Currently, it's up to the IPMI SMIs to provide the product & version
details of BMCs behind registered IPMI SMI interfaces. This device ID is
provided on SMI regsitration, and kept around for all future queries.
However, this version information isn't always static. For example, a
BMC may be upgraded at runtime, making the old version information
stale.
This change allows querying the BMC device ID & version information
dynamically. If no static device_id argument is provided to
ipmi_register_smi, then the IPMI core code will perform a Get Device ID
IPMI command to query the version information when needed. We keep a
short-term cache of this information so we don't need to re-query
for every attribute access.

There are a lot of bad things that a set of BMCs could do that
would really confuse the IPMI driver; it's possible for BMCs with
different GUIDs to have the same product/devid (though that's
not technically legal), which would result in platform device
namespace collisions. Fixing it would involve either using
the GUID in the BMC name, which resulted in huge names, or
just using an ida for numbering the BMCs. The latter approach
was chosen to avoid the huge names.

Currently, ipmi_demagle_device_id requires a full response buffer in its
data argument. This means we can't use it to parse a response in a
struct ipmi_recv_msg, which has the netfn and cmd as separate bytes.
This change alters the definition and users of ipmi_demangle_device_id
to use a split netfn, cmd and data buffer, so it can be used with
non-sequential responses.

There was a certain error case where the BMC wouldn't be deregistered
like it should be. Rework the BMC registration to make calling
ipmi_bmc_unregister() ok even if it's not registered and to clean up
the error handling for ipmi_bmc_register().

BMC device refcounts were not being decremented after fetching from
driver_find_device(). Also, document the use of ipmidriver_mutex
and tighten it's span some by incrementing the BMC's usecount in
the BMC find routines and not later. This will be important for
future changes where a long mutex hold area will complicate things.

When I set the timeout to a specific value such as 500ms, the timeout
event will not happen in time due to the overflow in function
check_msg_timeout:

The type of timeout_period is long, but ent->timeout is unsigned long.
This patch makes the type consistent.

Rename:
wait_queue_t => wait_queue_entry_t
'wait_queue_t' was always a slight misnomer: its name implies that it's a "queue",
but in reality it's a queue *entry*. The 'real' queue is the wait queue head,
which had to carry the name.
Start sorting this out by renaming it to 'wait_queue_entry_t'.
This also allows the real structure name 'struct __wait_queue' to
lose its double underscore and become 'struct wait_queue_entry',
which is the more canonical nomenclature for such data types.

Create a platform device for each IPMI device in the DMI table,
a separate kind of device for SSIF types and for KCS, BT, and
SMIC types. This is so auto-loading IPMI devices will work
from just SMBIOS tables.
This also adds the ability to extract the slave address from
the SMBIOS tables, so that when the driver uses ACPI-specified
interfaces, it can still extract the slave address from SMBIOS.

A vendor with a system having more than 128 CPUs occasionally encounters

Note that the hwtype is compile checked, but not currently stored (the
lockdown code probably won't require it). It is, however, there for
future use.
A bonus is that the hwtype can also be used for grepping.
The intention is for the kernel to ignore or reject attempts to set
annotated module parameters if lockdown is enabled. This applies to
options passed on the boot command line, passed to insmod/modprobe or
direct twiddling in /sys/module/ parameter files.
The module initialisation then needs to handle the parameter not being
set, by (1) giving an error, (2) probing for a value or (3) using a
reasonable default.
What I can't do is just reject a module out of hand because it may
take a hardware setting in the module parameters. Some important
modules, some ipmi stuff for instance, both probe for hardware and
allow hardware to be manually specified; if the driver is aborts with
any error, you don't get any ipmi hardware.
Further, trying to do this entirely in the module initialisation code
doesn't protect against sysfs twiddling.

systemd by default starts watchdog on reboot and sets the timer to
ShutdownWatchdogSec=10min. Reboot handler in ipmi_watchdog than reduces
the timer to 120s which is not enough time to boot a Xen machine with
a lot of RAM. As a result the machine is rebooted the second time
during the long run of (XEN) Scrubbing Free RAM.....
Fix this by setting the timer to 120s only if it was previously
set to a low value.

Commit c49c097610 ("ipmi: Don't call receive handler in the
panic context") means that the panic_recv_free is not called during a
panic and the atomic count does not drop to 0.
Fix this by only expecting one decrement of the atomic variable
which comes from panic_smi_free.

When the kernel is running in secure boot mode, we lock down the kernel to
prevent userspace from modifying the running kernel image. Whilst this
includes prohibiting access to things like /dev/mem, it must also prevent
access by means of configuring driver modules in such a way as to cause a
device to access or modify the kernel image.
To this end, annotate module_param* statements that refer to hardware
configuration and indicate for future reference what type of parameter they
specify. The parameter parser in the core sees this information and can
skip such parameters with an error message if the kernel is locked down.
The module initialisation then runs as normal, but just sees whatever the
default values for those parameters is.
Note that we do still need to do the module initialisation because some
drivers have viable defaults set in case parameters aren't specified and
some drivers support automatic configuration (e.g. PNP or PCI) in addition
to manually coded parameters.
This patch annotates drivers in drivers/char/ipmi/.

Commit 1abf71e moved the creation of new_smi->dev to earlier in the init
sequence in order to provide infrastructure for log printing.
However, the init_name was created with a hard-coded value of zero. This
presents a problem in systems with more than one interface, producing a
call trace in dmesg.
To correct the problem, simply use smi_num instead of the hard-coded
value of zero.

There was actually a more general problem, the platform device wasn't
being set correctly, either, and there was a possible (though extremely
unlikely) race on smi_num. Add locks to clean up the race and use the
proper value for the platform device, too.

msg_written_handler() may set ssif_info->multi_data to NULL
when using ipmitool to write fru.
Before setting ssif_info->multi_data to NULL, add new local
pointer "data_to_send" and store correct i2c data pointer to
it to fix NULL pointer kernel panic and incorrect ssif_info->multi_pos.

The registers for the bt-bmc device live under the Aspeed LPC
controller. Devicetree bindings have recently been introduced for the
LPC controller where the "host" portion of the LPC register space is
described as a syscon device. Future devicetrees describing the bt-bmc
device should nest its node under the appropriate "simple-mfd", "syscon"
compatible node.
This change allows the bt-bmc driver to function with both syscon and
non-syscon- based devicetree descriptions by always using a regmap for
register access, either retrieved from the parent syscon device or
instantiated if none exists.

When a computer has an IPMI system interface, the device interface
is most probably also desired. Autoloading of ipmi_devintf currently
works only if ipmi_si has allocated a platform device. That doesn't
happen if the SI interface was detected e.g. via ACPI. But ACPI
detection is preferred these days, see e.g. kernel.org bug 46741.
This patch introduces a softdep in place of the existing modalias
for ipmi_devintf.

The IPMI message handler uses a message id that the lower-layer
preserved to track the sequence number of the message. The macros
that handled these sequence numbers were somewhat broken as they
could result in sequence number truncation and they were not
doing an "and" of the proper number of bits.
I think this actually is not a problem, because the truncation
should be harmless and the improper "and" didn't hurt anything
because sequence number generation used the same improper "and"
and wouldn't generate a sequence number that would get
truncated wrong. However, it should be fixed.

When added by ACPI, the information does not contain the slave address
of the BMC. However, that information is available from SMBIOS. So
if we add a device that doesn't have a slave address, look at the other
devices that are duplicate interfaces and see if they have a slave
address.

Some logs are printed out early using smi->dev, but on a platform device
that is not created until later. So move the creation of that device
structure earlier in the sequence so it can be used for printing.

The Aspeed SoCs have two BT interfaces : one is IPMI compliant and the
other is H8S/2168 compliant.
The current ipmi/bt-bmc driver implements the IPMI version and we
should reflect its nature in the compatible node name using
'aspeed,ast2400-ibt-bmc' instead of 'aspeed,ast2400-bt-bmc'. The
latter should be used for a H8S interface driver if it is implemented
one day.

This patch adds a simple device driver to expose the iBT interface on
Aspeed SOCs (AST2400 and AST2500) as a character device. Such SOCs are
commonly used as BMCs (BaseBoard Management Controllers) and this
driver implements the BMC side of the BT interface.
The BT (Block Transfer) interface is used to perform in-band IPMI
communication between a host and its BMC. Entire messages are buffered
before sending a notification to the other end, host or BMC, that
there is data to be read. Usually, the host emits requests and the BMC
responses but the specification provides a mean for the BMC to send
SMS Attention (BMC-to-Host attention or System Management Software
attention) messages.
For this purpose, the driver introduces a specific ioctl on the
device: 'BT_BMC_IOCTL_SMS_ATN' that can be used by the system running
on the BMC to signal the host of such an event.
The device name defaults to '/dev/ipmi-bt-host'

Parameter trydefaults=1 causes the ipmi_init to initialize ipmi through
the legacy port io space that was designated for ipmi. Architectures
that do not map legacy port io can panic when trydefaults=1.
Rather than implement build-time conditional exceptions for each
architecture that does not map legacy port io, we have removed legacy
port io from the driver.
Parameter 'trydefaults' has been removed. Attempts to use it hereafter
will evoke the "Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter" message.
The patch was built against a number of architectures and tested for
regressions and functionality on x86_64 and ARM64.

.alert() is meant to be generic, but there is currently no way
for the device driver to know which protocol generated the alert.
Add a parameter in .alert() to help the device driver to understand
what is given in data.
This patch is required to have the support of SMBus Host Notify protocol
through .alert().

Commit 7ea0ed2b5b ("ipmi: Make the message handler easier to use for
SMI interfaces") changed handle_new_recv_msgs() to call handle_one_recv_msg()
for a smi_msg while the smi_msg is still connected to waiting_rcv_msgs list.
That could lead to following list corruption problems:
1) low-level function treats smi_msg as not connected to list
handle_one_recv_msg() could end up calling smi_send(), which
assumes the msg is not connected to list.
For example, the following sequence could corrupt list by
doing list_add_tail() for the entry still connected to other list.

Unlike everywhere else in the IPMI specification, the I2C address
specified in the SPMI table is not shifted to the left one bit with
the LSB zero. Instead it is not shifted with the MSB zero.

Commit d61a3ead26 ("[PATCH] IPMI: reserve I/O ports separately")
changed the way I/O ports were reserved and includes this comment in

Some BIOSes reserve disjoint I/O regions in their ACPI tables for the IPMI
controller. This causes problems when trying to register the entire I/O
region. Therefore we must register each I/O port separately.

Commit 1717f2096b ("panic, x86: Fix re-entrance problem due to panic
on NMI") introduced nmi_panic() which prevents concurrent and recursive
execution of panic(). It also saves registers for the crash dump on x86
by later commit 58c5661f21 ("panic, x86: Allow CPUs to save registers
even if looping in NMI context").
ipmi_watchdog driver can call panic() from NMI handler, so replace it
with nmi_panic().

Under some circumstances, the IPMI state machine could return
a call without delay option but the driver would still do a long
delay because the result wasn't checked. Instead of calling
the state machine after transaction done, just go back to the
top of the processing to start over.

Enclosing '#include <linux/acpi.h>' within '#ifdef CONFIG_ACPI' is
unnecessary, since it has its own conditional compile for CONFIG_ACPI.
Commit 0fbcf4af7c ("ipmi: Convert the IPMI SI ACPI handling to a
platform device") exposed this as a problem for platforms that do not
support ACPI when it introduced a call to ACPI_PTR() macro outside of
the CONFIG_ACPI conditional compile. This would have been perfectly
acceptable if acpi.h were not conditionally excluded for the non-acpi
platform, because the conditional compile within acpi.h defines
ACPI_PTR() to return NULL when compiled for non acpi platforms.

We call cleanup_one_si from ipmi_pci_remove, which calls ->addr_source_cleanup,
which gets set to point to ipmi_pci_cleanup, which does a pci_disable_device.

In order to allow panic actions to be processed, the ipmi watchdog
driver sets a new timeout value on panic. The 255s timeout
was designed to allow kdump and others actions on panic, as in
http://lkml.iu.edu/hypermail/linux/kernel/0711.3/0258.html
This is counter-intuitive for a end-user who sets watchdog timeout
value to something like 30s and who expects BMC to reset the system
within 30s of a panic.
This commit allows user to configure the timeout on panic.

The IPMI driver would let the final timeout just happen, but it could
easily just stop the timer. If the timer stop fails that's ok, that
should be rare.

The timer and thread were not being started for internal messages,
so in interrupt mode if something hung the timer would never go
off and clean things up. Factor out the internal message sending
and start the timer for those messages, too.

This patch replaces timeval with timespec64 as 32 bit 'struct timeval'
will not give current time beyond 2038.
The patch changes the code to use ktime_get_real_ts64() which returns
a 'struct timespec64' instead of do_gettimeofday() which returns a
'struct timeval'
This patch also alters the format string in pr_info() for now.tv_sec
to incorporate 'long long' on 32 bit architectures.

It appears that some BMCs support interrupts but don't support setting
the irq enable bits. The interrupts are just always on. Sigh.
Add code to compensate.
The new code was very similar to another functions, so this also
factors out the common code into other functions.

Received handlers defined as ipmi_recv_hndl member of struct
ipmi_user_hndl can take a spinlock. This means that if the kernel
panics while holding the lock, a deadlock may happen on the lock
while flushing queued messages in the panic context.
Calling the receive handler doesn't make much meanings in the panic
context, simply skip it to avoid possible deadlocks.

When processing queued messages in the panic context, IPMI driver
tries to do it without any locking to avoid deadlocks. However,
this means we can touch a corrupted list if the kernel panicked
while manipulating the list. Fortunately, current `add-tail and
del-from-head' style implementation won't touch the corrupted part,
but it is inherently risky.
To get rid of the risk, this patch re-initializes the message lists
on panic if the related spinlock has already been acquired. As the
result, we may lose queued messages, but it's not so painful.
Dropping messages on the received message list is also less
problematic because no one can respond the received messages.

When flushing queued messages in run-to-completion mode,
smi_event_handler() is recursively called.

smi_event_handler()
...
The depth of the recursive call depends on the number of queued
messages, so it can cause a stack overflow if many messages have
been queued.
To solve this problem, this patch removes flush_messages()
from sender()@ipmi_si_intf.c. Instead, add flush_messages() to
caller side of sender() if needed. Additionally, to implement this,
add new handler flush_messages to struct ipmi_smi_handlers.

If the OPAL call to receive the ipmi message fails, then we free up the
smi message and return. But, the driver still holds the reference to
old smi message in the 'cur_msg' which can potentially be accessed later
and freed again leading to kernel oops. To fix it up,
The kernel driver should reset the 'cur_msg' and send reply to the user
in addition to freeing the message.

The IPMI SI driver was using direct PNP, but that was not really
ideal because the IPMI device is a platform device. There was
some special handling in the acpi_pnp.c code for making this work,
but that was breaking ACPI handling for the IPMI SSIF driver.
So without this patch there were significant issues getting the
SSIF driver to work with ACPI.
So use a platform device for ACPI detection and remove the
entry from acpi_pnp.c.

speed module address lookup. He found some abusers of the module lock
doing that too.
A little bit of parameter work here too; including Dan Streetman's breaking
up the big param mutex so writing a parameter can load another module (yeah,
really). Unfortunately that broke the usual suspects, !CONFIG_MODULES and
!CONFIG_SYSFS, so those fixes were appended too.

Most code already uses consts for the struct kernel_param_ops,
sweep the kernel for the last offending stragglers. Other than
include/linux/moduleparam.h and kernel/params.c all other changes
were generated with the following Coccinelle SmPL patch. Merge
conflicts between trees can be handled with Coccinelle.
In the future git could get Coccinelle merge support to deal with
patch --> fail --> grammar --> Coccinelle --> new patch conflicts
automatically for us on patches where the grammar is available and
the patch is of high confidence. Consider this a feature request.

Lots of little fixes for multi-part messages:
The values was not being re-initialized, if something went wrong
handling a multi-part message and it got left in a bad state, it
might be an issue.
The commands were not correct when issuing multi-part reads, the
code was not passing in the proper value for commands. Also clean
up some minor formatting issues.
Get the block number from the right location, limit the maximum send
message size to 63 bytes and explain why, and fix some minor sylistic
issues.

The SSIF interface can optionally have an SMBus alert come in when
data is ready. Unfortunately, the IPMI spec gives wiggle room to
the implementer to allow them to always have the alert enabled,
even if the driver doesn't enable it. So implement alerts.
If you don't in this situation, the SMBus alert handling will
constantly complain.

start_next_msg() issues a message placed in smi_info->waiting_msg
if it is non-NULL. However, sender() sets a message to
smi_info->curr_msg and NULL to smi_info->waiting_msg in the context
of run_to_completion mode. As the result, it leads an infinite
loop by waiting the completion of unissued message when leaving
dying message after kernel panic.
sender() should set the message to smi_info->waiting_msg not
curr_msg.

commit d6c5dc18d8 ("ipmi: Remove uses of return value of seq_printf")
incorrectly changed the return value of various proc_show functions
to use seq_has_overflowed().
These functions should return 0 on completion rather than 1/true
on overflow. 1 is the same as #define SEQ_SKIP which would cause
the output to not be emitted (skipped) instead.
This is a logical defect only as the length of these outputs are
all smaller than the initial allocation done by the seq filesystem.

The code was using an normal completion, but that caused stuck
task errors after a while. Use an interruptible one to avoid that.

If ipmi_powernv_recv(...) is called without a current message it
prints a warning and returns. However it fails to release the message
lock causing the system to dead lock during any subsequent IPMI
operations.
This error path should never normally be taken unless there are bugs
elsewhere in the system.

Some BMCs don't let you clear the receive irq bit in the global
enables. This is kind of silly, but they give an error if you
try to clear it. Compensate for this by detecting the situation
and working around it.

From a locking point of view it is safe to check waiting_msg without
a lock, but there is a memory ordering issue that causes it to
possibly not be set right when viewed from another processor. We are
already claiming a lock right after that, move the check to inside
the lock to enforce the memory ordering.

Instead of manual calls of device_create_file() and
device_remove_file(), implement the condition in is_visible callback
for the attribute group and put these entries to the group, too.
This simplifies the code and avoids the possible races.

This adds a loop through the elements in the linked list, recv_msgs using
list_for_entry_safe in order to free messages in this list. In addition
we are using the safe version of this marco in order to prevent use after
bugs related to deleting the element we are on currently by holding a
pointer to the next element after the current one we are on and freeing
with the function, ipmi_free_recv_msg internally in this loop.

The driver uses #ifdef DEBUG_TIMING in order to conditionally print out
timestamped debug messages. Unfortunately it adds the ifdefs all over the
usage sites.
This patch cleans it up by adding a debug_timestamp() function which
is compiled out if DEBUG_TIMING isn't present. This cleans up all
the ugly ifdefs in the function logic.

The previous cleanup of BMC attributes left a few holes, and if
you run with lockdep debugging with a BMC with the proper attributes,
you could get a warning.
This patch removes all the unused attributes from the BMC structure,
since they are all declared in the .data section now. It makes
the attributes all static. It fixes the referencing of the
attributes in a couple of cases that dynamically added the files
depending on BMC information.

On a reset, the BMC may reset the BT enable in the processor
registers (different than the global enables in the BMC). Check

If an attention came in while handling a message response, it
could cause the state machine to go into the wrong mode and lock
things up if the state machine wasn't in normal mode. So if the
state machine is not in normal mode, save the attention flag for
later.

The BMC can be reset while we are running; that means the interrupt
and event message buffer settings may be wrong. So periodically
check to see if these values are correct, and fix them if they
are wrong.

This change adds an initial IPMI driver for powerpc OPAL firmware. The
interface is exposed entirely through firmware: we have two functions to
send and receive IPMI messages, and an interrupt notification from the
firmware to signify that a message is available.

A message queue was added to the message handler, so the SMI
interfaces only need to handle one message at a time. Pull out
the message queue. This also leads to some significant
simplification in the shutdown of an interface, since the
message handler now does a lot of the cleanup.

The message handler expected the SMI interface to keep a queue of
messages, but that was kind of silly, the queue would be easier to
manage in the message handler itself. As part of that, fix the
message cleanup to make sure no messages are outstanding when an
SMI interface is unregistered. This makes it easier for an SMI
interface to unregister, it just has to call ipmi_unregister_smi()
first and all processing from the message handler will be cleaned
up.

The handling of BMC flags wasn't quite right in a few places, mainly
around enabling and disabling interrupts in the BMC. Clean up the
code and fix the handling of the flags.

This patch fixes a bug on hotmod removing.
After ipmi interface is removed using hotmod, kernel panic occurs when
rmmod impi_si. For example, try this:

list_del in cleanup_one_si() fails because the smi_info is already
removed when hotmod removing.
When ipmi interface is removed by hotmod, smi_info is removed by
cleanup_one_si(), but is is still set in drvdata. Therefore when rmmod
ipmi_si, ipmi_pnp_remove tries to remove it again and fails.
By this patch, a pointer to smi_info in drvdata is cleared when hotmod
removing so that it will be not accessed when rmmod.

The warning is bogus and this case can not occur. Apparently this is a
false positive resulting from gcc getting a little smarter about
tracking assignments but not smart enough.
Marking the ipmi_thread_busy_wait function as inline gives the gcc
optimization logic enough information to figure out for itself that the
case cannot happen, which gets rid of the warning without adding any
fake initialization.

The IPMI driver would wake up periodically looking for events and
watchdog pretimeouts. If there is nothing waiting for these events,
it's really kind of pointless to be checking for them. So modify the
driver so the message handler can pass down if it needs the lower layer
to be waiting for these. Modify the system interface lower layer to
turn off all timer and thread activity if the upper layer doesn't need
anything and it is not currently handling messages. And modify the
message handler to not restart the timer if its timer is not needed.
The timers and kthread will still be enabled if:
- the SI interface is handling a message.
- a user has enabled watching for events.
- the IPMI watchdog timer is in use (since it uses pretimeouts).
- the message handler is waiting on a remote response.
- a user has registered to receive commands.
This mostly affects interfaces without interrupts. Interfaces with
interrupts already don't use CPU in the system interface when the
interface is idle.

With recent changes it is possible for the timer handler to detect an
idle interface and not start the timer, but the thread to start an
operation at the same time. The thread will not start the timer in that
instance, resulting in the timer not running.
Instead, move all timer operations under the lock and start the timer in
the thread if it detect non-idle and the timer is not already running.
Moving under locks allows the last timeout to be set in both the thread
and the timer. 'Timer is not running' means that the timer is not
pending and smi_timeout() is not running. So we need a flag to detect
this correctly.
Also fix a few other timeout bugs: setting the last timeout when the
interrupt has to be disabled and the timer started, and setting the last
timeout in check_start_timer_thread possibly racing with the timer

'for' loop. Make 'i' an 'int' instead of 'char' to get rid of the

Loading ipmi_si module while bmc is disconnected, we found the timeout
is longer than 5 secs. Actually it takes about 3 mins and 20

The last line of PARISC machines (C8000, RP34x0, etc.) have a BMC for
controlling temperature, fan speed and other stuff. The BMC is
connected via a special bus and listed in the firmware device tree.
This change adds support for these BMCs to the IPMI driver.

The latest versions of the kernel drivers for ipmi can use ACPI to
determine the type of BMC device used in the system. The following
patch adds a module alias so that udev will autoload the ipmi_si driver.

When a 32 bit version of ipmitool is used on a 64 bit kernel, the
ipmi_devintf code fails to correctly acquire ipmi_mutex. This results in
incomplete data being retrieved in some cases, or other possible failures.
Add a wrapper around compat_ipmi_ioctl() to take ipmi_mutex to fix this.

The only part of proc_dir_entry the code outside of fs/proc
really cares about is PDE(inode)->data. Provide a helper
for that; static inline for now, eventually will be moved
to fs/proc, along with the knowledge of struct proc_dir_entry
layout.

The configuration change building ipmi_si into the kernel precludes the
use of a custom driver that can utilize more than one KCS interface,
multiple IPMBs, and more than one BMC. This capability is important for
fault-tolerant systems.
Even if the kernel option ipmi_si.trydefaults=0 is specified, ipmi_si
discovers and claims one of the KCS interfaces on a Stratus server. The
inability to now prevent the kernel from managing this device is a
regression from previous kernels. The regression breaks a capability
fault-tolerant vendors have relied upon.
To support both ACPI opregion access and the need to avoid activation of
ipmi_si on some platforms, we've added two new kernel options,
ipmi_si.tryacpi and ipmi_si.trydmi be added to prevent ipmi_si from
initializing when these options are set to 0 on the kernel command line.
With these options at the default value of 1, ipmi_si init proceeds
according to the kernel default.

CONFIG_HOTPLUG is going away as an option. As a result, the __dev*
markings need to be removed.
This change removes the use of __devinit, __devexit_p, __devinitdata,
__devinitconst, and __devexit from these drivers.
Based on patches originally written by Bill Pemberton, but redone by me
in order to handle some of the coding style issues better, by hand.

for pre timeout handling, marked to be removed as soon as
a generic replacement would become available.
The latter has actually occurred in 2006, at e05b59fe.

The IPMI watchdog timer clears or extends the timer on reboot/shutdown.
It was using the non-locking routine for setting the watchdog timer, but
this was causing race conditions. Instead, use the locking version to
avoid the races. It seems to work fine.

The part of the IPMI driver that delivered panic information to the event
log and extended the watchdog timeout during a panic was not properly
handling the messages. It used static messages to avoid allocation, but
wasn't properly waiting for these, or wasn't properly handling the
refcounts.

The IPMI driver would release a lock, deliver a message, then relock.
This is obviously ugly, and this patch converts the message handler

We currently time out and retry KCS transactions after 1 second of waiting
for IBF or OBF. This appears to be too short for some hardware. The IPMI
spec says "All system software wait loops should include error timeouts.
For simplicity, such timeouts are not shown explicitly in the flow
diagrams. A five-second timeout or greater is recommended". Change the
timeout to five seconds to satisfy the slow hardware.

I've built all the working defconfigs from all the arches that I can
and made sure that they don't break.
The reason for these patches is that I recently encountered a circular
dependency problem that came about when I produced some patches to
optimise get_order() by rewriting it to use ilog2().
This uses bitops - and on the SH arch asm/bitops.h drags in
asm-generic/get_order.h by a circuituous route involving asm/system.h.
The main difficulty seems to be asm/system.h. It holds a number of
low level bits with no/few dependencies that are commonly used (eg.
memory barriers) and a number of bits with more dependencies that
aren't used in many places (eg. switch_to()).
These patches break asm/system.h up into the following core pieces:
(1) asm/barrier.h
Move memory barriers here. This already done for MIPS and Alpha.
(2) asm/switch_to.h
Move switch_to() and related stuff here.
(3) asm/exec.h
Move arch_align_stack() here. Other process execution related bits
could perhaps go here from asm/processor.h.
(4) asm/cmpxchg.h
Move xchg() and cmpxchg() here as they're full word atomic ops and
frequently used by atomic_xchg() and atomic_cmpxchg().
(5) asm/bug.h
Move die() and related bits.
(6) asm/auxvec.h
Move AT_VECTOR_SIZE_ARCH here.
Other arch headers are created as needed on a per-arch basis."

module_param(bool) used to counter-intuitively take an int. In
fddd5201 (mid-2009) we allowed bool or int/unsigned int using a messy
trick.
It's time to remove the int/unsigned int option. For this version
it'll simply give a warning, but it'll break next kernel version.

Just convert all the files that have an nmi handler to the new routines.
Most of it is straight forward conversion. A couple of places needed some
tweaking like kgdb which separates the debug notifier from the nmi handler
and mce removes a call to notify_die.

The things that get converted are the registeration/unregistration routines

Commit b826291c, "drivercore/dt: add a match table pointer to struct
device" added an of_match pointer to struct device to cache the
of_match_table entry discovered at driver match time. This was unsafe
because matching is not an atomic operation with probing a driver. If
two or more drivers are attempted to be matched to a driver at the
same time, then the cached matching entry pointer could get
overwritten.
This patch reverts the of_match cache pointer and reworks all users to
call of_match_device() directly instead.

of_bus is deprecated in favor of the plain platform bus. This patch
merges the ipmi OF driver with the existing platform driver.
CONFIG_PPC_OF occurrances are removed or replaced with CONFIG_OF.
Compile tested with and without CONFIG_OF. Tested OF probe and
default probe cases.

This patch fixes an OOPS triggered when calling modprobe ipmi_si a
second time after the first modprobe returned without finding any ipmi
devices. This can happen if you reload the module after having the
first module load fail. The driver was not deregistering from PNP in
that case.
Peter Huewe originally reported this patch and supplied a fix, I have a
different patch based on Linus' suggestion that cleans things up a bit
more.

They are a handful of places in the code that register a die_notifier
as a catch all in case no claims the NMI. Unfortunately, they trigger
on events like DIE_NMI and DIE_NMI_IPI, which depending on when they
registered may collide with other handlers that have the ability to
determine if the NMI is theirs or not.
The function unknown_nmi_error() makes one last effort to walk the
die_chain when no one else has claimed the NMI before spitting out
messages that the NMI is unknown.
This is a better spot for these devices to execute any code without
colliding with the other handlers.
The two drivers modified are only compiled on x86 arches I believe, so
they shouldn't be affected by other arches that may not have
DIE_NMIUNKNOWN defined.

The IPMI smi_watcher will be used to catch the IPMI interface as they
come or go. In order to communicate with the correct IPMI device, it
should be confirmed whether it is what we wanted especially on the
system with multiple IPMI devices. But the new_smi callback function
of smi_watcher provides very limited info(only the interface number
and dev pointer) and there is no detailed info about the low level
interface. For example: which mechansim registers the IPMI
interface(ACPI, PCI, DMI and so on).
This is to add one interface that can get more info of low-level IPMI
device. For example: the ACPI device handle will be returned for the
pnp_acpi IPMI device.

All file_operations should get a .llseek operation so we can make
nonseekable_open the default for future file operations without a
.llseek pointer.
The three cases that we can automatically detect are no_llseek, seq_lseek
and default_llseek. For cases where we can we can automatically prove that
the file offset is always ignored, we use noop_llseek, which maintains
the current behavior of not returning an error from a seek.
New drivers should normally not use noop_llseek but instead use no_llseek
and call nonseekable_open at open time. Existing drivers can be converted
to do the same when the maintainer knows for certain that no user code
relies on calling seek on the device file.
The generated code is often incorrectly indented and right now contains
comments that clarify for each added line why a specific variant was
chosen. In the version that gets submitted upstream, the comments will
be gone and I will manually fix the indentation, because there does not
seem to be a way to do that using coccinelle.
Some amount of new code is currently sitting in linux-next that should get
the same modifications, which I will do at the end of the merge window.

All these files use the big kernel lock in a trivial
way to serialize their private file operations,
typically resulting from an earlier semi-automatic
pushdown from VFS.
None of these drivers appears to want to lock against
other code, and they all use the BKL as the top-level
lock in their file operations, meaning that there
is no lock-order inversion problem.
Consequently, we can remove the BKL completely,
replacing it with a per-file mutex in every case.
Using a scripted approach means we can avoid
typos.

This is one of the most interesting users of module parameters in the
tree, so weaning it off the old-style non-const module_param_call
scheme is a useful exercise.
I was confused by set_param_int/get_param_int (vs. the normal
param_set_int and param_get_int), so I renamed set_param_int to
set_param_timeout, and re-used param_get_int directly instead of
get_param_int. I also implemented param_check_wdog_ifnum and
param_check_timeout, so now the ifnum_to_use and timeout/pretimeout
parameters can just use plain module_param().

Fix a regression introduced by ae74e823cb ("ipmi: add parameter to limit
CPU usage in kipmid").
Some systems were seeing CPU usage go up dramatically with the recent
changes to try to reduce timer usage in the IPMI driver. This was traced
down to schedule_timeout_interruptible(1) being changed to
schedule_timeout_interruptbile(0). Revert that part of the change.

The ipmi code will never register a PCI or Open Firmware driver if a
hardcoded device is provided by the user by providing device addresses via
the module parameters. This can cause us to attempt to unregister a
driver that was never registered, resulting in an oops. Keep track of
registration in order to avoid this.
Fixes a post-2.6.34 regression.

If run_to_completion flag is set, it means that we are running in a
single-threaded mode, and thus no locks are held.
This fixes a deadlock when IPMI notifier is being called during panic.

The timeouts in IPMI are in the 1-5 second range in message handling, so a
1 second timeout is a reasonable thing to do. This should help with
reducing power consumption on idle systems.
