In 2016 GNU Make made a backwards incompatible change to the way '#'
characters were handled in Makefiles when used inside functions or
macros:
http://git.savannah.gnu.org/cgit/make.git/commit/?id=c6966b323811c37acedff05b57
Due to this change, when attempting to run `make prepare' I get a
spurious make syntax error:
/home/earnest/linux/tools/objtool/.fixdep.o.cmd:1: *** missing separator. Stop.
When inspecting `.fixdep.o.cmd' it includes two lines which use
unescaped comment characters at the top:
\# cannot find fixdep (/home/earnest/linux/tools/objtool//fixdep)
\# using basic dep data
This is because `tools/build/Build.include' prints these '\#'
characters:
printf '\# cannot find fixdep (%s)\n' $(fixdep) > $(dot-target).cmd; \
printf '\# using basic dep data\n\n' >> $(dot-target).cmd; \
This completes commit 9564a8cf42 ("Kbuild: fix # escaping in .cmd files
for future Make").

I tried building using a freshly built Make (4.2.1-69-g8a731d1), but
already the objtool build broke with
orc_dump.c: In function ‘orc_dump’:
orc_dump.c:106:2: error: ‘elf_getshnum’ is deprecated [-Werror=deprecated-declarations]
if (elf_getshdrnum(elf, &nr_sections)) {
Turns out that with that new Make, the backslash was not removed, so cpp
didn't see a #include directive, grep found nothing, and
-DLIBELF_USE_DEPRECATED was wrongly put in CFLAGS.
Now, that new Make behaviour is documented in their NEWS file:
* WARNING: Backward-incompatibility!
Number signs (#) appearing inside a macro reference or function invocation
no longer introduce comments and should not be escaped with backslashes:
thus a call such as:
foo := $(shell echo '#')
is legal. Previously the number sign needed to be escaped, for example:
foo := $(shell echo '\#')
Now this latter will resolve to "\#". If you want to write makefiles
portable to both versions, assign the number sign to a variable:
C := \#
foo := $(shell echo '$C')
This was claimed to be fixed in 3.81, but wasn't, for some reason.
To detect this change search for 'nocomment' in the .FEATURES variable.
This also fixes up the two make-cmd instances to replace # with $(pound)
rather than with \#. There might very well be other places that need
similar fixup in preparation for whatever future Make release contains
the above change, but at least this builds an x86_64 defconfig with the
new make.

Many source files in the tree are missing licensing information, which
makes it harder for compliance tools to determine the correct license.
By default all files without license information are under the default
license of the kernel, which is GPL version 2.
Update the files which contain no license information with the 'GPL-2.0'
SPDX license identifier. The SPDX identifier is a legally binding
shorthand, which can be used instead of the full boiler plate text.
This patch is based on work done by Thomas Gleixner and Kate Stewart and
Philippe Ombredanne.
How this work was done:
Patches were generated and checked against linux-4.14-rc6 for a subset of
the use cases:
- file had no licensing information it it.
- file was a */uapi/* one with no licensing information in it,
- file was a */uapi/* one with existing licensing information,
Further patches will be generated in subsequent months to fix up cases
where non-standard license headers were used, and references to license
had to be inferred by heuristics based on keywords.
The analysis to determine which SPDX License Identifier to be applied to
a file was done in a spreadsheet of side by side results from of the
output of two independent scanners (ScanCode & Windriver) producing SPDX
tag:value files created by Philippe Ombredanne. Philippe prepared the
base worksheet, and did an initial spot review of a few 1000 files.
The 4.13 kernel was the starting point of the analysis with 60,537 files
assessed. Kate Stewart did a file by file comparison of the scanner
results in the spreadsheet to determine which SPDX license identifier(s)
to be applied to the file. She confirmed any determination that was not
immediately clear with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation.
Criteria used to select files for SPDX license identifier tagging was:
- Files considered eligible had to be source code files.
- Make and config files were included as candidates if they contained >5
lines of source
- File already had some variant of a license header in it (even if <5
lines).
All documentation files were explicitly excluded.
The following heuristics were used to determine which SPDX license
identifiers to apply.
- when both scanners couldn't find any license traces, file was
considered to have no license information in it, and the top level
COPYING file license applied.
For non */uapi/* files that summary was:
SPDX license identifier # files
---------------------------------------------------|-------
GPL-2.0 11139
and resulted in the first patch in this series.
If that file was a */uapi/* path one, it was "GPL-2.0 WITH
Linux-syscall-note" otherwise it was "GPL-2.0". Results of that was:
SPDX license identifier # files
---------------------------------------------------|-------
GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 930
and resulted in the second patch in this series.
- if a file had some form of licensing information in it, and was one
of the */uapi/* ones, it was denoted with the Linux-syscall-note if
any GPL family license was found in the file or had no licensing in
it (per prior point). Results summary:
SPDX license identifier # files
---------------------------------------------------|------
GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 270
GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 169
((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-2-Clause) 21
((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 17
LGPL-2.1+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 15
GPL-1.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 14
((GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 5
LGPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 4
LGPL-2.1 WITH Linux-syscall-note 3
((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR MIT) 3
((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) AND MIT) 1
and that resulted in the third patch in this series.
- when the two scanners agreed on the detected license(s), that became
the concluded license(s).
- when there was disagreement between the two scanners (one detected a
license but the other didn't, or they both detected different
licenses) a manual inspection of the file occurred.
- In most cases a manual inspection of the information in the file
resulted in a clear resolution of the license that should apply (and
which scanner probably needed to revisit its heuristics).
- When it was not immediately clear, the license identifier was
confirmed with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation.
- If there was any question as to the appropriate license identifier,
the file was flagged for further research and to be revisited later
in time.
In total, over 70 hours of logged manual review was done on the
spreadsheet to determine the SPDX license identifiers to apply to the
source files by Kate, Philippe, Thomas and, in some cases, confirmation
by lawyers working with the Linux Foundation.
Kate also obtained a third independent scan of the 4.13 code base from
FOSSology, and compared selected files where the other two scanners
disagreed against that SPDX file, to see if there was new insights. The
Windriver scanner is based on an older version of FOSSology in part, so
they are related.
Thomas did random spot checks in about 500 files from the spreadsheets
for the uapi headers and agreed with SPDX license identifier in the
files he inspected. For the non-uapi files Thomas did random spot checks
in about 15000 files.
In initial set of patches against 4.14-rc6, 3 files were found to have
copy/paste license identifier errors, and have been fixed to reflect the
correct identifier.
Additionally Philippe spent 10 hours this week doing a detailed manual
inspection and review of the 12,461 patched files from the initial patch
version early this week with:
- a full scancode scan run, collecting the matched texts, detected
license ids and scores
- reviewing anything where there was a license detected (about 500+
files) to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct
- reviewing anything where there was no detection but the patch license
was not GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note to ensure that the applied
SPDX license was correct
This produced a worksheet with 20 files needing minor correction. This
worksheet was then exported into 3 different .csv files for the
different types of files to be modified.
These .csv files were then reviewed by Greg. Thomas wrote a script to
parse the csv files and add the proper SPDX tag to the file, in the
format that the file expected. This script was further refined by Greg
based on the output to detect more types of files automatically and to
distinguish between header and source .c files (which need different
comment types.) Finally Greg ran the script using the .csv files to
generate the patches.

This allows to detect -s (--silent) option without checking GNU Make
version.
As commit e36aaea289 ("kbuild: Fix silent builds with make-4")
pointed out, GNU Make 4.x changed the way/order it presents the
command line options into MAKEFLAGS.
In Make 3.8x, 's' is always the first in a group of short options.
The group may be prefixed with '-' in some cases.
In Make 4.x, 's' is always the last in a group of short options.
As commit e6ac89fabd ("kbuild: Correctly deal with make options
which contain an 's'") addressed, we also need to deal with long
options that contain 's', like --warn-undefined-variables.
Test cases:
[1] command line input: make --silent
-> MAKEFLAGS for Make 3.8x: s
-> MAKEFLAGS for Make 4.x : s
[2] command line input: make -srR
-> MAKEFLAGS for Make 3.8x: sRr
-> MAKEFLAGS for Make 4.x : rRs
[3] command line input: make -s -rR --warn-undefined-variables
-> MAKEFLAGS for Make 3.8x: --warn-undefined-variables -sRr
-> MAKEFLAGS for Make 4.x : rRs --warn-undefined-variables
My idea to cater to all the cases more easily is to filter out long
options (--%), then search 's' with $(findstring ...). This way will
be more future-proof even if future versions of Make put 's' in the
middle of the group.

We have tools/build/feature/test-all.c to speed up feature testing,
doing all tests at once, but then all tests in this file should normally
pass.
That is not the case with the sched-getcpu one, that wasn't passing when
included from test-all.c because it needs to have _GNU_SOURCE defined
before including sched.h, but _GNU_SOURCE is defined by a header
included from another feature test included earlier in test-all.d,
test-libpython.c, resulting in:
$ cat /tmp/build/perf/feature/test-all.make.output
In file included from test-all.c:121:0:
test-sched_getcpu.c:1:0: error: "_GNU_SOURCE" redefined [-Werror]
#define _GNU_SOURCE
In file included from /usr/include/python2.7/pyconfig.h:6:0,

from test-all.c:13:
/usr/include/python2.7/pyconfig-64.h:1177:0: note: this is the location of the previous definition
#define _GNU_SOURCE 1
cc1: all warnings being treated as errors
Which would trigger testing the tests individually, when that
_GNU_SOURCE redefinition would not take place, and the whole process
would continue, just slower... Fix it.

The patch above avoided redefining CC, CXX and PKG_CONFIG in feature
detection. The patch was not merged due to a unsolved concern with the
-MD flag.
Later, commit c8c188679c ("tools build: Use the same CC for feature
detection and actual build") did the change for CC and CXX but not
PKG_CONFIG.
This patch makes PKG_CONFIG consistent with CC and CXX and moves the -MD
to CFLAGS, as suggested by Jiri in the thread above.

Python's CC and link Makefile variables were not passed to feature
detection, causing feature detection to use system's Python rather than
PYTHON_CONFIG's one. This created a mismatch between the detected Python
support and the one actually used by perf when PYTHON_CONFIG is
specified.
Fix it by moving Python's variable initialization to before feature
detection and pass FLAGS_PYTHON_EMBED to Python's feature detection's
build target.

When build with: 'make CC=clang' we were not using that CC to do
feature detection, which resulted in features being detected with gcc
and then the actual tools being built with clang.
Most of the time these compilers are compatible enough, so no
problem was being noticed.
As soon as a system with an old enough clang, one that hasn't
the cpuid.h header is used, and a gcc with it, the "get_cpuid" feature
will be found available but then code that will use can't be compiled.
Noticed with this combination:
/ $ gcc --version | head -1
gcc (Alpine 6.3.0) 6.3.0
/ $ clang --version | head -1
clang version 3.8.1 (tags/RELEASE_381/final)
/ $ cat /etc/alpine-release
3.5.0

When doing a kernel build with 'make -s', everything is silenced except
the objtool build. That's because the tools tree support for silent
builds is some combination of missing and broken.
Three changes are needed to fix it:
- Makefile: propagate '-s' to the sub-make's MAKEFLAGS variable so the
tools Makefiles can see it.
- tools/scripts/Makefile.include: fix the tools Makefiles' ability to
recognize '-s'. The MAKE_VERSION and MAKEFLAGS checks are copied from
the top-level Makefile. This silences the "DESCEND objtool" message.
- tools/build/Makefile.build: add support to the tools Build files for
recognizing '-s'. Again the MAKE_VERSION and MAKEFLAGS checks are
copied from the top-level Makefile. This silences all the object
compile/link messages.

Check if basic clang compiling environment is ready.
Doesn't like 'llvm-config --libs' which can returns llvm libraries in right
order and duplicates some libraries if necessary, there's no correspondence for
clang libraries (-lclangxxx). to avoid extra complexity and to avoid new clang
breaking libraries ordering, use --start-group and --end-group.
In this test case, manually identify required clang libs and hope it to be
stable. Putting all clang libraries here is possible (use make's wildcard), but
then feature checking becomes very slow.

Check if basic LLVM compiling environment is ready.
Use llvm-config to detect include and library directories. Avoid using
'llvm-config --cxxflags' because its result contain some unwanted flags
like --sysroot (if LLVM is built by yocto).
Use '?=' to set LLVM_CONFIG, so explicitly passing LLVM_CONFIG to make
would override it.
Use 'llvm-config --libs BPF' to check if BPF backend is compiled in.
Since now BPF bytecode is the only required backend, no need to waste
time linking llvm and clang if BPF backend is missing. This also
introduce an implicit requirement that LLVM should be new enough. Old
LLVM doesn't support BPF backend.

Adding support to remove options from final CFLAGS for both object file
and build target. It's now possible to remove CFLAGS options like:
CFLAGS_REMOVE_krava.o += -Wstrict-prototypes
Committer notes:
This comes from the kernel's kbuild infrastructure, the subset that is
supported in tools/ is being documented at tools/build/Documentation/Build.txt.

I see problem with test-all case speedup, because it does not
comprise checks for 32bits compilations, fix it.
The problem could be noticed by calling:
make -C tools/perf feature-dump
That would end up misdetecting the feature-compile-x32, that, building
using 'gcc -mx32' needs stub headers not present in a fedora 23 devel
machine and thus fail to compile, but ended up appearing as detected,
i.e. present in tools/perf/FEATURE-DUMP as 'feature-compile-x32=1'.
With this fix it correctly appears as 'feature-compile-x32=0' and if we
uninstall the libc devel files for 32 bits (glibc-devel.i686), then the
relevant variable is flipped from 'feature-compile-32=1' to
'feature-compile-32=0'.
The same things happened for bionic and libbabeltrace, that were
misdetected because the are no tested in test-all.c

When building perf binaries outside the source tree with 'make O=<dir>',
the auto-detected features get re-tested for every build, which is
unnecessary and inconsistent with the behavior seen when building
directly in the source tree.
Another issue is that 'make O=<dir> clean' doesn't remove the feature
files from the object tree.
Fix these problems by looking for the binaries in the $(OUTPUT)

This is because the CFLAGS used in building perf pollutes the CFLAGS
used for fixdep, passing -fstack-protector-all to buiold fixdep which is
obviously not required. Since fixdep is a small host side tool, we
should keep its CFLAGS/LDFLAGS simple and clean.
This patch clears the CFLAGS and LDFLAGS passed when building fixdep, so
such gcc problem won't block the perf build process.

Any CFLAGS or LDFLAGS set by the user need to be passed to the feature
build command. This many include for example -I or -L to point to
libraries and include files in custom paths.
In most of the test-*.bin rules in build/feature/Makefile, we use the BUILD
macro which always sends in CFLAGS and LDFLAGS. The libiberty build line
however doesn't use the BUILD macro and thus needs to send in CFLAGS and
LDFLAGS explicitly. Without this, when using custom CFLAGS/LDFLAGS, libiberty
fails to be detected and the perf link fails with something like:

By adding libbpf into perf's Makefile, this patch enables perf to build
libbpf if libelf is found and neither NO_LIBELF nor NO_LIBBPF is set.
The newly introduced code is similar to how libapi and libtraceevent
are wired into Makefile.perf.
MANIFEST is also updated for 'make perf-*-src-pkg'.
Append make_no_libbpf to tools/perf/tests/make.
The 'bpf' feature check is appended into default FEATURE_TESTS and
FEATURE_DISPLAY, so perf will check the API version of bpf in
/path/to/kernel/include/uapi/linux/bpf.h. Which should not fail except
when we are trying to port this code to an old kernel.
Error messages are also updated to notify users about the lack of BPF
support in 'perf record' if libelf is missing or the BPF API check
failed.
tools/lib/bpf is added to TAG_FOLDERS to allow us to navigate libbpf
files when working on perf using tools/perf/tags.

For dependency tracking we currently use targets that fall out of the
gcc -MD command. We store this info in the .cmd file and include as
makefile during the build.
This format put object as target and all the c and header files as
dependencies, like:
util/abspath.o: util/abspath.c /usr/include/stdc-predef.h util/cache.h \
/usr/include/bits/wordsize.h /usr/include/gnu/stubs.h \
...
If any of those dependency header files (krava.h below) is removed the
build fails on:
make[1]: *** No rule to make target 'krava.h', needed by 'inc.o'. Stop.
This patch adds fixdep helper, that is used by kbuild to alter the shape
of the object dependencies like:
source_util/abspath.o := util/abspath.c
deps_util/abspath.o := \
/usr/include/stdc-predef.h \
util/cache.h \
...
util/abspath.o: $(deps_util/abspath.o)
$(deps_util/abspath.o):
With this format the header removal won't make the build fail, because
it'll be picked up by the last empty target defined for each header.
As previously mentioned the fixdep tool is taken from kbuild. It's not
complete backport, only the part that alters the standard dependency
info was taken, the part that adds the CONFIG_* dependency logic will be
probably taken later on.

reason is that the removed header file stays in the .cmd file target

and it is currently sharing the output directory with perf, that
also uses the feature detection logic.
As we keep state in the output directory, so that we can avoid running
all the tests again, we need to have different filenames for the files
used in this state, allow doing that via the FEATURE_USER variable, to
be set alongside the existing FEATURE_{TEST,DISPLAY} variables.

This is the first patch of libbpf. The goal of libbpf is to create a
standard way for accessing eBPF object files. This patch creates
'Makefile' and 'Build' for it, allows 'make' to build libbpf.a and
libbpf.so, 'make install' to put them into proper directories.
Most part of Makefile is borrowed from traceevent.
Before building, it checks the existence of libelf in Makefile, and deny
to build if not found. Instead of throwing an error if libelf not found,
the error raises in a phony target "elfdep". This design is to ensure
'make clean' still workable even if libelf is not found.
Because libbpf requires 'kern_version' field set for 'union bpf_attr'
(bpfdep" is used for that dependency), Kernel BPF API is also checked
by intruducing a new feature check 'bpf' into tools/build/feature,
which checks the existence and version of linux/bpf.h. When building
libbpf, it searches that file from include/uapi/linux in kernel source
tree (controlled by FEATURE_CHECK_CFLAGS-bpf). Since it searches kernel
source tree it reside, installing of newest kernel headers is not
required, except we are trying to port these files to an old kernel.
To avoid checking that file when perf building, the newly introduced
'bpf' feature check doesn't added into FEATURE_TESTS and
FEATURE_DISPLAY by default in tools/build/Makefile.feature, but added
into libbpf's specific.
