The example code provided with the i2c device interface documentation
won't compile since it uses the reserved word "register" to name a
variable.
The compiler fails with this error message:
error: expected identifier or '(' before '=' token
__u8 register = 0x20; /* Device register to access */
^
Rename the variable "register" to simply "reg" in the example code.
Another couple of typos has been fixed as well.

Some chips implement banked register ranges. This allows implementing
more registers than the limited 8-bit address space originally allows.
In order to access a register on these chips, you must first select
the proper bank. Add support for this mechanism to the i2c-stub driver
so that such chips can be emulated. All the bank settings are passed
as module parameters.

SMBus block commands are different to I2C block commands since
the returned data is not normally accessible with byte or word
commands on other command offsets. Add linked list of 'block'
commands to support those commands.
Access mechanism is quite simple: Block commands must be written
before they can be read. Subsequent writes can be partial. Block
read commands always return the number of bytes associated with
the longest previous write.

Documentation/i2c/fault-codes illustrates EINVAL error code
as follows:
"One example would be a driver trying an SMBus Block Write
with block size outside the range of 1-32 bytes."
However, the actual implementation of i2c subsystem truncates
data length to be 32 bytes.
Hence this example cannot happen anymore, and since it's obsolete,
let's simply remove it from Documentation/i2c/fault-codes.

The iSMT (Intel SMBus Message Transport) supports multi-master I2C/SMBus,
as well as IPMI. It's operation is DMA-based and utilizes descriptors to
initiate transactions on the bus.
The iSMT hardware can act as both a master and a target, although this
driver only supports being a master.

CONFIG_HOTPLUG is going away as an option. As a result, the __dev*
markings need to be removed.
This change removes the use of __devinit, __devexit_p, __devinitdata,
__devinitconst, and __devexit from the kernel documentation.
Based on patches originally written by Bill Pemberton, but redone by me
in order to handle some of the coding style issues better, by hand.

While the mapping between I2C adapter functionality flags and
i2c_smbus_*() helper functions is rather obvious, let's still document
it for clarity.
Also drop the reference to 2 command byte I2C block reads, there is no
support for that in the kernel at the moment.

Add a new 'feature' to i2c-i801 to enable using PCI interrupts.
When the feature is enabled, then an isr is installed for the device's
PCI IRQ.
An I2C/SMBus transaction is always terminated by one of the following
interrupt sources: FAILED, BUS_ERR, DEV_ERR, or on success: INTR.
When the isr fires for one of these cases, it sets the ->status variable
and wakes up the waitq. The waitq then saves off the status code, and
clears ->status (in preparation for some future transaction).
The SMBus controller generates an INTR irq at the end of each
transaction where INTREN was set in the HST_CNT register.
No locking is needed around accesses to priv->status since all writes to
it are serialized: it is only ever set once in the isr at the end of a
transaction, and cleared while no interrupts can occur. In addition, the
I2C adapter lock guarantees that entire I2C transactions for a single
adapter are always serialized.
For this patch, the INTREN bit is set only for SMBus block, byte and word
transactions, but not for I2C reads or writes. The use of the DS
(BYTE_DONE) interrupt with byte-by-byte I2C transactions is implemented in
a subsequent patch.
The interrupt feature has only been enabled for COUGARPOINT hardware.
In addition, it is disabled if SMBus is using the SMI# interrupt.

Since there are uses for I2C_M_NOSTART which are much more sensible and
standard than most of the protocol mangling functionality (the main one
being gather writes to devices where something like a register address
needs to be inserted before a block of data) create a new I2C_FUNC_NOSTART
for this feature and update all the users to use it.
Also strengthen the disrecommendation of the protocol mangling while we're
at it.
In the case of regmap-i2c we remove the requirement for mangling as
I2C_M_NOSTART is the only mangling feature which is being used.

Usage of /etc/modprobe.conf file was deprecated by module-init-tools and
is no longer parsed by new kmod tool. References to this file are
replaced in Documentation, comments and Kconfig according to the
context.
There are also some references to the old /etc/modules.conf from 2.4
kernels that are being removed.

10-bit addresses overlap with traditional 7-bit addresses, leading in
device name collisions. Add an arbitrary offset to 10-bit addresses to
prevent this collision. The offset was chosen so that the address is
still easily recognizable.

Some of the addresses date as far far back as 1995 etc... so searching became a bit difficult,
the best way to deal with these is to use web.archive.org to locate these addresses that are outdated.
Now there are also some addresses pointing to .spec files some are located, but some(after searching
on the companies site)where still no where to be found. In this case I just changed the address
to the company site this way the users can contact the company and they can locate them for the users.

After discovering that a lot of i2c-drivers leave the pointer to their
clientdata dangling, it was decided to let the core handle this issue.
It is assumed that the core may access the private data after remove()
as there are no guarantees for the lifetime of such pointers anyhow (see
thread starting at http://lkml.org/lkml/2010/3/21/68)

SMBus alert support. The SMBus alert protocol allows several SMBus
slave devices to share a single interrupt pin on the SMBus master,
while still allowing the master to know which slave triggered the
interrupt.
This is based on preliminary work by David Brownell. The key
difference between David's implementation and mine is that his was
part of i2c-core, while mine is split into a separate, standalone
module named i2c-smbus. The i2c-smbus module is meant to include
support for all SMBus extensions to the I2C protocol in the future.
The benefit of this approach is a zero cost for I2C bus segments which
do not need SMBus alert support. Where David's implementation
increased the size of struct i2c_adapter by 7% (40 bytes on i386),
mine doesn't touch it. Where David's implementation added over 150
lines of code to i2c-core (+10%), mine doesn't touch it. The only
change that touches all the users of the i2c subsystem is a new
callback in struct i2c_driver (common to both implementations.) I seem
to remember Trent was worried about the footprint of David'd
implementation, hopefully mine addresses the issue.

Add a module parameter to override the functionality bitfield. This
lets the user disable some commands. This can be used to force a chip
driver to take different code paths.

The legacy probe and force module parameters are obsolete now, the
same can be achieved using the new_device sysfs interface, which is
both more flexible and cheaper (it is implemented by i2c-core rather
than replicated in every driver module.)
The legacy ignore module parameters can be dropped as well. Ignoring
can be done by instantiating a "dummy" device at the problematic
address.
This is the first step of a huge cleanup to i2c-core's i2c_detect
function, i2c.h's I2C_CLIENT_INSMOD* macros, and all drivers that made
use of them.

Add a sysfs interface to instantiate and delete I2C devices. This is
primarily a replacement of the force_* module parameters implemented
by some i2c drivers. These module parameters were implemented
internally by the I2C_CLIENT_INSMOD* macros, which don't scale well.
This can also be used when developing a driver on a self-soldered
board which doesn't yet have proper I2C device declaration at the
platform level, and presumably for various debugging situations.

There is sometimes a need for the ocores driver to add devices to the
bus when installed.
i2c_register_board_info can not always be used, because the I2C devices
are not known at an early state, they could for instance be connected
on a I2C bus on a PCI device which has the Open Cores IP.
i2c_new_device can not be used in all cases either since the resulting
bus nummer might be unknown.
The solution is the pass a list of I2C devices in the platform data to
the Open Cores driver. This is useful for MFD drivers.

Directory drivers/i2c/chips is going away, so drivers there must find
new homes. For the pcf8591 driver, the best choice seems to be the
hwmon subsystem. While the Philips PCF8591 device isn't a typical
hardware monitoring chip, its DAC interface is compatible with the
hwmon one, so it fits somewhat.
If a better subsystem is ever created for ADC/DAC chips, the driver
could be moved there.

The MCP78S and MCP79 appear to be compatible with the previous nForce
chips as far as the SMBus controller is concerned. The MCP67 and MCP73
were not tested yet but I'd be very surprised if they weren't
compatible too.

On popular demand, here comes some documentation about how to
instantiate i2c devices in the new (standard) i2c device driver
binding model.
I have also clarified how the class bitfield lets driver authors
control which buses are probed in the auto-detect case, and warned
more loudly against the abuse of this method.

The document describing how to port i2c chip drivers from Linux 2.4 to
Linux 2.6 is outdated. As I suspect that most drivers that had to be
ported have already been by now, I do not want to spend time updating
it. Let's just delete it instead.

Add a mechanism to let new-style i2c drivers optionally autodetect
devices they would support on selected buses and ask i2c-core to
instantiate them. This is a replacement for legacy i2c drivers, much
cleaner.
Where drivers had to implement both a legacy i2c_driver and a
new-style i2c_driver so far, this mechanism makes it possible to get
rid of the legacy i2c_driver and implement both enumerated and
detected device support with just one (new-style) i2c_driver.
Here is a quick conversion guide for these drivers, step by step:
* Delete the legacy driver definition, registration and removal.
Delete the attach_adapter and detach_client methods of the legacy
driver.
* Change the prototype of the legacy detect function from
static int foo_detect(struct i2c_adapter *adapter, int address, int kind);
to
static int foo_detect(struct i2c_client *client, int kind,
struct i2c_board_info *info);
* Set the new-style driver detect callback to this new function, and
set its address_data to &addr_data (addr_data is generally provided
by I2C_CLIENT_INSMOD.)
* Add the appropriate class to the new-style driver. This is
typically the class the legacy attach_adapter method was checking
for. Class checking is now mandatory (done by i2c-core.) See
<linux/i2c.h> for the list of available classes.
* Remove the i2c_client allocation and freeing from the detect
function. A pre-allocated client is now handed to you by i2c-core,
and is freed automatically.
* Make the detect function fill the type field of the i2c_board_info
structure it was passed as a parameter, and return 0, on success. If
the detection fails, return -ENODEV.

More updates to the I2C stack's fault reporting: make the core stop
returning "-1" (usually "-EPERM") for all faults. Instead, pass lower
level fault code up the stack, or return some appropriate errno.
This patch happens to touch almost exclusively SMBus calls.

Improve the smbus-protocol documentation file somewhat:
- Use the names of the SMBus protocol operations (from the 2.0
specification), not made-up-for-Linux names.
- Add the name of the call used to execute each operation ... and
point out that there are mismatches, where functions execute
different protocol operations than their names specify.
The most confusing examples are that "Read Byte" isn't executed by
i2c_smbus_read_byte(), and that "Write Byte" isn't executed by
i2c_smbus_write_byte(). When coding, that's not as bad as it may
seem; but that case would seem to be worth fixing.

the official kernel aliasing system and MODULE_DEVICE_TABLE(). At this

I2C block read is supported since the ICH5. I couldn't get it to work
using the block buffer, so it's using the old-style byte-by-byte mode
for now.
Note: I'm also updating the driver author... The i2c-i801 driver was
really written by Mark Studebaker, even though he based his work on
the i2c-piix4 driver which was written by Philip Edelbrock.

functionality as always available through the software implementation.
Update documentation accordingly (and list similar requirements).
The way it's currently packaged doesn't present the capability in a

We find that SB700 and SB800 use the same SMBus device ID as SB600, which is
0x4385, instead of the already submitted 0x4395.
Besides removing the wrong SB700 device ID, add SB800 support to kernel, by
renaming the PCI_DEVICE_ID_ATI_IXP600_SMBUS into
PCI_DEVICE_ID_ATI_SBX00_SMBUS.

Add an ability to utilize the internal SRAM buffer on ICH4
and newer host controllers to speed up execution of block operations.
I've split the code so that it is more clear which block transaction is
performed.
First of all the host controller's type is identified. isich4 is set when
we think that the controller has the internal buffer. Then, before every
block transaction, if isich4 is set, we attempt to enable the E32B bit in
SMBAUXCTL register.

Let the drivers specify how many bytes they want to read with
i2c_smbus_read_i2c_block_data(). So far, the block count was
hard-coded to I2C_SMBUS_BLOCK_MAX (32), which did not make much sense.
Many driver authors complained about this before, and I believe it's
about time to fix it. Right now, authors have to do technically stupid
things, such as individual byte reads or full-fledged I2C messaging,
to work around the problem. We do not want to encourage that.
I even found that some bus drivers (e.g. i2c-amd8111) already
implemented I2C block read the "right" way, that is, they didn't
follow the old, broken standard. The fact that it was never noticed
before just shows how little i2c_smbus_read_i2c_block_data() was used,
which isn't that surprising given how broken its prototype was so far.
There are some obvious compatiblity considerations:
* This changes the i2c_smbus_read_i2c_block_data() prototype. Users
outside the kernel tree will notice at compilation time, and will
have to update their code.
* User-space has access to i2c_smbus_xfer() directly using i2c-dev, so
the changed expectations would affect tools such as i2cdump. In order
to preserve binary compatibility, we give I2C_SMBUS_I2C_BLOCK_DATA
a new numeric value, and define I2C_SMBUS_I2C_BLOCK_BROKEN with the
old numeric value. When i2c-dev receives a transaction with the
old value, it can convert it to the new format on the fly.

Make the documentation on how to write and port i2c drivers more in
line with the current state of things:
* i2c-isa is deprecated and soon gone, so stop advertising it.
* Drop many sensors-specific references. Most of them were outdated
anyway.
* Update the example code to reflect the recent and not-so-recent
API and coding style preference changes.
* Simplify the example init and cleanup functions.
This should make things less complex to understand for newcomers.

Make i2c_del_driver a void function, like all other driver removal
functions. It always returned 0 even when errors occured, and nobody
ever actually checked the return value anyway. And we cannot fail
a module removal anyway.

This simple patch adds support to i2c-parport for the One For All remote
JP1 parallel port interfaces which can be found detailed at:
http://www.hifi-remote.com/jp1/hardware.shtml
These allow access to the internal configuration EEPROM on various
remote controls and there are a variety of Windows tools that make use
of this hardware. I have tested this patch with the "simple" parallel
port device and a One For All URC-7562 and confirmed that the data read
using the eeprom i2c driver matches that returned by the Windows "IR"
JP1 tool.

Driver model updates for the I2C core:
- Add new suspend(), resume(), and shutdown() methods. Use them in the
standard driver model style; document them.
- Minor doc updates to highlight zero-initialized fields in drivers, and
the driver model accessors for "clientdata".
If any i2c drivers were previously using the old suspend/resume calls
in "struct driver", they were getting warning messages ... and will
now no longer work. Other than that, this patch changes no behaviors;
and it lets I2C drivers use conventional PM and shutdown support.
