Linus Torvalds 4fef611590 alpha: enable GENERIC_PCI_IOMAP unconditionally
With the previous commit (9caea0007601: "parisc: Declare pci_iounmap()
parisc version only when CONFIG_PCI enabled") we can now enable
GENERIC_PCI_IOMAP unconditionally on alpha, and if PCI is not enabled we
will just get the nice empty helper functions that allow mixed-bus
drivers to build.

Example driver: the old 3com/3c59x.c driver works with either the PCI or
the EISA version of the 3x59x card, but wouldn't build in an EISA-only
configuration because of missing pci_iomap() and pci_iounmap() dummy
wrappers.

Most of the other PCI infrastructure just becomes empty wrappers even
without GENERIC_PCI_IOMAP, and it's not obvious that the pci_iomap
functionality shouldn't do the same, but this works.

Linus Torvalds ab41f75ee6 alpha: mark 'Jensen' platform as no longer broken
Ok, it almost certainly is still broken on actual hardware, but the
immediate reason for it having been marked BROKEN was a build error that
is fixed by just making sure the low-level IO header file is included
sufficiently early that the __EXTERN_INLINE hackery takes effect.

This was marked broken back in 2017 by commit 1883c9f49d ("alpha: mark
jensen as broken"), but Ulrich Teichert made me look at it as part of my
cross-build work to make sure -Werror actually does the right thing.

There are lots of alpha configurations that do not build cleanly, but
now it's no longer because Jensen wouldn't be buildable. That said,
because the Jensen platform doesn't force PCI to be enabled (Jensen only
had EISA), it ends up being somewhat interesting as a source of odd
configs.

Linus Torvalds 4cdc4cc2ad asm-generic changes for 5.15
The main content for 5.15 is a series that cleans up the handling of
 strncpy_from_user() and strnlen_user(), removing a lot of slightly
 incorrect versions of these in favor of the lib/strn*.c helpers
 that implement these correctly and more efficiently.

 The only architectures that retain a private version now are
 mips, ia64, um and parisc. I had offered to convert those at all,
 but Thomas Bogendoerfer wanted to keep the mips version for the
 moment until he had a chance to do regression testing.

 The branch also contains two patches for bitops and for ffs().

Lukas Bulwahn 094121ef81 arch: Kconfig: clean up obsolete use of HAVE_IDE
The arch-specific Kconfig files use HAVE_IDE to indicate if IDE is
supported.

As IDE support and the HAVE_IDE config vanishes with commit b7fb14d3ac
("ide: remove the legacy ide driver"), there is no need to mention
HAVE_IDE in all those arch-specific Kconfig files.

The issue was identified with ./scripts/checkkconfigsymbols.py.

Arnd Bergmann e6226997ec asm-generic: reverse GENERIC_{STRNCPY_FROM,STRNLEN}_USER symbols
Most architectures do not need a custom implementation, and in most
cases the generic implementation is preferred, so change the polariy
on these Kconfig symbols to require architectures to select them when
they provide their own version.

The new name is CONFIG_ARCH_HAS_{STRNCPY_FROM,STRNLEN}_USER.

The remaining architectures at the moment are: ia64, mips, parisc,
um and xtensa. We should probably convert these as well, but
I was not sure how far to take this series. Thomas Bogendoerfer
had some concerns about converting mips but may still do some
more detailed measurements to see which version is better.

Mike Rapoport fdb7d9b7ac alpha: remove DISCONTIGMEM and NUMA
Patch series "Remove DISCONTIGMEM memory model", v3.

SPARSEMEM memory model was supposed to entirely replace DISCONTIGMEM a
(long) while ago. The last architectures that used DISCONTIGMEM were
updated to use other memory models in v5.11 and it is about the time to
entirely remove DISCONTIGMEM from the kernel.

This set removes DISCONTIGMEM from alpha, arc and m68k, simplifies memory
model selection in mm/Kconfig and replaces usage of redundant
CONFIG_NEED_MULTIPLE_NODES and CONFIG_FLAT_NODE_MEM_MAP with CONFIG_NUMA
and CONFIG_FLATMEM respectively.

I've also removed NUMA support on alpha that was BROKEN for more than 15
years.

There were also minor updates all over arch/ to remove mentions of
DISCONTIGMEM in comments and #ifdefs.

This patch (of 9):

NUMA is marked broken on alpha for more than 15 years and DISCONTIGMEM was
replaced with SPARSEMEM in v5.11.

Remove both NUMA and DISCONTIGMEM support from alpha.

Heiko Carstens 96c0a6a72d s390,alpha: switch to 64-bit ino_t
s390 and alpha are the only 64 bit architectures with a 32-bit ino_t.
Since this is quite unusual this causes bugs from time to time.

See e.g. commit ebce3eb2f7 ("ceph: fix inode number handling on
arches with 32-bit ino_t") for an example.

This (obviously) also prevents s390 and alpha to use 64-bit ino_t for
tmpfs. See commit b85a7a8bb5 ("tmpfs: disallow CONFIG_TMPFS_INODE64
on s390").

Therefore switch both s390 and alpha to 64-bit ino_t. This should only
have an effect on the ustat system call. To prevent ABI breakage
define struct ustat compatible to the old layout and change
sys_ustat() accordingly.

Linus Torvalds 7a932e5702 asm-generic: cross-architecture timer cleanup
This cleans up two ancient timer features that were never completed in
 the past, CONFIG_GENERIC_CLOCKEVENTS and CONFIG_ARCH_USES_GETTIMEOFFSET.

 There was only one user left for the ARCH_USES_GETTIMEOFFSET variant
 of clocksource implementations, the ARM EBSA110 platform. Rather than
 changing to use modern timekeeping, we remove the platform entirely as
 Russell no longer uses his machine and nobody else seems to have one
 any more.

 The conditional code for using arch_gettimeoffset() is removed as
 a result.

 For CONFIG_GENERIC_CLOCKEVENTS, there are still a couple of platforms
 not using clockevent drivers: parisc, ia64, most of m68k, and one
 Arm platform. These all do timer ticks slighly differently, and this
 gets cleaned up to the point they at least all call the same helper
 function. Instead of most platforms using 'select GENERIC_CLOCKEVENTS'
 in Kconfig, the polarity is now reversed, with the few remaining ones
 selecting LEGACY_TIMER_TICK instead.

Mike Rapoport 36d40290c8 alpha: switch from DISCONTIGMEM to SPARSEMEM
Patch series "arch, mm: deprecate DISCONTIGMEM", v2.

It's been a while since DISCONTIGMEM is generally considered deprecated,
but it is still used by four architectures. This set replaces
DISCONTIGMEM with a different way to handle holes in the memory map and
marks DISCONTIGMEM configuration as BROKEN in Kconfigs of these
architectures with the intention to completely remove it in several
releases.

While for 64-bit alpha and ia64 the switch to SPARSEMEM is quite obvious
and was a matter of moving some bits around, for smaller 32-bit arc and
m68k SPARSEMEM is not necessarily the best thing to do.

On 32-bit machines SPARSEMEM would require large sections to make section
index fit in the page flags, but larger sections mean that more memory is
wasted for unused memory map.

Besides, pfn_to_page() and page_to_pfn() become less efficient, at least
on arc.

So I've decided to generalize arm's approach for freeing of unused parts
of the memory map with FLATMEM and enable it for both arc and m68k. The
details are in the description of patches 10 (arc) and 13 (m68k).

This patch (of 13):

Enable SPARSEMEM support on alpha and deprecate DISCONTIGMEM.

The required changes are mostly around moving duplicated definitions of
page access and address conversion macros to a common place and making sure
they are available for all memory models.

The DISCONTINGMEM support is marked as BROKEN an will be removed in a
couple of releases.

Arnd Bergmann 0774a6ed29 timekeeping: default GENERIC_CLOCKEVENTS to enabled
Almost all machines use GENERIC_CLOCKEVENTS, so it feels wrong to
require each one to select that symbol manually.

Instead, enable it whenever CONFIG_LEGACY_TIMER_TICK is disabled as
a simplification. It should be possible to select both
GENERIC_CLOCKEVENTS and LEGACY_TIMER_TICK from an architecture now
and decide at runtime between the two.

For the clockevents arch-support.txt file, this means that additional
architectures are marked as TODO when they have at least one machine
that still uses LEGACY_TIMER_TICK, rather than being marked 'ok' when
at least one machine has been converted. This means that both m68k and
arm (for riscpc) revert to TODO.

At this point, we could just always enable CONFIG_GENERIC_CLOCKEVENTS
rather than leaving it off when not needed. I built an m68k
defconfig kernel (using gcc-10.1.0) and found that this would add
around 5.5KB in kernel image size:

   text data bss dec hex	filename
3861936	1092236	 196656	5150828	 4e986c	obj-m68k/vmlinux-no-clockevent
3866201	1093832	 196184	5156217	 4ead79	obj-m68k/vmlinux-clockevent

On Arm (MACH_RPC), that difference appears to be twice as large,
around 11KB on top of an 6MB vmlinux.

Masahiro Yamada a7f7f6248d treewide: replace '---help---' in Kconfig files with 'help'
Since commit 84af7a6194 ("checkpatch: kconfig: prefer 'help' over
'---help---'"), the number of '---help---' has been gradually
decreasing, but there are still more than 2400 instances.

This commit finishes the conversion. While I touched the lines,
I also fixed the indentation.

There are a variety of indentation styles found.

  a) 4 spaces + '---help---'
  b) 7 spaces + '---help---'
  c) 8 spaces + '---help---'
  d) 1 space + 1 tab + '---help---'
  e) 1 tab + '---help---'    (correct indentation)
  f) 1 tab + 1 space + '---help---'
  g) 1 tab + 2 spaces + '---help---'

In order to convert all of them to 1 tab + 'help', I ran the
following commend:

  $ find . -name 'Kconfig*' | xargs sed -i 's/^[[:space:]]*---help---/\thelp/'

Waiman Long 390a0c62c2 locking/rwsem: Remove rwsem-spinlock.c & use rwsem-xadd.c for all archs
Currently, we have two different implementation of rwsem:

 1) CONFIG_RWSEM_GENERIC_SPINLOCK (rwsem-spinlock.c)
 2) CONFIG_RWSEM_XCHGADD_ALGORITHM (rwsem-xadd.c)

As we are going to use a single generic implementation for rwsem-xadd.c
and no architecture-specific code will be needed, there is no point
in keeping two different implementations of rwsem. In most cases, the
performance of rwsem-spinlock.c will be worse. It also doesn't get all
the performance tuning and optimizations that had been implemented in
rwsem-xadd.c over the years.

For simplication, we are going to remove rwsem-spinlock.c and make all
architectures use a single implementation of rwsem - rwsem-xadd.c.

All references to RWSEM_GENERIC_SPINLOCK and RWSEM_XCHGADD_ALGORITHM
in the code are removed.

Peter Zijlstra 6137fed082 arch/tlb: Clean up simple architectures
For the architectures that do not implement their own tlb_flush() but
do already use the generic mmu_gather, there are two options:

 1) the platform has an efficient flush_tlb_range() and
    asm-generic/tlb.h doesn't need any overrides at all.

 2) the platform lacks an efficient flush_tlb_range() and
    we select MMU_GATHER_NO_RANGE to minimize full invalidates.

Convert all 'simple' architectures to one of these two forms.

alpha: has no range invalidate -> 2
arc:	    already used flush_tlb_range() -> 1
c6x:	    has no range invalidate -> 2
hexagon:    has an efficient flush_tlb_range() -> 1
            (flush_tlb_mm() is in fact a full range invalidate,
	     so no need to shoot down everything)
m68k:	    has inefficient flush_tlb_range() -> 2
microblaze: has no flush_tlb_range() -> 2
mips:	    has efficient flush_tlb_range() -> 1
	    (even though it currently seems to use flush_tlb_mm())
nds32:	    already uses flush_tlb_range() -> 1
nios2:	    has inefficient flush_tlb_range() -> 2
	    (no limit on range iteration)
openrisc:   has inefficient flush_tlb_range() -> 2
	    (no limit on range iteration)
parisc:	    already uses flush_tlb_range() -> 1
sparc32:    already uses flush_tlb_range() -> 1
unicore32:  has inefficient flush_tlb_range() -> 2
	    (no limit on range iteration)
xtensa:	    has efficient flush_tlb_range() -> 1

Note this also fixes a bug in the existing code for a number
platforms. Those platforms that did:

  tlb_end_vma() -> if (!full_mm) flush_tlb_*()
  tlb_flush -> if (full_mm) flush_tlb_mm()

missed the case of shift_arg_pages(), which doesn't have @fullmm set,
nor calls into tlb_*vma(), but still frees page-tables and thus needs
an invalidate. The new code handles this by detecting a non-empty
range, and either issuing the matching range invalidate or a full
invalidate, depending on the capabilities.

No change in behavior intended.

Move the definitions to drivers/pci and let the architectures select
them. Two small differences to before: PCI_DOMAINS_GENERIC now selects
PCI_DOMAINS, cutting down the churn for modern architectures. As the
only architectured arm did previously also offer PCI_DOMAINS as a user
visible choice in addition to selecting it from the relevant configs,
this is gone now.

Mike Rapoport 6471f52af7 alpha: switch to NO_BOOTMEM
Replace bootmem allocator with memblock and enable use of NO_BOOTMEM like
on most other architectures.

Alpha gets the description of the physical memory from the firmware as an
array of memory clusters. Each cluster that is not reserved by the
firmware is added to memblock.memory.

Once the memblock.memory is set up, we reserve the kernel and initrd pages
with memblock reserve.

Since we don't need the bootmem bitmap anymore, the code that finds an
appropriate place is removed.

The conversion does not take care of NUMA support which is marked broken
for more than 10 years now.

Sebastian Andrzej Siewior f2ae679411 alpha: Remove custom dec_and_lock() implementation
Alpha provides a custom implementation of dec_and_lock(). The functions
is split into two parts:
- atomic_add_unless() + return 0 (fast path in assembly)
- remaining part including locking (slow path in C)

Comparing the result of the alpha implementation with the generic
implementation compiled by gcc it looks like the fast path is optimized
by avoiding a stack frame (and reloading the GP), register store and all
this. This is only done in the slowpath.
After marking the slowpath (atomic_dec_and_lock_1()) as "noinline" and
doing the slowpath in C (the atomic_add_unless(atomic, -1, 1) part) I
noticed differences in the resulting assembly:
- the GP is still reloaded
- atomic_add_unless() adds more memory barriers compared to the custom
  assembly
- the custom assembly here does "load, sub, beq" while
  atomic_add_unless() does "load, cmpeq, add, bne". This is okay because
  it compares against zero after subtraction while the generic code
  compares against 1 before.

I'm not sure if avoiding the stack frame (and GP reloading) brings a lot
in terms of performance. Regarding the different barriers, Peter
Zijlstra says:

|refcount decrement needs to be a RELEASE operation, such that all the
|load/stores to the object happen before we decrement the refcount.
|
|Otherwise things like:
|
|        obj->foo = 5;
|        refcnt_dec(&obj->ref);
|
|can be re-ordered, which then allows fun scenarios like:
|
|        CPU0                            CPU1
|
|        refcnt_dec(&obj->ref);
|                                        if (dec_and_test(&obj->ref))
|                                                free(obj);
|        obj->foo = 5; // oops UaF
|
|
|This means (for alpha) that there should be a memory barrier _before_
|the decrement, however the dec_and_lock asm thing only has one _after_,
|which, per the above, is too late.
|
|The generic version using add_unless will result in memory barrier
|before and after (because that is the rule for atomic ops with a return
|value) which is strictly too many barriers for the refcount story, but
|who knows what other ordering requirements code has.

Remove the custom alpha implementation of dec_and_lock() and if it is an
issue (performance wise) then the fast path could still be inlined.

Michael Cree 6fd16ce559 alpha: Implement CPU vulnerabilities sysfs functions.
Implement the CPU vulnerabilty show functions for meltdown, spectre_v1
and spectre_v2 on Alpha.

Tests on XP1000 (EV67/667MHz) and ES45 (EV68CB/1.25GHz) show them
to be vulnerable to Meltdown and Spectre V1. In the case of
Meltdown I saw a 1 to 2% success rate in reading bytes on the
XP1000 and 50 to 60% success rate on the ES45. (This compares to
99.97% success reported for Intel CPUs.) Report EV6 and later
CPUs as vulnerable.

Tests on PWS600au (EV56/600MHz) for Spectre V1 attack were
unsuccessful (though I did not try particularly hard) so mark EV4
through to EV56 as not vulnerable.
