CXL 2.0 allows for dynamic provisioning of new memory regions (system
physical address resources like "System RAM" and "Persistent Memory").
Whereas DDR and PMEM resources are conveyed statically at boot, CXL
allows for assembling and instantiating new regions from the available
capacity of CXL memory expanders in the system.
Sysfs with an "echo $region_name > $create_region_attribute" interface
is chosen as the mechanism to initiate the provisioning process. This
was chosen over ioctl() and netlink() to keep the configuration
interface entirely in a pseudo-fs interface, and it was chosen over
configfs since, aside from this one creation event, the interface is
read-mostly. I.e. configfs supports cases where an object is designed to
be provisioned each boot, like an iSCSI storage target, and CXL region
creation is mostly for PMEM regions which are created usually once
per-lifetime of a server instance. This is an improvement over nvdimm
that pre-created "seed" devices that tended to confuse users looking to
determine which devices are active and which are idle.
Recall that the major change that CXL brings over previous persistent
memory architectures is the ability to dynamically define new regions.
Compare that to drivers like 'nfit' where the region configuration is
statically defined by platform firmware.
Regions are created as a child of a root decoder that encompasses an
address space with constraints. When created through sysfs, the root
decoder is explicit. When created from an LSA's region structure a root
decoder will possibly need to be inferred by the driver.
Upon region creation through sysfs, a vacant region is created with a
unique name. Regions have a number of attributes that must be configured
before the region can be bound to the driver where HDM decoder program
is completed.
An example of creating a new region:
- Allocate a new region name:
region=$(cat /sys/bus/cxl/devices/decoder0.0/create_pmem_region)
- Create a new region by name:
while
region=$(cat /sys/bus/cxl/devices/decoder0.0/create_pmem_region)
! echo $region > /sys/bus/cxl/devices/decoder0.0/create_pmem_region
do true; done
- Region now exists in sysfs:
stat -t /sys/bus/cxl/devices/decoder0.0/$region
- Delete the region, and name:
echo $region > /sys/bus/cxl/devices/decoder0.0/delete_region

The newly added media_entity_remote_source_pad_unique() helper function
handles use cases where the entity has a link enabled uniqueness
constraint covering all pads. There are use cases where the constraint
covers a specific pad only. Add a new media_pad_remote_pad_unique()
function to handle this. It operates as

on the entity.

The media_entity_remote_pad_first() helper function returns the first
remote pad it finds connected to a given pad. Beside being possibly
non-deterministic (as it stops at the first enabled link), the fact that
it returns the first match makes it unsuitable for drivers that need to
guarantee that a single link is enabled, for instance when an entity can
process data from one of multiple sources at a time.
For those use cases, add a new helper function,
media_entity_remote_pad_unique(), that operates on an entity and returns
a remote pad, with a guarantee that only one link is enabled. To ease
its use in drivers, also add an inline wrapper that locates source pads
specifically. A wrapper that locates sink pads can easily be added when
needed.

Drivers typically extend the v4l2_async_subdev structure by embedding it
in a driver-specific structure, to store per-subdev custom data. The
v4l2_async_subdev instances are freed by the v4l2-async framework, which
makes this mechanism cumbersome to use safely when custom data needs
special treatment to be destroyed (such as freeing additional memory, or
releasing references to kernel objects).
To ease this, add a .destroy() operation to the
v4l2_async_notifier_operations structure. The operation is called right
before the v4l2_async_subdev is freed, giving drivers a chance to
destroy data if needed.

Add support for RS-485 multipoint addressing using 9th bit [*]. The
addressing mode is configured through ->rs485_config().
ADDRB in termios indicates 9th bit addressing mode is enabled. In this
mode, 9th bit is used to indicate an address (byte) within the
communication line. ADDRB can only be enabled/disabled through
->rs485_config() that is also responsible for setting the destination and
receiver (filter) addresses.
Add traps to detect unwanted changes to struct serial_rs485 layout using

[*] Technically, RS485 is just an electronic spec and does not itself
specify the 9th bit addressing mode but 9th bit seems at least
"semi-standard" way to do addressing with RS485.

Since commit 31f6bd7fad ("serial: Store character timing information

Uart port's timeout can be derived from frame_time by multiplying with
fifosize.
Most callers of uart_poll_timeout are not made under port's lock. To be
on the safe side, make sure frame_time is only accessed once. As
fifo_size is effectively a constant, it shouldn't cause any issues.

Implement DRM's aperture helpers under video/ for sharing with other
sub-systems. Remove DRM-isms from the interface. The helpers track
the ownership of framebuffer apertures and provide hand-over from
firmware, such as EFI and VESA, to native graphics drivers.
Other subsystems, such as fbdev and vfio, also have to maintain ownership
of framebuffer apertures. Moving DRM's aperture helpers to a more public
location allows all subsystems to interact with each other and share a
common implementation.
The aperture helpers are selected by the various firmware drivers within
DRM and fbdev, and the VGA text-console driver.
The original DRM interface is kept in place for use by DRM drivers.

When SSAM client devices have been (physically) hot-removed,
communication attempts with those devices may fail and time out. This
can even extend to event notifiers, due to which timeouts may occur
during device removal, slowing down that process.
Add a parameter to the notifier unregister function that allows skipping
communication with the EC to prevent this. Furthermore, add wrappers for
registering and unregistering notifiers belonging to SSAM client devices
that automatically check if the device has been marked as hot-removed
and communication should be avoided.
Note that non-SSAM client devices can generally not be hot-removed, so
also add a convenience wrapper for those, defaulting to allow
communication.

Sanitize serial_rs485 struct before calling into rs485_setup. The
drivers provide supported_rs485 to help sanitization of the fields.
If neither of SER_RS485_RTS_ON_SEND or SER_RS485_RTS_AFTER_SEND
supported, don't pretend they can be set to sane settings but clear
them both instead. If only one of them is supported it may look
tempting to use the one driver supports to set the other, however, the
userspace does not have that information readily available so it
wouldn't be helpful.
While adjusting the documentation, remove also the claim that
TIOCGRS485 would call driver specific code. In reality, it does nothing
else than copies the stored serial_rs485 structure from uart_port to
userspace.

Here is the set of driver core changes for 5.19-rc1.
Note, I'm not really happy with this pull request as-is, see below for
details, but overall this is all good for everything but a small set of
systems, which we have a fix for already.
Lots of tiny driver core changes and cleanups happened this cycle,
but the two major things were:
- firmware_loader reorganization and additions including the
ability to have XZ compressed firmware images and the ability
for userspace to initiate the firmware load when it needs to,
instead of being always initiated by the kernel. FPGA devices
specifically want this ability to have their firmware changed
over the lifetime of the system boot, and this allows them to
work without having to come up with yet-another-custom-uapi
interface for loading firmware for them.
- physical location support added to sysfs so that devices that
know this information, can tell userspace where they are
located in a common way. Some ACPI devices already support
this today, and more bus types should support this in the
future.
Smaller changes included:
- driver_override api cleanups and fixes
- error path cleanups and fixes
- get_abi script fixes
- deferred probe timeout changes.
It's that last change that I'm the most worried about. It has been
reported to cause boot problems for a number of systems, and I have a
tested patch series that resolves this issue. But I didn't get it
merged into my tree before 5.18-final came out, so it has not gotten any
linux-next testing.
I'll send the fixup patches (there are 2) as a follow-on series to this
pull request if you want to take them directly, _OR_ I can just revert
the probe timeout changes and they can wait for the next -rc1 merge
cycle. Given that the fixes are tested, and pretty simple, I'm leaning
toward that choice. Sorry this all came at the end of the merge window,
I should have resolved this all 2 weeks ago, that's my fault as it was
in the middle of some travel for me.
All have been tested in linux-next for weeks, with no reported issues
other than the above-mentioned boot time outs.

to initiate the firmware load when it needs to, instead of being
always initiated by the kernel. FPGA devices specifically want this
ability to have their firmware changed over the lifetime of the
system boot, and this allows them to work without having to come up
with yet-another-custom-uapi interface for loading firmware for
them.
- physical location support added to sysfs so that devices that know
this information, can tell userspace where they are located in a
common way. Some ACPI devices already support this today, and more
bus types should support this in the future.
Smaller changes include:
- driver_override api cleanups and fixes
- error path cleanups and fixes
- get_abi script fixes
- deferred probe timeout changes.
It's that last change that I'm the most worried about. It has been
reported to cause boot problems for a number of systems, and I have a
tested patch series that resolves this issue. But I didn't get it
merged into my tree before 5.18-final came out, so it has not gotten
any linux-next testing.
I'll send the fixup patches (there are 2) as a follow-on series to this
pull request.
All have been tested in linux-next for weeks, with no reported issues
other than the above-mentioned boot time-outs"

Here is the big set of tty and serial driver updates for 5.19-rc1.
Lots of tiny cleanups in here, the major stuff is:
- termbit cleanups and unification by Ilpo. A much needed
change that goes a long way to making things simpler for all
of the different arches
- tty documentation cleanups and movements to their own place in
the documentation tree
- old tty driver cleanups and fixes from Jiri to bring some
existing drivers into the modern world
- RS485 cleanups and unifications to make it easier for
individual drivers to support this mode instead of having to
duplicate logic in each driver
- Lots of 8250 driver updates and additions
- new device id additions
- n_gsm continued fixes and cleanups
- other minor serial driver updates and cleanups
All of these have been in linux-next for weeks with no reported issues.

Quite a large number of conversions this time around, courtesy of Uwe
who has been working tirelessly on these. No drivers of the legacy API
are left at this point, so as a next step the old API can be removed.

Pull documentation updates from Jonathan Corbet:
"It was a moderately busy cycle for documentation; highlights include:
- After a long period of inactivity, the Japanese translations are
seeing some much-needed maintenance and updating.
- Reworked IOMMU documentation
- Some new documentation for static-analysis tools
- A new overall structure for the memory-management documentation.
This is an LSFMM outcome that, it is hoped, will help encourage
developers to fill in the many gaps. Optimism is eternal...but
hopefully it will work.
- More Chinese translations.
Plus the usual typo fixes, updates, etc"

Some (most?) drivers emit the inactive state when the PWM is disabled.
However there are exceptions, so document that a consumer better doesn't
depend on this behaviour.
Some known exceptions:
- imx27 emits 0 independent of the configured polarity
- mxs just drives the output to the last emitted state.
- iqs620a makes the output tristated on disable, so an external
pull-down would be required.

Extend the firmware subsystem to support a persistent sysfs interface that
userspace may use to initiate a firmware update. For example, FPGA based
PCIe cards load firmware and FPGA images from local FLASH when the card
boots. The images in FLASH may be updated with new images provided by the
user at his/her convenience.
A device driver may call firmware_upload_register() to expose persistent
"loading" and "data" sysfs files. These files are used in the same way as
the fallback sysfs "loading" and "data" files. When 0 is written to
"loading" to complete the write of firmware data, the data is transferred
to the lower-level driver using pre-registered call-back functions. The
data transfer is done in the context of a kernel worker thread.

The current documentation for the residue reported in a cyclic transfer
case mentions that the reported residue should be relative to the current
period only. However the definition of DMA_RESIDUE_GRANULARITY_SEGMENT
specifies that the residue should be updated after each period for
a cyclic transfer, which is in direct contradiction.
Moreover the pcm_dmaengine common code uses the residue relative to
the whole cyclic buffer size, not one period.
Correct the residue-related documentation to reflect this.

Improve ATA queued command allocation as follows:
- For attaining a qc tag for a SAS host we need to allocate a bit in
ata_port.sas_tag_allocated bitmap.
However we already have a unique tag per device in range
[0, ATA_MAX_QUEUE -1] in the scsi cmnd budget token, so just use that
instead.
- It is a bit pointless to have ata_qc_new_init() in libata-core.c since it
pokes scsi internals, so inline it in ata_scsi_qc_new() (in
libata-scsi.c). Also update Doc accordingly.
- Use standard SCSI helpers set_host_byte() and set_status_byte() in
ata_scsi_qc_new().
Christoph Hellwig originally contributed the change to inline
ata_qc_new_init().

Add a general purpose helper to deep dive into dma_fence_chain/dma_fence_array

"This development cycle extends the subsystem to discover CXL resources
throughout a CXL/PCIe switch topology and respond to hot add/remove
events anywhere in that topology.
This is more foundational infrastructure in preparation for dynamic
memory region provisioning support. Recall that CXL memory regions, as
the new "Theory of Operation" section of
Documentation/driver-api/cxl/memory-devices.rst describes, bring
storage volume striping semantics to memory.
The hot add/remove behavior is validated with extensions to the
cxl_test unit test environment and this test in the cxl-cli test
suite:

The overwhelming bulk of this pull request is a change from Uwe
Kleine-König which changes the return type of the remove() function to
void as part of some wider work he's doing to do this for all bus types,
causing updates to most SPI device drivers. The branch with that on has
been cross merged with a couple of other trees which added new SPI
drivers this cycle, I'm not expecting any build issues resulting from
the change.
Otherwise it's been a relatively quiet release with some new device
support, a few minor features and the welcome completion of the
conversion of the subsystem to use GPIO descriptors rather than numbers:
- Change return type of remove() to void.
- Completion of the conversion of SPI controller drivers to use GPIO
descriptors rather than numbers.
- Quite a few DT schema conversions.
- Support for multiple SPI devices on a bus in ACPI systems.
- Big overhaul of the PXA2xx SPI driver.
- Support for AMD AMDI0062, Intel Raptor Lake, Mediatek MT7986 and
MT8186, nVidia Tegra210 and Tegra234, Renesas RZ/V2L, Tesla FSD and
Sunplus SP7021.

Block Aperture Window support was an attempt to layer an error model
over PMEM for platforms that did not support machine-check-recovery.
However, it was abandoned before it ever shipped, and only ever existed
in the ACPI specification. Meanwhile Linux has carried a large pile of
dead code for non-shipping infrastructure. For years it has been off to
the side out of the way, but now CXL and recent directions with DAX
support have the potential to collide with this code.
In preparation for adding discontiguous namespace support, a
pre-requisite for the nvdimm subsystem to replace device-mapper for
striping + concatenation use cases, delete BLK aperture support.
On the obscure chance that some hardware vendor shipped support for this
mode, note that the driver will still keep BLK space reserved in the
label area. So an end user in this case would still have the opportunity
to report the regression to get BLK-mode support restored without
risking the data they have on that device.

At this point the subsystem can enumerate all CXL ports (CXL.mem decode
resources in upstream switch ports and host bridges) in a system. The
last mile is connecting those ports to endpoints.
The cxl_mem driver connects an endpoint device to the platform CXL.mem
protoctol decode-topology. At ->probe() time it walks its
device-topology-ancestry and adds a CXL Port object at every Upstream
Port hop until it gets to CXL root. The CXL root object is only present
after a platform firmware driver registers platform CXL resources. For
ACPI based platform this is managed by the ACPI0017 device and the
cxl_acpi driver.
The ports are registered such that disabling a given port automatically
unregisters all descendant ports, and the chain can only be registered
after the root is established.
Given ACPI device scanning may run asynchronously compared to PCI device
scanning the root driver is tasked with rescanning the bus after the
root successfully probes.
Conversely if any ports in a chain between the root and an endpoint
becomes disconnected it subsequently triggers the endpoint to
unregister. Given lock depenedencies the endpoint unregistration happens
in a workqueue asynchronously. If userspace cares about synchronizing
delayed work after port events the /sys/bus/cxl/flush attribute is
available for that purpose.

The need for a CXL port driver and a dedicated cxl_bus_type is driven by
a need to simultaneously support 2 independent physical memory decode
domains (cache coherent CXL.mem and uncached PCI.mmio) that also
intersect at a single PCIe device node. A CXL Port is a device that
advertises a CXL Component Register block with an "HDM Decoder
Capability Structure".
>From Documentation/driver-api/cxl/memory-devices.rst:
Similar to how a RAID driver takes disk objects and assembles them into
a new logical device, the CXL subsystem is tasked to take PCIe and ACPI
objects and assemble them into a CXL.mem decode topology. The need for
runtime configuration of the CXL.mem topology is also similar to RAID in
that different environments with the same hardware configuration may
decide to assemble the topology in contrasting ways. One may choose
performance (RAID0) striping memory across multiple Host Bridges and
endpoints while another may opt for fault tolerance and disable any
striping in the CXL.mem topology.
The port driver identifies whether an endpoint Memory Expander is
connected to a CXL topology. If an active (bound to the 'cxl_port'
driver) CXL Port is not found at every PCIe Switch Upstream port and an
active "root" CXL Port then the device is just a plain PCIe endpoint
only capable of participating in PCI.mmio and DMA cycles, not CXL.mem
coherent interleave sets.
The 'cxl_port' driver lets the CXL subsystem leverage driver-core
infrastructure for setup and teardown of register resources and
communicating device activation status to userspace. The cxl_bus_type
can rendezvous the async arrival of platform level CXL resources (via
the 'cxl_acpi' driver) with the asynchronous enumeration of Memory
Expander endpoints, while also implementing a hierarchical locking model
independent of the associated 'struct pci_dev' locking model. The
locking for dport and decoder enumeration is now handled in the core
rather than callers.
For now the port driver only enumerates and registers CXL resources
(downstream port metadata and decoder resources) later it will be used
to take action on its decoders in response to CXL.mem region
provisioning requests.
Note1: cxlpci.h has long depended on pci.h, but port.c was the first to
not include pci.h. Carry that dependency in cxlpci.h.
Note2: cxl port enumeration and probing complicates CXL subsystem init
to the point that it helps to have centralized debug logging of probe
events in cxl_bus_probe().

Rename struct dma_buf_map to struct iosys_map and corresponding APIs.
Over time dma-buf-map grew up to more functionality than the one used by
dma-buf: in fact it's just a shim layer to abstract system memory, that
can be accessed via regular load and store, from IO memory that needs to
be acessed via arch helpers.
The idea is to extend this API so it can fulfill other needs, internal
to a single driver. Example: in the i915 driver it's desired to share
the implementation for integrated graphics, which uses mostly system
memory, with discrete graphics, which may need to access IO memory.
The conversion was mostly done with the following semantic patch:

the "Bus-Independent Device Accesses" section.
