The MR25 family doesn't support JEDEC, so they need explicit mentioning
in the list of supported spi IDs. This makes it possible to add these
using for example:
compatible = "everspin,mr25h40";
There was already an entry for mr25h256. Move that one out of the "keep
for compatibility" section and put in a new group for Everspin MRAMs.

This patch renames the SPINOR_OP_* macros of the 4-byte address
instruction set so the new names all share a common pattern: the 4-byte
address name is built from the 3-byte address name appending the "_4B"
suffix.
The patch also introduces new op codes to support other SPI protocols such
as SPI 1-4-4 and SPI 1-2-2.
This is a transitional patch and will help a later patch of spi-nor.c
to automate the translation from the 3-byte address op codes into their
4-byte address version.

For reading flash content we use MMIO but it's possible to read only
first 16 MiB this way. It's simply an arch design/limitation.
To support flash sizes bigger than 16 MiB implement indirect access
using ChipCommon registers.
This has been tested using MX25L25635F.

BCM53573 is a new series of Broadcom's SoCs. It's based on ARM and uses
this old ChipCommon-based flash access. Early tests resulted in flash
corruptions that were tracked down to using cached MMIO for flash read
access. Switch to ioremap_nocache conditionally to support BCM53573 and
don't break performance on old MIPS devices.

We dropped strict MIPS dependency for bcm47xxsflash driver in:
commit 5651d6aaf4 ("mtd: bcm47xxsflash: use ioremap_cache() instead of
KSEG0ADDR()") but using ioremap_cache still limits building it to few
selected architectures only.
A recent commit 57d8f7dd21 ("bcma: allow enabling serial flash support
on non-MIPS SoCs") automatically dropped MIPS dependency for
MTD_BCM47XXSFLASH which broke building e.g. on powerpc and cris.
The bcma change is alright as it doesn't break building bcma code in any
way. MTD_BCM47XXSFLASH on the other hand should be limited to archs
which need it and can build it (by providing ioremap_cache).

An opal_msg of type OPAL_MSG_ASYNC_COMP contains the return code in the
params[1] struct member. However this isn't intuitive or obvious when
reading the code and requires that a user look at the skiboot
documentation or opal-api.h to verify this.
Add an inline function to get the return code from an opal_msg and update
call sites accordingly.

Change the return value of spi-nor device read and write methods to
allow returning amount of data transferred and errors as
read(2)/write(2) does.
Also, start handling positive returns in spi_nor_read(), since we want
to convert drivers to start returning the read-length both via *retlen
and the return code. (We don't need to do the same transition process
for spi_nor_write(), since ->write() didn't used to have a return code
at all.)

Add __init attribute on a function that is only called from other __init
functions and that is not inlined, at least with gcc version 4.8.4 on an
x86 machine with allyesconfig. Currently, the function is put in the
.text.unlikely segment. Declaring it as __init will cause it to be put in

And after the change it is as follows:
0000000000000000 l F .init.text 0000000000000917 fixup_pmc551

not called from any other function.

PAGE_CACHE_{SIZE,SHIFT,MASK,ALIGN} macros were introduced *long* time
ago with promise that one day it will be possible to implement page
cache with bigger chunks than PAGE_SIZE.
This promise never materialized. And unlikely will.
We have many places where PAGE_CACHE_SIZE assumed to be equal to
PAGE_SIZE. And it's constant source of confusion on whether
PAGE_CACHE_* or PAGE_* constant should be used in a particular case,
especially on the border between fs and mm.
Global switching to PAGE_CACHE_SIZE != PAGE_SIZE would cause to much
breakage to be doable.
Let's stop pretending that pages in page cache are special. They are
not.
The changes are pretty straight-forward:
- <foo> << (PAGE_CACHE_SHIFT - PAGE_SHIFT) -> <foo>;
- <foo> >> (PAGE_CACHE_SHIFT - PAGE_SHIFT) -> <foo>;
- PAGE_CACHE_{SIZE,SHIFT,MASK,ALIGN} -> PAGE_{SIZE,SHIFT,MASK,ALIGN};
- page_cache_get() -> get_page();
- page_cache_release() -> put_page();
This patch contains automated changes generated with coccinelle using
script below. For some reason, coccinelle doesn't patch header files.
I've called spatch for them manually.
The only adjustment after coccinelle is revert of changes to
PAGE_CAHCE_ALIGN definition: we are going to drop it later.
There are few places in the code where coccinelle didn't reach. I'll
fix them manually in a separate patch. Comments and documentation also
will be addressed with the separate patch.

Using KSEG0ADDR makes code highly MIPS dependent and not portable.
Thanks to the fix a68f376 ("MIPS: io.h: Define `ioremap_cache'") we can
use ioremap_cache which is generic and supported on MIPS as well now.
KSEG0ADDR was translating 0x1c000000 into 0x9c000000. With ioremap_cache
we use MIPS's __ioremap (and then remap_area_pages). This results in
different address (e.g. 0xc0080000) but it still should be cached as
expected and it was successfully tested with BCM47186B0.
Other than that drivers/bcma/driver_chipcommon_sflash.c nicely setups a
struct resource for access window, but we wren't using it. Use it now
and drop duplicated info.

Commit 4316302292 ("mtd: m25p80: allow arbitrary OF matching for
"jedec,spi-nor"") moved the "jedec,spi-nor" handling from the
spi_device_id table to the of_match_table, to better handle matching
complex device tree compatible strings. With that patch, device tree
support works as expected when m25p80.c is built into the kernel.
However, that commit ignored the fact that:
(1) (non-DT) platform devices might want to use the "spi-nor" string
for matching with this driver, rather than picking an arbitrary one
like "m25p80"
(2) the core SPI uevent/modalias code doesn't yet support kernel module
autoloading via of_match_table strings; so for DT-based devices, it
will only report (part of) the first compatible string used
Problem (1) has been reported previously, and I forgot to patch it up
afterward.
Problem (2) was noticed recently here:
http://lists.infradead.org/pipermail/linux-mtd/2015-October/062369.htmlhttps://lkml.org/lkml/2015/11/12/574
Specifically, this patch fixes m25p80.ko module autoloading for cases
like this:
flash@xxx {
compatible = "jedec,spi-nor";
...
};
because modalias of "spi:spi-nor" (the only module loading info provided
by the SPI core for this device) will now be listed as an alias in
m25p80.ko.
Notably, it does *not* help cases like this:
flash@xxx {
compatible = "vendor,shiny-new-device", "jedec,spi-nor";
...
};
unless we also list "shiny-new-device" in m25p_ids[]. There has been
discussion on future work for this issue here:

The problem this patch is trying to address is such, that SPI NOR flash
devices attached to a dedicated SPI NOR controller cannot read their
properties from the associated struct device_node.
A couple of facts first:
1) Each SPI NOR flash has a struct spi_nor associated with it.
2) Each SPI NOR flash has certain device properties associated
with it, for example the OF property 'm25p,fast-read' is a
good pick. These properties are used by the SPI NOR core to
select which opcodes are sent to such SPI NOR flash. These
properties are coming from spi_nor .dev->of_node .
The problem is, that for SPI NOR controllers, the struct spi_nor .dev
element points to the struct device of the SPI NOR controller, not the
SPI NOR flash. Therefore, the associated dev->of_node also is the
one of the controller and therefore the SPI NOR core code is trying to
parse the SPI NOR controller's properties, not the properties of the
SPI NOR flash.
Note: The m25p80 driver is not affected, because the controller and
the flash are the same device, so the associated device_node
of the controller and the flash are the same.
This patch adjusts the SPI NOR core such that the device_node is not
picked from spi_nor .dev directly, but from a new separate spi_nor
.flash_node element. This let's the SPI NOR controller drivers set up
a different spi_nor .flash_node element for each SPI NOR flash.
This patch also fixes the controller drivers to be compatible with
this modification and correctly set the spi_nor .flash_node element.

The SPI core currently reports the MODALIAS uevent as "spi:<modalias>"
even for SPI devices that were registered by OF.
That means the OF module alias exported by MODULE_OF_TABLE(of,...) is
currently not used and user-space has no way to autoload this module.
But it is still a good practice to add the OF module alias information
into the kernel module even when it currently is unused so once the SPI
core is changed to report a correct OF modalias uevent, module
autoloading will be working for this driver.

When we added the "jedec,spi-nor" compatible string for use in this
driver, we added it as a modalias option. The modalias can be derived in
different ways for platform devices vs. device tree (of_*) matching. But
for device tree matching (the primary target of this identifier string),
the modalias is determined from the first entry in the 'compatible'
property. IOW, the following properties would bind to this driver:
// Option (a), modalias = "spi-nor"
compatible = "jedec,spi-nor";
// Option (b), modalias = "spi-nor"
compatible = "idontknowwhatimdoing,spi-nor";
But the following would not:
// Option (c), modalias = "shinynewdevice"
compatible = "myvendor,shinynewdevice", "jedec,spi-nor";
So, we'd like to match (a) and (c) (even when we don't have an explicit
entry for "shinynewdevice"), and we'd rather not allow (b).
To do this, we
(1) always (for devices without specific platform data) pass the
modalias to the spi-nor library;
(2) rework the spi-nor library to not reject "bad" names, and
instead just fall back to autodetection; and
(3) add the .of_match_table to properly catch all "jedec,spi-nor".
This allows (a) and (c) without warnings, and rejects (b).

unfortunately, including backing-dev.h from include/linux/blkdev.h
makes cyclic include dependency quite likely.
This patch separates out backing-dev-defs.h which only has the
essential definitions and updates blkdev.h to include it. c files
which need access to more backing-dev details now include
backing-dev.h directly. This takes backing-dev.h off the common
include dependency chain making it a lot easier to use it across block

In commit 8ff16cf77c ("Documentation: devicetree: m25p80: add "nor-jedec"
binding"), we added a generic "nor-jedec" binding to catch all
mostly-compatible SPI NOR flash which can be detected via the READ ID
opcode (0x9F). This was discussed and reviewed at the time, however
objections have come up since then as part of this discussion:
http://lkml.kernel.org/g/20150511224646.GJ32500@ld-irv-0074
It seems the parties involved agree that "jedec,spi-nor" does a better
job of capturing the fact that this is SPI-specific, not just any NOR
flash.
This binding was only merged for v4.1-rc1, so it's still OK to change
the naming.
At the same time, let's move the documentation to a better name.
Next up: stop referring to code (drivers/mtd/devices/m25p80.c) from the
documentation.

We had many entries that were recently added just to allow selecting
some flashes directly but were never used. They weren't providing any
special flash handling, we just needed them due to the lack of some
generic binding string.
With the introduction of "nor-jedec" (in 1103b85) they won't be needed
unless we discover some faulty flash requiring workarounds.
As explained in m25p80 DT documentation we require specifying
"nor-jedec" now as less specific compatible entry.

Use the new 'nor-jedec' binding to provide automatic detection of flash
that use the 0x9F READ ID opcode. This can help for use cases where
platforms just specify compatibility with "m25p80", and then see
messages like this:
m25p80 spi32766.0: found s25fl256s1, expected m25p80
Instead, they can just specify the generic string and see this:
m25p80 spi32766.0: s25fl256s1 (32768 Kbytes)
Also, update the language about m25p_ids[] to straighten out the
expectations here. We should no longer need to continuously grow the
m25p_ids[] table, and in fact, we might want to start removing entries
which are not used in device trees so far, so we can just default to
auto-detection as much as possible in the future.

Under certain conditions, the SPI-FSM Controller can be left in a state where
the data FIFO is not entirely empty. This can lead to problems where subsequent
data transfers appear to have been shifted by a number of unidentified bytes.
One simple example would be an errant FSM sequence which loaded more data to the
FIFO than was read by the host. Another more interesting case results from an
obscure artefact in the FSM Controller. When switching from data transfers in
x4 or x2 mode to data transfers in x1 mode, extraneous bytes will appear in the
FIFO, unless the previous data transfer was a multiple of 32 cycles (i.e. 8
bytes for x2, and 16 bytes for x4). This applies equally whether FSM is being
operated directly by a S/W driver, or by the SPI boot-controller in FSM-Boot
mode. Furthermore, data in the FIFO not only survive a transition between
FSM-Boot and FSM, but also a S/W reset of IP block [1].
By taking certain precautions, it is possible to prevent the driver from causing
this type of problem (e.g. ensuring that the host and programmed sequence
agree on the transfer size, and restricting transfer sizes to multiples of
32-cycles [2]). However, at the point the driver is loaded, no assumptions can be
made regarding the state of the FIFO. Even if previous S/W drivers have behaved
correctly, it is impossible to control the number of transactions serviced by
the controller operating in FSM-Boot.
To address this problem, we ensure the FIFO is cleared during initialisation,
before performing any FSM operations. Previously, the fsm_clear_fifo() code was
capable of detecting and clearing any unwanted 32-bit words from the FIFO. This
patch extends the capability to handle an arbitrary number of bytes present in
the FIFO [3]. Now that the issue is better understood, we also remove the calls
to fsm_clear_fifo() following the fsm_read() and fsm_write() operations.
The process of actually clearing the FIFO deserves a mention. While the FIFO
may contain any number of bytes, the SPI_FAST_SEQ_STA register only reports the
number of complete 32-bit words present. Furthermore, data can only be drained
from the FIFO by reading complete 32-bit words. With this in mind, a two stage
process is used to the clear the FIFO:
1. Read any complete 32-bit words from the FIFO, as reported by the
SPI_FAST_SEQ_STA register.
2. Mop up any remaining bytes. At this point, it is not known if there
are 0, 1, 2, or 3 bytes in the FIFO. To handle all cases, a dummy
FSM sequence is used to load one byte at a time, until a complete
32-bit word is formed; at most, 4 bytes will need to be loaded.
[1] Although this issue has existed since early versions of the SPI-FSM
controller, its full extent only emerged recently as a consequence of the
targetpacks starting to use FSM-Boot(x4) as the default configuration.
[2] The requirement to restrict transfers to multiples of 32 cycles was found
empirically back when DUAL and QUAD mode support was added. The current
analysis now gives a satisfactory explanation for this requirement.
[3] Theoretically, it is possible for the FIFO to contain an arbitrary number of
bits. However, since there are no known use-cases that leave incomplete
bytes in the FIFO, only words and bytes are considered here.

m25p80's device ID table is now spi_nor_ids, defined in spi-nor. The
MODULE_DEVICE_TABLE() macro doesn't work with extern definitions, but
its use was also removed at the same time. Now if m25p80 is built as
a module it doesn't get the necessary aliases to be loaded
automatically.
A clean solution to this will involve defining the list of device
IDs in spi-nor.h and removing struct spi_device_id from the spi-nor

As a quick fix suitable for stable, copy the device IDs back into

Drivers currently call spi_nor_match_id() and then spi_nor_scan().
This adds a dependency on struct spi_device_id which we want to
avoid. Make spi_nor_scan() do it for them.

This "type" seems to be an extra hint for m25p80 about the flash. Some
archs register flash_platform_data with "name" set to "m25p80" and then
with a real flash name set in "type". It seems to be a trick specific
to the m25p80 so let's move it out of spi-nor.
Btw switch to the spi_nor_match_id instead of iterating spi_nor_ids.

This patch is created with reference to the ongoing lkml thread

where Andrew Morton wrote:
"
- puts is presumably faster
- puts doesn't go rogue if you accidentally pass it a "%".
- this patch would actually make compiled object files few bytes smaller.
Perhaps because seq_printf() is a varargs function, forcing the
caller to pass args on the stack instead of in registers.

Param parsing gets documented, and also "--" now forces args to be

Module NX/RO protections get tightened: we now set them before calling

support 1 or 2 byte operations, with a specified command. This allows us to
remove device/register specific code, such as the N25Q fsm_wrvcr() function.
The 'QE' configuration code is updated accordingly, with minor tweaks to ensure
the register values are only written if actually required. One notable change
in this area is that the 'W25Q_STATUS_QE' bit-field is now defined with respect
to the 'SR2' register, rather than the combined 'SR1+SR2' register which is only

Support for the Macronix 32-bit addressing scheme was originally developed using
the MX25L25635E device. As is often the case, it was found that the presence of
a "WAIT" instruction was required for the "EN4B/EX4B" FSM Sequence to complete.
(It is known that the SPI FSM Controller makes certain undocumented assumptions
regarding what constitutes a valid sequence.) However, further testing
suggested that a small delay was required after issuing the "EX4B" command;
without this delay, data corruptions were observed, consistent with the device
not being ready to retrieve data. Although the issue was not fully understood,
the workaround of adding a small delay was implemented, while awaiting
clarification from Macronix.
The same behaviour has now been found with a second Macronix device, the
MX25L25655E. However, with this device, it seems that the delay is also
required after the 'EN4B' commands. This discovery has prompted us to revisit
the issue.
Although still not conclusive, further tests have suggested that the issue is
down to the SPI FSM Controller, rather than the Macronix devices. Furthermore,
an alternative workaround has emerged which is to set the WAIT time to
0x00000001, rather then 0x00000000. (Note, the WAIT instruction is used purely
for the purpose of achieving "sequence validity", rather than actually
implementing a delay!)
The issue is now being investigated by the Design and Validation teams. In the
meantime, we implement the alternative workaround, which reduces the effective
delay from 1us to 1ns.

of calling back into a chip specific initialisation routine. In this patch
we provide one for the N25Qxxx series, which endeavours to setup things
like the read, write and erase sequences, as they differ from the
default. We also configure 32bit support and the amount of dummy cycles to
use.

The N25Qxxx Serial Flash devices required different sequence
configurations depending on whether they're running in 24bit (3Byte)
or 32bit (4Byte) mode. We provide those here.

Message sequences can vary depending on how many pads (lines) are
required to address the chip (mode & dummy), how many data pads (lines)
are required to write out to the chip which will determine speed
amongst other things which are detailed by the SFDP specification. We
are able to use multiple configurations for each chip, but they need
to me matched to a device's capabilities. These configurations are
listed in preference order - most preferred first.

The FSM Serial Flash Controller is driven by issuing a standard set of
register writes we call a message sequence. This patch supplies a method
to prepare the message sequence responsible for updating a chip's VCR.
