ipv4: add sysctl to accept packets with local source addresses
Change fib_validate_source() to accept packets with a local source address when
the "accept_local" sysctl is set for the incoming inet device. Combined with the
previous patches, this allows to communicate between multiple local interfaces
over the wire.

This new IOCTL exports all yet user-invisible states related to
exceptions, interrupts, and NMIs. Together with appropriate user space
changes, this fixes sporadic problems of vmsave/restore, live migration
and system reset.

When we migrate a kvm guest that uses pvclock between two hosts, we may
suffer a large skew. This is because there can be significant differences
between the monotonic clock of the hosts involved. When a new host with
a much larger monotonic time starts running the guest, the view of time
will be significantly impacted.
Situation is much worse when we do the opposite, and migrate to a host with
a smaller monotonic clock.
This proposed ioctl will allow userspace to inform us what is the monotonic
clock value in the source host, so we can keep the time skew short, and
more importantly, never goes backwards. Userspace may also need to trigger
the current data, since from the first migration onwards, it won't be
reflected by a simple call to clock_gettime() anymore.

Support for Xen PV-on-HVM guests can be implemented almost entirely in
userspace, except for handling one annoying MSR that maps a Xen
hypercall blob into guest address space.
A generic mechanism to delegate MSR writes to userspace seems overkill
and risks encouraging similar MSR abuse in the future. Thus this patch
adds special support for the Xen HVM MSR.
I implemented a new ioctl, KVM_XEN_HVM_CONFIG, that lets userspace tell
KVM which MSR the guest will write to, as well as the starting address
and size of the hypercall blobs (one each for 32-bit and 64-bit) that
userspace has loaded from files. When the guest writes to the MSR, KVM
copies one page of the blob from userspace to the guest.
I've tested this patch with a hacked-up version of Gerd's userspace
code, booting a number of guests (CentOS 5.3 i386 and x86_64, and
FreeBSD 8.0-RC1 amd64) and exercising PV network and block devices.

Define sysctl (tcp_cookie_size) to turn on and off the cookie option
default globally, instead of a compiled configuration option.
Define per socket option (TCP_COOKIE_TRANSACTIONS) for setting constant
data values, retrieving variable cookie values, and other facilities.
Move inline tcp_clear_options() unchanged from net/tcp.h to linux/tcp.h,
near its corresponding struct tcp_options_received (prior to changes).
This is a straightforward re-implementation of an earlier (year-old)
patch that no longer applies cleanly, with permission of the original
author (Adam Langley):

The commit 27fed4175a (ip: fix logic of
reverse path filter sysctl) has changed the logic of rp_filter. The
document about rp_filter is out of date. Now, setting
conf/all/rp_filte with 0 can also enable source validation.

This interface is mainly intended (and implemented) for ACPI _PPC BIOS
frequency limitations, but other cpufreq drivers can also use it for
similar use-cases.
Why is this needed:
Currently it's not obvious why cpufreq got limited.
People see cpufreq/scaling_max_freq reduced, but this could have
happened by:
- any userspace prog writing to scaling_max_freq
- thermal limitations
- hardware (_PPC in ACPI case) limitiations
Therefore export bios_limit (in kHz) to:
- Point the user that it's the BIOS (broken or intended) which limits
frequency
- Export it as a sysfs interface for userspace progs.
While this was a rarely used feature on laptops, there will appear
more and more server implemenations providing "Green IT" features like
allowing the service processor to limit the frequency. People want
to know about HW/BIOS frequency limitations.
All ACPI P-state driven cpufreq drivers are covered with this patch:
- powernow-k8
- powernow-k7
- acpi-cpufreq
Tested with a patched DSDT which limits the first two cores (_PPC returns 1)
via _PPC, exposed by bios_limit:

When a CPU is offlined on POWER currently, we call rtas_stop_self() and hand
the CPU back to the resource pool. This path is used for DLPAR which will
cause a change in the LPAR configuration which will be visible outside.
This patch changes the default state a CPU is put into when it is offlined.
On platforms which support ceding the processor to the hypervisor with
latency hint specifier value, during a cpu offline operation,
instead of calling rtas_stop_self(), we cede the vCPU to the hypervisor
while passing a latency hint specifier value. The Hypervisor can use this hint
to provide better energy savings. Also, during the offline
operation, the control of the vCPU remains with the LPAR as oppposed to
returning it to the resource pool.
The patch achieves this by creating an infrastructure to set the
preferred_offline_state() which can be either
- CPU_STATE_OFFLINE: which is the current behaviour of calling
rtas_stop_self()
- CPU_STATE_INACTIVE: which cedes the vCPU to the hypervisor with the latency
hint specifier.
The codepath which wants to perform a DLPAR operation can set the
preferred_offline_state() of a CPU to CPU_STATE_OFFLINE before invoking
cpu_down().
The patch also provides a boot-time command line argument to disable/enable
CPU_STATE_INACTIVE.

This adds "norecovery" mount option which disables temporal write
access to read-only mounts or snapshots during mount/recovery.
Without this option, write access will be even performed for those
types of mounts; the temporal write access is needed to mount root
file system read-only after an unclean shutdown.
This option will be helpful when user wants to prevent any write
access to the device.

Users on the linux-ext4 list recently complained about differences
across filesystems w.r.t. how to mount without a journal replay.
In the discussion it was noted that xfs's "norecovery" option is
perhaps more descriptively accurate than "noload," so let's make
that an alias for ext4.

It is anticipated that when sb_issue_discard starts doing
real work on trim-capable devices, we may see issues. Make
this mount-time optional, and default it to off until we know
that things are working out OK.

Catch an overly long wait for an old, dying active object when we want to
replace it with a new one. The probability is that all the slow-work threads
are hogged, and the delete can't get a look in.
What we do instead is:
(1) if there's nothing in the slow work queue, we sleep until either the dying
object has finished dying or there is something in the slow work queue
behind which we can queue our object.
(2) if there is something in the slow work queue, we return ETIMEDOUT to
fscache_lookup_object(), which then puts us back on the slow work queue,
presumably behind the deletion that we're blocked by. We are then
deferred for a while until we work our way back through the queue -
without blocking a slow-work thread unnecessarily.
A backtrace similar to the following may appear in the log without this patch:

Start processing an object's operations when that object moves into the DYING
state as the object cannot be destroyed until all its outstanding operations
have completed.
Furthermore, make sure that read and allocation operations handle being woken
up on a dead object. Such events are recorded in the Allocs.abt and
Retrvls.abt statistics as viewable through /proc/fs/fscache/stats.
The code for waiting for object activation for the read and allocation
operations is also extracted into its own function as it is much the same in
all cases, differing only in the stats incremented.

Handle netfs pages that the vmscan algorithm wants to evict from the pagecache

In the above backtrace, the following is happening:
(1) A page storage operation is being executed by a slow-work thread
(fscache_write_op()).
(2) FS-Cache farms the operation out to the cache to perform
(cachefiles_write_page()).
(3) CacheFiles is then calling Ext3 to perform the actual write, using Ext3's
standard write (do_sync_write()) under KERNEL_DS directly from the netfs
page.
(4) However, for Ext3 to perform the write, it must allocate some memory, in
particular, it must allocate at least one page cache page into which it
can copy the data from the netfs page.
(5) Under OOM conditions, the memory allocator can't immediately come up with
a page, so it uses vmscan to find something to discard
(try_to_free_pages()).
(6) vmscan finds a clean netfs page it might be able to discard (possibly the
one it's trying to write out).
(7) The netfs is called to throw the page away (nfs_release_page()) - but it's
called with __GFP_WAIT, so the netfs decides to wait for the store to
complete (__fscache_wait_on_page_write()).
(8) This blocks a slow-work processing thread - possibly against itself.
The system ends up stuck because it can't write out any netfs pages to the
cache without allocating more memory.
To avoid this, we make FS-Cache cancel some writes that aren't in the middle of
actually being performed. This means that some data won't make it into the
cache this time. To support this, a new FS-Cache function is added
fscache_maybe_release_page() that replaces what the netfs releasepage()
functions used to do with respect to the cache.
The decisions fscache_maybe_release_page() makes are counted and displayed
through /proc/fs/fscache/stats on a line labelled "VmScan". There are four
counters provided: "nos=N" - pages that weren't pending storage; "gon=N" -
pages that were pending storage when we first looked, but weren't by the time
we got the object lock; "bsy=N" - pages that we ignored as they were actively
being written when we looked; and "can=N" - pages that we cancelled the storage
of.
What I'd really like to do is alter the behaviour of the cancellation
heuristics, depending on how necessary it is to expel pages. If there are
plenty of other pages that aren't waiting to be written to the cache that
could be ejected first, then it would be nice to hold up on immediate
cancellation of cache writes - but I don't see a way of doing that.

The object state might also be OBJECT_DYING or OBJECT_WITHDRAWING.
This should be handled by simply rejecting the new operation with ENOBUFS.
There's no need to log an error for it. Events of this type now appear in the
stats file under Ops:rej.

FS-Cache has two structs internally for keeping track of the internal state of
a cached file: the fscache_cookie struct, which represents the netfs's state,
and fscache_object struct, which represents the cache's state. Each has a
pointer that points to the other (when both are in existence), and each has a
spinlock for pointer maintenance.
Since netfs operations approach these structures from the cookie side, they get
the cookie lock first, then the object lock. Cache operations, on the other
hand, approach from the object side, and get the object lock first. It is not
then permitted for a cache operation to get the cookie lock whilst it is
holding the object lock lest deadlock occur; instead, it must do one of two
things:
(1) increment the cookie usage counter, drop the object lock and then get both
locks in order, or
(2) simply hold the object lock as certain parts of the cookie may not be
altered whilst the object lock is held.
It is also not permitted to follow either pointer without holding the lock at
the end you start with. To break the pointers between the cookie and the
object, both locks must be held.
fscache_write_op(), however, violates the locking rules: It attempts to get the
cookie lock without (a) checking that the cookie pointer is a valid pointer,
and (b) holding the object lock to protect the cookie pointer whilst it follows
it. This is so that it can access the pending page store tree without
interference from __fscache_write_page().
This is fixed by splitting the cookie lock, such that the page store tracking
tree is protected by its own lock, and checking that the cookie pointer is
non-NULL before we attempt to follow it whilst holding the object lock.
The new lock is subordinate to both the cookie lock and the object lock, and so
should be taken after those.

Permit the operations to retrieve data from the cache or to allocate space in
the cache for future writes to be interrupted whilst they're waiting for
permission for the operation to proceed. Typically this wait occurs whilst the
cache object is being looked up on disk in the background.
If an interruption occurs, and the operation has not yet been given the
go-ahead to run, the operation is dequeued and cancelled, and control returns
to the read operation of the netfs routine with none of the requested pages
having been read or in any way marked as known by the cache.
This means that the initial wait is done interruptibly rather than
uninterruptibly.
In addition, extra stats values are made available to show the number of ops
cancelled and the number of cache space allocations interrupted.

Allow the current state of all fscache objects to be dumped by doing:
cat /proc/fs/fscache/objects
By default, all objects and all fields will be shown. This can be restricted
by adding a suitable key to one of the caller's keyrings (such as the session
keyring):
keyctl add user fscache:objlist "<restrictions>" @s
The <restrictions> are:
K Show hexdump of object key (don't show if not given)
A Show hexdump of object aux data (don't show if not given)
And paired restrictions:
C Show objects that have a cookie
c Show objects that don't have a cookie
B Show objects that are busy
b Show objects that aren't busy
W Show objects that have pending writes
w Show objects that don't have pending writes
R Show objects that have outstanding reads
r Show objects that don't have outstanding reads
S Show objects that have slow work queued
s Show objects that don't have slow work queued
If neither side of a restriction pair is given, then both are implied. For
example:
keyctl add user fscache:objlist KB @s
shows objects that are busy, and lists their object keys, but does not dump
their auxiliary data. It also implies "CcWwRrSs", but as 'B' is given, 'b' is
not implied.

Add a function to allow a requeueable work item to sleep till the thread
processing it is needed by the slow-work facility to perform other work.
Sometimes a work item can't progress immediately, but must wait for the
completion of another work item that's currently being processed by another
slow-work thread.
In some circumstances, the waiting item could instead - theoretically - put
itself back on the queue and yield its thread back to the slow-work facility,
thus waiting till it gets processing time again before attempting to progress.
This would allow other work items processing time on that thread.
However, this only works if there is something on the queue for it to queue
behind - otherwise it will just get a thread again immediately, and will end
up cycling between the queue and the thread, eating up valuable CPU time.
So, slow_work_sleep_till_thread_needed() is provided such that an item can put
itself on a wait queue that will wake it up when the event it is actually
interested in occurs, then call this function in lieu of calling schedule().
This function will then sleep until either the item's event occurs or another
work item appears on the queue. If another work item is queued, but the
item's event hasn't occurred, then the work item should requeue itself and
yield the thread back to the slow-work facility by returning.
This can be used by CacheFiles for an object that is being created on one
thread to wait for an object being deleted on another thread where there is
nothing on the queue for the creation to go and wait behind. As soon as an
item appears on the queue that could be given thread time instead, CacheFiles
can stick the creating object back on the queue and return to the slow-work
facility - assuming the object deletion didn't also complete.

Add a function (slow_work_is_queued()) to permit the owner of a work item to
determine if the item is queued or not.
The work item is counted as being queued if it is actually on the queue, not
just if it is pending. If it is executing and pending, then it is not on the
queue, but will rather be put back on the queue when execution finishes.
This permits a caller to quickly work out if it may be able to put another,
dependent work item on the queue behind it, or whether it will have to wait
till that is finished.
This can be used by CacheFiles to work out whether the creation a new object
can be immediately deferred when it has to wait for an old object to be
deleted, or whether a wait must take place. If a wait is necessary, then the
slow-work thread can otherwise get blocked, preventing the deletion from
taking place.

Add support for cancellation of queued slow work and delayed slow work items.
The cancellation functions will wait for items that are pending or undergoing
execution to be discarded by the slow work facility.
Attempting to enqueue work that is in the process of being cancelled will
result in ECANCELED.

The mute-LED isn't synchronized with the actual mute state on some
HP laptops with IDT 92HD83xxx codecs. A similar hack using
check_power_status callback is added for this codec, too.

This patch adds needed nodes and properties to support suspend/resume
on the MPC8610HPCD boards.
There is a dedicated switch (SW9) that is used to wake up the boards.
By default the SW9 button is routed to IRQ8, but could be re-routed
(via PIXIS) to sreset.
With 'no_console_suspend' kernel command line argument specified, the
board is also able to wakeup upon serial port input.

When the system has too many timers or too many aggregate
queued signals, the EAGAIN error is returned to application
from kernel, including timer_create() [POSIX.1b].
It means that the app exceeded the limit of pending signals,
but in general application writers do not expect this
outcome and the current silent failure can cause rare app
failures under very high load.
This patch adds a new message when we reach the limit
and if print_fatal_signals is enabled:
task/1234: reached RLIMIT_SIGPENDING, dropping signal
If you see this message and your system behaved unexpectedly,
you can run following command to lift the limit:
# ulimit -i unlimited

As a replacement to pcmcia_get_{first,next}_tuple() and
pcmcia_get_tuple_data(), three new -- and easier to use --
functions are added:
- pcmcia_get_tuple() to get the very first CIS entry of one
type.
- pcmcia_loop_tuple() to loop over all CIS entries of one type.
- pcmcia_get_mac_from_cis() to read out the hardware MAC address
from CISTPL_FUNCE.
Only a handful of drivers need these functions anyway, as most
CIS access is already handled by pcmcia_loop_config(), which
now shares the same backed (pccard_loop_tuple()) with
pcmcia_loop_tuple().
A pcmcia_get_mac_from_cis() bug noted by Komuro
<komurojun-mbn@nifty.com> has been fixed in this revision.

Values below 1000 milli-celsius don't make sense and can cause the
system to go into a thermal heart attack: the actual temperature
will always be lower and thus the system will be throttled down to
its lowest setting.
An additional problem is that values below 1000 will show as 0 in
/proc/acpi/thermal/TZx/trip_points:passive.

To avoid confusion in control names for the standard analog PC Beep generator
using a small Internal PC Speaker, rename all related "PC Speaker" and "PC
Beep" controls to "Beep" only. This name is more universal and can be also
used on more platforms without confusion.
Introduce also "Internal Speaker" in ControlNames.txt for systems with
full-featured build-in internal speaker.

Rename Kprobes-based event tracer to kprobes-based tracing event
(kprobe-event), since it is not a tracer but an extensible
tracing event interface.
This also changes CONFIG_KPROBE_TRACER to CONFIG_KPROBE_EVENT
and sets it y by default.

It can basically cause an ext4 filesystem to miss recovery (and thus get
mounted with errors) if the journal checksum does not match.
Quoth Eric:
"My hand-wavy hunch about what is happening is that we're finding a
bad checksum on the last partially-written transaction, which is
not surprising, but if we have a wrapped log and we're doing the
initial scan for head/tail, and we abort scanning on that bad
checksum, then we are essentially running an unrecovered filesystem.
But that's hand-wavy and I need to go look at the code.
We lived without journal checksums on by default until now, and at
this point they're doing more harm than good, so we should revert
the default-changing commit until we can fix it and do some good
power-fail testing with the fixes in place."

Currently, if the high-res timers are unavailable, snd-pcsp does not
initialize. People who choose it over pcspkr, loose their console beeps
in that case and get annoyed.
With this patch, the console beeps remain regardless of the high-res
timers. Additionally, the "nopcm" modparam is added to forcibly
disable the PCM capabilities of the driver.

CPU time of a guest is always accounted in 'user' time
without concern for the nice value of its counterpart
process although the guest is scheduled under the nice
value.
This patch fixes the defect and accounts cpu time of
a niced guest in 'nice' time as same as a niced process.
And also the patch adds 'guest_nice' to cpuacct. The
value provides niced guest cpu time which is like 'nice'
to 'user'.

virtio: add virtio IDs file
moved all device IDs into a single file. While the change itself is
a very good one, it can break userspace applications. For example
if a userspace tool wanted to get the ID of virtio_net it used to
include virtio_net.h. This does no longer work, since virtio_net.h
does not include virtio_ids.h.
This patch moves all "#include <linux/virtio_ids.h>" from the C
files into the header files, making the header files compatible with
the old ones.
In addition, this patch exports virtio_ids.h to userspace.

When collecting slub stats for particular workloads, it's necessary to
collect each statistic for all caches before the job is even started
because the counters are usually greater than zero just from boot and
initialization.
This allows a statistic to be cleared on each cpu by writing '0' to its
sysfs file. This creates a baseline for statistics of interest before
the workload is started.
Setting a statistic to a particular value is not supported, so all values
written to these files other than '0' returns -EINVAL.

On FSC laptops, the sound gets muted gradually when the volume is chnaged.
This is due to the wrong volume-knob widget setup. The delta bit (bit 7)
shouldn't be set for these devices.
This patch adds a new quirk to set the value 0x7f to the widget 0x24
instead of 0xff.

Add $ prefix to the special variables(e.g. sa, rv) of kprobe-tracer.
This resolves consistency issues between kprobe_events and perf-kprobe.
The main goal is to avoid conflicts between local variable names of
probed functions, used by perf probe, and special variables used
in the kprobe event creation interface (stack values, etc...) and
also available from perf probe.
ie: we don't want rv (return value) to conflict with a local variable
named rv in a probed function.

Update documentation of cgroups tasks and procs files
Document the cgroup.procs file.
Clarify the semantics of the cgroup.procs and tasks files. Although the
current cgroup.procs interface returns a sorted and uniqified list of
pids, potential future performance enhancements could result in those
properties being removed - explicitly document this aspect of the API.
There are no existing users of cgroup.procs, so compatibility isn't an
issue. There are users of the "tasks" file, but none that would appear to
break in the event of the sorted property being broken. The standard
"libcpuset" explicitly sorts the results of reading from the tasks file,
and "libcg" and other users don't appear to care about ordering.

Adjust the max_kernel_pages default to a quarter of totalram_pages,
instead of nr_free_buffer_pages() / 4: the KSM pages themselves come from
highmem, and even on a 16GB PAE machine, 4GB of KSM pages would only be
pinning 32MB of lowmem with their rmap_items, so no need for the more
obscure calculation (nor for its own special init function).
There is no way for the user to switch KSM on if CONFIG_SYSFS is not
enabled, so in that case default run to KSM_RUN_MERGE.
Update KSM Documentation and Kconfig to reflect the new defaults.

UDP_HTABLE_SIZE was initialy defined to 128, which is a bit small for
several setups.
4000 active UDP sockets -> 32 sockets per chain in average. An
incoming frame has to lookup all sockets to find best match, so long
chains hurt latency.
Instead of a fixed size hash table that cant be perfect for every
needs, let UDP stack choose its table size at boot time like tcp/ip
route, using alloc_large_system_hash() helper
Add an optional boot parameter, uhash_entries=x so that an admin can
force a size between 256 and 65536 if needed, like thash_entries and
rhash_entries.
dmesg logs two new lines :
[ 0.647039] UDP hash table entries: 512 (order: 0, 4096 bytes)
[ 0.647099] UDP Lite hash table entries: 512 (order: 0, 4096 bytes)
Maximal size on 64bit arches would be 65536 slots, ie 1 MBytes for non
debugging spinlocks.

I've rewritten the extract-ikconfig script to extract the kernel
configuration from a kernel compiled with CONFIG_IKCONFIG. The main
motivation for the rewrite was to remove the dependency on the
external C program binoffset.c, which is compiled on the initial run.
The binoffset executable is invoked with a relative path, which means
that the old script can only be run from the top of the kernel tree,
and only when you have write permission in the scripts directory.
The new script uses tr/grep/tail/zcat only, and can be invoked from
anywhere. The binoffset.c program has been removed. This script
requires GNU grep 2.5 (released 2002-03-13) or higher, because the -o
option was introduced in that version.

Neighbor advertisements responding to unicast neighbor solicitations
did not include the target link-layer address option. This patch adds
a new sysctl option (disabled by default) which controls whether this
option should be sent even with unicast NAs.
The need for this arose because certain routers expect the TLLAO in
some situations even as a response to unicast NS packets.
Moreover, RFC 2461 recommends sending this to avoid a race condition
(section 4.4, Target link-layer address)

In some cases there is not desirable to switch back to primary interface when
it's link recovers and rather stay with currently active one. We need to avoid
packetloss as much as we can in some cases. This is solved by introducing
primary_reselect option. Note that enslaved primary slave is set as current
active no matter what.

after change of option setting via sysfs, revised the documentation
update, and bumped the bonding version number.

Old Soundscape cards (pre PnP) work only with AD1848 codecs.
If the CS4231 codec is installed it must be used in AD1848
compatible mode.

It is not currently possible to instruct pktgen to use one selected tx queue.
When Robert added multiqueue support in commit 45b270f8, he added
an interval (queue_map_min, queue_map_max), and his code doesnt take
into account the case of min = max, to select one tx queue exactly.
I suspect a high performance setup on a eight txqueue device wants
to use exactly eight cpus, and assign one tx queue to each sender.
This patchs makes pktgen select the right tx queue, not the first one.
Also updates Documentation to reflect Robert changes.

There is no point in implementing a detect callback for the LTC4215
and LTC4245, as these devices can't be detected. It was there solely
to handle "force" module parameters to instantiate devices, but now
we have a better sysfs interface that can do the same.
So we can get rid of the ugly module parameters and the detect
callbacks. This shrinks the binary module sizes by 36% and 46%,
respectively.

There is no point in implementing a detect callback for the DS2482, as
this device can't be detected. It was there solely to handle "force"
module parameters to instantiate devices, but now we have a better sysfs
interface that can do the same.
So we can get rid of the ugly module parameters and the detect callback.
This shrinks the binary module size by 21%.

Commit c953094 ("early_printk: Allow more than one early console")
introduced a regression in the parsing of the earlyprintk= kernel
arguments.
If you specify "earlyprintk=serial,ttyS0,115200" as a kernel
argument, the "serial,ttyS" should be parsed as a single argument
and not as "serial" and then "ttyS".
Also update the documentation to reflect you can specify the ttyS
directly without the "serial" argument.

The conversion solves the problem that firmware size was set to 64KB
while non PnP cards have 128KB firmware files.
An additional firmware initialization code has been moved from the OSS
driver.

The /proc/fs/ext4/<dev>/mb_history was maintained manually, and had a
number of problems: it required a largish amount of memory to be
allocated for each ext4 filesystem, and the s_mb_history_lock
introduced a CPU contention problem.
By ripping out the mb_history code and replacing it with ftrace
tracepoints, and we get more functionality: timestamps, event
filtering, the ability to correlate mballoc history with other ext4
tracepoints, etc.

ca_maxresponsesize and ca_maxrequest size include the RPC header.
sv_max_mesg is sv_max_payolad plus a page for overhead and is used in
svc_init_buffer to allocate server buffer space for both the request and reply.
Note that this means we can service an RPC compound that requires
ca_maxrequestsize (MAXWRITE) or ca_max_responsesize (MAXREAD) but that we do
not support an RPC compound that requires both ca_maxrequestsize and
ca_maxresponsesize.

Introduce core pipe limiting sysctl.
Since we can dump cores to pipe, rather than directly to the filesystem,
we create a condition in which a user can create a very high load on the
system simply by running bad applications.
If the pipe reader specified in core_pattern is poorly written, we can
have lots of ourstandig resources and processes in the system.
This sysctl introduces an ability to limit that resource consumption.
core_pipe_limit defines how many in-flight dumps may be run in parallel,
dumps beyond this value are skipped and a note is made in the kernel log.
A special value of 0 in core_pipe_limit denotes unlimited core dumps may
be handled (this is the default value).

Soft limits is a new feature for the memory resource controller, something
similar has existed in the group scheduler in the form of shares. The CPU
controllers interpretation of shares is very different though.
Soft limits are the most useful feature to have for environments where the
administrator wants to overcommit the system, such that only on memory
contention do the limits become active. The current soft limits
implementation provides a soft_limit_in_bytes interface for the memory
controller and not for memory+swap controller. The implementation
maintains an RB-Tree of groups that exceed their soft limit and starts
reclaiming from the group that exceeds this limit by the maximum amount.

Change the memory cgroup to remove the overhead associated with accounting
all pages in the root cgroup. As a side-effect, we can no longer set a
memory hard limit in the root cgroup.
A new flag to track whether the page has been accounted or not has been
added as well. Flags are now set atomically for page_cgroup,
pcg_default_flags is now obsolete and removed.

Alter the ss->can_attach and ss->attach functions to be able to deal with
a whole threadgroup at a time, for use in cgroup_attach_proc. (This is a
pre-patch to cgroup-procs-writable.patch.)
Currently, new mode of the attach function can only tell the subsystem
about the old cgroup of the threadgroup leader. No subsystem currently
needs that information for each thread that's being moved, but if one were
to be added (for example, one that counts tasks within a group) this bit
would need to be reworked a bit to tell the subsystem the right
information.

To simplify referring to cgroup hierarchies in mount statements, and to
allow disambiguation in the presence of empty hierarchies and
multiply-bindable subsystems this patch adds support for naming a new
cgroup hierarchy via the "name=" mount option
A pre-existing hierarchy may be specified by either name or by subsystems;
a hierarchy's name cannot be changed by a remount operation.
Example usage:
# To create a hierarchy called "foo" containing the "cpu" subsystem
mount -t cgroup -oname=foo,cpu cgroup /mnt/cgroup1
# To mount the "foo" hierarchy on a second location
mount -t cgroup -oname=foo cgroup /mnt/cgroup2

Introduce "-p|--pid <pid>" for walking the process address space. The
default action is to walk raw memory PFNs.
Both the virtual address and physical address of each present pages will
be listed:

I would like to get rid of option CONFIG_FB_MATROX_MULTIHEAD and just
always enable it. There are many reasons for doing this:
* CONFIG_FB_MATROX_MULTIHEAD=y is what all x86 distributions do, so it
definitely works or we would know by now.
* Building the matroxfb driver with CONFIG_FB_MATROX_MULTIHEAD not set
results in the following build warning:

This is nothing to be worried about, the driver will work fine, but build
warnings are still annoying.
* The trick to get multihead support without CONFIG_FB_MATROX_MULTIHEAD,
which is described in the config help text, no longer works: you can't
load the same kernel module more than once.
* I fail to see how CONFIG_FB_MATROX_MULTIHEAD=y would make the code
significantly slower, contrary to what the help text says. A few extra
parameters on the stack here and there can't really slow things down in
comaprison to the rest of the code, and register access.
* The driver built without CONFIG_FB_MATROX_MULTIHEAD is larger than the
driver build with CONFIG_FB_MATROX_MULTIHEAD=y by 8%.
* One less configuration option makes things simpler. We add options
all the time, being able to remove one for once is nice. It improves
testing coverage. And I don't think the Matrox adapters are still
popular enough to warrant overdetailed configuration settings.
* We should be able to unobfuscate the driver code quite a bit after
this change (patches follow.)

Many gpio chips allow to generate interrupts when the value of a pin
changes. This patch gives usermode application the opportunity to make
use of this feature by calling poll(2) on the /sys/class/gpio/gpioN/value
sysfs file. The edge to trigger can be set in the edge file in the same
directory. Possible values are "none", "rising", "falling", and "both".
Using level triggers is not possible with current sysfs since nothing
changes the GPIO value (and the IRQ keeps triggering). Edge triggering
will "just work". Note that if there was an event between read() and
poll(), the poll() returns immediately.
Also note that this version only supports true GPIO interrupts. Some
later patch might be able to synthesize this behavior by timer-driven
polling; some systems seem to need that.

Commit 926b663ce8 (gpiolib: allow GPIOs to
be named) already provides naming on the chip level. This patch provides
more flexibility by allowing multiple names where ever in sysfs on a per
GPIO basis.

CONFIG_RTC_HCTOSYS allows the kernel to read the system time from the RTC
at boot and resume, avoiding the need for userspace to do so.
Unfortunately userspace currently has no way to know whether this
configuration option is enabled and thus cannot sensibly choose whether to
run hwclock itself or not. Add a hctosys sysfs attribute which indicates
whether a given RTC set the system clock.

A patch to give a better overview of the userland application stack usage,
especially for embedded linux.
Currently you are only able to dump the main process/thread stack usage
which is showed in /proc/pid/status by the "VmStk" Value. But you get no
information about the consumed stack memory of the the threads.
There is an enhancement in the /proc/<pid>/{task/*,}/*maps and which marks
the vm mapping where the thread stack pointer reside with "[thread stack
xxxxxxxx]". xxxxxxxx is the maximum size of stack. This is a value
information, because libpthread doesn't set the start of the stack to the
top of the mapped area, depending of the pthread usage.

When syslog is not possible, at the same time there's no serial/net
console available, it will be hard to read the printk messages. For
example oops/panic/warning messages in shutdown phase.
Add a printk delay feature, we can make each printk message delay some
milliseconds.
Setting the delay by proc/sysctl interface: /proc/sys/kernel/printk_delay
The value range from 0 - 10000, default value is 0

VIRTIO_F_NOTIFY_ON_EMPTY indicates to the Guest that we will hit them with
an interrupt every time the xmit queue is emptied.
Because it results in lots of tx interrupts, modern Guests probably don't
want it, so let's only force it when they accept the option.

Virtio IDs are spread all over the tree which makes assigning new IDs
bothersome. Putting them together should make the process less error-prone.

But now, numastat explains it oppositely about (MISS, FOREIGN).
Let's fix up with viewpoint of zone.

oom-killer kills a process, not task. Then oom_score should be calculated
as per-process too. it makes consistency more and makes speed up
select_bad_process().

The documentation for ftrace, events and tracepoints is pretty extensive.
Similarly, the perf PCL tools help files --help are there and the code
simple enough to figure out what much of the switches mean. However,
pulling the discrete bits and pieces together and translating that into
"how do I solve a problem" requires a fair amount of imagination.

This patch adds a simple post-processing script for the
page-allocator-related trace events. It can be used to give an indication
of who the most allocator-intensive processes are and how often the zone
lock was taken during the tracing period. Example output looks like

This says that Xorg allocated 3796 pages and it's parent process is gdm
with a PID of 3756;
The postprocessor parses the text output of tracing. While there is a
binary format, the expectation is that the binary output can be readily
translated into text and post-processed offline. Obviously if the text
format changes, the parser will break but the regular expression parser is
fairly rudimentary so should be readily adjustable.

The patch makes the clear_refs more versatile in adding the option to
select anonymous pages or file backed pages for clearing. This addition
has a measurable impact on user space application performance as it
decreases the number of pagewalks in scenarios where one is only
interested in a specific type of page (anonymous or file mapped).
The patch adds anonymous and file backed filters to the clear_refs interface.
echo 1 > /proc/PID/clear_refs resets the bits on all pages
echo 2 > /proc/PID/clear_refs resets the bits on anonymous pages only
echo 3 > /proc/PID/clear_refs resets the bits on file backed pages only

Improve the example code to be at least useable, as in not causing
harm (as shown below). Code can still be improved further, but this
adds some basic safeguards.
1. hpfall *MUST* mlockall(MCL_CURRENT|MCL_FUTURE); itself!
Since the Program sits and waits most of the time it becomes very likely
swapped out. If it gets woken up when the laptop drops from the table
while it is swapped out it actually triggers harddrive activity!
2. Daemonize hpfall using 'daemon(0,0)' (quick and dirty).
3. Give hpfall realtime priority.
Should give a chance that it has less latency when woken up.

The documentation for /proc/sys/kernel/* does not mention the possible
value 2 for randomize-va-space yet. While being there, doing some
reformatting, fixing grammar problems and clarifying the correlations
between randomize-va-space, kernel parameter "norandmaps" and the
CONFIG_COMPAT_BRK option.

Update the HKEY event driver to:
1. Handle better the second-gen firmware, which has no HKEY mask
support but does report FN+F3, FN+F4 and FN+F12 without the need
for NVRAM polling.
a) always make the mask-related attributes available in sysfs;
b) use DMI quirks to detect the second-gen firmware;
c) properly report that FN+F3, FN+F4 and FN+F12 are enabled,
and available even on mask-less second-gen firmware;
2. Decouple the issuing of hotkey events towards userspace from
their reception from the firmware. ALSA mixer and brightness
event reporting support will need this feature.
3. Clean up the mess in the hotkey driver a great deal. It is
still very convoluted, and wants a full refactoring into a
proper event API interface, but that is not going to happen
today.
4. Fully reset firmware interface on resume (restore hotkey
mask and status).
5. Stop losing polled events for no good reason when changing the
mask and poll frequencies. We will still lose them when the
hotkey_source_mask is changed, as well as any that happened
between driver suspend and driver resume.
The hotkey subdriver now has the notion of user-space-visible hotkey
event mask, as well as of the set of "hotkey" events the driver needs
(because brightness/volume change reports are not just keypress
reports in most ThinkPad models).
With this rewrite, the ABI level is bumped to 0x020500 should
userspace need to know it is dealing with the updated hotkey
subdriver.

HKEY event 0x5010 is useless to us: old ThinkPads don't issue it. Newer
ThinkPads won't issue it anymore. And all ThinkPads issue 0x1010 and
0x1011 events.
Just silently drop it instead of sending it to userspace.

Replace the use of CROSS_COMPILE to select a customized
installkernel script with the possibility to set INSTALLKERNEL
to select a custom installkernel script when running make:
make INSTALLKERNEL=arm-installkernel install
With this patch we are now more consistent across
different architectures - they did not all support use
of CROSS_COMPILE.
The use of CROSS_COMPILE was a hack as this really belongs
to gcc/binutils and the installkernel script does not change
just because we change toolchain.
The use of CROSS_COMPILE caused troubles with an upcoming patch
that saves CROSS_COMPILE when a kernel is built - it would no
longer be installable.

Use physmap_of to access RAMs as mtd and add documenation for it. This approach
is a lot less intrusive as adding an of-wrapper around plat-ram.c. As most
extensions of plat-ram.c (e.g. custom map-functions) can't be mapped to the
device tree anyhow, extending physmap_of seems to be the cleanest approach.
Tested with a phyCORE-MPC5121e.

Just make it depend on BROKEN for now, in case people scream really loud

This patch converts the existing power tracer into an event tracer,
so that power events (C states and frequency changes) can be
tracked via "perf".
This also removes the perl script that was used to demo the tracer;
its functionality is being replaced entirely with timechart.

This driver exposes ACPI 4.0 compliant power meters as hardware monitoring
devices. This second revision of the driver also exports the ACPI string
info as sysfs attributes, a list of the devices that the meter measures,
and will send ACPI notifications over the ACPI netlink socket. This
latest revision only enables the power capping controls if it can be
confirmed that the power cap can be enforced by the hardware and explains
how the notification interfaces work.

echo "reset" > /proc/acpi/ibm/hotkey should do something non-useless,
so instead of setting it to Fn+F2, Fn+F3, Fn+F5, set it to
hotkey_recommended_mask.
It is not like it will survive for much longer, anyway.

Some analysis of the ACPI DSDTs shows that the HKEY pre-enabled mask
is always 0x80c (FN+F3,FN+F4 and FN+F12), which are the hotkeys that
the second gen of HKEY firmware supported (the first gen didn't report
any hotkeys, the second reported these tree hotkeys but had no mask
support, and the third added mask support).
So, this is probably some sort of backwards compatibility with older
versions of the IBM ThinkVantage suite. We have no use for that, and
I know of exactly ZERO users of that attribute, anyway. Start the
process of getting rid of it.

test status analog (PAL-B):
- Sometimes picture is noisy, but it becomes crystal clear after
switching between channels. (happens for example at 687.25 Mhz)
- On a lower frequency (511.25 Mhz) the picture is always sharp, but
lacks colour.
- No sound problems.
- radio untested.
Digital:
- DVB-T/H stream reception works.
- Would expect to see some more channels in the higher frequency region.
Overall is the impression that sensitivity still needs improvement
both in analog and digital modes.

The term 'kernel number' is very vague, so replace it with the somewhat more
descriptive term 'device node number'.
In one place the local variable 'nr' was used to create the device node number
of the new device name. This has been replaced with the vdev->num field to
more clearly mark this as being the device node number and not the minor
number.

video_register_device_index is never actually called, instead the
stream index number is always calculated automatically.
This patch removes this function and simplifies the internal get_index
function since that can now always just return the first free index.

Rewrite v4l2_i2c_new_subdev as a simplified version of v4l2_i2c_new_subdev_cfg
and remove v4l2_i2c_new_probed_subdev and v4l2_i2c_new_probed_subdev_addr.
This simplifies this API substantially.

The initial soc-camera scaling and cropping implementation turned out to be
incompliant with the V4L2 API, e.g., it expected the user to specify cropping
in output window pixels, instead of input window pixels. This patch converts
the soc-camera core and all drivers to comply with the standard.

This patch adds support for all of the known shipping Hauppauge HVR-2200
and HVR-2250 boards. Digital TV ATSC/QAM and DVB-T is enabled at this
time. Both tuners are supported.
Volatiles and typedefs need rework, the rest is coding style compliant.

By default, when a callout is used, DocBook will try to use
a graphics image for callouts. This requires that the graphics
to be copied to the documentation directory. As this is not
done, use the text callouts: (1), (2), ...

DocBook makefile expects that the documents to be in tmpl extension,
since it has some preprocessing that it is done on it. This preprocessing
is not needed currently, but, as it removes the xml versions, we're
forced to rename anyway.

The difference between some loongson-based machines is very small, so, if
there is no necessary to add new kernel config options to cope with this
difference, it will be better to share the same kernel image file between
them, benefit from this, the linux distribution developers only have a need
to compile the kernel one time.
This machtype kernel command line argument will be used later to share the
same kernel image file between two different machines(menglong & yeeloong)
made by lemote.
