Commit 49d9e77e72 ("ALSA: hda - Fix system panic when DMA > 40 bits
for Nvidia audio controllers") simply disabled any DMA exceeding 32
bits for NVidia devices, even though they are capable of performing
DMA up to 40 bits. On some architectures (such as arm64), system memory
is not guaranteed to be 32-bit addressable by PCI devices, and so this
change prevents NVidia devices from working on platforms such as AMD
Seattle.
Since the original commit already mentioned that up to 40 bits of DMA
is supported, and given that the code has been updated in the meantime
to support a 40 bit DMA mask on other devices, revert commit 49d9e77e72
and explicitly set the DMA mask to 40 bits for NVidia devices.

the input devices use the different adc, as a result, dyn_adc_switch

In this situation, it is safe to control the micmute led according to

current input device path is active, while other input device paths

resolved by picking our version, plus manually checking the diff with

DP MST provides the capability to send multiple video and audio streams
through a single port. This requires the API's between i915 and audio
drivers to distinguish between multiple audio capable displays that can be
connected to a port. Currently only the port identity is shared in the
APIs. This patch adds support for MST with an additional parameter
'int pipe'. The existing parameter 'port' does not change it's meaning.
pipe =
MST : display pipe that the stream originates from
Non-MST : -1
Affected APIs:
struct i915_audio_component_ops
- int (*sync_audio_rate)(struct device *, int port, int rate);
+ int (*sync_audio_rate)(struct device *, int port, int pipe,
+ int rate);
- int (*get_eld)(struct device *, int port, bool *enabled,
- unsigned char *buf, int max_bytes);
+ int (*get_eld)(struct device *, int port, int pipe,
+ bool *enabled, unsigned char *buf, int max_bytes);
struct i915_audio_component_audio_ops
- void (*pin_eld_notify)(void *audio_ptr, int port);
+ void (*pin_eld_notify)(void *audio_ptr, int port, int pipe);
This patch makes dummy changes in the audio drivers (thanks Libin) for
build to succeed. The audio side drivers will send the right 'pipe' values
for MST in patches that will follow.

Realtek codec driver expects an implicit rule where either the codec
SSID or the pincfg NID 0x1d contains the some information encoded in
some bits. One of the expected information is there is the
availability of PC beep, and the driver doesn't build up the PC beep
control if this is *supposed* to be disabled there.
Meanwhile, Lenovo doesn't seem to follow this requirement (yes it's
non-standard after all), and the BIOS sets just the normal SSID and
the pincfg values. This resulted in the lack of PC beep on a few
machines, purely with a lucky or unlucky number. It didn't bother
most people, but some people still demand the PC beep, as found in bug
reports.
This patch just adds the fixup chain to Lenovo machines to skip the
SKU checks. Then the beep control will show up in the mixer, and user
can still decide to enable / disable it via the standard mixer
interface.

For SKL and later Intel chips, we control the power well per codec
basis via link_power callback since the commit [03b135cebc47: ALSA:
hda - remove dependency on i915 power well for SKL].
However, there are a few exceptional cases where the gfx registers are
accessed from the audio driver: namely the wakeup override bit
toggling at (both system and runtime) resume. This seems causing a
kernel warning when accessed during the power well down (and likely
resulting in the bogus register accesses).
This patch puts the proper power up / down sequence around the resume
code so that the wakeup bit is fiddled properly while the power is
up. (The other callback, sync_audio_rate, is used only in the PCM
callback, so it's guaranteed in the power-on.)
Also, by this proper power up/down, the instantaneous flip of wakeup
bit in the resume callback that was introduced by the commit
[033ea349a7cd: ALSA: hda - Fix Skylake codec timeout] becomes
superfluous, as snd_hdac_display_power() already does it. So we can
clean it up together.

The HDMI/DP audio output on ATI/AMD chips got broken due to the recent
restructuring of chmap. Fortunately, Daniel Exner could bisect, and
pointed the culprit commit [739ffee97ed5: ALSA: hda - Add hdmi chmap
verb programming ops to chmap object].
This commit moved some ops from hdmi_ops to chmap_ops, and reassigned
the ops in the embedded chmap object in hdmi_spec instead.
Unfortunately, the reassignment of these ops in patch_atihdmi() were
moved into an if block that is performed only for old chips. Thus, on
newer chips, the generic ops is still used, which doesn't work for
such ATI/AMD chips.
This patch addresses the regression, simply by moving the assignment
of chmap ops to the right place.

The HD-audio reconfig function got broken in the recent kernels,
typically resulting in a failure like:
snd_hda_intel 0000:00:1b.0: control 3:0:0:Playback Channel Map:0 is already present
This is because of the code restructuring to move the PCM and control
instantiation into the codec drive probe, by the commit [bcd96557bd0a:
ALSA: hda - Build PCMs and controls at codec driver probe]. Although
the commit above removed the calls of snd_hda_codec_build_pcms() and
*_build_controls() at the controller driver probe, the similar calls
in the reconfig were still left forgotten. This caused the
conflicting and duplicated PCMs and controls.
The fix is trivial: just remove these superfluous calls from
reconfig_codec().

Since the recent rewrite of HD-audio infrastructure,
CONFIG_SND_HDA_RECONFIG has a slightly different meaning. In the
earlier versions, it implicitly assumed only the usage via hwdep sysfs
entries. Meanwhile, in the recent version, this option is meant to
enable the reconfig code in HD-audio driver, which may be used by the
patch loader without hwdep interface.
This patch tries to clarify the usage pattern a bit better, hopefully
avoid the further confusion.

The recent bug report suggests that BCLK setup for i915 HSW/BDW needs
to be updated at each HDMI hotplug, not only at initialization and
resume. That is, we need to update HSW_EM4 and HSW_EM5 registers at
ELD notification, too. Otherwise the HDMI audio may be out of sync
and played in a wrong pitch.
However, the HDA codec driver has no access to the controller
registers, and currently the code managing these registers is in
hda_intel.c, i.e. local to the controller driver. For allowing the
explicit BCLK update from the codec driver, as in this patch, the
former haswell_set_bclk() in hda_intel.c is moved to hdac_i915.c and
exposed as snd_hdac_i915_set_bclk(). This is called from both the HDA
controller driver and intel_pin_eld_notify() in HDMI codec driver.
Along with this change, snd_hdac_get_display_clk() gets dropped as
it's no longer used.

Although one weird behavior about the input path (inconsistent D0/D3
switch) on Cirrus CS420x codecs was fixed in the previous commit,
there is still an issue on some Mac machines: the capture stream
stalls when switching the ADCs on the fly. More badly, this keeps
stuck until the next reboot.
The dynamic ADC switching is already a bit fragile and assuming
optimistically that the chip accepts the frequent power changes. On
Cirrus codecs, this doesn't seem applicable.
As a quick workaround, we pin down the ADCs to keep up in D0 when
spec->dyn_adc_switch is set. In this way, the ADCs are kept up only
for the system that were confirmed to be broken.

The Optiplex 9020m with Haswell-DT processor needs a quirk for the
headset jack at the front of the machine to be able to use microphones.
A quirk for this model was originally added in 3127899, but c77900e

Unfortunately, pin configurations can changed based on firmware/BIOS
versions, and the generic version doesn't have any effect on newer

We've got a regression report that the recording on Mac with a cirrus
codec doesn't work any longer. This turned out to be the missing
power up to D0 by power_save_node enablement.
After analyzing the traces, we found out that the culprit is that the
codec advertises the "actual" power state of a few nodes to be D0
while the "target" power state is D3. This inconsistency is usually
OK, as it implies the power transition. But in the case of cirrus
codec, this seems to be stuck to D3 while it's not actually D0.
This patch addresses the issue by checking the power state difference
more strictly. It sends the power-state change verb unless both the
target and the actual power states show the given value.
We may introduce yet another flag indicating the possible broken
hardware power state, but it's anyway safer to set the proper power
state even in a transition (at least it's harmless as long as the
target state is same). So this simpler change was applied now.

While the previous commit fixed the missing monitor_present flag
update, it may be still in an inconsistent state while the driver
repolls: the flag itself is updated, but the eld_valid flag and the
contents don't follow until the repoll finishes (and may be repeated
for a few times).
The basic problem is that pin_eld->monitor_present is updated in the
caller side. This should have been updated only in update_eld(). So,
the proper fix is to avoid accessing pin_eld but only spec->temp_eld.
Signed-off-by: Takashi Iwai <tiwai@suse.de>
The commit [bd48128539ab: ALSA: hda - Fix forgotten HDMI
monitor_present update] covered the missing update of monitor_present
flag, but this caused a regression for devices without the i915 eld
notifier. Since the old code supposed that pin_eld->monitor_present
was updated by the caller side, the hdmi_present_sense_via_verbs()
doesn't update the temporary eld->monitor_present but only
pin_eld->monitor_present, which is now overridden in update_eld().
The fix is to update pin_eld->monitor_present as well before calling
update_eld().
Note that this may still leave monitor_present flag in an inconsistent
state when the driver repolls, but this is at least the old behavior.
More proper fix will follow in the later patch.

acpi_dev_present() was originally named after pci_dev_present()
to signify the similarity of the two functions.
However Rafael J. Wysocki pointed out that the exported function
acpi_dev_present() is easily confused with the non-exported
acpi_device_is_present(). Additionally in ACPI parlance the term
"present" usually refers to the "device is present" bit returned
by the _STA control method, yet acpi_dev_present() merely checks
presence in the namespace. It does not invoke _STA at all, let
alone check the "device is present" bit.
As suggested by Rafael, rename the function to acpi_dev_found()
and adjust all existing call sites.

The existing TLV callback implementation copies all of the
cea_channel_speaker_allocation map table to the TLV container
irrespective of what is reported by sink. This is of little use
to the userspace application.
With this patch, it parses the spk_alloc block as queried from
the ELD, and copies only the corresponding mapping channel
allocation entries from the cea channel speaker allocation table.
Thus the user can parse the TLV container to identify sink's
capability and set the channel map accordingly.
It shouldn't impact the behavior in AMD chipset, as this makes
use of already parsed spk alloc block to calculate the channel
map.

Since we have the fixed pin-port mapping for Intel IronLake (IbexPeak)
and Baytrail (ValleyView) platforms in the code side, now it's time to
add the support in the codec driver side. This patch simply enables
the i915 ELD notifier for these in addition with the fix of the
mapping from the port to NID in the callback.
Signed-off-by: Takashi Iwai <tiwai@suse.de>
Intel IronLake and ValleyView platforms have different HDMI widget pin
and digital port mapping from other newer ones. The recent ones
(HSW+) have NID 0x05 to 0x07 for port B to port D, while these chips
have NID 0x04 to 0x06.
For adapting this mapping, pass the codec object instead of the bus
object to snd_hdac_sync_audio_rate() and snd_hdac_acomp_get_eld() so
that they can check the codec ID and calculate the mapping properly.
The changes in the HDMI codec driver side will follow in the later

Intel SandyBridge and IvyBridge (CougarPoint and PantherPoint
platforms) have also the same digital port vs audio widget mapping
(from port B = NID 0x05 to port D = NID 0x07) as Haswell & co.
So, we can reuse the existing functions for HSW+ for these platforms
without changing there, but just by re-adding the on-demand i915
binding in HDMI codec driver.

For reducing the splat of is_haswell_plus() or such macros, this patch
introduces pin_cvt_fixup() ops to hdmi_spec. For HSW+ and VLV+
codecs, set this ops so that the driver can call the Intel-specific
workarounds appropriately.
A gratis bonus that we can remove the mux_id argument from
hdmi_choose_cvt(), too, since the fixup function always refers the
mux_idx from the given per_pin object.

The need for reprogramming the AMP mute bit at each audio info frame
setup isn't always specific to Intel chips. It's safer to set it
generically for all codecs with the amp bit, as this verb execution
itself isn't too much load. This eliminates one usage of
is_haswell_plus() macro, after all.

We have too many Intel-specific codes in patch_hdmi_generic() despite
its function name. And this makes it difficult to adjust per chipset,
e.g. for allowing the audio notifier on an old chipset, one would need
to add an explicit if() check.
This patch attempts some code refactoring and cleanups in this regard;
the Intel-specific codes are moved out of patch_generic_hdmi() into
the new functions, patch_i915_hsw_hdmi() and patch_i915_byt_hdmi(),
depending on the chipset. The other old Intel chipsets keep using
patch_generic_hdmi() without Intel hacks. The existing
patch_generic_hdmi() is also split to a few components so that they
can be called from the Intel codec parsers.
There are still many is_haswell*() and is_valleyview*() macro usages
in the code. They will be cleaned up later. For the time being, only
the entry are concerned.
Along with this change, the i915_bound flag and the on-demand i915
component binding have been removed as a cleanup, since there is no
user at this moment. This will be added back later once when Cougar
Point and else start using the i915 eld notifier.

The recent addition of on-demand i915 audio component binding in the
codec driver seems leading to the unbalanced i915 power refcount,
according to Intel CI tests. Typically, it gets a kernel WARNING
like:

The scenario is like below:
- HD-audio driver and i915 driver are probed concurrently at the
(almost) same time; HDA bus tries to bind with i915, but it fails
because i915 initialization is still being processed.
- Later on, HD-audio probes the HDMI codec, where it again tries to
bind with i915. At this time, it succeeds.
- At finishing the probe of HDA, it decreases the refcount as if it
were already bound at the bus probe, since the component is bound
now. This triggers a kernel WARNING due to the unbalance.
As a workaround, in this patch, we just disable the on-demand i915
component binding in the codec driver. This essentially reverts back
to the state of 4.4 kernel.
We know that this is no real solution, but it's a minimalistic simple
change that can be applied to 4.5.x kernel as stable.

snd_hdac_sync_audio_rate() call is mandatory only for HSW and later
models, but we call the function unconditionally blindly assuming that
the function doesn't do anything harmful. But since recently, the
function checks the validity of the passed pin NID, and eventually
spews the warning if an unexpected pin is passed. This is seen on old
chips like Baytrail.
The fix is to limit the call of this function again only for the chips
with the proper binding. This can be identified by the same flag as
the eld notifier.

The commit [b62232d429fa: ALSA: hda - Limit i915 HDMI binding only for
HSW and later] tried to limit the usage of i915 audio notifier to the
recent Intel models and switch to the old method on pre-Haswell
models. However, it assumed that the i915 component binding hasn't
been done on such models, and the assumption was wrong: namely,
Baytrail had already the i915 component binding due to powerwell
control. Thus, the workaround wasn't applied to Baytrail.
For fixing this properly, this patch introduces a new flag indicating
the usage of audio notifier and codec_has_acomp() refers to this flag
instead of checking the existence of audio component.

The recent change in HD-audio HDMI/DP codec driver for allowing the
dynamic PCM binding introduced a new spec->pcm_mutex. One of the
protected area by this mutex is hdmi_present_sense(). As reported by
Intel CI tests, unfortunately, the new mutex causes a deadlock when
the hotplug/unplug is triggered during the codec is in runtime
suspend. The buggy code path is like the following:
hdmi_unsol_event() -> ...
-> hdmi_present_sense()
==> ** here taking pcm_mutex
-> hdmi_present_sense_via_verbs()
-> snd_hda_power_up_pm() -> ... (runtime resume calls)
-> generic_hdmi_resume()
-> hdmi_present_sense()
==> ** here taking pcm_mutex again!
As we can see here, the problem is that the mutex is taken before
snd_hda_power_up_pm() call that triggers the runtime resume. That is,
the obvious solution is to move the power up/down call outside the
mutex; it is exactly what this patch provides.
The patch also clarifies why this bug wasn't caught beforehand. We
used to have the i915 audio component for hotplug for all Intel chips,
and in that code path, there is no power up required but the
information is taken directly from the graphics side. However, we
recently switched back to the old method for some old Intel chips due
to regressions, and now the deadlock issue is surfaced.

Currently the interrupt handler of HD-audio driver assumes that no irq
update is needed while processing the irq. But in reality, it has
been confirmed that the HW irq is issued even during the irq
handling. Since we clear the irq status at the beginning, process the
interrupt, then exits from the handler, the lately issued interrupt is
left untouched without being properly processed.
This patch changes the interrupt handler code to loop over the
check-and-process. The handler tries repeatedly as long as the IRQ
status are turned on, and either stream or CORB/RIRB is handled.
For checking the stream handling, snd_hdac_bus_handle_stream_irq()

Since the recent integration of kctl jack and input jack layers, we
can basically build the jack layer even without input devices. That
is, the jack layer itself can be built with conditional to enable the
input device support or not, while the users may enable always
CONFIG_SND_JACK unconditionally.
For achieving it, this patch changes the following:
- A new Kconfig, CONFIG_SND_JACK_INPUT_DEV, was introduced to indicate
whether the jack layer supports the input device,
- A few items in snd_jack struct and relevant codes are conditionally
built upon CONFIG_SND_JACK_INPUT_DEV,
- The users of CONFIG_SND_JACK drop the messy dependency on
CONFIG_INPUT.

The hda_jack_tbl entries are managed by snd_array for allowing
multiple jacks. It's good per se, but the problem is that struct
hda_jack_callback keeps the hda_jack_tbl pointer. Since snd_array
doesn't preserve each pointer at resizing the array, we can't keep the
original pointer but have to deduce the pointer at each time via
snd_array_entry() instead. Actually, this resulted in the deference
to the wrong pointer on codecs that have many pins such as CS4208.
This patch replaces the pointer to the NID value as the search key.
As an unexpected good side effect, this even simplifies the code, as
only NID is needed in most cases.

Jack is created based on pcm.
Apply the acomp jack rule to dyn_pcm_assign.
For dyn_pcm_assign:
Driver does not use hda_jack. It operates snd_jack directly.
snd_jack pointer will be stored in spec->pcm.jack instead of
the current spec->acomp_jack. When pcm is assigned to pin,
jack will be assigned to pin automatically.
For !dyn_pcm_assign:
Driver continues using hda_jack for less impact on the old cases.
Pcm is statically assigned to pin. So is jack. spec->pcm.jack
saves the snd_jack pointer created in hda_jack.

When monitor is connected, find a proper PCM for the monitor.
When monitor is disconnected, unbind the PCM from the pin.
The binding policy (use Intel platform as example) is:
1. Try to use the legacy pin-pcm mapping for the device entry 0
of the pin.
2. If step 1 fails, try to bind pin to the backup PCMs. For example,
on Intel platform, if DP MST is enabled, 5 PCMs will be created.
PCM 3, PCM 7, PCM 8 are supposed to be used by device entry 0 of

This means PCM will not be statically bound with pin.
When there is a monitor connected, the corresponding pin

Currently HD-audio driver on Intel Skylake or Broxteon gives an error
message when binding with i915 audio component fails. However, this
isn't any serious error on a system without Intel graphics. Indeed
there are such systems, where a third-party codec (e.g. Creative) is
put on the mobo while using other discrete GPU (e.g. Nvidia).
Printing a kernel "error" message is overreaction in such a case.
This patch downgrades the print level for that message. For systems

another kernel error message is shown in addition to make clear what

Lenovo Thinkpads with Realtek codecs may still have some loud
crackling noises at reboot/shutdown even though a few previous fixes
have been applied. It's because the previous fix (disabling the
default shutup callback) takes effect only at transition of the codec
power state. Meanwhile, at reboot or shutdown, we don't take down the
codec power as default, thus it triggers the same problem unless the
codec is powered down casually by runtime PM.
This patch tries to address the issue. It gives two things:

Intel Atom processors seem to have a problem at recording when
bdl_pos_adj is set to an odd value. When a value like 1 is used, it
may drop the samples unexpectedly. Actually, for the old Atoms, we
used to set AZX_DRIVER_SCH type, and this assigns 32 as default.
Meanwhile the newer chips, Baytrail and Braswell, are set as
AZX_DRIVER_PCH, and the lower default value, 1, is assigned.
This patch changes the default values for these chipsets to a safer
default, 32, again. Since changing the driver type (AZX_DRIVER_XXX)
leads to the rename of the driver string, it would result in a
possible regression. So, we can't change the type. Instead, in this
patch, manual (ugly) PCI ID checks are added on top.
A drawback by this increase is the slight increase of the latency, but
it's a sub-ms order in normal situations, so mostly negligible.

A couple of i915_audio_component ops have been added and accessed

Since we have a new audio component ops to fetch the current ELD and
state now, we can reduce the usage of unsol event of HDMI/DP pins.
The unsol event isn't only unreliable, but it also needs the power
up/down of the codec and link at each time, which is a significant
power and time loss.
In this patch, the jack creation and unsol/jack event handling are
modified to use the audio component for the dedicated Intel chips.
The jack handling got slightly more codes than a simple usage of
hda_jack layer since we need to deal directly with snd_jack object;
the hda_jack layer is basically designed for the pin sense read and
unsol events, both of which aren't used any longer in our case.

Due to the recent change, HDA controller driver for Intel PCH tries to
bind i915 audio component always at the probe time no matter whether
HDMI/DP codec is found. This is, however, superflulous for old
chipsets (e.g. on IVB) where they don't have always the HDMI/DP codecs
but often have only a discrete GPU instead.
For the newer chipsets, we need already the i915 binding from the
beginning due to power well control. Meanwhile, for older chipsets
where we don't need power well, we don't need the i915 binding at the
controller level.
This patch removes again the i915 binding in the HDA controller driver
for old Intel PCHs, but adds the binding in HDMI/DP codec driver
instead. This allows still the use of the direct notification from
the graphics driver while we can avoid the unnecessary load of i915
driver for machines only with another GPU.

Lenovo Thinkpad T440s suffers from constant background noises, and it

https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-T400-T500-and-newer-T/T440s-speaker-noise/td-p/1339883
As the noise comes from the analog loopback path, disabling the path

Also, the machine gives significant cracking noises at PM suspend. A
workaround found by trial-and-error is to disable the shutup callback

snd-hda-intel driver tries to bind with i915 audio component always
when AZX_DCAPS_I915_POWERWELL is set in the driver caps. This was
mostly OK in the past, as the flag was applied only to a limited set
of devices, namely, Haswell and Broadwell. On these machines, i915
graphics is almost mandatory as long as HDMI/DP is concerned.
Recently the application of i915 binding was widened to more Intel
chips. On these chips, the chance of a kernel without i915 graphics
is much higher, and such user would hit an error like:
snd_hda_intel 0000:00:1b.0: failed to add i915 component master (-19)
Although the error itself is harmless, it's certainly superfluous even
to try binding with i915, if we already know that there isn't any.
This patch fixes it by simply defining AZX_DCAPS_I915_POWERWELL as 0
in the case without i915. Then all codes referring to this flag will
be optimized out by the compiler.

Many codecs, typically found on Realtek codecs, have the analog
loopback path merged to the secondary input of the middle of the
output paths. Currently, we don't offer the dynamic switching in such
configuration but let each loopback path mute by itself.
This should work well in theory, but in reality, we often see that
such a dead loopback path causes some background noises even if all
the elements get muted. Such a problem has been fixed by adding the
quirk accordingly to disable aamix, and it's the right fix, per se.
The only problem is that it's not so trivial to achieve it; user needs
to pass a hint string via patch module option or sysfs.
This patch gives a bit improvement on the situation: it adds "Loopback
Mixing" control element for such codecs like other codecs (e.g. IDT or
VIA codecs) with the individual loopback paths. User can turn on/off
the loopback path simply via a mixer app.
For keeping the compatibility, the loopback is still enabled on these
codecs. But user can try to turn it off if experiencing a suspicious
background or click noise on the fly, then build a static fixup later
once after the problem is addressed.
Other than the addition of the loopback enable/disablement control,
there should be no changes.

As i915 graphics driver provides the notification via audio component,
not only the currently implemented HSW+ and VLV+ platforms but also
all other PCH-based platforms (e.g. Cougar Point, Panther Point, etc)
can use this infrastructure. It'll improve the reliability and the
power consumption significantly, especially once when we implement the
ELD notification via component. As a preliminary, this patch enables
the usage of audio component for all PCH platforms.
The HDA controller just needs to set AZX_DCAPS_I915_POWERWELL flag
appropriately. The name of the flag is a bit confusing, but this
actually works even on the chips without the powerwell but accesses
only the other component ops.
In the HDMI/DP codec driver side, we just need to register/unregister
the notifier for such chips. This can be identified by checking the
audio_component field in the assigned hdac_bus.
One caveat is that PCH for Haswell and Broadwell must not be bound
with i915 audio component, as there are dedicated HD-audio HDMI
controllers on these platforms. Ditto for Poulsbo and Oaktrail as
they use gma500 graphics, not i915.

The recent addition of ELD notifier for Intel HDMI/DP codec may lead
the bad codec connection found as kernel messages like below:
Suspending console(s) (use no_console_suspend to debug)
hdmi_present_sense: snd_hda_codec_hdmi hdaudioC0D2: HDMI status: Codec=2 Pin=6 Presence_Detect=1 ELD_Valid=1

This seems appearing when the sound driver went to suspend before i915
driver. Then i915 driver disables HDMI/DP audio bit and calls the
registered notifier, and the HDA codec tries to handle it as a
hot(un)plug. But since the driver is already in the suspended state,
it fails miserably.
As this is a sort of spurious wakeup, it can be ignored safely, as
long as it's delivered during the system suspend. OTOH, if a
notification comes during the runtime suspend, the situation is
different: we need to wake up. But during the system suspend, such a
notification can't be the reason for a wakeup.
This patch addresses it by a simple check of the current sound card
status. The skipped notification doesn't matter because the HDA
driver will check the plugged status forcibly at the resume in
return.
Then, why the card status, not a runtime PM status or else? The HDA
controller driver is supposed to set the card status to D3 at the
system suspend but not at the runtime suspend. So we can see it as a
flag that is set only for the system suspend. Admittedly, it's a bit
ugly, but it should work well for now.

It turned out that many HP laptops suffer from the same problem as
fixed in commit [c932b98c1e47: ALSA: hda - Apply pin fixup for HP
ProBook 6550b]. But, it's tiresome to list up all such PCI SSIDs, as
there are really lots of HP machines.
Instead, we do a bit more clever, try to check the supposedly dock and
built-in headphone pins, and apply the fixup when both seem valid.
This rule can be applied generically to all models using the same
quirk, so we'll fix all in a shot.

For SKL, only the HDMI codec is in the display power well while the
HD-A controller isn't. So the codec flag 'link_power_control' is
set to request/release the display power via bus link_power ops.
For BXT, the power well design is the same as SKL, so the patch
should be applied to BXT too.

A reverse select is often more user-friendly, but in this case, it
makes hard to manage with the conflict with ZONE_DEVICE, so changed in

The HDMI codec parser may create a phantom jack, but the helper
function snd_hda_jack_add_kctl() treats always as a normal jack. This
is superfluous as the jack query is executed at each time the jack
sync is performed.
Since the HDMI codec parser is the only caller of this function, it's
easier to change back this directly calling the original
__snd_hda_jack_add_kctl() with phantom_jack parameter.

During the migration to HDA core code, we lost the workaround for 4k
BDL boundary. The flag exists in the new hdac_bus, but it's never
set. This resulted in the sudden sound stall on some controllers that
require this workaround like Creative Recon3D.
This patch fixes the issue by setting the flag for such controllers
properly.

We've had many reports that some Creative sound cards with CA0132
don't work well. Some reported that it starts working after reloading
the module, while some reported it starts working when a 32bit kernel
is used. All these facts seem implying that the chip fails to
communicate when the buffer is located in 64bit address.
This patch addresses these issues by just adding AZX_DCAPS_NO_64BIT
flag to the corresponding PCI entries. I casually had a chance to
test an SB Recon3D board, and indeed this seems helping.
Although this hasn't been tested on all Creative devices, it's safer
to assume that this restriction applies to the rest of them, too. So
the flag is applied to all Creative entries.

Finally we have a proper infrastructure to generate the modaliases
automatically, let's move to hda_device_id from the legacy
hda_codec_preset that contains basically the same information.
The patch function hook is stored in driver_data field, which is long,
and we need an explicit cast. Other than that, the conversion is
mostly straightforward. Each entry is even simplified using a macro,
and the lengthy (and error-prone) manual modaliases got removed.
As a result, we achieved a quite good diet:

Currently everyone and their dog has their own favourite spelling
for vga_switcheroo. This makes it hard to grep dmesg for log entries
relating to vga_switcheroo. It also makes it hard to find related
source files in the tree.
vga_switcheroo.c uses pr_fmt "vga_switcheroo". Use that everywhere.

The recent commit [7fbe824a0f0e: ALSA: hda - Update mixer name for the
lower codec address] tried to improve the mixer chip name assignment
in the order of codec address. However, this fix was utterly bogus;
it checks the field set in each codec, thus this value is reset at
each codec creation, of course. For really handling this priority,
the assignment has to be remembered in the common place, namely in
hda_bus, instead of hda_codec.
Fixes: 7fbe824a0f ('ALSA: hda - Update mixer name for the lower codec address')

In most cases, we prefer the onboard codec as the primary device, thus
it's better to set it as the mixer name. Currently, however, the
mixer name is updated per the device instantiation order, and user
gets often HDMI/DP or other seen as a mixer chip name. Also, if a
codec name is renamed by the driver, the old chip name might be left
still as the mixer name.
This patch addresses these issues by remembering the chip address that
was referred as the mixer name. When a codec with the same or lower
address gives its name, renew the mixer name accordingly, as it's
either the update of the codec name or we get likely the more
appropriate chip as the reference.

The recent widget power saving introduced some unavoidable click
noises on old IDT 92HD73xx chips while it still seems working on the
compatible new chips. In the bugzilla, we tried lots of tests and
workarounds, but they didn't help much. So, let's disable the feature
for these specific chips as the least (but safest) fix.

Lenovo Thinkpads with recent Realtek codecs seem suffering from click
noises at power transition since the introduction of widget power
saving in 4.1 kernel. Although this might be solved by some delays in
appropriate points, as a quick workaround, just disable the
power_save_node feature for now. The gain it gives is relatively
small, and this makes the situation back to pre 4.1 time.
This patch ended up with a bit more code changes than usual because
the existing fixup for Thinkpads is highly chained. Instead of adding
yet another chain, combine a few of them into a single fixup entry, as
a gratis cleanup.

The active attribute in struct vga_switcheroo_client denotes whether
the outputs are currently switched to this client. The attribute is
only meaningful for vga clients. It is never used for audio clients.
The function vga_switcheroo_register_audio_client() misuses this
attribute to store whether the audio device is fully initialized.
Most likely there was a misunderstanding about the meaning of
"active" when this was added.
Comment from Takashi's review:
"Not really. The full initialization of audio was meant that the audio
is active indeed. Admittedly, though, the active flag for each audio
client doesn't play any role because the audio always follows the gfx
state changes, and the value passed there doesn't reflect the actual
state due to the later change. So, I agree with the removal of the
flag itself -- or let the audio active flag following the
corresponding gfx flag. The latter will make the proc output more
consistent while the former is certainly more reduction of code."
Set the active attribute to false for audio clients. Remove the
active parameter from vga_switcheroo_register_audio_client() and
its sole caller, hda_intel.c:register_vga_switcheroo().
vga_switcheroo_register_audio_client() was introduced by 3e9e63dbd3
("vga_switcheroo: Add the support for audio clients"). Its use in
hda_intel.c was introduced by a82d51ed24 ("ALSA: hda - Support
VGA-switcheroo").
v1.1: The changes above imply that in find_active_client() the call
to client_is_vga() is now superfluous. Drop it.

The Tegra HD-audio controller driver causes deadlocks when loaded as a
module since the driver invokes request_module() at binding with the
codec driver. This patch works around it by deferring the probe in a
work like Intel HD-audio controller driver does. Although hovering
the codec probe stuff into udev would be a better solution, it may
cause other regressions, so let's try this band-aid fix until the more
proper solution gets landed.
