This patch adds kernel driver for M41T94 RTC chip connected via SPI.
I've tested it on two different AT91-based hardwares.
This is third revision of the patch: some comments made by
Alessandro Zummo fixed.

Remove implicit use of BKL in ioctl() from the RTC framework.
Instead, the rtc->ops_lock is used. That's the same lock that already
protects the RTC operations when they're issued through the exported
rtc_*() calls in drivers/rtc/interface.c ... making this a bugfix, not
just a cleanup, since both ioctl calls and set_alarm() need to update IRQ
enable flags and that implies a common lock (which RTC drivers as a rule
do not provide on their own).
A new comment at the declaration of "struct rtc_class_ops" summarizes
current locking rules. It's not clear to me that the exceptions listed
there should exist ... if not, those are pre-existing problems which can
be fixed in a patch that doesn't relate to BKL removal.

This mirrors the functionality that driver_find_device has as well.
We add a start variable, and all callers of the function are fixed up at
the same time.
The block layer will be using this new functionality in a follow-on
patch.

I have discovered that the current version of rtc-x1205.c does not work
correctly when asked to set the alarm time by the RTC_WKALM_SET ioctl()
call. This happens because the alarm registers do not behave like the
current-time registers. They are non-volatile. Two things go wrong:
- the X1205 requires a 10 msec delay after any attempt to write to the
non-volatile registers. The x1205_set_datetime() routine does the write
as 8 single-byte writes without any delay. Only the first write
succeeds. The second is NAKed because the chip is busy.
- the X1205 resets the RWEL bit after any write to the non-volatile
registers. This would lock out any further writes after the first even
with a 10msec delay.
I fix this by doing a single 8-byte write and then waiting 10msec for the
chip to be ready. A side effect of this change is that it will speed up
x1205_rtc_set_time() which uses the same code.
I have also implemented the 'enable' bit in the rtc_wkalm structure, which
the existing driver does not attempt to do. I have modified both
x1205_rtc_set_alarm() to set the AL0E bit, and x1205_rtc_read_alarm() to
return it.
I have tested this patch on a LinkSys NSLU2 under OpenWRT, but on no other
hardware. On the NSLU2 the X1205 correctly asserts its IRQ pin when the
alarm time matches the current time.

While 0e36a9a4a7 ("rtc: fix readback from
/sys/class/rtc/rtc?/wakealarm") made sure that active alarms were never
returned with invalid "wildcard" fields (negative), it can still report
(wrongly) that the alarm triggers in the past.
Example, if it's now 10am, an alarm firing at 5am will be triggered
TOMORROW not today. (Which may also be next month or next year...)
This updates that alarm handling in three ways:
* Handle alarm rollover in the common cases of RTCs that don't
support matching on all date fields.
* Skip the invalid-field logic when it's not needed.
* Minor bugfix ... tm_isdst should be ignored, it's one of the
fields Linux doesn't maintain.
A warning is emitted for some of the unhandled rollover cases, but the
possible combinations are a bit too numerous to handle every bit of
potential hardware and firmware braindamage.

rtc_device_register evaluates device_can_wakeup(rtc->dev.parent) and
supresses the creation of /sys/class/rtc/rtcX/wakealarm if
device_can_wakeup is not (yet) true.

Ramtron FM3130 is a chip with two separate devices inside, RTC clock and
FRAM. This driver provides only RTC functionality.
This chip is met in lots of custom boards with AT91SAMXXXX CPU I work
with, is cheap and in no way better or worse than any other RTC on market.
While it is mostly met on much smaller devices, I think it is great to
have it supported in Linux.

Recently (around 2.6.25) I've noticed that RTC no longer works for me. It
turned out this is because I use pnpacpi=off kernel option to work around
the parport_pc bugs. I always did so, but RTC used to work fine in the
past, and now it have regressed.
The patch fixes the problem by creating the platform device for the RTC
when PNP is disabled. This may also help running the PNP-enabled kernel
on an older PCs.

triggered, not whether we're waiting for it. alarm->enabled indicates
that.

This hooks up the platform-specific [gs]et_rtc_time functions so that
kernels using CONFIG_RTC_CLASS have RTC support on most PowerPC platforms.
A new driver, and one which we've been shipping in Fedora for a while
already, since otherwise RTC support breaks.

Change the name of the device from "rtc-ds1374" to just "ds1374", to match

chosen to avoid possible confusion with an older ds1374 driver, but that

asm/mach/time.h is the ARM header file for setting up kernel ticker
timekeeping (be that the old jiffy interrupt or the new clocksource.)
RTC drivers have no business using this header file, and in fact do
not require it.

The input argument to rtc_time_to_tm() is unsigned as well as are members of
the output structure. However signed arithmetic is used within for
calculations leading to incorrect results for input values outside the signed
positive range. If this happens the time of day returned is out of range.
Found the problem when fiddling with the RTC and the driver where year was set
to an unexpectedly large value like 2070, e.g.:
rtc0: setting system clock to 2070-01-01 1193046:71582832:26 UTC (3155760954)
while it should be:
rtc0: setting system clock to 2070-01-01 00:15:54 UTC (3155760954)
Changing types to unsigned fixes the problem.

As the old driver_name/type matching scheme is going away soon, change
the dummy device mechanism to use the new matching scheme.
This has the downside that dummy i2c clients can no longer choose
their name, they'll all appear as "dummy" in sysfs and in log
messages. I don't think it is a problem in practice though, as there
is little reason to use these i2c clients to log messages.

The file in drivers/rtc/rtc-ds1551.c uses "int" for flags. This can cause
hard to find bugs on some architectures. This patch converts the flags to use
"long" instead.
This bug was discovered by doing an allyesconfig make on the -rt kernel where
checks are done to ensure all flags are of size sizeof(long).

This patch allows new-style i2c chip drivers to have alias names using
the official kernel aliasing system and MODULE_DEVICE_TABLE(). At this

In current kernel if we want to set the alarm time, the absolute time the
seconds relative to 1970-01-01 00:00:00) should be written into
/sys/class/rtc/rtc0/wakealarm. It is not convenient.
It is more reasonable to add the support for the alarm time relative to
current RTC time.(the unit is second)
For example:
If the RTC is required to generate alarm after 2 minutes, the following
will be OK.
echo +120 > /sys/class/rtc/rtc0/wakealarm
or echo +0x78 > /sys/class/rtc/rtc0/wakealarm

rs5c_get_regs() currently uses rs5c->rtc->name for its debug printk when
i2c_transfer() fails, though it is used several times before the rtc dev
has been registered. The earliest we can get at the symbolic name is via
the i2c client's struct device, which can be handled by moving the first
rs5c_get_regs() until after the client pointer is assigned.

Kconfig tweaks to help reduce RTC configuration bugs, by avoiding
legacy RTC drivers when the generic RTC framework is enabled:
- If rtc-cmos is selected, disable the legacy rtc driver;
- When using generic RTC on x86, enable rtc-cmos by default;
- In the old "chardev RTC" section of Kconfig, add a comment
warning people off these (seven) legacy RTC drivers when
the generic framework is in use.
People can still use the legacy drivers if they want (or need) to.
This doesn't fix the broken dependencies for the legacy "CMOS" RTC driver.
Ideally it would be a full list of platforms where it works, not a partial
list of ones where it won't. Or better yet, it would depend on a
"HAVE_CMOS_RTC" flag defined by various platforms ... surely there's a
Kconfig style guideline lurking there.

There is a bug in the function of cmos_set_alarm. RTC alarm time for October
can't be set correctly.
For October: 0x0A will be written into the RTC region (MONTH_ALARM) in current
kernel. But in fact 0x10 should be written. Wildcards are also not handled
correctly.

For the "cmos" RTC, have /proc/driver/rtc say whether HPET based IRQ
emulation is in effect. Given the problems we've had with this particular
hardware maldesign (and the fact that most BIOS code seems not to provide
the IRQ routing needed to use the saner HPET modes), this should help
troubleshooting.

AT91sam9 RTC support, primarily in the form of an RTT-as-RTC driver that was
extracted from 2.6.23-at91 patch and updated:
- Relies on now-merged platform updates, which associate the RTT
hardware address with each RTT and use the "at91_rtt" name.
- RTC framework related fixes and cleanups, notably:
* removed now-needless suspend/resume clock offset logic
* alarm read/write now respects the "enabled" flag
* suspend always disables update irqs
* shutdown (and startup) disables all irqs
- Misc cleanup:
* use dev_*() messaging
* add comments
* remove globals,
* ... etc
- Don't force use of RTT0 and GPBR0. Either resource may need
to be used for other purposes (like NO_HZ support).
- Update "AT91RM9200 RTC" Kconfig to allow it on SAM9RL chips
(it has both RTT and RTC).
Driver binding uses bus_find_device() to avoid needing any kind of "timer
library" code when there's more than one RTT module. (This timer can be used
as an RTC, to support NO_HZ operation, or potentially for other stuff. The
choice is a per-system policy.)

Remove some more references to dev->power.power_state. That field is overdue
for removal, but we can't do that while it's still referenced in the kernel.
The only reason to update it was to make the /sys/devices/.../power/state
files (now removed) work better.

Start making the rtc-cmos alarm act more like a oneshot alarm by disabling
that alarm after its IRQ fires. (ACPI hooks are also needed.)
The Linux RTC framework has previously been a bit vague in this area, but
any other behavior is problematic and not very portable. RTCs with full
YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM[:SS] alarms won't have a problem here. Only ones with
partial match criteria, with the most visible example being the PC RTC, get
confused. (Because the criteria will match repeatedly.)
Update comments relating to that oneshot behavior and timezone handling.
(Timezones are another issue that's mostly visible with rtc-cmos. That's
because PCs often dual-boot MS-Windows, which likes its RTC to match local
wall-clock time instead of UTC.)

This adds a basic ds1302 RTC driver, which is basically a cleanup and move
of the in-tree SH SecureEdge5410 code (which is currently located in
arch/sh/board/snapgear/rtc.c) to drivers/rtc.
This aims to be a building block that the M32R and CRIS code can be worked
on top of, so we can get rid of drivers/char/ds1302.c and
arch/cris/arch-v10/drivers/ds1302.c respectively, though more work is
needed for this.

This makes rtc-cmos export its NVRAM, like several other RTC drivers.
It still works within the limits of the current CMOS_READ/CMOS_WRITE calls,
which don't understand how to access multiple register banks. The primary
impact of that limitation is that Linux can't access the uppermost 128
bytes of NVRAM on many systems.
Note that this isn't aiming to be a drop-in replacement for the legacy
/dev/nvram support. (Presumably that has real users, and isn't just
getting carried forward automatically?) Userspace handles more work:
- When userspace code updates NVRAM, that will need to include
updating any platform-specific checksums that may apply.
- No /proc/driver/nvram file will parse and display NVRAM data
according to whichever boot firmware your board expects.
Also minor pnp-related updates: update a comment, remove dead code.

With all of the different CPU types this was getting a but unwieldly.
Since sh64 is now integrated, we don't have to worry about multiple
architectures caring about the header definitions.
Split out the defs for each asm/cpu/ to make rtc-sh slightly less
visually offensive.

We must make sure that the RTC_DEV_BUSY flag has proper lock semantics,
i.e. that the RTC_DEV_BUSY stores clearing the flag don't get reordered
before the preceeding stores and loads and vice versa.

however wrong usage, as it leaves the mutex locked when returning into

Several of the RTC drivers are exporting binary "nvram" files in sysfs. Such
NVRAM (or on many systems, EEPROM) data is often initialized during system
manufacture to hold data about identity (serial numbers, Ethernet addresses,
etc), configuration, calibration, and so forth.
This patch improves integrity and security of those files:
- Correctly initializes the size in one of the two cases where
that was not yet being done.
- Improves system security/integrity by making this state not
be world-writable by default.
Letting arbitrary userspace code mangle such state by default is at least Not
A Good Thing; and it could sometimes be worse, depending on the particular
data that might be corrupted. (I disregard the paranoiac "don't let anyone
read it either" approach. Anyone storing passwords in such memory doesn't
really care about security.)

The RTC "hctosys" mechanism expects that RTC clock will use UTC, not local
time (e.g. PST). Say so in Kconfig and in the kernel message.
(Strictly speaking, the RTC clock should be tracking the POSIX epoch. That's
not worth going into here. Goofing timezones means clocks are wrong by many
hours; the POSIX-v-UTC differences just cost seconds.)

Currently if rtc_device_register() fails we have an IS_ERR() on
the wrong pointer, which causes this to always be skipped. Fix
this up to actually check the right pointer. The return value
was always correct, even though the check was wrong.

I have a system here that actively relies upon RTC wake alarms, and it
has been failing (again) for a few days when attempting to use the
/sys/class/rtc/rtc?/wakealarm interface.
The old (fixed by Linus) /proc/ interface still works, but I'd like to
get it using the new one.
This patch fixes rtc-cmos to ignore the two upper bits when reading the
BCD mday (day of month) register from CMOS. Some systems (eg. mine)
seem to have the top bit set to "1" for some reason.
The older /proc/ interface ignores the upper bits, and so we should too.

drivers/char/rtc.c allowed RTC_PIE_ON ioctls for non-root users, as long as
the current interval (set via RTC_IRQP_SET) is <= max_user_freq. Allow
RTC_PIE_ON under the same conditions when /dev/rtc* is handled by the rtc
subsystem.

drivers/char/rtc.c exposed a sysctl to change the maximum frequency at
which a non-root user could ask the RTC to generate interrupts (via the
RTC_IRQP_SET ioctl). This value is no longer available under the new RTC
subsystem, so add it to sysfs for each RTC device.
Works for me on x86_64 (both reads and writes), using rtc-cmos.

Some cleanups for the rtc-cmos probe logic:
- Claim i/o ports with request_region() not request_resource(),
for better coexistence betwen platform and pnp bus glues.
- Claim those ports earlier, to help work around procfs bugs
(it allows duplicate names, like /proc/driver/rtc).
- Fix some glitches in cleanup code, notably a cut'n'paste-o
where the i/o port region might not get released during
cleanup after a probe fault.
And some comment clarifications, including noting that this code
must work with PNPBIOS not just PNPACPI..

Fix readback of RTC alarms on platforms which return -1 in
non-hardware-supported RTC alarm fields.
To fill in the missing (-1) values, we grab an RTC timestamp along with the
RTC alarm value, and use the timestamp fields to populate the missing alarm
fields.
To counter field-wrap races (since the timestamp and alarm are not read
together atomically), we read the RTC timestamp both before and after
reading the RTC alarm value, and then check for wrapped fields --> if any
have wrapped, we know we have a possible inconsistency, so we loop and
reread the timestamp and alarm again.
Wrapped fields in the RTC timestamps are an issue because rtc-cmos.c, for
example, also gets/uses an RTC timestamp internally while fetching the RTC
alarm. If our timestamp here wasn't the same (minutes and higher) as what
was used internally there, then we might end up populating the -1 fields
with inconsistent values.
This fixes readbacks from /sys/class/rtc/rtc?/wakealarm, as well as other
code paths which call rtc_read_alarm().

RTC periodic IRQs are only defined to work for 2^N Hz values. This patch
moves that validity check into the infrastructure, so drivers don't need to
check it; and adds kerneldoc for the two interface functions related to
periodic IRQs. (One of which was quite mysterious until its first use was
recently checked in!)

All SH-4 parts have a 4-digit year, while the SH-3 parts typically
only use a 2-digit one. The SH7705, SH7710, and SH7712 SH-3 parts
however opted to extend it to 4-digit and still look and act like
an SH-3 RTC in all other ways.
This adds a capability flag (RTC_CAP_4_DIGIT_YEAR) that these
corner-case CPU subtypes can set in their platform data and cleans
up some of the ifdef mess in the driver as a result.

Currently the rtc driver, rtc-ds1552.c uses an unsigned long to store the
base mmio address of the NVRAM/RTC. This breaks on 32-bit systems with

Currently the rtc driver, rtc-ds1742.c uses an unsigned long to store the
base mmio address of the NVRAM/RTC. This breaks on systems like PowerPC
440, which is a 32-bit core with 36-bit physical addresses: IO on the
system, including the RTC, is typically above the 4GB point, and cannot fit
into an unsigned long.
This patch fixes the problem by replacing the unsigned long with a
resource_size_t. Tested on Ebony (PPC440) (with additional patches to
instantiate the ds1742 platform device appropriately).

The new rtc-m41t80 driver name doesn't match its module name, which
prevents it from properly hotplugging. Since it's new, no platforms yet
depend on that name ... so this patch fixes the driver name to match its
module name, rather than going the other way around with a MODULE_ALIAS().
NOTE: This sort of bug is a new thing to watch out for with new-style I2C
drivers; previously I2C couldn't hotplug.

Some SH-3 parts (SH7720 and SH7705 at least) need to have the
start bit explicitly cleared, as the reset is not enough. This
is safe across all parts, so simply clear the start bit in
the sh_rtc_set_time() path.

This avoids use of the kernel-internal "xtime" variable directly outside
of the actual time-related functions. Instead, use the helper functions
that we already have available to us.
This doesn't actually change any behaviour, but this will allow us to
fix the fact that "xtime" isn't updated very often with CONFIG_NO_HZ
(because much of the realtime information is maintained as separate
offsets to 'xtime'), which has caused interfaces that use xtime directly
to get a time that is out of sync with the real-time clock by up to a
third of a second or so.

This patch adds support for the Simtek STK17TA8 timekeeping chip.
The STK17TA8 is quite similar to the DS1553, but differs in register layout
and in various control bits in the registers. I chose to make this a new
driver to avoid confusion in the code and to not get lost in #ifdefs.

We now read and write the century byte in the max6900 chip. We probably
don't need to do so on Linux-only system, but it's necessary when the chip
is shared by another OS that uses the century byte.

Various people have expressed surprise that their modular RTC drivers don't
seem to work for initializing the system time at boot. To help avoid such
unpleasantness, make the Kconfig text point out that the driver probably
needs to be statically linked.

Add Texas Instruments TWL92330/Menelaus Power Management chip driver. This
includes voltage regulators, Dual slot memory card tranceivers and
real-time clock(RTC).
The support for RTC is integrated with this driver only; it is not separate
module. Passes 'rtctest' on OMAP H4 EVM, other than lack of "periodic"
(1/N second) IRQs. System wakeup alarms (from suspend-to-RAM) work too.
The battery keeps the RTC active over power off, so once you set clock
(rdate/ntpdate/etc, then "hwclock -w") then RTC_HCTOSYS at boot time will
behave as expected.

When we find a ds1337 or ds1339 with the oscillator powered off, turn it
on. If the oscillator fault flag was set, clear it and warn that the clock
needs to be set.
David Brownell: Bugfixes; provide corresponding update for ds1338, and the
core of the fix for ds1340. Use a common warning message ("SET TIME!")
whenever the clock needs to be set after oscillator fault (or oscillator
enable, if fault is not a separate status).

This is a new-style i2c driver for ST M41T80 series RTC chip, derived from
works by Alexander Bigga <ab@mycable.de> who wrote the original
rtc-m41txx.c based on drivers/i2c/chips/m41t00.c driver.
This driver supports M41T8[0-4] and M41ST8[457]. The old m41t00 driver
supports M41T00, M41T81 and M41T85(M41ST85). While the M41T00 chip is now
supported by rtc-ds1307 driver, this driver does not include support for
the chip.

Minor fix to the Kconfig for RTCs: don't display section headers for I2C or
SPI unless they're configured. And depend on SPI_MASTER; having slave
support wouldn't help.

Tested on the AT32AP7000/ATSTK1000. Driver does only suport time, wake up
and a very simple alarm, because of hardware limitations.

Convert rtc-rs5c372 to be a "new style" I2C driver, and update the
Kconfig text to be more complete..
Verified on an OMAP H4 development platform, along with a board
init patch to declare its rv5c387a device.
Only one defconfig -- powerpc/linkstation -- uses this driver; but
several other platforms use it, just without defconfig support.
Such platforms need to be converted so (a) their I2C adapter driver
supports new-style drivers, and (b) board init code declares this
I2C device.

This updates the rtc-ds1307 driver so that converting it to a "new style"
driver (driver model, not legacy i2c model) will involve fewer changes.
- Use pointer to i2c_client almost everywhere, so that it's easy
to let the i2c core create that object;
- Avoid using i2c_client.adapter, since that field is redundant and
thus may go away (same object as i2c_client.dev.parent).
- Extend type enum to include various RTCs this is expected to
work with, and include register support for them.
It also cleans up the support for multiple chip types, and fixes a
glitch that could appear with an un-initialized RTC.

Well, first of all, I don't want to change so many files either.
What I do:
Adding a new parameter "struct bin_attribute *" in the
.read/.write methods for the sysfs binary attributes.
In fact, only the four lines change in fs/sysfs/bin.c and
include/linux/sysfs.h do the real work.
But I have to update all the files that use binary attributes
to make them compatible with the new .read and .write methods.
I'm not sure if I missed any. :(
Why I do this:
For a sysfs attribute, we can get a pointer pointing to the
struct attribute in the .show/.store method,
while we can't do this for the binary attributes.
I don't know why this is different, but this does make it not
so handy to use the binary attributes as the regular ones.
So I think this patch is reasonable. :)
Who benefits from it:
The patch that exposes ACPI tables in sysfs
requires such an improvement.
All the table binary attributes share the same .read method.
Parameter "struct bin_attribute *" is used to get
the table signature and instance number which are used to
distinguish different ACPI table binary attributes.
Without this parameter, we need to offer different .read methods
for different ACPI table binary attributes.
This is impossible as there are various ACPI tables on different
platforms, and we don't know what they are until they are loaded.

sysfs is now completely out of driver/module lifetime game. After
deletion, a sysfs node doesn't access anything outside sysfs proper,
so there's no reason to hold onto the attribute owners. Note that
often the wrong modules were accounted for as owners leading to
accessing removed modules.
This patch kills now unnecessary attribute->owner. Note that with
this change, userland holding a sysfs node does not prevent the
backing module from being unloaded.

Intel Macs (and possibly other machines) provide a PNP entry for the RTC,
but provide no IRQ. As a result the rtc-cmos driver doesn't allow wakeup
alarms. If the RTC is located at the legacy ioport range, assume that it's
on IRQ 8 unless the tables say otherwise.

This fixes a common glitch in how RTC drivers handle two "set alarm" modes,
by getting rid of the surprising/hidden one that was rarely implemented
correctly (and which could expose nonportable hardware-specific behavior).
The glitch comes from the /dev/rtcX logic implementing the legacy
RTC_ALM_SET (limited to 24 hours, needing RTC_AIE_ON) ioctl on top of the
RTC driver call providing access to the newer RTC_WKALM_SET (without those
limitations) by initializing the day/month/year fields to be invalid ...
that second mode.
Now, since few RTC drivers check those fields, and most hardware misbehaves
when faced with invalid date fields, many RTC drivers will set bogus alarm
times on those RTC_ALM_SET code paths. (Several in-tree drivers have that
issue, and I also noticed it with code reviews on several new RTC drivers.)
This patch ensures that RTC drivers never see such invalid alarm fields, by
moving some logic out of rtc-omap into the RTC_ALM_SET code and adding an
explicit check (which will prevent the issue on other code paths).

I finally got around to testing the updated wakeup event hooks for rtc-cmos,
and they follow in two patches:
- Interface update ... when a simple enable_irq_wake() doesn't suffice,
the platform data can hold suspend/resume callback hooks.
- ACPI implementation ... provides callback hooks to do ACPI magic, and
eliminate the legacy /proc/acpi/alarm file.
The interface update could go into 2.6.21, but that's not essential; they
will be NOPs on most PCs, without the ACPI stuff.
I suspect the ACPI folk may have opinions about how to merge that second
patch, and how to obsolete that legacy procfs file. I'd like to see that
merge into 2.6.22 if possible...
As for how to kick it in ... two ways:
- The appended "rtcwake" program; updated since the last time it was
posted, it deals much better with timezones and DST.
- Write the /sys/class/rtc/.../wakealarm file, then go to sleep.
For some reason RTC wake from "swsusp" stopped working on a system where
it previously worked; the alarm setting appears to get clobbered. But
on the bright side, RTC wake from "standby" worked on a system that had
never been able to resume from that state before ... IDEACPI is my guess
as to why it finally started to work. It's the old "two steps forward,
one step back" dance, I guess.

This patch:
Make rtc-cmos do the relevant magic so this RTC can wake the system from a
sleep state. That magic comes in two basic flavors:
- Straightforward: enable_irq_wake(), the way it'd work on most SOC chips;
or generally with system sleep states which don't disable core IRQ logic.
- Roundabout, using non-IRQ platform hooks. This is needed with ACPI and
one almost-clone chip which uses a special wakeup-only alarm. (That's
the RTC used on Footbridge boards, FWIW, which don't do PM in Linux.)
A separate patch implements those hooks for ACPI platforms, so that rtc_cmos
can issue system wakeup events (and its sysfs "wakealarm" attribute works on
at least some systems).

Fix a goof in the revised classdev support for RTCs: make sure the /dev
node info is ready before the device is registered, not after. Otherwise
the /sys/class/rtc/rtcN/dev attribute won't be created and then udev won't
have the information it needs to create the /dev/rtcN node.

RTC class suspend/resume support, re-initializing the system clock on resume
from the clock used to initialize it at boot time.
- The reinit-on-resume is hooked to the existing RTC_HCTOSYS config
option, on the grounds that a clock good enough for init must also
be good enough for re-init.
- Inlining a version of the code used by ARM, to save and restore the
delta between a selected RTC and the current system wall-clock time.
- Removes calls to that ARM code from AT91, OMAP1, and S3C RTCs. This
means that systems using those RTCs across suspend/resume will likely
want to change their kernel configs to enable RTC_HCTOSYS.
If HCTOSYS isn't using a second RTC (with battery?), this changes the
system's initial date from Jan 1970 to the epoch this hardware uses:
1998 for AT91, 2000 for OMAP1 (assuming no split power mode), etc.
This goes on top of the patch series removing "struct class_device" usage
from the RTC framework. That's all needed for class suspend()/resume().

This simplifies the RTC procfs support by removing the class_interface that
hooks it into the rtc core. If it's configured, then sysfs support is now
part of the RTC core, and is never a separate module.
It also removes the class_interface hook, now that its last remaining user is
gone. (That API is usable only with a "struct class_device".)
It's another step towards being able to remove "struct class_device".

Lockdep reported cmos_suspend() and cmos_resume() calling rtc_update_irq()
with IRQs enabled; not allowed.
Also fix problems seen on some hardware, whereby false alarm IRQs could be
reported (primarily to userspace); and update two comments to match changes
in ACPI. Those make up most of this patch, by volume.

Replace the I2C bus address, as per drivers/acorn/char/pcf8583.c.
Also, since this driver also contains Acorn RiscPC specific code
for obtaining the current year from the SRAM (and updating the
platform specific checksum when writing new data back) this is
NOT a platform independent driver.
Document it as such, and update the dependencies to reflect this
fact.

Fix an oops on the rtc_device_unregister() path by waiting until the last
moment before nulling the rtc->ops vector. Fix some potential oopses by
having the rtc_class_open()/rtc_class_close() interface increase the RTC's
reference count while an RTC handle is available outside the RTC framework.

Various bug fixes to the at91rm9200 RTC:
- alarm: setalarm() should pay attention to the "enabled" flag
- init: cleaner handling of the wakeup flags, which cpu init should
really have set up. Doing it here is just a workaround.
- linkage: since the at91_rtc driver probe() routine is in the init
section, it should use platform_driver_probe() instead of leaving
that pointer around in the driver struct after init section removal.
- linkage: likewise, remove() belongs in the exit section.
Among other things, the init and alarm changes ensure that this driver
handles the new sysfs "wakealarm" attribute properly.

Some rtc-sa1100 bugfixes:
- The read_alarm() method reports the rtc_wkalrm.enabled field properly.
This patch is already in the handhelds.org tree.
- And the set_alarm() method now handles that flag correctly, rather than
making mismatched {en,dis}able_irq_wake() calls, which trigger runtime
warning messages. (Those calls are best made in suspend/resume methods.)
Note that while this SA1100/PXA RTC is fully capable of waking those ARM
processors from sleep states, that mechanism isn't properly supported on
either processor family, or in this driver. Some boards have board-specific
PM glue providing partial workarounds for the weak generic PM support.

Many struct file_operations in the kernel can be "const". Marking them const
moves these to the .rodata section, which avoids false sharing with potential
dirty data. In addition it'll catch accidental writes at compile time to
these shared resources.

This adds a new "wakealarm" sysfs attribute to RTC class devices which support
alarm operations and are wakeup-capable:
- It reads as either empty, or the scheduled alarm time as seconds
since the POSIX epoch. (That time may already have passed, since
nothing currently enforces one-shot alarm semantics.)
- It can be written with an alarm time in the future, again seconds
since the POSIX epoch, which enables the alarm.
- It can be written with an alarm time not in the future (such as 0,
the start of the POSIX epoch) to disable the alarm.
Usage examples (some need GNU date) after "cd /sys/class/rtc/rtcN":
alarm after 10 minutes:

alarm tuesday evening 10pm:
# date -d '10pm tuesday' "+%s" > wakealarm
disable alarm:

This resembles the /proc/acpi/alarm file in that nothing happens when the
alarm triggers ... except possibly waking the system from sleep. It's also
like that in a nasty way: not much can be done to prevent one task from
clobbering another task's alarm settings.
It differs from that file in that there's no in-kernel date parser.
Note that a few RTCs ignore rtc_wkalrm.enabled when setting alarms, or aren't
set up correctly, so they won't yet behave with this attribute.

This is an "RTC framework" driver for the "CMOS" RTCs which are standard on
PCs and some other platforms. That's MC146818 compatible silicon.
Advantages of this vs. drivers/char/rtc.c (use one _or_ the other, only
one will be able to claim the RTC irq) include:
- This leverages both the new RTC framework and the driver model; both
PNPACPI and platform device modes are supported. (A separate patch
creates a platform device on PCs where PNPACPI isn't configured.)
- It supports common extensions like longer alarms. (A separate patch
exports that information from ACPI through platform_data.)
- Likewise, system wakeup events use "real driver model support", with
policy control via sysfs "wakeup" attributes and and using normal rtc
ioctls to manage wakeup. (Patch in the works. The ACPI hooks are
known; /proc/acpi/alarm can vanish. Making it work with EFI will
be a minor challenge to someone with e.g. a MiniMac.)
It's not yet been tested on non-x86 systems, without ACPI, or with HPET.
And the RTC framework will surely have teething pains on "mainstream"
PC-based systems (though must embedded Linux systems use it heavily), not
limited to sorting out the "/dev/rtc0" issue (udev easily tweaked). Also,
the ALSA rtctimer code doesn't use the new RTC API.
Otherwise, this should be a no-known-regressions replacement for the old
drivers/char/rtc.c driver, and should help the non-embedded distros (and
the new timekeeping code) start to switch to the framework.
Note also that any systems using "rtc-m48t86" are candidates to switch over
to this more functional driver; the platform data is different, and the way
bytes are read is different, but otherwise those chips should be compatible.

The usage of the century bit was inverted on 2.6.19 following to PCF8563's
description, but it was not match to usage suggested by RTC8564's
datasheet. Anyway what MO_C=1 means can vary on each platform. This patch
is to detect its polarity in get_datetime routine. The default value of
c_polarity is 0 (MO_C=1 means 19xx) so that this patch does not change
current behavior even if get_datetime was not called before set_datetime.

through a work_struct...)
This uses the "method 3" register reads, but notes that it's done
to work around an evident i2c adapter driver bug.

Fix a glitch in the procfs dumping of whether the alarm IRQ is enabled: use
the traditional name (from drivers/char/rtc.c and many other places) of
"alarm_IRQ", not "alrm_wakeup" (which didn't even match the efirtc code, which
originated that reporting API).
Also, update a few of the RTC drivers to stop providing that duplicate status,
and/or to expose it properly when reporting the alarm state. We really don't
want every RTC driver doing their own thing here...

This adds alarm support for the RTC_ALM_SET, RTC_ALM_READ,
RTC_WKALM_SET and RTC_WKALM_RD operations to rtc-sh.
The only unusual part is the handling of the alarm interrupt. If you
clear the alarm flag (AF) while the time in the RTC still matches the
time in the alarm registers than AF is immediately re-set, and if the
alarm interrupt (AIE) is still enabled then it re-triggers. I was
originally getting around 20k+ interrupts generated during the second
when the RTC and alarm registers matches.
The solution I've used is to clear AIE when the alarm goes off and
then use the carry interrupt to re-enabled it. The carry interrupt
will check AF and re-enabled AIE if it's clear. If AF is not clear
it'll clear it and then the check will be repeated next carry
interrupt. This a bit in rtc structure that indicates that it's
waiting to have AIE re-enabled so it doesn't turn it on when it
wasn't enabled anyway.

The RMONCNT register, which holds the month in the RTC, takes a value
between 1 and 12 while the tm_mon field in the time structures takes
a value between 0 and 11. This wasn't being taken into account in
rtc-sh resulting in the month being out by one.
eg, on my board during boot the RTC is set to:

The new Atmel AT91SAM9261 and AT91SAM9260 processors do not have the
internal RTC peripheral. This RTC driver is therefore
AT91RM9200-specific.
This patch renames rtc-at91.c to rtc-at91rm9200.c, and changes the name
of the configuration option.

Add rtc_merge_alarm(), which can be used by rtc drivers to turn a partially
specified alarm expiry (i.e. most significant fields set to -1, as with the
RTC_ALM_SET ioctl()) into a fully specified expiry.
If the most significant specified field is earlier than the current time, the

The real time clocks ds1742 and ds1743 differs only in the size of the
nvram. This patch changes the existing ds1742 driver to support also
ds1743. The main change is that the nvram size is determined from the
resource attached to the device.
The patch have benefitted from suggestions from Atsushi Nemeto, who is the
author of the ds1742 driver.

According to the datasheet rs5c372 supports three different methods for
reading register values. Change from method #1 to method #3, since method #3
is the only one that works on Thecus N2100 board with this RTC.

This creates a new RTC-framework driver for the RTC/calendar module found
in various OMAP1 chips. (OMAP2 and OMAP3 use external RTCs, like those in
TI's multifunction PM companion chips.) It's been in the Linux-OMAP tree
for several months now, and other trees before that, so it's quite stable.
The most notable issue is that the OMAP IRQ code doesn't yet support the
RTC IRQ as a wakeup event. Once that's fixed, a patch will be needed.

I got a lockdep warning when running "rtctest" so I though it'd be good
to see what was up.
- The warning was for rtc->irq_task_lock, gotten from rtc_update_irq()
by irq handlerss ... but in a handful of other cases, grabbed without
blocking IRQs.
- Some callers to rtc_update_irq() were not ensuring IRQs were blocked,
yet the routine expects that; make sure all callers block IRQs.
It would appear that RTC API tests haven't been part of anyone's kernel
regression test suite recently, at least not with lockdep running.

The RTC framework has an irq_set_freq() method that should be used to manage
the periodic IRQ frequency, but the current ioctl logic doesn't know how to do
that. This patch teaches it how.
This means that drivers implementing irq_set_freq() will automatically support
RTC_IRQP_{READ,SET} ioctls; that logic doesn't need duplication within the
driver.

Maintain a per-CPU global "struct pt_regs *" variable which can be used instead
of passing regs around manually through all ~1800 interrupt handlers in the
Linux kernel.
The regs pointer is used in few places, but it potentially costs both stack
space and code to pass it around. On the FRV arch, removing the regs parameter
from all the genirq function results in a 20% speed up of the IRQ exit path
(ie: from leaving timer_interrupt() to leaving do_IRQ()).
Where appropriate, an arch may override the generic storage facility and do
something different with the variable. On FRV, for instance, the address is
maintained in GR28 at all times inside the kernel as part of general exception
handling.
Having looked over the code, it appears that the parameter may be handed down
through up to twenty or so layers of functions. Consider a USB character
device attached to a USB hub, attached to a USB controller that posts its
interrupts through a cascaded auxiliary interrupt controller. A character
device driver may want to pass regs to the sysrq handler through the input
layer which adds another few layers of parameter passing.
I've build this code with allyesconfig for x86_64 and i386. I've runtested the
main part of the code on FRV and i386, though I can't test most of the drivers.
I've also done partial conversion for powerpc and MIPS - these at least compile
with minimal configurations.
This will affect all archs. Mostly the changes should be relatively easy.
Take do_IRQ(), store the regs pointer at the beginning, saving the old one:
struct pt_regs *old_regs = set_irq_regs(regs);
And put the old one back at the end:
set_irq_regs(old_regs);
Don't pass regs through to generic_handle_irq() or __do_IRQ().
In timer_interrupt(), this sort of change will be necessary:
- update_process_times(user_mode(regs));
- profile_tick(CPU_PROFILING, regs);
+ update_process_times(user_mode(get_irq_regs()));
+ profile_tick(CPU_PROFILING);
I'd like to move update_process_times()'s use of get_irq_regs() into itself,
except that i386, alone of the archs, uses something other than user_mode().
Some notes on the interrupt handling in the drivers:
(*) input_dev() is now gone entirely. The regs pointer is no longer stored in
the input_dev struct.
(*) finish_unlinks() in drivers/usb/host/ohci-q.c needs checking. It does
something different depending on whether it's been supplied with a regs
pointer or not.
(*) Various IRQ handler function pointers have been moved to type
irq_handler_t.

This lets the at91rm9200 RTC alarm be a system wakeup irq, according to the
setting of /sys/devices/platform/at91_rtc/power/wakeup. User code can set the
alarm, put the system into a low power mode, and then rely on it waking up no
later than the specified moment.

The rtc_is_valid_tm() routine needs to treat some of the fields it checks as
unsigned, to prevent wrongly accepting invalid rtc_time structs; this is the
same approach used elsewhere in the RTC code for such tests.
Conversely, rtc_proc_show() is missing one invalid-day-of-month test that
rtc_is_valid_tm() makes: there is no day zero.

This makes RTC core components use "subsys_init" instead of "module_init", as
appropriate for subsystem infrastructure. This is mostly useful for
statically linking drivers in other parts of the tree that may provide an RTC
interface as a secondary functionality (e.g. part of a multifunction chip);
they won't need to worry so much about drivers/Makefile link order.

Small updates to make the RTC class Kconfig text be more informative. This
should help folk used to the drivers/char/rtc.c support, or a single RTC, be
slightly less surprised by the differences.
Also, adds a new RTC_DEBUG option to predefine DEBUG in the framework and its
drivers, while debugging. That's getting to be a standard idiom, and it's
pretty useful.

The century bit PCF8563_MO_C in the month register is misinterpreted. It
is set to 1 for the 20th century and 0 for 21th, and the driver is

If the chip detected "oscillator stop" condition, show an warning message.
And initialize it with the Epoch time instead of leaving it with unknown
date/time.
