drm/i915: Initialize LVDS and eDP outputs before anything else
This makes them sort to the front in X, which makes them likely to be
the primary outputs if you haven't specified a preference in your DE,
which is likely to be what you want.

None of drm_mode_debug_printmodeline(), drm_mode_equal(), drm_mode_width()

This requires a few changes since that dpcd value is above the
range currently cached by radeon. I've check the dp specs, and
above 0xf there's a big gap and nothing that looks like we should
cache it while a given device is plugged in. It's also the same value
that i915.ko uses.
Hence extend the various dpcd arrays in the radeon driver, use
proper symbolic constants where applicable (one place overallocated
the dpcd array to 25 bytes). Then also drop the rd_interval cache -
radeon_dp_link_train_init re-reads the dpcd block, so the values we'll
consume in train_cr and train_ce will always be fresh.
To avoid needless diff-churn, #define the old size of dpcd as the new
one and keep it around.

Remove non-UAPI Kbuild files that have become empty as a result of UAPI
disintegration. They used to have only header-y lines in them and those have
now moved to the Kbuild files in the corresponding uapi/ directories.
Possibly these should not be removed but rather have a comment inserted to say
they are intentionally left blank. This would make it easier to add generated
header lines in future without having to restore the infrastructure.
Note that at this point not all the UAPI disintegration parts have been merged,
so it is likely that more empty Kbuild files will turn up.
It is probably necessary to make the files non-empty to prevent the patch
program from automatically deleting them when it reduces them to nothing.

Pull preparatory patches for user API disintegration from David Howells:

Pull user namespace changes from Eric Biederman:
"This is a mostly modest set of changes to enable basic user namespace
support. This allows the code to code to compile with user namespaces
enabled and removes the assumption there is only the initial user
namespace. Everything is converted except for the most complex of the
filesystems: autofs4, 9p, afs, ceph, cifs, coda, fuse, gfs2, ncpfs,
nfs, ocfs2 and xfs as those patches need a bit more review.
The strategy is to push kuid_t and kgid_t values are far down into
subsystems and filesystems as reasonable. Leaving the make_kuid and
from_kuid operations to happen at the edge of userspace, as the values
come off the disk, and as the values come in from the network.
Letting compile type incompatible compile errors (present when user
namespaces are enabled) guide me to find the issues.
The most tricky areas have been the places where we had an implicit
union of uid and gid values and were storing them in an unsigned int.
Those places were converted into explicit unions. I made certain to
handle those places with simple trivial patches.
Out of that work I discovered we have generic interfaces for storing
quota by projid. I had never heard of the project identifiers before.
Adding full user namespace support for project identifiers accounts
for most of the code size growth in my git tree.
Ultimately there will be work to relax privlige checks from
"capable(FOO)" to "ns_capable(user_ns, FOO)" where it is safe allowing
root in a user names to do those things that today we only forbid to
non-root users because it will confuse suid root applications.
While I was pushing kuid_t and kgid_t changes deep into the audit code
I made a few other cleanups. I capitalized on the fact we process
netlink messages in the context of the message sender. I removed
usage of NETLINK_CRED, and started directly using current->tty.
Some of these patches have also made it into maintainer trees, with no
problems from identical code from different trees showing up in
linux-next.
After reading through all of this code I feel like I might be able to
win a game of kernel trivial pursuit."

For drivers that can support rotated scanout, the extra parameter
checking in drm-core, while nice, tends to get confused. To solve
this drivers can set the crtc or plane invert_dimensions field so
that the dimension checking takes into account the rotation that
the driver is performing.

This simplifies drm fb lifetime, and if the crtc/plane needs to hold
a ref to the fb when disabling a pipe until the next vblank, this
avoids the need to make disabling an overlay synchronous. This is a
problem that shows up when userspace is using a drm plane to
implement a hw cursor.. making overlay disable synchronous causes
a performance problem when x11 is rapidly enabling/disabling the
hw cursor. But not making it synchronous opens up a race condition
for crashing if userspace turns around and immediately deletes the
fb. Refcnt'ing the fb makes it possible to solve this problem.

But that failed to solve the entire problem. To avoid pushing out
further -nightly branch to our QA where this is broken, do the
backmerge and manually add the stuff git adds to -next from the patch
in -fixes.
Note that this doesn't show up in git's merge diff (and hence is also
not handled by git rerere), which adds to the reasons why I'd like to
fix this with a verbose backmerge. The git merge diff only shows a
bunch of trivial conflicts of the "code changed in lines next to each
another" kind.

Rather than have multiple data structures for describing our page layout
in conjunction with the array of pages, we can migrate all users over to
a scatterlist.
One major advantage, other than unifying the page tracking structures,
this offers is that we replace the vmalloc'ed array (which can be up to
a megabyte in size) with a chain of individual pages which helps reduce
memory pressure.
The disadvantage is that we then do not have a simple array to iterate,
or to access randomly. The common case for this is in the relocation
processing, which will typically fit within a single scatterlist page
and so be almost the same cost as the simple array. For iterating over
the array, the extra function call could be optimised away, but in
reality is an insignificant cost of either binding the pages, or
performing the pwrite/pread.

yet. In order to keep existing tests and userspace happy and free from

Many embedded drm devices do not have a IOMMU and no dedicated
memory for graphics. These devices use CMA (Contiguous Memory
Allocator) backed graphics memory. This patch provides helper
functions to be able to share the code. The code technically does
not depend on CMA as the backend allocator, the name has been chosen
because CMA makes for a nice, short but still descriptive function
prefix.

Limit printing bad edid information at one time per connector.
Connector that are connected to a bad monitor/kvm will likely
stay connected to the same bad monitor/kvm and it makes no
sense to keep printing the bad edid message.

The NV12M/YUV420M formats are identical to the NV12/YUV420 formats.
So just remove these duplicated format names.
This might look like breaking the ABI, but the code has never actually
accepted these formats, so nothing can be using them.

Neither the drm core nor any of the drivers really need the raw_edid field
of struct drm_display_info for anything. Instead of being useful, it
creates confusion about who is responsible for freeing the memory it points
to and setting the field to NULL afterwards, leading to memory leaks and
dangling pointers.
Remove the raw_edid field, and fix drivers as necessary.

In order for udl vmap to work properly, we need to push the object
into the CPU domain before we start copying the data to the USB device.
This along with the udl change avoids userspace explicit mapping to
be used.
v2: add a flag for userspace to query to know if Intel kernel driver can
deal with the vmap flushing properly. In theory udl would need a flag also,
but I intend to push the patches very close to each other and other drivers
should do the right thing from the start.
I've added a test to my intel-gpu-tools prime branch, however testing
this is a bit messy since the only way to get udl to vmap is to rendering
something. I've tested this with real code as well to make sure it works.

Userspace tries to estimate the cost of ring switching based on whether
the GPU and GEM supports semaphores. (If we have multiple rings and no
semaphores, userspace assumes that the cost of switching rings between
batches is exorbitant and will endeavour to keep the next batch on the
active ring - as a coarse approximation to tracking both destination and
source surfaces.) Currently userspace has to guess whether semaphores
exist based on the chipset generation and the module parameter,
i915.semaphores. This is a crude and inaccurate guess as the defaults
internally depend upon other chipset features being enabled or disabled,
nor does it extend well into the future. By exporting a HAS_SEMAPHORES
parameter, we can easily query the driver and obtain an accurate answer.

By selecting the cache level (essentially whether or not the CPU snoops
any updates to the bo, and on more recent machines whether it resides
inside the CPU's last-level-cache) a userspace driver is able to then
manage all of its memory within buffer objects, if it so desires. This
enables the userspace driver to accelerate uploads and more importantly
downloads from the GPU and to able to mix CPU and GPU rendering/activity
efficiently.

The intention is to help select which engine to use for copies with
interoperating clients - such as a GL client making a request to the X
server to perform a SwapBuffers, which may require copying from the
active GL back buffer to the X front buffer.
We choose to report a mask of the active rings to future proof the
interface against any changes which may allow for the object to reside
upon multiple rings.

The interface's immediate purpose is to do synchronous timestamp queries
as required by GL_TIMESTAMP. The GPU has a register for reading the
timestamp but because that would normally require root access through
libpciaccess, the IOCTL can provide this service instead.
Currently the implementation whitelists only the render ring timestamp
register, because that is the only thing we need to expose at this time.

Userspace uses long in quite a few places more than the kernel. Which
gives me neat proof that I'm the only guy on this side of the galaxy
who ever tried to run glxgears on a 64bit machine with sis graphics on
linux.
Note that the longs in drm_sis_mem_t aren't aligned properly, so this
won't even work with 32bit userspace on 64bit kernel as-is. Hence the
patch can't break that, either.
Nope, I'm not nuts enough to write the 32bit ioctl compat layer for
this and test it with some wine app. Even though hunting the ebay
dungeons for a sis card actually supported by the mesa drivers casts
some doubts on this ...

In order to support snoopable memory on non-LLC architectures (so that
we can bind vgem objects into the i915 GATT for example), we have to
avoid the prefetcher on the GPU from crossing memory domains and so
prevent allocation of a snoopable PTE immediately following an uncached
PTE. To do that, we need to extend the range allocator with support for
tracking and segregating different node colours.
This will be used by i915 to segregate memory domains within the GTT.

Merge tag 'v3.5-rc4' into drm-intel-next-queued
I want to merge the "no more fake agp on gen6+" patches into
drm-intel-next (well, the last pieces). But a patch in 3.5-rc4 also
adds a new use of dev->agp. Hence the backmarge to sort this out, for
otherwise drm-intel-next merged into Linus' tree would conflict in the
relevant code, things would compile but nicely OOPS at driver load :(
Conflicts in this merge are just simple cases of "both branches
changed/added lines at the same place". The only tricky part is to
keep the order correct wrt the unwind code in case of errors in
intel_ringbuffer.c (and the MI_DISPLAY_FLIP #defines in i915_reg.h

Use the rsvd1 field in execbuf2 to specify the context ID associated
with the workload. This will allow the driver to do the proper context
switch when/if needed.

To be able to directly set up the intel-gtt code from drm/i915 and
avoid setting up the fake-agp driver we need to prepare a few things:
- pass both the bridge and gpu pci_dev to the probe function and add
code to handle the gpu pdev both being present (for drm/i915) and
not present (fake agp).
- add refcounting to the remove function so that unloading drm/i915
doesn't kill the fake agp driver

Before Kernel 3.5, no one was checking for the return value of
drm_connector_attach_property, so we never noticed that we were unable
to create some properties. Commit "drm: WARN() when
drm_connector_attach_property fails" added a WARN when we fail to
create a property, and the transition from "connector properties" to
"object properties" changed the warning message a little bit.
On i915 machines with many TV connectors we hit the maximum number of
properties (since each TV connector uses a lot of properties), so we
get a few backtraces in our logs. This commit increases the maximum
number of properties to 24 hoping we'll have enough room for
everybody.
Chris suggested that we convert this code to "lists", but I believe
this conversion can come after we make sure people's dmesgs are not
spammed by our driver.

Change the ns_timeout parameter of the wait ioctl to a signed value.
Doing this allows the kernel to provide an infinite wait when a timeout
of less than 0 is provided. This mimics select/poll.
Initially the parameter was meant to match up with the GL spec 1:1, but
after being made aware of how much 2^64 - 1 nanoseconds actually is, I
do not think anyone will ever notice the loss of 1 bit.
The infinite timeout on waiting is similar to the existing i915
userspace interface with the exception that struct_mutex is dropped
while doing the wait in this ioctl.

ULONG_MAX is often used to check for integer overflow when calculating
allocation size. While ULONG_MAX happens to work on most systems, there
is no guarantee that `size_t' must be the same size as `long'.
This patch introduces SIZE_MAX, the maximum value of `size_t', to improve
portability and readability for allocation size validation.

This helps implement GL_ARB_sync but stops short of allowing full blown
sync objects. Finally we can use the new timed seqno waiting function
to allow userspace to wait on a buffer object with a timeout. This
implements that interface.
The IOCTL will take as input a buffer object handle, and a timeout in
nanoseconds (flags is currently optional but will likely be used for
permutations of flush operations). Users may specify 0 nanoseconds to
instantly check.
The wait ioctl with a timeout of 0 reimplements the busy ioctl. With any
non-zero timeout parameter the wait ioctl will wait for the given number
of nanoseconds on an object becoming unbusy. Since the wait itself does
so holding struct_mutex the object may become re-busied before this
completes. A similar but shorter race condition exists in the busy
ioctl.

This adds the ability for ttm common code to take an SG table
and use it as the backing for a slave TTM object.
The drivers can then populate their GTT tables using the SG object.

Low four bits are downstream port count. High bit indicates peer OUI
support. OUI matching will allow us to do additional per-sink handling
for things like DP->VGA bandwidth limits or (hopefully) the iMac-as-
display hack.

The G2D is a 2D graphic accelerator that supports Bit Block Transfer.
This G2D driver is exynos drm specific and supports only G2D(version
4.1) of later Exynos series from Exynos4X12 because supporting DMA.
The G2D is performed by two tasks simply.
1. Configures the rendering parameters, such as foreground color and
coordinates data by setting the drawing context registers.
2. Start the rendering process by setting thre relevant command
registers accordingly.
The G2D version 4.1 supports DMA mode as host interface. User can make
command list to reduce HOST(ARM) loads. The contents of The command list
is setted to relevant registers of G2D by DMA.
The command list is composed Header and command sets and Tail.
- Header: The number of command set(4Bytes)
- Command set: Register offset(4Bytes) + Register data(4Bytes)
- Tail: Pointer of base address of the other command list(4Bytes)
By Tail field, the G2D can process many command lists without halt at
one go.
The G2D has following the rendering pipeline.
--> Primitive Drawing --> Rotation --> Clipping --> Bilinear Sampling
--> Color Key --> ROP --> Mask Operation --> Alpha Blending -->
Dithering --> FrameBuffer
And supports various operations from the rendering pipeline.

- 4 operand raster operation(ROP4)
- masking operation
- alpha blending

- dithering
- etc
User should make the command list to data and registers needed by
operation to use. The Exynos G2D driver only manages the command lists
received from user. Some registers needs memory base address(physical
address) of image. User doesn't know its physical address, so fills the
gem handle of that memory than address to command sets, then G2D driver
converts it to memory base address.
We adds three ioctls and one event for Exynos G2D.

For now, only connectors have it. In the future, all objects that need
properties should use it. Since the structure is referenced inside
struct drm_mode_object, we will be able to deal with object properties
without knowing the real type of the object.

Also return void instead of int. We have more than 100 callers and
no one checks for the return value.
If this function fails the property won't be exposed by the get/set
ioctls, but we should probably survive. If this starts happening,
the solution will be to increase DRM_CONNECTOR_MAX_PROPERTY and
recompile the Kernel.

Previously these functions would assume that vma->vm_file was the
drm_file. Although if in some cases if the drm driver needs to use
something else for the backing file (such as the tmpfs filp) then this
assumption is no longer true. But vma->vm_private_data is still the
GEM object.
With this change, now the drm_device comes from the GEM object rather
than the drm_file so the driver is more free to play with vma->vm_file.
The scenario where this comes up is for mmap'ing of cached dmabuf's
for non-coherent systems, where the driver needs to use fault handling
and PTE shootdown to simulate coherency. We can't use the vma->vm_file
of the dmabuf, which is using anon_inode's address_space. The most
straightforward thing to do is to use the GEM object's obj->filp for
vma->vm_file in all cases, for which we need this patch.

Requiring the first byte of the EDID base block header to be 0 means we
don't fix up as many transfer errors as we could. Instead have the
callers specify whether it's meant to be block 0 or not, and
conditionally run header fixup based on that.

The new structs added in struct detailed_data_monitor_range must be
marked with packed attribute although the outer struct itself is
already marked as packed. Otherwise these 7-bytes structs may be
aligned, and give the wrong position and size for the data.

It won't find any, yet. Fix up callers to match: standard mode codes
will look prefer r-b modes for a given size if present, EST3 mode codes
will look for exactly the r-b-ness mentioned in the mode code. This
might mean fewer modes matched for EST3 mode codes between now and when
the DMT mode list regrows the r-b modes, but practically speaking EST3
codes don't exist in the wild.

Wrt regressions I've just got a report that gmbus (newly enabled
again in 3.4) is a bit noisy. I'm looking into this atm.
Also included are the rc6 enable patches for snb from Eugeni. I
wanted to include these in the main 3.4 pull but screwed it up.
Please hit me. Imo these kind of patches really should go in
before -rc1, but in thise case rc6 has brought us tons of press and
guinea pigs^W^W testers and ubuntu is already running with it. So
I estimate a pretty small chance for this to blow up.

- 2 patches to sanitize the register state left behind by the bios

Let's see if the "enable RC6 on sandybridge" finally works and sticks.
I've been enabling it by hand (i915.i915_enable_rc6=1) for several
months on my Macbook Air, and it definitely makes a difference (and has
worked for me). But every time we enabled it before it showed some odd
hw buglet for *somebody*.
This time it's all good, I'm sure.

Totally unexpected that this regressed. Luckily it sounds like we just
need to have dmar disable on the igfx, not the entire system. At least
that's what a few days of testing between Tony Vroon and me indicates.

This adds the basic drm dma-buf interface layer, called PRIME. This
commit doesn't add any driver support, it is simply and agreed upon starting
point so we can work towards merging driver support for the next merge window.
Current drivers with work done are nouveau, i915, udl, exynos and omap.
The main APIs exposed to userspace allow translating a 32-bit object handle
to a file descriptor, and a file descriptor to a 32-bit object handle.
The flags value is currently limited to O_CLOEXEC.

a band-aid, kernel.h was including <asm/bug.h> to pseudo link them.
This has caused confusion[1] and general yuck/WTF[2] reactions.

This adds a new chunk id to the CS ioctl to support the
INDIRECT_BUFFER_CONST packet.
On SI, the CP adds a new engine called the CE (Constant Engine)
which runs simulatenously with the DE (Drawing Engine, formerly
called the ME). This allows the CP to process two related IBs
simultaneously. The CE is tasked with loading the constant data
(constant buffers, resource descriptors, samplers, etc.) while
the DE loads context register state and issues drawing commands.
It's up to the userspace application to sychronize the CE and the
DE using special synchronization packets.

On Sanybridge a few MI read/write commands only work when ppgtt is
enabled. Userspace therefore needs to be able to check whether ppgtt
is enabled. For added hilarity, you need to reset the "use global GTT"
bit on snb when ppgtt is enabled, otherwise it won't work. Despite
what bspec says about automatically using ppgtt ...
Luckily PIPE_CONTROL (the only write cmd current userspace uses) is
not affected by all this, as tested by tests/gem_pipe_control_store_loop.

Broken monitors and/or broken graphic boards may send erroneous or no
EDID data. This also applies to broken KVM devices that are unable to
correctly forward the EDID data of the connected monitor but invent
their own fantasy data.
This patch allows to specify an EDID data set to be used instead of
probing the monitor for it. It contains built-in data sets of frequently
used screen resolutions. In addition, a particular EDID data set may be
provided in the /lib/firmware directory and loaded via the firmware
interface. The name is passed to the kernel as module parameter of the
drm_kms_helper module either when loaded

or as kernel commandline parameter

It is also possible to restrict the usage of a specified EDID data set
to a particular connector. This is done by prepending the name of the
connector to the name of the EDID data set using the syntax
edid_firmware=[<connector>:]<edid>
such as, for example,
edid_firmware=DVI-I-1:edid/1920x1080.bin
in which case no other connector will be affected.
The built-in data sets are

They are ignored, if a file with the same name is available in the

The built-in EDID data sets are based on standard timings that may not
apply to a particular monitor and even crash it. Ideally, EDID data of
the connected monitor should be used. They may be obtained through the
drm/cardX/cardX-<connector>/edid entry in the /sys/devices PCI directory
of a correctly working graphics adapter.
It is even possible to specify the name of an EDID data set on-the-fly
via the /sys/module interface, e.g.

The new screen mode is considered when the related kernel function is
called for the first time after the change. Such calls are made when the
X server is started or when the display settings dialog is opened in an
already running X server.

Two parts to this, one is simple unplug from sysfs for the device node.
The second adds an unplugged state, if we have device opens, we
just set the unplugged state and return, if we have no device
opens we drop the drm device.
If after a lastclose we discover we are unplugged we then
drop the drm device.
v2: use an atomic for unplugged and wrap it for users,
add checks on open + mmap + ioctl entry points.

In order to get correct ordering at hot-unplug for userspace,
we need to tear down all the sysfs bits at the correct time.
This adds a helper to allow drivers to remove the sysfs nodes

Change drm_mode_attachmode_crtc() to take an "all or nothing" approach.
If an error is returned, there are no side effects visible.
Also change the function to always duplicate the mode passed in.
Also change the function to not give up when it finds the first
connector without and encoder.
A simpler approach would be to just remove the function completely as
it's unused currently.

If a header file is making use of BUG, BUG_ON, BUILD_BUG_ON, or any
other BUG variant in a static inline (i.e. not in a #define) then
that header really should be including <linux/bug.h> and not just
expecting it to be implicitly present.
We can make this change risk-free, since if the files using these
headers didn't have exposure to linux/bug.h already, they would have
been causing compile failures/warnings.

Manually resolve the conflict between the new enum drm property
helpers in drm-next and the new "force-dvi" option that the "audio" output
property gained in drm-intel-next.
While resolving this conflict, switch the new drm_prop_enum_list to
use the newly introduced enum defines instead of magic values.

For the simple KMS driver case we need some more info about what the preferred
depth and if a shadow framebuffer is preferred.
I've only added this for intel/radeon which support the dumb ioctls so far.
If you need something really fancy you should be writing a real X.org driver.
v2: drop cursor information, just return an error from the cursor ioctls
and we can make userspace fallback to sw cursor in that case, cursor
info was getting too messy, best to start smaller.

evergreen and northern island gpu needs more informations for 2D tiling
than previous r6xx/r7xx. Add field to tiling ioctl to allow userspace
to provide those.

Back-merge from drm-fixes into drm-intel-next to sort out two things:
- interlaced support: -fixes contains a bugfix to correctly clear
interlaced configuration bits in case the bios sets up an interlaced
mode and we want to set up the progressive mode (current kernels
don't support interlaced). The actual feature work to support
interlaced depends upon (and conflicts with) this bugfix.
- forcewake voodoo to workaround missed IRQ issues: -fixes only enabled
this for ivybridge, but some recent bug reports indicate that we
need this on Sandybridge, too. But in a slightly different flavour
and with other fixes and reworks on top. Additionally there are some
forcewake cleanup patches heading to -next that would conflict with
currrent -fixes.

drm_mode_crtc_set_gamma_size returns boolean true for success
and false for failure. This is not very kernel conform, so
change it to return 0 for success and a propert error code
otherwise. Noone checks the return value, so no users have to
be fixed.

If the master tries to authenticate a client using drm_authmagic and
that client has already closed its drm file descriptor,
either wilfully or because it was terminated, the
call to drm_authmagic will dereference a stale pointer into kmalloc'ed memory
and corrupt it.
Typically this results in a hard system hang.
This patch fixes that problem by removing any authentication tokens
(struct drm_magic_entry) open for a file descriptor when that file
descriptor is closed.

There exists at least one NVIDIA GPU (Quadro NVS 300) that has a DMS-59
connector which is capable of supporting DisplayPort, TMDS and VGA on
a single connector.
We need to bump the allowed encoder limit to support all three configs.

Fix up trivial conflicts in arch/powerpc/platforms/40x/Kconfig (some new
kconfig additions, close to removed commented-out old ones)
So we have a few places where the drm drivers would like to sleep to
be nice to the system, mainly in the modesetting paths, but we also
have two cases were atomic modesetting must take place, panic writing
and kernel debugger. So provide a central inline to determine if a
sleep or delay should be used and use this in the intel and radeon drivers.

ttm tt rework modified the way we allocate and populate the
ttm_tt structure, the AGP side was missing some bit to properly
work. Fix those and fix radeon and nouveau AGP support.
Tested on radeon only so far.

Virtual address space are per drm client (opener of /dev/drm).
Client are in charge of virtual address space, they need to
map bo into it by calling DRM_RADEON_GEM_VA ioctl.
First 16M of virtual address space is reserved by the kernel.
Once using 2 level page table we should be able to have a small
vram memory footprint for each pt (there would be one pt for all
gart, one for all vram and then one first level for each virtual
address space).
Plan include using the sub allocator for a common vm page table
area and using memcpy to copy vm page table in & out. Or use
a gart object and copy things in & out using dma.

In cases where the scanout hw is sufficiently similar between "overlay"
and traditional crtc layers, it might be convenient to allow the driver
to create internal drm_plane helper objects used by the drm_crtc
implementation, rather than duplicate code between the plane and crtc.
A private plane is not exposed to userspace.

These registers are automatically incremented by the hardware during
transform feedback to track where the next streamed vertex output
should go. Unlike the previous generation, which had a packet for
setting the corresponding registers to a defined value, gen7 only has
MI_LOAD_REGISTER_IMM to do so. That's a secure packet (since it loads
an arbitrary register), so we need to do it from the kernel, and it
needs to be settable atomically with the batchbuffer execution so that
two clients doing transform feedback don't stomp on each others'
state.
Instead of building a more complicated interface involcing setting the
registers to a specific value, just set them to 0 when asked and
userland can tweak its pointers accordingly.

Add new ioctls for getting and setting the current destination color
key. This allows for simple overlay display control by matching a color
key value in the primary plane before blending the overlay on top.

This patch is hdmi display support for exynos drm driver.
There is already v4l2 based exynos hdmi driver in drivers/media/video/s5p-tv
and some low level code is already in s5p-tv and even headers for register
define are almost same. but in this patch, we decide not to consider separated
common code with s5p-tv.
Exynos HDMI is composed of 5 blocks, mixer, vp, hdmi, hdmiphy and ddc.
1. mixer. The piece of hardware responsible for mixing and blending multiple
data inputs before passing it to an output device. The mixer is capable of
handling up to three image layers. One is the output of VP. Other two are
images in RGB format. The blending factor, and layers' priority are controlled
by mixer's registers. The output is passed to HDMI.
2. vp (video processor). It is used for processing of NV12/NV21 data. An image
stored in RAM is accessed by DMA. The output in YCbCr444 format is send to
mixer.
3. hdmi. The piece of HW responsible for generation of HDMI packets. It takes
pixel data from mixer and transforms it into data frames. The output is send
to HDMIPHY interface.
4. hdmiphy. Physical interface for HDMI. Its duties are sending HDMI packets to
HDMI connector. Basically, it contains a PLL that produces source clock for
mixer, vp and hdmi.
5. ddc (display data channel). It is dedicated i2c channel to exchange display
information as edid with display monitor.
With plane support, exynos hdmi driver fully supports two mixer layes and vp
layer. Also vp layer supports multi buffer plane pixel formats having non
contigus memory spaces.
In exynos drm driver, common drm_hdmi driver to interface with drm framework
has opertion pointers for mixer and hdmi. this drm_hdmi driver is registered as
sub driver of exynos_drm. hdmi has hdmiphy and ddc i2c clients and controls
them. mixer controls all overlay layers in both mixer and vp.
Vblank interrupts for hdmi are handled by mixer internally because drm
framework cannot support multiple irq id. And pipe number is used to check
which display device irq happens.

Multi buffer plane pixel format has seperated memory spaces for each
plane. For example, NV12M has Y plane and CbCr plane and these are in
non contiguous memory region. Compared with NV12, NV12M's memory shape
is like following.

In contrast to kms drivers, sis/via _always_ associated a buffer with
a drm fd. So by the time we reach lastclose, all open drm fds are gone
and with them their associated objects.
So when sis/via call drm_sman_cleanup in their lastclose funcs, that
will free 0 objects.
The owner tracking now serves no purpose at all, hence rip it ou. We
can't kill the corresponding fields in struct drm_memblock_item yet
because we hijack these in the new driver private owner tracking. But
now that drm_sman.c doesn't touch ->owner_list anymore, we need to
kill the list_move hack and properly add the item to the file_priv
list.
Also leave the list_del(&obj->owner_list) in drm_sman_free for the
moment, it will move to the drivers when sman disappears completely.

By attach a driver private struct to each open drm fd.
Because we steal the owner_list from drm_sman until things settle,
use list_move instead of list_add.
This requires to export a drm_sman function temporarily before
drm_sman will die for real completely.

The exynos fimd supports 5 window overlays. Only one window overlay of
fimd is used by the crtc, so we need plane feature to use the rest
window overlays.
This creates one ioctl exynos specific - DRM_EXYNOS_PLANE_SET_ZPOS, it
is the ioctl to decide for user to assign which window overlay.

Provide helper function to compute the kernel memory size needed
for each buffer object. Move all the accounting inside ttm, simplifying
driver and avoiding code duplication accross them.

In TTM world the pages for the graphic drivers are kept in three different
pools: write combined, uncached, and cached (write-back). When the pages
are used by the graphic driver the graphic adapter via its built in MMU
(or AGP) programs these pages in. The programming requires the virtual address
(from the graphic adapter perspective) and the physical address (either System RAM
or the memory on the card) which is obtained using the pci_map_* calls (which does the
virtual to physical - or bus address translation). During the graphic application's
"life" those pages can be shuffled around, swapped out to disk, moved from the
VRAM to System RAM or vice-versa. This all works with the existing TTM pool code
- except when we want to use the software IOTLB (SWIOTLB) code to "map" the physical
addresses to the graphic adapter MMU. We end up programming the bounce buffer's
physical address instead of the TTM pool memory's and get a non-worky driver.
There are two solutions:
1) using the DMA API to allocate pages that are screened by the DMA API, or
2) using the pci_sync_* calls to copy the pages from the bounce-buffer and back.
This patch fixes the issue by allocating pages using the DMA API. The second
is a viable option - but it has performance drawbacks and potential correctness
issues - think of the write cache page being bounced (SWIOTLB->TTM), the
WC is set on the TTM page and the copy from SWIOTLB not making it to the TTM
page until the page has been recycled in the pool (and used by another application).
The bounce buffer does not get activated often - only in cases where we have
a 32-bit capable card and we want to use a page that is allocated above the
4GB limit. The bounce buffer offers the solution of copying the contents
of that 4GB page to an location below 4GB and then back when the operation has been
completed (or vice-versa). This is done by using the 'pci_sync_*' calls.
Note: If you look carefully enough in the existing TTM page pool code you will
notice the GFP_DMA32 flag is used - which should guarantee that the provided page
is under 4GB. It certainly is the case, except this gets ignored in two cases:
- If user specifies 'swiotlb=force' which bounces _every_ page.
- If user is using a Xen's PV Linux guest (which uses the SWIOTLB and the
underlaying PFN's aren't necessarily under 4GB).
To not have this extra copying done the other option is to allocate the pages
using the DMA API so that there is not need to map the page and perform the
expensive 'pci_sync_*' calls.
This DMA API capable TTM pool requires for this the 'struct device' to
properly call the DMA API. It also has to track the virtual and bus address of
the page being handed out in case it ends up being swapped out or de-allocated -
to make sure it is de-allocated using the proper's 'struct device'.
Implementation wise the code keeps two lists: one that is attached to the
'struct device' (via the dev->dma_pools list) and a global one to be used when
the 'struct device' is unavailable (think shrinker code). The global list can
iterate over all of the 'struct device' and its associated dma_pool. The list
in dev->dma_pools can only iterate the device's dma_pool.

The maximum amount of dma pools a device can have is six: write-combined,
uncached, and cached; then there are the DMA32 variants which are:
write-combined dma32, uncached dma32, and cached dma32.
Currently this code only gets activated when any variant of the SWIOTLB IOMMU
code is running (Intel without VT-d, AMD without GART, IBM Calgary and Xen PV
with PCI devices).

Move the page allocation and freeing to driver callback and
provide ttm code helper function for those.
Most intrusive change, is the fact that we now only fully

ttm_backend will only exist with a ttm_tt, and ttm_tt
will only be of interest when bound to a backend. Merge them
to avoid code and data duplication.

Split btw highmem and lowmem page was rendered useless by the
pool code. Remove it. Note further cleanup would change the
ttm page allocation helper to actualy take an array instead
of relying on list this could drasticly reduce the number of
function call in the common case of allocation whole buffer.

We never used initial_x/y or the force_encoder_id, so drop those fields
and proide a basic description of the others.
Really, the ELD bits belong in drm_display_info rather than directly in
the connector, but that's a separate cleanup.

Name the formats as DRM_FORMAT_X instead of DRM_FOURCC_X. Use consistent
names, especially for the RGB formats. Component order and byte order are
now strictly specified for each format.
The RGB format naming follows a convention where the components names
and sizes are listed from left to right, matching the order within a
single pixel from most significant bit to least significant bit.
The YUV format names vary more. For the 4:2:2 packed formats and 2
plane formats use the fourcc. For the three plane formats the
name includes the plane order and subsampling information using the
standard subsampling notation. Some of those also happen to match
the official fourcc definition.
The fourccs for for all the RGB formats and some of the YUV formats
I invented myself. The idea was that looking at just the fourcc you
get some idea what the format is about without having to decode it
using some external reference.

There is a potential integer overflow in drm_mode_dirtyfb_ioctl()
if userspace passes in a large num_clips. The call to kmalloc would
allocate a small buffer, and the call to fb->funcs->dirty may result
in a memory corruption.

This adds a new optional chunk to the CS ioctl that specifies optional flags
to the CS parser. Why this is useful is explained below. Note that some regs
no longer need the NOP relocation packet if this feature is enabled.
Tested on r300g and r600g with this flag disabled and enabled.
Assume there are two contexts sharing the same mipmapped tiled texture.
One context wants to render into the first mipmap and the other one
wants to render into the last mipmap. As you probably know, the hardware
has a MACRO_SWITCH feature, which turns off macro tiling for small mipmaps,
but that only applies to samplers.
(at least on r300-r500, though later hardware likely behaves the same)
So we want to just re-set the tiling flags before rendering (writing
packets), right? ... No. The contexts run in parallel, so they may
set the tiling flags simultaneously and then fire their command streams
also simultaneously. The last one setting the flags wins, the other one
loses.
Another problem is when one context wants to render into the first and
the last mipmap in one CS. Impossible. It must flush before changing
tiling flags and do the rendering into the smaller mipmaps in another CS.
Yet another problem is that writing copy_blit in userspace would be a mess
involving re-setting tiling flags to please the kernel, and causing races
with other contexts at the same time.
The only way out of this is to send tiling flags with each CS, ideally
with each relocation. But we already do that through the registers.
So let's just use what we have in the registers.

To properly support the various plane formats supported by different
hardware, the kernel must know the pixel format of a framebuffer object.
So add a new ioctl taking a format argument corresponding to a fourcc
name from the new drm_fourcc.h header file. Implement the fb creation
hooks in terms of the new mode_fb_cmd2 using helpers where the old
bpp/depth values are needed.

Planes are a bit like half-CRTCs. They have a location and fb, but
don't drive outputs directly. Add support for handling them to the core
KMS code.

The DRM layer keeps a copy of struct file_operations inside its
big driver struct... which prevents it from being consistent and static.
For consistency (and the general security objective of having such things
static), it's desirable to get this fixed.
This patch splits out the file_operations field to its own struct,
which is then "static const", and just stick a pointer to this into
the driver struct, making it more consistent with how the rest of the
kernel does this.

Nouveau, when configured with debugfs, creates debugfs files for every
channel, so structure holding list of files needs to be protected from
simultaneous changes by multiple threads.
Without this patch it's possible to hit kernel oops in
drm_debugfs_remove_files just by running a couple of xterms with
looped glxinfo.

We need to redefine a connector as "connected" if it matches a window
in the host preferred GUI layout.
Otherwise "smart" window managers would turn on Xorg outputs that we don't
want to be on.
This reinstates the update_layout and adds the following information to
the modesetting system.
a) Connection status <-> Equivalent to real hardware connection status
b) Preferred mode <-> Equivalent to real hardware reading EDID
c) Host window position <-> Equivalent to a real hardware scanout address
dynamic register.
It should be noted that there is no assumption here about what should be
displayed and where. Only how to access the host windows.
This also bumps minor to signal availability of the new IOCTL.

The <linux/module.h> pretty much brings in the kitchen sink along
with it, so it should be avoided wherever reasonably possible in
terms of being included from other commonly used <linux/something.h>
files, as it results in a measureable increase on compile times.
The worst culprit was probably device.h since it is used everywhere.
This file also had an implicit dependency/usage of mutex.h which was
masked by module.h, and is also fixed here at the same time.
There are over a dozen other headers that simply declare the
struct instead of pulling in the whole file, so follow their lead
and simply make it a few more.
Most of the implicit dependencies on module.h being present by
these headers pulling it in have been now weeded out, so we can
finally make this change with hopefully minimal breakage.

DPCD 1.1+ adds some automated test infrastructure support. Add support
for reading the IRQ source and jumping to a test handling routine if
needed. Subsequent patches will handle particular tests; this patch
just ACKs any requested tests by default.

Add the addresses and definitions I care about for Panel Self Refresh, as
documented in the eDP spec.
I'm sending these out before some other patches because this should be a fairly
simple one to get upstream and not require too much fuss (where the others may
have some fuss).
This file is a mess with white spacing. I tried to stay consistent with the
surrounding code.

an exported variable from iommu code.

Add a way to send DRM events down the gpu fifo by attaching them to
fence objects. This may be useful for Xserver swapbuffer throttling and
page-flip done notifications.
Bump version to 2.2 to signal the availability of the FENCE_EVENT ioctl.

We tried to re-use lowlevel codes of the FIMD driver(s3c-fb.c
based on Linux framebuffer) but couldn't so because lowlevel codes
of s3c-fb.c are included internally and so FIMD module of this driver has
its own lowlevel codes.
We used GEM framework for buffer management and DMA APIs(dma_alloc_*)
for buffer allocation so we can allocate physically continuous memory
for DMA through it and also we could use CMA later if CMA is applied to
mainline.

ELD (EDID-Like Data) describes to the HDMI/DP audio driver the audio
capabilities of the plugged monitor.
This adds drm_edid_to_eld() for converting EDID to ELD. The converted
ELD will be saved in a new drm_connector.eld[128] data field. This is
necessary because the graphics driver will need to fixup some of the
data fields (eg. HDMI/DP connection type, AV sync delay) before writing
to the hardware ELD buffer. drm_av_sync_delay() will help the graphics
drivers dynamically compute the AV sync delay for fixing-up the ELD.
ELD selection policy: it's possible for one encoder to be associated
with multiple connectors (ie. monitors), in which case the first found
ELD will be returned by drm_select_eld(). This policy may not be
suitable for all users, but let's start it simple first.
The impact of ELD selection policy: assume there are two monitors, one
supports stereo playback and the other has 8-channel output; cloned
display mode is used, so that the two monitors are associated with the
same internal encoder. If only the stereo playback capability is reported,
the user won't be able to start 8-channel playback; if the 8-channel ELD
is reported, then user space applications may send 8-channel samples
down, however the user may actually be listening to the 2-channel
monitor and not connecting speakers to the 8-channel monitor.
According to James, many TVs will either refuse the display anything or
pop-up an OSD warning whenever they receive hdmi audio which they cannot
handle. Eventually we will require configurability and/or per-monitor
audio control even when the video is cloned.

This bumps driver major version as a result of previous incompatible
interface changes.
In addition, a leftover command definition is removed from the
vmwgfx_drm.h header.
Also a strict version check is enforced on the exebuf ioctl.
This is intended to be the last major bump before exiting staging.

This is needed before we introduce the fence objects.
Otherwise this will be even more confusing. The plan is to use the following:
seqno: A 32-bit sequence number that may be passed in the fifo.
marker: Objects, carrying a seqno, that track fifo submission time. They
are used for fifo lag based throttling.
fence objects: Kernel space objects, possibly accessible from user-space and
carrying a 32-bit seqno together with signaled status.

The new DRM_RADEON_GEM_WAIT ioctl combines GEM_WAIT_IDLE and GEM_BUSY (there
is a NO_WAIT flag to get the latter) with USAGE_READ and USAGE_WRITE flags
to take advantage of the new ttm_bo_wait changes.
Also bump the DRM version.

Sometimes we want to know whether a buffer is busy and wait for it (bo_wait).
However, sometimes it would be more useful to be able to query whether
a buffer is busy and being either read or written, and wait until it's stopped
being either read or written. The point of this is to be able to avoid
unnecessary waiting, e.g. if a GPU has written something to a buffer and is now
reading that buffer, and a CPU wants to map that buffer for read, it needs to
only wait for the last write. If there were no write, there wouldn't be any
waiting needed.
This, or course, requires user space drivers to send read/write flags
with each relocation (like we have read/write domains in radeon, so we can
actually use those for something useful now).
Now how this patch works:
The read/write flags should passed to ttm_validate_buffer. TTM maintains
separate sync objects of the last read and write for each buffer, in addition
to the sync object of the last use of a buffer. ttm_bo_wait then operates
with one the sync objects.

Provides function drm_edid_header_is_valid() for EDID header check
and replaces EDID header check part of function drm_edid_block_valid()
by a call of drm_edid_header_is_valid().
This is a prerequisite to extend DDC probing, e. g. in function
radeon_ddc_probe() for Radeon devices, by a central EDID header check.
Tested for kernel 2.6.35, 2.6.38 and 3.0

Drivers need to know the CEA version number in addition to other display
info (like whether the display is an HDMI sink) before enabling certain
features. So track the CEA version number in the display info
structure.

These small changes should allow GEM to be used with non shmem objects as
well as shmem objects. In the GMA500 case it allows the base framebuffer to
appear as a GEM object and thus acquire a handle and work with KMS.
For i915 it ought to be trivial to get back the wasted memory but putting the
system fb back into stolen RAM and in general I can imagine it allowing the
use of GEM and thus KMS with all the older cards that have their framebuffer
firmly placed in video RAM.

Because of a typo, calling ioctl with DRM_IOCTL_I915_OVERLAY_PUT_IMAGE
is broken if the macro is used directly. When using libdrm the bug is
not hit, since libdrm handles the ioctl encoding internally.
The typo also leads to the .cmd and .cmd_drv fields of the drm_ioctl
structure for DRM_I915_OVERLAY_PUT_IMAGE having inconsistent content.

drm_pci_device_is_pcie duplicates the funcationality of pci_is_pcie.
Convert callers of the former to the latter. This has the side benefit
of removing an unnecessary search in the PCI configuration space due to
using a saved PCIe capability offset.

Some RS690 chipsets seem to end up with floating connectors, either
a DVI connector isn't actually populated, or an add-in HDMI card
is available but not installed. In this case we seem to get a NULL byte
response for each byte of the i2c transaction, so we detect this
case and if we see it we don't do anymore DDC transactions on this
connector.
I've tested this on my RS690 without the HDMI card installed and
it seems to work fine.

The looping helper didn't do anything due to a superficial
semicolon. Furthermore one of the two dump functions suffered
from copy&paste fail.
While staring at the code I've also noticed that the replace
helper (currently unused) is a bit broken.

In the absence of configuration data for providing the fixed mode for
a panel, I would like to be able to pass such modes along a separate
module paramenter. To do so, I then need to parse a modeline from a
string, which drm is already capable of. Export that capability to the
drivers.

EDID 1.4 digital monitors report the bit depth supported in the input
field. Add support for parsing this out and storing the info in the
display_info structure for use by drivers.

i915 calls the panic handler function on last close to reset the modes,
however this is a really bad idea for multi-gpu machines, esp shareable
gpus machines. So add a new entry point for the driver to just restore
its own fbcon mode.

powered off GPUs.

and thus cannot be represented with primary/secondary flags in the legacy

This patch extends the interface to drm_wait_vblank ioctl so that crtc>1
can be represented. It also adds a new capability to drm_getcap ioctl so
that the user space can check whether the new interface to drm_wait_vblank
is supported (and fall back to the legacy interface if not)

the core DRM, in addition to the driver-specific ioctls that already

Userspace has a legitimate requirement to use a delta that points to
outside of the target bo, and so we need to enable this. (As this is an
abi break, albeit a relaxation of the current restrictions, mark the change
with a new flag.)

With the switch to implicit free space accounting one pointer
got unused when scanning. Use it to create a single-linked list
to ensure correct unwinding of the scan state.

The old api has a two-step process: First search for a suitable
free hole, then allocate from that specific hole. No user used
this to do anything clever. So drop it for the embeddable variant
of the drm_mm api (the old one retains this ability, for the time
being).
With struct drm_mm_node embedded, we cannot track allocations
anymore by checking for a NULL pointer. So keep track of this
and add a small helper drm_mm_node_allocated.
Also add a function to move allocations between different struct
drm_mm_node.

The idea is to track free holes implicitly by marking the allocation
immediatly preceeding a hole.
To avoid an ugly corner case add a dummy head_node to struct drm_mm
to track the hole that spans to complete allocation area when the
memory manager is empty.
To guarantee that there's always a preceeding/following node (that might
be marked as hole_follows == 1), move the mm->node_list list_head to the
head_node.
The main allocator and fair-lru scan code actually becomes simpler.
Only the debug code slightly suffers because free areas are no longer
explicit.
Also add drm_mm_for_each_node (which will be much more useful when
struct drm_mm_node is embeddable).

This abstracts the pci/platform interface out a step further,
we can go further but this is far enough for now to allow USB
to be plugged in.
The drivers now just call the init code directly for their

This is just an idea that might or might not be a good idea,
it basically adds two ioctls to create a dumb and map a dumb buffer
suitable for scanout. The handle can be passed to the KMS ioctls to create
a framebuffer.
It looks to me like it would be useful in the following cases:
a) in development drivers - we can always provide a shadowfb fallback.
b) libkms users - we can clean up libkms a lot and avoid linking
to libdrm_*.
c) plymouth via libkms is a lot easier.
Userspace bits would be just calls + mmaps. We could probably
mark these handles somehow as not being suitable for acceleartion
so as top stop people who are dumber than dumb.

This driver is one of the last users of the big kernel
lock, which is going away. All the hardware supported
by this driver also works with the newer i915 driver,
and recent X.org releases only work with that driver
anyway.

Hugh Dickins found that characters in xterm were going missing and oft
delayed. Being the curious type, he managed to associate this with the
new high-precision vblank patches; disabling these he found, restored
the orderliness of his characters.
The oddness begins when one realised that Hugh was not using vblanks at
all on his system (fvwm and some xterms). Instead, all he had to go on
were warning of a pipe underrun, curiously enough at around 60Hz. He
poked and found that in addition to the underrun warning, the hardware
was flagging the start of a new frame, a vblank, which in turn was
kicking off the pending vblank processing code.
There is little we can do for the underruns on Hugh's machine, a
Crestline [965GM], which must have its FIFO watermarks set to 8.
However, we do not need to process the vblank if we know that they are
disabled...

We pass in the array of ttm pages to be populated in the GART/MM
of the card (or AGP). Patch titled: "ttm: Utilize the DMA API for
pages that have TTM_PAGE_FLAG_DMA32 set." uses the DMA API to make
those pages have a proper DMA addresses (in the situation where
page_to_phys or virt_to_phys do not give use the DMA (bus) address).
Since we are using the DMA API on those pages, we should pass in the
DMA address to this function so it can save it in its proper fields
(later patches use it).

Iterate over the attached CRTCs, encoders and connectors and call the
supplied reset vfunc in order to reset any cached state back to unknown.
Useful after an invalidation event such as a GPU reset or resuming.

If you change the color depth via fbset or some other framebuffer aware
userland application struct fb_fix_screeninfo is not updated to this new
information. This patch fixes this issue. Also the function is changed to
just pass in struct drm_framebuffer so in the future we could use more
fields. I'm hoping some day fix->smem* could be set here :-)

The CMASK RAM is for colorbuffer compression (used in conjunction
with MSAA). Only one user (filp) can access it.
The CMASK RAM access is managed in the same way as Hyper-Z, but there is
a separate ioctl, because an app that uses MSAA does not necessarily
have to use zbuffering.

We need to track the state of the switch in drivers, so that after s/r
we don't resume the card we've explicitly switched off before. Also
don't allow a userspace open to occur if we've switched the gpu off.

The relative-to-general state default is useless as it means having to
rewrite the streaming kernels for each batch. Relative-to-surface is
more useful, as that stream usually needs to be rewritten for each
batch. And absolute addressing mode, vital if you start streaming
state, is also only available by adjusting the register...

Otherwise we can't really fix the abi-braindeadness of forcing
libva to manually wait for rendering when switching rings. Which
in turn makes implementing hw semaphores a pointless exercise
(at least for ironlake).

This patch attempts to fix up shortcomings with the current calling
sequences.
1) There's a fastpath where no locking occurs and only io_mem_reserved is
called to obtain needed info for mapping. The fastpath is set per
memory type manager.
2) If the fastpath is disabled, io_mem_reserve and io_mem_free will be exactly
balanced and not called recursively for the same struct ttm_mem_reg.
3) Optionally the driver can choose to enable a per memory type manager LRU
eviction mechanism that, when io_mem_reserve returns -EAGAIN will attempt
to kill user-space mappings of memory in that manager to free up needed
resources

The bo lock used only to protect the bo sync object members, and since it
is a per bo lock, fencing a buffer list will see a lot of locks and unlocks.
Replace it with a per-device lock that protects the sync object members on
*all* bos. Reading and setting these members will always be very quick, so
the risc of heavy lock contention is microscopic. Note that waiting for
sync objects will always take place outside of this lock.
The bo device fence lock will eventually be replaced with a seqlock /
rcu mechanism so we can determine that a bo is idle under a
rcu / read seqlock.
However this change will allow us to batch fencing and unreserving of
buffers with a minimal amount of locking.

spin lock / unlock if there is no contention.
Should improve cpu usage on SMP kernels.
