On kernel 6.1-rcX, I have been getting the following dmesg error message
on every boot, resume from suspend and rfkill unblock of the Bluetooth
device:
Bluetooth: hci0: HCI_REQ-0xfcf0
After some investigation, it turned out to be caused by
commit dd50a864ff ("Bluetooth: Delete unreferenced hci_request code")
which modified hci_req_add() in net/bluetooth/hci_request.c to always
print an error message when it is executed. In my case, the function was
executed by msft_set_filter_enable() in net/bluetooth/msft.c, which
provides support for Microsoft vendor opcodes.
As explained by Brian Gix, "the error gets logged because it is using a
deprecated (but still working) mechanism to issue HCI opcodes" [1]. So
this is just a debugging tool to show that a deprecated function is
executed. As such, it should not be included in the mainline kernel.
See for example
commit 771c035372 ("deprecate the '__deprecated' attribute warnings entirely and for good")
Additionally, this error message is cryptic and the user is not able to
do anything about it.

hci_abort_conn() is a wrapper around a number of DISCONNECT and
CREATE_CONN_CANCEL commands that was being invoked from hci_request
request queues, which are now deprecated. There are two versions:
hci_abort_conn() which can be invoked from the hci_event thread, and
hci_abort_conn_sync() which can be invoked within a hci_sync cmd chain.

The bluetooth code uses our bitmap infrastructure for the two bits (!)
of connection setup flags, and in the process causes odd problems when
it converts between a bitmap and just the regular values of said bits.
It's completely pointless to do things like bitmap_to_arr32() to convert
a bitmap into a u32. It shoudln't have been a bitmap in the first
place. The reason to use bitmaps is if you have arbitrary number of
bits you want to manage (not two!), or if you rely on the atomicity
guarantees of the bitmap setting and clearing.
The code could use an "atomic_t" and use "atomic_or/andnot()" to set and
clear the bit values, but considering that it then copies the bitmaps
around with "bitmap_to_arr32()" and friends, there clearly cannot be a
lot of atomicity requirements.
So just use a regular integer.
In the process, this avoids the warnings about erroneous use of
bitmap_from_u64() which were triggered on 32-bit architectures when
conversion from a u64 would access two words (and, surprise, surprise,
only one word is needed - and indeed overkill - for a 2-bit bitmap).
That was always problematic, but the compiler seems to notice it and
warn about the invalid pattern only after commit 0a97953fd2 ("lib: add
bitmap_{from,to}_arr64") changed the exact implementation details of
'bitmap_from_u64()', as reported by Sudip Mukherjee and Stephen Rothwell.

called under the hdev lock. Paths that leads to an unlocked call are:
discov_update => start_discovery => interleaved_discov => active_scan
and: discov_update => start_discovery => active_scan
The solution is to take the lock in active_scan during the duration of

The usage of __hci_cmd_sync() within the hdev->setup() callback allows for
a nice and simple serialized execution of HCI commands. More importantly
it allows for result processing before issueing the next command.
With the current usage of hci_req_run() it is possible to batch up
commands and execute them, but it is impossible to react to their
results or errors.
This is an attempt to generalize the hdev->setup() handling and provide
a simple way of running multiple HCI commands from a single function
context.
There are multiple struct work that are decdicated to certain tasks
already used right now. It is add a lot of bloat to hci_dev struct and
extra handling code. So it might be possible to put all of these behind
a common HCI command infrastructure and just execute the HCI commands
from the same work context in a serialized fashion.
For example updating the white list and resolving list can be done now
without having to know the list size ahead of time. Also preparing for
suspend or resume shouldn't require a state machine anymore. There are
other tasks that should be simplified as well.

During system suspend, advertisement monitoring is disabled by setting
the HCI_VS_MSFT_LE_Set_Advertisement_Filter_Enable to False. This
disables the monitoring during suspend, however, if the controller is
monitoring a device, it sends HCI_VS_MSFT_LE_Monitor_Device_Event to
indicate that the monitoring has been stopped for that particular
device. This event may occur after suspend depending on the
low_threshold_timeout and peer device advertisement frequency, which
causes early wake up.
Right way to disable the monitoring for suspend is by removing all the
monitors before suspend and re-monitor after resume to ensure no events
are received during suspend. This patch fixes this suspend/resume issue.
Following tests are performed:
- Add monitors before suspend and make sure DeviceFound gets triggered
- Suspend the system and verify that all monitors are removed by kernel
but not Released by bluetoothd
- Wake up and verify that all monitors are added again and DeviceFound
gets triggered

the following reasons. The scanning includes active scan and passive

For HW pattern filtering (ex. MSFT), Realtek and Qualcomm controllers
ignore RSSI_Sampling_Period when the duplicates filter is enabled.
For SW pattern filtering, when we're not doing interleaved scanning, it
is necessary to disable duplicates filter, otherwise hosts can only
receive one advertisement and it's impossible to know if a peer is still

There is a possible race condition vulnerability between issuing a HCI
command and removing the cont. Specifically, functions hci_req_sync()
and hci_dev_do_close() can race each other like below:
thread-A in hci_req_sync() | thread-B in hci_dev_do_close()
| hci_req_sync_lock(hdev);
test_bit(HCI_UP, &hdev->flags); |
... | test_and_clear_bit(HCI_UP, &hdev->flags)
hci_req_sync_lock(hdev); |
|
In this commit we alter the sequence in function hci_req_sync(). Hence,
the thread-A cannot issue th.

There is a possibility where HCI_INQUIRY flag is set but we still
send HCI_OP_INQUIRY anyway.
Such a case can be reproduced by connecting to an LE device while
active scanning. When the device is discovered, we initiate a
connection, stop LE Scan, and send Discovery MGMT with status
disabled, but we don't cancel the inquiry.

Not cancelling it has caused a bug where passive background scanning is
disabled out of the blue, preventing BLE keyboards/mice to reconnect.
Here is how it happens:
After hci_req_stop_discovery, there is still le_scan_restart_work
scheduled. Invocation of le_scan_restart_work causes a harmful
le_scan_disable_work to be scheduled. This le_scan_disable_work will
eventually disable passive scanning when the timer fires.

An issue was found, where if a bluetooth client requests a broadcast
advertisement with scan response data, it will not be properly
registered with the controller. This is because at the time that the
hci_cp_le_set_scan_param structure is created, the scan response will
not yet have been received since it comes in a second MGMT call. With
empty scan response, the request defaults to a non-scannable PDU type.
On some controllers, the subsequent scan response request will fail due
to incorrect PDU type, and others will succeed and not use the scan
response.
This fix allows the advertising parameters MGMT call to include a flag
to let the kernel know whether a scan response will be coming, so that
the correct PDU type is used in the first place. A bluetoothd change is
also incoming to take advantage of it.
To test this, I created a broadcast advertisement with scan response
data and registered it on the hatch chromebook. Without this change, the
request fails, and with it will succeed.
