- Support instruction latency in 'perf report', with both memory latency
(weight) and instruction latency information, users can locate expensive load
instructions and understand time spent in different stages.
- Extend 'perf c2c' to display the number of loads which were blocked by data
or address conflict.
- Add 'perf stat' support for L2 topdown events in systems such as Intel's
Sapphire rapids server.
- Add support for PERF_SAMPLE_CODE_PAGE_SIZE in various tools, as a sort key, for instance:
perf report --stdio --sort=comm,symbol,code_page_size
- New 'perf daemon' command to run long running sessions while providing a way to control
the enablement of events without restarting a traditional 'perf record' session.
- Enable counting events for BPF programs in 'perf stat' just like for other
targets (tid, cgroup, cpu, etc), e.g.:
# perf stat -e ref-cycles,cycles -b 254 -I 1000
1.487903822 115,200 ref-cycles
1.487903822 86,012 cycles
2.489147029 80,560 ref-cycles
2.489147029 73,784 cycles
^C#
The example above counts 'cycles' and 'ref-cycles' of BPF program of id 254.
It is similar to bpftool-prog-profile command, but more flexible.
- Support the new layout for PERF_RECORD_MMAP2 to carry the DSO build-id using infrastructure
generalised from the eBPF subsystem, removing the need for traversing the perf.data file
to collect build-ids at the end of 'perf record' sessions and helping with long running
sessions where binaries can get replaced in updates, leading to possible mis-resolution
of symbols.

KVM code assumes single DAWR everywhere. Add code to support 2nd DAWR.
DAWR is a hypervisor resource and thus H_SET_MODE hcall is used to set/
unset it. Introduce new case H_SET_MODE_RESOURCE_SET_DAWR1 for 2nd DAWR.
Also, KVM will support 2nd DAWR only if CPU_FTR_DAWR1 is set.

To enable presenting of Performance Monitor Counter Registers (PMC1 to
PMC6) as part of extended regsiters, this patch adds these to
sample_reg_mask in the tool side (to use with -I? option).
Simplified the PERF_REG_PMU_MASK_300/31 definition. Excluded the
unsupported SPRs (MMCR3, SIER2, SIER3) from extended mask value for
CPU_FTR_ARCH_300.

New features:
- Introduce controlling how 'perf stat' and 'perf record' works via a
control file descriptor, allowing starting with events configured but
disabled until commands are received via the control file descriptor.
This allows, for instance for tools such as Intel VTune to make further
use of perf as its Linux platform driver.
- Improve 'perf record' to to register in a perf.data file header the clockid
used to help later correlate things like syslog files and perf events
recorded.
- Add basic syscall and find_next_bit benchmarks to 'perf bench'.
- Allow using computed metrics in calculating other metrics. For instance:
{
.metric_expr = "l2_rqsts.demand_data_rd_hit + l2_rqsts.pf_hit + l2_rqsts.rfo_hit",
.metric_name = "DCache_L2_All_Hits",
},
{
.metric_expr = "max(l2_rqsts.all_demand_data_rd - l2_rqsts.demand_data_rd_hit, 0) + l2_rqsts.pf_miss + l2_rqsts.rfo_miss",
.metric_name = "DCache_L2_All_Miss",
},
{
.metric_expr = "dcache_l2_all_hits + dcache_l2_all_miss",
.metric_name = "DCache_L2_All",
}
- Add suport for 'd_ratio', '>' and '<' operators to the expression resolver used
in calculating metrics in 'perf stat'.
Support for new kernel features:
- Support TEXT_POKE and KSYMBOL_TYPE_OOL perf metadata events to cope with
things like ftrace, trampolines, i.e. changes in the kernel text that gets
in the way of properly decoding Intel PT hardware traces, for instance.
Intel PT:
- Add various knobs to reduce the volume of Intel PT traces by reducing the
level of details such as decoding just some types of packets (e.g., FUP/TIP,
PSB+), also filtering by time range.
- Add new itrace options (log flags to the 'd' option, error flags to the 'e'
one, etc), controlling how Intel PT is transformed into perf events, document
some missing options (e.g., how to synthesize callchains).
BPF:
- Properly report BPF errors when parsing events.
- Do not setup side-band events if LIBBPF is not linked, fixing a segfault.
Libraries:
- Improvements on the libtraceevent plugin mechanism.
- Improve libtracevent support for KVM trace events SVM exit reasons.
- Add a libtracevent plugins for decoding syscalls/sys_enter_futex and for tlb_flush.
- Ensure sample_period is set libpfm4 events in 'perf test'.
- Fixup libperf namespacing, to make sure what is in libperf has the perf_
namespace while what is now only in tools/perf/ doesn't use that prefix.
Arch specific:
- Improve the testing of vendor events and metrics in 'perf test'.
- Allow no ARM CoreSight hardware tracer sink to be specified on command line.
- Fix arm_spe_x recording when mixed with other perf events.
- Add s390 idle functions 'psw_idle' and 'psw_idle_exit' to list of idle symbols.
- List kernel supplied event aliases for arm64 in 'perf list'.
- Add support for extended register capability in PowerPC 9 and 10.
- Added nest IMC power9 metric events.
Miscellaneous:
- No need to setup sample_regs_intr/sample_regs_user for dummy events.
- Update various copies of kernel headers, some causing perf to handle new
syscalls, MSRs, etc.
- Improve usage of flex and yacc, enabling warnings and addressing the fallout.
- Add missing '--output' option to 'perf kmem' so that it can pass it along to 'perf record'.
- 'perf probe' fixes related to adding multiple probes on the same address for
the same event.
- Make 'perf probe' warn if the target function is a GNU indirect function.
- Remove //anon mmap events from 'perf inject jit' to fix supporting both using
ELF files for generated functions and the perf-PID.map approaches.

Test results:
The first ones are container based builds of tools/perf with and without libelf
support. Where clang is available, it is also used to build perf with/without
libelf, and building with LIBCLANGLLVM=1 (built-in clang) with gcc and clang
when clang and its devel libraries are installed.
The objtool and samples/bpf/ builds are disabled now that I'm switching from
using the sources in a local volume to fetching them from a http server to
build it inside the container, to make it easier to build in a container cluster.
Those will come back later.
Several are cross builds, the ones with -x-ARCH and the android one, and those
may not have all the features built, due to lack of multi-arch devel packages,
available and being used so far on just a few, like
debian:experimental-x-{arm64,mipsel}.
The 'perf test' one will perform a variety of tests exercising
tools/perf/util/, tools/lib/{bpf,traceevent,etc}, as well as run perf commands
with a variety of command line event specifications to then intercept the
sys_perf_event syscall to check that the perf_event_attr fields are set up as
expected, among a variety of other unit tests.
Then there is the 'make -C tools/perf build-test' ones, that build tools/perf/
with a variety of feature sets, exercising the build with an incomplete set of
features as well as with a complete one. It is planned to have it run on each
of the containers mentioned above, using some container orchestration
infrastructure. Get in contact if interested in helping having this in place.
fedora:rawhide with python3 and gcc 10.1.1-2 is failing (10.1.1-1 on fedora:32
works), fixes will be provided soon.
clearlinux:latest is failing on libbpf, there is a fix already in the bpf tree.
The ones failing when linking with libllvm, not the default build, were
restricted to clang-9/llvm-9, working with anything before or after, e.g.,
using clang-8 on ubuntu:19.10 and clang-11 on debian:experimental fixed the
build in those environments.

Merge tag 'perf-tools-2020-08-10' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/acme/linux
Pull perf tools updates from Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo:
"New features:
- Introduce controlling how 'perf stat' and 'perf record' works via a
control file descriptor, allowing starting with events configured
but disabled until commands are received via the control file
descriptor. This allows, for instance for tools such as Intel VTune
to make further use of perf as its Linux platform driver.
- Improve 'perf record' to to register in a perf.data file header the
clockid used to help later correlate things like syslog files and
perf events recorded.
- Add basic syscall and find_next_bit benchmarks to 'perf bench'.
- Allow using computed metrics in calculating other metrics. For
instance:
{
.metric_expr = "l2_rqsts.demand_data_rd_hit + l2_rqsts.pf_hit + l2_rqsts.rfo_hit",
.metric_name = "DCache_L2_All_Hits",
},
{
.metric_expr = "max(l2_rqsts.all_demand_data_rd - l2_rqsts.demand_data_rd_hit, 0) + l2_rqsts.pf_miss + l2_rqsts.rfo_miss",
.metric_name = "DCache_L2_All_Miss",
},
{
.metric_expr = "dcache_l2_all_hits + dcache_l2_all_miss",
.metric_name = "DCache_L2_All",
}
- Add suport for 'd_ratio', '>' and '<' operators to the expression
resolver used in calculating metrics in 'perf stat'.
Support for new kernel features:
- Support TEXT_POKE and KSYMBOL_TYPE_OOL perf metadata events to cope
with things like ftrace, trampolines, i.e. changes in the kernel
text that gets in the way of properly decoding Intel PT hardware
traces, for instance.
Intel PT:
- Add various knobs to reduce the volume of Intel PT traces by
reducing the level of details such as decoding just some types of
packets (e.g., FUP/TIP, PSB+), also filtering by time range.
- Add new itrace options (log flags to the 'd' option, error flags to
the 'e' one, etc), controlling how Intel PT is transformed into
perf events, document some missing options (e.g., how to synthesize
callchains).
BPF:
- Properly report BPF errors when parsing events.
- Do not setup side-band events if LIBBPF is not linked, fixing a
segfault.
Libraries:
- Improvements to the libtraceevent plugin mechanism.
- Improve libtracevent support for KVM trace events SVM exit reasons.
- Add a libtracevent plugins for decoding syscalls/sys_enter_futex
and for tlb_flush.
- Ensure sample_period is set libpfm4 events in 'perf test'.
- Fixup libperf namespacing, to make sure what is in libperf has the
perf_ namespace while what is now only in tools/perf/ doesn't use
that prefix.
Arch specific:
- Improve the testing of vendor events and metrics in 'perf test'.
- Allow no ARM CoreSight hardware tracer sink to be specified on
command line.
- Fix arm_spe_x recording when mixed with other perf events.
- Add s390 idle functions 'psw_idle' and 'psw_idle_exit' to list of
idle symbols.
- List kernel supplied event aliases for arm64 in 'perf list'.
- Add support for extended register capability in PowerPC 9 and 10.
- Added nest IMC power9 metric events.
Miscellaneous:
- No need to setup sample_regs_intr/sample_regs_user for dummy
events.
- Update various copies of kernel headers, some causing perf to
handle new syscalls, MSRs, etc.
- Improve usage of flex and yacc, enabling warnings and addressing
the fallout.
- Add missing '--output' option to 'perf kmem' so that it can pass it
along to 'perf record'.
- 'perf probe' fixes related to adding multiple probes on the same
address for the same event.
- Make 'perf probe' warn if the target function is a GNU indirect
function.
- Remove //anon mmap events from 'perf inject jit' to fix supporting
both using ELF files for generated functions and the perf-PID.map
approaches"

Add extended regs to sample_reg_mask in the tool side to use with `-I?`
option. Perf tools side uses extended mask to display the platform
supported register names (with -I? option) to the user and also send
this mask to the kernel to capture the extended registers in each
sample. Hence decide the mask value based on the processor version.
Currently definitions for `mfspr`, `SPRN_PVR` are part of
`arch/powerpc/util/header.c`. Move this to a header file so that these
definitions can be re-used in other source files as well.

A couple of weeks of fixes.
There's one fix for an oops on Power9 machines with Open CAPI adapters.
And a fix for probable memory corruption in some of the new NPU code, caught by
smatch though and not seen in the wild.
Plus a few other minor fixes.
There's one non-fix which is the perf_regs change. That was sent during the
merge window but I accidentally only merged the first of two patches in the
series. It's been in linux-next so hopefully doesn't conflict with anything in
acme's tree.

On each sample, Monitor Mode Control Register A (MMCRA) content is
saved in pt_regs. MMCRA does not have a entry as-is in the pt_regs but

Currently, on x86-64, perf uses LFENCE and MFENCE (rmb() and mb(),
respectively) when processing events from the perf ring buffer which
is unnecessarily expensive as we can do more lightweight in particular
given this is critical fast-path in perf.
According to Peter rmb()/mb() were added back then via a94d342b9c
("tools/perf: Add required memory barriers") at a time where kernel
still supported chips that needed it, but nowadays support for these
has been ditched completely, therefore we can fix them up as well.
While for x86-64, replacing rmb() and mb() with smp_*() variants would
result in just a compiler barrier for the former and LOCK + ADD for
the latter (__sync_synchronize() uses slower MFENCE by the way), Peter
suggested we can use smp_{load_acquire,store_release}() instead for
architectures where its implementation doesn't resolve in slower smp_mb().
Thus, e.g. in x86-64 we would be able to avoid CPU barrier entirely due
to TSO. For architectures where the latter needs to use smp_mb() e.g.
on arm, we stick to cheaper smp_rmb() variant for fetching the head.
This work adds helpers ring_buffer_read_head() and ring_buffer_write_tail()
for tools infrastructure that either switches to smp_load_acquire() for
architectures where it is cheaper or uses READ_ONCE() + smp_rmb() barrier
for those where it's not in order to fetch the data_head from the perf
control page, and it uses smp_store_release() to write the data_tail.
Latter is smp_mb() + WRITE_ONCE() combination or a cheaper variant if
architecture allows for it. Those that rely on smp_rmb() and smp_mb() can
further improve performance in a follow up step by implementing the two
under tools/arch/*/include/asm/barrier.h such that they don't have to
fallback to rmb() and mb() in tools/include/asm/barrier.h.
Switch perf to use ring_buffer_read_head() and ring_buffer_write_tail()
so it can make use of the optimizations. Later, we convert libbpf as
well to use the same helpers.
Side note [0]: the topic has been raised of whether one could simply use
the C11 gcc builtins [1] for the smp_load_acquire() and smp_store_release()
instead:
__atomic_load_n(ptr, __ATOMIC_ACQUIRE);
__atomic_store_n(ptr, val, __ATOMIC_RELEASE);
Kernel and (presumably) tooling shipped along with the kernel has a
minimum requirement of being able to build with gcc-4.6 and the latter
does not have C11 builtins. While generally the C11 memory models don't
align with the kernel's, the C11 load-acquire and store-release alone
/could/ suffice, however. Issue is that this is implementation dependent
on how the load-acquire and store-release is done by the compiler and
the mapping of supported compilers must align to be compatible with the
kernel's implementation, and thus needs to be verified/tracked on a
case by case basis whether they match (unless an architecture uses them
also from kernel side). The implementations for smp_load_acquire() and
smp_store_release() in this patch have been adapted from the kernel side
ones to have a concrete and compatible mapping in place.

This updates the tools/perf/ copy of the powerpc file used to generate
the syscall table file used to make 'perf trace' become aware of the new
'rseq' syscall, no matter in which system it gets built, i.e. older
systems where the syscalls are not available in the running kernel (via
tracefs) or in the system headers will still be aware of these
syscalls/.

The changes in the 3214d01f13 ("KVM: PPC: Book3S: Provide information
about hardware/firmware CVE workarounds") commit right now will not
produce any change in the tools, but that is because we still need to
improve tools/perf/trace/beauty/kvm_ioctl.sh to build per arch string
tables, so that we avoid assigning multiple times to the same command
string entry, i.e. multiple defines, for different arches, have the same
value, causing this:
In file included from trace/beauty/ioctl.c:82:0:
/tmp/build/perf/trace/beauty/generated/ioctl/kvm_ioctl_array.c: In function ‘ioctl__scnprintf_kvm_cmd’:

So the onlye effect of updating the tools/ copy of ppc's kvm.h header
is to silence these perf build warnings:

Warning: Kernel ABI header at 'tools/arch/powerpc/include/uapi/asm/kvm.h' differs from latest version at 'arch/powerpc/include/uapi/asm/kvm.h'
At some point we should do what we did for the errno tables and create

Many user space API headers have licensing information, which is either
incomplete, badly formatted or just a shorthand for referring to the
license under which the file is supposed to be. This makes it hard for
compliance tools to determine the correct license.
Update these files with an SPDX license identifier. The identifier was
chosen based on the license information in the file.
GPL/LGPL licensed headers get the matching GPL/LGPL SPDX license

This exception makes it possible to include GPL headers into non GPL
code, without confusing license compliance tools.
Headers which have either explicit dual licensing or are just licensed
under a non GPL license are updated with the corresponding SPDX
identifier and the GPLv2 with syscall exception identifier. The format
is:
((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR SPDX-ID-OF-OTHER-LICENSE)
SPDX license identifiers are a legally binding shorthand, which can be
used instead of the full boiler plate text. The update does not remove
existing license information as this has to be done on a case by case
basis and the copyright holders might have to be consulted. This will
happen in a separate step.

Philippe Ombredanne. See the previous patch in this series for the
methodology of how this patch was researched.

Many user space API headers are missing licensing information, which
makes it hard for compliance tools to determine the correct license.
By default are files without license information under the default
license of the kernel, which is GPLV2. Marking them GPLV2 would exclude
them from being included in non GPLV2 code, which is obviously not
intended. The user space API headers fall under the syscall exception
which is in the kernels COPYING file:
NOTE! This copyright does *not* cover user programs that use kernel
services by normal system calls - this is merely considered normal use
of the kernel, and does *not* fall under the heading of "derived work".
otherwise syscall usage would not be possible.
Update the files which contain no license information with an SPDX
license identifier. The chosen identifier is 'GPL-2.0 WITH
Linux-syscall-note' which is the officially assigned identifier for the
Linux syscall exception. SPDX license identifiers are a legally binding
shorthand, which can be used instead of the full boiler plate text.

Many source files in the tree are missing licensing information, which
makes it harder for compliance tools to determine the correct license.
By default all files without license information are under the default
license of the kernel, which is GPL version 2.
Update the files which contain no license information with the 'GPL-2.0'
SPDX license identifier. The SPDX identifier is a legally binding
shorthand, which can be used instead of the full boiler plate text.
This patch is based on work done by Thomas Gleixner and Kate Stewart and
Philippe Ombredanne.
How this work was done:
Patches were generated and checked against linux-4.14-rc6 for a subset of
the use cases:
- file had no licensing information it it.
- file was a */uapi/* one with no licensing information in it,
- file was a */uapi/* one with existing licensing information,
Further patches will be generated in subsequent months to fix up cases
where non-standard license headers were used, and references to license
had to be inferred by heuristics based on keywords.
The analysis to determine which SPDX License Identifier to be applied to
a file was done in a spreadsheet of side by side results from of the
output of two independent scanners (ScanCode & Windriver) producing SPDX
tag:value files created by Philippe Ombredanne. Philippe prepared the
base worksheet, and did an initial spot review of a few 1000 files.
The 4.13 kernel was the starting point of the analysis with 60,537 files
assessed. Kate Stewart did a file by file comparison of the scanner
results in the spreadsheet to determine which SPDX license identifier(s)
to be applied to the file. She confirmed any determination that was not
immediately clear with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation.
Criteria used to select files for SPDX license identifier tagging was:
- Files considered eligible had to be source code files.
- Make and config files were included as candidates if they contained >5
lines of source
- File already had some variant of a license header in it (even if <5
lines).
All documentation files were explicitly excluded.
The following heuristics were used to determine which SPDX license
identifiers to apply.
- when both scanners couldn't find any license traces, file was
considered to have no license information in it, and the top level
COPYING file license applied.
For non */uapi/* files that summary was:
SPDX license identifier # files
---------------------------------------------------|-------
GPL-2.0 11139
and resulted in the first patch in this series.
If that file was a */uapi/* path one, it was "GPL-2.0 WITH
Linux-syscall-note" otherwise it was "GPL-2.0". Results of that was:
SPDX license identifier # files
---------------------------------------------------|-------
GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 930
and resulted in the second patch in this series.
- if a file had some form of licensing information in it, and was one
of the */uapi/* ones, it was denoted with the Linux-syscall-note if
any GPL family license was found in the file or had no licensing in
it (per prior point). Results summary:
SPDX license identifier # files
---------------------------------------------------|------
GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 270
GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 169
((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-2-Clause) 21
((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 17
LGPL-2.1+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 15
GPL-1.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 14
((GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 5
LGPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 4
LGPL-2.1 WITH Linux-syscall-note 3
((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR MIT) 3
((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) AND MIT) 1
and that resulted in the third patch in this series.
- when the two scanners agreed on the detected license(s), that became
the concluded license(s).
- when there was disagreement between the two scanners (one detected a
license but the other didn't, or they both detected different
licenses) a manual inspection of the file occurred.
- In most cases a manual inspection of the information in the file
resulted in a clear resolution of the license that should apply (and
which scanner probably needed to revisit its heuristics).
- When it was not immediately clear, the license identifier was
confirmed with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation.
- If there was any question as to the appropriate license identifier,
the file was flagged for further research and to be revisited later
in time.
In total, over 70 hours of logged manual review was done on the
spreadsheet to determine the SPDX license identifiers to apply to the
source files by Kate, Philippe, Thomas and, in some cases, confirmation
by lawyers working with the Linux Foundation.
Kate also obtained a third independent scan of the 4.13 code base from
FOSSology, and compared selected files where the other two scanners
disagreed against that SPDX file, to see if there was new insights. The
Windriver scanner is based on an older version of FOSSology in part, so
they are related.
Thomas did random spot checks in about 500 files from the spreadsheets
for the uapi headers and agreed with SPDX license identifier in the
files he inspected. For the non-uapi files Thomas did random spot checks
in about 15000 files.
In initial set of patches against 4.14-rc6, 3 files were found to have
copy/paste license identifier errors, and have been fixed to reflect the
correct identifier.
Additionally Philippe spent 10 hours this week doing a detailed manual
inspection and review of the 12,461 patched files from the initial patch
version early this week with:
- a full scancode scan run, collecting the matched texts, detected
license ids and scores
- reviewing anything where there was a license detected (about 500+
files) to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct
- reviewing anything where there was no detection but the patch license
was not GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note to ensure that the applied
SPDX license was correct
This produced a worksheet with 20 files needing minor correction. This
worksheet was then exported into 3 different .csv files for the
different types of files to be modified.
These .csv files were then reviewed by Greg. Thomas wrote a script to
parse the csv files and add the proper SPDX tag to the file, in the
format that the file expected. This script was further refined by Greg
based on the output to detect more types of files automatically and to
distinguish between header and source .c files (which need different
comment types.) Finally Greg ran the script using the .csv files to
generate the patches.

alpha doesn't define MADV_HWPOISON and MADV_SOFT_OFFLINE.
This patch regenerates mman.h for each arch, defines these missing
macros for perf. For missing MADV_*, fall back to asm-generic/mman-common
because they are in a 'case ...' statement. For flags, define it to 0.
Following is the script to generate this patch:
