Steve Longerbeam f21ee2d424 [ARM] 2867/2: unaligned ldrd/strd fixups
Patch from Steve Longerbeam

Adds an implementation of unaligned LDRD and STRD fixups.
Also fixes a bug where do_alignment() would misinterpret and
fixup an unaligned LDRD/STRD as LDRH/STRH, causing memory
corruption.
This is the same as Patch #2867/1, but with minor whitespace
and comments changes, plus a check for arch-level >= v5TE
before printing ai_dword count in proc_alignment_read().

Deepak Saxena 083bc6b3c9 [ARM] 2853/1: Make alloc_init_supersection() work with 36-bit mappings
Patch from Deepak Saxena

Working on adding support for 36-bit static mappings for ARMv6 and
Intel's XSC3 core and noticed that alloc_init_supersection currently
increments the phys addr by 1MB on each of the 16 iterations and then
forces alignment to supersection size (16MB).  This is really uneeded
b/c we have already forced the phys address to be 16MB aligned in
create_mapping(). Furthermore, this breaks 36-bit addressing b/c bits
[23:20] of the PMD contain bits [35:32] of the physical address and
the masking causes us to loose those bits thus ending up with an
incorrect virt -> phys translation.  The other option is to have an
alloc_init_supersection36.
Tested on Intel IXP2350 CPU with 36-bit static I/O mappings.

Steven Rostedt 69be8f1896 [PATCH] convert signal handling of NODEFER to act like other Unix boxes.
It has been reported that the way Linux handles NODEFER for signals is
not consistent with the way other Unix boxes handle it.  I've written a
program to test the behavior of how this flag affects signals and had
several reports from people who ran this on various Unix boxes,
confirming that Linux seems to be unique on the way this is handled.

The way NODEFER affects signals on other Unix boxes is as follows:

1) If NODEFER is set, other signals in sa_mask are still blocked.

2) If NODEFER is set and the signal is in sa_mask, then the signal is
still blocked. (Note: this is the behavior of all tested but Linux _and_
NetBSD 2.0 *).

The way NODEFER affects signals on Linux:

1) If NODEFER is set, other signals are _not_ blocked regardless of
sa_mask (Even NetBSD doesn't do this).

2) If NODEFER is set and the signal is in sa_mask, then the signal being
handled is not blocked.

The patch converts signal handling in all current Linux architectures to
the way most Unix boxes work.

Unix boxes that were tested:  DU4, AIX 5.2, Irix 6.5, NetBSD 2.0, SFU
3.5 on WinXP, AIX 5.3, Mac OSX, and of course Linux 2.6.13-rcX.

* NetBSD was the only other Unix to behave like Linux on point #2. The
main concern was brought up by point #1 which even NetBSD isn't like
Linux.  So with this patch, we leave NetBSD as the lonely one that
behaves differently here with #2.

Deepak Saxena 1c9cf6f986 [PATCH] arm: fix IXP4xx flash resource range
We are currently reserving one byte more than actually needed by the flash
device and overlapping into the next I/O expansion bus window.  This a)
causes us to allocate an extra page of VM due to ARM ioremap() alignment
code and b) could cause problems if another driver tries to request the
next expansion bus window.

Dimitry Andric 62ee914ef2 [ARM] 2850/1: Remove duplicate UART I/O mapping from s3c2410_iodesc

This patch removes the initial UART I/O mapping from s3c2410_iodesc,
since the same mapping is already done in the function s3c24xx_init_io
in the file arch/arm/mach-s3c2410/cpu.c, through the s3c_iodesc array.
I'm not sure if duplicate mappings do any harm, but it's simply
redundant.  Also, in s3c2440.c the UART I/O mapping is NOT done.
Additionally, I put a comma behind the last mapping, to ease
copy/pasting stuff around, and make the style consistent with
s3c2440.c and other files.

Russell King 6626a7076d [ARM] Control v6 'global' bit via Linux PTE entries
Unfortunately, we can't use the "user" bit in the page tables to
control whether a page table entry is "global" or "asid" specific,
since the vector page is mapped as "user" accessible but is not
process specific.

Therefore, give direct control of the ARMv6 "nG" (not global)
bit to the mm layers.

Dominik Brodowski 43c3473552 [PATCH] pci and yenta: pcibios_bus_to_resource
In yenta_socket, we default to using the resource setting of the CardBus
bridge.  However, this is a PCI-bus-centric view of resources and thus needs
to be converted to generic resources first.  Therefore, add a call to
pcibios_bus_to_resource() call in between.  This function is a mere wrapper on
x86 and friends, however on some others it already exists, is added in this
patch (alpha, arm, ppc, ppc64) or still needs to be provided (parisc -- where
is its pcibios_resource_to_bus() ?).

Richard Purdie f148af2593 [PATCH] ARM: 2837/2: Re: ARM: Make NWFPE preempt safe

NWFPE used global variables which meant it wasn't safe for use with
preemptive kernels. This patch removes them and communicates the
information between functions in a preempt safe manner. Generation
of some exceptions was broken and this has also been corrected.
Tests with glibc's maths test suite show no change in the results
before/after this patch.

Since the secondary CPUs will not be operating in symetric mode
while they are held in the pen, we need to ensure that the write
to pen_release is visible to them, by flushing the cache.

Russell King 505d7b1931 [ARM SMP] Ensure secondary CPUs have a clean TLB
Since ARMv6 CPUs will not flush the TLB on context switches, it is
possible that we may end up with some global TLB entries remaining
present, eventually upsetting userspace.  Explicitly flush the
entire TLB on secondary CPUs as they startup, after we have switched
to the init_mm page tables.

machine_restart, machine_halt and machine_power_off are machine
specific hooks deep into the reboot logic, that modules
have no business messing with.  Usually code should be calling
kernel_restart, kernel_halt, kernel_power_off, or
emergency_restart. So don't export machine_restart,
machine_halt, and machine_power_off so we can catch buggy users.

Since we now ensure that the kernel stack is empty when returning
to user space, we can now access the userspace registers with
reference to the kernel stack using current_thread_info(), rather

Sam Ravnborg d5950b4355 [NET]: add a top-level Networking menu to *config
Create a new top-level menu named "Networking" thus moving
net related options and protocol selection way from the drivers
menu and up on the top-level where they belong.

To implement this all architectures has to source "net/Kconfig" before
drivers/*/Kconfig in their Kconfig file. This change has been
implemented for all architectures.

Device drivers for ordinary NIC's are still to be found
in the Device Drivers section, but Bluetooth, IrDA and ax25
are located with their corresponding menu entries under the new
networking menu item.

This patch implements the iomap API for Intel IXP4xx NPU systems.
We need to implement our own version of the API functions b/c of the
PCI hostbridge does not provide the capability to map PCI I/O space
into the CPU's physical memory space. In addition, if a system has
more than 64M of PCI memory mapped BARs, PCI memory must also be
accessed indirectly.  This patch changes the assignment of PCI I/O
resources to fall into to 0x0000:0xffff range so that we can trap
I/O areas in our ioread/iowrite macros.

David Brownell 313980c927 [PATCH] USB: omap_udc updates (mostly cleanups)
Various USB patches, mostly for portability:

  - Fifo mode 1 didn't work previously (oopsed), so now it's fixed and
    (why not) defines even more endpoints for composite devices.

  - OMAP 1710 doesn't have an internal transceiver.

  - Small PM update:  if the USB link is suspended, don't disconnect on
    entry to deep sleep.

  - Be more correct about handling zero length control reads.  OMAP
    seems to mis-handle that protocol peculiarity though; best avoided.

  - Platform device resources (for UDC and OTG controllers) now use
    physical addresses, so /proc/iomem is more consistent.

  - Minor cleanups, notably (by volume) for "sparse" NULL warnings.

Russell King 8749af6821 [PATCH] ARM: Generic Dynamic Tick Timer support for ARM, take 4
This patch adds support for Dynamic Tick Timer for ARM. Dynamic Tick is
also known as VST (Variable Scheduling Timeouts).

Dynamic Tick has been in use in the OMAP tree since last October.  The
patch is not intrusive, and does not do anything unless CONFIG_NO_IDLE_HZ
is defined.  This patch has the following fixed based on comments from
RMK:
- Time is updated before calling interrupt handlers.
- Added new interrupt flag SA_TIMER to avoid duplicate timer interrupts
- Moved struct dyn_tick_timer to time.h until we at some point probably
  have an arch independent dyn-tick.h
- Cleaned up testing for DYN_TICK_ENABLED in irq.c

 I've cleaned up this patch to fix some remaining issues:
 - Call the timer tick handler with irqs disabled, as it would be from
   a normal interrupt
 - if we have a dyn_tick, we better implement all methods.
 - generic timer_dyn_reprogram() call, to be called before sleeping
 - added command line option - "dyntick=" to allow boot-time control
   of this feature

Ian Campbell 0f8e2d62fa [PATCH] use ${CROSS_COMPILE}installkernel in arch/*/boot/install.sh
The attached patch causes the various arch specific install.sh scripts to
look for ${CROSS_COMPILE}installkernel rather than just installkernel (in
both /sbin/ and ~/bin/ where the script already did this).  This allows you
to have e.g.  arm-linux-installkernel as a handy way to install on your
cross target.  It also prevents the script picking up on the host
/sbin/installkernel which causes the script to fall through and do the
install itself (which is what I actually use myself, with $INSTALL_PATH
set).

I don't believe it causes back-compatibility problems since calling the
host installkernel was never likely to work or be what you wanted when
cross compiling anyway.  If $CROSS_COMPILE isn't set then nothing changes.

I only use ARM and i386 myself but I figured it couldn't hurt to do the
whole lot.  I've cc'd those who I hope are the arch maintainers for files
that I've touched.

Dave Hansen 3f22ab276b [PATCH] make each arch use mm/Kconfig
For all architectures, this just means that you'll see a "Memory Model"
choice in your architecture menu.  For those that implement DISCONTIGMEM,
you may eventually want to make your ARCH_DISCONTIGMEM_ENABLE a "def_bool
y" and make your users select DISCONTIGMEM right out of the new choice
menu.  The only disadvantage might be if you have some specific things that
you need in your help option to explain something about DISCONTIGMEM.

Wolfgang Wander 1363c3cd86 [PATCH] Avoiding mmap fragmentation
Ingo recently introduced a great speedup for allocating new mmaps using the
free_area_cache pointer which boosts the specweb SSL benchmark by 4-5% and
causes huge performance increases in thread creation.

The downside of this patch is that it does lead to fragmentation in the
mmap-ed areas (visible via /proc/self/maps), such that some applications
that work fine under 2.4 kernels quickly run out of memory on any 2.6
kernel.

The problem is twofold:

  1) the free_area_cache is used to continue a search for memory where
     the last search ended.  Before the change new areas were always
     searched from the base address on.

     So now new small areas are cluttering holes of all sizes
     throughout the whole mmap-able region whereas before small holes
     tended to close holes near the base leaving holes far from the base
     large and available for larger requests.

  2) the free_area_cache also is set to the location of the last
     munmap-ed area so in scenarios where we allocate e.g.  five regions of
     1K each, then free regions 4 2 3 in this order the next request for 1K
     will be placed in the position of the old region 3, whereas before we
     appended it to the still active region 1, placing it at the location
     of the old region 2.  Before we had 1 free region of 2K, now we only
     get two free regions of 1K -> fragmentation.

The patch addresses thes issues by introducing yet another cache descriptor
cached_hole_size that contains the largest known hole size below the
current free_area_cache.  If a new request comes in the size is compared
against the cached_hole_size and if the request can be filled with a hole
below free_area_cache the search is started from the base instead.

The results look promising: Whereas 2.6.12-rc4 fragments quickly and my
(earlier posted) leakme.c test program terminates after 50000+ iterations
with 96 distinct and fragmented maps in /proc/self/maps it performs nicely
(as expected) with thread creation, Ingo's test_str02 with 20000 threads
requires 0.7s system time.

Taking out Ingo's patch (un-patch available per request) by basically
deleting all mentions of free_area_cache from the kernel and starting the
search for new memory always at the respective bases we observe: leakme
terminates successfully with 11 distinctive hardly fragmented areas in
/proc/self/maps but thread creating is gringdingly slow: 30+s(!) system
time for Ingo's test_str02 with 20000 threads.

Now - drumroll ;-) the appended patch works fine with leakme: it ends with
only 7 distinct areas in /proc/self/maps and also thread creation seems
sufficiently fast with 0.71s for 20000 threads.

The IXP2000 has four timers, but if we're on an A-step IXP2800, timer
2 and 3 don't work.  We need two timers for timekeeping (one for the
timer interrupt and one for tracking missed jiffies), so on early
IXP2800s we have no other choice but to use timer 1 and 4 for that,
but on all other IXP2000s we'd rather leave timer 4 free since that's
the only timer we can use for the watchdog.
So, on buggy IXP2000s (i.e. the A-step IXP2800) we use timer 4 for
tracking missed jiffies, and on all all non-buggy IXP2000s (i.e.
everything but the A-step IXP2800) we use timer 2.
On a pre-production IXP2800, this patch should print these messages
on boot:
	Enabling IXP2800 erratum #25 workaround
	Unable to use IXP2000 watchdog due to IXP2800 erratum #25
On any non-buggy IXP2800 (as well as on IXP2400s) you shouldn't see
anything at all, and the watchdog should be usable again.

The ARM generic Kconfig filters out IDE options ... except for
an error prone ARMload of special cases.
This adds one general case to the systems that will offer IDE options:
kernels with PCMCIA support, which probably want to use IDE to access
CompactFlash cards.  This might allow many (most?) of the other cases
to disappear, for systems that only see IDE hardware through CF cards.
Right now this one patch is used to gate access to CF cards, including
MicroDrives, for both omap_cf and at91_cf drivers.

When a module requests a DMA channel via the function s3c2410_dma_request(), this function requests the appropriate irq under the name of the client module. When the client module is unloaded, it calls s3c2410_dma_free() which does not free the irq. Consequently, when e.g. running "cat /proc/interrupts", the irq owner points to freed memory, leading to a kernel oops.

Various places in the ARM kernel implicitly assumed that kernel
stacks are always 8K due to hard coded constants.  Replace these
constants with definitions.

Correct the allowable range of kernel stack pointer values within
the allocation.  Arrange for the entire kernel stack to be zeroed,
not just the upper 4K if CONFIG_DEBUG_STACK_USAGE is set.

Al Viro 5cae841b13 [PATCH] ISA DMA Kconfig fixes - part 1
A bunch of drivers use ISA DMA helpers or their equivalents for
platforms that have ISA with different DMA controller (a lot of ARM
boxen).  Currently there is no way to put such dependency in Kconfig -
CONFIG_ISA is not it (e.g.  it is not set on platforms that have no ISA
slots, but have on-board devices that pretend to be ISA ones).

New symbol added - ISA_DMA_API.  Set when we have functional
enable_dma()/set_dma_mode()/etc.  set of helpers.  Next patches in the
series will add missing dependencies for drivers that need them.

I'm very carefully staying the hell out of the recurring flamefest on
what exactly CONFIG_ISA would mean in ideal world - added symbol has a
well-defined meaning and for now I really want to treat it as completely
independent from the mess around CONFIG_ISA.

Lennert Buytenhek 53e173f62c [PATCH] ARM: 2660/2: fix ixdp2800 boot and pci init

The IXDP2800 is an evalution platform for the IXP2800 processor that
has two IXP2800s connected to the same PCI bus.  This is problematic
as both CPUs will try to configure the PCI bus as they boot linux.
Contrary to on the other IXP2000 platforms, the boot loader on the
IXDP2800 doesn't configure the PCI bus properly, so we do want the
linux instance on one of the CPUs to do that.
Making one of the CPUs ignore the PCI bus (and thus act like a pure
PCI slave device) is not an option because there is a 82559 NIC on
the PCI bus for each of the CPUs.
The chosen solution is to have the master CPU configure the PCI bus
while the slave is kept in a quiescent state, and then to have the
slave CPU scan the PCI bus (without assigning resources) while the
master is kept in a quiescent state.  After this ritual, the master
deletes the slave NIC from its PCI device list, the slave deletes
the master NIC from its device list, and (almost) all is well.
There's still one little problem: each of the CPUs has a 1G SDRAM
BAR, but the IXP2000 only has 512M of outbound PCI memory window.
We solve this by hand-assigning the master and slave SDRAM BARs to
a location outside each of the IXP's outbound PCI windows, and by
having the rest of the BARs autoconfigured in the outbound PCI
windows, in the range [e0000000..ffffffff], so that there is a 1:1
pci:phys mapping between them.
Even with this patch, a number of issues still remain -- just imagine
what happens if one of the CPUs is rebooted, by watchdog or by hand,
but the other one isn't.  But those issues are not easily fixable
given the strange PCI layout of this board and the behavior of the
boot loader shipped with the platform.

Prior to this change, kernel XIP section descriptor access permissions were set to Kernel no access/User no access on ARMv6 machines and the kernel would therefore hang upon entry to userspace when set_fs(USER_DS) was executed.

Nicolas Pitre 2d2669b629 [PATCH] ARM: 2651/3: kernel helpers for NPTL support

This patch entirely reworks the kernel assistance for NPTL on ARM.
In particular this provides an efficient way to retrieve the TLS
value and perform atomic operations without any instruction emulation
nor special system call.  This even allows for pre ARMv6 binaries to
be forward compatible with SMP systems without any penalty.
The problematic and performance critical operations are performed
through segment of kernel provided user code reachable from user space
at a fixed address in kernel memory.  Those fixed entry points are
within the vector page so we basically get it for free as no extra
memory page is required and nothing else may be mapped at that
location anyway.
This is different from (but doesn't preclude) a full blown VDSO
implementation, however a VDSO would prevent some assembly tricks with
constants that allows for efficient branching to those code segments.
And since those code segments only use a few cycles before returning to
user code, the overhead of a VDSO far call would add a significant
overhead to such minimalistic operations.
The ARM_NR_set_tls syscall also changed number.  This is done for two
reasons:
1) this patch changes the way the TLS value was previously meant to be
   retrieved, therefore we ensure whatever library using the old way
   gets fixed (they only exist in private tree at the moment since the
   NPTL work is still progressing).
2) the previous number was allocated in a range causing an undefined
   instruction trap on kernels not supporting that syscall and it was
   determined that allocating it in a range returning -ENOSYS would be
   much nicer for libraries trying to determine if the feature is
   present or not.

In order to work around this problem, this patch merely updates the fix contained in the ARM Ltd. patch to use the macroised abort handler fixups.

PCI subsystem to believe that resource allocation for that BAR failed
due to resource conflicts, which will make attempts to enable the
device fail.  Work around this by assigning I/O addresses starting
from 00010000.
While we're at it, make the PCI I/O resource end at 0001ffff, since we
only have 64k of outbound I/O window on the IXP2000, and we don't do
bank switching.

pci:phys address mapping generally simplifies everything, so try to
allocate PCI addresses from the [e0000000..ffffffff] range, which is
the physical address range of the outbound PCI window on the IXP2000.
This does not affect any of the other IXP2000 platforms since they
all use their bootloader's PCI resource assignment.

The footbridge ISA RTC was being initialised before we had setup the
kernel timer.  This caused a divide by zero error when the current
time of day is set.  Resolve this by initialising the RTC after
the kernel timer has been initialised.

ARM wasn't raising a SIGBUS with a siginfo structure.  Fix
__do_user_fault() to allow us to use it for SIGBUS conditions, and arrange
for the sigbus path to use this.

We need to prevent the siginfo code being called if we do not have a user
space context to call it, so consolidate the "user_mode()" tests.

Thanks to Ian Campbell who spotted this oversight.

Linus Torvalds 1da177e4c3 Linux-2.6.12-rc2
Initial git repository build. I'm not bothering with the full history,
even though we have it. We can create a separate "historical" git
archive of that later if we want to, and in the meantime it's about
3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early
git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good
infrastructure for it.

Let it rip!
