Justin reported broken build with LIBBPF_DYNAMIC=1.
When linking libbpf dynamically we need to use perf's
hashmap object, because it's not exported in libbpf.so
(only in libbpf.a).
Following build is now passing:
$ make LIBBPF_DYNAMIC=1
BUILD: Doing 'make -j8' parallel build
...
$ ldd perf | grep libbpf
libbpf.so.0 => /lib64/libbpf.so.0 (0x00007fa7630db000)

We were doing it in tools/build/Makefile.feature, after running the
feature checks, but then in tools/perf/Makefile.config we can call more
feature checks when we notice that some feature check failed, like when
libbfd wasn't detected and we add libraries to the LDFLAGS of its
feature check to try again, etc.

Feature detection is done in tools/build/Makefile.feature, we may exit
there with some features not detected and then, in
tools/perf/Makefile.config try adding extra libraries to link and then
do extra feature checks to see if we now find the feature.
This is the case with the disassembler-four-args that checks if the
diassembler() function in libopcodes (binutils) has a signature with
one or with four arguments, as this is not ABI and they changed it at
some point.
This is not a problem when doing normal builds, for instance:
$ make -C tools/perf O=/tmp/build/perf
As we don't use what is in FEATURE-DUMP at that point, but is a problem
if we pass FEATURE_DUMP=/previously-detected-features as we do in
'make -C tools/perf build-test' to reuse the feature detection in the
many build combinations we test there.
When that is done feature-disassembler-four-args will be set to 0, but
opensuse 15.1 has the four arguments function signature in
disassembler(). The build thus fails.
Fix it by rewriting the FEATURE-DUMP file at the end of
tools/perf/Makefile.config to register features we retested in that make
file.

Currently we support only static linking with kernel's libtraceevent
(tools/lib/traceevent). This patch adds libtraceevent package detection
and support to link perf with it dynamically.
The libtraceevent package status is displayed with:
$ make VF=1 LIBTRACEEVENT_DYNAMIC=1
...
... libtraceevent: [ on ]
Default behavior remains the same (static linking).
Committer testing:
$ make LIBTRACEEVENT_DYNAMIC=1 VF=1 O=/tmp/build/perf -C tools/perf install-bin |& grep traceevent
Makefile.config:1090: *** Error: No libtraceevent devel library found, please install libtraceevent-devel. Stop.

BPF programs are useful in perf to profile BPF programs.
BPF skeleton is by far the easiest way to write BPF tools. Enable
building BPF skeletons in util/bpf_skel. A dummy bpf skeleton is added.
More bpf skeletons will be added for different use cases.

Test results:
The first ones are container based builds of tools/perf with and without libelf
support. Where clang is available, it is also used to build perf with/without
libelf, and building with LIBCLANGLLVM=1 (built-in clang) with gcc and clang
when clang and its devel libraries are installed.
The objtool and samples/bpf/ builds are disabled now that I'm switching from
using the sources in a local volume to fetching them from a http server to
build it inside the container, to make it easier to build in a container cluster.
Those will come back later.
Several are cross builds, the ones with -x-ARCH and the android one, and those
may not have all the features built, due to lack of multi-arch devel packages,
available and being used so far on just a few, like
debian:experimental-x-{arm64,mipsel}.
The 'perf test' one will perform a variety of tests exercising
tools/perf/util/, tools/lib/{bpf,traceevent,etc}, as well as run perf commands
with a variety of command line event specifications to then intercept the
sys_perf_event syscall to check that the perf_event_attr fields are set up as
expected, among a variety of other unit tests.
Then there is the 'make -C tools/perf build-test' ones, that build tools/perf/
with a variety of feature sets, exercising the build with an incomplete set of
features as well as with a complete one. It is planned to have it run on each
of the containers mentioned above, using some container orchestration
infrastructure. Get in contact if interested in helping having this in place.

...
Add redirect_neigh() BPF packet redirect helper, allowing to limit stack
traversal in common container configs and improving TCP back-pressure.
Daniel reports ~10Gbps => ~15Gbps single stream TCP performance gain.
Expand netlink policy support and improve policy export to user space.
(Ge)netlink core performs request validation according to declared
policies. Expand the expressiveness of those policies (min/max length
and bitmasks). Allow dumping policies for particular commands.
This is used for feature discovery by user space (instead of kernel
version parsing or trial and error).
Support IGMPv3/MLDv2 multicast listener discovery protocols in bridge.
Allow more than 255 IPv4 multicast interfaces.
Add support for Type of Service (ToS) reflection in SYN/SYN-ACK
packets of TCPv6.
In Multi-patch TCP (MPTCP) support concurrent transmission of data
on multiple subflows in a load balancing scenario. Enhance advertising
addresses via the RM_ADDR/ADD_ADDR options.
Support SMC-Dv2 version of SMC, which enables multi-subnet deployments.
Allow more calls to same peer in RxRPC.
Support two new Controller Area Network (CAN) protocols -
CAN-FD and ISO 15765-2:2016.
Add xfrm/IPsec compat layer, solving the 32bit user space on 64bit
kernel problem.
Add TC actions for implementing MPLS L2 VPNs.
Improve nexthop code - e.g. handle various corner cases when nexthop
objects are removed from groups better, skip unnecessary notifications
and make it easier to offload nexthops into HW by converting
to a blocking notifier.
Support adding and consuming TCP header options by BPF programs,
opening the doors for easy experimental and deployment-specific
TCP option use.
Reorganize TCP congestion control (CC) initialization to simplify life
of TCP CC implemented in BPF.
Add support for shipping BPF programs with the kernel and loading them
early on boot via the User Mode Driver mechanism, hence reusing all the
user space infra we have.
Support sleepable BPF programs, initially targeting LSM and tracing.
Add bpf_d_path() helper for returning full path for given 'struct path'.
Make bpf_tail_call compatible with bpf-to-bpf calls.
Allow BPF programs to call map_update_elem on sockmaps.
Add BPF Type Format (BTF) support for type and enum discovery, as
well as support for using BTF within the kernel itself (current use
is for pretty printing structures).
Support listing and getting information about bpf_links via the bpf
syscall.
Enhance kernel interfaces around NIC firmware update. Allow specifying
overwrite mask to control if settings etc. are reset during update;
report expected max time operation may take to users; support firmware
activation without machine reboot incl. limits of how much impact
reset may have (e.g. dropping link or not).
Extend ethtool configuration interface to report IEEE-standard
counters, to limit the need for per-vendor logic in user space.
Adopt or extend devlink use for debug, monitoring, fw update
in many drivers (dsa loop, ice, ionic, sja1105, qed, mlxsw,
mv88e6xxx, dpaa2-eth).
In mlxsw expose critical and emergency SFP module temperature alarms.
Refactor port buffer handling to make the defaults more suitable and
support setting these values explicitly via the DCBNL interface.
Add XDP support for Intel's igb driver.
Support offloading TC flower classification and filtering rules to
mscc_ocelot switches.
Add PTP support for Marvell Octeontx2 and PP2.2 hardware, as well as
fixed interval period pulse generator and one-step timestamping in
dpaa-eth.
Add support for various auth offloads in WiFi APs, e.g. SAE (WPA3)
offload.
Add Lynx PHY/PCS MDIO module, and convert various drivers which have
this HW to use it. Convert mvpp2 to split PCS.
Support Marvell Prestera 98DX3255 24-port switch ASICs, as well as
7-port Mediatek MT7531 IP.
Add initial support for QCA6390 and IPQ6018 in ath11k WiFi driver,
and wcn3680 support in wcn36xx.
Improve performance for packets which don't require much offloads
on recent Mellanox NICs by 20% by making multiple packets share
a descriptor entry.
Move chelsio inline crypto drivers (for TLS and IPsec) from the crypto
subtree to drivers/net. Move MDIO drivers out of the phy directory.
Clean up a lot of W=1 warnings, reportedly the actively developed
subsections of networking drivers should now build W=1 warning free.
Make sure drivers don't use in_interrupt() to dynamically adapt their
code. Convert tasklets to use new tasklet_setup API (sadly this
conversion is not yet complete).

is for pretty printing structures).
- Support listing and getting information about bpf_links via the bpf
syscall.
- Enhance kernel interfaces around NIC firmware update. Allow
specifying overwrite mask to control if settings etc. are reset
during update; report expected max time operation may take to users;
support firmware activation without machine reboot incl. limits of
how much impact reset may have (e.g. dropping link or not).
- Extend ethtool configuration interface to report IEEE-standard
counters, to limit the need for per-vendor logic in user space.
- Adopt or extend devlink use for debug, monitoring, fw update in many
drivers (dsa loop, ice, ionic, sja1105, qed, mlxsw, mv88e6xxx,
dpaa2-eth).
- In mlxsw expose critical and emergency SFP module temperature alarms.
Refactor port buffer handling to make the defaults more suitable and
support setting these values explicitly via the DCBNL interface.
- Add XDP support for Intel's igb driver.
- Support offloading TC flower classification and filtering rules to
mscc_ocelot switches.
- Add PTP support for Marvell Octeontx2 and PP2.2 hardware, as well as
fixed interval period pulse generator and one-step timestamping in
dpaa-eth.
- Add support for various auth offloads in WiFi APs, e.g. SAE (WPA3)
offload.
- Add Lynx PHY/PCS MDIO module, and convert various drivers which have
this HW to use it. Convert mvpp2 to split PCS.
- Support Marvell Prestera 98DX3255 24-port switch ASICs, as well as
7-port Mediatek MT7531 IP.
- Add initial support for QCA6390 and IPQ6018 in ath11k WiFi driver,
and wcn3680 support in wcn36xx.
- Improve performance for packets which don't require much offloads on
recent Mellanox NICs by 20% by making multiple packets share a
descriptor entry.
- Move chelsio inline crypto drivers (for TLS and IPsec) from the
crypto subtree to drivers/net. Move MDIO drivers out of the phy
directory.
- Clean up a lot of W=1 warnings, reportedly the actively developed
subsections of networking drivers should now build W=1 warning free.
- Make sure drivers don't use in_interrupt() to dynamically adapt their
code. Convert tasklets to use new tasklet_setup API (sadly this
conversion is not yet complete).

Some distros don't come with python2 and only have python3 available.
This causes the "'import perf' in python" self test to fail.
This change adds python3 to the list of possible python versions
that are autodetected but maintains the priorities for
'python2' and 'python' detection. Python3 has the lowest priority.
Committer notes:
On a fedora system without python2 packages the 'perf test python'
continues to work:
# python2
bash: python2: command not found...
Similar command is: 'python'
# rpm -qa | grep python2
#
That "Similar command" gives the clue:
# rpm -qf /usr/bin/python
python-unversioned-command-3.8.5-5.fc32.noarch
# rpm -ql python-unversioned-command
/usr/bin/python
/usr/share/man/man1/python.1.gz
#
With it in place the 'python' binary is found and perf builds the python
binding using python3:
# perf test -v python
19: 'import perf' in python :
--- start ---
test child forked, pid 379988
python usage test: "echo "import sys ; sys.path.append('/tmp/build/perf/python'); import perf" | '/usr/bin/python' "
test child finished with 0

Currently BUILD_BUG() macro is expanded to smth like the following:
do {
extern void __compiletime_assert_0(void)
__attribute__((error("BUILD_BUG failed")));
if (!(!(1)))
__compiletime_assert_0();
} while (0);
If used in a function body this obviously would produce build errors
with -Wnested-externs and -Werror.
To enable BUILD_BUG() usage in tools/arch/x86/lib/insn.c which perf
includes in intel-pt-decoder, build perf without -Wnested-externs.

This is bitrotting, nobody is stepping up to work on it, and since we
treat warnings as errors, feature detection is failing in its main,
faster test (tools/build/feature/test-all.c) because of the GTK+2
infobar check.
So make this opt-in, at some point ditch this if nobody volunteers to
take care of this.

It's trivial to handle missing ELF_C_MMAP_READ support in libelf the way that
objtool has solved it in
("774bec3fddcc objtool: Add fallback from ELF_C_READ_MMAP to ELF_C_READ").
So instead of having an entire feature detector for that, just do what objtool
does for perf and libbpf. And keep their Makefiles a bit simpler.

This patch links perf with the libpfm4 library if it is available and
LIBPFM4 is passed to the build. The libpfm4 library contains hardware
event tables for all processors supported by perf_events. It is a helper
library that helps convert from a symbolic event name to the event
encoding required by the underlying kernel interface. This library is
open-source and available from: http://perfmon2.sf.net.
With this patch, it is possible to specify full hardware events by name.
Hardware filters are also supported. Events must be specified via the
--pfm-events and not -e option. Both options are active at the same time
and it is possible to mix and match:
$ perf stat --pfm-events inst_retired:any_p:c=1:i -e cycles ....
One needs to explicitely ask for its inclusion by using the LIBPFM4 make
command line option, ie its opt-in rather than opt-out of feature
detection and build support.

The libaudit test is forced and it fails when audit-libs-devel isn't available:

test-libaudit.c:2:10: fatal error: libaudit.h: No such file or directory
2 | #include <libaudit.h>

compilation terminated.
$
If we install audit-libs-devel and rebuild it continues not to be shown as OFF
in the main auto-detection summary, but again gets tested and this time:
$ rpm -q audit-libs-devel
audit-libs-devel-3.0-0.15.20191104git1c2f876.fc31.x86_64
$
The make output for the feature detection comes clean:
$ cat /tmp/build/perf/feature/test-libaudit.make.output
And the feature detection binary is successfully built and is dynamicly linked
with libaudit:
$ ldd /tmp/build/perf/feature/test-libaudit.bin | grep audit
libaudit.so.1 => /lib64/libaudit.so.1 (0x00007f5bf5177000)
$
As well as the resulting perf binary:
$ ldd /tmp/build/perf/perf | grep audit
libaudit.so.1 => /lib64/libaudit.so.1 (0x00007fad511c7000)
$
And 'perf trace' works using the libaudit method:
$ sudo /tmp/build/perf/perf trace -e nanosleep sleep 1
0.000 (1000.067 ms): sleep/281872 nanosleep(rqtp: 0x7ffedbbe69d0) = 0
$
If we leave audit-libs-devel installed but don't disable the use of the best
method, the one using SYSCALL_TABLE, the default for architectures that provide
the script to build the syscall id/name mapping using the .tbl files copied
from the kernel sources, we get:
$ rm -rf /tmp/build/perf ; mkdir -p /tmp/build/perf
$ make -C tools/perf O=/tmp/build/perf

Python 3.8 changed the output of 'python-config --ldflags' to no longer
include the '-lpythonX.Y' flag (this apparently fixed an issue loading
modules with a statically linked Python executable). The libpython
feature check in linux/build/feature fails if the Python library is not
included in FEATURE_CHECK_LDFLAGS-libpython variable.
This adds a check in the Makefile to determine if PYTHON_CONFIG accepts
the '--embed' flag and passes that flag alongside '--ldflags' if so.
tools/perf is the only place the libpython feature check is used.

The file handle (FHANDLE) support is configurable so some systems might not
have it. So add a config feature item to check it on build time so that we
don't add the cgroup tracking feature based on that.
Committer notes:
Had to make the test use the same construct as its later use in
synthetic-events.c, in the next patch in this series. i.e. make it be:
struct {
struct file_handle fh;
uint64_t cgroup_id;
} handle;
To cope with:
CC /tmp/build/perf/util/cloexec.o
util/synthetic-events.c:428:22: error: field 'fh' with CC /tmp/build/perf/util/call-path.o
variable sized type 'struct file_handle' not at the end of a struct or class is a GNU
extension [-Werror,-Wgnu-variable-sized-type-not-at-end]
struct file_handle fh;
^
1 error generated.
Deal with this at some point, i.e. investigate if the right thing is to
remove that -Wgnu-variable-sized-type-not-at-end from our CFLAGS, for
now do the test the same way as it is used looks more sensible.

Currently we support only static linking with kernel's libbpf
(tools/lib/bpf). This patch adds libbpf package detection and support to
link perf with it dynamically.
The libbpf package status is displayed with:
$ make VF=1
Auto-detecting system features:
...
... libbpf: [ on ]
It's not checked by default, because it's quite new. Once it's on most
distros we can switch it on.
For the same reason it's not added to the test-all check.
Perf does not need advanced version of libbpf, so we can check just for
the base bpf_object__open function.
Adding new compile variable to detect libbpf package and link bpf
dynamically:
$ make LIBBPF_DYNAMIC=1
...
LINK perf
$ ldd perf | grep bpf
libbpf.so.0 => /lib64/libbpf.so.0 (0x00007f46818bc000)
If libbpf is not installed, build stops with:
Makefile.config:486: *** Error: No libbpf devel library found,\

The next cset will grap const.h copies from the kernel to keep bits.h
in sync as it started to use linux/const.h, that in turn includes
uapi/linux/const.h.
So now we have a file with the same name in tools/include and
tools/uapi/include, and one includes the other, we need to have
tools/include/uapi/ after tools/include/ for this to work, fix it.

In some distros slang.h may be in a /usr/include 'slang' subdir, so use
the if slang is not explicitely disabled (by using NO_SLANG=1) and its
feature test for the common case (having /usr/include/slang.h) failed,
use the results for the test that checks if it is in slang/slang.h.
Change the only file in perf that includes slang.h to use
HAVE_SLANG_INCLUDE_SUBDIR and forget about this for good.
On a rhel6 system now we have:
$ /tmp/build/perf/perf -vv | grep slang
libslang: [ on ] # HAVE_SLANG_SUPPORT
$ ldd /tmp/build/perf/perf | grep libslang
libslang.so.2 => /usr/lib64/libslang.so.2 (0x00007fa2d5a8d000)
$ grep slang /tmp/build/perf/FEATURE-DUMP
feature-libslang=0
feature-libslang-include-subdir=1
$ cat /etc/redhat-release

$
While on fedora:29:
$ /tmp/build/perf/perf -vv | grep slang
libslang: [ on ] # HAVE_SLANG_SUPPORT
$ ldd /tmp/build/perf/perf | grep slang

$
$ cat /etc/fedora-release

The feature-libslang-include-subdir=1 line is because the 'gettid()'
test was added to test-all.c as the new glibc has an implementation for
that, so we soon should have it not failing, i.e. should be the common
case soon. Perhaps I should move it out till it becomes the norm...

Hardcoding /usr/include/slang is fundamentally incompatible with cross
compilation and will lead to the inability for a cross-compiled
environment to properly detect whether slang is available or not.
If /usr/include/slang is necessary that is a distribution specific
knowledge that could be solved with either a standard pkg-config .pc
file (which slang has) or simply overriding CFLAGS accordingly, but the
default perf Makefile should be clean of all of that.

When operating in CPU-wide trace mode with a source/sink topology of N:1
packets with multiple traceID will end up in the same cs_etm_queue. In
order to properly decode packets they need to be split in different
queues, i.e one queue per traceID.
As such add support for multiple traceID per cs_etm_queue by adding a
new cs_etm_traceid_queue every time a new traceID is discovered in the
trace stream.

Implement libzstd feature check, NO_LIBZSTD and LIBZSTD_DIR defines to
override Zstd library sources or disable the feature from the command
line:
$ make -C tools/perf LIBZSTD_DIR=/path/to/zstd/sources/ clean all
$ make -C tools/perf NO_LIBZSTD=1 clean all
Auto detection feature status is reported just before compilation
starts. If your system has some version of the zstd library
preinstalled then the build system finds and uses it during the build.
If you still prefer to compile with some other version of zstd library
you have capability to refer the compilation to that version using
LIBZSTD_DIR define.

Commit 003ca0fd2286 ("Refactor disassembler selection") in the binutils
repo, which changed the disassembler() function signature, so we must
use the feature test introduced in fb982666e3 ("tools/bpftool: fix
bpftool build with bintutils >= 2.9") to deal with that.
Committer testing:
After adding the missing function call to test-all.c, and:
FEATURE_CHECK_LDFLAGS-disassembler-four-args = -bfd -lopcodes
And the fallbacks for cases where we need -liberty and sometimes -lz to
tools/perf/Makefile.config, we get:
$ make -C tools/perf O=/tmp/build/perf install-bin

Both libbfd and libopcodes are distributed with binutil-dev/devel. When
libbfd is present, it is OK to assume that libopcodes also present. This
has been a safe assumption for bpftool.
This patch adds -lopcodes to perf/Makefile.config. libopcodes will be
used in the next commit for BPF annotation.

When the libcrypto feature test was added we forgot to add its
FEATURE_CHECK_LDFLAGS pointing to the library needed to link with the
test-all.bin feature test fast path binary, so even when it was
introduced we got this:
$ cat /tmp/build/perf/feature/test-all.make.output
/usr/bin/ld: /tmp/ccjKeJJU.o: in function `main_test_libcrypto':
/home/acme/git/perf/tools/build/feature/test-libcrypto.c:10: undefined reference to `MD5_Init'

/usr/bin/ld: /home/acme/git/perf/tools/build/feature/test-libcrypto.c:14: undefined reference to `SHA1'
collect2: error: ld returned 1 exit status
$ cat /tmp/build/perf/feature/test-libcrypto.
test-libcrypto.bin test-libcrypto.d test-libcrypto.make.output
$ cat /tmp/build/perf/feature/test-libcrypto.make.output
$
Fix it, so that we keep the fast path, which, at this point, will fail
with the unwind-ARCH feature tests, that will be fixed in a followup
patch:
$ make -C tools/perf O=/tmp/build/perf
... libcrypto: [ on ]
<SNIP>
$ cat /tmp/build/perf/feature/test-all.make.output
$ ldd /tmp/build/perf/feature/test-all.bin | grep libcrypto

$
$ grep libcrypto /tmp/build/perf/FEATURE-DUMP
feature-libcrypto=1
$
With the unwind-ARCH tests fixed, we now finally manage to get
test-all.bin built and linked with the features it tests, among them the
ones fixed in this patchkit:
$ ldd /tmp/build/perf/feature/test-all.bin | egrep 'unwind|crypto'

As it is not normally available on x86_64 not being tested on test-all.c
but being in FEATURE_TESTS_BASIC ends up implying that those features
are present, which leads to trying to link with those libraries and a
build failure now that test-all.c is finally again building
successfully:
/usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lunwind-x86
/usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lunwind-aarch64
collect2: error: ld returned 1 exit status
make[3]: *** [Makefile:199: /tmp/build/perf/plugin_jbd2.so] Error 1
make[3]: *** Waiting for unfinished jobs....
/usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lunwind-x86
/usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lunwind-aarch64
So remove those features from there and explicitely test them.
And then move this patch to just before the last one that allows this to
be exposed, so that we keep the tree bisectable.
With all this in place we get, at this point:

See:
6ab2b762be ("perf build: Disable libbabeltrace check by default")
For the rationale, as soon as libopencsd becomes more generally packaged
and available, we do the same thing we did with babeltrace, enabling it
by default, as done in:
24787afbcd ("perf tools: Enable LIBBABELTRACE by default")
For now, to explicitely ask for opencsd, make sure you have it installed
and use:
make -C tools/perf CORESIGHT=1
The feature test output will be there as an empty file:
$ ls -la /tmp/build/perf/feature/test-libopencsd.make.output
Because the binary used for the feature check was successfully built:

And the resulting perf binary will be linked with it:

$ ldd ~/bin/perf | grep opencsd
