Nick Desaulniers 0aee6bec0f Documentation/llvm: add Chimera Linux, Google and Meta datacenters
Chimera Linux is a Linux distribution from 2021 that builds its kernels
with Clang.

Google transitioned its data center fleet to run Clang built kernels in
2021, and Meta did so as well in 2022. Meta talked about this at LPC
2022 at a talk titled Kernel Live Patching at Scale.

These were important milestones for building the kernel with Clang.
Making note of them helps improve confidence in the project.

Paulo Miguel Almeida 40bf2fcd85 scripts/tags.sh: choose which directories to exclude from being indexed
It's common for drivers that share same physical components to also
duplicate source code (or at least portions of it). A good example is
both drivers/gpu/drm/amdgpu/* and drivers/gpu/drm/radeon/* have a header
file called atombios.h.

While their contents aren't the same, a lot of their structs have
the exact same names which makes navigating through the code base a bit
messy as cscope will show up 'references' across drivers which aren't
exactly correct.

Add IGNORE_DIRS variable, which specifies which directories
to be ignored from indexing.

Example:
        make ARCH=x86 IGNORE_DIRS="drivers/gpu/drm/radeon tools" cscope

Masahiro Yamada ce697ccee1 kbuild: remove head-y syntax
Kbuild puts the objects listed in head-y at the head of vmlinux.
Conventionally, we do this for head*.S, which contains the kernel entry
point.

A counter approach is to control the section order by the linker script.
Actually, the code marked as __HEAD goes into the ".head.text" section,
which is placed before the normal ".text" section.

I do not know if both of them are needed. From the build system
perspective, head-y is not mandatory. If you can achieve the proper code
placement by the linker script only, it would be cleaner.

I collected the current head-y objects into head-object-list.txt. It is
a whitelist. My hope is it will be reduced in the long run.

Masahiro Yamada 3216484550 kbuild: use obj-y instead extra-y for objects placed at the head
The objects placed at the head of vmlinux need special treatments:

 - arch/$(SRCARCH)/Makefile adds them to head-y in order to place
them before other archives in the linker command line.

 - arch/$(SRCARCH)/kernel/Makefile adds them to extra-y instead of
obj-y to avoid them going into built-in.a.

This commit gets rid of the latter.

Create vmlinux.a to collect all the objects that are unconditionally
linked to vmlinux. The objects listed in head-y are moved to the head
of vmlinux.a by using 'ar m'.

With this, arch/$(SRCARCH)/kernel/Makefile can consistently use obj-y
for builtin objects.

There is no *.o that is directly linked to vmlinux. Drop unneeded code
in scripts/clang-tools/gen_compile_commands.py.

$(AR) mPi needs 'T' to workaround the llvm-ar bug. The fix was suggested
by Nathan Chancellor [1].

Miguel Ojeda d07479b211 docs: add Rust documentation
Most of the documentation for Rust is written within the source code
itself, as it is idiomatic for Rust projects. This applies to both
the shared infrastructure at `rust/` as well as any other Rust module
(e.g. drivers) written across the kernel.

However, these documents contain general information that does not
fit particularly well in the source code, like the Quick Start guide.

It also contains a few other small changes elsewhere in the
documentation folder.

Nathan Chancellor e9c281928c kbuild: Make $(LLVM) more flexible
The LLVM make variable allows a developer to quickly switch between the
GNU and LLVM tools. However, it does not handle versioned binaries, such
as the ones shipped by Debian, as LLVM=1 just defines the tool variables
with the unversioned binaries.

There was some discussion during the review of the patch that introduces
LLVM=1 around versioned binaries, ultimately coming to the conclusion
that developers can just add the folder that contains the unversioned
binaries to their PATH, as Debian's versioned suffixed binaries are
really just symlinks to the unversioned binaries in /usr/lib/llvm-#/bin:

$ realpath /usr/bin/clang-14
/usr/lib/llvm-14/bin/clang

$ PATH=/usr/lib/llvm-14/bin:$PATH make ... LLVM=1

However, that can be cumbersome to developers who are constantly testing
series with different toolchains and versions. It is simple enough to
support these versioned binaries directly in the Kbuild system by
allowing the developer to specify the version suffix with LLVM=, which
is shorter than the above suggestion:

$ make ... LLVM=-14

It does not change the meaning of LLVM=1 (which will continue to use
unversioned binaries) and it does not add too much additional complexity
to the existing $(LLVM) code, while allowing developers to quickly test
their series with different versions of the whole LLVM suite of tools.

Some developers may build LLVM from source but not add the binaries to
their PATH, as they may not want to use that toolchain systemwide.
Support those developers by allowing them to supply the directory that
the LLVM tools are available in, as it is no more complex to support
than the version suffix change above.

$ make ... LLVM=/path/to/llvm/

Update and reorder the documentation to reflect these new additions.
At the same time, notate that LLVM=0 is not the same as just omitting it
altogether, which has confused people in the past.

Elliot Berman f67695c996 kbuild: Add environment variables for userprogs flags
Allow additional arguments be passed to userprogs compilation.
Reproducible clang builds need to provide a sysroot and gcc path to
ensure the same toolchain is used across hosts. KCFLAGS is not currently
used for any user programs compilation, so add new USERCFLAGS and
USERLDFLAGS which serves similar purpose as HOSTCFLAGS/HOSTLDFLAGS.

Clang might detect GCC installation on hosts which have it installed
to a default location in /. With addition of these environment
variables, you can specify flags such as:

$ make USERCFLAGS=--sysroot=/path/to/sysroot

This can also be used to specify different sysroots such as musl or
bionic which may be installed on the host in paths that the compiler
may not search by default.

Masahiro Yamada 8212f8986d kbuild: use more subdir- for visiting subdirectories while cleaning
Documentation/kbuild/makefiles.rst suggests to use "archclean" for
cleaning arch/$(SRCARCH)/boot/, but it is not a hard requirement.

Since commit d92cc4d516 ("kbuild: require all architectures to have
arch/$(SRCARCH)/Kbuild"), we can use the "subdir- += boot" trick for
all architectures. This can take advantage of the parallel option (-j)
for "make clean".

I also cleaned up the comments in arch/$(SRCARCH)/Makefile. The "archdep"
target no longer exists.

Change all links from using the lkml redirector to the lore redirector,
as the kernel.org admin recently indicated: we shouldn't be using
lkml.kernel.org anymore because the domain can create confusion, as it
indicates it is only valid for messages sent to the LKML; the convention
has been to use https://lore.kernel.org/r/msgid for this reason.

In this process also change three links from using http to https.

Nick Desaulniers f12b034afe scripts/Makefile.clang: default to LLVM_IAS=1
LLVM_IAS=1 controls enabling clang's integrated assembler via
-integrated-as. This was an explicit opt in until we could enable
assembler support in Clang for more architecures. Now we have support
and CI coverage of LLVM_IAS=1 for all architecures except a few more
bugs affecting s390 and powerpc.

This commit flips the default from opt in via LLVM_IAS=1 to opt out via
LLVM_IAS=0. CI systems or developers that were previously doing builds
with CC=clang or LLVM=1 without explicitly setting LLVM_IAS must now
explicitly opt out via LLVM_IAS=0, otherwise they will be implicitly
opted-in.

This finally shortens the command line invocation when cross compiling
with LLVM to simply:

$ make ARCH=arm64 LLVM=1

Masahiro Yamada b75b0a819a kconfig: change defconfig_list option to environment variable
"defconfig_list" is a weird option that defines a static symbol that
declares the list of base config files in case the .config does not
exist yet.

This is quite different from other normal symbols; we just abused the
"string" type and the "default" properties to list out the input files.
They must be fixed values since these are searched for and loaded in
the parse stage.

It is an ugly hack, and should not exist in the first place. Providing
this feature as an environment variable is a saner approach.

Linus Torvalds 24880bef41 Remove oprofile and dcookies support
The "oprofile" user-space tools don't use the kernel OPROFILE support any more,
and haven't in a long time. User-space has been converted to the perf
 interfaces.

The dcookies stuff is only used by the oprofile code. Now that oprofile's
support is getting removed from the kernel, there is no need for dcookies as
 well.

Remove kernel's old oprofile and dcookies support.
