Eric Sandeen 4ddfef7b41 ext4: reduce mballoc stack usage with noinline_for_stack
mballoc.c is a whole lot of static functions, which gcc seems to
really like to inline.

With the changes below, on x86, I can at least get from:

432 ext4_mb_new_blocks
240 ext4_mb_free_blocks
208 ext4_mb_discard_group_preallocations
188 ext4_mb_seq_groups_show
164 ext4_mb_init_cache
152 ext4_mb_release_inode_pa
136 ext4_mb_seq_history_show
...

to

220 ext4_mb_free_blocks
188 ext4_mb_seq_groups_show
176 ext4_mb_regular_allocator
164 ext4_mb_init_cache
156 ext4_mb_new_blocks
152 ext4_mb_release_inode_pa
136 ext4_mb_seq_history_show
124 ext4_mb_release_group_pa
...

which still has some big functions in there, but not 432 bytes!

Aneesh Kumar K.V 161e7b7c1d ext4: Cache the correct extent length for uninit extents
When we convert an uninitialized extent to an initialized extent
we need to make sure we return the number of blocks in the

Aneesh Kumar K.V 1a89734d40 ext4: Return unwritten buffer head when trying to read from prealloc space.
ext4_ext_get_blocks() returns the number of blocks allocated with buffer
head unmapped for a read from prealloc space. This is needed so that
delayed allocation doesn't do block reservation for prealloc space
since the blocks are already reserved on disk. Mark the buffer head
unwritten. Some code paths try to read the block if the buffer_head is
not new and no uptodate. Marking the buffer head unwritten avoids this
reading.

Aneesh Kumar K.V e067ba0078 ext4: make ext4_ext_get_blocks always return <= max_blocks
ext4_ext_get_blocks() returns number of blocks allocated with buffer
heads unmapped for a read from prealloc space. This is needed so that
delayed allocation doesn't do block reservation for prealloc space since
the blocks are already resevred on disk. Fix ext4_ext_get_blocks to not
return greater than max_blocks, since some of the code paths cannot
handle such a return value.

Aneesh Kumar K.V fd28784adc ext4: Fix fallocate to update the file size in each transaction
ext4_fallocate needs to update file size in each transaction. Otherwise
if we crash the file size won't be seen. We were also not marking
the inode dirty after updating file size before. Also when we try to
retry allocation due to ENOSPC, make sure we reset the variable ret so
that we actually do a retry.

Aneesh Kumar K.V 267e4db9ac ext4: Fix race between migration and mmap write
Fail migrate if we allocated new blocks via mmap write.

If we write to holes in the file via mmap, we end up allocating
new blocks. This block allocation happens without taking inode->i_mutex.
Since migrate is protected by i_mutex and migrate expects that no
new blocks get allocated during migrate, fail migrate if new blocks
get allocated.

We can't take inode->i_mutex in the mmap write path because that
would result in a locking order violation between i_mutex and mmap_sem.
Also adding a separate rw_sempahore for protection is really high overhead
for a rare operation such as migrate.

Aneesh Kumar K.V 093a088b76 ext4: ENOSPC error handling for writing to an uninitialized extent
This patch handles possible ENOSPC errors when writing to an
uninitialized extent in case the filesystem is full.

A write to a prealloc area causes the split of an unititalized extent
into initialized and uninitialized extents. If we don't have
space to add new extent information, instead of returning error,
convert the existing uninitialized extent to initialized one. We
need to zero out the blocks corresponding to the entire extent to
prevent uninitialized data reaching userspace.

Hisashi Hifumi 53c550e975 ext4: fdatasync should skip metadata writeout when overwriting
Currently fdatasync is identical to fsync in ext3.

I think fdatasync should skip journal flush in data=ordered and
data=writeback mode when it overwrites to already-instantiated blocks on
HDD. When I_DIRTY_DATASYNC flag is not set, fdatasync should skip journal
writeout because this indicates only atime or/and mtime updates.

Following patch is the same approach of ext2's fsync code(ext2_sync_file).

I did a performance test using the sysbench.

#sysbench --num-threads=128 --max-requests=50000 --test=fileio --file-total-size=128G

Mingming Cao f5ab0d1f8f ext4: Fix BUG when writing to an unitialized extent
This patch fixes a bug when writing to preallocated but uninitialized
blocks, which resulted in a BUG in fs/buffer.c saying that the buffer
is not mapped.

When writing to a file, ext4_get_block_wrap() is called with create=1 in
order to request that blocks be allocated if necessary. It currently
calls ext4_get_blocks() with create=0 in order to do a lookup first. If
the inode contains an unitialized data block, the buffer head is left
unampped, which ext4_get_blocks_wrap() returns, causing the BUG.

We fix this by checking to see if the buffer head is unmapped, and if
so, we make sure the the buffer head is mapped by calling
ext4_ext_get_blocks with create=1.

for the directory is not always allocated in the same group as the
directory inode, but in one of the first groups of the filesystem (group 1
for example).
Depending on the current process's pid, ext4_find_near() and
ext4_ext_find_goal() can return a block number greater than the maximum
blocks count in the filesystem and in that case the block will be not
allocated in the same group as the inode.

The following patch fixes the problem.

This is the central patch of a cleanup series. In most cases there is no good
reason why someone would want to use a dentry for itself. This series reflects
that fact and embeds a struct path into nameidata.

Together with the other patches of this series
- it enforced the correct order of getting/releasing the reference count on
  <dentry,vfsmount> pairs
- it prepares the VFS for stacking support since it is essential to have a
struct path in every place where the stack can be traversed
- it reduces the overall code size:

without patch series:

Theodore Tso 469108ff3d ext4: Add new "development flag" to the ext4 filesystem
This flag is simply a generic "this is a crash/burn test filesystem"
marker. If it is set, then filesystem code which is "in development"
will be allowed to mount the filesystem. Filesystem code which is not
considered ready for prime-time will check for this flag, and if it is
not set, it will refuse to touch the filesystem.

As we start rolling ext4 out to distro's like Fedora, et. al, this makes
it less likely that a user might accidentally start using ext4 on a
production filesystem; a bad thing, since that will essentially make it
be unfsckable until e2fsprogs catches up.

Eric Sandeen 256bdb497c ext4: allocate struct ext4_allocation_context from a kmem cache
struct ext4_allocation_context is rather large, and this bloats
the stack of many functions which use it. Allocating it from
a named slab cache will alleviate this.

For example, with this change (on top of the noinline patch sent earlier):

-ext4_mb_new_blocks 200
+ext4_mb_new_blocks 40

-ext4_mb_free_blocks 344
+ext4_mb_free_blocks 168

-ext4_mb_release_inode_pa	216
+ext4_mb_release_inode_pa 40

-ext4_mb_release_group_pa	192
+ext4_mb_release_group_pa 24

Most of these stack-allocated structs are actually used only for
mballoc history; and in those cases often a smaller struct would do.
So changing that may be another way around it, at least for those
functions, if preferred. For now, in those cases where the ac
is only for history, an allocation failure simply skips the history
recording, and does not cause any other failures.

Jan Kara 7fb5409df0 ext4: Fix Direct I/O locking
We cannot start transaction in ext4_direct_IO() and just let it last
during the whole write because dio_get_page() acquires mmap_sem which
ranks above transaction start (e.g. because we have dependency chain
mmap_sem->PageLock->journal_start, or because we update atime while
holding mmap_sem) and thus deadlocks could happen. We solve the problem
by starting a transaction separately for each ext4_get_block() call.

We *could* have a problem that we allocate a block and before its data
are written out the machine crashes and thus we expose stale data. But
that does not happen because for hole-filling generic code falls back to
buffered writes and for file extension, we add inode to orphan list and
thus in case of crash, journal replay will truncate inode back to the
original size.

Eric Sandeen 0040d9875d allow in-inode EAs on ext4 root inode
The ext3 root inode was treated specially with respect
to in-inode extended attributes, for reasons detailed
in the removed comment below. The first mkfs-created
inodes would not get extra_i_size or the EXT3_STATE_XATTR
flag set in ext3_read_inode, which disallowed reading or
setting in-inode EAs on the root.

However, in ext4, ext4_mark_inode_dirty calls
ext4_expand_extra_isize for all inodes; once this is done
EAs may be placed in the root ext4 inode body.

But for reasons above, it won't be found after a reboot.

testcase:

setfattr -n user.name -v value mntpt/
setfattr -n user.name2 -v value2 mntpt/
umount mntpt/; remount mntpt/
getfattr -d mntpt/

name2/value2 has gone missing; debugfs shows it in the
inode body, but it is not found there by getattr.

The following fixes it up; newer mkfs appears to properly
zero the inodes, so this workaround isn't needed for ext4.

Christoph Lameter eebd2aa355 Pagecache zeroing: zero_user_segment, zero_user_segments and zero_user
Simplify page cache zeroing of segments of pages through 3 functions

zero_user_segments(page, start1, end1, start2, end2)

Zeros two segments of the page. It takes the position where to
start and end the zeroing which avoids length calculations and
	makes code clearer.

zero_user_segment(page, start, end)

        Same for a single segment.

zero_user(page, start, length)

Length variant for the case where we know the length.

We remove the zero_user_page macro. Issues:

1. Its a macro. Inline functions are preferable.

2. The KM_USER0 macro is only defined for HIGHMEM.

Having to treat this special case everywhere makes the
code needlessly complex. The parameter for zeroing is always
KM_USER0 except in one single case that we open code.

Avoiding KM_USER0 makes a lot of code not having to be dealing
with the special casing for HIGHMEM anymore. Dealing with
kmap is only necessary for HIGHMEM configurations. In those
configurations we use KM_USER0 like we do for a series of other
functions defined in highmem.h.

Since KM_USER0 is depends on HIGHMEM the existing zero_user_page
function could not be a macro. zero_user_* functions introduced
here can be be inline because that constant is not used when these
functions are called.

Also extract the flushing of the caches to be outside of the kmap.

Girish Shilamkar 818d276ceb ext4: Add the journal checksum feature
The journal checksum feature adds two new flags i.e
JBD2_FEATURE_INCOMPAT_ASYNC_COMMIT and JBD2_FEATURE_COMPAT_CHECKSUM.

JBD2_FEATURE_CHECKSUM flag indicates that the commit block contains the
checksum for the blocks described by the descriptor blocks.
Due to checksums, writing of the commit record no longer needs to be
synchronous. Now commit record can be sent to disk without waiting for
descriptor blocks to be written to disk. This behavior is controlled
using JBD2_FEATURE_ASYNC_COMMIT flag. Older kernels/e2fsck should not be
able to recover the journal with _ASYNC_COMMIT hence it is made
incompat.
The commit header has been extended to hold the checksum along with the
type of the checksum.

For recovery in pass scan checksums are verified to ensure the sanity
and completeness(in case of _ASYNC_COMMIT) of every transaction.

Eric Sandeen e7c9559300 ext4: fix oops on corrupted ext4 mount
When mounting an ext4 filesystem with corrupted s_first_data_block, things
can go very wrong and oops.

Because blocks_count in ext4_fill_super is a u64, and we must use do_div,
the calculation of db_count is done differently than on ext4. If
first_data_block is corrupted such that it is larger than ext4_blocks_count,
for example, then the intermediate blocks_count value may go negative,
but sign-extend to a very large value:

        blocks_count = (ext4_blocks_count(es) -
                        le32_to_cpu(es->s_first_data_block) +
                        EXT4_BLOCKS_PER_GROUP(sb) - 1);

This is then assigned to s_groups_count which is an unsigned long:

        sbi->s_groups_count = blocks_count;

This may result in a value of 0xFFFFFFFF which is then used to compute
db_count:

        db_count = (sbi->s_groups_count + EXT4_DESC_PER_BLOCK(sb) - 1) /
                   EXT4_DESC_PER_BLOCK(sb);

and in this case db_count will wind up as 0 because the addition overflows
32 bits. This in turn causes the kmalloc for group_desc to be of 0 size:

        sbi->s_group_desc = kmalloc(db_count * sizeof (struct buffer_head *),
                                    GFP_KERNEL);

and eventually in ext4_check_descriptors, dereferencing
sbi->s_group_desc[desc_block] will result in a NULL pointer dereference.

The simplest test seems to be to sanity check s_first_data_block,
EXT4_BLOCKS_PER_GROUP, and ext4_blocks_count values to be sure
their combination won't result in a bad intermediate value for
blocks_count. We could just check for db_count == 0, but
catching it at the root cause seems like it provides more info.

Takashi Sato afc7cbca5b ext4: Support large blocksize up to PAGESIZE
This patch set supports large block size(>4k, <=64k) in ext4,
just enlarging the block size limit. But it is NOT possible to have 64kB
blocksize on ext4 without some changes to the directory handling
code. The reason is that an empty 64kB directory block would have a
rec_len == (__u16)2^16 == 0, and this would cause an error to be hit in
the filesystem. The proposed solution is treat 64k rec_len
with a an impossible value like rec_len = 0xffff to handle this.

The Patch-set consists of the following 2 patches.
  [1/2] ext4: enlarge blocksize
         - Allow blocksize up to pagesize

  [2/2] ext4: fix rec_len overflow
         - prevent rec_len from overflow with 64KB blocksize

Now on 64k page ppc64 box runs with this patch set we could create a 64k

Linus Torvalds 0b832a4b93 Revert "ext2/ext3/ext4: add block bitmap validation"
This reverts commit 7c9e69faa2, fixing up
conflicts in fs/ext4/balloc.c manually.

The cost of doing the bitmap validation on each lookup - even when the
bitmap is cached - is absolutely prohibitive. We could, and probably
should, do it only when adding the bitmap to the buffer cache. However,
right now we are better off just reverting it.

Peter Zijlstra measured the cost of this extra validation as a 85%
decrease in cached iozone, and while I had a patch that took it down to
just 17% by not being _quite_ so stupid in the validation, it was still
a big slowdown that could have been avoided by just doing it right.

Jose R. Santos ce42158179 ext4: FLEX_BG Kernel support v2.
This feature relaxes check restrictions on where each block groups meta
data is located within the storage media. This allows for the allocation
of bitmaps or inode tables outside the block group boundaries in cases
where bad blocks forces us to look for new blocks which the owning block
group can not satisfy. This will also allow for new meta-data allocation
schemes to improve performance and scalability.

Andreas Dilger 717d50e497 Ext4: Uninitialized Block Groups
In pass1 of e2fsck, every inode table in the fileystem is scanned and checked,
regardless of whether it is in use. This is this the most time consuming part
of the filesystem check. The unintialized block group feature can greatly
reduce e2fsck time by eliminating checking of uninitialized inodes.

With this feature, there is a a high water mark of used inodes for each block
group. Block and inode bitmaps can be uninitialized on disk via a flag in the
group descriptor to avoid reading or scanning them at e2fsck time. A checksum
of each group descriptor is used to ensure that corruption in the group
descriptor's bit flags does not cause incorrect operation.

The feature is enabled through a mkfs option

	mke2fs /dev/ -O uninit_groups

A patch adding support for uninitialized block groups to e2fsprogs tools has
been posted to the linux-ext4 mailing list.

The patches have been stress tested with fsstress and fsx. In performance
tests testing e2fsck time, we have seen that e2fsck time on ext3 grows
linearly with the total number of inodes in the filesytem. In ext4 with the
uninitialized block groups feature, the e2fsck time is constant, based
solely on the number of used inodes rather than the total inode count.
Since typical ext4 filesystems only use 1-10% of their inodes, this feature can
greatly reduce e2fsck time for users. With performance improvement of 2-20
times, depending on how full the filesystem is.

The attached graph shows the major improvements in e2fsck times in filesystems
with a large total inode count, but few inodes in use.

In each group descriptor if we have

EXT4_BG_INODE_UNINIT set in bg_flags:
Inode table is not initialized/used in this group. So we can skip
        the consistency check during fsck.
EXT4_BG_BLOCK_UNINIT set in bg_flags:
No block in the group is used. So we can skip the block bitmap
        verification for this group.

We also add two new fields to group descriptor as a part of
uninitialized group patch.

        __le16 bg_itable_unused; /* Unused inodes count */
        __le16 bg_checksum; /* crc16(sb_uuid+group+desc) */

bg_itable_unused:

If we have EXT4_BG_INODE_UNINIT not set in bg_flags
then bg_itable_unused will give the offset within
the inode table till the inodes are used. This can be
used by fsck to skip list of inodes that are marked unused.

bg_checksum:
Now that we depend on bg_flags and bg_itable_unused to determine
the block and inode usage, we need to make sure group descriptor
is not corrupt. We add checksum to group descriptor to
detect corruption. If the descriptor is found to be corrupt, we
mark all the blocks and inodes in the group used.

Mathieu Desnoyers 2b47c3611d Fix f_version type: should be u64 instead of unsigned long
Fix f_version type: should be u64 instead of long

There is a type inconsistency between struct inode i_version and struct file
f_version.

fs.h:

struct inode
  u64                     i_version;

and

struct file
  unsigned long           f_version;

Users do:

fs/ext3/dir.c:

if (filp->f_version != inode->i_version) {

So why isn't f_version a u64 ? It becomes a problem if versions gets
higher than 2^32 and we are on an architecture where longs are 32 bits.

This patch changes the f_version type to u64, and updates the users accordingly.

It applies to 2.6.23-rc2-mm2.

Peter Zijlstra 3cb4f9fa0c lib: percpu_counter_sub
Hugh spotted that some code does:
  percpu_counter_add(&counter, -unsignedlong)

which, when the amount argument is of type s32, sort-of works thanks to
two's-complement. However when we'd change the type to s64 this breaks on 32bit
machines, because the promotion rules zero extend the unsigned number.

Provide percpu_counter_sub() to hide the s64 cast. That is:
  percpu_counter_sub(&counter, foo)
is equal to:
  percpu_counter_add(&counter, -(s64)foo);

Eric Sandeen ef2b02d3e6 ext34: ensure do_split leaves enough free space in both blocks
The do_split() function for htree dir blocks is intended to split a leaf
block to make room for a new entry. It sorts the entries in the original
block by hash value, then moves the last half of the entries to the new
block - without accounting for how much space this actually moves. (IOW,
it moves half of the entry *count* not half of the entry *space*). If by
chance we have both large & small entries, and we move only the smallest
entries, and we have a large new entry to insert, we may not have created
enough space for it.

The patch below stores each record size when calculating the dx_map, and
then walks the hash-sorted dx_map, calculating how many entries must be
moved to more evenly split the existing entries between the old block and
the new block, guaranteeing enough space for the new entry.

The dx_map "offs" member is reduced to u16 so that the overall map size
does not change - it is temporarily stored at the end of the new block, and
if it grows too large it may be overwritten. By making offs and size both
u16, we won't grow the map size.

Also add a few comments to the functions involved.

Eric Sandeen 780dcdb211 fix inode_table test in ext234_check_descriptors
ext[234]_check_descriptors sanity checks block group descriptor geometry at
mount time, testing whether the block bitmap, inode bitmap, and inode table
reside wholly within the blockgroup. However, the inode table test is off
by one so that if the last block in the inode table resides on the last
block of the block group, the test incorrectly fails. This is because it
tests the last block as (start + length) rather than (start + length - 1).

This can be seen by trying to mount a filesystem made such as:

 mkfs.ext2 -F -b 1024 -m 0 -g 256 -N 3744 fsfile 1024

which yields:

EXT2-fs error (device loop0): ext2_check_descriptors: Inode table for group 0 not in group (block 101)!
 EXT2-fs: group descriptors corrupted!

There is a similar bug in e2fsprogs, patch already sent for that.

Noticed all warnings are occurs when the debug level is 0. Then found
the "jbd2: Move jbd2-debug file to debugfs" patch
http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux-2.6.git;a=commit;h=0f49d5d019afa4e94253bfc92f0daca3badb990b

changed the jbd2_journal_enable_debug from int type to u8, makes the
jbd_debug comparision is always true when the debugging level is 0. Thus
the compile warning occurs.

Thought about changing the jbd2_journal_enable_debug data type back to
int, but can't, because the jbd2-debug is moved to debug fs, where
calling debugfs_create_u8() to create the debugfs entry needs the value
to be u8 type.

Even if we changed the data type back to int, the code is still buggy,
kernel should not print jbd2 debug message if the
jbd2_journal_enable_debug is set to 0. But this is not the case.

The fix is change the level of debugging to 1. The same should fixed in
ext3/JBD, but currently ext3 jbd-debug via /proc fs is broken, so we
probably should fix it all together.

Fengguang Wu dc7868fcb9 readahead: convert ext3/ext4 invocations
Convert ext3/ext4 dir reads to use on-demand readahead.

Readahead for dirs operates _not_ on file level, but on blockdev level. This
makes a difference when the data blocks are not continuous. And the read
routine is somehow opaque: there's no handy info about the status of current
page. So a simplified call scheme is employed: to call into readahead
whenever the current page falls out of readahead windows.

Andreas Dilger f8628a14a2 ext4: Remove 65000 subdirectory limit
This patch adds support to ext4 for allowing more than 65000
subdirectories. Currently the maximum number of subdirectories is capped
at 32000.

If we exceed 65000 subdirectories in an htree directory it sets the
inode link count to 1 and no longer counts subdirectories. The
directory link count is not actually used when determining if a
directory is empty, as that only counts subdirectories and not regular
files that might be in there.

A EXT4_FEATURE_RO_COMPAT_DIR_NLINK flag has been added and it is set if
the subdir count for any directory crosses 65000. A later fsck will clear
EXT4_FEATURE_RO_COMPAT_DIR_NLINK if there are no longer any directory
with >65000 subdirs.

Kalpak Shah 6dd4ee7cab ext4: Expand extra_inodes space per the s_{want,min}_extra_isize fields
We need to make sure that existing ext3 filesystems can also avail the
new fields that have been added to the ext4 inode. We use
s_want_extra_isize and s_min_extra_isize to decide by how much we should
expand the inode. If EXT4_FEATURE_RO_COMPAT_EXTRA_ISIZE feature is set
then we expand the inode by max(s_want_extra_isize, s_min_extra_isize ,
sizeof(ext4_inode) - EXT4_GOOD_OLD_INODE_SIZE) bytes. Actually it is
still an open question about whether users should be able to set
s_*_extra_isize smaller than the known fields or not.

This patch also adds the functionality to expand inodes to include the
newly added fields. We start by trying to expand by s_want_extra_isize
bytes and if its fails we try to expand by s_min_extra_isize bytes. This
is done by changing the i_extra_isize if enough space is available in
the inode and no EAs are present. If EAs are present and there is enough
space in the inode then the EAs in the inode are shifted to make space.
If enough space is not available in the inode due to the EAs then 1 or
more EAs are shifted to the external EA block. In the worst case when
even the external EA block does not have enough space we inform the user
that some EA would need to be deleted or s_min_extra_isize would have to
be reduced.

Kalpak Shah ef7f38359e ext4: Add nanosecond timestamps
This patch adds nanosecond timestamps for ext4. This involves adding
*time_extra fields to the ext4_inode to extend the timestamps to
64-bits. Creation time is also added by this patch.

These extended fields will fit into an inode if the filesystem was
formatted with large inodes (-I 256 or larger) and there are currently
no EAs consuming all of the available space. For new inodes we always
reserve enough space for the kernel's known extended fields, but for
inodes created with an old kernel this might not have been the case. So
this patch also adds the EXT4_FEATURE_RO_COMPAT_EXTRA_ISIZE feature
flag(ro-compat so that older kernels can't create inodes with a smaller
extra_isize). which indicates if the fields fitting inside
s_min_extra_isize are available or not. If the expansion of inodes if
unsuccessful then this feature will be disabled. This feature is only
enabled if requested by the sysadmin.

None of the extended inode fields is critical for correct filesystem
operation.

This change was suggested by Andreas Dilger.
This patch changes the EXT_MAX_LEN value and extent code which marks/checks
uninitialized extents. With this change it will be possible to have
initialized extents with 2^15 blocks (earlier the max blocks we could have
was 2^15 - 1). This way we can have better extent-to-block alignment.
Now, maximum number of blocks we can have in an initialized extent is 2^15
and in an uninitialized extent is 2^15 - 1.

Satyam Sharma 3bd858ab1c Introduce is_owner_or_cap() to wrap CAP_FOWNER use with fsuid check
Introduce is_owner_or_cap() macro in fs.h, and convert over relevant
users to it. This is done because we want to avoid bugs in the future
where we check for only effective fsuid of the current task against a
file's owning uid, without simultaneously checking for CAP_FOWNER as
well, thus violating its semantics.
[ XFS uses special macros and structures, and in general looked ...
untouchable, so we leave it alone -- but it has been looked over. ]

The (current->fsuid != inode->i_uid) check in generic_permission() and
exec_permission_lite() is left alone, because those operations are
covered by CAP_DAC_OVERRIDE and CAP_DAC_READ_SEARCH. Similarly operations
falling under the purview of CAP_CHOWN and CAP_LEASE are also left alone.

Badari Pulavarty 5e70030d4c ext4: statfs speed up
This is a patch that speeds up statfs. It is very simple - the "overhead"
calculation, which takes a huge amount of time for large filesystems, never
changes unless the size of the filesystem itself changes. That means we can
store it in memory and only recalculate if the filesystem has been resized
(almost never).

It also fixes a minor problem that we never update the on-disk superblock free
blocks/inodes counts until the filesystem is unmounted. While not fatal, we
may as well update that on disk when we have the information, and it makes
things like debugfs and dumpe2fs report a bit more accurate info.

  [<ffffffff80111479>] error_exit+0x0/0x81
  [<ffffffff80110aba>] system_call+0x7e/0x83

First messages said that unlinked inode has i_nlink=0, then ext3_unlink()
adds this inode into orphan list.

Second message means that this inode has not been removed from orphan list.
Inode dump has showed that i_fop = &bad_file_ops and it can be set in
make_bad_inode() only. Then I've found that ext3_read_inode() can call
make_bad_inode() without any error/warning messages, for example in the
following case:

...
        if (inode->i_nlink == 0) {
                if (inode->i_mode == 0 ||
                    !(EXT3_SB(inode->i_sb)->s_mount_state & EXT3_ORPHAN_FS)) {
/* this inode is deleted */
                        brelse (bh);
                        goto bad_inode;
...

Bad inode can live some time, ext3_unlink can add it to orphan list, but
ext3_delete_inode() do not deleted this inode from orphan list. As result
we can have orphan list corruption detected in ext3_destroy_inode().

However it is not clear for me how to fix this issue correctly.

As far as i see is_bad_inode() is called after iget() in all places
excluding ext3_lookup() and ext3_get_parent(). I believe it makes sense to
add bad inode check to these functions too and call iput if bad inode
detected.

Dmitriy Monakhov fedee54d8f ext3: dirindex error pointer issues
- ext3_dx_find_entry() exit with out setting proper error pointer

- do_split() exit with out setting proper error pointer
it is realy painful because many callers contain folowing code:

          de = do_split(handle,dir, &bh, frame, &hinfo, &retval);
          if (!(de))
                       return retval;
<<< WOW retval wasn't changed by do_split(), so caller failed
          <<< but return SUCCESS :)

- Rearrange do_split() error path. Current error path is realy ugly, all
this up and down jump stuff doesn't make code easy to understand.

Markus Rechberger 4d7bf11d64 ext2/3/4: fix file date underflow on ext2 3 filesystems on 64 bit systems
Taken from http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5079

signed long ranges from -2.147.483.648 to 2.147.483.647 on x86 32bit

10000011110110100100111110111101 .. -2,082,844,739
10000011110110100100111110111101 .. 2,212,122,557 <- this currently gets
stored on the disk but when converting it to a 64bit signed long value it loses
its sign and becomes positive.

Cc: Andreas Dilger <adilger@dilger.ca>
Cc: <linux-ext4@vger.kernel.org>

Andreas says:

This patch is now treating timestamps with the high bit set as negative
times (before Jan 1, 1970). This means we lose 1/2 of the possible range
of timestamps (lopping off 68 years before unix timestamp overflow -
now only 30 years away :-) to handle the extremely rare case of setting
timestamps into the distant past.

If we are only interested in fixing the underflow case, we could just
limit the values to 0 instead of storing negative values. At worst this
will skew the timestamp by a few hours for timezones in the far east
(files would still show Jan 1, 1970 in "ls -l" output).

That said, it seems 32-bit systems (mine at least) allow files to be set
into the past (01/01/1907 works fine) so it seems this patch is bringing
the x86_64 behaviour into sync with other kernels.

On the plus side, we have a patch that is ready to add nanosecond timestamps
to ext3 and as an added bonus adds 2 high bits to the on-disk timestamp so
this extends the maximum date to 2242.

Christoph Lameter 50953fe9e0 slab allocators: Remove SLAB_DEBUG_INITIAL flag
I have never seen a use of SLAB_DEBUG_INITIAL. It is only supported by
SLAB.

I think its purpose was to have a callback after an object has been freed
to verify that the state is the constructor state again? The callback is
performed before each freeing of an object.

I would think that it is much easier to check the object state manually
before the free. That also places the check near the code object
manipulation of the object.

Also the SLAB_DEBUG_INITIAL callback is only performed if the kernel was
compiled with SLAB debugging on. If there would be code in a constructor
handling SLAB_DEBUG_INITIAL then it would have to be conditional on
SLAB_DEBUG otherwise it would just be dead code. But there is no such code
in the kernel. I think SLUB_DEBUG_INITIAL is too problematic to make real
use of, difficult to understand and there are easier ways to accomplish the
same effect (i.e. add debug code before kfree).

There is a related flag SLAB_CTOR_VERIFY that is frequently checked to be
clear in fs inode caches. Remove the pointless checks (they would even be
pointless without removeal of SLAB_DEBUG_INITIAL) from the fs constructors.

This is the last slab flag that SLUB did not support. Remove the check for
unimplemented flags from SLUB.

Mingming Cao 8a2bfdcbfa [PATCH] ext[34]: EA block reference count racing fix
There are race issues around ext[34] xattr block release code.

ext[34]_xattr_release_block() checks the reference count of xattr block
(h_refcount) and frees that xattr block if it is the last one reference it.
Unlike ext2, the check of this counter is unprotected by any lock.
ext[34]_xattr_release_block() will free the mb_cache entry before freeing
that xattr block. There is a small window between the check for the re
h_refcount ==1 and the call to mb_cache_entry_free(). During this small
window another inode might find this xattr block from the mbcache and reuse
it, racing a refcount updates. The xattr block will later be freed by the
first inode without notice other inode is still use it. Later if that
block is reallocated as a datablock for other file, then more serious
problem might happen.

We need put a lock around places checking the refount as well to avoid
racing issue. Another place need this kind of protection is in
ext3_xattr_block_set(), where it will modify the xattr block content in-
the-fly if the refcount is 1 (means it's the only inode reference it).

This will also fix another issue: the xattr block may not get freed at all
if no lock is to protect the refcount check at the release time. It is
possible that the last two inodes could release the shared xattr block at
the same time. But both of them think they are not the last one so only
decreased the h_refcount without freeing xattr block at all.

We need to call lock_buffer() after ext3_journal_get_write_access() to
avoid deadlock (because the later will call lock_buffer()/unlock_buffer
() as well).

Tim Schmielau cd354f1ae7 [PATCH] remove many unneeded #includes of sched.h
After Al Viro (finally) succeeded in removing the sched.h #include in module.h
recently, it makes sense again to remove other superfluous sched.h includes.
There are quite a lot of files which include it but don't actually need
anything defined in there. Presumably these includes were once needed for
macros that used to live in sched.h, but moved to other header files in the
course of cleaning it up.

To ease the pain, this time I did not fiddle with any header files and only
removed #includes from .c-files, which tend to cause less trouble.

Compile tested against 2.6.20-rc2 and 2.6.20-rc2-mm2 (with offsets) on alpha,
arm, i386, ia64, mips, powerpc, and x86_64 with allnoconfig, defconfig,
allmodconfig, and allyesconfig as well as a few randconfigs on x86_64 and all
configs in arch/arm/configs on arm. I also checked that no new warnings were
introduced by the patch (actually, some warnings are removed that were emitted
by unnecessarily included header files).

Hugh Dickins 2e7842b887 [PATCH] fix umask when noACL kernel meets extN tuned for ACLs
Fix insecure default behaviour reported by Tigran Aivazian: if an ext2 or
ext3 or ext4 filesystem is tuned to mount with "acl", but mounted by a
kernel built without ACL support, then umask was ignored when creating
inodes - though root or user has umask 022, touch creates files as 0666,
and mkdir creates directories as 0777.

This appears to have worked right until 2.6.11, when a fix to the default
mode on symlinks (always 0777) assumed VFS applies umask: which it does,
unless the mount is marked for ACLs; but ext[234] set MS_POSIXACL in
s_flags according to s_mount_opt set according to def_mount_opts.

We could revert to the 2.6.10 ext[234]_init_acl (adding an S_ISLNK test);
but other filesystems only set MS_POSIXACL when ACLs are configured. We
could fix this at another level; but it seems most robust to avoid setting
the s_mount_opt flag in the first place (at the expense of more ifdefs).

Likewise don't set the XATTR_USER flag when built without XATTR support.

Eric Sandeen e6c4021190 [PATCH] handle ext4 directory corruption better
I've been using Steve Grubb's purely evil "fsfuzzer" tool, at
http://people.redhat.com/sgrubb/files/fsfuzzer-0.4.tar.gz

Basically it makes a filesystem, splats some random bits over it, then
tries to mount it and do some simple filesystem actions.

At best, the filesystem catches the corruption gracefully. At worst,
things spin out of control.

As you might guess, we found a couple places in ext4 where things spin out
of control :)

First, we had a corrupted directory that was never checked for
consistency... it was corrupt, and pointed to another bad "entry" of
length 0. The for() loop looped forever, since the length of
ext4_next_entry(de) was 0, and we kept looking at the same pointer over and
over and over and over... I modeled this check and subsequent action on
what is done for other directory types in ext4_readdir...

(adding this check adds some computational expense; I am testing a followup
patch to reduce the number of times we check and re-check these directory
entries, in all cases. Thanks for the idea, Andreas).

Next we had a root directory inode which had a corrupted size, claimed to
be > 200M on a 4M filesystem. There was only really 1 block in the
directory, but because the size was so large, readdir kept coming back for
more, spewing thousands of printk's along the way.

Per Andreas' suggestion, if we're in this read error condition and we're
trying to read an offset which is greater than i_blocks worth of bytes,
stop trying, and break out of the loop.

With these two changes fsfuzz test survives quite well on ext4.

Dmitry Mishin ceea16bf85 [PATCH] ext4: errors behaviour fix
Current error behaviour for ext2 and ext3 filesystems does not fully
correspond to the documentation and should be fixed.

According to man 8 mount, ext2 and ext3 file systems allow to set one of 3
different on-errors behaviours:

---- start of quote man 8 mount ----

  errors=continue / errors=remount-ro / errors=panic

Define the behaviour when an error is encountered. (Either ignore
errors and just mark the file system erroneous and continue, or remount
the file system read-only, or panic and halt the system.) The default is
set in the filesystem superblock, and can be changed using tune2fs(8).

  ---- end of quote ----

However EXT3_ERRORS_CONTINUE is not read from the superblock, and thus
ERRORS_CONT is not saved on the sbi->s_mount_opt. It leads to the incorrect
handle of errors on ext3.

Then we've checked corresponding code in ext2 and discovered that it is buggy
as well:

- EXT2_ERRORS_CONTINUE is not read from the superblock (the same);

- parse_option() does not clean the alternative values and thus something
  like (ERRORS_CONT|ERRORS_RO) can be set;

- if options are omitted, parse_option() does not set any of these options.

Therefore it is possible to set any combination of these options on the ext2:

- none of them may be set: EXT2_ERRORS_CONTINUE on superblock / empty mount
  options;

- any of them may be set using mount options;

- 2 any options may be set: by using EXT2_ERRORS_RO/EXT2_ERRORS_PANIC on the
  superblock and other value in mount options;

- and finally all three options may be set by adding third option in remount.

Currently ext2 uses these values only in ext2_error() and it is not leading to
any noticeable troubles. However somebody may be discouraged when he will try
to workaround EXT2_ERRORS_PANIC on the superblock by using errors=continue in
mount options.

This patch:

EXT4_ERRORS_CONTINUE should be taken from the superblock as default value for
error behaviour.

Andrew Morton f4e5bc244f [PATCH] ext4 64 bit divide fix
With CONFIG_LBD=n, sector_div() expands to a plain old divide. But ext4 is
_not_ passing in a sector_t as the first argument, so...

fs/built-in.o: In function `ext4_get_group_no_and_offset':
fs/ext4/balloc.c:39: undefined reference to `__umoddi3'
fs/ext4/balloc.c:41: undefined reference to `__udivdi3'
fs/built-in.o: In function `find_group_orlov':
fs/ext4/ialloc.c:278: undefined reference to `__udivdi3'
fs/built-in.o: In function `ext4_fill_super':
fs/ext4/super.c:1488: undefined reference to `__udivdi3'
fs/ext4/super.c:1488: undefined reference to `__umoddi3'
fs/ext4/super.c:1594: undefined reference to `__udivdi3'
fs/ext4/super.c:1601: undefined reference to `__umoddi3'

Fix that up by calling do_div() directly.

Also cast the arg to u64. do_div() is only defined on u64, and ext4_fsblk_t
is supposed to be opaque.

Note especially the changes to find_group_orlov(). It was attempting to do

	do_div(int, unsigned long long);

which is royally screwed up. Switched it to plain old divide.
