Lukas Wunner e8a6123e9e x86/platform/intel-mid: Retrofit pci_platform_pm_ops ->get_state hook
Commit cc7cc02bad ("PCI: Query platform firmware for device power
state") augmented struct pci_platform_pm_ops with a ->get_state hook and
implemented it for acpi_pci_platform_pm, the only pci_platform_pm_ops
existing till v4.7.

However v4.8 introduced another pci_platform_pm_ops for Intel Mobile
Internet Devices with commit 5823d0893e ("x86/platform/intel-mid: Add
Power Management Unit driver"). It is missing the ->get_state hook,
which is fatal since pci_set_platform_pm() enforces its presence. Andy
Shevchenko reports that without the present commit, such a device
"crashes without even a character printed out on serial console and
reboots (since watchdog)".

Retrofit mid_pci_platform_pm with the missing callback to fix the
breakage.

Josh Poimboeuf bb5e5ce545 x86/dumpstack: Remove kernel text addresses from stack dump
Printing kernel text addresses in stack dumps is of questionable value,
especially now that address randomization is becoming common.

It can be a security issue because it leaks kernel addresses. It also
affects the usefulness of the stack dump. Linus says:

"I actually spend time cleaning up commit messages in logs, because
useless data that isn't actually information (random hex numbers) is
  actively detrimental.

It makes commit logs less legible.

It also makes it harder to parse dumps.

It's not useful. That makes it actively bad.

I probably look at more oops reports than most people. I have not
found the hex numbers useful for the last five years, because they are
  just randomized crap.

The stack content thing just makes code scroll off the screen etc, for
  example."

The only real downside to removing these addresses is that they can be
used to disambiguate duplicate symbol names. However such cases are
rare, and the context of the stack dump should be enough to be able to
figure it out.

There's now a 'faddr2line' script which can be used to convert a
function address to a file name and line:

  $ ./scripts/faddr2line ~/k/vmlinux write_sysrq_trigger+0x51/0x60
  write_sysrq_trigger+0x51/0x60:
  write_sysrq_trigger at drivers/tty/sysrq.c:1098

Or gdb can be used:

  $ echo "list *write_sysrq_trigger+0x51" |gdb ~/k/vmlinux |grep "is in"
  (gdb) 0xffffffff815b5d83 is in driver_probe_device (/home/jpoimboe/git/linux/drivers/base/dd.c:378).

(But note that when there are duplicate symbol names, gdb will only show
the first symbol it finds. faddr2line is recommended over gdb because
it handles duplicates and it also does function size checking.)

Here's an example of what a stack dump looks like after this change:

Alex Thorlton caef78b6cd x86/platform/UV: Fix support for EFI_OLD_MEMMAP after BIOS callback updates
Some time ago, we brought our UV BIOS callback code up to speed with the
new EFI memory mapping scheme, in commit:

    d1be84a232 ("x86/uv: Update uv_bios_call() to use efi_call_virt_pointer()")

By leveraging some changes that I made to a few of the EFI runtime
callback mechanisms, in commit:

    80e7559607 ("efi: Convert efi_call_virt() to efi_call_virt_pointer()")

This got everything running smoothly on UV, with the new EFI mapping
code. However, this left one, small loose end, in that EFI_OLD_MEMMAP
(a.k.a. efi=old_map) will no longer work on UV, on kernels that include
the aforementioned changes.

At the time this was not a major issue (in fact, it still really isn't),
but there's no reason that EFI_OLD_MEMMAP *shouldn't* work on our
systems. This commit adds a check into uv_bios_call(), to see if we have
the EFI_OLD_MEMMAP bit set in efi.flags. If it is set, we fall back to
using our old callback method, which uses efi_call() directly on the __va()
of our function pointer.

Andrew Banman 4f059d514f x86/platform/uv/BAU: Add UV4-specific functions
Add the UV4-specific function definitions and define an operations struct
to implement them in the BAU driver.

Many BAU MMRs, although functionally the same, have new addresses on UV4
due to hardware changes. Each MMR requires new read/write functions, but
their implementation in the driver does not change. Thus, it is enough to
enumerate them in the operations struct for the changes to take effect.

The BAU on UV4 does not need to maintain the payload queue tail pointer. Do

Note that write_payload_tail is not an abstracted BAU function since it is
an operation specific to pre-UV4 versions. Then we must switch on the UV

is_uv*_hub because it is quicker/more concise.

Andrew Banman 5e4f96fe2a x86/platform/uv/BAU: Add generic function pointers
Many BAU functions have different implementations depending on the UV
version. Rather than switching on the uvhub_version throughout the driver,
we can define a set of operations for each version. This is especially
beneficial for UV4, which will require many new MMR read/write functions.

Currently, the set of abstracted functions are the same for UV1, UV2, and
UV3. The functions were chosen because each one will have a different
implementation for UV4. Other functions will be added as needed to handle
new implementations or to cleanup the existing differences between UV1,
UV2, and UV3, i.e. read_status and wait_completion.

Matt Fleming 92dc33501b x86/efi: Round EFI memmap reservations to EFI_PAGE_SIZE
Mike Galbraith reported that his machine started rebooting during boot
after,

  commit 8e80632fb2 ("efi/esrt: Use efi_mem_reserve() and avoid a kmalloc()")

The ESRT table on his machine is 56 bytes and at no point in the
efi_arch_mem_reserve() call path is that size rounded up to
EFI_PAGE_SIZE, nor is the start address on an EFI_PAGE_SIZE boundary.

Since the EFI memory map only deals with whole pages, inserting an EFI
memory region with 56 bytes results in a new entry covering zero
pages, and completely screws up the calculations for the old regions
that were trimmed.

Round all sizes upwards, and start addresses downwards, to the nearest
EFI_PAGE_SIZE boundary.

Additionally, efi_memmap_insert() expects the mem::range::end value to
be one less than the end address for the region.

This situation can be avoided if we call efi_esrt_init after memblock has
memory regions for the allocation.

Also, the EFI ESRT driver makes use of early_memremap'pings. Therfore, we
do not want to defer efi_esrt_init for too long. We must call such function
while calls to early_memremap are still valid.

A good place to meet the two aforementioned conditions is right after
memblock_x86_fill, grouped with other EFI-related functions.

This is a simple change to add in the physical mappings as well as the

Matt Fleming 816e76129e efi: Allow drivers to reserve boot services forever
Today, it is not possible for drivers to reserve EFI boot services for
access after efi_free_boot_services() has been called on x86. For
ARM/arm64 it can be done simply by calling memblock_reserve().

Having this ability for all three architectures is desirable for a
couple of reasons,

  1) It saves drivers copying data out of those regions
  2) kexec reboot can now make use of things like ESRT

Instead of using the standard memblock_reserve() which is insufficient
to reserve the region on x86 (see efi_reserve_boot_services()), a new
API is introduced in this patch; efi_mem_reserve().

efi.memmap now always represents which EFI memory regions are
available. On x86 the EFI boot services regions that have not been
reserved via efi_mem_reserve() will be removed from efi.memmap during
efi_free_boot_services().

This has implications for kexec, since it is not possible for a newly
kexec'd kernel to access the same boot services regions that the
initial boot kernel had access to unless they are reserved by every
kexec kernel in the chain.

Matt Fleming dca0f971ea efi: Add efi_memmap_init_late() for permanent EFI memmap
Drivers need a way to access the EFI memory map at runtime. ARM and
arm64 currently provide this by remapping the EFI memory map into the
vmalloc space before setting up the EFI virtual mappings.

x86 does not provide this functionality which has resulted in the code
in efi_mem_desc_lookup() where it will manually map individual EFI
memmap entries if the memmap has already been torn down on x86,

  /*
   * If a driver calls this after efi_free_boot_services,
   * ->map will be NULL, and the target may also not be mapped.
   * So just always get our own virtual map on the CPU.
   *
   */
  md = early_memremap(p, sizeof (*md));

There isn't a good reason for not providing a permanent EFI memory map
for runtime queries, especially since the EFI regions are not mapped
into the standard kernel page tables.

Matt Fleming 9479c7cebf efi: Refactor efi_memmap_init_early() into arch-neutral code
Every EFI architecture apart from ia64 needs to setup the EFI memory
map at efi.memmap, and the code for doing that is essentially the same
across all implementations. Therefore, it makes sense to factor this
out into the common code under drivers/firmware/efi/.

The only slight variation is the data structure out of which we pull
the initial memory map information, such as physical address, memory
descriptor size and version, etc. We can address this by passing a
generic data structure (struct efi_memory_map_data) as the argument to
efi_memmap_init_early() which contains the minimum info required for
initialising the memory map.

In the process, this patch also fixes a few undesirable implementation
differences:

 - ARM and arm64 were failing to clear the EFI_MEMMAP bit when
unmapping the early EFI memory map. EFI_MEMMAP indicates whether
the EFI memory map is mapped (not the regions contained within) and
can be traversed. It's more correct to set the bit as soon as we
memremap() the passed in EFI memmap.

 - Rename efi_unmmap_memmap() to efi_memmap_unmap() to adhere to the
   regular naming scheme.

This patch also uses a read-write mapping for the memory map instead
of the read-only mapping currently used on ARM and arm64. x86 needs
the ability to update the memory map in-place when assigning virtual
addresses to regions (efi_map_region()) and tagging regions when
reserving boot services (efi_reserve_boot_services()).

There's no way for the generic fake_mem code to know which mapping to
use without introducing some arch-specific constant/hook, so just use
read-write since read-only is of dubious value for the EFI memory map.

Matt Fleming ab72a27da4 x86/efi: Consolidate region mapping logic
EFI regions are currently mapped in two separate places. The bulk of
the work is done in efi_map_regions() but when CONFIG_EFI_MIXED is
enabled the additional regions that are required when operating in
mixed mode are mapping in efi_setup_page_tables().

Pull everything into efi_map_regions() and refactor the test for
which regions should be mapped into a should_map_region() function.
Generously sprinkle comments to clarify the different cases.

Alex Thorlton f72075c9ed x86/platform/uv: Skip UV runtime services mapping in the efi_runtime_disabled case
This problem has actually been in the UV code for a while, but we didn't
catch it until recently, because we had been relying on EFI_OLD_MEMMAP
to allow our systems to boot for a period of time. We noticed the issue
when trying to kexec a recent community kernel, where we hit this NULL
pointer dereference in efi_sync_low_kernel_mappings():

[ 0.337515] BUG: unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at 0000000000000880
 [ 0.346276] IP: [<ffffffff8105df8d>] efi_sync_low_kernel_mappings+0x5d/0x1b0

The problem doesn't show up with EFI_OLD_MEMMAP because we skip the
chunk of setup_efi_state() that sets the efi_loader_signature for the
kexec'd kernel. When the kexec'd kernel boots, it won't set EFI_BOOT in
setup_arch, so we completely avoid the bug.

We always kexec with noefi on the command line, so this shouldn't be an
issue, but since we're not actually checking for efi_runtime_disabled in
uv_bios_init(), we end up trying to do EFI runtime callbacks when we
shouldn't be. This patch just adds a check for efi_runtime_disabled in
uv_bios_init() so that we don't map in uv_systab when runtime_disabled ==
true.

My EBDA is at 0x2c000, which blocks off everything from 0x2c000 and
up, and my trampoline is 0x6000 bytes (6 pages), so it doesn't fit

Without this patch, it panics due to a failure to allocate the
trampoline. With this patch, it works:

Fabian Frederick bd721ea73e treewide: replace obsolete _refok by __ref
There was only one use of __initdata_refok and __exit_refok

__init_refok was used 46 times against 82 for __ref.

Those definitions are obsolete since commit 312b1485fb ("Introduce new
section reference annotations tags: __ref, __refdata, __refconst")

This patch removes the following compatibility definitions and replaces
them treewide.

/* compatibility defines */
#define __init_refok     __ref
#define __initdata_refok __refdata
#define __exit_refok     __ref

I can also provide separate patches if necessary.

Paul Gortmaker 00677f826b x86/platform: Delete extraneous MODULE_* tags fromm ts5500
This file doesn't do anything modular and hence while the tristate
Kconfig used for the gpio portion is fine, it recently got swept up in
an audit of files using the module.h header but not using any modular
registration functions.

However it is not compiled in any of the normal build coverage, and
so some remaining extraneous MODULE macro use were not found until a
randconfig from the kbuild robot came across it.

Here we remove the remaining no-op MODULE macros from the built in
portion of code relating to this Kconfig option.

Andy Lutomirski d92fc69cca x86/mm: Remove kernel_unmap_pages_in_pgd() and efi_cleanup_page_tables()
kernel_unmap_pages_in_pgd() is dangerous: if a PGD entry in
init_mm.pgd were to be cleared, callers would need to ensure that
the pgd entry hadn't been propagated to any other pgd.

Its only caller was efi_cleanup_page_tables(), and that, in turn,
was unused, so just delete both functions. This leaves a couple of
other helpers unused, so delete them, too.

Paul Gortmaker cc3ae7b0af x86/platform: Audit and remove any unnecessary uses of module.h
Historically a lot of these existed because we did not have
a distinction between what was modular code and what was providing
support to modules via EXPORT_SYMBOL and friends. That changed
when we forked out support for the latter into the export.h file.

This means we should be able to reduce the usage of module.h
in code that is obj-y Makefile or bool Kconfig. The advantage
in doing so is that module.h itself sources about 15 other headers;
adding significantly to what we feed cpp, and it can obscure what
headers we are effectively using.

Since module.h was the source for init.h (for __init) and for
export.h (for EXPORT_SYMBOL) we consider each obj-y/bool instance
for the presence of either and replace as needed.

One module.h was converted to moduleparam.h since the file had
multiple module_param() in it, and another file had an instance of
MODULE_DEVICE_TABLE deleted, since that is a no-op when builtin.

Finally, the 32 bit build coverage of olpc_ofw revealed a couple
implicit includes, which were pretty self evident to fix based on
what gcc was complaining about.

Alex Thorlton d1be84a232 x86/uv: Update uv_bios_call() to use efi_call_virt_pointer()
Now that the efi_call_virt() macro has been generalized to be able to
use EFI system tables besides efi.systab, we are able to convert our
uv_bios_call() wrapper to use this standard EFI callback mechanism.

This simple change is part of a much larger effort to recover from some
issues with the way we were mapping in some of our MMRs, and the way
that we were doing our BIOS callbacks, which were uncovered by commit
67a9108ed4 ("x86/efi: Build our own page table structures").

The first issue that this uncovered was that we were relying on the EFI
memory mapping mechanism to map in our MMR space for us, which, while
reliable, was technically a bug, as it relied on "undefined" behavior in
the mapping code.

The reason we were able to piggyback on the EFI memory mapping code to
map in our MMRs was because, previously, EFI code used the
trampoline_pgd, which shares a few entries with the main kernel pgd. It
just so happened, that the memory range containing our MMRs was inside
one of those shared regions, which kept our code working without issue
for quite a while.

Anyways, once we discovered this problem, we brought back our original
code to map in the MMRs with commit:

08914f436b ("x86/platform/UV: Bring back the call to map_low_mmrs in uv_system_init")

This got our systems a little further along, but we were still running
into trouble with our EFI callbacks, which prevented us from booting
all the way up.

Our first step towards fixing the BIOS callbacks was to get our
uv_bios_call() wrapper updated to use efi_call_virt() instead of the plain
efi_call(). The previous patch took care of the effort needed to make
that possible. Along the way, we hit a major issue with some confusion
about how to properly pull arguments higher than number 6 off the stack
in the efi_call() code, which resulted in the following commit from Linus:

  683ad8092c ("x86/efi: Fix 7-parameter efi_call()s")

Now that all of those issues are out of the way, we're able to make this
simple change to use the new efi_call_virt_pointer() in uv_bios_call()
which gets our machines booting, running properly, and able to execute our
callbacks with 6+ arguments.

Note that, since we are now using the EFI page table when we make our
function call, we are no longer able to make the call using the __va()
of our function pointer, since the memory range containing that address
isn't mapped into the EFI page table. For now, we will use the physical
address of the function directly, since that is mapped into the EFI page
table. In the near future, we're going to get some code added in to
properly update our function pointer to its virtual address during
SetVirtualAddressMap.

Arnd Bergmann 5ab788d738 rtc: cmos: move mc146818rtc code out of asm-generic/rtc.h
Drivers should not really include stuff from asm-generic directly,
and the PC-style cmos rtc driver does this in order to reuse the
mc146818 implementation of get_rtc_time/set_rtc_time rather than
the architecture specific one for the architecture it gets built for.

To make it more obvious what is going on, this moves and renames the
two functions into include/linux/mc146818rtc.h, which holds the
other mc146818 specific code. Ideally it would be in a .c file,
but that would require extra infrastructure as the functions are
called by multiple drivers with conflicting dependencies.

With this change, the asm-generic/rtc.h header also becomes much
more generic, so it can be reused more easily across any architecture
that still relies on the genrtc driver.

The only caller of the internal __get_rtc_time/__set_rtc_time
functions is in arch/alpha/kernel/rtc.c, and we just change those
over to the new naming.

Linus Torvalds 683ad8092c x86/efi: Fix 7-parameter efi_call()s
Alex Thorlton reported that the SGI/UV code crashes in the efi_call()
code when invoked with 7 parameters, due to:

        mov (%rsp), %rax
        mov 8(%rax), %rax
        ...
        mov %rax, 40(%rsp)

Offset 8 is only true if CONFIG_FRAME_POINTERS is disabled,
with frame pointers enabled it should be 16.

Furthermore, the SAVE_XMM code saves the old stack pointer, but
that's just crazy. It saves the stack pointer *AFTER* we've done
the:

        FRAME_BEGIN

... which will have *changed* the stack pointer, depending on whether
stack frames are enabled or not.

So when the code then does:

        mov (%rsp), %rax

... we now move that old stack pointer into %rax, but the offset off that
stack pointer will depend on whether that FRAME_BEGIN saved off %rbp
or not.

So that whole 8-vs-16 offset confusion depends on the frame pointer!
If frame pointers were enabled, it will be 16. If they weren't, it
will be 8.

The right fix is to just get rid of that silly conditional frame
pointer thing, and always use frame pointers in this stub function.
And then we don't need that (odd) load to get the old stack
pointer into %rax - we can just use the frame pointer.

Mike Travis ef93bf8039 x86/platform/UV: Add obtaining GAM Range Table from UV BIOS
UV4 uses a GAM (globally addressed memory) architecture that supports
variable sized memory per node. This replaces the old "M" value (number
of address bits per node) with a range table for conversions between
addresses and physical node (pnode) id's. This table is obtained from UV
BIOS via the EFI UVsystab table. Support for older EFI UVsystab tables
is maintained.

Josh Boyer 7f9b474c92 x86/efi-bgrt: Switch all pr_err() to pr_notice() for invalid BGRT
The promise of pretty boot splashes from firmware via BGRT was at
best only that; a promise. The kernel diligently checks to make
sure the BGRT data firmware gives it is valid, and dutifully warns
the user when it isn't. However, it does so via the pr_err log
level which seems unnecessary. The user cannot do anything about
this and there really isn't an error on the part of Linux to
correct.

This lowers the log level by using pr_notice instead. Users will
no longer have their boot process uglified by the kernel reminding
us that firmware can and often is broken when the 'quiet' kernel
parameter is specified. Ironic, considering BGRT is supposed to
make boot pretty to begin with.

Matt Fleming 884f4f66ff efi: Remove global 'memmap' EFI memory map
Abolish the poorly named EFI memory map, 'memmap'. It is shadowed by a
bunch of local definitions in various files and having two ways to
access the EFI memory map ('efi.memmap' vs. 'memmap') is rather
confusing.

Furthermore, IA64 doesn't even provide this global object, which has
caused issues when trying to write generic EFI memmap code.

Replace all occurrences with efi.memmap, and convert the remaining
iterator code to use for_each_efi_mem_desc().

Matt Fleming 78ce248faa efi: Iterate over efi.memmap in for_each_efi_memory_desc()
Most of the users of for_each_efi_memory_desc() are equally happy
iterating over the EFI memory map in efi.memmap instead of 'memmap',
since the former is usually a pointer to the latter.

For those users that want to specify an EFI memory map other than
efi.memmap, that can be done using for_each_efi_memory_desc_in_map().
One such example is in the libstub code where the firmware is queried
directly for the memory map, it gets iterated over, and then freed.

This change goes part of the way toward deleting the global 'memmap'
variable, which is not universally available on all architectures
(notably IA64) and is rather poorly named.

The EFI_SYSTEM_TABLES status bit is set by all EFI supporting architectures
upon discovery of the EFI system table, but the bit is never tested in any
code we have in the tree. So remove it.

Chen Yu 1373718194 ACPI / PM: Introduce efi poweroff for HW-full platforms without _S5
The problem is Linux registers pm_power_off = efi_power_off only if
we are in hardware reduced mode. Actually, what we also want is to do
this when ACPI S5 is simply not supported on non-legacy platforms.
Since some future Intel platforms are HW-full mode where the DSDT
fails to supply an _S5 object(without SLP_TYP), we should let such
kind of platform to leverage efi runtime service to poweroff.

This patch uses efi power off as first choice when S5 is unavailable,
even if there is a customized poweroff(driver provided, eg).
Meanwhile, the legacy platforms will not be affected because there is
no path for them to overwrite the pm_power_off to efi power off.

Alex Thorlton 1c532e00a0 x86/platform/uv: Disable UV BAU by default
For several years, the common practice has been to boot UVs with the
"nobau" parameter on the command line, to disable the BAU. We've
decided that it makes more sense to just disable the BAU by default in
the kernel, and provide the option to turn it on, if desired.

For now, having the on/off switch doesn't buy us any more than just
reversing the logic would, but we're working towards having the BAU
enabled by default on UV4. When those changes are in place, having the
on/off switch will make more sense than an enable flag, since the
default behavior will be different depending on the system version.

I've also added a bit of documentation for the new parameter to
Documentation/kernel-parameters.txt.

Linus Torvalds 26660a4046 Merge branch 'core-objtool-for-linus' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/tip/tip
Pull 'objtool' stack frame validation from Ingo Molnar:
"This tree adds a new kernel build-time object file validation feature
(ONFIG_STACK_VALIDATION=y): kernel stack frame correctness validation.
It was written by and is maintained by Josh Poimboeuf.

The motivation: there's a category of hard to find kernel bugs, most
of them in assembly code (but also occasionally in C code), that
degrades the quality of kernel stack dumps/backtraces. These bugs are
hard to detect at the source code level. Such bugs result in
incorrect/incomplete backtraces most of time - but can also in some
rare cases result in crashes or other undefined behavior.

The build time correctness checking is done via the new 'objtool'
user-space utility that was written for this purpose and which is
hosted in the kernel repository in tools/objtool/. The tool's (very
simple) UI and source code design is shaped after Git and perf and
shares quite a bit of infrastructure with tools/perf (which tooling
infrastructure sharing effort got merged via perf and is already
upstream). Objtool follows the well-known kernel coding style.

Objtool does not try to check .c or .S files, it instead analyzes the
resulting .o generated machine code from first principles: it decodes
the instruction stream and interprets it. (Right now objtool supports
  the x86-64 architecture.)

  From tools/objtool/Documentation/stack-validation.txt:

"The kernel CONFIG_STACK_VALIDATION option enables a host tool named
objtool which runs at compile time. It has a "check" subcommand
which analyzes every .o file and ensures the validity of its stack
metadata. It enforces a set of rules on asm code and C inline
assembly code so that stack traces can be reliable.

Currently it only checks frame pointer usage, but there are plans to
add CFI validation for C files and CFI generation for asm files.

For each function, it recursively follows all possible code paths
and validates the correct frame pointer state at each instruction.

It also follows code paths involving special sections, like
.altinstructions, __jump_table, and __ex_table, which can add
alternative execution paths to a given instruction (or set of
instructions). Similarly, it knows how to follow switch statements,
for which gcc sometimes uses jump tables."

When this new kernel option is enabled (it's disabled by default), the
tool, if it finds any suspicious assembly code pattern, outputs
  warnings in compiler warning format:

warning: objtool: rtlwifi_rate_mapping()+0x2e7: frame pointer state mismatch
warning: objtool: cik_tiling_mode_table_init()+0x6ce: call without frame pointer save/setup
warning: objtool:__schedule()+0x3c0: duplicate frame pointer save
warning: objtool:__schedule()+0x3fd: sibling call from callable instruction with changed frame pointer

... so that scripts that pick up compiler warnings will notice them.
All known warnings triggered by the tool are fixed by the tree, most
of the commits in fact prepare the kernel to be warning-free. Most of
them are bugfixes or cleanups that stand on their own, but there are
also some annotations of 'special' stack frames for justified cases
such entries to JIT-ed code (BPF) or really special boot time code.

There are two other long-term motivations behind this tool as well:

   - To improve the quality and reliability of kernel stack frames, so
that they can be used for optimized live patching.

   - To create independent infrastructure to check the correctness of
CFI stack frames at build time. CFI debuginfo is notoriously
unreliable and we cannot use it in the kernel as-is without extra
checking done both on the kernel side and on the build side.

The quality of kernel stack frames matters to debuggability as well,
so IMO we can merge this without having to consider the live patching
  or CFI debuginfo angle"

Matt Fleming 452308de61 x86/efi: Fix boot crash by always mapping boot service regions into new EFI page tables
Some machines have EFI regions in page zero (physical address
0x00000000) and historically that region has been added to the e820
map via trim_bios_range(), and ultimately mapped into the kernel page
tables. It was not mapped via efi_map_regions() as one would expect.

Alexis reports that with the new separate EFI page tables some boot
services regions, such as page zero, are not mapped. This triggers an
oops during the SetVirtualAddressMap() runtime call.

For the EFI boot services quirk on x86 we need to memblock_reserve()
boot services regions until after SetVirtualAddressMap(). Doing that
while respecting the ownership of regions that may have already been
reserved by the kernel was the motivation behind this commit:

7d68dc3f10 ("x86, efi: Do not reserve boot services regions within reserved areas")

That patch was merged at a time when the EFI runtime virtual mappings
were inserted into the kernel page tables as described above, and the
trick of setting ->numpages (and hence the region size) to zero to
track regions that should not be freed in efi_free_boot_services()
meant that we never mapped those regions in efi_map_regions(). Instead
we were relying solely on the existing kernel mappings.

Now that we have separate page tables we need to make sure the EFI
boot services regions are mapped correctly, even if someone else has
already called memblock_reserve(). Instead of stashing a tag in
->numpages, set the EFI_MEMORY_RUNTIME bit of ->attribute. Since it
generally makes no sense to mark a boot services region as required at
runtime, it's pretty much guaranteed the firmware will not have
already set this bit.

For the record, the specific circumstances under which Alexis
triggered this bug was that an EFI runtime driver on his machine was
responding to the EVT_SIGNAL_VIRTUAL_ADDRESS_CHANGE event during
SetVirtualAddressMap().

The event handler for this driver looks like this,

  sub rsp,0x28
  lea rdx,[rip+0x2445] # 0xaa948720
  mov ecx,0x4
  call func_aa9447c0 ; call to ConvertPointer(4, & 0xaa948720)
  mov r11,QWORD PTR [rip+0x2434] # 0xaa948720
  xor eax,eax
  mov BYTE PTR [r11+0x1],0x1
  add rsp,0x28
  ret

Which is pretty typical code for an EVT_SIGNAL_VIRTUAL_ADDRESS_CHANGE
handler. The "mov r11, QWORD PTR [rip+0x2424]" was the faulting
instruction because ConvertPointer() was being called to convert the
address 0x0000000000000000, which when converted is left unchanged and
remains 0x0000000000000000.

The output of the oops trace gave the impression of a standard NULL
pointer dereference bug, but because we're accessing physical
addresses during ConvertPointer(), it wasn't. EFI boot services code
is stored at that address on Alexis' machine.

Josh Poimboeuf c0dd671686 objtool: Mark non-standard object files and directories
Code which runs outside the kernel's normal mode of operation often does
unusual things which can cause a static analysis tool like objtool to
emit false positive warnings:

 - boot image
 - vdso image
 - relocation
 - realmode
 - efi
 - head
 - purgatory
 - modpost

Set OBJECT_FILES_NON_STANDARD for their related files and directories,
which will tell objtool to skip checking them. It's ok to skip them
because they don't affect runtime stack traces.

Also skip the following code which does the right thing with respect to
frame pointers, but is too "special" to be validated by a tool:

 - entry
 - mcount

Also skip the test_nx module because it modifies its exception handling
table at runtime, which objtool can't understand. Fortunately it's
just a test module so it doesn't matter much.

Currently objtool is the only user of OBJECT_FILES_NON_STANDARD, but it
might eventually be useful for other tools.

Bryan O'Donoghue c637fa5294 x86/platform/intel/quark: Drop IMR lock bit support
Isolated Memory Regions support a lock bit. The lock bit in an IMR prevents
modification of the IMR until the core goes through a warm or cold reset.
The lock bit feature is not useful in the context of the kernel API and is
not really necessary since modification of IMRs is possible only from
ring-zero anyway. This patch drops support for IMR locks bits, it
simplifies the kernel API and removes an unnecessary and needlessly complex
