some internal memory errors happen. So it is better to check the return

Tegra234 chip scratch register communication between audio

by writing non-zero values to verb 0xF80 instead of 31st bit

The GCAP register on Tegra234 implies no Input Streams(ISS)
supported, but the HW output stream descriptor programming
should start with offset 0x20*4 from base stream descriptor
address. This will be a problem while calculating the offset
for output stream descriptor which will be considering input
stream also. So here output stream starts with offset 0 which
is wrong as HW register for output stream offset starts with 4.
So hardcode the input stream numbers to 4 to avoid the issue
in offset calculation.

Implement HDA keep alive (KAE) support for Intel display codecs. When no
audio stream is active, the display codec will provide a continuous clock
and a valid but silent audio stream to any connected HDMI/DP receiver.
Without this, upon starting a new playback stream, initial samples may be
lost as many receivers require time to initialize for new clock.
This is a new feature in Intel AlderLake-P display codec implementation
and replaces the Intel i915 silent-stream extension that has been used
on older hardware. Main benefit of the new method is that codec no longer
needs to be kept in D0 power state.
This patch depends on commit 112a87c48e ("drm/i915/display: program
audio CDCLK-TS for keepalives").

The recently introduced coef_mutex for Realtek codec seems causing a
deadlock when the relevant code is invoked from the power-off state;
then the HD-audio core tries to power-up internally, and this kicks
off the codec runtime PM code that tries to take the same coef_mutex.
In order to avoid the deadlock, do the temporary power up/down around
the coef_mutex acquisition and release. This assures that the
power-up sequence runs before the mutex, hence no re-entrance will
happen.

(Only an error message is printed if the value is non-zero that the

So change the prototype of the remove function to return no value. This
way driver authors are not tempted to assume that passing an error to
the upper layer is a good idea. All drivers are adapted accordingly.
There is no intended change of behaviour, all callbacks were prepared to

HD-audio driver handles the multiple instances and keeps the static
index that is incremented at each probe. This becomes a problem when
user tries to re-bind the device via sysfs multiple times; as the
device index isn't cleared unlike rmmod case, it points to the next
element at re-binding, and eventually later you can't probe any more
when it reaches to SNDRV_CARDS_MAX (usually 32).
This patch is an attempt to improve the handling at rebinding.
Instead of a static device index, now we keep a bitmap and assigns to
the first zero bit position. At the driver remove, in return, the
bitmap slot is cleared again, so that it'll be available for the next
probe.

Newer versions of the X570 Master come with a newer revision of the
mainboard chipset - the X570S. These boards have the same ALC1220 codec
but seem to initialize the codec with a different parameter in Coef 0x7
which causes the output audio to be very low. We therefore write a
known-good value to Coef 0x7 to fix that. As the value is the exact same
as on the other X570(non-S) boards the same quirk-function can be shared
between both generations.
This commit adds the Gigabyte X570S Aorus Master to the list of boards
using the ALC1220_FIXUP_GB_X570 quirk. This fixes both, the silent output
and the no-audio after reboot from windows problems.

The COEF access is done with two steps: setting the index then read or
write the data. When multiple COEF accesses are performed
concurrently, the index and data might be paired unexpectedly.
In most cases, this isn't a big problem as the COEF setup is done at
the initialization, but some dynamic changes like the mute LED may hit
such a race.
For avoiding the racy COEF accesses, this patch introduces a new
mutex coef_mutex to alc_spec, and wrap the COEF accessing functions
with it.

The LED class devices that are created by HD-audio codec drivers are
registered via devm_led_classdev_register() and associated with the
HD-audio codec device. Unfortunately, it turned out that the devres
release doesn't work for this case; namely, since the codec resource
release happens before the devm call chain, it triggers a NULL
dereference or a UAF for a stale set_brightness_delay callback.
For fixing the bug, this patch changes the LED class device register
and unregister in a manual manner without devres, keeping the
instances in hda_gen_spec.

This patch addresses an issue where after rebooting from Windows into Linux
there would be no audio output.
It turns out that the Realtek Audio driver on Windows changes some coeffs
which are not being reset/reinitialized when rebooting the machine. As a
result, there is no audio output until these coeffs are being reset to
their initial state. This patch takes care of that by setting known-good
(initial) values to the coeffs.
We initially relied upon alc1220_fixup_clevo_p950() to fix some pins in the
connection list. However, it also sets coef 0x7 which does not need to be
touched. Furthermore, to prevent mixing device-specific quirks I introduced
a new alc1220_fixup_gb_x570() which is heavily based on
alc1220_fixup_clevo_p950() but does not set coeff 0x7 and fixes the coeffs
that are actually needed instead.
This new alc1220_fixup_gb_x570() is believed to also work for other boards,
like the Gigabyte X570 Aorus Extreme and the newer Gigabyte Aorus X570S
Master. However, as there is no way for me to test these I initially only
enable this new behaviour for the mainboard I have which is the Gigabyte
X570(non-S) Aorus Master.
I tested this patch on the 5.15 branch as well as on master and it is
working well for me.

HDA regression is recently reported on Tegra194 based platforms.
This happens because "hda2codec_2x" reset does not really exist
in Tegra194 and it causes probe failure. All the HDA based audio
tests fail at the moment. This underlying issue is exposed by
commit c045ceb5a1 ("reset: tegra-bpmp: Handle errors in BPMP
response") which now checks return code of BPMP command response.
Fix this issue by skipping unavailable reset on Tegra194.

HDA uses a timecounter to read a hardware clock running at 24 MHz. The
conversion factor is set with a mult value of 125 and a shift value of 0,
which is not converting the hardware clock to nanoseconds, it is converting
to 1/3 nanoseconds because the conversion factor from 24Mhz to nanoseconds
is 125/3. The usage sites divide the "nanoseconds" value returned by
timecounter_read() by 3 to get a real nanoseconds value.
There is a lengthy comment in azx_timecounter_init() explaining this
choice. That comment makes blatantly wrong assumptions about how
timecounters work and what can overflow.
The comment says:
* Applying the 1/3 factor as part of the multiplication
* requires at least 20 bits for a decent precision, however
* overflows occur after about 4 hours or less, not a option.
timecounters operate on time deltas between two readouts of a clock and use
the mult/shift pair to calculate a precise nanoseconds value:
delta_nsec = (delta_clock * mult) >> shift;
The fractional part is also taken into account and preserved to prevent
accumulated rounding errors. For details see cyclecounter_cyc2ns().
The mult/shift pair has to be chosen so that the multiplication of the
maximum expected delta value does not result in a 64bit overflow. As the
counter wraps around on 32bit, the maximum observable delta between two
reads is (1 << 32) - 1 which is about 178.9 seconds.
That in turn means the maximum multiplication factor which fits into an u32
will not cause a 64bit overflow ever because it's guaranteed that:
((1 << 32) - 1) ^ 2 < (1 << 64)
The resulting correct multiplication factor is 2796202667 and the shift
value is 26, i.e. 26 bit precision. The overflow of the multiplication
would happen exactly at a clock readout delta of 6597069765 which is way
after the wrap around of the hardware clock at around 274.8 seconds which
is off from the claimed 4 hours by more than an order of magnitude.
If the counter ever wraps around the last read value then the calculation
is off by the number of wrap arounds times 178.9 seconds because the
overflow cannot be observed.
Use clocks_calc_mult_shift(), which calculates the most accurate mult/shift
pair based on the given clock frequency, and remove the bogus comment along
with the divisions at the readout sites.

For cs8409, it is required to run Jack Detect on resume.
Jack Detect on cs8409+cs42l42 requires an interrupt from
cs42l42 to be sent to cs8409 which is propogated to the driver
via an unsolicited event.
However, the hda_codec drops unsolicited events if the power_state
is not set to PMSG_ON. Which is set at the end of the resume call.
This means there is a race condition between setting power_state
to PMSG_ON and receiving the interrupt.
To solve this, we can add an API to set the power_state earlier
and call that before we start Jack Detect.
This does not cause issues, since we know inside our driver that
we are already initialized, and ready to handle the unsolicited
events.

The previous fix for more comprehensive runtime PM calls turned out to
be not good as hoped; a few calls including pm_runtime_enable() and
pm_runtime_disable() are rather utterly superfluous for PCI devices,
even triggering a kernel error message. Better to drop those calls.
Note that the problem we wanted to solve with that commit seems
irrelevant with the fix itself; the original bug (a GPF at
azx_remove()) was likely a regression by the recent PCI core cleanup,
and the buggy PCI change has been already reverted. So basically we
were scratching a wrong surface. OTOH, making the runtime PM calls
symmetric for both probe and remove is more consistent, and maybe
that's a sensible outcome.

The master and next_conj of rcs_ops are used for iterating the
resource list entries, and currently those are supposed to return the
current value. The problem is that next_conf may go over the last
entry before the loop abort condition is evaluated, and it may return
the "current" value that is beyond the array size. It was caught
recently as a GPF, for example.
Those return values are, however, never actually evaluated, hence
basically we don't have to consider the current value as the return at
all. By dropping those return values, the potential out-of-range
access above is also fixed automatically.
This patch changes the return type of master and next_conj callbacks
to void and drop the superfluous code accordingly.

When a codec is unbound dynamically via sysfs while its stream is in
use, we may face a potential deadlock at the proc remove or a UAF.
This happens since the hda_pcm is managed by a linked list, as it
handles the hda_pcm object release via kref.
When a PCM is opened at the unbinding time, the release of hda_pcm
gets delayed and it ends up with the close of the PCM stream releasing
the associated hda_pcm object of its own. The hda_pcm destructor
contains the PCM device release that includes the removal of procfs
entries. And, this removal has the sync of the close of all in-use
files -- which would never finish because it's called from the PCM
file descriptor itself, i.e. it's trying to shoot its foot.
For addressing the deadlock above, this patch changes the way to
manage and release the hda_pcm object. The kref of hda_pcm is
dropped, and instead a simple refcount is introduced in hda_codec for
keeping the track of the active PCM streams, and at each PCM open and
close, this refcount is adjusted accordingly. At unbinding, the
driver calls snd_device_disconnect() for each PCM stream, then
synchronizes with the refcount finish, and finally releases the object
resources.

Currently we haven't explicitly enable and allow/forbid the runtime PM
at the probe and the remove phases of HD-audio controller driver, and
this was the reason of a GPF mentioned in the commit e81478bbe7
("ALSA: hda: fix general protection fault in azx_runtime_idle");
namely, even after the resources are released, the runtime PM might be
still invoked by the bound graphics driver during the remove of the
controller driver. Although we've fixed it by clearing the drvdata
reference, it'd be also better to cover the runtime PM issue more
properly.
This patch adds a few more pm_runtime_*() calls at the probe and the
remove time for setting and cleaning up the runtime PM. Particularly,
now more explicitly pm_runtime_enable() and _disable() get called as
well as pm_runtime_forbid() call at the remove callback, so that a
use-after-free should be avoided.

The recent change in hda-intel driver to allow repeated probes
surfaced a problem that has been hidden until; the probe process in
the work calls azx_free() at the error path, and this skips the card
free process that eventually releases codec instances. As a result,
we get a kernel WARNING like:
snd_hda_intel 0000:00:1f.3: Cannot probe codecs, giving up
------------[ cut here ]------------
WARNING: CPU: 14 PID: 186 at sound/hda/hdac_bus.c:73
....
For fixing this, we need to call snd_card_free() instead of
azx_free(). Additionally, the device drvdata has to be cleared, as
the driver binding itself is still active. Then the PM and other
driver callbacks will ignore the procedure.

The recent fix for setting up the DMA buffer type on RME drivers tried
to address the non-standard memory managements and changed the DMA
buffer information to the standard snd_dma_buffer object that is
allocated at the probe time. However, I overlooked that the RME
drivers handle the buffer addresses based on 64k alignment, and the
previous conversion broke that silently.
This patch is an attempt to fix the regression. The snd_dma_buffer
objects are copied to the original data with the correction to the
aligned accesses, and those are passed to snd_pcm_set_runtime_buffer()
helpers instead. The original snd_dma_buffer objects are managed by
devres, hence they'll be released automagically.

In laptop 'HP Spectre x360 Convertible 15-eb1xxx/8811' both front and
rear speakers are silent, this patch fixes that by overriding the pin
layout and by initializing the amplifier which needs a GPIO pin to be
set to 1 then 0, similar to the existing HP Spectre x360 14 model.
In order to have volume control, both front and rear speakers were
forced to use the DAC1.
This patch also correctly map the mute LED but since there is no
microphone on/off switch exposed by the alsa subsystem it never turns
on by itself.
There are still known audio issues in this laptop: headset microphone
doesn't work, the button to mute/unmute microphone is not yet mapped,
the LED of the mute/unmute speakers doesn't seems to be exposed via
GPIO and never turns on.

We need to define the codec pin 0x1b to be the mic, but somehow
the mic doesn't support hot plugging detection, and Windows also has
this issue, so we set it to phantom headset-mic.
Also the determine_headset_type() often returns the omtp type by a
mistake when we plug a ctia headset, this makes the mic can't record
sound at all. Because most of the headset are ctia type nowadays and
some machines have the fixed ctia type audio jack, it is possible this
machine has the fixed ctia jack too. Here we set this mic jack to
fixed ctia type, this could avoid the mic type detection mistake and
make the ctia headset work stable.

It seems that a few recent AMD systems show the codec configuration
errors at the early boot, while loading the driver at a later stage
works magically. Although the root cause of the error isn't clear,
it's certainly not bad to allow retrying the codec probe in such a
case if that helps.
This patch adds the capability for retrying the probe upon codec probe
errors on the certain AMD platforms. The probe_work is changed to a
delayed work, and at the secondary call, it'll jump to the codec
probing.
Note that, not only adding the re-probing, this includes the behavior
changes in the codec configuration function. Namely,
snd_hda_codec_configure() won't unregister the codec at errors any
longer. Instead, its caller, azx_codec_configure() unregisters the
codecs with the probe failures *if* any codec has been successfully
configured. If all codec probe failed, it doesn't unregister but let
it re-probed -- which is the most case we're seeing and this patch
tries to improve.
Even if the driver doesn't re-probe or give up, it will go to the
"free-all" error path, hence the leftover codecs shall be disabled /
deleted in anyway.

The commit f87e7f2589 ("ALSA: hda - Improved position reporting on
SKL+") changed the PCM position report for SKL+ chips to use DPIB, but
according to Pierre, DPIB is no best choice for the accurate position
reports and it often reports too early. The recommended method is
rather the classical position buffer.
This patch makes the PCM position reporting on SKL+ back to the
position buffer again.

The position reporting on Intel Skylake and later chips via
azx_get_pos_skl() contains a udelay(20) call for the capture streams.
A call for this alone doesn't sound too harmful. However, as the
pointer PCM ops is one of the hottest path in the PCM operations --
especially for the timer-scheduled operations like PulseAudio -- such
a delay hogs CPU usage significantly in the total performance.
The code there was taken from the original code in ASoC SST Skylake
driver blindly. The udelay() is a workaround for the case where the
reported position is behind the period boundary at the timing
triggered from interrupts; applications often expect that the full
data is available for the whole period when returned (and also that's
the definition of the ALSA PCM period).
OTOH, HD-audio (legacy) driver has already some workarounds for the
delayed position reporting due to its relatively large FIFO, such as
the BDL position adjustment and the delayed period-elapsed call in the
work. That said, the udelay() is almost superfluous for HD-audio
driver unlike SST, and we can drop the udelay().
Though, the current code doesn't guarantee the full period readiness
as mentioned in the above, but rather it checks the wallclock and
detects the unexpected jump. That's one missing piece, and the drop
of udelay() needs a bit more sanity checks for the delayed handling.
This patch implements those: the drop of udelay() call in
azx_get_pos_skl() and the more proper check of hwptr in
azx_position_ok(). The latter change is applied only for the case
where the stream is running in the normal mode without
no_period_wakeup flag. When no_period_wakeup is set, it essentially
ignores the period handling and rather concentrates only on the
current position; which implies that we don't need to care about the
period boundary at all.

Although we modified the codec shutdown callback to perform
runtime-suspend, it's still not fully effective, as this may be
resumed again at any time later.
For fixing such an unwanted resume, this patch replaces
pm_runtime_suspend() with pm_runtime_force_suspend(), and call
pm_runtime_disable() afterward. It assures to keep the device
suspended.
Also for code simplification, we apply the code unconditionally; when

There are tons of quirks for HD-audio and many of them are without
model string, hence it's not trivial to apply the same quirk for a new
device. This patch makes it easier: namely, the model string accepts
a form as "XXXX:YYYY" (a pair of hex numbers of the subsystem-vendor
and subsystem-device IDs), to specify the alias of PCI (or codec)
SSID. e.g. passing model=1234:abcd would apply the quirk that matches

ASUS ROG Strix G17 has the very same PCI and codec SSID (1043:103f) as
ASUS TX300, and unfortunately, the existing quirk for TX300 is broken
on ASUS ROG. Actually the device works without the quirk, so we'll
need to clear the quirk before applying for this device.
Since ASUS ROG has a different codec (ALC294 - while TX300 has
ALC282), this patch adds a workaround for the device, just clearing
the codec->fixup_id by checking the codec vendor_id.
It's a bit ugly to add such a workaround there, but it seems to be the

The commit 0165c4e19f ("ALSA: hda: Fix hang during shutdown due to
link reset") modified the shutdown callback of the HD-audio controller
for working around a hang. Meanwhile, the actual culprit of the hang
was identified to be the leftover active codecs that may interfere
with the powered down controller somehow, but we took a minimal fix
approach for 5.14, and that was the commit above.
Now, since the codec drivers go runtime-suspend at shutdown for 5.15,
we can revert the change and make sure that the full runtime-suspend
is performed at shutdown of HD-audio controller again. This patch
essentially reverts the commit above to restore the behavior.

So far we have a few workarounds at shutdown for each codec,
e.g. turning off the display power and setting the codec to D3.
But all those are basically a part of the suspend procedure.
Moreover, the streams are still active after that call, hence it might
hit the update on the codec that has been already put to D3.
In this patch, instead of calling each reboot_notify callback, simply
put the codec into the runtime-suspended state after the manual
suspend of all PCM streams. It makes the code and the behavior more
consistent.
The reboot_notify callback is no longer used after this patch, and
will be cleaned up later.

Only disable I2C clock 25 ms after not being used.
The current implementation enables and disables the I2C clock for each
I2C transaction. Each enable/disable call requires two verb transactions.
This means each I2C transaction requires a total of four verb transactions
to enable and disable the clock.
However, if there are multiple consecutive I2C transactions, it is not
necessary to enable and disable the clock each time, instead it is more
efficient to enable the clock for the first transaction, and disable it
after the final transaction, which would improve performance.
This is achieved by using a timeout which disables the clock if no request
to enable the clock has occurred for 25 ms.

CS46xx driver switches the buffer depending on the number of periods,
and in some cases it switches to the own buffer without updating the
buffer type properly. This may cause a problem with the mmap on
exotic architectures that require the own mmap call for the coherent
DMA buffer.
This patch addresses the potential breakage by replacing the buffer
setup with the proper macro. It also simplifies the source code,
too.

Although the regression of the mmap was fixed in the recent commit
dc0dc8a73e ("ALSA: pcm: Fix mmap breakage without explicit buffer
setup"), RME9652 and HDSP drivers have still potential issues with
their mmap handling. Namely, they use the default mmap handler
without the standard buffer preallocation, and PCM core wouldn't use
the coherent DMA mapping. It's practically OK on x86, but on some
exotic architectures, it wouldn't work.
This patch addresses the potential breakage by replacing the buffer
setup with the proper macro. It also simplifies the source code,
too.

This patch is an attempt to slightly simplify the resource management
in HD-audio code, by using some device-managed APIs. Only a few
resources like PCI enablement and PCI resources managed via devres,
but most of the rest code dealing with HD-audio core stuff couldn't be
changed so much, hence the changes in this patch are pretty small in
the end. A special caveat is needed for the card object: we can't
move the card object release into devres, because the driver is
involved with the component stuff and its unregistiration doesn't work
well from devres release at all.

Like the previous patch, this patch converts the resource allocations
with device-managed API calls, so that we can reduce resource-free
calls.
The atiixp drivers are simpler than intel8x0, and even the irq can be
allocated with devres.
The end result is a good amount of code reduction.

This patch refactors the intel8x0 and intel8x0m driver codes using
devres and gets rid of the driver remove callback.
The conversion is fairly straightforward: each API call is replaced
with the device-managed API function, e.g. pci_enable_device() ->
pcim_enable_device(), and so on. The buffer descriptor list is
allocated with a new API, snd_devm_alloc_pages().
A slight code structure change is that the intel8x0 object is
allocated as a card's private_data instead of the own lowlevel
snd_device object. This simplifies the resource management.
And, the take-down procedure is triggered via card->private_free, and
it's registered at the end of the whole initialization, i.e. after the
all resources get properly managed.
The only not-devres-managed resource is the irq handler. Since we
need to release at suspend and re-acquire at resume (otherwise
something weird happens on some machines), this is still managed
manually. But the rest are all freed automatically.
The end result is a good amount of code reduction.

The intel8x0 driver tries to measure the AC97 bus clock at the probe
time because there have been machines that are driven in different
rate (44.1kHz vs 48kHz). This was the past and currently most of
usages of this driver are on VM, and those are certainly fixed with
48k clock, hence it's useless and waste of time to measure.
This patch is an optimization, setting the fixed 48k rate if it's
detected to be running on a VM.

On Intel platforms, we always enable all pins no matter what BIOS
sets, but for others, we still take the conservative approach, and the
HD-audio HDMI codec driver enables the streams only for the pins that
are enabled by BIOS, and skips the disabled pins. This seems not good
for some machines that have (as expected) broken BIOS, resulting in
the lack of needed outputs.
There is an allow-list in the driver code to enable all pins, but its
addition needs a recompilation. This patch adds a module option for
user's convenience to enable all pins forcibly on the fly. User can
pass snd_hda_codec_hdmi.enable_all_pins=1 option for testing, and once
confirmed, we may add a static entry in force_connect_list[].

Make sure the HDA driver's display power reference is released during
shutdown/reboot.
During the shutdown/reboot sequence the pci device core calls the
pm_runtime_resume handler for all devices before calling the driver's
shutdown callback and so the HDA driver's runtime resume callback will
acquire a display power reference (on HSW/BDW). This triggers a power
reference held WARN on HSW/BDW in the i915 driver's subsequent shutdown
handler, which expects all display power references to be released by
that time.
Since the HDA controller is stopped in the shutdown handler in any case,
let's follow here the same sequence as the one during runtime suspend.
This will also reset the HDA link and drop the display power reference,
getting rid of the above WARN.
Tested on HSW.

Asus Zenbook 14 UM431D has two speaker pins and a headphone pin, and
the auto-parser ends up assigning the bass to the third DAC 0x06.
Although the tone comes out, it's inconvenient because this DAC has no
volume control unlike two other DACs.
For obtaining the volume control for the bass speaker, this patch
enforces the mapping to let both front and bass speaker pins sharing
the same DAC. It's not ideal but a little bit of improvement.
Since we've already applied the same workaround for another ASUS
machine, we just need to hook the chain to the existing quirk.

I thought the latter one is harmless for non-Thinkpad, but it
