Abhilash Jindal f7b382b988 PM/freezer: y2038, use boottime to compare tstamps
Wall time obtained from do_gettimeofday gives 32 bit timeval which can only
represent time until January 2038. This patch moves to ktime_t, a 64-bit time.

Also, wall time is susceptible to sudden jumps due to user setting the time or
due to NTP. Boot time is constantly increasing time better suited for
subtracting two timestamps.

Arnd Bergmann 993e9fe1e7 PM: APM_EMULATION does not depend on PM
The APM emulation code does multiple things, and some of them depend on
PM_SLEEP, while the battery management does not. However, selecting
the symbol like SHARPSL_PM does causes a Kconfig warning:

warning: (SHARPSL_PM && PMAC_APM_EMU) selects APM_EMULATION which has unmet direct dependencies (PM && SYS_SUPPORTS_APM_EMULATION)

From all I can tell, this is completely harmless, and we can simply allow
APM_EMULATION to be enabled here, even if PM is not.

Mel Gorman 71baba4b92 mm, page_alloc: rename __GFP_WAIT to __GFP_RECLAIM
__GFP_WAIT was used to signal that the caller was in atomic context and
could not sleep. Now it is possible to distinguish between true atomic
context and callers that are not willing to sleep. The latter should
clear __GFP_DIRECT_RECLAIM so kswapd will still wake. As clearing
__GFP_WAIT behaves differently, there is a risk that people will clear the
wrong flags. This patch renames __GFP_WAIT to __GFP_RECLAIM to clearly
indicate what it does -- setting it allows all reclaim activity, clearing
them prevents it.

Mel Gorman d0164adc89 mm, page_alloc: distinguish between being unable to sleep, unwilling to sleep and avoiding waking kswapd
__GFP_WAIT has been used to identify atomic context in callers that hold
spinlocks or are in interrupts. They are expected to be high priority and
have access one of two watermarks lower than "min" which can be referred
to as the "atomic reserve". __GFP_HIGH users get access to the first
lower watermark and can be called the "high priority reserve".

Over time, callers had a requirement to not block when fallback options
were available. Some have abused __GFP_WAIT leading to a situation where
an optimisitic allocation with a fallback option can access atomic
reserves.

This patch uses __GFP_ATOMIC to identify callers that are truely atomic,
cannot sleep and have no alternative. High priority users continue to use
__GFP_HIGH. __GFP_DIRECT_RECLAIM identifies callers that can sleep and
are willing to enter direct reclaim. __GFP_KSWAPD_RECLAIM to identify
callers that want to wake kswapd for background reclaim. __GFP_WAIT is
redefined as a caller that is willing to enter direct reclaim and wake
kswapd for background reclaim.

This patch then converts a number of sites

o __GFP_ATOMIC is used by callers that are high priority and have memory
pools for those requests. GFP_ATOMIC uses this flag.

o Callers that have a limited mempool to guarantee forward progress clear
__GFP_DIRECT_RECLAIM but keep __GFP_KSWAPD_RECLAIM. bio allocations fall
into this category where kswapd will still be woken but atomic reserves
are not used as there is a one-entry mempool to guarantee progress.

o Callers that are checking if they are non-blocking should use the
helper gfpflags_allow_blocking() where possible. This is because
checking for __GFP_WAIT as was done historically now can trigger false
positives. Some exceptions like dm-crypt.c exist where the code intent
is clearer if __GFP_DIRECT_RECLAIM is used instead of the helper due to
  flag manipulations.

o Callers that built their own GFP flags instead of starting with GFP_KERNEL
and friends now also need to specify __GFP_KSWAPD_RECLAIM.

The first key hazard to watch out for is callers that removed __GFP_WAIT
and was depending on access to atomic reserves for inconspicuous reasons.
In some cases it may be appropriate for them to use __GFP_HIGH.

The second key hazard is callers that assembled their own combination of
GFP flags instead of starting with something like GFP_KERNEL. They may
now wish to specify __GFP_KSWAPD_RECLAIM. It's almost certainly harmless
if it's missed in most cases as other activity will wake kswapd.

Rafael J. Wysocki ef25ba0476 PM / sleep: Add flags to indicate platform firmware involvement
There are quite a few cases in which device drivers, bus types or
even the PM core itself may benefit from knowing whether or not
the platform firmware will be involved in the upcoming system power
transition (during system suspend) or whether or not it was involved
in it (during system resume).

For this reason, introduce global system suspend flags that can be
used by the platform code to expose that information for the benefit
of the other parts of the kernel and make the ACPI core set them
as appropriate.

Users of the new flags will be added later.

Linus Torvalds 1081230b74 Merge branch 'for-4.3/core' of git://git.kernel.dk/linux-block
Pull core block updates from Jens Axboe:
"This first core part of the block IO changes contains:

   - Cleanup of the bio IO error signaling from Christoph. We used to
rely on the uptodate bit and passing around of an error, now we
store the error in the bio itself.

   - Improvement of the above from myself, by shrinking the bio size
down again to fit in two cachelines on x86-64.

   - Revert of the max_hw_sectors cap removal from a revision again,
from Jeff Moyer. This caused performance regressions in various
tests. Reinstate the limit, bump it to a more reasonable size
     instead.

   - Make /sys/block/<dev>/queue/discard_max_bytes writeable, by me.
Most devices have huge trim limits, which can cause nasty latencies
when deleting files. Enable the admin to configure the size down.
We will look into having a more sane default instead of UINT_MAX
     sectors.

   - Improvement of the SGP gaps logic from Keith Busch.

   - Enable the block core to handle arbitrarily sized bios, which
enables a nice simplification of bio_add_page() (which is an IO hot
     path). From Kent.

   - Improvements to the partition io stats accounting, making it
     faster. From Ming Lei.

   - Also from Ming Lei, a basic fixup for overflow of the sysfs pending
file in blk-mq, as well as a fix for a blk-mq timeout race
     condition.

   - Ming Lin has been carrying Kents above mentioned patches forward
for a while, and testing them. Ming also did a few fixes around
     that.

   - Sasha Levin found and fixed a use-after-free problem introduced by
     the bio->bi_error changes from Christoph.

   - Small blk cgroup cleanup from Viresh Kumar"

Len Brown 2fd77fff4b PM / suspend: make sync() on suspend-to-RAM build-time optional
The Linux kernel suspend path has traditionally invoked sys_sync()
before freezing user threads.

But sys_sync() can be expensive, and some user-space OS's do not want
the kernel to pay the cost of sys_sync() on every suspend -- preferring
invoke sync() from user-space if/when they want it.

So make sys_sync on suspend build-time optional.

The default is unchanged.

Christoph Hellwig 4246a0b63b block: add a bi_error field to struct bio
Currently we have two different ways to signal an I/O error on a BIO:

 (1) by clearing the BIO_UPTODATE flag
 (2) by returning a Linux errno value to the bi_end_io callback

The first one has the drawback of only communicating a single possible
error (-EIO), and the second one has the drawback of not beeing persistent
when bios are queued up, and are not passed along from child to parent
bio in the ever more popular chaining scenario. Having both mechanisms
available has the additional drawback of utterly confusing driver authors
and introducing bugs where various I/O submitters only deal with one of
them, and the others have to add boilerplate code to deal with both kinds
of error returns.

So add a new bi_error field to store an errno value directly in struct
bio and remove the existing mechanisms to clean all this up.

The synchronous synchronize_rcu() in wakeup_source_remove() makes

Takashi Iwai fff3b16d27 PM / sleep: Increase default DPM watchdog timeout to 60
Many harddisks (mostly WD ones) have firmware problems and take too
long, more than 10 seconds, to resume from suspend. And this often
exceeds the default DPM watchdog timeout (12 seconds), resulting in a
kernel panic out of sudden.

Since most distros just take the default as is, we should give a bit
more safer value. This patch increases the default value from 12
seconds to one minute, which has been confirmed to be long enough for
such problematic disks.

purposes. However, a constant 5 second wait is not sufficient for some
sorts of analysis; for example, on an SoC, one might want to use
external tools to probe the power states of various on-chip controllers
or clocks.

This patch turns this 5 second delay into a configurable module
parameter, so users can determine how long to wait in this
pseudo-suspend state before resuming the system.

Example (wait 30 seconds);

  # echo 30 > /sys/module/suspend/parameters/pm_test_delay
  # echo core > /sys/power/pm_test
  # time echo mem > /sys/power/state
  ...
  [ 17.583625] suspend debug: Waiting for 30 second(s).

Rafael J. Wysocki 3810631332 PM / sleep: Re-implement suspend-to-idle handling
In preparation for adding support for quiescing timers in the final
stage of suspend-to-idle transitions, rework the freeze_enter()
function making the system wait on a wakeup event, the freeze_wake()
function terminating the suspend-to-idle loop and the mechanism by
which deep idle states are entered during suspend-to-idle.

First of all, introduce a simple state machine for suspend-to-idle
and make the code in question use it.

Second, prevent freeze_enter() from losing wakeup events due to race
conditions and ensure that the number of online CPUs won't change
while it is being executed. In addition to that, make it force
all of the CPUs re-enter the idle loop in case they are in idle
states already (so they can enter deeper idle states if possible).

Next, drop cpuidle_use_deepest_state() and replace use_deepest_state
checks in cpuidle_select() and cpuidle_reflect() with a single
suspend-to-idle state check in cpuidle_idle_call().

Finally, introduce cpuidle_enter_freeze() that will simply find the
deepest idle state available to the given CPU and enter it using
cpuidle_enter().

Michal Hocko c32b3cbe0d oom, PM: make OOM detection in the freezer path raceless
Commit 5695be142e ("OOM, PM: OOM killed task shouldn't escape PM
suspend") has left a race window when OOM killer manages to
note_oom_kill after freeze_processes checks the counter. The race
window is quite small and really unlikely and partial solution deemed
sufficient at the time of submission.

Tejun wasn't happy about this partial solution though and insisted on a
full solution. That requires the full OOM and freezer's task freezing
exclusion, though. This is done by this patch which introduces oom_sem
RW lock and turns oom_killer_disable() into a full OOM barrier.

oom_killer_disabled check is moved from the allocation path to the OOM
level and we take oom_sem for reading for both the check and the whole
OOM invocation.

oom_killer_disable() takes oom_sem for writing so it waits for all
currently running OOM killer invocations. Then it disable all the further
OOMs by setting oom_killer_disabled and checks for any oom victims.
Victims are counted via mark_tsk_oom_victim resp. unmark_oom_victim. The
last victim wakes up all waiters enqueued by oom_killer_disable().
Therefore this function acts as the full OOM barrier.

The page fault path is covered now as well although it was assumed to be
safe before. As per Tejun, "We used to have freezing points deep in file
system code which may be reacheable from page fault." so it would be
better and more robust to not rely on freezing points here. Same applies
to the memcg OOM killer.

out_of_memory tells the caller whether the OOM was allowed to trigger and
the callers are supposed to handle the situation. The page allocation
path simply fails the allocation same as before. The page fault path will
retry the fault (more on that later) and Sysrq OOM trigger will simply
complain to the log.

Normally there wouldn't be any unfrozen user tasks after
try_to_freeze_tasks so the function will not block. But if there was an
OOM killer racing with try_to_freeze_tasks and the OOM victim didn't
finish yet then we have to wait for it. This should complete in a finite
time, though, because

	- the victim cannot loop in the page fault handler (it would die
on the way out from the exception)
	- it cannot loop in the page allocator because all the further
allocation would fail and __GFP_NOFAIL allocations are not
	  acceptable at this stage
	- it shouldn't be blocked on any locks held by frozen tasks
(try_to_freeze expects lockless context) and kernel threads and
work queues are not frozen yet

Pull ACPI and power management updates from Rafael Wysocki:
"We have a few new features this time, including a new SFI-based
cpufreq driver, a new devfreq driver for Tegra Activity Monitor, a new
devfreq class for providing its governors with raw utilization data

Still, the majority of changes here are reworks of existing code to
make it more straightforward or to prepare it for implementing new

Nishanth Menon f5f4eda4c9 PM / QoS: Add debugfs support to view the list of constraints
PM QoS requests are notoriously hard to debug and made even
more so due to their highly dynamic nature. Having visibility
into the internal data representation per constraint allows
us to have much better appreciation of potential issues or
bad usage by drivers in the system.

So introduce for all classes of PM QoS, an entry in
/sys/kernel/debug/pm_qos that shall show all the current
requests as well as the snapshot of the value these requests
boil down to. For example:
==> /sys/kernel/debug/pm_qos/cpu_dma_latency <==
1: 4444: Active
2: 2000000000: Default
3: 2000000000: Default
4: 2000000000: Default
Type=Minimum, Value=4444, Requests: active=1 / total=4

==> /sys/kernel/debug/pm_qos/memory_bandwidth <==
Empty!

...

The actual value listed will have their meaning based
on the QoS it is on, the 'Type' indicates what logic
it would use to collate the information - Minimum,
Maximum, or Sum. Value is the collation of all requests.
This interface also compares the values with the defaults
for the QoS class and marks the ones that are
currently active.

Rafael J. Wysocki b2b49ccbdd PM: Kconfig: Set PM_RUNTIME if PM_SLEEP is selected
The number of and dependencies between high-level power management
Kconfig options make life much harder than necessary. Several
conbinations of them have to be tested and supported, even though
some of those combinations are very rarely used in practice (if
they are used in practice at all). Moreover, the fact that we
have separate independent Kconfig options for runtime PM and
system suspend is a serious obstacle for integration between
the two frameworks.

To overcome these difficulties, always select PM_RUNTIME if PM_SLEEP
is set. Among other things, this will allow system suspend callbacks
provided by bus types and device drivers to rely on the runtime PM
framework regardless of the kernel configuration.

Tina Ruchandani db59760582 PM / Hibernate: Migrate to ktime_t
This patch migrates swsusp_show_speed and its callers to using ktime_t instead
of 'struct timeval' which suffers from the y2038 problem.

Changes to swsusp_show_speed:
        - use ktime_t for start and stop times
        - pass start and stop times by value
Calling functions affected:
        - load_image
        - load_image_lzo
        - save_image
        - save_image_lzo
        - hibernate_preallocate_memory
Design decisions:
        - use ktime_t to preserve same granularity of reporting as before
        - use centisecs logic as before to avoid 'div by zero' issues caused by
          using seconds and nanoseconds directly
        - use monotonic time (ktime_get()) since we only care about elapsed time.

Michal Hocko 5695be142e OOM, PM: OOM killed task shouldn't escape PM suspend
PM freezer relies on having all tasks frozen by the time devices are
getting frozen so that no task will touch them while they are getting
frozen. But OOM killer is allowed to kill an already frozen task in
order to handle OOM situtation. In order to protect from late wake ups
OOM killer is disabled after all tasks are frozen. This, however, still
keeps a window open when a killed task didn't manage to die by the time
freeze_processes finishes.

Reduce the race window by checking all tasks after OOM killer has been
disabled. This is still not race free completely unfortunately because
oom_killer_disable cannot stop an already ongoing OOM killer so a task
might still wake up from the fridge and get killed without
freeze_processes noticing. Full synchronization of OOM and freezer is,
however, too heavy weight for this highly unlikely case.

Introduce and check oom_kills counter which gets incremented early when
the allocator enters __alloc_pages_may_oom path and only check all the
tasks if the counter changes during the freezing attempt. The counter
is updated so early to reduce the race window since allocator checked
oom_killer_disabled which is set by PM-freezing code. A false positive
will push the PM-freezer into a slow path but that is not a big deal.

Changes since v1
- push the re-check loop out of freeze_processes into
check_frozen_processes and invert the condition to make the code more
  readable as per Rafael

Joerg Roedel fdd64ed54e PM / hibernate: Iterate over set bits instead of PFNs in swsusp_free()
The existing implementation of swsusp_free iterates over all
pfns in the system and checks every bit in the two memory
bitmaps.

This doesn't scale very well with large numbers of pfns,
especially when the bitmaps are not populated very densly.
Change the algorithm to iterate over the set bits in the
bitmaps instead to make it scale better in large memory
configurations.

Also add a memory_bm_clear_current() helper function that
clears the bit for the last position returned from the
memory bitmap.

This new version adds a !NULL check for the memory bitmaps
before they are walked. Not doing so causes a kernel crash
when the bitmaps are NULL.

Rafael J. Wysocki a8d46b9e4e ACPI / sleep: Rework the handling of ACPI GPE wakeup from suspend-to-idle
The ACPI GPE wakeup from suspend-to-idle is currently based on using
the IRQF_NO_SUSPEND flag for the ACPI SCI, but that is problematic
for a couple of reasons. First, in principle the ACPI SCI may be
shared and IRQF_NO_SUSPEND does not really work well with shared
interrupts. Second, it may require the ACPI subsystem to special-case
the handling of device notifications depending on whether or not
they are received during suspend-to-idle in some places which would
lead to fragile code. Finally, it's better the handle ACPI wakeup
interrupts consistently with wakeup interrupts from other sources.

For this reason, remove the IRQF_NO_SUSPEND flag from the ACPI SCI
and use enable_irq_wake()/disable_irq_wake() with it instead, which
requires two additional platform hooks to be added to struct
platform_freeze_ops.

Pull ACPI and power management updates from Rafael Wysocki:
"Again, ACPICA leads the pack (47 commits), followed by cpufreq (18
commits) and system suspend/hibernation (9 commits).

From the new code perspective, the ACPICA update brings ACPI 5.1 to
the table, including a new device configuration object called _DSD
(Device Specific Data) that will hopefully help us to operate device
properties like Device Trees do (at least to some extent) and changes
related to supporting ACPI on ARM.

Apart from that we have hibernation changes making it use radix trees
to store memory bitmaps which should speed up some operations carried
out by it quite significantly. We also have some power management
changes related to suspend-to-idle (the "freeze" sleep state) support
and more preliminary changes needed to support ACPI on ARM (outside of
  ACPICA).

The rest is fixes and cleanups pretty much everywhere.

  Specifics:

   - ACPICA update to upstream version 20140724. That includes ACPI 5.1
material (support for the _CCA and _DSD predefined names, changes
related to the DMAR and PCCT tables and ARM support among other
things) and cleanups related to using ACPICA's header files. A
major part of it is related to acpidump and the core code used by
that utility. Changes from Bob Moore, David E Box, Lv Zheng,
Sascha Wildner, Tomasz Nowicki, Hanjun Guo.

   - Radix trees for memory bitmaps used by the hibernation core from
     Joerg Roedel.

   - Support for waking up the system from suspend-to-idle (also known
as the "freeze" sleep state) using ACPI-based PCI wakeup signaling

   - Fixes for issues related to ACPI button events (Rafael J Wysocki).

   - New device ID for an ACPI-enumerated device included into the

   - ACPI video updates related to backlight handling from Hans de Goede
     and Linus Torvalds.

   - Preliminary changes needed to support ACPI on ARM from Hanjun Guo
     and Graeme Gregory.

   - ACPI PNP core cleanups from Arjun Sreedharan and Zhang Rui.

   - Cleanups related to ACPI_COMPANION() and ACPI_HANDLE() macros
     (Rafael J Wysocki).

   - ACPI-based device hotplug cleanups from Wei Yongjun and Rafael J
     Wysocki.

   - Cleanups and improvements related to system suspend from Lan
Tianyu, Randy Dunlap and Rafael J Wysocki.

   - ACPI battery cleanup from Wei Yongjun.

   - cpufreq core fixes from Viresh Kumar.

   - Elimination of a deadband effect from the cpufreq ondemand governor
and intel_pstate driver cleanups from Stratos Karafotis.

   - 350MHz CPU support for the powernow-k6 cpufreq driver from Mikulas

Lee, Chun-Yi 84c91b7ae0 PM / hibernate: avoid unsafe pages in e820 reserved regions
When the machine doesn't well handle the e820 persistent when hibernate
resuming, then it may cause page fault when writing image to snapshot
buffer:

[ 17.929495] BUG: unable to handle kernel paging request at ffff880069d4f000
[ 17.933469] IP: [<ffffffff810a1cf0>] load_image_lzo+0x810/0xe40

[ 17.933469] Oops: 0002 [#1] SMP

The ffff880069d4f000 page is in e820 reserved region of resume boot
kernel:

[ 0.000000] BIOS-e820: [mem 0x0000000069d4f000-0x0000000069e12fff] reserved
...
[ 0.000000] PM: Registered nosave memory: [mem 0x69d4f000-0x69e12fff]

So snapshot.c mark the pfn to forbidden pages map. But, this
page is also in the memory bitmap in snapshot image because it's an
original page used by image kernel, so it will also mark as an
unsafe(free) page in prepare_image().

That means the page in e820 when resuming mark as "forbidden" and
"free", it causes get_buffer() treat it as an allocated unsafe page.
Then snapshot_write_next() return this page to load_image, load_image
writing content to this address, but this page didn't really allocated
. So, we got page fault.

Although the root cause is from BIOS, I think aggressive check and
significant message in kernel will better then a page fault for
issue tracking, especially when serial console unavailable.

This patch adds code in mark_unsafe_pages() for check does free pages in
nosave region. If so, then it print message and return fault to stop whole
S4 resume process:

Linus Torvalds b8c0aa46b3 This pull request has a lot of work done. The main thing is the changes
to the ftrace function callback infrastructure. It's introducing a
way to allow different functions to call directly different trampolines
instead of all calling the same "mcount" one.

The only user of this for now is the function graph tracer, which always
had a different trampoline, but the function tracer trampoline was called
and did basically nothing, and then the function graph tracer trampoline
was called. The difference now, is that the function graph tracer
trampoline can be called directly if a function is only being traced by
the function graph trampoline. If function tracing is also happening on
the same function, the old way is still done.

The accounting for this takes up more memory when function graph tracing
is activated, as it needs to keep track of which functions it uses.
I have a new way that wont take as much memory, but it's not ready yet
for this merge window, and will have to wait for the next one.

Another big change was the removal of the ftrace_start/stop() calls that
were used by the suspend/resume code that stopped function tracing when
entering into suspend and resume paths. The stop of ftrace was done
because there was some function that would crash the system if one called
smp_processor_id()! The stop/start was a big hammer to solve the issue
at the time, which was when ftrace was first introduced into Linux.
Now ftrace has better infrastructure to debug such issues, and I found
the problem function and labeled it with "notrace" and function tracing
can now safely be activated all the way down into the guts of suspend
 and resume.

Other changes include clean ups of uprobe code.
Clean up of the trace_seq() code.
And other various small fixes and clean ups to ftrace and tracing.

Joerg Roedel 0f7d83e85d PM / Hibernate: Touch Soft Lockup Watchdog in rtree_next_node
When a memory bitmap is fully populated on a large memory
machine (several TB of RAM) it can take more than a minute

Avoid this by touching the soft lockup watchdog in the

Change the algorithm to iterate over the set bits in the

Steven Rostedt (Red Hat) 2b014666a1 PM / Sleep: Remove ftrace_stop/start() from suspend and hibernate
ftrace_stop() and ftrace_start() were added to the suspend and hibernate
process because there was some function within the work flow that caused
the system to reboot if it was traced. This function has recently been
found (restore_processor_state()). Now there's no reason to disable
function tracing while we are going into suspend or hibernate, which means
that being able to trace this will help tremendously in debugging any
issues with suspend or hibernate.

This also means that the ftrace_stop/start() functions can be removed
and simplify the function tracing code a bit.

Takashi Iwai 4320f6b1d9 PM / sleep: Fix request_firmware() error at resume
The commit [247bc037: PM / Sleep: Mitigate race between the freezer

also leads to a new bug; for example, a bug report regarding the
firmware loading of intel BT device at suspend/resume:
  https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=873790

The root cause seems to be a small window between the process resume
and the clear of usermodehelper lock. The request_firmware() function
checks the UMH lock and gives up when it's in UMH_DISABLE state. This
is for avoiding the invalid f/w loading during suspend/resume phase.
The problem is, however, that usermodehelper_enable() is called at the
end of thaw_processes(). Thus, a thawed process in between can kick
off the f/w loader code path (in this case, via btusb_setup_intel())
even before the call of usermodehelper_enable(). Then
usermodehelper_read_trylock() returns an error and request_firmware()
spews WARN_ON() in the end.

This oneliner patch fixes the issue just by setting to UMH_FREEZING
state again before restarting tasks, so that the call of
request_firmware() will be blocked until the end of this function
instead of returning an error.

Fixes: 247bc03742 (PM / Sleep: Mitigate race between the freezer and request_firmware())

Todd E Brandt bb3632c610 PM / sleep: trace events for suspend/resume
Adds trace events that give finer resolution into suspend/resume. These
events are graphed in the timelines generated by the analyze_suspend.py
script. They represent large areas of time consumed that are typical to
suspend and resume.

The event is triggered by calling the function "trace_suspend_resume"
with three arguments: a string (the name of the event to be displayed
in the timeline), an integer (case specific number, such as the power
state or cpu number), and a boolean (where true is used to denote the start
of the timeline event, and false to denote the end).

The suspend_resume trace event reproduces the data that the machine_suspend
trace event did, so the latter has been removed.

Rafael J. Wysocki 0399d4db3e PM / sleep: Introduce command line argument for sleep state enumeration
On some systems the platform doesn't support neither
PM_SUSPEND_MEM nor PM_SUSPEND_STANDBY, so PM_SUSPEND_FREEZE is the
only available system sleep state. However, some user space frameworks
only use the "mem" and (sometimes) "standby" sleep state labels, so
the users of those systems need to modify user space in order to be
able to use system suspend at all and that is not always possible.

For this reason, add a new kernel command line argument,
relative_sleep_states, allowing the users of those systems to change
the way in which the kernel assigns labels to system sleep states.
Namely, for relative_sleep_states=1, the "mem", "standby" and "freeze"
labels will enumerate the available system sleem states from the
deepest to the shallowest, respectively, so that "mem" is always
present in /sys/power/state and the other state strings may or may
not be presend depending on what is supported by the platform.

Update system sleep states documentation to reflect this change.

(PM_SUSPEND_STANDBY, PM_SUSPEND_MEM), a given state is either

need to check it.

Also do not use valid_state() for PM_SUSPEND_FREEZE, which is always
valid, and move the pm_test_level validity check for PM_SUSPEND_FREEZE
directly into enter_state().

It also can be addressed in the same way, by holding the ACPI scan

"freeze" sleep state are needed for this purpose.

Rafael J. Wysocki 2d984ad132 PM / QoS: Introcuce latency tolerance device PM QoS type
Add a new latency tolerance device PM QoS type to be use for
specifying active state (RPM_ACTIVE) memory access (DMA) latency
tolerance requirements for devices. It may be used to prevent
hardware from choosing overly aggressive energy-saving operation
modes (causing too much latency to appear) for the whole platform.

This feature reqiures hardware support, so it only will be
available for devices having a new .set_latency_tolerance()
callback in struct dev_pm_info populated, in which case the
routine pointed to by it should implement whatever is necessary
to transfer the effective requirement value to the hardware.

Whenever the effective latency tolerance changes for the device,
its .set_latency_tolerance() callback will be executed and the
effective value will be passed to it. If that value is negative,
which means that the list of latency tolerance requirements for
the device is empty, the callback is expected to switch the
underlying hardware latency tolerance control mechanism to an
autonomous mode if available. If that value is PM_QOS_LATENCY_ANY,
in turn, and the hardware supports a special "no requirement"
setting, the callback is expected to use it. That allows software
to prevent the hardware from automatically updating the device's
latency tolerance in response to its power state changes (e.g. during
transitions from D3cold to D0), which generally may be done in the
autonomous latency tolerance control mode.

If .set_latency_tolerance() is present for the device, a new
pm_qos_latency_tolerance_us attribute will be present in the
devivce's power directory in sysfs. Then, user space can use
that attribute to specify its latency tolerance requirement for
the device, if any. Writing "any" to it means "no requirement, but
do not let the hardware control latency tolerance" and writing
"auto" to it allows the hardware to be switched to the autonomous
mode if there are no other requirements from the kernel side in the
device's list.

This changeset includes a fix from Mika Westerberg.

Merge tag 'pm+acpi-3.14-rc1' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/rafael/linux-pm

Pull ACPI and power management updates from Rafael Wysocki:
"As far as the number of commits goes, the top spot belongs to ACPI
this time with cpufreq in the second position and a handful of PM
core, PNP and cpuidle updates. They are fixes and cleanups mostly, as
usual, with a couple of new features in the mix.

The most visible change is probably that we will create struct
acpi_device objects (visible in sysfs) for all devices represented in
the ACPI tables regardless of their status and there will be a new
sysfs attribute under those objects allowing user space to check that
  status via _STA.

Consequently, ACPI device eject or generally hot-removal will not
delete those objects, unless the table containing the corresponding
namespace nodes is unloaded, which is extremely rare. Also ACPI
container hotplug will be handled quite a bit differently and cpufreq
will support CPU boost ("turbo") generically and not only in the
  acpi-cpufreq driver.

  Specifics:

   - ACPI core changes to make it create a struct acpi_device object for
every device represented in the ACPI tables during all namespace
scans regardless of the current status of that device. In
accordance with this, ACPI hotplug operations will not delete those
objects, unless the underlying ACPI tables go away.

   - On top of the above, new sysfs attribute for ACPI device objects

execution of _STA for its ACPI object. From Srinivas Pandruvada.

   - ACPI core hotplug changes reducing code duplication, integrating
the PCI root hotplug with the core and reworking container hotplug.

   - ACPI core simplifications making it use ACPI_COMPANION() in the

Santosh Shilimkar c2f69cdafe kernel/power/snapshot.c: use memblock apis for early memory allocations
Switch to memblock interfaces for early memory allocator instead of
bootmem allocator. No functional change in beahvior than what it is in
current code from bootmem users points of view.

Archs already converted to NO_BOOTMEM now directly use memblock
interfaces instead of bootmem wrappers build on top of memblock. And
the archs which still uses bootmem, these new apis just fallback to
exiting bootmem APIs.

Bjørn Mork 362e77d1cb PM / hibernate: Call platform_leave() in suspend path too
Since create_image() only executes platform_leave() if in_suspend is
not set, enable_nonboot_cpus() is run by it with EC transactions
blocked (on ACPI systems) in the image creation code path (that is,
for in_suspend set), which may cause CPU online to fail for the CPUs
in question. In particular, this causes the acpi_cpufreq driver's
initialization to fail for those CPUs on some systems with the
following dmesg:

 cpufreq: adding CPU 1

the first invocation of snapshot_open() would set the free_bitmaps
flag in snapshot_state, which is a static variable. That flag
wouldn't be cleared later and the second invocation of snapshot_open()
would just leave it like that, so the subsequent snapshot_release()
would see data->frozen set and free_basic_memory_bitmaps() would be
called unnecessarily.

To prevent that from happening clear data->free_bitmaps in
snapshot_open() when the file is being opened for reading (hibernate
mode).

In addition to that, replace the BUG_ON() in free_basic_memory_bitmaps()
with a WARN_ON() as the kernel can continue just fine if the condition
checked by that macro occurs.

Aaron Lu fd432b9f8c PM / hibernate: Avoid overflow in hibernate_preallocate_memory()
When system has a lot of highmem (e.g. 16GiB using a 32 bits kernel),
the code to calculate how much memory we need to preallocate in
normal zone may cause overflow. As Leon has analysed:

It looks that during computing 'alloc' variable there is overflow:
 alloc = (3943404 - 1970542) - 1978280 = -5418 (signed)
And this function goes to err_out.

Fix this by avoiding that overflow.

Russ Dill d3c345dbc7 PM / hibernate: Move software_resume to late_initcall_sync
software_resume is being called after deferred_probe_initcall in

Benoit Goby 70fea60d88 PM / Sleep: Detect device suspend/resume lockup and log event
Rather than hard-lock the kernel, dump the suspend/resume thread stack
and panic() to capture a message in pstore when a driver takes too long
to suspend/resume. Default suspend/resume watchdog timeout is set to 12
seconds to be longer than the usbhid 10 second timeout, but could be
changed at compile time.

Exclude from the watchdog the time spent waiting for children that
are resumed asynchronously and time every device, whether or not they
resumed synchronously.

This patch is targeted for mobile devices where a suspend/resume lockup
could cause a system reboot. Information about failing device can be
retrieved in subsequent boot session by mounting pstore and inspecting
the log. Laptops with EFI-enabled pstore could also benefit from
this feature.

The hardware watchdog timer is likely suspended during this time and
couldn't be relied upon. The soft-lockup detector would eventually tell
that tasks are not scheduled, but would provide little context as to why.
The patch hence uses system timer and assumes it is still active while the
devices are suspended/resumed.

This feature can be enabled/disabled during kernel configuration.

This change is based on earlier work by San Mehat.

Rafael J. Wysocki aab1728915 PM / hibernate: Fix user space driven resume regression
Recent commit 8fd37a4 (PM / hibernate: Create memory bitmaps after
freezing user space) broke the resume part of the user space driven
hibernation (s2disk), because I forgot that the resume utility
loaded the image into memory without freezing user space (it still
freezes tasks after loading the image). This means that during user
space driven resume we need to create the memory bitmaps at the
"device open" time rather than at the "freeze tasks" time, so make
that happen (that's a special case anyway, so it needs to be treated
in a special way).

Linus Torvalds 02b9735c12 ACPI and power management fixes for 3.12-rc1
1) ACPI-based PCI hotplug (ACPIPHP) fixes related to spurious events

After the recent ACPIPHP changes we've seen some interesting breakage
on a system that triggers device check notifications during boot for
non-existing devices. Although those notifications are really
spurious, we should be able to deal with them nevertheless and that
shouldn't introduce too much overhead. Four commits to make that
   work properly.

  2) Memory hotplug and hibernation mutual exclusion rework

This was maent to be a cleanup, but it happens to fix a classical
ABBA deadlock between system suspend/hibernation and ACPI memory
hotplug which is possible if they are started roughly at the same
time. Three commits rework memory hotplug so that it doesn't
acquire pm_mutex and make hibernation use device_hotplug_lock
which prevents it from racing with memory hotplug.

  3) ACPI Intel LPSS (Low-Power Subsystem) driver crash fix

The ACPI LPSS driver crashes during boot on Apple Macbook Air with
Haswell that has slightly unusual BIOS configuration in which one
of the LPSS device's _CRS method doesn't return all of the information
expected by the driver. Fix from Mika Westerberg, for stable.

  4) ACPICA fix related to Store->ArgX operation

AML interpreter fix for obscure breakage that causes AML to be

  5) ACPI core fix for PCI ACPI device objects lookup

There still are cases in which there is more than one ACPI device
object matching a given PCI device and we don't choose the one that
the BIOS expects us to choose, so this makes the lookup take more
criteria into account in those cases.

  6) Fix to prevent cpuidle from crashing in some rare cases

If the result of cpuidle_get_driver() is NULL, which can happen on
some systems, cpuidle_driver_ref() will crash trying to use that
pointer and the Daniel Fu's fix prevents that from happening.

  7) cpufreq fixes related to CPU hotplug

Stephen Boyd reported a number of concurrency problems with cpufreq
related to CPU hotplug which are addressed by a series of fixes
from Srivatsa S Bhat and Viresh Kumar.

  8) cpufreq fix for time conversion in time_in_state attribute

Time conversion carried out by cpufreq when user space attempts to
   read /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu*/cpufreq/stats/time_in_state won't
work correcty if cputime_t doesn't map directly to jiffies. Fix
   from Andreas Schwab.

  9) Revert of a troublesome cpufreq commit

Commit 7c30ed5 (cpufreq: make sure frequency transitions are
serialized) was intended to address some known concurrency problems
in cpufreq related to the ordering of transitions, but unfortunately
it introduced several problems of its own, so I decided to revert it
now and address the original problems later in a more robust way.

 11) cpufreq fixes related to system suspend/resume

The recent cpufreq changes that made it preserve CPU sysfs attributes
over suspend/resume cycles introduced a possible NULL pointer
dereference that caused it to crash during the second attempt to
suspend. Three commits from Srivatsa S Bhat fix that problem and a
   couple of related issues.

 12) cpufreq locking fix

cpufreq_policy_restore() should acquire the lock for reading, but
it acquires it for writing. Fix from Lan Tianyu.

Rafael J. Wysocki 942f40155a PM / hibernate / memory hotplug: Rework mutual exclusion
Since all of the memory hotplug operations have to be carried out
under device_hotplug_lock, they won't need to acquire pm_mutex if
device_hotplug_lock is held around hibernation.

For this reason, make the hibernation code acquire
device_hotplug_lock after freezing user space processes and
release it before thawing them. At the same tim drop the
lock_system_sleep() and unlock_system_sleep() calls from
lock_memory_hotplug() and unlock_memory_hotplug(), respectively.

Rafael J. Wysocki 8fd37a4c98 PM / hibernate: Create memory bitmaps after freezing user space
The hibernation core uses special memory bitmaps during image
creation and restoration and traditionally those bitmaps are
allocated before freezing tasks, because in the past GFP_KERNEL
allocations might not work after all tasks had been frozen.

However, this is an anachronism, because hibernation_snapshot()
now calls hibernate_preallocate_memory() which allocates memory
for the image upfront anyway, so the memory bitmaps may be
allocated after freezing user space safely.

For this reason, move all of the create_basic_memory_bitmaps()
calls after freeze_processes() and all of the corresponding
free_basic_memory_bitmaps() calls before thaw_processes().

This will allow us to hold device_hotplug_lock around hibernation
without the need to worry about freezing issues with user space
processes attempting to acquire it via sysfs attributes after the
creation of memory bitmaps and before the freezing of tasks.

Stephen Boyd 40fea92ffb PM / QoS: Fix workqueue deadlock when using pm_qos_update_request_timeout()
pm_qos_update_request_timeout() updates a qos and then schedules
a delayed work item to bring the qos back down to the default
after the timeout. When the work item runs, pm_qos_work_fn() will
call pm_qos_update_request() and deadlock because it tries to
cancel itself via cancel_delayed_work_sync(). Future callers of
that qos will also hang waiting to cancel the work that is
canceling itself. Let's extract the little bit of code that does
the real work of pm_qos_update_request() and call it from the
work function so that we don't deadlock.

Before ed1ac6e (PM: don't use [delayed_]work_pending()) this didn't
happen because the work function wouldn't try to cancel itself.

Colin Cross 2b44c4db2e freezer: set PF_SUSPEND_TASK flag on tasks that call freeze_processes
Calling freeze_processes sets a global flag that will cause any
process that calls try_to_freeze to enter the refrigerator. It
skips sending a signal to the current task, but if the current
task ever hits try_to_freeze, all threads will be frozen and the
system will deadlock.

Set a new flag, PF_SUSPEND_TASK, on the task that calls
freeze_processes. The flag notifies the freezer that the thread
is involved in suspend and should not be frozen. Also add a
WARN_ON in thaw_processes if the caller does not have the
PF_SUSPEND_TASK flag set to catch if a different task calls
thaw_processes than the one that called freeze_processes, leaving
a task with PF_SUSPEND_TASK permanently set on it.

Threads that spawn off a task with PF_SUSPEND_TASK set (which
swsusp does) will also have PF_SUSPEND_TASK set, preventing them
from freezing while they are helping with suspend, but they need
to be dead by the time suspend is triggered, otherwise they may
run when userspace is expected to be frozen. Add a WARN_ON in
thaw_processes if more than one thread has the PF_SUSPEND_TASK
flag set.

Brandt, Todd E 3831261eb0 PM / Sleep: increase ftrace coverage in suspend/resume
Change where ftrace is disabled and re-enabled during system
suspend/resume to allow tracing of device driver pm callbacks.
Ftrace will now be turned off when suspend reaches
disable_nonboot_cpus() instead of at the very beginning of system
suspend.

Ftrace was disabled during suspend/resume back in 2008 by
Steven Rostedt as he discovered there was a conflict in the
enable_nonboot_cpus() call (see commit f42ac38 "ftrace: disable
tracing for suspend to ram"). This change preserves his fix by
disabling ftrace, but only at the function where it is known
to cause problems.

The new change allows tracing of the device level code for better
debug.

immediately if it is not SYSTEM_RUNNING.

This prevents the following breakage from happening (scenario from
Zhang Yanmin):

Kernel starts shutdown and calls all device driver's shutdown
callback. When a driver's shutdown is called, the last wakelock is
released and suspend-to-ram starts. However, as some driver's shut
down callbacks already shut down devices and disabled runtime pm,
the suspend-to-ram calls driver's suspend callback without noticing
that device is already off and causes crash.

Merge tag 'pm+acpi-3.11-rc1' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/rafael/linux-pm

Pull power management and ACPI updates from Rafael Wysocki:
"This time the total number of ACPI commits is slightly greater than
the number of cpufreq commits, but Viresh Kumar (who works on cpufreq)
remains the most active patch submitter.

To me, the most significant change is the addition of offline/online
device operations to the driver core (with the Greg's blessing) and
the related modifications of the ACPI core hotplug code. Next are the
freezer updates from Colin Cross that should make the freezing of
tasks a bit less heavy weight.

We also have a couple of regression fixes, a number of fixes for
issues that have not been identified as regressions, two new drivers
and a bunch of cleanups all over.

  Highlights:

   - Hotplug changes to support graceful hot-removal failures.

It sometimes is necessary to fail device hot-removal operations
gracefully if they cannot be carried out completely. For example,
if memory from a memory module being hot-removed has been allocated
for the kernel's own use and cannot be moved elsewhere, it's
desirable to fail the hot-removal operation in a graceful way
rather than to crash the kernel, but currenty a success or a kernel
crash are the only possible outcomes of an attempted memory
hot-removal. Needless to say, that is not a very attractive
alternative and it had to be addressed.

However, in order to make it work for memory, I first had to make
it work for CPUs and for this purpose I needed to modify the ACPI
processor driver. It's been split into two parts, a resident one
handling the low-level initialization/cleanup and a modular one
playing the actual driver's role (but it binds to the CPU system
device objects rather than to the ACPI device objects representing
processors). That's been sort of like a live brain surgery on a
     patient who's riding a bike.

So this is a little scary, but since we found and fixed a couple of
regressions it caused to happen during the early linux-next testing
(a month ago), nobody has complained.

As a bonus we remove some duplicated ACPI hotplug code, because the
ACPI-based CPU hotplug is now going to use the common ACPI hotplug
     code.

   - Lighter weight freezing of tasks.

These changes from Colin Cross and Mandeep Singh Baines are
targeted at making the freezing of tasks a bit less heavy weight
operation. They reduce the number of tasks woken up every time
during the freezing, by using the observation that the freezer
simply doesn't need to wake up some of them and wait for them all
to call refrigerator(). The time needed for the freezer to decide
to report a failure is reduced too.

Also reintroduced is the check causing a lockdep warining to
trigger when try_to_freeze() is called with locks held (which is
     generally unsafe and shouldn't happen).

   - cpufreq updates

First off, a commit from Srivatsa S Bhat fixes a resume regression
introduced during the 3.10 cycle causing some cpufreq sysfs
attributes to return wrong values to user space after resume. The
fix is kind of fresh, but also it's pretty obvious once Srivatsa
     has identified the root cause.

Second, we have a new freqdomain_cpus sysfs attribute for the
acpi-cpufreq driver to provide information previously available via
     related_cpus. From Lan Tianyu.

Finally, we fix a number of issues, mostly related to the
CPUFREQ_POSTCHANGE notifier and cpufreq Kconfig options and clean
up some code. The majority of changes from Viresh Kumar with bits
from Jacob Shin, Heiko Stübner, Xiaoguang Chen, Ezequiel Garcia,
     Arnd Bergmann, and Tang Yuantian.

   - ACPICA update

A usual bunch of updates from the ACPICA upstream.

During the 3.4 cycle we introduced support for ACPI 5 extended
sleep registers, but they are only supposed to be used if the
HW-reduced mode bit is set in the FADT flags and the code attempted
to use them without checking that bit. That caused suspend/resume
regressions to happen on some systems. Fix from Lv Zheng causes
those registers to be used only if the HW-reduced mode bit is set.

Apart from this some other ACPICA bugs are fixed and code cleanups
are made by Bob Moore, Tomasz Nowicki, Lv Zheng, Chao Guan, and
     Zhang Rui.

   - cpuidle updates

New driver for Xilinx Zynq processors is added by Michal Simek.

Multidriver support simplification, addition of some missing
kerneldoc comments and Kconfig-related fixes come from Daniel
     Lezcano.

   - ACPI power management updates

Changes to make suspend/resume work correctly in Xen guests from
Konrad Rzeszutek Wilk, sparse warning fix from Fengguang Wu and
cleanups and fixes of the ACPI device power state selection
     routine.

   - ACPI documentation updates

Some previously missing pieces of ACPI documentation are added by
Lv Zheng and Aaron Lu (hopefully, that will help people to
uderstand how the ACPI subsystem works) and one outdated doc is
     updated by Hanjun Guo.

   - Assorted ACPI updates

We finally nailed down the IA-64 issue that was the reason for
reverting commit 9f29ab11dd ("ACPI / scan: do not match drivers
against objects having scan handlers"), so we can fix it and move
the ACPI scan handler check added to the ACPI video driver back to
     the core.

A mechanism for adding CMOS RTC address space handlers is
introduced by Lan Tianyu to allow some EC-related breakage to be
     fixed on some systems.

A spec-compliant implementation of acpi_os_get_timer() is added by
     Mika Westerberg.

The evaluation of _STA is added to do_acpi_find_child() to avoid
situations in which a pointer to a disabled device object is
returned instead of an enabled one with the same _ADR value. From
     Jeff Wu.

Intel BayTrail PCH (Platform Controller Hub) support is added to
the ACPI driver for Intel Low-Power Subsystems (LPSS) and that
driver is modified to work around a couple of known BIOS issues.
Changes from Mika Westerberg and Heikki Krogerus.

The EC driver is fixed by Vasiliy Kulikov to use get_user() and
put_user() instead of dereferencing user space pointers blindly.

Code cleanups are made by Bjorn Helgaas, Nicholas Mazzuca and Toshi
     Kani.

   - Assorted power management updates

The "runtime idle" helper routine is changed to take the return
values of the callbacks executed by it into account and to call
rpm_suspend() if they return 0, which allows us to reduce the
overall code bloat a bit (by dropping some code that's not
necessary any more after that modification).

The runtime PM documentation is updated by Alan Stern (to reflect
     the "runtime idle" behavior change).

New trace points for PM QoS are added by Sahara
     (<keun-o.park@windriver.com>).

PM QoS documentation is updated by Lan Tianyu.

Code cleanups are made and minor issues are addressed by Bernie
Thompson, Bjorn Helgaas, Julius Werner, and Shuah Khan.

   - devfreq updates

New driver for the Exynos5-bus device from Abhilash Kesavan.

Minor cleanups, fixes and MAINTAINERS update from MyungJoo Ham,
Abhilash Kesavan, Paul Bolle, Rajagopal Venkat, and Wei Yongjun.

   - OMAP power management updates

Adaptive Voltage Scaling (AVS) SmartReflex voltage control driver
updates from Andrii Tseglytskyi and Nishanth Menon."

Linus Torvalds f317ff9eed Merge branch 'for-3.11' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/tj/wq
Pull workqueue changes from Tejun Heo:
"Surprisingly, Lai and I didn't break too many things implementing
custom pools and stuff last time around and there aren't any follow-up
  changes necessary at this point.

The only change in this pull request is Viresh's patches to make some
per-cpu workqueues to behave as unbound workqueues dependent on a boot
param whose default can be configured via a config option. This leads
to higher processing overhead / lower bandwidth as more work items are
bounced across CPUs; however, it can lead to noticeable powersave in
certain configurations - ~10% w/ idlish constant workload on a
  big.LITTLE configuration according to Viresh.

This is because per-cpu workqueues interfere with how the scheduler
perceives whether or not each CPU is idle by forcing pinned tasks on
them, which makes the scheduler's power-aware scheduling decisions
  less effective.

Its effectiveness is likely less pronounced on homogenous
configurations and this type of optimization can probably be made
automatic; however, the changes are pretty minimal and the affected
workqueues are clearly marked, so it's an easy gain for some
configurations for the time being with pretty unintrusive changes."

Shuah Khan 9dceefe483 PM / Sleep: Warn about system time after resume with pm_trace
pm_trace uses the system's Real Time Clock (RTC) to save the magic
number. The reason for this is that the RTC is the only reliably
available piece of hardware during resume operations where a value
can be set that will survive a reboot.

Consequence is that after a resume (even if it is successful) your
system clock will have a value corresponding to the magic number
instead of the correct date/time! It is therefore advisable to use
a program like ntp-date or rdate to reset the correct date/time from
an external time source when using this trace option.

There is no run-time message to warn users of the consequences of
enabling pm_trace. Adding a warning message to pm_trace_store()
will serve as a reminder to users to set the system date and time
after resume.

Julius Werner bb177fedd3 PM / Sleep: Print last wakeup source on failed wakeup_count write
Commit a938da06 introduced a useful little log message to tell
users/debuggers which wakeup source aborted a suspend. However,
this message is only printed if the abort happens during the
in-kernel suspend path (after writing /sys/power/state).

The full specification of the /sys/power/wakeup_count facility
allows user-space power managers to double-check if wakeups have
already happened before it actually tries to suspend (e.g. while it
was running user-space pre-suspend hooks), by writing the last known
wakeup_count value to /sys/power/wakeup_count. This patch changes
the sysfs handler for that node to also print said log message if
that write fails, so that we can figure out the offending wakeup
source for both kinds of suspend aborts.

Bernie Thompson 9350de06be PM / wakeup: Adjust messaging for wake events during suspend
This adds in a new message to the wakeup code which adds an
indication to the log that suspend was cancelled due to a wake event
occouring during the suspend sequence. It also adjusts the message
printed in suspend.c to reflect the potential that a suspend was
aborted, as opposed to a device failing to suspend.

Without these message adjustments one can end up with a kernel log
that says that a device failed to suspend with no actual device
suspend failures, which can be confusing to the log examiner.

Viresh Kumar cee22a1505 workqueues: Introduce new flag WQ_POWER_EFFICIENT for power oriented workqueues
Workqueues can be performance or power-oriented. Currently, most workqueues are
bound to the CPU they were created on. This gives good performance (due to cache
effects) at the cost of potentially waking up otherwise idle cores (Idle from
scheduler's perspective. Which may or may not be physically idle) just to
process some work. To save power, we can allow the work to be rescheduled on a
core that is already awake.

Workqueues created with the WQ_UNBOUND flag will allow some power savings.
However, we don't change the default behaviour of the system. To enable
power-saving behaviour, a new config option CONFIG_WQ_POWER_EFFICIENT needs to
be turned on. This option can also be overridden by the
workqueue.power_efficient boot parameter.

tj: Updated config description and comments. Renamed
    CONFIG_WQ_POWER_EFFICIENT to CONFIG_WQ_POWER_EFFICIENT_DEFAULT.

Zhang Rui c26b78a2d8 PM / sleep: invalidate TEST_CPUS and TEST_CORE support for freeze state
freeze state is a software suspend state that does not run into
low-level platform callbacks which may interact with BIOS.
And freeze state does not need to disable the processors.

But the current pm_test support misleads users because users
can enter freeze state with pm_test set to TEST_CPUS/TEST_CORE,
while this pm_test setting never takes actions.

So, invalidate TEST_CPUS/TEST_CORE for freeze state in this patch.
Then users will get an error instead, when trying to
enter freeze state with pm_test mode set to TEST_CPUS/TEST_CORE.

Li Fei 957d1282bb suspend: enable freeze timeout configuration through sys
At present, the value of timeout for freezing is 20s, which is
meaningless in case that one thread is frozen with mutex locked
and another thread is trying to lock the mutex, as this time of
freezing will fail unavoidably.
And if there is no new wakeup event registered, the system will
waste at most 20s for such meaningless trying of freezing.

With this patch, the value of timeout can be configured to smaller
value, so such meaningless trying of freezing will be aborted in
earlier time, and later freezing can be also triggered in earlier
time. And more power will be saved.
In normal case on mobile phone, it costs real little time to freeze
processes. On some platform, it only costs about 20ms to freeze
user space processes and 10ms to freeze kernel freezable threads.

Zhang Rui 7e73c5ae6e PM: Introduce suspend state PM_SUSPEND_FREEZE
PM_SUSPEND_FREEZE state is a general state that
does not need any platform specific support, it equals
frozen processes + suspended devices + idle processors.

Compared with PM_SUSPEND_MEMORY,
PM_SUSPEND_FREEZE saves less power
because the system is still in a running state.
PM_SUSPEND_FREEZE has less resume latency because it does not
touch BIOS, and the processors are in idle state.

Compared with RTPM/idle,
PM_SUSPEND_FREEZE saves more power as
1. the processor has longer sleep time because processes are frozen.
The deeper c-state the processor supports, more power saving we can get.
2. PM_SUSPEND_FREEZE uses system suspend code path, thus we can get
more power saving from the devices that does not have good RTPM support.

This state is useful for
1) platforms that do not have STR, or have a broken STR.
2) platforms that have an extremely low power idle state,
which can be used to replace STR.

The following describes how PM_SUSPEND_FREEZE state works.
1. echo freeze > /sys/power/state
2. the processes are frozen.
3. all the devices are suspended.
4. all the processors are blocked by a wait queue
5. all the processors idles and enters (Deep) c-state.
6. an interrupt fires.
7. a processor is woken up and handles the irq.
8. if it is a general event,
   a) the irq handler runs and quites.
   b) goto step 4.
9. if it is a real wake event, say, power button pressing, keyboard touch, mouse moving,
   a) the irq handler runs and activate the wakeup source
   b) wakeup_source_activate() notifies the wait queue.
   c) system starts resuming from PM_SUSPEND_FREEZE
10. all the devices are resumed.
11. all the processes are unfrozen.
12. system is back to working.

Known Issue:
The wakeup of this new PM_SUSPEND_FREEZE state may behave differently
from the previous suspend state.
Take ACPI platform for example, there are some GPEs that only enabled
when the system is in sleep state, to wake the system backk from S3/S4.
But we are not touching these GPEs during transition to PM_SUSPEND_FREEZE.
This means we may lose some wake event.
But on the other hand, as we do not disable all the Interrupts during
PM_SUSPEND_FREEZE, we may get some extra "wakeup" Interrupts, that are
not available for S3/S4.

The patches has been tested on an old Sony laptop, and here are the results:

Average Power:
1. RPTM/idle for half an hour:
   14.8W, 12.6W, 14.1W, 12.5W, 14.4W, 13.2W, 12.9W
2. Freeze for half an hour:
   11W, 10.4W, 9.4W, 11.3W 10.5W
3. RTPM/idle for three hours:
   11.6W
4. Freeze for three hours:
   10W
5. Suspend to Memory:
   0.5~0.9W

Average Resume Latency:
1. RTPM/idle with a black screen: (From pressing keyboard to screen back)
   Less than 0.2s
2. Freeze: (From pressing power button to screen back)
   2.50s
3. Suspend to Memory: (From pressing power button to screen back)
   4.33s

>From the results, we can see that all the platforms should benefit from
this patch, even if it does not have Low Power S0.

Linus Torvalds d206e09036 Merge branch 'for-3.8' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/tj/cgroup
Pull cgroup changes from Tejun Heo:
"A lot of activities on cgroup side. The big changes are focused on
  making cgroup hierarchy handling saner.

   - cgroup_rmdir() had peculiar semantics - it allowed cgroup
destruction to be vetoed by individual controllers and tried to
drain refcnt synchronously. The vetoing never worked properly and
caused good deal of contortions in cgroup. memcg was the last
reamining user. Michal Hocko removed the usage and cgroup_rmdir()
path has been simplified significantly. This was done in a
separate branch so that the memcg people can base further memcg
     changes on top.

   - The above allowed cleaning up cgroup lifecycle management and
implementation of generic cgroup iterators which are used to
     improve hierarchy support.

   - cgroup_freezer updated to allow migration in and out of a frozen
cgroup and handle hierarchy. If a cgroup is frozen, all descendant
     cgroups are frozen.

   - netcls_cgroup and netprio_cgroup updated to handle hierarchy
     properly.

   - Various fixes and cleanups.

   - Two merge commits. One to pull in memcg and rmdir cleanups (needed
to build iterators). The other pulled in cgroup/for-3.7-fixes for

Oleg Nesterov 5d8f72b55c freezer: change ptrace_stop/do_signal_stop to use freezable_schedule()
try_to_freeze_tasks() and cgroup_freezer rely on scheduler locks
to ensure that a task doing STOPPED/TRACED -> RUNNING transition
can't escape freezing. This mostly works, but ptrace_stop() does
not necessarily call schedule(), it can change task->state back to
RUNNING and check freezing() without any lock/barrier in between.

We could add the necessary barrier, but this patch changes
ptrace_stop() and do_signal_stop() to use freezable_schedule().
This fixes the race, freezer_count() and freezer_should_skip()
carefully avoid the race.

And this simplifies the code, try_to_freeze_tasks/update_if_frozen
no longer need to use task_is_stopped_or_traced() checks with the
non trivial assumptions. We can rely on the mechanism which was
specially designed to mark the sleeping task as "frozen enough".

v2: As Tejun pointed out, we can also change get_signal_to_deliver()
and move try_to_freeze() up before 'relock' label.

object will contain the head of a list of struct pm_qos_flags_request
objects representing all of the "flags" requests present for the
given device. Then, the effective_flags member of a struct
pm_qos_flags object will contain the bitwise OR of the flags members
of all the struct pm_qos_flags_request objects in the list.

Additionally, introduce helper function pm_qos_update_flags()
allowing the caller to manage the list of struct pm_qos_flags_request
pointed to by the list member of struct pm_qos_flags.

The flags are of type s32 so that the request's "value" field
is always of the same type regardless of what kind of request it
is (latency requests already have value fields of type s32).

pm_qos_get_value don't return a return code in all cases. It's sure that
anything interesting happend after BUG() but this prevent any compilation
warning.

[rjw: Chaneged the new return value to PM_QOS_DEFAULT_VALUE.]

Rafael J. Wysocki 77f827de07 PM / Domains: Add power off/on function for system core suspend stage
Introduce function pm_genpd_syscore_switch() and two wrappers around
it, pm_genpd_syscore_poweroff() and pm_genpd_syscore_poweron(),
allowing the callers to let the generic PM domains framework know
that the given device is not necessary any more and its PM domain
can be turned off (the former) or that the given device will be
required immediately, so its PM domain has to be turned on (the
latter) during the system core (syscore) stage of system suspend
(or hibernation) and resume.

These functions will be used for handling devices registered as
clock sources and clock event devices that belong to PM domains.

Rafael J. Wysocki 300d3739e8 Revert "NMI watchdog: fix for lockup detector breakage on resume"
Revert commit 45226e9 (NMI watchdog: fix for lockup detector breakage
on resume) which breaks resume from system suspend on my SH7372
Mackerel board (by causing a NULL pointer dereference to happen) and
is generally wrong, because it abuses the CPU hotplug functionality
in a shamelessly blatant way.

The original issue should be addressed through appropriate syscore
resume callback instead.

Sameer Nanda 45226e944c NMI watchdog: fix for lockup detector breakage on resume
On the suspend/resume path the boot CPU does not go though an
offline->online transition. This breaks the NMI detector post-resume
since it depends on PMU state that is lost when the system gets
suspended.

Fix this by forcing a CPU offline->online transition for the lockup
detector on the boot CPU during resume.

To provide more context, we enable NMI watchdog on Chrome OS. We have
seen several reports of systems freezing up completely which indicated
that the NMI watchdog was not firing for some reason.

Debugging further, we found a simple way of repro'ing system freezes --
issuing the command 'tasket 1 sh -c "echo nmilockup > /proc/breakme"'
after the system has been suspended/resumed one or more times.

With this patch in place, the system freeze result in panics, as
expected.

These panics provide a nice stack trace for us to debug the actual issue
causing the freeze.
