tty: remove file from tty_ldisc_ops::ioctl and compat_ioctl
After the previous patches, noone needs 'file' parameter in neither ioctl hook from tty_ldisc_ops. So remove 'file' from both of them. tty: remove file from tty_mode_ioctl
The only user of 'file' parameter in tty_mode_ioctl is a BUG_ON check. Provided it never crashed for anyone, it's an overkill to pass the parameter to tty_mode_ioctl only for this check. If we wanted to check 'file' there, we should handle it in more graceful way anyway. Not by a BUG == crash. tty: make tty_ldisc_ops::hangup return void
The documentation says that the return value of tty_ldisc_ops::hangup hook is ignored. And it really is, so there is no point for its return type to be int. Switch it to void and all the hooks too. slip/plip: use ndo_siocdevprivate
slip and plip both use a couple of SIOCDEVPRIVATE ioctl commands that overload the ifreq layout in a way that is incompatible with compat mode. Convert to use ndo_siocdevprivate to allow passing the data this way, but return an error in compat mode anyway because the private structure is still incompatible. This could be fixed as well to make compat work properly. Signed-off-by: Arnd Bergmann <arnd@arndb.de> Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net> |

TTY / Serial patches for 5.14-rc1
Here is the big set of tty and serial driver patches for 5.14-rc1. A bit more than normal, but nothing major, lots of cleanups. Highlights are: - lots of tty api cleanups and mxser driver cleanups from Jiri - build warning fixes - various serial driver updates - coding style cleanups - various tty driver minor fixes and updates - removal of broken and disable r3964 line discipline (finally!) All of these have been in linux-next for a while with no reported issues. tty: no checking of tty_unregister_ldisc
tty_unregister_ldisc now returns 0 = success. No need to check the return value. In fact, the users only warned if an error occured and didn't do anything useful anyway -- the ldisc module was unloaded in any case. tty: make tty_ldisc_ops a param in tty_unregister_ldisc
Make tty_unregister_ldisc symmetric to tty_register_ldisc by accepting struct tty_ldisc_ops as a parameter instead of ldisc number. tty: set tty_ldisc_ops::num statically
There is no reason to pass the ldisc number to tty_register_ldisc separately. Just set it in the already defined tty_ldisc_ops in all the ldiscs. This simplifies tty_register_ldisc a bit too (no need to set the num member there). tty: remove TTY_LDISC_MAGIC
First, it is never checked. Second, use of it as a debugging aid is at least questionable. With the current tools, I don't think anyone used this kind of thing for debugging purposes for years. On the top of that, e.g. serdev does not set this field of tty_ldisc_ops at all. So get rid of this legacy. slip: make slhc_compress() more robust against malicious packets
Before accessing various fields in IPV4 network header

- Has IP version 4 (ip->version == 4)
- Has not a silly network length (ip->ihl >= 5)
- Is big enough to hold network and transport headers
- Has not a silly TCP header size (th->doff >= sizeof(struct tcphdr) / 4)

can, slip: Protect tty->disc_data in write_wakeup and close with RCU
write_wakeup can happen in parallel with close/hangup where tty->disc_data is set to NULL and the netdevice is freed thus also freeing disc_data. write_wakeup accesses disc_data so we must prevent close from freeing the netdev while write_wakeup has a non-NULL view of tty->disc_data. We also need to make sure that accesses to disc_data are atomic. Which can all be done with RCU. This problem was found by Syzkaller on SLCAN, but the same issue is reproducible with the SLIP line discipline using an LTP test based on the Syzkaller reproducer. A fix which didn't use RCU was posted by Hillf Danton. Fixes: |

slip: Fix use-after-free Read in slip_open
Slip_open doesn't clean-up device which registration failed from the
slip_devs device list. On next open after failure this list is iterated
and freed device is accessed. Fix this by calling sl_free_netdev in error
path.

slip: make slhc_free() silently accept an error pointer
This way, slhc_free() accepts what slhc_init() returns, whether that is an error or not. In particular, the pattern in sl_alloc_bufs() is slcomp = slhc_init(16, 16); ... slhc_free(slcomp); for the error handling path, and rather than complicate that code, just make it ok to always free what was returned by the init function. That's what the code used to do before commit |

change semantics of ldisc ->compat_ioctl()
First of all, make it return int. Returning long when native method had never allowed that is ridiculous and inconvenient. More importantly, change the caller; if ldisc ->compat_ioctl() is NULL or returns -ENOIOCTLCMD, tty_compat_ioctl() will try to feed cmd and compat_ptr(arg) to ldisc's native ->ioctl(). That simplifies ->compat_ioctl() instances quite a bit - they only need to deal with ioctls that are neither generic tty ones (those would get shunted off to tty_ioctl()) nor simple compat pointer ones. Note that something like TCFLSH won't reach ->compat_ioctl(), even if ldisc ->ioctl() does handle it - it will be recognized earlier and passed to tty_ioctl() (and ultimately - ldisc ->ioctl()). For many ldiscs it means that NULL ->compat_ioctl() does the right thing. Those where it won't serve (see e.g. n_r3964.c) are also easily dealt with - we need to handle the numeric-argument ioctls (calling the native instance) and, if such would exist, the ioctls that need layout conversion, etc. All in-tree ldiscs dealt with. treewide: kzalloc() -> kcalloc()
The kzalloc() function has a 2-factor argument form, kcalloc(). This patch replaces cases of: kzalloc(a * b, gfp) with: kcalloc(a * b, gfp) as well as handling cases of: kzalloc(a * b * c, gfp) with: kzalloc(array3_size(a, b, c), gfp) as it's slightly less ugly than: kzalloc_array(array_size(a, b), c, gfp) This does, however, attempt to ignore constant size factors like: kzalloc(4 * 1024, gfp) though any constants defined via macros get caught up in the conversion. Any factors with a sizeof() of "unsigned char", "char", and "u8" were dropped, since they're redundant. But if the state index points to a rstate which is unitialized, i.e. filled with zeros, it gets stuck in an infinite loop inside ip_fast_csum trying to compute the ip checsum of a header with zero length. 89.666953: <2> [<ffffff9dd3e94d38>] slhc_uncompress+0x464/0x468 89.666965: <2> [<ffffff9dd3e87d88>] ppp_receive_nonmp_frame+0x3b4/0x65c 89.666978: <2> [<ffffff9dd3e89dd4>] ppp_receive_frame+0x64/0x7e0 89.666991: <2> [<ffffff9dd3e8a708>] ppp_input+0x104/0x198 89.667005: <2> [<ffffff9dd3e93868>] pppopns_recv_core+0x238/0x370 89.667027: <2> [<ffffff9dd4428fc8>] __sk_receive_skb+0xdc/0x250 89.667040: <2> [<ffffff9dd3e939e4>] pppopns_recv+0x44/0x60 89.667053: <2> [<ffffff9dd4426848>] __sock_queue_rcv_skb+0x16c/0x24c 89.667065: <2> [<ffffff9dd4426954>] sock_queue_rcv_skb+0x2c/0x38 89.667085: <2> [<ffffff9dd44f7358>] raw_rcv+0x124/0x154 89.667098: <2> [<ffffff9dd44f7568>] raw_local_deliver+0x1e0/0x22c 89.667117: <2> [<ffffff9dd44c8ba0>] ip_local_deliver_finish+0x70/0x24c 89.667131: <2> [<ffffff9dd44c92f4>] ip_local_deliver+0x100/0x10c ./scripts/faddr2line vmlinux slhc_uncompress+0x464/0x468 output: ip_fast_csum at arch/arm64/include/asm/checksum.h:40 (inlined by) slhc_uncompress at drivers/net/slip/slhc.c:615 Adding a variable to indicate if the current rstate is initialized. treewide: setup_timer() -> timer_setup()
This converts all remaining cases of the old setup_timer() API into using timer_setup(), where the callback argument is the structure already holding the struct timer_list. These should have no behavioral changes, since they just change which pointer is passed into the callback with the same available pointers after conversion. It handles the following examples, in addition to some other variations. Casting from unsigned long: void my_callback(unsigned long data) { struct something *ptr = (struct something *)data; ... } ... setup_timer(&ptr->my_timer, my_callback, ptr); and forced object casts: void my_callback(struct something *ptr) { ... } ... setup_timer(&ptr->my_timer, my_callback, (unsigned long)ptr); become: void my_callback(struct timer_list *t) { struct something *ptr = from_timer(ptr, t, my_timer); ... } ... timer_setup(&ptr->my_timer, my_callback, 0); Direct function assignments: void my_callback(unsigned long data) { struct something *ptr = (struct something *)data; ... } ... ptr->my_timer.function = my_callback; have a temporary cast added, along with converting the args: void my_callback(struct timer_list *t) { struct something *ptr = from_timer(ptr, t, my_timer); ... } ... ptr->my_timer.function = (TIMER_FUNC_TYPE)my_callback; And finally, callbacks without a data assignment: void my_callback(unsigned long data) { ... } ... setup_timer(&ptr->my_timer, my_callback, 0); have their argument renamed to verify they're unused during conversion: void my_callback(struct timer_list *unused) { ... } ... timer_setup(&ptr->my_timer, my_callback, 0); The conversion is done with the following Coccinelle script: spatch --very-quiet --all-includes --include-headers \ -I ./arch/x86/include -I ./arch/x86/include/generated \ -I ./include -I ./arch/x86/include/uapi \ -I ./arch/x86/include/generated/uapi -I ./include/uapi \ -I ./include/generated/uapi --include ./include/linux/kconfig.h \ --dir . \ --cocci-file ~/src/data/timer_setup.cocci @fix_address_of@ expression e; License cleanup: add SPDX GPL-2.0 license identifier to files with no license
Many source files in the tree are missing licensing information, which makes it harder for compliance tools to determine the correct license. By default all files without license information are under the default license of the kernel, which is GPL version 2. Update the files which contain no license information with the 'GPL-2.0' SPDX license identifier. The SPDX identifier is a legally binding shorthand, which can be used instead of the full boiler plate text. This patch is based on work done by Thomas Gleixner and Kate Stewart and Philippe Ombredanne. How this work was done: Patches were generated and checked against linux-4.14-rc6 for a subset of the use cases: - file had no licensing information it it. - file was a */uapi/* one with no licensing information in it, - file was a */uapi/* one with existing licensing information, Further patches will be generated in subsequent months to fix up cases where non-standard license headers were used, and references to license had to be inferred by heuristics based on keywords. The analysis to determine which SPDX License Identifier to be applied to a file was done in a spreadsheet of side by side results from of the output of two independent scanners (ScanCode & Windriver) producing SPDX tag:value files created by Philippe Ombredanne. Philippe prepared the base worksheet, and did an initial spot review of a few 1000 files. The 4.13 kernel was the starting point of the analysis with 60,537 files assessed. Kate Stewart did a file by file comparison of the scanner results in the spreadsheet to determine which SPDX license identifier(s) to be applied to the file. She confirmed any determination that was not immediately clear with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. Criteria used to select files for SPDX license identifier tagging was: - Files considered eligible had to be source code files. - Make and config files were included as candidates if they contained >5 lines of source - File already had some variant of a license header in it (even if <5 lines). All documentation files were explicitly excluded. The following heuristics were used to determine which SPDX license identifiers to apply. - when both scanners couldn't find any license traces, file was considered to have no license information in it, and the top level COPYING file license applied. For non */uapi/* files that summary was: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------- GPL-2.0 11139 and resulted in the first patch in this series. If that file was a */uapi/* path one, it was "GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note" otherwise it was "GPL-2.0". Results of that was: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------- GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 930 and resulted in the second patch in this series. - if a file had some form of licensing information in it, and was one of the */uapi/* ones, it was denoted with the Linux-syscall-note if any GPL family license was found in the file or had no licensing in it (per prior point). Results summary: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------ GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 270 GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 169 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-2-Clause) 21 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 17 LGPL-2.1+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 15 GPL-1.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 14 ((GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 5 LGPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 4 LGPL-2.1 WITH Linux-syscall-note 3 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR MIT) 3 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) AND MIT) 1 and that resulted in the third patch in this series. - when the two scanners agreed on the detected license(s), that became the concluded license(s). - when there was disagreement between the two scanners (one detected a license but the other didn't, or they both detected different licenses) a manual inspection of the file occurred. - In most cases a manual inspection of the information in the file resulted in a clear resolution of the license that should apply (and which scanner probably needed to revisit its heuristics). - When it was not immediately clear, the license identifier was confirmed with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. - If there was any question as to the appropriate license identifier, the file was flagged for further research and to be revisited later in time. In total, over 70 hours of logged manual review was done on the spreadsheet to determine the SPDX license identifiers to apply to the source files by Kate, Philippe, Thomas and, in some cases, confirmation by lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. Kate also obtained a third independent scan of the 4.13 code base from FOSSology, and compared selected files where the other two scanners disagreed against that SPDX file, to see if there was new insights. The Windriver scanner is based on an older version of FOSSology in part, so they are related. Thomas did random spot checks in about 500 files from the spreadsheets for the uapi headers and agreed with SPDX license identifier in the files he inspected. For the non-uapi files Thomas did random spot checks in about 15000 files. In initial set of patches against 4.14-rc6, 3 files were found to have copy/paste license identifier errors, and have been fixed to reflect the correct identifier. Additionally Philippe spent 10 hours this week doing a detailed manual inspection and review of the 12,461 patched files from the initial patch version early this week with: - a full scancode scan run, collecting the matched texts, detected license ids and scores - reviewing anything where there was a license detected (about 500+ files) to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct - reviewing anything where there was no detection but the patch license was not GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct This produced a worksheet with 20 files needing minor correction. This worksheet was then exported into 3 different .csv files for the different types of files to be modified. These .csv files were then reviewed by Greg. Thomas wrote a script to parse the csv files and add the proper SPDX tag to the file, in the format that the file expected. This script was further refined by Greg based on the output to detect more types of files automatically and to distinguish between header and source .c files (which need different comment types.) Finally Greg ran the script using the .csv files to generate the patches. net: Fix inconsistent teardown and release of private netdev state.
Network devices can allocate reasources and private memory using netdev_ops->ndo_init(). However, the release of these resources can occur in one of two different places. Either netdev_ops->ndo_uninit() or netdev->destructor(). The decision of which operation frees the resources depends upon whether it is necessary for all netdev refs to be released before it is safe to perform the freeing. netdev_ops->ndo_uninit() presumably can occur right after the NETDEV_UNREGISTER notifier completes and the unicast and multicast address lists are flushed. netdev->destructor(), on the other hand, does not run until the netdev references all go away. Further complicating the situation is that netdev->destructor() almost universally does also a free_netdev(). This creates a problem for the logic in register_netdevice(). Because all callers of register_netdevice() manage the freeing of the netdev, and invoke free_netdev(dev) if register_netdevice() fails. If netdev_ops->ndo_init() succeeds, but something else fails inside of register_netdevice(), it does call ndo_ops->ndo_uninit(). But it is not able to invoke netdev->destructor(). This is because netdev->destructor() will do a free_netdev() and then the caller of register_netdevice() will do the same. However, this means that the resources that would normally be released by netdev->destructor() will not be. Over the years drivers have added local hacks to deal with this, by invoking their destructor parts by hand when register_netdevice() fails. Many drivers do not try to deal with this, and instead we have leaks. Let's close this hole by formalizing the distinction between what private things need to be freed up by netdev->destructor() and whether the driver needs unregister_netdevice() to perform the free_netdev(). netdev->priv_destructor() performs all actions to free up the private resources that used to be freed by netdev->destructor(), except for free_netdev(). netdev->needs_free_netdev is a boolean that indicates whether free_netdev() should be done at the end of unregister_netdevice(). Now, register_netdevice() can sanely release all resources after ndo_ops->ndo_init() succeeds, by invoking both ndo_ops->ndo_uninit() and netdev->priv_destructor(). And at the end of unregister_netdevice(), we invoke netdev->priv_destructor() and optionally call free_netdev(). Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net> |
