Ville Syrjälä 5efb3e2838 drm/i915/chv: Add cursor pipe offsets
Unsurprisingly the cursor C regiters are also at a weird offset on CHV.
Add more pipe offsets to handle them.

This also gets rid of most of the differences between the i9xx vs. ivb
cursor code. We can unify the remaining code as well, but I'll leave
that for another patch.

Imre Deak ddeea5b0c3 drm/i915: vlv: add runtime PM support
Add runtime PM support for VLV, but leave it disabled. The next patch
enables it.

The suspend/resume sequence used is based on [1] and [2]. In practice we
depend on the GT RC6 mechanism to save the HW context depending on the
render and media power wells. By the time we run the runtime suspend
callback the display side is also off and the HW context for that is
managed by the display power domain framework.

Besides the above there are Gunit registers that depend on a system-wide
power well. This power well goes off once the device enters any of the
S0i[R123] states. To handle this scenario, save/restore these Gunit
registers. Note that this is not the complete register set dictated by
[2], to remove some overhead, registers that are known not to be used are
ignored. Also some registers are fully setup by initialization functions
called during resume, these are not saved either. The list of registers
can be further reduced, see the TODO note in the code.

Imre Deak 0ab9cfeb5d drm/i915: propagate the error code from runtime PM callbacks
Atm, none of the RPM callbacks can fail, but the next patch adding
RPM support for VLV changes this, so prepare for it.

In case one of these callbacks return error RPM will get permanently
disabled until the error is explicitly cleared. In the future we could
add support for re-enabling it, for example after resetting the HW, but
for now - hopefully - we can live with the simpler solution.

Imre Deak 650ad970a3 drm/i915: vlv: factor out vlv_force_gfx_clock and check for pending force-off
This will be needed by the VLV runtime PM helpers too, so factor it out.

Also add a safety check for the case where the previous force-off is
still pending, since I'm not sure if Punit can handle a new setting
while the previous one hasn't settled yet.

Imre Deak 9486db611c drm/i915: reinit GT power save during resume
During runtime suspend there can be a last pending rps.work, so make
sure it's canceled. Note that in the runtime suspend callback we can't
get any RPS interrupts since it's called only after the GPU goes idle
and we set the minimum RPS frequency. The next possibility for an RPS
interrupt is only after getting an RPM ref (for example because of a new
GPU command) and calling the RPM resume callback.

Imre Deak 92b806d368 drm/i915: make runtime PM swizzling/ring_freq init platform independent
We need to re-init sizzling on all platforms so move it to the
platform independent runtime resume callback. The ring frequency reinit
is also needed everywhere except on VLV, but gen6_update_ring_freq()
will be a noop on VLV, so we can move this function too to platform
independent code.

Imre Deak b5478bcd5f drm/i915: make runtime PM interrupt enable/disable platform independent
We need to disable the interrupts for all platforms, so make the helpers
for this platform independent and call them from them platform
independent runtime suspend/resume callbacks.

On HSW/BDW this will move interrupt disabling/re-enabling at the
beginning/end of runtime suspend/resume respectively, but I don't see
any reason why this would cause a problem there. In any case this seems
to be the correct thing to do even on those platforms.

Imre Deak aeab0b5af7 drm/i915: disable runtime PM if RC6 is disabled
On VLV we depend on RC6 to save the GT render and media HW context
before going to the D3 state via RPM, so as a preparation for the
VLV RPM support (added in an upcoming patch) disable RPM if RC6 is
disabled.

There is probably a similar dependency on other platforms too, so for
safety require RC6 for those too. For these platforms (SNB, HSW, BDW)
this is then a possible fix.

At least on VLV but probably on other platforms too we depend on RC6
being enabled for RPM, so disable RPM until the delayed RC6 enabling
completes.

Imre Deak dc1d0136a4 drm/i915: move getting struct_mutex lower in the callstack during GPU reset
Getting struct_mutex around the whole intel_enable_gt_powersave()
function is not necessary, since it's only needed for the ILK path
therein.

This will make intel_enable_gt_powersave() useable on the RPM resume
path for >=GEN6 (added in an upcoming patch to reset the RPS state
during RPM resume), where we can't (and need not) get this mutex.

Zhao Yakui 845f74a701 drm/i915:Initialize the second BSD ring on BDW GT3 machine
Based on the hardware spec, the BDW GT3 machine has two independent
BSD ring that can be used to dispatch the video commands.
So just initialize it.

Chris Wilson 074c6adaf4 drm/i915: Mark device as wedged if we fail to resume
During module load, if we fail to initialise the rings, we abort the
load reporting EIO. However during resume, even though we report EIO as
we fail to reinitialize the ringbuffers, the resume continues and the
device is restored - albeit in a non-functional state. As we cannot
execute any commands on the GPU, it is effectively wedged, mark it so.

As we now preserve the ringbuffers across resume, this should prevent
UXA from falling into the trap of repeatedly sending invalid
batchbuffers and dropping all further rendering into /dev/null.

Dave Airlie 444c9a08bf Merge branch 'drm-init-cleanup' of git://people.freedesktop.org/~danvet/drm into drm-next
Next pull request, this time more of the drm de-midlayering work. The big
thing is that his patch series here removes everything from drm_bus except
the set_busid callback. Thierry has a few more patches on top of this to
make that one optional to.

With that we can ditch all the non-pci drm_bus implementations, which
Thierry has already done for the fake tegra host1x drm_bus.

Reviewed by Thierry, Laurent and David and now also survived some testing
on my intel boxes to make sure the irq fumble is fixed correctly ;-) The
last minute rebase was just to add the r-b tags from Thierry for the 2
patches I've redone.

Daniel Vetter bb0f1b5c16 drm: pass the irq explicitly to drm_irq_install
Unfortunately this requires a drm-wide change, and I didn't see a sane
way around that. Luckily it's fairly simple, we just need to inline
the respective get_irq implementation from either drm_pci.c or
drm_platform.c.

With that we can now also remove drm_dev_to_irq from drm_irq.c.

Daniel Vetter e090c53b21 drm/irq: remove cargo-culted locking from irq_install/uninstall
The dev->struct_mutex locking in drm_irq.c only protects
dev->irq_enabled. Which isn't really much at all and only prevents
especially nasty ums userspace from concurrently installing the
interrupt handling a few times. Or at least trying.

There are tons of unlocked readers of dev->irqs_enabled in the vblank
wait code (and by extension also in the pageflip code since that uses
the same vblank timestamp engine).

Real modesetting drivers should ensure that nothing can go haywire
with a sane setup teardown sequence. So we only really need this for
the drm_control ioctl, everywhere else this will just paper over
nastiness.

Note that drm/i915 is a bit specially due to the gem+ums combination.
So there we also need to properly protect the entervt and leavevt
ioctls. But it's definitely saner to do everything in one go than to
drop the lock in-between.

Finally there's the gpu reset code in drm/i915. That one's just race
(concurrent userspace calls to for vblank waits of pageflips could
spuriously fail). So wrap it up in with a nice comment since fixing
this is more involved.

Imre Deak 76c4b25008 drm/i915: move power domain init earlier during system resume
During resume the intel hda audio driver depends on the i915 driver
reinitializing the audio power domain. Since the order of calling the
i915 resume handler wrt. that of the audio driver is not guaranteed,
move the power domain reinitialization step to the resume_early
handler. This is guaranteed to run before the resume handler of any
other driver.

The power domain initialization in turn requires us to enable the i915
pci device first, so move that part earlier too.

Accordingly disabling of the i915 pci device should happen after the
audio suspend handler ran. So move the disabling later from the i915
resume handler to the resume_late handler.

Paulo Zanoni 97bea20794 drm/i915: add gen-specific runtime suspend/resume functions
We're adding runtime suspend support to more platforms, so organize
the code in a way that all a new platform needs to do is to add its
own gen-specific functions. Also rename the i915_ functions to intel_
to make it clear that it's the top level one, not something that just
runs on i915 platforms.

Paulo Zanoni a8a8bd547e drm/i915: make PC8 be part of runtime PM suspend/resume
Currently, when our driver becomes idle for i915.pc8_timeout (default:
5s) we enable PC8, so we save some power, but not everything we can.
Then, while PC8 is enabled, if we stay idle for more
autosuspend_delay_ms (default: 10s) we'll enter runtime PM and put the
graphics device in D3 state, saving even more power. The two features
are separate things with increasing levels of power savings, but if we
disable PC8 we'll never get into D3.

While from the modularity point of view it would be nice to keep these
features as separate, we have reasons to merge them:
 - We are not aware of anybody wanting a "PC8 without D3" environment.
 - If we keep both features as separate, we'll have to to test both
   PC8 and PC8+D3 code paths. We're already having a major pain to
   make QA do automated testing of just one thing, testing both paths
   will cost even more.
 - Only Haswell+ supports PC8, so if we want to add runtime PM support
   to, for example, IVB, we'll have to copy some code from the PC8
   feature to runtime PM, so merging both features as a single thing
   will make it easier for enabling runtime PM on other platforms.

This patch only does the very basic steps required to have PC8 and
runtime PM merged on a single feature: the next patches will take care
of cleaning up everything.

Chris Wilson 28d85cd367 drm/i915: Reset forcewake before suspend
Now that we regularly defer the forcewake dance to a timer func, it is
likely to fire after we disable the device during suspend. This
generates an oops as we detect inconsistency in the hardware state. So
before suspend, we want to complete the outstanding dance and generally

Jeff McGee dd0a1aa19b drm/i915: Restore rps/rc6 on reset
A check of rps/rc6 state after i915_reset determined that the ring
MAX_IDLE registers were returned to their hardware defaults and that
the GEN6_PMIMR register was set to mask all interrupts. This change
restores those values to their pre-reset states by re-initializing
rps/rc6 in i915_reset. A full re-initialization was opted for versus
a targeted set of restore operations for simplicity and maintain-
ability. Note that the re-initialization is not done for Ironlake,
due to a past comment that it causes problems.

Also updated the rps initialization sequence to preserve existing
min/max values in the case of a re-init. We assume the values were
validated upon being set and do not do further range checking. The
debugfs interface for changing min/max was updated with range
checking to ensure this condition (already present in sysfs
interface).

v2: fix rps logging to output hw_max and hw_min, not rps.max_delay
    and rps.min_delay which don't strictly represent hardware limits.

I left the UMS cruft untouched.

Jani Nikula d330a9530c drm/i915: move module parameters into a struct, in a new file
With 20+ module parameters, I think referring to them via a struct
improves clarity over just having a bunch of globals. While at it, move
the parameter initialization and definitions into a new file
i915_params.c to reduce clutter in i915_drv.c.

Apart from the ill-named i915_enable_rc6, i915_enable_fbc and
i915_enable_ppgtt parameters, for which we lose the "i915_" prefix
internally, the module parameters now look the same both on the kernel
command line and in code. For example, "i915.modeset".

The downsides of the change are losing static on a couple of variables
and not having the initialization and module_param_named() right next to
each other. On the other hand, all module parameters are now defined in
one place at i915_params.c. Plus you can do this to find all module
parameter references:

Daniel Vetter 754970ee1a drm/i915: Shuffle modeset reset handling around
Currently we're doing the reset handling a bit late, and we're doing
it both in the driver load code and on resume. This makes it unusable
for e.g. resetting the panel power sequence state like Paulo wants to.

Instead of adding yet another single-use callback shuffle things
around:
- Output handling code is responsible to reset/init all state on its
  own at driver load time.
- We call the reset functions much earlier, before we start using any
  of the modeset code.

Compared to Paulo's new ->resume callback the only difference in
placement is that ->reset is still called without dev->struct_mutex
held. Which is imo a feature.

Ben Widawsky 7e0d96bc03 drm/i915: Use multiple VMs -- the point of no return
As with processes which run on the CPU, the goal of multiple VMs is to
provide process isolation. Specific to GEN, there is also the ability to
map more objects per process (2GB each instead of 2Gb-2k total).

For the most part, all the pipes have been laid, and all we need to do
is remove asserts and actually start changing address spaces with the
context switch. Since prior to this we've converted the setting of the
page tables to a streamed version, this is quite easy.

One important thing to point out (since it'd been hotly contested) is
that with this patch, every context created will have it's own address
space (provided the HW can do it).

NOTE: I tried to make this commit as small as possible. I needed one
place where I could "turn everything on" and that is here. It could be
split into finer commits, but I didn't really see much point.

should now handle them all. So just set has_fbc=true for all such

Paulo Zanoni cd2e9e908a drm/i915: do adapter power state notification at runtime PM
Now that we are actually setting the device to the D3 state, we should
issue the notification.

The opregion spec says we should send the message before the adapter
is about to be placed in a lower power state, and after the adapter is
placed in a higher power state.

Jani originally wrote a similar patch for PC8, but then we discovered
that we were not really changing the PCI D states when
enabling/disabling PC8, so we had to postpone his patch.

Paulo Zanoni 8a1874559f drm/i915: add initial Runtime PM functions
This patch adds the initial infrastructure to allow a Runtime PM
implementation that sets the device to its D3 state. The patch just
adds the necessary callbacks and the initial infrastructure.

We still don't have any platform that actually uses this
infrastructure, we still don't call get/put in all the places we need
to, and we don't have any function to save/restore the state of the
registers. This is not a problem since no platform uses the code added
by this patch. We have a few people simultaneously working on runtime
PM, so this initial code could help everybody make their plans.

    - Remove useless pm_runtime_allow() call at init
    - Remove useless pm_runtime_mark_last_busy() call at get

Chris Wilson edd5b13313 drm/i915: Do not clobber config status after a forced restore of hw state
We call intel_modeset_setup_hw_state() along two paths, driver
load/resume and after a lid event notification. During initialisation of
the driver, it is imperative that we reset the config state. This
correctly sets up the initial connector statuses and prepares the
hardware for a thorough probing. However, during a lid event, we only
want to undo the damage caused by the bios by resetting our last known
mode. In this cirumstance, we do not want to clobber our desired state.

In order to try and keep sanity between the config state and our own
tracking, do the drm_mode_config_reset() first along the load/resume
paths before reading out the hw state and apply any definite known
corrections.

state to anything here: Imo connector->status should reflect what we
believe to be the true output connection state, whereas connector->encoder
reflects whether this connector is wired up to a pipe. And since we no
longer reject modeset on disconnected connectors and never nuked the pipe
if the connector gets disconnected there's no reason for that - such policy
is userspace's job.

Daniel Vetter b30324adaf drm/i915: Deprecated UMS support
It's been 5 years since kms support was merged and roughly 4 years
since UMS support was ripped out from userspace drivers.

Thus far it's not been a big burden to keep the ums paths alive, and
we've made some good progress in better separating it from the kms
code by sprinkling DRIVER_MODESET checks all over the place.

But now that the drm demidlayering is within reach this changes. I
want to make the driver loading code more robust using devres.c and
other cool tricks. But that doesn't work with ums due to the
shadow-attach trick. Which means we either
a) need to split out a complete ums codebase like radeon has
b) kill it for good.

The 2nd option is obviously much less work than the first, so I think
it's time to test the waters and see how many people out there still
use ums.

I've decided that silently failing to initialize the driver (and not
e.g. failing to load the module) is the right thing. That way we
should only get reports from users that actually care about some ums
features (like accelerated gl or support for secondary outputs).
Everyone else will just fall back to the vesa X driver.

For developers there's a small info level dmesg output.

The plan is to drop this Kconfig option after 3.16 (so gives us 2 full
releases) and then start killing code for real 2-3 releases
afterwards. That should be more than enough time for users to pipe up.

Of course if anyone does we need to revisit this plan and maybe go
with option a) above.

Also enable the KMS support by default in Kconfig and polish the help
texts a bit.

Thus far we've tried to carefully work around the fact that old
userspace relied on the AGP-backed legacy buffer mapping ioctls for a
bit too long. But it's really horribly, and now some new users for it
started to show up again:

This uses drmAgpSize to figure out the GTT size, which is both the
wrong thing to inquire and also might force us to keep this crap
around for another few years.

So I want to stop this particular zombie from raising ever again. Now
it's only been 4 years since XvMC was fixed for gen3, so a bit early
by the usual rules. But since Linus explicitly said that an ABI
breakage only counts if someone actually observes it I want to tempt
fate an accelarate the demise of AGP.

We probably need to wait 2-3 kernel releases with this shipping until
we go on a killing spree code-wise.

Ville Syrjälä 00fe639a56 drm/i915: Make AGP support optional
We only depend on the intel-gtt module for GTT frobbign on older gens.
The intel_agp module is optional, except for UMS and some old XvMC
userland on gen3. So make AGP support optional. As before, we will
fail the i915 init for UMS and gen3 KMS the same as before if
intel_agp isn't around.

intel-gtt.c is left with a somewhat ugly ifdef mess, but I'm going
to save that for a later cleaning.

At least my gen2 still works with the patch and CONFIG_AGP=n.

Imre Deak ddb642fb05 drm/i915: rename i915_init_power_well to init_power_domains_init
Similarly rename the other related functions in the power domain
interface.

Higher level driver code calling these functions knows only about power
domains, not the underlying power wells which may be different on
different platforms. Also these functions really init/cleanup/resume
power domains and only through that all related power wells, so rename
them accordingly.

Note that I left i915_{request,release}_power_well as is, since that
really changes the state only of a single power well (and is HSW
specific). It should also get a better name once we make it more
generic by controlling things through a new audio power domain.

Imre Deak baa707073b drm/i915: use power get/put instead of set for power on after init
Currently we make sure that all power domains are enabled during driver
init and turn off unneded ones only after the first modeset. Similarly
during suspend we enable all power domains, which will remain on through
the following resume until the first modeset.

This logic is supported by intel_set_power_well() in the power domain
framework. It would be nice to simplify the API, so that we only have
get/put functions and make it more explicit on the higher level how this
"power well on during init" logic works. This will make it also easier
if in the future we want to shorten the time the power wells are on.

For this add a new device private flag tracking whether we have the
power wells on because of init/suspend and use only
intel_display_power_get()/put(). As nothing else uses
intel_set_power_well() we can remove it.

Ben Widawsky 828c79087c drm/i915: Disable GGTT PTEs on GEN6+ suspend
Once the machine gets to a certain point in the suspend process, we
expect the GPU to be idle. If it is not, we might corrupt memory.
Empirically (with an early version of this patch) we have seen this is
not the case. We cannot currently explain why the latent GPU writes
occur.

In the technical sense, this patch is a workaround in that we have an
issue we can't explain, and the patch indirectly solves the issue.
However, it's really better than a workaround because we understand why
it works, and it really should be a safe thing to do in all cases.

The noticeable effect other than the debug messages would be an increase
in the suspend time. I have not measure how expensive it actually is.

I think it would be good to spend further time to root cause why we're
seeing these latent writes, but it shouldn't preclude preventing the
fallout.

NOTE: It should be safe (and makes some sense IMO) to also keep the
VALID bit unset on resume when we clear_range(). I've opted not to do
this as properly clearing those bits at some later point would be extra
work.

Chris Wilson 45c5f2022c drm/i915: Disable all GEM timers and work on unload
We have two once very similar functions, i915_gpu_idle() and
i915_gem_idle(). The former is used as the lower level operation to
flush work on the GPU, whereas the latter is the high level interface to
flush the GEM bookkeeping in addition to flushing the GPU. As such
i915_gem_idle() also clears out the request and activity lists and
cancels the delayed work. This is what we need for unloading the driver,
unfortunately we called i915_gpu_idle() instead.

In the process, make sure that when cancelling the delayed work and
timer, which is synchronous, that we do not hold any locks to prevent a
deadlock if the work item is already waiting upon the mutex. This
requires us to push the mutex down from the caller to i915_gem_idle().

Ben Widawsky 3d57e5bd12 drm/i915: Do a fuller init after reset
I had this lying around from he original PPGTT series, and thought we
might try to get it in by itself.

It's convenient to just call i915_gem_init_hw at reset because we'll be
adding new things to that function, and having just one function to call
instead of reimplementing it in two places is nice.

In order to accommodate we cleanup ringbuffers in order to bring them
back up cleanly. Optionally, we could also teardown/re initialize the
default context but this was causing some problems on reset which I
wasn't able to fully debug, and is unnecessary with the previous context
init/enable split.

This essentially reverts:

Ben Widawsky ab484f8fd6 drm/i915: Remove gen specific checks in MMIO
Now that MMIO has been split up into gen specific functions it is
obvious when HAS_FPGA_DBG_UNCLAIMED, HAS_FORCE_WAKE are needed. As such,
we can remove this extraneous condition.

As a result of this, as well as previously existing function pointers
for forcewake, we no longer need the has_force_wake member in the device
specific data structure.

David Herrmann 16eb5f4379 drm: kill ->gem_init_object() and friends
All drivers embed gem-objects into their own buffer objects. There is no
reason to keep drm_gem_object_alloc(), gem->driver_private and
->gem_init_object() anymore.

New drivers are highly encouraged to do the same. There is no benefit in
allocating gem-objects separately.

Mika Kuoppala be62acb4cc drm/i915: ban badly behaving contexts
Now when we have mechanism in place to track which context
was guilty of hanging the gpu, it is possible to punish
for bad behaviour.

If context has recently submitted a faulty batchbuffers guilty of
gpu hang and submits another batch which hangs gpu in quick
succession, ban it permanently. If ctx is banned, no more
batchbuffers will be queued for execution.

There is no need for global wedge machinery anymore and
it would be unwise to wedge the whole gpu if we have multiple
hanging batches queued for execution. Instead just ban
the guilty ones and carry on.

Ben Widawsky b833d68599 drm/i915: Restore the preliminary HW check.
We still maintain code internally that cares about preliminary support.
Leaving the check here doesn't hurt anyone, and should keep things more
in line.

This time around, stick the info in the intel_info structure, and also

Paulo Zanoni 9005874532 drm/i915: add i915.pc8_timeout function
We currently only enter PC8+ after all its required conditions are
met, there's no rendering, and we stay like that for at least 5
seconds.

I chose "5 seconds" because this value is conservative and won't make
us enter/leave PC8+ thousands of times after the screen is off: some
desktop environments have applications that wake up and do rendering
every 1-3 seconds, even when the screen is off and the machine is
completely idle.

But when I was testing my PC8+ patches I set the default value to
100ms so I could use the bad-behaving desktop environments to
stress-test my patches. I also thought it would be a good idea to ask
our power management team to test different values, but I'm pretty
sure they would ask me for an easy way to change the timeout. So to
help these 2 cases I decided to create an option that would make it
easier to change the default value. I also expect people making
specific products that use our driver could try to find the perfect
timeout for them.

Anyway, fixing the bad-behaving applications will always lead to
better power savings than just changing the timeout value: you need to
stop waking the Kernel, not quickly put it back to sleep again after
you wake it for nothing. Bad sleep leads to bad mood!

Paulo Zanoni c67a470b1d drm/i915: allow package C8+ states on Haswell (disabled)
This patch allows PC8+ states on Haswell. These states can only be
reached when all the display outputs are disabled, and they allow some
more power savings.

The fact that the graphics device is allowing PC8+ doesn't mean that
the machine will actually enter PC8+: all the other devices also need
to allow PC8+.

For now this option is disabled by default. You need i915.allow_pc8=1
if you want it.

This patch adds a big comment inside i915_drv.h explaining how it
works and how it tracks things. Read it.

    - Use the new functions to enable/disable GTIMR and GEN6_PMIMR
    - Rename almost all variables and functions to names suggested by

    - More WARNs on the IRQ handling code

Daniel Vetter 281856477c drm: rip out drm_core_has_MTRR checks
The new arch_phys_wc_add/del functions do the right thing both with
and without MTRR support in the kernel. So we can drop these
additional checks.

David Herrmann suggest to also kill the DRIVER_USE_MTRR flag since
it's now unused, which spurred me to do a bit a better audit of the

Cool, thanks a lot for stitching together the list of drivers to look
at. So for real KMS drivers it's the drives responsibility to add an
mtrr if it needs one. nouvea, radeon, mgag200, i915 and vmwgfx do that
already. Somehow the savage driver also ends up doing that, I have no
idea why.

Note that gma500 as a pure KMS driver doesn't need MTRR setup since
the platforms that it supports all support PAT. So no MTRRs needed to
get wc iomappings.

The mtrr support in the drm core is all for legacy mappings of garts,
framebuffers and registers. All legacy drivers set the USE_MTRR flag,
so we're good there.

All in all I think we can really just ditch this

Daniel Vetter b0e898ac55 drm: remove FASYNC support
So I've stumbled over drm_fasync and wondered what it does. Digging
that up is quite a story.

First I've had to read up on what this does and ended up being rather
bewildered why peopled loved signals so much back in the days that
they've created SIGIO just for that ...

Then I wondered how this ever works, and what that strange "No-op."
comment right above it should mean. After all calling the core fasync
helper is pretty obviously not a noop. After reading through the
kernels FASYNC implementation I've noticed that signals are only sent
out to the processes attached with FASYNC by calling kill_fasync.

No merged drm driver has ever done that.

After more digging I've found out that the only driver that ever used
this is the so called GAMMA driver. I've frankly never heard of such a
gpu brand ever before. Now FASYNC seems to not have been the only bad
thing with that driver, since Dave Airlie removed it from the drm
driver with prejudice:

Daniel Vetter 43387b37fa drm/gem: create drm_gem_dumb_destroy
All the gem based kms drivers really want the same function to
destroy a dumb framebuffer backing storage object.

So give it to them and roll it out in all drivers.

This still leaves the option open for kms drivers which don't use GEM
for backing storage, but it does decently simplify matters for gem
drivers.

Chris Wilson 907b28c56e drm/i915: Colocate all GT access routines in the same file
Currently, the register access code is split between i915_drv.c and
intel_pm.c. It only bares a superficial resemblance to the reset of the
powermanagement code, so move it all into its own file. This is to ease
further patches to enforce serialised register access.

the term used by the hardware design (and bspec) for all functions

unintentionally also changed the init sequence ordering between
gt_init and gt_reset - we need to reset BIOS damage like leftover
forcewake references before we run our own code. Otherwise we can get
nasty dmesg noise like

[drm:__gen6_gt_force_wake_mt_get] *ERROR* Timed out waiting for forcewake old ack to clear.

again. Since _reset suggests that we first need to have stuff
initialized (which isn't the case here) call it sanitze instead.

While at it also block out the rps disable introduced by the above
commit on ilk: We don't have any knowledge of ilk rps being broken in
similar ways. And the disable functions uses the default hw state
which is only read out when we're enabling rps. So essentially we've
been writing random grabage into that register.

Chris Wilson a7cd1b8fea drm/i915: Serialize almost all register access
In theory, the different register blocks were meant to be only ever
touched when holding either the struct_mutex, mode_config.lock or even a
specific localised lock. This does not seem to be the case, and the
hardware reacts extremely badly if we attempt to concurrently access two
registers within the same cacheline.

The HSD suggests that we only need to do this workaround for display
range registers. However, upon review we need to serialize the multiple
stages in our register write functions - if only for preemption
protection.

Irrespective of the hardware requirements, the current io functions are
a little too loose with respect to the combination of pre- and
post-condition testing that we do in conjunction with the actual io. As
a result, we may be pre-empted and generate both false-postive and
false-negative errors.

Note well that this is a "90%" solution, there remains a few direct
users of ioread/iowrite which will be fixed up in the next few patches.
Since they are more invasive and that this simple change will prevent
almost all lockups on Haswell, we kept this patch simple to facilitate
backporting to stable.

Daniel Vetter db1b76ca6a drm/i915: don't frob mm.suspended when not using ums
In kernel modeset driver mode we're in full control of the chip,
always. So there's no need at all to set mm.suspended in
i915_gem_idle. Hence move that out into the leavevt ioctl. Since
i915_gem_idle doesn't suspend gem any more we can also drop the
re-enabling for KMS in the thaw function.

Also clean up the handling of mm.suspend at driver load by coalescing
all the assignments.

Stumbled over while reading through our resume code for unrelated
reasons.

v2: Shovel mm.suspended into the (newly created) ums dungeon as
suggested by Chris Wilson. The plan is that once we've completely
stopped relying on the register save/restore code we could shovel even
that in there.

v3: Improve the locking for the entervt/leavevt ioctls a bit by moving
the dev->struct_mutex locking outside of i915_gem_idle. Also don't
clear dev_priv->ums.mm_suspended for the kms case, we allocate it with
kzalloc. Both suggested by Chris Wilson.

Daniel Vetter 36c0cc616e drm/i915: clean up media reset on gm45
Originally I've thought that this fixes up the reset issues on my
gm45, but that was just a red herring due to b0rked testing.

Still I much prefer writing the right values (all other fields are
reserved) instead of potentially dragging gunk around. Hence also
clear the register to 0 after a reset.

Note that Cspec is a bit confused and doesn't explicitly say that all
the other bits in this register are "reserved, mbz" like usually.
Instead they're marked as "r/o, default value = 0" which semantically
amounts to the same thing.

v2: Stop claiming this fixes anything and return 0 if successful
instead of stack garbage.

v3: Pimp the commit message to explain exactly why I think the docs
allow us to ditch the rmw cycle, spurred by a discussion with Chris.

Daniel Vetter e72f9fbf99 drm/i915: s/pch_pll/shared_dpll/
For fastboot we need some support to read out the sharing state of
plls, at least for platforms where they can be shared (or freely
assigned at least). Now for ivb we already have pretty extensive
infrastructure for tracking pch plls, and it took us an aweful lot of
tries to get that remotely right. Note that hsw could also share plls,
but even now they're already freely assignable. So we need this on
more than just ivb.

So on top of the usual fastboot fun pll sharing seems to be an
additional step up in fragility. Hence a common infrastructure for all
shared/freely assignable display plls seems to be in order.

The plan is to have a bit of dpll hw state readout code, which can be
used individually, but also to fill in the pipe config. The hw state
cross check code will then use that information to make sure that
after every modeset every pipe still is connected to a pll which still
has the correct configuration - a lot of the pch pll sharing bugs
where due to incorrect sharing.

We start this endeavour with a simple s/pch_pll/shared_dpll/ rename
job.

Paulo Zanoni 3c4ca58c12 drm/i915: add enable_ips module option
IPS is still enabled by default. Feature requested by the power
management team.

This should also help testing the feature on some early pre-production
hardware where there were relationship problems between IPS and PSR.

v3: Check i915_enable_ips at compute_config, not supports_ips, so the
    kernel parameter will be ignored at haswell_get_pipe_config.

Chris Wilson 2e7c8ee7a6 drm/i915: Avoid promoting a simulated hang to 'wedged'
It appears that a beneficial side-effect of Mika's more accurate hangman
work is to speed up hang detection and execution. This exposes a bug in
the reset code that then treats repeated simulated hangs as an
indication that the machine is wedged. Jiggle the code around so that we
only do the simulation processing from the hangcheck and avoid confusing
it with a real hang.

Rodrigo Vivi 1c98b4871c drm/i915: Adding more reserved PCI IDs for Haswell.
At DDX commit Chris mentioned the tendency we have of finding out more
PCI IDs only when users report. So Let's add all new reserved Haswell IDs.

This patch also fix GT3 names. I'no not sending in separated patche because
names are only in few comments and not in variable names.

This patch introduce Frame Buffer Compression (FBC) support for IVB,
without enabling it by default.
It adds a new function gen7_enable_fbc to avoid getting
ironlake_enable_fbc messed with many IS_IVYBRIDGE checks.

Paulo Zanoni 2124b72e62 drm/i915: don't disable the power well yet
We're still not 100% ready to disable the power well, so don't disable
it for now. When we disable it we break the audio driver (because some
of the audio registers are on the power well) and machines with eDP on
port D (because it doesn't use TRANSCODER_EDP).

Also, instead of just reverting the code, add a Kernel option to let
us disable it if we want. This will allow us to keep developing and
testing the feature while it's not enabled.

i915 driver needs to do modeset when
1. system resumes from sleep
2. lid is opened

In PM_SUSPEND_MEM state, all the GPEs are cleared when system resumes,
thus it is the i915_resume code does the modeset rather than intel_lid_notify().

But in PM_SUSPEND_FREEZE state, this will be broken because
system is still responsive to the lid events.
1. When we close the lid in Freeze state, intel_lid_notify() sets modeset_on_lid.
2. When we reopen the lid, intel_lid_notify() will do a modeset,
   before the system is resumed.

three different modeset flags are introduced in this patch
MODESET_ON_LID_OPEN: do modeset on next lid open event
MODESET_DONE:  modeset already done
MODESET_SUSPENDED:  suspended, only do modeset when system is resumed

In this way,
1. when lid is closed, MODESET_ON_LID_OPEN is set so that
   we'll do modeset on next lid open event.
2. when lid is opened, MODESET_DONE is set
   so that duplicate lid open events will be ignored.
3. when system suspends, MODESET_SUSPENDED is set.
   In this case, we will not do modeset on any lid events.

Plus, locking mechanism is also introduced to avoid racing.

Greg Kroah-Hartman 56550d94cb Drivers: gpu: remove __dev* attributes.
CONFIG_HOTPLUG is going away as an option.  As a result, the __dev*
markings need to be removed.

This change removes the use of __devinit, __devexit_p, and __devexit
from these drivers.

Wrongly set-up interrupts also lead to broken hw-based load-detection
on at least GM45, resulting in ghost VGA/TV-out outputs.

To fix this, delay the hotplug register setup until after all outputs
are set up, by moving it into a new dev_priv->display.hpd_irq_callback.
We might also move the PCH_SPLIT platforms to such a setup eventually.

Another funny part is that we need to delay the fbdev initial config
probing until after the hpd regs are setup, for otherwise it'll detect
ghost outputs. But we can only enable the hpd interrupt handling
itself (and the output polling) _after_ that initial scan, due to
massive locking brain-damage in the fbdev setup code. Add a big
comment to explain this cute little dragon lair.

v2: Encapsulate all the fbdev handling by wrapping the move call into
intel_fbdev_initial_config in intel_fb.c. Requested by Chris Wilson.

Paulo Zanoni dde86e2db5 drm/i915: add lpt_init_pch_refclk
We need this code to init the PCH SSC refclk and the FDI registers.
The BIOS does this too and that's why VGA worked before this patch,
until you tried to suspend the machine...

This patch implements the "Sequence to enable CLKOUT_DP for FDI usage
and configure PCH FDI/IO" from our documentation.

- Add a comment that we don't need to bother about the ULT special
  case Damien noticed, since ULT won't have VGA.

We don't check if the "unclaimed register" bit is set before we call
writel, so if it was already set before, we might print a misleading
message about "unclaimed write" on the wrong register.

Communicating via the mailbox registers with the PCU can take quite
awhile.  And updating the ring frequency or enabling turbo is not
something that needs to happen synchronously, so take it out of our init
and resume paths to speed things up (~200ms on my T420).

Jesse Barnes 073f34d9d4 drm/i915: don't block resume on fb console resume v2
The console lock can be contended, so rather than prevent other drivers
after us from being held up, queue the console suspend into the global
work queue that can happen anytime.  I've measured this to take around
200ms on my T420.  Combined with the ring freq/turbo change, we should
save almost 1/2 a second on resume.

Chris Wilson 16995a9fe1 drm/i915: Clear FORCEWAKE when taking over from BIOS
Some BIOSes may forcibly suspend RC6 during their operation which
trigger a warning as we find the hardware in a perplexing state upon
first use. So far that appears to be the worst symptom as fortuituously
we use the same values as the BIOS for programming the FORCEWAKE register.

Daniel Vetter 2e9388923e drm/i915/crt: explicitly set up HOTPLUG_BITS on resume
... instead of relying on the register save/restore madness to do this.

To extract a bit of code call drm_mode_config_reset both on resume
and boot-up and move the hw state frobbing from the crt_init to the
->reset callback. The crt connector is the only one with a ->reset
callback, hence we can easily do this.

Rodrigo Vivi 0a3af26864 drm/i915: Insert i915_preliminary_hw_support variable.
On the worst scenario, users with new hardwares and old kernel from
enabling times can get black screens.  So, from now on, this
perliminary_hw_support module parameter shall be used by all upcoming
platforms that are still under enabling. The second option would be to
merge the pci ids after basic modeset works, but that makes testing
and development while bringing up hw a rather tedious afair.

Although it is uncomfortable for developers use this extra variable it
brings more stability for end users.

Remove redundant DRM UAPI header #inclusions from drivers/gpu/.

Remove redundant #inclusions of core DRM UAPI headers (drm.h, drm_mode.h and
drm_sarea.h).  They are now #included via drmP.h and drm_crtc.h via a preceding
patch.

Without this patch and the patch to make include the UAPI headers from the core
headers, after the UAPI split, the DRM C sources cannot find these UAPI headers
because the DRM code relies on specific -I flags to make #include "..."  work
on headers in include/drm/ - but that does not work after the UAPI split without
adding more -I flags.

Daniel Vetter a1ceb67751 Merge the modeset-rework, basic conversion into drm-intel-next
As a quick reference I'll detail the motivation and design of the new code a
bit here (mostly stitched together from patchbomb announcements and commits
introducing the new concepts).

The crtc helper code has the fundamental assumption that encoders and crtcs can
be enabled/disabled in any order, as long as we take care of depencies (which
means that enabled encoders need an enabled crtc to feed them data,
essentially).

Our hw works differently. We already have tons of ugly cases where crtc code
enables encoder hw (or encoder->mode_set enables stuff that should only be
enabled in enocder->commit) to work around these issues. But on the disable
side we can't pull off similar tricks - there we actually need to rework the
modeset sequence that controls all this. And this is also the real motivation
why I've finally undertaken this rewrite: eDP on my shiny new Ivybridge
Ultrabook is broken, and it's broken due to the wrong disable sequence ...

The new code introduces a few interfaces and concepts:

- Add new encoder->enable/disable functions which are directly called from the
crtc->enable/disable function. This ensures that the encoder's can be
enabled/disabled at a very specific in the modeset sequence, controlled by our
platform specific code (instead of the crtc helper code calling them at a time
it deems convenient).

- Rework the dpms code - our code has mostly 1:1 connector:encoder mappings and
does support cloning on only a few encoders, so we can simplify things quite a
bit.

- Also only ever disable/enable the entire output pipeline. This ensures that
we obey the right sequence of enabling/disabling things, trying to be clever
here mostly just complicates the code and results in bugs. For cloneable
encoders this requires a bit of special handling to ensure that outputs can
still be disabled individually, but it simplifies the common case.

- Add infrastructure to read out the current hw state. No amount of careful
ordering will help us if we brick the hw on the initial modeset setup. Which
could happen if we just randomly disable things, oblivious to the state set up
by the bios. Hence we need to be able to read that out. As a benefit, we grow a
few generic functions useful to cross-check our modeset code with actual hw
state.

With all this in place, we can copy&paste the crtc helper code into the
drm/i915 driver and start to rework it:

- As detailed above, the new code only disables/enables an entire output pipe.
As a preparation for global mode-changes (e.g. reassigning shared resources) it
keeps track of which pipes need to be touched by a set of bitmasks.

- To ensure that we correctly disable the current display pipes, we need to
know the currently active connector/encoder/crtc linking. The old crtc helper
simply overwrote these links with the new setup, the new code stages the new
links in ->new_* pointers. Those get commited to the real linking pointers once
the old output configuration has been torn down, before the ->mode_set
callbacks are called.

- Finally the code adds tons of self-consistency checks by employing the new hw
state readout functions to cross-check the actual hw state with what the
datastructure think it should be. These checks are done both after every
modeset and after the hw state has been read out and sanitized at boot/resume
time. All these checks greatly helped in tracking down regressions and bugs in
the new code.

With this new basis, a lot of cleanups and improvements to the code are now
possible (besides the DP fixes that ultimately made me write this), but not yet
done:

- I think we should create struct intel_mode and use it as the adjusted mode
everywhere to store little pieces like needs_tvclock, pipe dithering values or
dp link parameters. That would still be a layering violation, but at least we
wouldn't need to recompute these kinds of things in intel_display.c. Especially
the port bpc computation needed for selecting the pipe bpc and dithering
settings in intel_display.c is rather gross.

- In a related rework we could implement ->mode_valid in terms of ->mode_fixup
in a generic way - I've hunted down too many bugs where ->mode_valid did the
right thing, but ->mode_fixup didn't. Or vice versa, resulting in funny bugs
for user-supplied modes.

- Ditch the idea to rework the hdp handling in the common crtc helper code and
just move things to i915.ko. Which would rid us of the ->detect crtc helper
dependencies.

- LVDS wire pair and pll enabling is all done in the crtc->mode_set function
currently. We should be able to move this to the crtc_enable callbacks (or in
the case of the LVDS wire pair enabling, into some encoder callback).

Last, but not least, this new code should also help in enabling a few neat
features: The hw state readout code prepares (but there are still big pieces
missing) for fastboot, i.e. avoiding the inital modeset at boot-up and just
taking over the configuration left behind by the bios. We also should be able
to extend the configuration checks in the beginning of the modeset sequence and
make better decisions about shared resources (which is the entire point behind
the atomic/global modeset ioctl).

Daniel Vetter 9dc10f37e3 drm/i915: no longer call drm_helper_resume_force_mode
Since this only calls crtc helper functions, of which a shocking
amount are NULL.

Now the curious thing is how the new modeset code worked with this
function call still present:

Thanks to the hw state readout and the suspend fixes to properly
quiescent the register state, nothing is actually enabled at resume
(if the bios doesn't set up anything). Which means resume_force_mode
doesn't actually do anything and hence nothing blows up at resume
time.

The other reason things do work is that the fbcon layer has it's own
resume notifier callback, which restores the mode. And thanks to the
force vt switch at suspend/resume, that then forces X to restore it's
own mode.

Hence everything still worked (as long as the bios doesn't enable
anything). And we can just kill the call to resume_force_mode.

The upside of both this patch and the preceeding patch to quiescent
the modeset state is that our resume path is much simpler:
- We now longer restore bogus register values (which most often would
  enable the backlight a bit and a few ports), causing flickering.
- We now longer call resume_force_mode to restore a mode that the
  fbcon layer would overwrite right away anyway.

We need this to avoid confusing the hw state readout code with the cpt
pch plls at resume time: We'd read the new pipe state (which is
disabled), but still believe that we have a life pll connected to that
pipe (from before the suspend). Hence properly disable pipes to clear
out all the residual state.

This has the neat side-effect that we don't enable ports prematurely
by restoring bogus state from the saved register values.

Daniel Vetter 2492935248 drm/i915: read out the modeset hw state at load and resume time
... instead of resetting a few things and hoping that this will work
out.

To properly disable the output pipelines at the initial modeset after
resume or boot up we need to have an accurate picture of which outputs
are enabled and connected to which crtcs. Otherwise we risk disabling
things at the wrong time, which can lead to hangs (or at least royally
confused panels), both requiring a walk to the reset button to fix.

Hence read out the hw state with the freshly introduce get_hw_state
functions and then sanitize it afterwards.

For a full modeset readout (which would allow us to avoid the initial
modeset at boot up) a few things are still missing:
- Reading out the mode from the pipe, especially the dotclock
  computation is quite some fun.
- Reading out the parameters for the stolen memory framebuffer and
  wrapping it up.
- Reading out the pch pll connections - luckily the disable code
  simply bails out if the crtc doesn't have a pch pll attached (even
  for configurations that would need one).

This patch here turned up tons of smelly stuff around resume: We
restore tons of register in seemingly random way (well, not quite, but
we're not too careful either), which leaves the hw in a rather
ill-defined state: E.g. the port registers are sometimes
unconditionally restore (lvds, crt), leaving us with an active
encoder/connector but no active pipe connected to it. Luckily the hw
state sanitizer detects this madness and fixes things up a bit.

v2: When checking whether an encoder with active connectors has a crtc
wire up to it, check for both the crtc _and_ it's active state.

Ben Widawsky c0c7babc48 drm/i915: add register read IOCTL
The interface's immediate purpose is to do synchronous timestamp queries
as required by GL_TIMESTAMP. The GPU has a register for reading the
timestamp but because that would normally require root access through
libpciaccess, the IOCTL can provide this service instead.

Currently the implementation whitelists only the render ring timestamp
register, because that is the only thing we need to expose at this time.
