Javier González cc4f5ba1fb lightnvm: pblk: ensure kthread alloc. before kicking it
When creating the write thread, ensure that the kthread has been created
before initializing the timer responsible from kicking it. Otherwise, if
the kthread creation fails or gets killed from used space, we risk
kicking an empty thread structure.

Also, since the kthread creation can be interrupted form user space,
adapt the error path to not report an error when this happens, since it
is intentional that the instance creation is aborted.

Javier González 8f554597e0 lightnvm: pblk: do not log recovery read errors
On scan recovery, reads can fail. This happens because the first page
for each line is read in order to determined if the line has been used
(and thus needs to be recovered), or not. This can lead to "empty page"
read errors.

Since these errors are normal, do not log them, as they are confusing
when reviewing the logs.

Javier González e53927393b lightnvm: set target over-provision on create ioctl
Allow to set the over-provision percentage on target creation. In case
that the value is not provided, fall back to the default value set by
the target.

In pblk, set the default OP to 11% of the total size of the device

Javier González a7689938ef lightnvm: pblk: use exact free block counter in RL
Until now, pblk's rate-limiter has used a heuristic to reserve space for
GC I/O given that the over-provision area was fixed.

In preparation for allowing to define the over-provision area on target
creation, define a dedicated free_block counter in the rate-limiter to
track the number of blocks being used for user data.

Hans Holmberg aed49e195a lightnvm: pblk: remove pblk_gc_stop
pblk_gc_stop just sets pblk->gc->gc_active to zero, ignoring
the flush parameter. This is plain confusing, so remove the
function and set the gc active flag at the call points instead.

Hans Holmberg b36bbf9d4f lightnvm: pblk: prevent premature sync point resets
Unless we protect flush pointer updates with a lock, we risk
resetting new flush points before we've synced all sectors
up to that point.

This patch protects new flush points with the same spin lock
that is being held when advancing the sync pointer and
resetting completed flush points.

Hans Holmberg 06bc072b3f lightnvm: pblk: refactor emeta consistency check
Currently pblk_recov_get_lba list does two separate things:
it checks the consistency of the emeta and extracts the lba list.

This patch separates the consistency check to make the code easier
to read and to prepare for version checks of the line emeta
persistent data format version.

Javier González bd77b23b40 lightnvm: guarantee target unique name across devs.
Until now, target unique naming is only guaranteed per device. This is
ok from a lightnvm perspective, but not from a sysfs one, since groups
will collide regardless of the underlying device.

Check that names are unique across all lightnvm-capable devices.

Greg Kroah-Hartman b24413180f License cleanup: add SPDX GPL-2.0 license identifier to files with no license
Many source files in the tree are missing licensing information, which
makes it harder for compliance tools to determine the correct license.

By default all files without license information are under the default
license of the kernel, which is GPL version 2.

Update the files which contain no license information with the 'GPL-2.0'
SPDX license identifier.  The SPDX identifier is a legally binding
shorthand, which can be used instead of the full boiler plate text.

This patch is based on work done by Thomas Gleixner and Kate Stewart and
Philippe Ombredanne.

How this work was done:

Patches were generated and checked against linux-4.14-rc6 for a subset of
the use cases:
 - file had no licensing information it it.
 - file was a */uapi/* one with no licensing information in it,
 - file was a */uapi/* one with existing licensing information,

Further patches will be generated in subsequent months to fix up cases
where non-standard license headers were used, and references to license
had to be inferred by heuristics based on keywords.

The analysis to determine which SPDX License Identifier to be applied to
a file was done in a spreadsheet of side by side results from of the
output of two independent scanners (ScanCode & Windriver) producing SPDX
tag:value files created by Philippe Ombredanne.  Philippe prepared the
base worksheet, and did an initial spot review of a few 1000 files.

The 4.13 kernel was the starting point of the analysis with 60,537 files
assessed.  Kate Stewart did a file by file comparison of the scanner
results in the spreadsheet to determine which SPDX license identifier(s)
to be applied to the file. She confirmed any determination that was not
immediately clear with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation.

Criteria used to select files for SPDX license identifier tagging was:
 - Files considered eligible had to be source code files.
 - Make and config files were included as candidates if they contained >5
   lines of source
 - File already had some variant of a license header in it (even if <5
   lines).

All documentation files were explicitly excluded.

The following heuristics were used to determine which SPDX license
identifiers to apply.

 - when both scanners couldn't find any license traces, file was
   considered to have no license information in it, and the top level
   COPYING file license applied.

   For non */uapi/* files that summary was:

   and resulted in the first patch in this series.

   and that resulted in the third patch in this series.

 - when the two scanners agreed on the detected license(s), that became
   the concluded license(s).

 - when there was disagreement between the two scanners (one detected a
   license but the other didn't, or they both detected different
   licenses) a manual inspection of the file occurred.

 - In most cases a manual inspection of the information in the file
   resulted in a clear resolution of the license that should apply (and
   which scanner probably needed to revisit its heuristics).

 - When it was not immediately clear, the license identifier was
   confirmed with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation.

 - If there was any question as to the appropriate license identifier,
   the file was flagged for further research and to be revisited later
   in time.

In total, over 70 hours of logged manual review was done on the
spreadsheet to determine the SPDX license identifiers to apply to the
source files by Kate, Philippe, Thomas and, in some cases, confirmation
by lawyers working with the Linux Foundation.

Kate also obtained a third independent scan of the 4.13 code base from
FOSSology, and compared selected files where the other two scanners
disagreed against that SPDX file, to see if there was new insights.  The
Windriver scanner is based on an older version of FOSSology in part, so
they are related.

Thomas did random spot checks in about 500 files from the spreadsheets
for the uapi headers and agreed with SPDX license identifier in the
files he inspected. For the non-uapi files Thomas did random spot checks
in about 15000 files.

In initial set of patches against 4.14-rc6, 3 files were found to have
copy/paste license identifier errors, and have been fixed to reflect the
correct identifier.

Additionally Philippe spent 10 hours this week doing a detailed manual
inspection and review of the 12,461 patched files from the initial patch
version early this week with:
 - a full scancode scan run, collecting the matched texts, detected
   license ids and scores
 - reviewing anything where there was a license detected (about 500+
   files) to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct
 - reviewing anything where there was no detection but the patch license
   was not GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note to ensure that the applied
   SPDX license was correct

This produced a worksheet with 20 files needing minor correction.  This
worksheet was then exported into 3 different .csv files for the
different types of files to be modified.

These .csv files were then reviewed by Greg.  Thomas wrote a script to
parse the csv files and add the proper SPDX tag to the file, in the
format that the file expected.  This script was further refined by Greg
based on the output to detect more types of files automatically and to
distinguish between header and source .c files (which need different
comment types.)  Finally Greg ran the script using the .csv files to
generate the patches.

Javier González 8da10cce7c lightnvm: pblk: avoid being reported as hung on rated GC
The amount of GC I/O on the write buffer is managed by the rate-limiter,
which is calculated as a function of the number of available free
blocks. When reaching the stable point, we risk having scheduled more
I/Os for GC than are allowed on the write buffer. This would result on
the GC semaphore balancing the outstanding read GC I/Os to be reported
as "hung", though the behavior is normal.

Solve this by allowing to schedule when we detect that the read GC path
is not moving forward.

Hans Holmberg 28bd109411 lightnvm: pblk: remove spinlock when freeing line metadata
Lockdep complains about being in atomic context while freeing line
metadata - and rightly so as we take a spinlock and end up calling
vfree that might sleep(in pblk_mfree).

There is no need for holding the line manager free_lock while
freeing line metadata as the pipeline as stopped, so remove the lock.

Hans Holmberg d6b992f7ab lightnvm: pblk: gc all lines in the pipeline before exit
Finish garbage collect of the lines that are in the gc pipeline
before exiting. Ensure that all lines already in in the pipeline
goes through, from read to write.

Do this by keeping track of how many lines are in the pipeline
and waiting for that number to reach zero before exiting the gc
reader task.

Since we're adding a new gc line counter, change the name of
inflight_gc to read_inflight_gc to make the distinction clear.

Hans Holmberg c55861926a lightnvm: pblk: add l2p crc debug printouts
Print the CRC of the logical-to-physical mapping during exit and
after recovering the L2P table to facilitate detection of meta
data corruption/recovery issues.

The CRC printed after recovery should match the CRC printed during
the previous exit - if it doesn't this indicates that either the meta

Hans Holmberg 75610cd974 lightnvm: pblk: consider bad sectors in emeta during recovery
When recovering lines we need to consider that bad blocks in a line
affect the emeta area size.

Previously it was assumed that the emeta area would grow by the
number of sectors per page * number of bad blocks in the line.

This assumption is not correct - the number of "extra" pages that are
consumed could be both smaller (depending on emeta size) and bigger
(depending on the placement of the bad blocks).

Fix this by calculating the emeta start by iterating backwards
through the line, skipping ppas that map to bad blocks.

Also fix the data types used for ppa indices/counts in
pblk_recov_l2p_from_emeta - we should use u64.

Javier González 21d2287119 lightnvm: pblk: enable 1 LUN configuration
Metadata I/Os are scheduled to minimize their impact on user data I/Os.
When there are enough LUNs instantiated (i.e., enough bandwidth), it is
easy to interleave metadata and data one after the other so that
metadata I/Os are the ones being blocked and not vice-versa.

We do this by calculating the distance between the I/Os in terms of the
LUNs that are not in used, and selecting a free LUN that satisfies a
the simple heuristic that metadata is scheduled behind. The per-LUN
semaphores guarantee consistency. This works fine on >1 LUN
configuration. However, when a single LUN is instantiated, this design
leads to a deadlock, where metadata waits to be scheduled on a free LUN.

This patch implements the 1 LUN case by simply scheduling the metadada
I/O after the data I/O. In the process, we refactor the way a line is
replaced to ensure that metadata writes are submitted after data writes
in order to guarantee block sequentiality. Note that, since there is
only one LUN, both I/Os will block each other by design. However, such
configuration only pursues tight read latencies, not write bandwidth.

per I/O granurality.

As part of pblk's recovery scheme, we store the lba mapped to each
physical sector on the device's out-of-bound (OOB) area.

On the read path, we can use this information to validate that the data
being delivered to the upper layers corresponds to the lba being
requested. The cost of this check is an extra copy on the DMA region on
the device and an extra comparison in the host, given that (i) the OOB
area is being read together with the data in the media, and (ii) the DMA
region allocated for the ppa list can be reused for the metadata stored
on the OOB area.

code readability.

When a line is selected for recycling by the garbage collector (GC), the
line state changes and the invalid bitmap is frozen, preventing
invalidations from happening. Throughout the GC, the L2P map is checked
to verify that not data being recycled has been updated. The last check
is done before the new map is being stored on the L2P table. Though
this algorithm works, it requires a number of corner cases to be checked
each time the L2P table is being updated. This complicates readability
and is error prone in case that the recycling algorithm is modified.

Instead, this patch makes the invalid bitmap accessible even when the
line is being recycled. When recycled data is being remapped, it is
enough to check the invalid bitmap for the line before updating the L2P
table.

In pblk, we have a mempool to allocate a generic structure that we
pass along workqueues. This is heavily used in the GC path in order
to have enough inflight reads and fully utilize the GC bandwidth.

However, the current GC path copies data to the host memory and puts it
back into the write buffer. This requires a vmalloc allocation for the
data and a memory copy. Thus, guaranteeing the allocation by using a
mempool for the structure in itself does not give us much. Until we
implement support for vector copy to avoid moving data through the host,
just allocate the workqueue structure using kmalloc.

This allows us to have a much smaller mempool.

Javier González bd43241768 lightnvm: pblk: fix min size for page mempool
pblk uses an internal page mempool for allocating pages on internal
bios. The main two users of this memory pool are partial reads (reads
with some sectors in cache and some on media) and padded writes, which
need to add dummy pages to an existing bio already containing valid
data (and with a large enough bioset allocated). In both cases, the
maximum number of pages per bio is defined by the maximum number of
physical sectors supported by the underlying device.

This patch fixes a bad mempool allocation, where the min_nr of elements
on the pool was fixed (to 16), which is lower than the maximum number
of sectors supported by NVMe (as of the time for this patch). Instead,
use the maximum number of allowed sectors reported by the device.

Instead, data on the write buffer is flushed and the bio is completed on

this bad free was that internal bios not containing data (only a flush)
were not being completed.

Ideally removal should return -EBUSY as block device is mounted after
formatting.  This patch tries to address this checking if whole device
or any partition of it already mounted or not before removal.

Whole device is checked using "bd_super" member of block device.  This
member is always set once block device has been mounted using a
filesystem.  Another member "bd_part_count" takes care of checking any
if any partitions are under use.  "bd_part_count" is only updated
under locks when partitions are opened or closed (first open and last
release).  This at least does take care sending -EBUSY if removal is
being attempted while whole block device or any partition is mounted.

Javier González 75cb8e939c lightnvm: pblk: advance bio according to lba index
When a lba either hits the cache or corresponds to an empty entry in the
L2P table, we need to advance the bio according to the position in which
the lba is located. Otherwise, we will copy data in the wrong page, thus
causing data corruption for the application.

In case of a cache hit, we assumed that bio->bi_iter.bi_idx would
contain the correct index, but this is no necessarily true. Instead, use
the local bio advance counter and iterator. This guarantees that lbas
hitting the cache are copied into the right bv_page.

In case of an empty L2P entry, we omitted to advance the bio. In the
cases when the same I/O also contains a cache hit, data corresponding
to this lba will be copied to the wrong bv_page. Fix this by advancing
the bio as we do in the case of a cache hit.

Javier González 076984669d lightnvm: pblk: verify that cache read is still valid
When a read is directed to the cache, we risk that the lba has been
updated during the time we made the L2P table lookup and the time we are
actually reading form the cache. We intentionally not hold the L2P lock
not to block other threads.

While strict ordering is not a guarantee at this level (unless REQ_FLUSH
has been previously issued), we have experience that some databases that
have recently implemented direct I/O support, issue metadata reads very
close to the writes, without issuing a fsync in the middle. An easy way
to support them while they is to make an extra effort and check the L2P
map right before reading the cache.

Javier González 588726d3ec lightnvm: pblk: fail gracefully on irrec. error
Due to user writes being decoupled from media writes because of the need
of an intermediate write buffer, irrecoverable media write errors lead
to pblk stalling; user writes fill up the buffer and end up in an
infinite retry loop.

In order to let user writes fail gracefully, it is necessary for pblk to
keep track of its own internal state and prevent further writes from
being placed into the write buffer.

This patch implements a state machine to keep track of internal errors
and, in case of failure, fail further user writes in an standard way.
Depending on the type of error, pblk will do its best to persist
buffered writes (which are already acknowledged) and close down on a
graceful manner. This way, data might be recovered by re-instantiating
pblk. Such state machine paves out the way for a state-based FTL log.

Javier González b20ba1bc74 lightnvm: pblk: redesign GC algorithm
At the moment, in order to get enough read parallelism, we have recycled
several lines at the same time. This approach has proven not to work
well when reaching capacity, since we end up mixing valid data from all
lines, thus not maintaining a sustainable free/recycled line ratio.

The new design, relies on a two level workqueue mechanism. In the first
level, we read the metadata for a number of lines based on the GC list
they reside on (this is governed by the number of valid sectors in each
line). In the second level, we recycle a single line at a time. Here, we
issue reads in parallel, while a single GC write thread places data in
the write buffer. This design allows to (i) only move data from one line
at a time, thus maintaining a sane free/recycled ration and (ii)
maintain the GC writer busy with recycled data.

At the moment, we separate the closed lines on three different list
based on their number of valid sectors. GC recycles lines from each list
based on capacity. Lines from each list are taken in a FIFO fashion.

Since the number of lines is limited (it corresponds to the number of
blocks in a LUN, which is somewhere between 1000-2000), we can afford
scanning the lists to choose the optimal line to be recycled. This helps
specially in lines with a high number of valid sectors.

If the number of blocks per LUN increases, we will consider a more
efficient policy.

Javier González dd2a434373 lightnvm: pblk: sched. metadata on write thread
At the moment, line metadata is persisted on a separate work queue, that
is kicked each time that a line is closed. The assumption when designing
this was that freeing the write thread from creating a new write request
was better than the potential impact of writes colliding on the media
(user I/O and metadata I/O). Experimentation has proven that this
assumption is wrong; collision can cause up to 25% of bandwidth and
introduce long tail latencies on the write thread, which potentially
cause user write threads to spend more time spinning to get a free entry
on the write buffer.

This patch moves the metadata logic to the write thread. When a line is
closed, remaining metadata is written in memory and is placed on a
metadata queue. The write thread then takes the metadata corresponding
to the previous line, creates the write request and schedules it to
minimize collisions on the media. Using this approach, we see that we
can saturate the media's bandwidth, which helps reducing both write
latencies and the spinning time for user writer threads.

Erase I/Os are scheduled with the following goals in mind: (i) minimize
LUNs collisions with write I/Os, and (ii) even out the price of erasing
on every write, instead of putting all the burden on when garbage
collection runs. This works well on the current design, but is specific
to the default mapping algorithm.

This patch generalizes the erase path so that other mapping algorithms
can select an arbitrary line to be erased instead. It also gets rid of
the erase semaphore since it creates jittering for user writes.

pblk_submit_read() uses bio_clone_bioset() but doesn't change the
io_vec, so bio_clone_fast() is a better choice.

It also uses fs_bio_set which is intended for filesystems.  Using it
in a device driver can deadlock.
So allocate a new bioset, and and use bio_clone_fast().

Javier González a44f53faf4 lightnvm: pblk: fix erase counters on error fail
When block erases fail, these blocks are marked bad. The number of valid
blocks in the line was not updated, which could cause an infinite loop
on the erase path.

Fix this atomic counter and, in order to avoid taking an irq lock on the
interrupt context, make the erase counters atomic too.

Also, in the case that a significant number of blocks become bad in a
line, the result is the double shared metadata buffer (emeta) to stop
the pipeline until all metadata is flushed to the media. Increase the
number of metadata lines from 2 to 4 to avoid this case.

Reading from ADDR_EMPTY is out of bounds.  The current code generates a

This is a static checker fix, and perhaps not a real bug.  The static
checker thinks that nr_secs could be negative.  It would result in
zeroing more memory than intended.  Anyway, even if it's not a bug,
changing this variable to unsigned makes the code easier to audit.

Rakesh Pandit 8d77bb8276 lightnvm: propagate pblk_init return to userspace
From userspace calling ioctl(NVM_DEV_CREATE) was returning ENOMEM for
invalid arguments even though pblk (pblk_init) was returning correctly
-EINVAL to nvm_create_tgt inside core.  This patch propagates the
correct return value to userspace.

Because pblk was introduced recently this only needs to go in 4.12.

Javier González a4bd217b43 lightnvm: physical block device (pblk) target
This patch introduces pblk, a host-side translation layer for
Open-Channel SSDs to expose them like block devices. The translation
layer allows data placement decisions, and I/O scheduling to be
managed by the host, enabling users to optimize the SSD for their
specific workloads.

An open-channel SSD has a set of LUNs (parallel units) and a
collection of blocks. Each block can be read in any order, but
writes must be sequential. Writes may also fail, and if a block
requires it, must also be reset before new writes can be
applied.

To manage the constraints, pblk maintains a logical to
physical address (L2P) table,  write cache, garbage
collection logic, recovery scheme, and logic to rate-limit
user I/Os versus garbage collection I/Os.

The L2P table is fully-associative and manages sectors at a
4KB granularity. Pblk stores the L2P table in two places, in
the out-of-band area of the media and on the last page of a
line. In the cause of a power failure, pblk will perform a
scan to recover the L2P table.

The user data is organized into lines. A line is data
striped across blocks and LUNs. The lines enable the host to
reduce the amount of metadata to maintain besides the user
data and makes it easier to implement RAID or erasure coding
in the future.

pblk implements multi-tenant support and can be instantiated
multiple times on the same drive. Each instance owns a
portion of the SSD - both regarding I/O bandwidth and
capacity - providing I/O isolation for each case.

Finally, pblk also exposes a sysfs interface that allows
user-space to peek into the internals of pblk. The interface
is available at /dev/block/*/pblk/ where * is the block
device name exposed.

Target initialization has two responsibilities: creating the target
partition and instantiating the target. This patch enables to create a
factory partition (e.g., do not trigger recovery on the given target).
This is useful for target development and for being able to restore the

First in the target clean routine, and then next in the nvm_tgt_create
error function. Make sure that it is only cleared once by extending

ignored when cleaning up a successful initialized target.

NeilBrown b0e0306ce1 lightnvm: don't check for failure from mempool_alloc()
mempool_alloc() cannot fail if the gfp flags allow it to
sleep, and both GFP_KERNEL and GFP_NOIO allows for sleeping.

Until now erases have been submitted as synchronous commands through a
dedicated erase function. In order to enable targets implementing
asynchronous erases, refactor the erase path so that it uses the normal
async I/O submission functions. If a target requires sync I/O, it can

In order to register through the sysfs interface, a driver needs to know
its kobject. On a disk structure, this happens when the partition
information is added (device_add_disk), which for lightnvm takes place
after the target has been initialized. This means that on target
initialization, the kboject has not been created yet.

This patch adds a target function to let targets initialize their own
kboject as a child of the disk kobject.

Going from target specific ppa addresses to device was accomplished by
first converting target to generic ppa addresses and generic to device
addresses. The conversion was either open-coded or used the built-in
nvm_trans_* and nvm_map_* functions for conversion. Simplify the
interface and cleanup the calls to provide clean functions that now
either take a list of ppas or a nvm_rq, and is exposed through:

 void nvm_ppa_* - target to/from device with a list of PPAs,
 void nvm_rq_* - target to/from device with a nvm_rq.

In order to naturally support multi-target instances on an Open-Channel
SSD, targets should own the LUNs they get blocks from and manage
provisioning internally. This is done in several steps.

Since targets own the LUNs the are instantiated on top of and manage the
free block list internally, there is no need for a LUN abstraction in
the media manager. LUNs are intrinsically managed as in the physical
layout (ch:0,lun:0, ..., ch:0,lun:n, ch:1,lun:0, ch:1,lun:n, ...,
ch:m,lun:0, ch:m,lun:n) and given to the targets based on the target
creation ioctl. This simplifies LUN management and clears the path for a
partition manager to sit directly underneath LightNVM targets.

Javier González 8176117b82 lightnvm: manage lun partitions internally in mm
LUNs are exclusively owned by targets implementing a block device FTL.
Doing this reservation requires at the moment a 2-way callback gennvm
<-> target. The reason behind this is that LUNs were not assumed to
always be exclusively owned by targets. However, this design decision
goes against I/O determinism QoS (two targets would mix I/O on the same
parallel unit in the device).

This patch makes LUN reservation as part of the target creation on the
media manager. This makes that LUNs are always exclusively owned by the
target instantiated on top of them. LUN stripping and/or sharing should
be implemented on the target itself or the layers on top.

Targets are assumed to used the same generic ppa format, where the
address is partitioned on ch:lun:block:pg:pl:sec. Thus, make the
function in charge of transforming the ppa address from a linear format
to the generic one available to all targets.

This function will be needed by the media manager in order to do target
mapping translations when targets are divided on different physical
partitions.

Paul Gortmaker 389b2a1c0e lightnvm: make core.c explicitly non-modular
The Kconfig currently controlling compilation of this code is:

drivers/lightnvm/Kconfig:menuconfig NVM
drivers/lightnvm/Kconfig:       bool "Open-Channel SSD target support"

...meaning that it currently is not being built as a module by anyone.

Lets remove the modular code that is essentially orphaned, so that
when reading the driver there is no doubt it is builtin-only.

Since module_misc_driver translates to device_initcall in the non-modular
case, the init ordering remains unchanged with this commit.

We also delete the MODULE_LICENSE tag etc. since all that information
is already contained at the top of the file in the comments.

We replace module.h with moduleparam.h because this file still uses
module params to control behaviour.

Also note that MODULE_ALIAS is a no-op for non-modular code.

For a host to access an Open-Channel SSD, it has to know its geometry,
so that it writes and reads at the appropriate device bounds.

Currently, the geometry information is kept within the kernel, and not
exported to user-space for consumption. This patch exposes the
configuration through sysfs and enables user-space libraries, such as
liblightnvm, to use the sysfs implementation to get the geometry of an
Open-Channel SSD.

The sysfs entries are stored within the device hierarchy, and can be
found using the "lightnvm" device type.

Matias Bjørling b0b4e09c1a lightnvm: control life of nvm_dev in driver
LightNVM compatible device drivers does not have a method to expose
LightNVM specific sysfs entries.

To enable LightNVM sysfs entries to be exposed, lightnvm device
drivers require a struct device to attach it to. To allow both the
actual device driver and lightnvm sysfs entries to coexist, the device
driver tracks the lifetime of the nvm_dev structure.

This patch refactors NVMe and null_blk to handle the lifetime of struct
nvm_dev, which eliminates the need for struct gendisk when a lightnvm
compatible device is provided.

Matias Bjørling ac81bfa986 nvme: refactor namespaces to support non-gendisk devices
With LightNVM enabled namespaces, the gendisk structure is not exposed
to the user. This prevents LightNVM users from accessing the NVMe device
driver specific sysfs entries, and LightNVM namespace geometry.

Refactor the revalidation process, so that a namespace, instead of a
gendisk, is revalidated. This later allows patches to wire up the
sysfs entries up to a non-gendisk namespace.

These two are confusing leftover of the old world order, combining
values of the REQ_OP_ and REQ_ namespaces.  For callers that don't
special case we mostly just replace bi_rw with bio_data_dir or
op_is_write, except for the few cases where a switch over the REQ_OP_
values makes more sense.  Any check for READA is replaced with an
explicit check for REQ_RAHEAD.  Also remove the READA alias for
REQ_RAHEAD.

Matias Bjørling 41285fad51 lightnvm: remove _unlocked variant of [get/put]_blk
The [get/put]_blk API enables targets to get ownership of blocks at
runtime. This information is currently not recorded on disk, and the
information is therefore lost on power failure. To restore the
metadata, the [get/put]_blk must persist its metadata. In that case,
we need to control the outer lock, so that we can disable them while
updating the on-disk metadata. Fortunately, the _unlocked versions can
be removed, which allows us to move the lock into the [get/put]_blk
functions.

Matias Bjørling 5cd907853d lightnvm: remove nested lock conflict with mm
If a media manager tries to initialize it targets upon media manager
initialization, the media manager will need to know which target types
are available in LightNVM. The lists of which managers and target types
are available shares the same lock.

Therefore, on initialization, the nvm_lock is taken by LightNVM core,
which later leads to a deadlock when target types are enumerated by the
media manager.

Add an exclusive lock for target types to resolve this conflict.

Matias Bjørling b76eb20bb0 lightnvm: move target mgmt into media mgr
To enable persistent block management to easily control creation and
removal of targets, we move target management into the media
manager. The LightNVM core continues to maintain which target types are
registered, while the media manager now keeps track of its initialized
targets.

Two new callbacks for the media manager are introduced. create_tgt and
remove_tgt. Note that remove_tgt returns 0 on successfully removing a
target, and returns 1 if the target was not found.

structure.

Javier González cca87bc9d3 lightnvm: do not assume sequential lun alloc.
When doing GC, rrpc calculates the physical LUN to which the rrpc block
belongs too. This calculation is based on the assumption that LUNs are
assigned sequentially to the LUN list. Use the reference to the LUN
instead. This saves us the calculation and allows us to align LUNs in a
different manner to, for example, take advantage of devide parallelism.

Matias Bjørling 293a6e8e27 lightnvm: fix out of bound ppa lun id on bb tbl
The ppa configured for retrieving the bad block table uses the internal
lun id to setup the get bad block ppa. This increases monotonically
with the number luns available. When configuring a ppa, the channel and
lun must be specified separately, leading to an out of bound memory
access in gennvm_block_bb when lun id goes beyond the luns available
within a channel.

Additional, remove out of bound check in gennvm_block_bb(), as it was a
buggy to begin with.

Matias Bjørling 5ebc7d9fe1 lightnvm: make nvm_set_rqd_ppalist() aware of vblks
A virtual block enables a block to identify multiple physical blocks.
This is useful for metadata where a device media supports multiple
planes. In that case, a block, with multiple planes can be managed
as a single vblk. Reducing the metadata required by one forth.

nvm_set_rqd_ppalist() takes care of expanding a ppa_list with vblks
automatically. However, for some use-cases, where only a single physical
block is required, the ppa_list should not be expanded.

Therefore, add a vblk parameter to nvm_set_rqd_ppalist(), and only
expand the ppa_list if vblk is set.

Matias Bjørling e11903f5df lightnvm: refactor device ops->get_bb_tbl()
The device ops->get_bb_tbl() takes a callback, that allows the caller
to use its own callback function to update its data structures in the
returning function.

This makes it difficult to send parameters to the callback, and usually
is circumvented by small private structures, that both carry the callers
state and any flags needed to fulfill the update.

Refactor ops->get_bb_tbl() to fill a data buffer with the status of the
blocks returned, and let the user call the callback function manually.
That will provide the necessary flags and data structures and simplify
the logic around ops->get_bb_tbl().

Matias Bjørling 5136061ce7 lightnvm: introduce nvm_for_each_lun_ppa() macro
Users that wish to iterate all luns on a device. Must create a
struct ppa_addr and separate iterators for channels and luns. To set the
iterators, two loops are required, one to iterate channels, and another
to iterate luns. This leads to decrease in readability.

Introduce nvm_for_each_lun_ppa, which implements the nested loop and
sets ppa, channel, and lun variable for each loop body, eliminating
the boilerplate code.

search for targets upon registration.

Wenwei Tao 909049a719 lightnvm: store rrpc->soffset in device sector size
Since we mainly use soffset in device sector size, we therefore store
this value in rrpc->soffset, instead of the offset in 512byte sector
size. This eliminates the "(ilog2(dev->sec_size) - 9)" calculation on
each I/O.

Matias Bjørling 22e8c9766a lightnvm: move block fold outside of get_bb_tbl()
The get block table command returns a list of blocks and planes
with their associated state. Users, such as gennvm and sysblk,
manages all planes as a single virtual block.

It was therefore  natural to fold the bad block list before it is
returned. However, to allow users, which manages on a per-plane
block level, to also use the interface, the get_bb_tbl interface is
changed to not fold by default and instead let the caller fold if
necessary.

Javier González 29fd20b8e6 lightnvm: do not load L2P table if not supported
An Open-Channel SSD can work on two modes: (i) hybrid mode, where the
L2P table is maintained both by the host and by the device; and (ii)
full host-based, where the L2P table is uniquely maintained by the host.

In the advent of a new target implementing the full host-based mode, do
not assume that the L2P table must be loaded on the generic media
manager; check device properties loaded on the identify command instead.

Javier González 719b59172c lightnvm: do not reserve lun on l2p loading
When the l2p table is loaded, addresses are checked for the lun they
belong to and luns are reserved accordingly. This assumes that metadata
is being stored in the backend device to recover the previous target
configuration. Since this is not yet implemented, this check collides
with some of the core initialization (e.g., sysblock initialization when
a page is formed by several sectors).

We take this check out and for now rely on that the right target will be
created instead. When metadata is stored to recover a target, this check
will come natural as part of the recovery strategy.

We can create more than one target on a lightnvm
device by specifying its begin lun and end lun.

But only specify the physical address area is not
enough, we need to get the corresponding non-
intersection logical address area division from
the backend device's logcial address space.
Otherwise the targets on the device might use
the same logical addresses cause incorrect
information in the device's l2p table.

Javier González afb18e0ed8 lightnvm: generalize rrpc ppa calculations
In rrpc, some calculations assume a certain configuration (e.g., 1 LUN,
1 sector per page). The reason behind this was that LightNVM used a
simple configuration with QEMU to test core features in the beginning.
This patch relaxes these assumptions and generalizes calculation,
allowing multiple luns to be used.

Javier González 6adb03de40 lightnvm: update closed list outside of intr context
When an I/O finishes, full blocks are moved from the open to the closed
list - a lock is taken to protect the list. This happens at the moment
in the interrupt context, which is not correct.

This patch moves this logic to the block workqueue instead, avoiding
holding a spinlock without interrupt save in an interrupt context.

Matias Bjørling d5bdec8ddb lightnvm: fold get bb tbl when using dual/quad plane mode
When the media manager runs in dual or quad plane mode, lightnvm
abstracts away plane specific commands. This poses a problem for
get bad block table, as it reports bad blocks per plane, making the
table either two or four times bigger than expected. Fold the bad block
list before returning.

Matias Bjørling bf64318564 lightnvm: allow to force mm initialization
System block allows the device to initialize with its configured media
manager. The system blocks is written to disk, and read again when media
manager is determined. For this to work, the backend must store the
data. Device drivers, such as null_blk, does not have any backend
storage. This patch allows the media manager to be initialized without a
storage backend.

It also fix incorrect configuration of capabilities in null_blk, as it
does not support get/set bad block interface.

Javier González 3704e098cc lightnvm: fix request intersection locking in rrpc
This patch fixes an error on the calculation of intersecting logical
addresses; it contemplates the case where a new request including
several addresses intersects with a single locked address. This case is
typical when multiple pages are sent in a new request, while GC - which
at the moment sends one address at the time - is running.

Matias Bjørling 8b4970c41f lightnvm: introduce factory reset
Now that a device can be managed using the system blocks, a method to
reset the device is necessary as well. This patch introduces logic to
reset the device easily to factory state and exposes it through an
ioctl.

The ioctl takes the following flags:

  NVM_FACTORY_ERASE_ONLY_USER
      By default all blocks, except host-reserved blocks are erased upon
      factory reset. Instead of this, only erase host-reserved blocks.
  NVM_FACTORY_RESET_HOST_BLKS
      Mark host-reserved blocks to be erased and set their type to free.
  NVM_FACTORY_RESET_GRWN_BBLKS
      Mark "grown bad blocks" to be erased and set their type to free.

Use system block information to register the appropriate media manager.
This enables the LightNVM subsystem to instantiate a media manager
selected by the user, instead of relying on automatic detection by each
media manager loaded in the kernel.

A device must now be initialized before it can proceed to initialize its
media manager. Upon initialization, the configured media manager is
automatically initialized as well.

Matias Bjørling e3eb3799f7 lightnvm: core on-disk initialization
An Open-Channel SSD shall be initialized before use. To initialize, we
define an on-disk format, that keeps a small set of metadata to bring up
the media manager on top of the device.

The initial step is introduced to allow a user to format the disks for a
given media manager. During format, a system block is stored on one to
three separate luns on the device. Each lun has the system block
duplicated. During initialization, the system block can be retrieved and
the appropriate media manager can initialized.

The on-disk format currently covers (struct nvm_system_block):

 - Magic value "NVMS".
 - Monotonic increasing sequence number.
 - The physical block erase count.
 - Version of the system block format.
 - Media manager type.
 - Media manager superblock physical address.

The interface provides three functions to manage the system block:

 int nvm_init_sysblock(struct nvm_dev *, struct nvm_sb_info *)
 int nvm_get_sysblock(struct nvm *dev, struct nvm_sb_info *)
 int nvm_update_sysblock(struct nvm *dev, struct nvm_sb_info *)

Each implement a part of the logic to manage the system block. The
initialization creates the first system blocks and mark them on the
device. Get retrieves the latest system block by scanning all pages in
the associated system blocks. The update sysblock writes new metadata
and allocates new block if necessary.

Matias Bjørling ca5927e7ab lightnvm: introduce mlc lower page table mappings
NAND MLC memories have both lower and upper pages. When programming,
both of these must be written, before data can be read. However,
these lower and upper pages might not placed at even and odd flash
pages, but can be skipped. Therefore each flash memory has its lower
pages defined, which can then be used when programming and to know when
padding are necessary.

This patch implements the lower page definition in the specification,
and exposes it through a simple lookup table at dev->lptbl.

Javier González ff0e498bfa lightnvm: manage open and closed blocks separately
LightNVM targets need to know the state of the flash block when doing
flash optimizations. An example is implementing a write buffer to
respect the flash page size. Currently, block state is not accounted
for; the media manager only differentiates among free, bad and in-use
blocks.

This patch adds the logic in the generic media manager to enable
targets manage blocks into open and close separately, and it implements
such management in rrpc. It also adds a set of flags to describe the
state of the block (open, closed, free, bad).

In order to avoid taking two locks (nvm_lun and rrpc_lun) consecutively,
we introduce lockless get_/put_block primitives so that the open and
close list locks and future common logic is handled within the nvm_lun
lock.

Javier González d7a64d275b lightnvm: reference rrpc lun in rrpc block
Currently, a rrpc block only points to its nvm_lun. If a user wants to
find the associated rrpc lun, it will have to calculate the index and
look it up manually. By referencing the rrpc lun directly, this step can
be omitted, at the cost of a larger memory footprint.

This is important for upcoming patches that implement write buffering in
rrpc.
