESCHED and POLLING_NRFLAG to reduce
confusion, and make their semantics rigid. Improves efficiency of
resched_task and some cpu_idle routines.
* In resched_task:
- TIF_NEED_RESCHED is only cleared with the task's runqueue lock held,
and as we hold it during resched_task, then there is no need for an
atomic test and set there. The only other time this should be set is
when the task's quantum expires, in the timer interrupt - this is
protected against because the rq lock is irq-safe.
- If TIF_NEED_RESCHED is set, then we don't need to do anything. It
won't get unset until the task get's schedule()d off.
- If we are running on the same CPU as the task we resched, then set
TIF_NEED_RESCHED and no further action is required.
- If we are running on another CPU, and TIF_POLLING_NRFLAG is *not* set
after TIF_NEED_RESCHED has been set, then we need to send an IPI.
Using these rules, we are able to remove the test and set operation in
resched_task, and make clear the previously vague semantics of
POLLING_NRFLAG.
* In idle routines:
- Enter cpu_idle with preempt disabled. When the need_resched() condition
becomes true, explicitly call schedule(). This makes things a bit clearer
(IMO), but haven't updated all architectures yet.
- Many do a test and clear of TIF_NEED_RESCHED for some reason. According
to the resched_task rules, this isn't needed (and actually breaks the
assumption that TIF_NEED_RESCHED is only cleared with the runqueue lock
held). So remove that. Generally one less locked memory op when switching
to the idle thread.
- Many idle routines clear TIF_POLLING_NRFLAG, and only set it in the inner
most polling idle loops. The above resched_task semantics allow it to be
set until before the last time need_resched() is checked before going into
a halt requiring interrupt wakeup.
Many idle routines simply never enter such a halt, and so POLLING_NRFLAG
can be always left set, completely eliminating resched IPIs when rescheduling
the idle task.
POLLING_NRFLAG width can be increased, to reduce the chance of resched IPIs.

- Updated documentation for FusionHDTV Lite cards. We must differentiate
the bt8xx based "Lite" cards from the cx2388x based "Gold" cards.
- Provide location of CARDLIST.bttv Documentation, rather than
instructing users to look at bttv.h
- Include card decimal id numbers. These are valid for module arguments,
and might be easier for some people to remember, rather than hex.

->permission and ->lookup have a struct nameidata * argument these days to
pass down lookup intents. Unfortunately some callers of lookup_hash don't
actually pass this one down. For lookup_one_len() we don't have a struct
nameidata to pass down, but as this function is a library function only
used by filesystem code this is an acceptable limitation. All other
callers should pass down the nameidata, so this patch changes the
lookup_hash interface to only take a struct nameidata argument and derives
the other two arguments to __lookup_hash from it. All callers already have
the nameidata argument available so this is not a problem.
At the same time I'd like to deprecate the lookup_hash interface as there
are better exported interfaces for filesystem usage. Before it can
actually be removed I need to fix up rpc_pipefs.

The big i2c-viapro SMBus driver update which went into 2.6.14-git1
introduced a few minor issues. Nothing critical, but I would like a
few adjustments to be merged in to fix the following problems:
* VIA should not be spelled Via.
* Frodo Looijaard and Philip Edelbrock did not write the i2c-viapro
driver.
* When debugging is disabled, half of messages would be logged.
* Drop an unneeded masking.
* Some port reads can be avoided now that the transaction size is
passed as a parameter to vt596_transaction().
* SMBus Receive Byte transactions are used for probing too (for
EEPROMs), so hide errors on these too.

vesafb occassionally gets the size wrong when setting the mtrr. When X or DRI
attempts to set the mtrr, it will fail due to range overlap significantly
affecting their performance. Disable mtrr and let the user explicitly enable
it with the mtrr:n option.

Adds a RapidIO subsystem to the kernel. RIO is a switched fabric interconnect
used in higher-end embedded applications. The curious can look at the specs
over at http://www.rapidio.org
The core code implements enumeration/discovery, management of
devices/resources, and interfaces for RIO drivers.
There's a lot more to do to take advantages of all the hardware features.
However, this should provide a good base for folks with RIO hardware to start
contributing.

Remove snd_runtime_check() macro.
This macro worsens the readability of codes. They should be either
normal if() or removable asserts.

I recently picked up my older work to remove unnecessary #includes of
sched.h, starting from a patch by Dave Jones to not include sched.h
from module.h. This reduces the number of indirect includes of sched.h
by ~300. Another ~400 pointless direct includes can be removed after
this disentangling (patch to follow later).
However, quite a few indirect includes need to be fixed up for this.
In order to feed the patches through -mm with as little disturbance as
possible, I've split out the fixes I accumulated up to now (complete for
i386 and x86_64, more archs to follow later) and post them before the real
patch. This way this large part of the patch is kept simple with only
adding #includes, and all hunks are independent of each other. So if any
hunk rejects or gets in the way of other patches, just drop it. My scripts
will pick it up again in the next round.

This patch is a rewrite of the one submitted on October 1st, using modules
(http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=linux-kernel&m=112819093522998&w=2).
This rewrite adds a tristate CONFIG_RCU_TORTURE_TEST, which enables an
intense torture test of the RCU infratructure. This is needed due to the
continued changes to the RCU infrastructure to accommodate dynamic ticks,
CPU hotplug, realtime, and so on. Most of the code is in a separate file
that is compiled only if the CONFIG variable is set. Documentation on how
to run the test and interpret the output is also included.
This code has been tested on i386 and ppc64, and an earlier version of the
code has received extensive testing on a number of architectures as part of
the PREEMPT_RT patchset.

The attached patch adds LSM hooks for key management facilities. The notable
changes are:
(1) The key struct now supports a security pointer for the use of security
modules. This will permit key labelling and restrictions on which
programs may access a key.
(2) Security modules get a chance to note (or abort) the allocation of a key.
(3) The key permission checking can now be enhanced by the security modules;
the permissions check consults LSM if all other checks bear out.
(4) The key permissions checking functions now return an error code rather
than a boolean value.
(5) An extra permission has been added to govern the modification of
attributes (UID, GID, permissions).
Note that there isn't an LSM hook specifically for each keyctl() operation,
but rather the permissions hook allows control of individual operations based
on the permission request bits.
Key management access control through LSM is enabled by automatically if both
CONFIG_KEYS and CONFIG_SECURITY are enabled.

There was one small but very significant change in the previous patch:
mprotect's flush_tlb_range fell outside the page_table_lock: as it is in 2.4,
but that doesn't prove it safe in 2.6.
On some architectures flush_tlb_range comes to the same as flush_tlb_mm, which
has always been called from outside page_table_lock in dup_mmap, and is so
proved safe. Others required a deeper audit: I could find no reliance on
page_table_lock in any; but in ia64 and parisc found some code which looks a
bit as if it might want preemption disabled. That won't do any actual harm,
so pending a decision from the maintainers, disable preemption there.
Remove comments on page_table_lock from flush_tlb_mm, flush_tlb_range and
flush_tlb_page entries in cachetlb.txt: they were rather misleading (what
generic code does is different from what usually happens), the rules are now
changing, and it's not yet clear where we'll end up (will the generic
tlb_flush_mmu happen always under lock? never under lock? or sometimes under
and sometimes not?).

Please, please now delete the Atari CONFIG_STRAM_SWAP code. It may be
excellent and ingenious code, but its reference to swap_vfsmnt betrays that it
hasn't been built since 2.5.1 (four years old come December), it's delving
deep into matters which are the preserve of core mm code, its only purpose is
to give the more conscientious mm guys an anxiety attack from time to time;
yet we keep on breaking it more and more.
If you want to use RAM for swap, then if the MTD driver does not already
provide just what you need, I'm sure David could be persuaded to add the
extra. But you'd also like to be able to allocate extents of that swap for
other use: we can give you a core interface for that if you need. But unbuilt
for four years suggests to me that there's no need at all.
I cannot swear the patch below won't break your build, but believe so.

This revised patch (as586b) makes usb-handoff permanently true and no
longer a kernel boot parameter. It also removes the piix3_usb quirk code;
that was nothing more than an early version of the USB handoff code
(written at a time when Intel's PIIX3 was about the only motherboard with
USB support). And it adds identifiers for the three PCI USB controller
classes to pci_ids.h.

Add PEC support to the lm90 driver. Only the ADM1032 chip supports it,
and in a rather tricky way, which is why this patch comes with
documentation reinforcements. At least, this demonstrates that the new
PEC support logic in i2c-core can properly deal with chips with partial
PEC support.
As enabling PEC causes a significant performance drop, it can be
disabled through a sysfs file (unsurprisingly named "pec").

Drop legacy ISA address support from the it87 driver. All supported
chips are Super-I/O chips, so the device ISA address can be safely read
from Super-I/O space rather than blindly assumed.
Two nearby inaccurate documentation statements have been fixed as well:

* The SiS950 doesn't have a distinct prefix.

Implement the I2C block transactions on VIA chips which support them:
VT82C686B, VT8233, VT8233A, VT8235 and VT8237R. This speeds up EEPROM
accesses by a factor 10 or so.

Do not enable the VIA VT82C686A/B integrated sensors by default, as
disabled sensors usually means that this feature is not used so the
values won't make any sense. This has been confusing many users in the

In PM v1, all devices were called at SUSPEND_DISABLE level. Then
all devices were called at SUSPEND_SAVE_STATE level, and finally
SUSPEND_POWER_DOWN level. However, with PM v2, to maintain
compatibility for platform devices, I arranged for the PM v2
suspend/resume callbacks to call the old PM v1 suspend/resume
callbacks three times with each level in order so that existing
drivers continued to work.
Since this is obsolete infrastructure which is no longer necessary,
we can remove it. Here's an (untested) patch to do exactly that.

In the current dell_rbu code ver 2.0 the packet update mechanism makes the
user app dump every individual packet in to the driver.
This adds in efficiency as every packet update makes the
/sys/class/firmware/dell_rbu/loading and data files to disappear and reappear
again. Thus the user app needs to wait for the files to reappear to dump
another packet. This slows down the packet update tremendously in case of
large number of packets. I am submitting a new patch for dell_rbu which will
change the way we do packet updates;
In the new method the user app will create a new single file which has already
packetized the rbu image and all the packets are now staged in this file.
This driver also creates a new entry in
/sys/devices/platform/dell_rbu/packet_size ; the user needs to echo the packet
size here before downloading the packet file.
The user should do the following:
create one single file which has all the packets stacked together.
echo the packet size in to /sys/devices/platform/dell_rbu/packet_size.
echo 1 > /sys/class/firmware/dell_rbu/loading
cat the packetfile > /sys/class/firmware/dell_rbu/data
echo 0 > /sys/class/firmware/dell_rbu/loading
The driver takes the file which came through /sys/class/firmware/dell_rbu/data
and takes chunks of paket_size data from it and place in contiguous memory.
This makes packet update process very efficient and fast. As all the packet
update happens in one single operation. The user can still read back the
downloaded file from /sys/devices/platform/dell_rbu/data.

file operations ->write(), ->aio_write(), and ->writev() for regular
files. This replaces the old use of generic_file_write(), et al and
the address space operations ->prepare_write and ->commit_write.
This means that both sparse and non-sparse (unencrypted and
uncompressed) files can now be extended using the normal write(2)
code path. There are two limitations at present and these are that
we never create sparse files and that we only have limited support
for highly fragmented files, i.e. ones whose data attribute is split
across multiple extents. When such a case is encountered,
EOPNOTSUPP is returned.

The attached patch adds extra permission grants to keys for the possessor of a
key in addition to the owner, group and other permissions bits. This makes
SUID binaries easier to support without going as far as labelling keys and key
targets using the LSM facilities.
This patch adds a second "pointer type" to key structures (struct key_ref *)
that can have the bottom bit of the address set to indicate the possession of
a key. This is propagated through searches from the keyring to the discovered
key. It has been made a separate type so that the compiler can spot attempts
to dereference a potentially incorrect pointer.
The "possession" attribute can't be attached to a key structure directly as
it's not an intrinsic property of a key.
Pointers to keys have been replaced with struct key_ref *'s wherever
possession information needs to be passed through.
This does assume that the bottom bit of the pointer will always be zero on
return from kmem_cache_alloc().
The key reference type has been made into a typedef so that at least it can be
located in the sources, even though it's basically a pointer to an undefined
type. I've also renamed the accessor functions to be more useful, and all
reference variables should now end in "_ref".

BUG fixes:
The driver used to allocate memory with spinlock held which has been
fixed in this patch.
The driver was printing the entire buffer when it received a invalid
entry in image_type. The fix is to only print a warning message and not
the buffer.
Usability enhancements:
It is possible that due to user error the /sys/class/firmware/dell_rbu
entries might be missing, this can happen if the user does the following
echo 1 > /sys/class/firmware/dell_rbu/loading
echo 0 > /sys/class/firmware/dell_rbu/loading
This will make the entries in /sys/class/firmware/ to disappear and the
only way get them back was bby unloading and loading the driver.
This patch makes the user recreate these entries by echoing init in to
image_type.
This patch has been tested with Libsmbios and Dell OpenManage.

This patch adds new PCI and subsystem ID's that finally made the spec. It
also include a name change for one controller. I know there's a lot of
duplicat names but the fw folks wanted this for the different implementations.
Even though the same ASIC is used it may be embedded on some platforms,
standup card in others, and a mezzanine in other servers.

This is a driver for the USB touchpad which can be found on post-February 2005
Apple PowerBooks.
This driver is derived from Johannes Berg's appletrackpad driver [1],
but it has been improved in some areas:
* appletouch is a full kernel driver, no userspace program is necessary
* appletouch can be interfaced with the synaptics X11 driver[2], in order
to have touchpad acceleration, scrolling, two/three finger tap, etc.
This driver has been tested by the readers of the 'debian-powerpc' mailing
list for a few weeks now and I believe it is now ready for inclusion into the
mainline kernel.
Credits go to Johannes Berg for reverse-engineering the touchpad protocol,
Frank Arnold for further improvements, and Alex Harper for some additional
information about the inner workings of the touchpad sensors.

Kernel connector - new userspace <-> kernel space easy to use
communication module which implements easy to use bidirectional
message bus using netlink as it's backend. Connector was created to
eliminate complex skb handling both in send and receive message bus
direction.
Connector driver adds possibility to connect various agents using as
one of it's backends netlink based network. One must register
callback and identifier. When driver receives special netlink message
with appropriate identifier, appropriate callback will be called.
From the userspace point of view it's quite straightforward:
socket();
bind();
send();
recv();
But if kernelspace want to use full power of such connections, driver
writer must create special sockets, must know about struct sk_buff
handling... Connector allows any kernelspace agents to use netlink
based networking for inter-process communication in a significantly
easier way:

When introducing the generic asm-offsets.h support the dependency
chain for the prepare targets was changed. All build scripts expecting
include/asm/asm-offsets.h to be made when using the prepare target would broke.
With the limited number of prepare targets left in arch Makefiles
the trivial solution was to introduce a new arch specific target: archprepare
The dependency chain looks like this now:

+--> prepare1

+--> prepare3
So prepare 3 is processed before prepare2 etc.
This guaantees that the asm symlink, version.h, scripts_basic
are all updated before archprepare is processed.
prepare0 which build the asm-offsets.h file will need the
actions performed by archprepare.
The head target is now named prepare, because users scripts will most
likely use that target, but prepare-all has been kept for compatibility.

Update the hacking guide, before CONFIG_PREEMPT_RT goes in and it needs
rewriting again.
Changes include modernization of quotes, removal of most references to
bottom halves (some mention required because we still use bh in places to
mean softirq).
It would be nice to have a discussion of sparse and various annotations.

The Coordinated Video Timings (CVT) is the latest standard approved by VESA
concerning video timings generation. It addresses the limitation of GTF which
is designed mainly for CRT displays. CRT's have a high blanking requirement
(as much as 25% of the horizontal frame length) which artificially increases
the pixelclock. Digital displays, on the other hand, needs to conserve the
pixelclock as much as possible. The GTF also does not take into account the
different aspect ratios in its calculation.
The new function added is fb_find_mode_cvt(). It is called by fb_find_mode()
if it recognizes a mode option string formatted for CVT. The format is:
<xres>x<yres>[M][R][-<bpp>][<at-sign><refresh>][i][m]
The 'M' tells the function to calculate using CVT. On it's own, it will
compute a timing for CRT displays at 60Hz. If the 'R' is specified, 'reduced
blanking' computation will be used, best for flatpanels. The 'i' and the 'm'
is for 'interlaced mode' and 'with margins' respectively.
To determine if CVT was used, check for dmesg for something like this:
CVT Mode - <pix>M<n>[-R], ie: .480M3-R (800x600 reduced blanking)
where: pix - product of xres and yres, in MB
M - is a CVT mode
n - the aspect ratio (3 - 4:3; 4 - 5:4; 9 - 16:9, 15:9; A - 16:10)
-R - reduced blanking

This is a framebuffer driver for the Cyberblade/i1 graphics core.
Currently tridenfb claims to support the cyberblade/i1 graphics core. This
is of very limited truth. Even vesafb is faster and provides more working
modes and a much better quality of the video signal. There is a great
number of bugs in tridentfb ... but most often it is impossible to decide
if these bugs are real bugs or if fixing them for the cyberblade/i1 core
would break support for one of the other supported chips.
Tridentfb seems to be unmaintained,and documentation for most of the
supported chips is not available. So "fixing" cyberblade/i1 support inside
of tridentfb was not an option, it would have caused numerous
if(CYBERBLADEi1) else ... cases and would have rendered the code to be
almost unmaintainable.
A first version of this driver was published on 2005-07-31. A fix for a
bug reported by Jochen Hein was integrated as well as some changes
requested by Antonino A. Daplas.
A message has been added to tridentfb to inform current users of tridentfb
to switch to cyblafb if the cyberblade/i1 graphics core is detected.
This patch is one logical change, but because of the included documentation
it is bigger than 70kb. Therefore it is not sent to lkml and
linux-fbdev-devel,

OVERVIEW
V9FS is a distributed file system for Linux which provides an
implementation of the Plan 9 resource sharing protocol 9P. It can be
used to share all sorts of resources: static files, synthetic file servers
(such as /proc or /sys), devices, and application file servers (such as
FUSE).
BACKGROUND
Plan 9 (http://plan9.bell-labs.com/plan9) is a research operating
system and associated applications suite developed by the Computing
Science Research Center of AT&T Bell Laboratories (now a part of
Lucent Technologies), the same group that developed UNIX , C, and C++.
Plan 9 was initially released in 1993 to universities, and then made
generally available in 1995. Its core operating systems code laid the
foundation for the Inferno Operating System released as a product by
Lucent Bell-Labs in 1997. The Inferno venture was the only commercial
embodiment of Plan 9 and is currently maintained as a product by Vita
Nuova (http://www.vitanuova.com). After updated releases in 2000 and
2002, Plan 9 was open-sourced under the OSI approved Lucent Public
License in 2003.
The Plan 9 project was started by Ken Thompson and Rob Pike in 1985.
Their intent was to explore potential solutions to some of the
shortcomings of UNIX in the face of the widespread use of high-speed
networks to connect machines. In UNIX, networking was an afterthought
and UNIX clusters became little more than a network of stand-alone
systems. Plan 9 was designed from first principles as a seamless
distributed system with integrated secure network resource sharing.
Applications and services were architected in such a way as to allow
for implicit distribution across a cluster of systems. Configuring an
environment to use remote application components or services in place
of their local equivalent could be achieved with a few simple command
line instructions. For the most part, application implementations
operated independent of the location of their actual resources.
Commercial operating systems haven't changed much in the 20 years
since Plan 9 was conceived. Network and distributed systems support is
provided by a patchwork of middle-ware, with an endless number of
packages supplying pieces of the puzzle. Matters are complicated by
the use of different complicated protocols for individual services,
and separate implementations for kernel and application resources.
The V9FS project (http://v9fs.sourceforge.net) is an attempt to bring
Plan 9's unified approach to resource sharing to Linux and other
operating systems via support for the 9P2000 resource sharing
protocol.
V9FS HISTORY
V9FS was originally developed by Ron Minnich and Maya Gokhale at Los
Alamos National Labs (LANL) in 1997. In November of 2001, Greg Watson
setup a SourceForge project as a public repository for the code which
supported the Linux 2.4 kernel.
About a year ago, I picked up the initial attempt Ron Minnich had
made to provide 2.6 support and got the code integrated into a 2.6.5
kernel. I then went through a line-for-line re-write attempting to
clean-up the code while more closely following the Linux Kernel style
guidelines. I co-authored a paper with Ron Minnich on the V9FS Linux
support including performance comparisons to NFSv3 using Bonnie and
PostMark - this paper appeared at the USENIX/FREENIX 2005
conference in April 2005:

CALL FOR PARTICIPATION/REQUEST FOR COMMENTS
Our 2.6 kernel support is stabilizing and we'd like to begin pursuing
its integration into the official kernel tree. We would appreciate any
review, comments, critiques, and additions from this community and are
actively seeking people to join our project and help us produce
something that would be acceptable and useful to the Linux community.
STATUS
The code is reasonably stable, although there are no doubt corner cases
our regression tests haven't discovered yet. It is in regular use by several
of the developers and has been tested on x86 and PowerPC
(32-bit and 64-bit) in both small and large (LANL cluster) deployments.
Our current regression tests include fsx, bonnie, and postmark.
It was our intention to keep things as simple as possible for this
release -- trying to focus on correctness within the core of the
protocol support versus a rich set of features. For example: a more
complete security model and cache layer are in the road map, but
excluded from this release. Additionally, we have removed support for
mmap operations at Al Viro's request.
PERFORMANCE
Detailed performance numbers and analysis are included in the FREENIX
paper, but we show comparable performance to NFSv3 for large file
operations based on the Bonnie benchmark, and superior performance for
many small file operations based on the PostMark benchmark. Somewhat
preliminary graphs (from the FREENIX paper) are available

The IPMI power control function proc_write_chassctrl was badly written, it
directly used userspace pointers, it assumed that strings were NULL
terminated, and it used the evil sscanf function. This converts over to
using the sysctl interface for this data and changes the semantics to be a
little more logical.

This patch makes use of the previously underutilized cpuset flag
'mem_exclusive' to provide what amounts to another layer of memory placement
resolution. With this patch, there are now the following four layers of
memory placement available:
1) The whole system (interrupt and GFP_ATOMIC allocations can use this),
2) The nearest enclosing mem_exclusive cpuset (GFP_KERNEL allocations can use),
3) The current tasks cpuset (GFP_USER allocations constrained to here), and
4) Specific node placement, using mbind and set_mempolicy.
These nest - each layer is a subset (same or within) of the previous.
Layer (2) above is new, with this patch. The call used to check whether a
zone (its node, actually) is in a cpuset (in its mems_allowed, actually) is
extended to take a gfp_mask argument, and its logic is extended, in the case
that __GFP_HARDWALL is not set in the flag bits, to look up the cpuset
hierarchy for the nearest enclosing mem_exclusive cpuset, to determine if
placement is allowed. The definition of GFP_USER, which used to be identical
to GFP_KERNEL, is changed to also set the __GFP_HARDWALL bit, in the previous
cpuset_gfp_hardwall_flag patch.
GFP_ATOMIC and GFP_KERNEL allocations will stay within the current tasks
cpuset, so long as any node therein is not too tight on memory, but will
escape to the larger layer, if need be.
The intended use is to allow something like a batch manager to handle several
jobs, each job in its own cpuset, but using common kernel memory for caches
and such. Swapper and oom_kill activity is also constrained to Layer (2). A
task in or below one mem_exclusive cpuset should not cause swapping on nodes
in another non-overlapping mem_exclusive cpuset, nor provoke oom_killing of a
task in another such cpuset. Heavy use of kernel memory for i/o caching and
such by one job should not impact the memory available to jobs in other
non-overlapping mem_exclusive cpusets.
This patch enables providing hardwall, inescapable cpusets for memory
allocations of each job, while sharing kernel memory allocations between
several jobs, in an enclosing mem_exclusive cpuset.
Like Dinakar's patch earlier to enable administering sched domains using the
cpu_exclusive flag, this patch also provides a useful meaning to a cpuset flag
that had previously done nothing much useful other than restrict what cpuset
configurations were allowed.

Since early userspace was added, there's no way to override which init to
run from it. Some people tack on an extra cpio archive with a link from
/init depending on what they want to run, but that's sometimes impractical.
Changing the "init=" to also override the early userspace isn't feasible,
since it is still used to indicate what init to run from disk when early
userspace has completed doing whatever it's doing (i.e. load filesystem
modules and drivers).
Instead, introduce "rdinit=" and make it override the default "/init" if
specified.

Newer Sony VAIO models (VGN-S480, VGN-S460, VGN-S3XP etc) use a new method to
initialize the SPIC device. The new way to initialize (and disable) the
device comes directly from the AML code in the _CRS, _SRS and _DIS methods
from the DSDT table. This patch adds support for the new models.

Uses of RCU for dynamically changeable NMI handlers need to use the new
rcu_dereference() and rcu_assign_pointer() facilities. This change makes
it clear that these uses are safe from a memory-barrier viewpoint, but the
main purpose is to document exactly what operations are being protected by
RCU. This has been tested on x86 and x86-64, which are the only
architectures affected by this change.

Here's the latest version of relayfs, against linux-2.6.11-mm2. I'm hoping
you'll consider putting this version back into your tree - the previous
rounds of comment seem to have shaken out all the API issues and the number
of comments on the code itself have also steadily dwindled.
This patch is essentially the same as the relayfs redux part 5 patch, with
some minor changes based on reviewer comments. Thanks again to Pekka
Enberg for those. The patch size without documentation is now a little
smaller at just over 40k. Here's a detailed list of the changes:
- removed the attribute_flags in relay open and changed it to a
boolean specifying either overwrite or no-overwrite mode, and removed
everything referencing the attribute flags.
- added a check for NULL names in relayfs_create_entry()
- got rid of the unnecessary multiple labels in relay_create_buf()
- some minor simplification of relay_alloc_buf() which got rid of a
couple params
- updated the Documentation
In addition, this version (through code contained in the relay-apps tarball
linked to below, not as part of the relayfs patch) tries to make it as easy
as possible to create the cooperating kernel/user pieces of a typical and
common type of logging application, one where kernel logging is kicked off
when a user space data collection app starts and stops when the collection
app exits, with the data being automatically logged to disk in between. To
create this type of application, you basically just include a header file
(relay-app.h, included in the relay-apps tarball) in your kernel module,
define a couple of callbacks and call an initialization function, and on
the user side call a single function that sets up and continuously monitors
the buffers, and writes data to files as it becomes available. Channels
are created when the collection app is started and destroyed when it exits,
not when the kernel module is inserted, so different channel buffer sizes
can be specified for each separate run via command-line options. See the
README in the relay-apps tarball for details.
Also included in the relay-apps tarball are a couple examples
demonstrating how you can use this to create quick and dirty kernel
logging/debugging applications. They are:
- tprintk, short for 'tee printk', which temporarily puts a kprobe on
printk() and writes a duplicate stream of printk output to a relayfs
channel. This could be used anywhere there's printk() debugging code
in the kernel which you'd like to exercise, but would rather not have
your system logs cluttered with debugging junk. You'd probably want
to kill klogd while you do this, otherwise there wouldn't be much
point (since putting a kprobe on printk() doesn't change the output
of printk()). I've used this method to temporarily divert the packet
logging output of the iptables LOG target from the system logs to
relayfs files instead, for instance.
- klog, which just provides a printk-like formatted logging function
on top of relayfs. Again, you can use this to keep stuff out of your
system logs if used in place of printk.

The 24RF08 corruption would better be prevented at i2c-core level than
at chip driver level, for several reasons:
* The second quick write should happen as soon as possible after the
first one, so as to limit the risk that another command is issued on
the bus inbetween, causing the corruption.
* As a matter of fact, the protection code at driver level was reworked
at least three times already, which proves how hard it is to get it
right there, while it's straightforward at i2c-core level.
* It's easy to add a new driver that would need the protection, and
forget to add it. This did happen already.
* As additional probing addresses can be passed to most i2c chip drivers
as module parameters, virtually every i2c chip driver would need the
protection if we want to be really safe.
* Why duplicate code when we can easily avoid it?

i2c_probe was quite complex and slow, so I rewrote it in a more
efficient and hopefully clearer way.
Note that this slightly changes the way the module parameters are
handled. This shouldn't change anything for the most common cases
though.
For one thing, the function now respects the order of the parameters
for address probing. It used to always do lower addresses first. The
new approach gives the user more control.
For another, ignore addresses don't overrule probe addresses anymore.
This could have been restored the way it was at the cost of a few more
lines of code, but I don't think it's worth it. Both lists are given
as module parameters, so a user would be quite silly to specify the
same addresses in both lists. The normal addresses list is the only
one that isn't controlled by a module parameter, thus is the only one
the user may reasonably want to remove an address from.
Another significant change is the fact that i2c_probe() will no more
stop when a detection function returns -ENODEV. Just because a driver
found a chip it doesn't support isn't a valid reason to stop all
probings for this one driver. This closes the long standing lm_sensors
ticket #1807.

I updated the documentation accordingly.
In terms of algorithmic complexity, the new code is way better. If
I is the ignore address count, P the probe address count, N the
normal address count and F the force address count, the old code
was doing 128 * (F + I + P + N) iterations max, while the new code
does F + P + ((I+1) * N) iterations max. For the most common case
where F, I and P are empty, this is down from 128 * N to N.

The only part left in i2c-sensor is the VRM/VRD/VID handling code.
This is in no way related to i2c, so it doesn't belong there. Move
the code to hwmon, where it belongs.
Note that not all hardware monitoring drivers do VRM/VRD/VID
operations, so less drivers depend on hwmon-vid than there were
depending on i2c-sensor.

The only thing left in i2c-sensor.h are module parameter definition
macros. It's only an extension of what i2c.h offers, and this extension
is not sensors-specific. As a matter of fact, a few non-sensors drivers
use them. So we better merge them in i2c.h, and get rid of i2c-sensor.h
altogether.

We could refactor the error message 34 different i2c drivers print if
i2c_detach_client() fails in this function itself. Saves quite a few
lines of code. Documentation is updated to reflect that change.
Note that this patch should be applied after Rudolf Marek's w83792d

Kill all uses of i2c_is_isa_adapter except for the hybrid drivers (it87,
lm78, w83781d). The i2c-isa adapter not being registered with the i2c
core anymore, drivers don't have to fear being erroneously attached to
it.

normal_i2c could be renamed to normal, but I decided not to do so at the
moment, so as to limit the number of changes. This might be done later

Drop the separate client name for the LM78-J chip. This is really
only a later revision of the LM78, with almost no difference and
no difference the driver handles in any case.
This was the only client name that had a dash in it, and special care
had to be taken in libsensors because of it. As we plan to write a new
library soon, I'd like to get rid of this exception before we do.
As a nice side effect, it saves 876 bytes in lm78.ko.

PowerPC 40x and Book-E processors support a watchdog timer at the processor
core level. The timer has implementation dependent timeout frequencies
that can be configured by software.
One the first Watchdog timeout we get a critical exception. It is left to
board specific code to determine what should happen at this point. If
nothing is done and another timeout period expires the processor may
attempt to reset the machine.
Command line parameters:
wdt=0 : disable watchdog (default)
wdt=1 : enable watchdog
wdt_period=N : N sets the value of the Watchdog Timer Period.
The Watchdog Timer Period meaning is implementation specific. Check
User Manual for the processor for more details.

Add a "smaps" entry to /proc/pid: show howmuch memory is resident in each
mapping.
People that want to perform a memory consumption analysing can use it
mainly if someone needs to figure out which libraries can be reduced for
embedded systems. So the new features are the physical size of shared and
clean [or dirty]; private and clean [or dirty].

show_smap calls first show_map and then prints its additional information to
the seq_file. show_map checks if all it has to print fits into the buffer and
if yes marks the current vma as written. While that is correct for show_map
it is not for show_smap. Here the vma should be marked as written only after
the additional information is also written.
The attached patch cures the problem. It moves the functionality of the
show_map function to a new function show_map_internal that is called with an
additional struct mem_size_stats* argument. Then show_map calls
show_map_internal with NULL as struct mem_size_stats* whereas show_smap calls
it with a real pointer. Now the final
if (m->count < m->size) /* vma is copied successfully */
m->version = (vma != get_gate_vma(task))? vma->vm_start: 0;
is done only if the whole entry fits into the buffer.

The idea of a swap_device_lock per device, and a swap_list_lock over them all,
is appealing; but in practice almost every holder of swap_device_lock must
already hold swap_list_lock, which defeats the purpose of the split.
The only exceptions have been swap_duplicate, valid_swaphandles and an
untrodden path in try_to_unuse (plus a few places added in this series).
valid_swaphandles doesn't show up high in profiles, but swap_duplicate does
demand attention. However, with the hold time in get_swap_pages so much
reduced, I've not yet found a load and set of swap device priorities to show
even swap_duplicate benefitting from the split. Certainly the split is mere
overhead in the common case of a single swap device.
So, replace swap_list_lock and swap_device_lock by spinlock_t swap_lock
(generally we seem to prefer an _ in the name, and not hide in a macro).
If someone can show a regression in swap_duplicate, then probably we should
add a hashlock for the swap_map entries alone (shorts being anatomic), so as
to help the case of the single swap device too.

The XTEA implementation was incorrect due to a misinterpretation of
operator precedence. Because of the wide-spread nature of this
error, the erroneous implementation will be kept, albeit under the
new name of XETA.

The start_tx and stop_tx methods were passed a flag to indicate
whether the start/stop was from the tty start/stop callbacks, and
some drivers used this flag to decide whether to ask the UART to
immediately stop transmission (where the UART supports such a
feature.)
There are other cases when we wish this to occur - when CTS is
lowered, or if we change from soft to hard flow control and CTS
is inactive. In these cases, this flag was false, and we would
allow the transmitter to drain before stopping.
There is really only one case where we want to let the transmitter
drain before disabling, and that's when we run out of characters
to send.
Hence, re-jig the start_tx and stop_tx methods to eliminate this
flag, and introduce new functions for the special "disable and
allow transmitter to drain" case.

This patch changes .iface to SNDRV_CTL_ELEM_IFACE_MIXER whre _PCM or
_HWDEP was used in controls that are not associated with a specific PCM
(sub)stream or hwdep device, and changes some controls that got
inconsitent .iface values due to copy+paste errors. Furthermore, it
makes sure that all control that do use _PCM or _HWDEP use the correct
number in the .device field.

Don't log machine check events left over from boot. Too many BIOSes leave
bogus events in there.
This unfortunately also makes it impossible to log events that caused a
reboot. For people with non broken BIOS there is mce=bootlog

This patch upports all relevant code fixes and bumps the driver version
to 7.0 to signify starting a new tree.

no_overlay bttv parameter implemented to fix OOPS on some PCI chipsets
(like some VIA) with these behaviors:
1) If pci_quicks does identify the chip as having troubles to
handle PCI2PCI transfers, no_overlay defaults to 1. The user may force
it to 0, to reenable (not recommended).
2) For newer chipsets not blacklisted, no_overlay=1 is provided as a
workaround until PCI chipset included on /drivers/pci/quirks.c

show_i2c=1 will show 16 reading bytes from detected tuners.
- BTTV does generate some Unimplemented IOCTL log at tuner module:
0x40046d11(dir=1,tp=0x6d,nr=17,sz=4) means that it is sending
MSP3400 calls to non-msp3400 tuners. Warning eliminated.
VIDIOSAUDIO is also called, so debug messages updated. It is still
requiring IOCTL implementation.

inotify is intended to correct the deficiencies of dnotify, particularly
its inability to scale and its terrible user interface:
* dnotify requires the opening of one fd per each directory
that you intend to watch. This quickly results in too many
open files and pins removable media, preventing unmount.
* dnotify is directory-based. You only learn about changes to
directories. Sure, a change to a file in a directory affects
the directory, but you are then forced to keep a cache of
stat structures.
* dnotify's interface to user-space is awful. Signals?
inotify provides a more usable, simple, powerful solution to file change
notification:
* inotify's interface is a system call that returns a fd, not SIGIO.
You get a single fd, which is select()-able.
* inotify has an event that says "the filesystem that the item
you were watching is on was unmounted."
* inotify can watch directories or files.
Inotify is currently used by Beagle (a desktop search infrastructure),
Gamin (a FAM replacement), and other projects.

Make usbmon to print Setup packets of Control transfers. This is useful
when debugging enumeration issues.
This is a change to the trace format which is not fully compatible.
A parser has to look at the data length word now. If that word is
a character like 's', read setup packet before proceeding with data.
I decided not to bump the API tag for this because not many such
parsers exist at this point.

The I2C stack has long had "id" fields, of rather dubious utility, in
many data structures. This removes mention of one of them from the
documentation about how to write an I2C driver, so that only drivers
that really need to use them (probably old/legacy code) will have any
reason to use this field.

Schedule removal of the PCMCIA ioctl (and thus kernel support for the
pcmcia-cs userspace package) for November 2005.
A big "thank you" to Dave Hinds for his great work on supporting PCMCIA in
Linux. Things are just done differently by now, so the ongoing work to make
PCMCIA behave like any other hotpluggable bus should continue.

Anyone reporting a stuck IRQ should try these options. Its effectiveness
varies we've found in the Fedora case. Quite a few systems with misdescribed
IRQ routing just work when you use irqpoll. It also fixes up the VIA systems
although thats now fixed with the VIA quirk (which we could just make default
as its what Redmond OS does but Linus didn't like it historically).
A small number of systems have jammed IRQ sources or misdescribes that cause
an IRQ that we have no handler registered anywhere for. In those cases it
doesn't help.

I updated this to remove unnecessary variable initialization, make
check_routing be inline only and not __init, switch to strtoul, and
formatting fixes as per Randy Dunlap's recommendations.
I updated this to change pirq_table_addr to a long, and to add a warning
msg if the PIRQ table wasn't found at the specified address, as per thread
with Matthew Wilcox.
In our hardware situation, the BIOS is unable to store or generate it's PIRQ
table in the F0000h-100000h standard range. This patch adds a pci kernel
parameter, pirqaddr to allow the bootloader (or BIOS based loader) to inform
the kernel where the PIRQ table got stored. A beneficial side-effect is that,
if one's BIOS uses a static address each time for it's PIRQ table, then
pirqaddr can be used to avoid the $pirq search through that address block each
time at boot for normal PIRQ BIOSes.

Add some information useful for PCMCIA device driver authors to
Documentation/pcmcia/, and reference it in dmesg in case of hash mismatches.
Also add a reference to pcmciautils to Documentation/Changes. With recent
changes, you don't need to concern yourself with pcmcia-cs even if you have
PCMCIA hardware, so the example above the list needed to be adapted as well.

The situation: VFS inode X on a mounted ntfs volume is dirty. For
same inode X, the ntfs_inode is dirty and thus corresponding on-disk
inode, i.e. mft record, which is in a dirty PAGE_CACHE_PAGE belonging
to the table of inodes, i.e. $MFT, inode 0.
What happens:
Process 1: sys_sync()/umount()/whatever... calls
__sync_single_inode() for $MFT -> do_writepages() -> write_page for
the dirty page containing the on-disk inode X, the page is now locked
-> ntfs_write_mst_block() which clears PageUptodate() on the page to
prevent anyone else getting hold of it whilst it does the write out.
This is necessary as the on-disk inode needs "fixups" applied before
the write to disk which are removed again after the write and
PageUptodate is then set again. It then analyses the page looking
for dirty on-disk inodes and when it finds one it calls
ntfs_may_write_mft_record() to see if it is safe to write this
on-disk inode. This then calls ilookup5() to check if the
corresponding VFS inode is in icache(). This in turn calls ifind()
which waits on the inode lock via wait_on_inode whilst holding the
global inode_lock.
Process 2: pdflush results in a call to __sync_single_inode for the
same VFS inode X on the ntfs volume. This locks the inode (I_LOCK)
then calls write-inode -> ntfs_write_inode -> map_mft_record() ->
read_cache_page() for the page (in page cache of table of inodes
$MFT, inode 0) containing the on-disk inode. This page has
PageUptodate() clear because of Process 1 (see above) so
read_cache_page() blocks when it tries to take the page lock for the
page so it can call ntfs_read_page().
Thus Process 1 is holding the page lock on the page containing the
on-disk inode X and it is waiting on the inode X to be unlocked in
ifind() so it can write the page out and then unlock the page.
And Process 2 is holding the inode lock on inode X and is waiting for
the page to be unlocked so it can call ntfs_readpage() or discover
that Process 1 set PageUptodate() again and use the page.
Thus we have a deadlock due to ifind() waiting on the inode lock.
The solution: The fix is to use the newly introduced
ilookup5_nowait() which does not wait on the inode's lock and hence
avoids the deadlock. This is safe as we do not care about the VFS
inode and only use the fact that it is in the VFS inode cache and the
fact that the vfs and ntfs inodes are one struct in memory to find
the ntfs inode in memory if present. Also, the ntfs inode has its
own locking so it does not matter if the vfs inode is locked.

scsi_add_host is the proper place to set the device, but people copy
the scsi_set_device usage from older drivers again and again.
note that this leaves some legacy drivers like qlogicisp/qlogicfc
without pci association in sysfs, but they're scheduled to go away soon
anyway.

6. Clear potential race in refrigerator (provides an open window of PF_FREEZE
cleared before setting PF_FROZEN, recalc_sigpending does not check
PF_FROZEN).
This patch does not address the problem of freeze_processes() violating the rule
that a task may only modify its own flags by setting PF_FREEZE. This is not clean
in an SMP environment. freeze(process) is therefore not SMP safe!

helps in reducing driver initialization failures in second kernel due
to shared interrupts.

Quick kdump-howto
================================================================
1) Download and build kexec-tools.
2) Download and build the latest kexec/kdump (-mm) kernel patchset.
Two kernels need to be built in order to get this feature working.
A) First kernel:
a) Enable "kexec system call" feature:
CONFIG_KEXEC=y
b) Physical load address (use default):
CONFIG_PHYSICAL_START=0x100000
c) Enable "sysfs file system support":
CONFIG_SYSFS=y
d) Boot into first kernel with the command line parameter "crashkernel=Y@X":
For example: "crashkernel=64M@16M".
B) Second kernel:
a) Enable "kernel crash dumps" feature:
CONFIG_CRASH_DUMP=y
b) Physical load addreess, use same load address as X in "crashkernel"
kernel parameter in d) above, e.g., 16 MB or 0x1000000.
CONFIG_PHYSICAL_START=0x1000000
c) Enable "/proc/vmcore support" (Optional, in Pseudo filesystems).
CONFIG_PROC_VMCORE=y
3) Boot into the first kernel.
4) Load the second kernel to be booted using:
kexec -p <second-kernel> --crash-dump --args-linux --append="root=<root-dev>
maxcpus=1 init 1"
5) System reboots into the second kernel when a panic occurs. A module can be
written to force the panic, for testing purposes.
6) See Documentation/kdump.txt for how to read the first kernel's
memory image and how to analyze it.

This patch introduces the architecture independent implementation the
sys_kexec_load, the compat_sys_kexec_load system calls.
Kexec on panic support has been integrated into the core patch and is
relatively clean.
In addition the hopefully architecture independent option
crashkernel=size@location has been docuemented. It's purpose is to reserve
space for the panic kernel to live, and where no DMA transfer will ever be
setup to access.

This patch changes the memory allocation method for the s390 debug feature.
Trace buffers had been allocated using the get_free_pages() function before.
Therefore it was not possible to get big memory areas in a running system due
to memory fragmentation. Now the trace buffers are subdivided into several
subbuffers with pagesize. Therefore it is now possible to allocate more
memory for the trace buffers and more trace records can be written.
In addition to that, dynamic specification of the size of the trace buffers is
implemented. It is now possible to change the size of a trace buffer using a
new debugfs file instance. When writing a number into this file, the trace
buffer size is changed to 'number * pagesize'.
In the past all the traces could be obtained from userspace by accessing files
in the "proc" filesystem. Now with debugfs we have a new filesystem which
should be used for debugging purposes. This patch moves the debug feature
from procfs to debugfs.
Since the interface of debug_register() changed, all device drivers, which use
the debug feature had to be adjusted.

I8K: Change to use stock dmi infrastructure instead of homegrown
parsing code. The driver now requires box's DMI data to match
list of supported models so driver can be safely compiled-in
by default without fear of it poking into random SMM BIOS
code. DMI checks can be ignored with i8k.ignore_dmi option.

Even though it says DViCO FusionHDTV3 Gold-Q on the box, Gold-T is printed
on the card. This fix corrects the error in all places, and corrects the
tuner name Thomson DDT 7611 (ATSC/NTSC) in the documentation.
This applies against 2.6.12-rc5-mm2 after applying Manueal Capinha's
patch "Add support for PixelView Ultra Pro in v4l" (because of the
change from card=27 to card=28)

The below patch passes samples from anonymous regions to userspace instead
of just dropping them. This provides the support needed for reporting
anonymous-region code samples (today: basic accumulated results; later:
Java and other dynamically compiled code).
As this changes the format, an upgrade to the just-released 0.9 release of
the userspace tools is required.

This patch to adds "power cycle" functionality to the IPMI power off module
ipmi_poweroff. It also contains changes to support procfs control of the
feature.
The power cycle action is considered an optional chassis control in the IPMI
specification. However, it is definitely useful when the hardware supports
it. A power cycle is usually required in order to reset a firmware in a bad
state. This action is critical to allow remote management of servers.
The implementation adds power cycle as optional to the ipmi_poweroff module.
It can be modified dynamically through the proc entry mentioned above. During
a power down and enabled, the power cycle command is sent to the BMC firmware.
If it fails either due to non-support or some error, it will retry to send
the command as power off.

The attached patch makes the following changes:
(1) There's a new special key type called ".request_key_auth".
This is an authorisation key for when one process requests a key and
another process is started to construct it. This type of key cannot be
created by the user; nor can it be requested by kernel services.
Authorisation keys hold two references:
(a) Each refers to a key being constructed. When the key being
constructed is instantiated the authorisation key is revoked,
rendering it of no further use.
(b) The "authorising process". This is either:
(i) the process that called request_key(), or:
(ii) if the process that called request_key() itself had an
authorisation key in its session keyring, then the authorising
process referred to by that authorisation key will also be
referred to by the new authorisation key.
This means that the process that initiated a chain of key requests
will authorise the lot of them, and will, by default, wind up with
the keys obtained from them in its keyrings.
(2) request_key() creates an authorisation key which is then passed to
/sbin/request-key in as part of a new session keyring.
(3) When request_key() is searching for a key to hand back to the caller, if
it comes across an authorisation key in the session keyring of the
calling process, it will also search the keyrings of the process
specified therein and it will use the specified process's credentials
(fsuid, fsgid, groups) to do that rather than the calling process's
credentials.
This allows a process started by /sbin/request-key to find keys belonging
to the authorising process.
(4) A key can be read, even if the process executing KEYCTL_READ doesn't have
direct read or search permission if that key is contained within the
keyrings of a process specified by an authorisation key found within the
calling process's session keyring, and is searchable using the
credentials of the authorising process.
This allows a process started by /sbin/request-key to read keys belonging
to the authorising process.
(5) The magic KEY_SPEC_*_KEYRING key IDs when passed to KEYCTL_INSTANTIATE or
KEYCTL_NEGATE will specify a keyring of the authorising process, rather
than the process doing the instantiation.
(6) One of the process keyrings can be nominated as the default to which
request_key() should attach new keys if not otherwise specified. This is
done with KEYCTL_SET_REQKEY_KEYRING and one of the KEY_REQKEY_DEFL_*
constants. The current setting can also be read using this call.
(7) request_key() is partially interruptible. If it is waiting for another
process to finish constructing a key, it can be interrupted. This permits
a request-key cycle to be broken without recourse to rebooting.

The attached patch changes the key implementation in a number of ways:
(1) It removes the spinlock from the key structure.
(2) The key flags are now accessed using atomic bitops instead of
write-locking the key spinlock and using C bitwise operators.
The three instantiation flags are dealt with with the construction
semaphore held during the request_key/instantiate/negate sequence, thus
rendering the spinlock superfluous.
The key flags are also now bit numbers not bit masks.
(3) The key payload is now accessed using RCU. This permits the recursive
keyring search algorithm to be simplified greatly since no locks need be
taken other than the usual RCU preemption disablement. Searching now does
not require any locks or semaphores to be held; merely that the starting
keyring be pinned.
(4) The keyring payload now includes an RCU head so that it can be disposed
of by call_rcu(). This requires that the payload be copied on unlink to
prevent introducing races in copy-down vs search-up.
(5) The user key payload is now a structure with the data following it. It
includes an RCU head like the keyring payload and for the same reason. It
also contains a data length because the data length in the key may be
changed on another CPU whilst an RCU protected read is in progress on the
payload. This would then see the supposed RCU payload and the on-key data
length getting out of sync.
I'm tempted to drop the key's datalen entirely, except that it's used in
conjunction with quota management and so is a little tricky to get rid
of.
(6) Update the keys documentation.

Add a new `suid_dumpable' sysctl:
This value can be used to query and set the core dump mode for setuid
or otherwise protected/tainted binaries. The modes are
0 - (default) - traditional behaviour. Any process which has changed
privilege levels or is execute only will not be dumped
1 - (debug) - all processes dump core when possible. The core dump is
owned by the current user and no security is applied. This is intended
for system debugging situations only. Ptrace is unchecked.
2 - (suidsafe) - any binary which normally would not be dumped is dumped
readable by root only. This allows the end user to remove such a dump but
not access it directly. For security reasons core dumps in this mode will
not overwrite one another or other files. This mode is appropriate when
adminstrators are attempting to debug problems in a normal environment.

Actually the feedback I had from last time was that the SUID_ defines
should go because its clearer to follow the numbers. They can go
everywhere (and there are lots of places where dumpable is tested/used
as a bool in untouched code)

Fair comment. The patch was designed to be easy to maintain for Red Hat
rather than for merging. Changing that field would create a gigantic

Some months ago, you killed the address ranges mechanism from all
sensors i2c chip drivers (both the module parameters and the in-code
address lists). I think it was a very good move, as the ranges can
easily be replaced by individual addresses, and this allowed for
significant cleanups in the i2c core (let alone the impressive size
shrink for all these drivers).
Unfortunately you did not do the same for non-sensors i2c chip drivers.
These need the address ranges even less, so we could get rid of the
ranges here as well for another significant i2c core cleanup. Here comes
a patch which does just that. Since the process is exactly the same as
what you did for the other drivers set already, I did not split this one
in parts.
A documentation update is included.
The change saves 308 bytes in the i2c core, and an average 1382 bytes
for chip drivers which use I2C_CLIENT_INSMOD, 126 bytes for those which
do not.
This change is required if we want to merge the sensors and non-sensors
i2c code (and we want to do this).

The current isofs treatment of hidden files is flawed in two ways. First,
it does not provide sufficient granularity; it hides both 'hidden' files
and 'associated' files (resource fork for Mac files). Second, the default
behavior to completely strip hidden files, while an admirable
implementation of the spec, is a poor choice given the real world use of
hidden files as a poor mans copy protection scheme for MSDOS and Windows

This patch was originally built after a few private conversations with Alan
Cox; I shamefully failed to persist in seeing it go forward, I hope to make
amends now.
This patch introduces granularity by allowing explicit control for both
hidden and associated files. It also reverses the default so that by
default, hidden files are treated as regular files on the iso9660 file
system.
This allow Wine to process Windows CDs, including those that are hybrid
Mac/Windows CDs properly and completely, without our having to go muck up
peoples fstabs as we do now. (I have tested this with such a hybrid +
hidden CD and have verified that this patch works as claimed).

This series of patches reworks the configuration and internal structure
of the SGI IOC4 I/O controller device drivers.
These changes are motivated by several factors:
- The IOC4 chip PCI resources are of mixed use between functions (i.e.
multiple functions are handled in the same address range, sometimes
within the same register), muddling resource ownership and initialization
issues. Centralizing this ownership in a core driver is desirable.
- The IOC4 chip implements multiple functions (serial, IDE, others not
yet implemented in the mainline kernel) but is not a multifunction
PCI device. In order to properly handle device addition and removal
as well as module insertion and deletion, an intermediary IOC4-specific
driver layer is needed to handle these operations cleanly.
- All IOC4 drivers are currently enabled by a single CONFIG value. As
not all systems need all IOC4 functions, it is desireable to enable
these drivers independently.
- The current IOC4 core driver will trigger loading of all function-level
drivers, as it makes direct calls to them. This situation should be
reversed (i.e. function-level drivers cause loading of core driver)
in order to maintain a clear and least-surprise driver loading model.
- IOC4 hardware design necessitates some driver-level dependency on
the PCI bus clock speed. Current code assumes a 66MHz bus, but the
speed should be autodetected and appropriate compensation taken.
This patch series effects the above changes by a newly and better designed
IOC4 core driver with which the function-level drivers can register and
deregister themselves upon module insertion/removal. By tracking these
modules, device addition/removal is also handled properly. PCI resource
management and ownership issues are centralized in this core driver, and
IOC4-wide configuration actions such as bus speed detection are also
handled in this core driver.
This patch:
The SGI IOC4 I/O controller chip implements multiple functions, though it is
not a multi-function PCI device. Additionally, various PCI resources of the
IOC4 are shared by multiple hardware functions, and thus resource ownership by
driver is not clearly delineated. Due to the current driver design, all core
and subordinate drivers must be loaded, or none, which is undesirable if not
all IOC4 hardware features are being used.
This patch reorganizes the IOC4 drivers so that the core driver provides a
subdriver registration service. Through appropriate callbacks the subdrivers
can now handle device addition and removal, as well as module insertion and
deletion (though the IOC4 IDE driver requires further work before module
deletion will work). The core driver now takes care of allocating PCI
resources and data which must be shared between subdrivers, to clearly
delineate module ownership of these items.

To improve shmem scalability, we allowed tmpfs instances which don't need
their blocks or inodes limited not to count them, and not to allocate any
sbinfo. Which was okay when the only use for the sbinfo was accounting
blocks and inodes; but since then a couple of unrelated projects extending
tmpfs want to store other data in the sbinfo. Whether either extension
reaches mainline is beside the point: I'm guilty of a bad design decision,
and should restore sbinfo to make any such future extensions easier.
So, once again allocate a shmem_sb_info for every shmem/tmpfs instance, and
now let max_blocks 0 indicate unlimited blocks, and max_inodes 0 unlimited
inodes. Brent Casavant verified (many months ago) that this does not
perceptibly impact the scalability (since the unlimited sbinfo cacheline is
repeatedly accessed but only once dirtied).
And merge shmem_set_size into its sole caller shmem_remount_fs.

This is a fixed-up version of the broken "upstream-2.6.13" branch, where
I re-did the manual merge of drivers/net/r8169.c by hand, and made sure
the history is all good.
This adds a clause that notes explicitly that the person doing the
sign-off knows that the project (and his sign-off) is public and will
possibly get archived and re-distributed.

This patch changes the Intel HD Audio device driver to include
the support of HD Audio device embedded in ATI south bridge
IXP450. Because the design of ATI chipset follows intel HD Audio
specification 1.0, the programming method is the same as that
of intel HD Audio device exception one minor change which requires
to enable snoop for DMA transport. There are 3 changes that have been
made to hda_intel.c file.
1. Added device ID for ATI HD Audio device;
2. Increase maximum CODEC supported to 4;
3. Enable snoop during the driver initialization.

Add support for full sample rate conversion capabilities of DXS
channels present in VIA VT8233/5/7 controllers:
- any sample rate in the 8000 ... 48000 Hz range is supported even if
the AC'97 codec supports only 48000 Hz output;
- different DXS channels can use different sample rates at the same
time (the controller performs required sample rate conversion and
mixing in hardware).

I don't feel confident enough about it yet to enable it by default, but give

This patch removes the entwining of cpusets and hotplug code in the "No
more Mr. Nice Guy" case of sched.c move_task_off_dead_cpu().
Since the hotplug code is holding a spinlock at this point, we cannot take
the cpuset semaphore, cpuset_sem, as would seem to be required either to
update the tasks cpuset, or to scan up the nested cpuset chain, looking for
the nearest cpuset ancestor that still has some CPUs that are online. So
we just punt and blast the tasks cpus_allowed with all bits allowed.
This reverts these lines of code to what they were before the cpuset patch.
And it updates the cpuset Doc file, to match.
The one known alternative to this that seems to work came from Dinakar
Guniguntala, and required the hotplug code to take the cpuset_sem semaphore
much earlier in its processing. So far as we know, the increased locking
entanglement between cpusets and hot plug of this alternative approach is
not worth doing in this case.

The driver model has a "detach_state" mechanism that:
- Has never been used by any in-kernel drive;
- Is superfluous, since driver remove() methods can do the same thing;
- Became buggy when the suspend() parameter changed semantics and type;
- Could self-deadlock when called from certain suspend contexts;
- Is effectively wasted documentation, object code, and headspace.
This removes that "detach_state" mechanism; net code shrink, as well
as a per-device saving in the driver model and sysfs.

A Linux driver for the Chelsio 10Gb Ethernet Network Controller by Chelsio
(http://www.chelsio.com). This driver supports the Chelsio N210 NIC and is
backward compatible with the Chelsio N110 model 10Gb NICs. It supports

The performance recommendations in cxgb.txt are common to all fast devices,
and should be in one file rather than just for this device. I would rather
see ip-sysctl.txt updated or a new file on tuning recommendations started.
Some of them have consequences that aren't documented well.
For example, turning off TCP timestamps risks data corruption from sequence wrap.
A new driver shouldn't need so may #ifdef's unless you want to putit on older
vendor versions of 2.4
Some accessor and wrapper functions like:

xmlto uses standared XSLT templates to generate manpages, (x)html pages, and
XML FO files which can be processed with passivetex. This is much faster than
using jadetex for everything. This patch also reduces the number of
kernel-specific scripts that are needed to generate documentation.

I have recompiled Linux kernel 2.6.11.5 documentation for me and our
university students again. The documentation could be extended for more
sources which are equipped by structured comments for recent 2.6 kernels. I
have tried to proceed with that task. I have done that more times from 2.6.0
time and it gets boring to do same changes again and again. Linux kernel
compiles after changes for i386 and ARM targets. I have added references to
some more files into kernel-api book, I have added some section names as well.
So please, check that changes do not break something and that categories are
not too much skewed.
I have changed kernel-doc to accept "fastcall" and "asmlinkage" words reserved
by kernel convention. Most of the other changes are modifications in the
comments to make kernel-doc happy, accept some parameters description and do
not bail out on errors. Changed <pid> to @pid in the description, moved some
#ifdef before comments to correct function to comments bindings, etc.

Some more sources are ready to be included into kernel-doc generated
documentation. Sources has been added into kernel-api for now. Some more

The gpl exports need to be put back. Moving them to GPL -- but in a
measured manner, as I proposed on this list some months ago -- is fine.
Changing these particular exports precipitously is most definitely -not-

The specifications that talk about E820 map doesn't have an upper limit on
the number of e820 entries. But, today's kernel has a hard limit of 32.
With increase in memory size, we are seeing the number of E820 entries
reaching close to 32. Patch below bumps the number upto 128.
The patch changes the location of EDDBUF in zero-page (as it comes after E820).
As, EDDBUF is not used by boot loaders, this patch should not have any effect
on bootloader-setup code interface.
Patch covers both i386 and x86-64.
Tested on:
* grub booting bzImage
* lilo booting bzImage with EDID info enabled
* pxeboot of bzImage
Side-effect:
bss increases by ~ 2K and init.data increases by ~7.5K
on all systems, due to increase in size of static arrays.

these have been wrappers for the generic dma direction bits since 2.5.x.
This patch converts the few remaining drivers and removes the macros.
Arjan noticed there's some hunk in here that shouldn't. Updated patch

These have been deprecated since ->compat_ioctl when in, thus only a short
deprecation period. There's four users left: i2o_config, s390/z90crypy,
s390/dasd and s390/zfcp and for the first two patches are about to be
submitted to get rid of it.

Initial git repository build. I'm not bothering with the full history,
even though we have it. We can create a separate "historical" git
archive of that later if we want to, and in the meantime it's about
3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early
git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good
infrastructure for it.
Let it rip!
