Expose an 'override_only' helper macro (i.e.
PCI_DRIVER_OVERRIDE_DEVICE_VFIO) for VFIO PCI sub system and add the
required code to prefix its matching entries with "vfio_" in
modules.alias file.
It allows VFIO device drivers to include match entries in the
modules.alias file produced by kbuild that are not used for normal
driver autoprobing and module autoloading. Drivers using these match
entries can be connected to the PCI device manually, by userspace, using
the existing driver_override sysfs.
For example the resulting modules.alias may have:
alias pci:v000015B3d00001021sv*sd*bc*sc*i* mlx5_core
alias vfio_pci:v000015B3d00001021sv*sd*bc*sc*i* mlx5_vfio_pci
alias vfio_pci:v*d*sv*sd*bc*sc*i* vfio_pci
In this example mlx5_core and mlx5_vfio_pci match to the same PCI
device. The kernel will autoload and autobind to mlx5_core but the
kernel and udev mechanisms will ignore mlx5_vfio_pci.
When userspace wants to change a device to the VFIO subsystem it can
implement a generic algorithm:
1) Identify the sysfs path to the device:
/sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:01.0/0000:01:00.0
2) Get the modalias string from the kernel:
$ cat /sys/bus/pci/devices/0000:01:00.0/modalias
pci:v000015B3d00001021sv000015B3sd00000001bc02sc00i00
3) Prefix it with vfio_:
vfio_pci:v000015B3d00001021sv000015B3sd00000001bc02sc00i00
4) Search modules.alias for the above string and select the entry that
has the fewest *'s:
alias vfio_pci:v000015B3d00001021sv*sd*bc*sc*i* mlx5_vfio_pci
5) modprobe the matched module name:
$ modprobe mlx5_vfio_pci
6) cat the matched module name to driver_override:
echo mlx5_vfio_pci > /sys/bus/pci/devices/0000:01:00.0/driver_override
7) unbind device from original module
echo 0000:01:00.0 > /sys/bus/pci/devices/0000:01:00.0/driver/unbind
8) probe PCI drivers (or explicitly bind to mlx5_vfio_pci)
echo 0000:01:00.0 > /sys/bus/pci/drivers_probe
The algorithm is independent of bus type. In future the other buses with
VFIO device drivers, like platform and ACPI, can use this algorithm as
well.
This patch is the infrastructure to provide the information in the
modules.alias to userspace. Convert the only VFIO pci_driver which results
in one new line in the modules.alias:
alias vfio_pci:v*d*sv*sd*bc*sc*i* vfio_pci
Later series introduce additional HW specific VFIO PCI drivers, such as
mlx5_vfio_pci.

benefits from the previous patch), the second is on PPC64.

In the first exemple, we see GCC doesn't need to duplicate what

In the second exemple, we see that GCC doesn't need to emit a test

to be added in the OTHER_TEXT_SECTIONS in modpost.c

Since commit 2c12c8103d ("scripts/kernel-doc: optionally treat
warnings as errors"), the kernel-doc script will treat warnings as
errors when one of the following conditions is true:
- The KDOC_WERROR environment variable is non-zero
- The KCFLAGS environment variable contains -Werror
- The -Werror parameter is passed to kernel-doc
Checking KCFLAGS for -Werror allows piggy-backing on the C compiler
error handling. However, unlike the C compiler, kernel-doc has no
provision for -Wno-error. This makes compiling the kernel with -Werror
(to catch regressions) and W=1 (to enable more checks) always fail,
without the same possibility as offered by the C compiler to treating
some selected warnings as warnings despite the global -Werror setting.
To fix this, evaluate KDOC_WERROR after KCFLAGS, which allows disabling
the warnings-as-errors behaviour of kernel-doc selectively by setting
KDOC_WERROR=0.

LLVM_IAS=1 controls enabling clang's integrated assembler via
-integrated-as. This was an explicit opt in until we could enable
assembler support in Clang for more architecures. Now we have support
and CI coverage of LLVM_IAS=1 for all architecures except a few more
bugs affecting s390 and powerpc.
This commit flips the default from opt in via LLVM_IAS=1 to opt out via
LLVM_IAS=0. CI systems or developers that were previously doing builds
with CC=clang or LLVM=1 without explicitly setting LLVM_IAS must now
explicitly opt out via LLVM_IAS=0, otherwise they will be implicitly
opted-in.
This finally shortens the command line invocation when cross compiling
with LLVM to simply:
$ make ARCH=arm64 LLVM=1

We get constant feedback that the command line invocation of make is too
long when compiling with LLVM. CROSS_COMPILE is helpful when a toolchain
has a prefix of the target triple, or is an absolute path outside of
$PATH.
Since a Clang binary is generally multi-targeted, we can infer a given
target from SRCARCH/ARCH. If CROSS_COMPILE is not set, simply set
--target= for CLANG_FLAGS, KBUILD_CFLAGS, and KBUILD_AFLAGS based on
$SRCARCH.
Previously, we'd cross compile via:
$ ARCH=arm64 CROSS_COMPILE=aarch64-linux-gnu- make LLVM=1 LLVM_IAS=1
Now:
$ ARCH=arm64 make LLVM=1 LLVM_IAS=1
For native builds (not involving cross compilation) we now explicitly
specify a target triple rather than rely on the implicit host triple.

Especially, scripts/checkdeclares.pl is not hooked by anyone.
It should be executable since it is tedious to type

The original patch [1] set the x bit properly, but it was lost when
it was merged as commit 21917bded7 ("scripts: a new script for

When merging configuration fragments, it might be of interest to
identify mismatches (redefinitions) programmatically. Hence add the
option -s (strict mode) to instruct merge_config.sh to bail out in
case any redefinition has been detected.
With strict mode, warnings are emitted as before, but the script
terminates with rc=1. If -y is set to define "builtin having
precedence over modules", fragments are still allowed to set =m (while
the base config has =y). Strict mode will tolerate that as demotions
from =y to =m are ignored when setting -y.

if (irq == d->irq)
break;
}
if (list_entry_is_head(d, &ddata->irq_list, node))

[This specific example comes from drivers/power/supply/cpcap-battery.c]
Most list macros use list_entry_is_head() as loop exit condition meaning it
is not unsafe to reuse pos (a.k.a. d) in the code above.
Let's avoid reporting these cases.

When building ARCH=riscv allmodconfig with llvm-objcopy, the objcopy
version warning from this script appears:
WARNING: could not find objcopy version or version is less than 2.17.
Local function references are disabled.
The check_objcopy() function in scripts/recordmcount.pl is set up to
parse GNU objcopy's version string, not llvm-objcopy's, which triggers
the warning.
Commit 799c434154 ("kbuild: thin archives make default for all archs")
made binutils 2.20 mandatory and commit ba64beb174 ("kbuild: check the
minimum assembler version in Kconfig") enforces this at configuration
time so just remove check_objcopy() and $can_use_local instead, assuming
--globalize-symbol is always available.
llvm-objcopy has supported --globalize-symbol since LLVM 7.0.0 in 2018
and the minimum version for building the kernel with LLVM is 10.0.1 so
there is no issue introduced:

The constructor code for modules must be aware of init code inside
different sections.
Newer GCC compilers write constructors in more than one section,
e.g. ".ctors.65435". These must be combined into a single
".ctors" section. In the module loader, only the ".ctors" section
is searched and the constructors therein are initialized, when
CONFIG_CONSTRUCTORS=y is set. Other constructors are ignored.
This change combines all ".ctors.*" and the ".ctors" section, if any,
in <module>.ko into a single ."ctors" section.
For code coverage in GCC, this is necessary to show the
code coverage for modules, since code coverage uses such
constructors when initializing a module in newer version of GCC.

When building modules(CONFIG_...=m), I found some of module versions
are incorrect and set to 0.
This can be found in build log for first clean build which shows
WARNING: EXPORT symbol "XXXX" [drivers/XXX/XXX.ko] version generation failed,

But in second build(incremental build), the WARNING disappeared and the
module version becomes valid CRC and make someone who want to change
modules without updating kernel image can't insert their modules.
The problematic code is
+ $(foreach n, $(filter-out FORCE,$^), \
+ $(if $(wildcard $(n).symversions), \
+ ; cat $(n).symversions >> $@.symversions))
For example:
rm -f fs/notify/built-in.a.symversions ; rm -f fs/notify/built-in.a; \
llvm-ar cDPrST fs/notify/built-in.a fs/notify/fsnotify.o \
fs/notify/notification.o fs/notify/group.o ...
`foreach n` shows nothing to `cat` into $(n).symversions because
`if $(wildcard $(n).symversions)` return nothing, but actually
they do exist during this line was executed.
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 168580 Jun 13 19:10 fs/notify/fsnotify.o
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 111 Jun 13 19:10 fs/notify/fsnotify.o.symversions
The reason is the $(n).symversions are generated at runtime, but
Makefile wildcard function expends and checks the file exist or not
during parsing the Makefile.
Thus fix this by use `test` shell command to check the file
existence in runtime.

The commit 042da426f8 ("scripts/setlocalversion: simplify the short
version part") reduces indentation. Unfortunately, it also changes behavior
in a subtle way - if the user has empty "LOCALVERSION" variable, the plus
sign is appended to the kernel version. It wasn't appended before.
This patch reverts to the old behavior - we append the plus sign only if
the LOCALVERSION variable is not set.

build arch_atomic_long_*() atop these, which can be safely used in

Introduce 'struct bpf_timer { __u64 :64; __u64 :64; };' that can be embedded
in hash/array/lru maps as a regular field and helpers to operate on it:
// Initialize the timer.
// First 4 bits of 'flags' specify clockid.
// Only CLOCK_MONOTONIC, CLOCK_REALTIME, CLOCK_BOOTTIME are allowed.
long bpf_timer_init(struct bpf_timer *timer, struct bpf_map *map, int flags);
// Configure the timer to call 'callback_fn' static function.
long bpf_timer_set_callback(struct bpf_timer *timer, void *callback_fn);
// Arm the timer to expire 'nsec' nanoseconds from the current time.
long bpf_timer_start(struct bpf_timer *timer, u64 nsec, u64 flags);
// Cancel the timer and wait for callback_fn to finish if it was running.
long bpf_timer_cancel(struct bpf_timer *timer);
Here is how BPF program might look like:
struct map_elem {
int counter;
struct bpf_timer timer;
};
struct {
__uint(type, BPF_MAP_TYPE_HASH);
__uint(max_entries, 1000);
__type(key, int);
__type(value, struct map_elem);
} hmap SEC(".maps");
static int timer_cb(void *map, int *key, struct map_elem *val);
/* val points to particular map element that contains bpf_timer. */
SEC("fentry/bpf_fentry_test1")
int BPF_PROG(test1, int a)
{
struct map_elem *val;
int key = 0;
val = bpf_map_lookup_elem(&hmap, &key);
if (val) {
bpf_timer_init(&val->timer, &hmap, CLOCK_REALTIME);
bpf_timer_set_callback(&val->timer, timer_cb);
bpf_timer_start(&val->timer, 1000 /* call timer_cb2 in 1 usec */, 0);
}
}
This patch adds helper implementations that rely on hrtimers
to call bpf functions as timers expire.
The following patches add necessary safety checks.
Only programs with CAP_BPF are allowed to use bpf_timer.
The amount of timers used by the program is constrained by
the memcg recorded at map creation time.
The bpf_timer_init() helper needs explicit 'map' argument because inner maps
are dynamic and not known at load time. While the bpf_timer_set_callback() is
receiving hidden 'aux->prog' argument supplied by the verifier.
The prog pointer is needed to do refcnting of bpf program to make sure that
program doesn't get freed while the timer is armed. This approach relies on
"user refcnt" scheme used in prog_array that stores bpf programs for
bpf_tail_call. The bpf_timer_set_callback() will increment the prog refcnt which is
paired with bpf_timer_cancel() that will drop the prog refcnt. The
ops->map_release_uref is responsible for cancelling the timers and dropping
prog refcnt when user space reference to a map reaches zero.
This uref approach is done to make sure that Ctrl-C of user space process will
not leave timers running forever unless the user space explicitly pinned a map
that contained timers in bpffs.
bpf_timer_init() and bpf_timer_set_callback() will return -EPERM if map doesn't
have user references (is not held by open file descriptor from user space and
not pinned in bpffs).
The bpf_map_delete_elem() and bpf_map_update_elem() operations cancel
and free the timer if given map element had it allocated.
"bpftool map update" command can be used to cancel timers.
The 'struct bpf_timer' is explicitly __attribute__((aligned(8))) because
'__u64 :64' has 1 byte alignment of 8 byte padding.

Add "auto" to the usage message so that it's a little clearer that you can
pass "auto" as the second argument. When passing "auto" the script tries
to find the base path automatically instead of requiring it be passed on
the commandline. Also use [<variable>] to indicate the variable argument
and that it is optional so that we can differentiate from the literal
"auto" that should be passed.

printed to stderr. We don't really care about these warnings, so let's
just silence these messages to cleanup output of this script.

Now that stacktraces contain the build ID information we can update this
script to use debuginfod-find to locate the debuginfo for the vmlinux and
modules automatically. This can replace the existing code that requires
specifying a path to vmlinux or tries to find the vmlinux and modules
automatically by using the release number. Work it into the script as a
fallback option if the vmlinux isn't specified on the commandline.

checkpatch complains about positive return values of poll functions.
Example:
WARNING: return of an errno should typically be negative (ie: return -EPOLLIN)
+ return EPOLLIN;
Poll functions return positive values. The defines for the return values
of poll functions all start with EPOLL, resulting in a number of false
positives. An often used workaround is to assign poll function return
values to variables and returning that variable, but that is a less than
perfect solution.
There is no error definition which starts with EPOLL, so it is safe to
omit the warning for return values starting with EPOLL.

Bitfield definitions can appear to be labels so ignore any

Commit "mm/page_alloc: convert per-cpu list protection to local_lock" will
introduce a zero-sized per-CPU variable, which causes pahole to generate
invalid BTF. Only pahole versions 1.18 through 1.21 are impacted, as
before 1.18 pahole doesn't know anything about per-CPU variables, and 1.22
contains the proper fix for the issue.
Luckily, pahole 1.18 got --skip_encoding_btf_vars option disabling BTF
generation for per-CPU variables in anticipation of some unanticipated
problems. So use this escape hatch to disable per-CPU var BTF info on
those problematic pahole versions. Users relying on availability of
per-CPU var BTFs would need to upgrade to pahole 1.22+, but everyone won't
notice any regressions.

The tab stop for Perl files is by default (at least in emacs) to be 4
spaces, where a tab is used for all 8 spaces. Add a local variable
comment to make vim do the same by default, and this will help keep the
file consistent in the future when others edit it via vim and not emacs.

Patch series "streamline_config.pl: Fix Perl spacing".
Talking with John Hawley about how vim and emacs deal with Perl files with
respect to tabs and spaces, I found that some of my Perl code in the
kernel had inconsistent spacing. The way emacs handles Perl by default is
to use 4 spaces per indent, but make all 8 spaces into a single tab. Vim
does not do this by default. But if you add the vim variable control:
# vim: softtabstop=4
to a perl file, it makes vim behave the same way as emacs.
The first patch is to change all 8 spaces into a single tab (mostly from
people editing the file with vim). The next patch adds the softtabstop
variable to make vim act like emacs by default.
This patch (of 2):
As Perl code tends to have 4 space indentation, but uses tabs for every 8
spaces, make that consistent in the streamline_config.pl code. Replace
all 8 spaces with a single tab.

The biggest change in this cycle is the new code to handle
and rewrite variable sized jump labels - which results in
slightly tighter code generation in hot paths, through the
use of short(er) NOPs.
Also a number of cleanups and fixes, and a change to the

clang versions prior to the current development version of 13.0.0 cannot
compile s390 after commit 3abbdfde5a65 ("s390/bitops: use register pair
instead of register asm") and the s390 maintainers do not intend to work
around this in the kernel. Codify this in scripts/min-tool-version.sh
similar to arm64 with GCC 5.1.0 so that there are no reports of broken
builds.
[hca@linux.ibm.com: breaking compatibility with older clang compilers
is intended to finally make use of a feature which allows the
compiler to allocate even/odd register pairs. This is possible since
a very long time with gcc, but only since llvm-project commit
d058262b1471 ("[SystemZ] Support i128 inline asm operands.") with
clang. Using that feature allows to get rid of error prone register
asm statements, of which the above named kernel commit is only the
first of a larger not yet complete series.]

To avoid unnecessary recompilations, mkcompile_h does not regenerate
compile.h if just the timestamp changed.
Though, if KBUILD_BUILD_TIMESTAMP is set, an explicit timestamp for the
build was requested, in which case we should not ignore it.
If a user follows the documentation for reproducible builds [1] and
defines KBUILD_BUILD_TIMESTAMP as the git commit timestamp, a clean
build will have the correct timestamp. A subsequent cherry-pick (or
amend) changes the commit timestamp and if an incremental build is done
with a different KBUILD_BUILD_TIMESTAMP now, that new value is not taken
into consideration. But it should for reproducibility.
Hence, whenever KBUILD_BUILD_TIMESTAMP is explicitly set, do not ignore
UTS_VERSION when making a decision about whether the regenerated version
of compile.h should be moved into place.

One common cause of modpost version generation failures is a failure to
prototype exported assembly functions - the tooling requires this for
exported functions even if they are not and should not be called from C
code in order to do the version mangling for symbols. Unfortunately the
error message is currently rather abstruse, simply saying that "version
generation failed" and even diving into the code doesn't directly show
what's going on since there's several steps between the problem and it
being observed.
Provide an explicit hint as to the likely cause of a version generation
failure to help anyone who runs into this in future more readily diagnose
and fix the problem.

[That flag] means that lld will use dynamic tags and section type

kernel itself doesn't care about these numbers; it determines the

The sphinx-pre-install supports installing sphinx via a virtual
environment using pip/pypi or directly from the distribution's
package, when --no-virtualenv is used.
However, even when --no-virtualenv, the current logic is
still recomending to install a virtual env, due to a regression.
It turns that the logic there is complex, as it depends on
several different conditions.
Split the code which recommends Sphinx on two separate

The ccache tool can be used to speed up cross-compilation, by calling the
compiler and binutils through ccache. For example, following should work:
$ export ARCH=arm64 CROSS_COMPILE="ccache aarch64-linux-gnu-"

but pahole fails to extract the BTF info from DWARF, breaking the build:

this fails because OBJCOPY is set to "ccache aarch64-linux-gnu-copy" and
later pahole is executed with the following command line:
LLVM_OBJCOPY=$(OBJCOPY) $(PAHOLE) -J --btf_base vmlinux $@
which gets expanded to:
LLVM_OBJCOPY=ccache aarch64-linux-gnu-objcopy pahole -J ...
instead of:

By using outlined checks we can achieve a significant code size
improvement by moving the tag-based ASAN checks into separate
functions. Unlike the existing CONFIG_KASAN_OUTLINE mode these
functions have a custom calling convention that preserves most
registers and is specialized to the register containing the address
and the type of access, and as a result we can eliminate the code
size and performance overhead of a standard calling convention such
as AAPCS for these functions.
This change depends on a separate series of changes to Clang [1] to
support outlined checks in the kernel, although the change works fine
without them (we just don't get outlined checks). This is because the
flag -mllvm -hwasan-inline-all-checks=0 has no effect until the Clang
changes land. The flag was introduced in the Clang 9.0 timeframe as
part of the support for outlined checks in userspace and because our
minimum Clang version is 10.0 we can pass it unconditionally.
Outlined checks require a new runtime function with a custom calling
convention. Add this function to arch/arm64/lib.
I measured the code size of defconfig + tag-based KASAN, as well
as boot time (i.e. time to init launch) on a DragonBoard 845c with
an Android arm64 GKI kernel. The results are below:
code size boot time
CONFIG_KASAN_INLINE=y before 92824064 6.18s
CONFIG_KASAN_INLINE=y after 38822400 6.65s
CONFIG_KASAN_OUTLINE=y 39215616 11.48s
We can see straight away that specialized outlined checks beat the
existing CONFIG_KASAN_OUTLINE=y on both code size and boot time
for tag-based ASAN.
As for the comparison between CONFIG_KASAN_INLINE=y before and after
we saw similar performance numbers in userspace [2] and decided
that since the performance overhead is minimal compared to the
overhead of tag-based ASAN itself as well as compared to the code
size improvements we would just replace the inlined checks with the
specialized outlined checks without the option to select between them,
and that is what I have implemented in this patch.

There were efforts to make 'make -s' really silent when it is a
warning-free build.
The conventional way was to let a shell script check ${quiet}, and if
it is 'silent_', suppress the stdout by itself.
With the previous commit, the 'cmd' takes care of it now. The 'cmd' is
also invoked from if_changed, if_changed_dep, and if_changed_rule.
You can omit ${quiet} checks in shell scripts when they are invoked
from the 'cmd' macro.

When building with 'make -s', no output to stdout should be printed.
As Arnd Bergmann reported [1], mkimage shows the detailed information
of the generated images.
I think this should be suppressed by the 'cmd' macro instead of by
individual scripts.
Insert 'exec >/dev/null;' in order to redirect stdout to /dev/null for
silent builds.
[Note about this implementation]
'exec >/dev/null;' may look somewhat tricky, but this has a reason.
Appending '>/dev/null' at the end of command line is a common way for
redirection, so I first tried this:
cmd = @set -e; $(echo-cmd) $(cmd_$(1)) >/dev/null
... but it would not work if $(cmd_$(1)) itself contains a redirection.
For example, cmd_wrap in scripts/Makefile.asm-generic redirects the
output from the 'echo' command into the target file.
It would be expanded into:
echo "#include <asm-generic/$*.h>" > $@ >/dev/null
Then, the target file gets empty because the string will go to /dev/null
instead of $@.
Next, I tried this:
cmd = @set -e; $(echo-cmd) { $(cmd_$(1)); } >/dev/null
The form above would be expanded into:
{ echo "#include <asm-generic/$*.h>" > $@; } >/dev/null
This works as expected. However, it would be a syntax error if
$(cmd_$(1)) is empty.
When CONFIG_TRIM_UNUSED_KSYMS is disabled, $(call cmd,gen_ksymdeps) in
scripts/Makefile.build would be expanded into:
set -e; { ; } >/dev/null
..., which causes an syntax error.
I also tried this:
cmd = @set -e; $(echo-cmd) ( $(cmd_$(1)) ) >/dev/null
... but this causes a syntax error for the same reason.
So, finally I adopted:
cmd = @set -e; $(echo-cmd) exec >/dev/null; $(cmd_$(1))

Now that all architectures implement ARCH_ATOMIC, the fallbacks are
generated before the instrumented wrappers are generated. Due to this,
in atomic-instrumented.h we can assume that the whole set of atomic
functions has been generated. Likewise, atomic-instrumented.h doesn't
need to provide a preprocessor definition for every atomic it wraps.
This patch removes the redundant ifdeffery.

I do not see a good reason why only the libelf development package must
be so carefully checked.
Kbuild generally does not check host tools or libraries.
For example, x86_64 defconfig fails to build with no libssl development
package installed.
scripts/extract-cert.c:21:10: fatal error: openssl/bio.h: No such file or directory
21 | #include <openssl/bio.h>
| ^~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
To solve the build error, you need to install libssl-dev or openssl-devel
package, depending on your distribution.
'apt-file search', 'dnf provides', etc. is your frined to find a proper
package to install.
This commit removes all the libelf checks from the top Makefile.
If libelf is missing, objtool will fail to build in a similar pattern:
.../linux/tools/objtool/include/objtool/elf.h:10:10: fatal error: gelf.h: No such file or directory
10 | #include <gelf.h>
You need to install libelf-dev, libelf-devel, or elfutils-libelf-devel
to proceed.
Another remarkable change is, CONFIG_STACK_VALIDATION (without
CONFIG_UNWINDER_ORC) previously continued to build with a warning,
but now it will treat missing libelf as an error.
This is just a one-time installation, so it should not hurt to break
a build and make a user install the package.
BTW, the traditional way to handle such checks is autotool, but according
to [1], I do not expect the kernel build would have similar scripting
like './configure' does.

"OBJECT_FILES_NON_STANDARD_vma.o := n" has a dependency bug. When
objtool source is updated, the affected object doesn't get re-analyzed
by objtool.
Peter's new variable-sized jump label feature relies on objtool
rewriting the object file. Otherwise the system can fail to boot. That
effectively upgrades this minor dependency issue to a major bug.
The problem is that variables in prerequisites are expanded early,
during the read-in phase. The '$(objtool_dep)' variable indirectly uses
'$@', which isn't yet available when the target prerequisites are
evaluated.
Use '.SECONDEXPANSION:' which causes '$(objtool_dep)' to be expanded in
a later phase, after the target-specific '$@' variable has been defined.

arm64 uses SP_EL0 to save the current task_struct address. While running
in EL0, SP_EL0 is clobbered by userspace. So if the upper bit is not 1
(not TTBR1), the current address is invalid. This patch checks the upper
bit of SP_EL0, if the upper bit is 1, lx_current() of arm64 will return
the derefrence of current task. Otherwise, lx_current() will tell users
they are running in userspace(EL0).
While arm64 is running in EL0, it is actually pointless to print current
task as the memory of kernel space is not accessible in EL0.

Patch series "scripts/gdb: clarify the platforms supporting lx_current and add arm64 support", v2.
lx_current depends on per_cpu current_task variable which exists on x86
only. so it actually works on x86 only. the 1st patch documents this
clearly; the 2nd patch adds support for arm64.
This patch (of 2):
x86 is the only architecture which has per_cpu current_task:
arch$ git grep current_task | grep -i per_cpu
x86/include/asm/current.h:DECLARE_PER_CPU(struct task_struct *, current_task);
x86/kernel/cpu/common.c:DEFINE_PER_CPU(struct task_struct *, current_task) ____cacheline_aligned =
x86/kernel/cpu/common.c:EXPORT_PER_CPU_SYMBOL(current_task);
x86/kernel/cpu/common.c:DEFINE_PER_CPU(struct task_struct *, current_task) = &init_task;
x86/kernel/cpu/common.c:EXPORT_PER_CPU_SYMBOL(current_task);
x86/kernel/smpboot.c: per_cpu(current_task, cpu) = idle;
On other architectures, lx_current() will lead to a python exception:
(gdb) p $lx_current().pid
Python Exception <class 'gdb.error'> No symbol "current_task" in current context.:
Error occurred in Python: No symbol "current_task" in current context.
To avoid more people struggling and wasting time in other architectures,

New feature:
The "func-no-repeats" option in tracefs/options directory. When set
the function tracer will detect if the current function being traced
is the same as the previous one, and instead of recording it, it will
keep track of the number of times that the function is repeated in a row.
And when another function is recorded, it will write a new event that
shows the function that repeated, the number of times it repeated and
the time stamp of when the last repeated function occurred.
Enhancements:
In order to implement the above "func-no-repeats" option, the ring
buffer timestamp can now give the accurate timestamp of the event
as it is being recorded, instead of having to record an absolute
timestamp for all events. This helps the histogram code which no longer
needs to waste ring buffer space.
New validation logic to make sure all trace events that access
dereferenced pointers do so in a safe way, and will warn otherwise.
Fixes:
No longer limit the PIDs of tasks that are recorded for "saved_cmdlines"
to PID_MAX_DEFAULT (32768), as systemd now allows for a much larger
range. This caused the mapping of PIDs to the task names to be dropped
for all tasks with a PID greater than 32768.
Change trace_clock_global() to never block. This caused a deadlock.
Clean ups:
Typos, prototype fixes, and removing of duplicate or unused code.
Better management of ftrace_page allocations.

Merge tag 'trace-v5.13' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/rostedt/linux-trace
Pull tracing updates from Steven Rostedt:
"New feature:
- A new "func-no-repeats" option in tracefs/options directory.
When set the function tracer will detect if the current function
being traced is the same as the previous one, and instead of
recording it, it will keep track of the number of times that the
function is repeated in a row. And when another function is
recorded, it will write a new event that shows the function that
repeated, the number of times it repeated and the time stamp of
when the last repeated function occurred.
Enhancements:
- In order to implement the above "func-no-repeats" option, the ring
buffer timestamp can now give the accurate timestamp of the event
as it is being recorded, instead of having to record an absolute
timestamp for all events. This helps the histogram code which no
longer needs to waste ring buffer space.
- New validation logic to make sure all trace events that access
dereferenced pointers do so in a safe way, and will warn otherwise.

There is a standard idiom for "if 'ret' holds an error, return it":
return ret < 0 ? ret : 0;
Developers prefer to keep the things as they are because stylistic
change to "return min(ret, 0);" breaks readability.
Let's suppress automatic generation for this type of patches.

The IRQF_ONESHOT should be present for threaded IRQ using default
primary handler. However intetrupt of many child devices, e.g. children
of MFD, is nested thus the IRQF_ONESHOT is not needed. The coccinelle
message about error misleads submitters and reviewers about the severity
of the issue, so make it a warning and mention possible false positive.

Skip patches generation for structs with a single field.
Changing a zero-length array to a flexible array member in a struct
with no named members breaks the compilation. However, reporting
such cases is still valuable, e.g. commit 637464c59e
("ACPI: NFIT: Fix flexible_array.cocci warnings").

LANG gives a weak default to each LC_* in case it is not explicitly
defined. LC_ALL, if set, overrides all other LC_* variables.
LANG < LC_CTYPE, LC_COLLATE, LC_MONETARY, LC_NUMERIC, ... < LC_ALL
This is why documentation such as [1] suggests to set LC_ALL in build
scripts to get the deterministic result.
LANG=C is not strong enough to override LC_* that may be set by end
users.

We maintain .gitignore and Makefiles so build artifacts are properly
ignored by Git, and cleaned up by 'make clean'. However, the code is
always changing; generated files are often moved to another directory,
or removed when they become unnecessary. Such garbage files tend to be
left over in the source tree because people usually git-pull without
cleaning the tree.
This is not only the noise for 'git status', but also a build issue
in some cases.
One solution is to remove a stale file like commit 223c24a7db ("kbuild:
Automatically remove stale <linux/version.h> file") did. Such workaround
should be removed after a while, but we forget about that if we scatter
the workaround code in random places.
So, this commit adds a new script to collect cleanings of stale files.
As a start point, move the code in arch/arm/boot/compressed/Makefile
into this script.

cmd_shipped uses 'cat' instead of 'cp' for copying a file. The reason
is explained in the commit [1], but it was in the pre-git era.
$ touch a
$ chmod -w a
$ cp a b
$ cp a b
cp: cannot create regular file 'b': Permission denied
Add comments so that you can see the reason without looking into
the history.

checkdeclares: find struct declared more than once. Inspired by
checkincludes.pl.
This script checks for duplicate struct declares. Note that this will not
take into consideration macros, so you should run this only if you know
you do have real dups and do not have them under #ifdef's. You could also
just review the results.

walk all map elements in a more robust and easier to verify
fashion
- sockmap: support UDP and cross-protocol BPF_SK_SKB_VERDICT
redirection

parsing scripts we already employ for bpf-helpers
- libbpf, bpftool: support static linking of BPF ELF files
- improve support for encapsulation of L2 packets
- xdp: restructure redirect actions to avoid a runtime lookup,
improving performance by 4-8% in microbenchmarks

- add sockopt support for common TCP options
- add support for common TCP msg flags
- include multiple address ids in RM_ADDR

redirection
- lpm: add support for batched ops in LPM trie
- add BTF_KIND_FLOAT support - mostly to allow use of BTF on
s390 which has floats in its headers files
- improve BPF syscall documentation and extend the use of kdoc
parsing scripts we already employ for bpf-helpers
- libbpf, bpftool: support static linking of BPF ELF files
- improve support for encapsulation of L2 packets
- xdp: restructure redirect actions to avoid a runtime lookup,
improving performance by 4-8% in microbenchmarks
- xsk: build skb by page (aka generic zerocopy xmit) - improve
performance of software AF_XDP path by 33% for devices which don't
need headers in the linear skb part (e.g. virtio)
- nexthop: resilient next-hop groups - improve path stability on
next-hops group changes (incl. offload for mlxsw)
- ipv6: segment routing: add support for IPv4 decapsulation
- icmp: add support for RFC 8335 extended PROBE messages
- inet: use bigger hash table for IP ID generation
- tcp: deal better with delayed TX completions - make sure we don't
give up on fast TCP retransmissions only because driver is slow in
reporting that it completed transmitting the original
- tcp: reorder tcp_congestion_ops for better cache locality
- mptcp:
- add sockopt support for common TCP options
- add support for common TCP msg flags
- include multiple address ids in RM_ADDR
- add reset option support for resetting one subflow
- udp: GRO L4 improvements - improve 'forward' / 'frag_list'
co-existence with UDP tunnel GRO, allowing the first to take place
correctly even for encapsulated UDP traffic
- micro-optimize dev_gro_receive() and flow dissection, avoid
retpoline overhead on VLAN and TEB GRO
- use less memory for sysctls, add a new sysctl type, to allow using
u8 instead of "int" and "long" and shrink networking sysctls
- veth: allow GRO without XDP - this allows aggregating UDP packets
before handing them off to routing, bridge, OvS, etc.
- allow specifing ifindex when device is moved to another namespace
- netfilter:
- nft_socket: add support for cgroupsv2
- nftables: add catch-all set element - special element used to
define a default action in case normal lookup missed
- use net_generic infra in many modules to avoid allocating
per-ns memory unnecessarily
- xps: improve the xps handling to avoid potential out-of-bound
accesses and use-after-free when XPS change race with other
re-configuration under traffic
- add a config knob to turn off per-cpu netdev refcnt to catch
underflows in testing
Device APIs:
- add WWAN subsystem to organize the WWAN interfaces better and
hopefully start driving towards more unified and vendor-
independent APIs
- ethtool:
- add interface for reading IEEE MIB stats (incl. mlx5 and bnxt
support)
- allow network drivers to dump arbitrary SFP EEPROM data,
current offset+length API was a poor fit for modern SFP which
define EEPROM in terms of pages (incl. mlx5 support)
- act_police, flow_offload: add support for packet-per-second
policing (incl. offload for nfp)
- psample: add additional metadata attributes like transit delay for
packets sampled from switch HW (and corresponding egress and
policy-based sampling in the mlxsw driver)
- dsa: improve support for sandwiched LAGs with bridge and DSA
- netfilter:
- flowtable: use direct xmit in topologies with IP forwarding,
bridging, vlans etc.
- nftables: counter hardware offload support
- Bluetooth:
- improvements for firmware download w/ Intel devices
- add support for reading AOSP vendor capabilities
- add support for virtio transport driver
- mac80211:
- allow concurrent monitor iface and ethernet rx decap
- set priority and queue mapping for injected frames
- phy: add support for Clause-45 PHY Loopback
- pci/iov: add sysfs MSI-X vector assignment interface to distribute
MSI-X resources to VFs (incl. mlx5 support)
New hardware/drivers:
- dsa: mv88e6xxx: add support for Marvell mv88e6393x - 11-port
Ethernet switch with 8x 1-Gigabit Ethernet and 3x 10-Gigabit
interfaces.
- dsa: support for legacy Broadcom tags used on BCM5325, BCM5365 and
BCM63xx switches
- Microchip KSZ8863 and KSZ8873; 3x 10/100Mbps Ethernet switches
- ath11k: support for QCN9074 a 802.11ax device
- Bluetooth: Broadcom BCM4330 and BMC4334
- phy: Marvell 88X2222 transceiver support
- mdio: add BCM6368 MDIO mux bus controller

- Actions Semi Owl Ethernet MAC
- can: driver for ETAS ES58X CAN/USB interfaces
Pure driver changes:
- add XDP support to: enetc, igc, stmmac

- virtio:
- page_to_skb() use build_skb when there's sufficient tailroom
(21% improvement for 1000B UDP frames)

Pull CFI on arm64 support from Kees Cook:
"This builds on last cycle's LTO work, and allows the arm64 kernels to
be built with Clang's Control Flow Integrity feature. This feature has
happily lived in Android kernels for almost 3 years[1], so I'm excited
to have it ready for upstream.
The wide diffstat is mainly due to the treewide fixing of mismatched
list_sort prototypes. Other things in core kernel are to address
various CFI corner cases. The largest code portion is the CFI runtime
implementation itself (which will be shared by all architectures
implementing support for CFI). The arm64 pieces are Acked by arm64
maintainers rather than coming through the arm64 tree since carrying
this tree over there was going to be awkward.
CFI support for x86 is still under development, but is pretty close.
There are a handful of corner cases on x86 that need some improvements
to Clang and objtool, but otherwise works well.

Currently, clang LTO built vmlinux won't work with pahole.
LTO introduced cross-cu dwarf tag references and broke
current pahole model which handles one cu as a time.
The solution is to merge all cu's as one pahole cu as in [1].
We would like to do this merging only if cross-cu dwarf
references happens. The LTO build mode is a pretty good
indication for that.
In earlier version of this patch ([2]), clang flag
-grecord-gcc-switches is proposed to add to compilation flags
so pahole could detect "-flto" and then merging cu's.
This will increate the binary size of 1% without LTO though.
Arnaldo suggested to use a note to indicate the vmlinux
is built with LTO. Such a cheap way to get whether the vmlinux
is built with LTO or not helps pahole but is also useful
for tracing as LTO may inline/delete/demote global functions,
promote static functions, etc.
So this patch added an elfnote with a new type LINUX_ELFNOTE_LTO_INFO.
The owner of the note is "Linux".
With gcc 8.4.1 and clang trunk, without LTO, I got
$ readelf -n vmlinux
Displaying notes found in: .notes
Owner Data size Description
...
Linux 0x00000004 func
description data: 00 00 00 00
...
With "readelf -x ".notes" vmlinux", I can verify the above "func"
with type code 0x101.
With clang thin-LTO, I got the same as above except the following:
description data: 01 00 00 00
which indicates the vmlinux is built with LTO.

scripts/Makefile.modsign is a subset of scripts/Makefile.modinst,
and duplicates the code. Let's merge them.
By the way, you do not need to run 'make modules_sign' explicitly
because modules are signed as a part of 'make modules_install' when
CONFIG_MODULE_SIG_ALL=y. If CONFIG_MODULE_SIG_ALL=n, mod_sign_cmd is
set to 'true', so 'make modules_sign' is not functional.
In my understanding, the reason of still keeping this is to handle
corner cases like commit 64178cb62c ("builddeb: fix stripped module
signatures if CONFIG_DEBUG_INFO and CONFIG_MODULE_SIG_ALL are set").

Both mod_strip_cmd and mod_compress_cmd are only used in
scripts/Makefile.modinst, hence there is no good reason to define them
in the top Makefile. Move the relevant code to scripts/Makefile.modinst.
Also, show separate log messages for each of install, strip, sign, and

Nathan reports that the mips defconfig emits the following warning:
WARNING: modpost: Symbol info of vmlinux is missing. Unresolved symbol check will be entirely skipped.
This false-positive happens when CONFIG_TRIM_UNUSED_KSYMS is enabled,
but no CONFIG option is set to 'm'.
Commit a0590473c5 ("nfs: fix PNFS_FLEXFILE_LAYOUT Kconfig default")
turned the last 'm' into 'y' for the mips defconfig, and uncovered
this issue.
In this case, the module feature itself is enabled, but we have no
module to build. As a result, CONFIG_TRIM_UNUSED_KSYMS drops all the
instances of EXPORT_SYMBOL. Then, modpost wrongly assumes vmlinux is
missing because vmlinux.symvers is empty. (As another false-positive
case, you can create a module that does not use any symbol of vmlinux).
The current behavior is to entirely suppress the unresolved symbol
warnings when vmlinux is missing just because there are too many.
I found the origin of this code in the historical git tree. [1]
If this is a matter of noisiness, I think modpost can display the
first 10 warnings, and the number of suppressed warnings at the end.
You will get a bit noisier logs when you run 'make modules' without
vmlinux, but such warnings are better to show because you never know
the resulting modules are actually loadable or not.
This commit changes the following:
- If any of input *.symver files is missing, pass -w option to let
the module build keep going with warnings instead of errors.
- If there are too many (10+) unresolved symbol warnings, show only
the first 10, and also the number of suppressed warnings.
[1]: https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/history/history.git/commit/?id=1cc0e0529569bf6a94f6d49770aa6d4b599d2c46

The -w option is meaningless for the first pass of modpost (vmlinux.o).
We know there are unresolved symbols in vmlinux.o, hence we skip
check_exports() and other checks when mod->is_vmlinux is set.

The external module build shows the following warning if Module.symvers
is missing in the kernel tree.
WARNING: Symbol version dump "Module.symvers" is missing.
Modules may not have dependencies or modversions.
I think this is an important heads-up because the resulting modules may
not work as expected. This happens when you did not build the entire
kernel tree, for example, you might have prepared the minimal setups
for external modules by 'make defconfig && make modules_preapre'.
A problem is that 'make modules' creates Module.symvers even without
vmlinux. In this case, that warning is suppressed since Module.symvers
already exists in spite of its incomplete content.
The incomplete (i.e. invalid) Module.symvers should not be created.
This commit changes the second pass of modpost to dump symbols into
modules-only.symvers. The final Module.symvers is created by
concatenating vmlinux.symvers and modules-only.symvers if both exist.
Module.symvers is supposed to collect symbols from both vmlinux and
modules. It might be a bit confusing, and I am not quite sure if it
is an official interface, but presumably it is difficult to rename it
because some tools (e.g. kmod) parse it.

Documentation/process/changes.rst defines the minimum assembler version
(binutils version), but we have never checked it in the build time.
Kbuild never invokes 'as' directly because all assembly files in the
kernel tree are *.S, hence must be preprocessed. I do not expect
raw assembly source files (*.s) would be added to the kernel tree.
Therefore, we always use $(CC) as the assembler driver, and commit
aa824e0c96 ("kbuild: remove AS variable") removed 'AS'. However,
we are still interested in the version of the assembler acting behind.
As usual, the --version option prints the version string.
$ as --version | head -n 1

But, we do not have $(AS). So, we can add the -Wa prefix so that
$(CC) passes --version down to the backing assembler.
$ gcc -Wa,--version | head -n 1

OK, we need to input something to satisfy gcc.

$ clang -no-integrated-as -Wa,--version -c -x assembler /dev/null -o /dev/null | head -n 1
GNU assembler (GNU Binutils for Ubuntu) 2.35.1
Clang with the integrated assembler fails like this:
$ clang -integrated-as -Wa,--version -c -x assembler /dev/null -o /dev/null | head -n 1
clang: error: unsupported argument '--version' to option 'Wa,'
For the last case, checking the error message is fragile. If the
proposal for -Wa,--version support [1] is accepted, this may not be
even an error in the future.
One easy way is to check if -integrated-as is present in the passed
arguments. We did not pass -integrated-as to CLANG_FLAGS before, but
we can make it explicit.
Nathan pointed out -integrated-as is the default for all of the
architectures/targets that the kernel cares about, but it goes
along with "explicit is better than implicit" policy. [2]
With all this in my mind, I implemented scripts/as-version.sh to
check the assembler version in Kconfig time.
$ scripts/as-version.sh gcc
GNU 23501
$ scripts/as-version.sh clang -no-integrated-as
GNU 23501
$ scripts/as-version.sh clang -integrated-as

The kernel build uses various tools, many of which are provided by the
same software suite, for example, LLVM and Binutils.
When you raise the minimum version of Clang/LLVM, you need to update
clang_min_version in scripts/cc-version.sh and also lld_min_version in
scripts/ld-version.sh.
Kbuild can handle CC=clang and LD=ld.lld independently, but it does not
make much sense to maintain their versions separately.
Let's create a central place of minimum tool versions so you do not need
to touch multiple files. scripts/min-tool-version.sh prints the minimum
version of the given tool.

The patch adding CONFIG_VMLINUX_MAP revealed a small defect in the
build system: link-vmlinux.sh takes decisions based on CONFIG_*
options, but changing one of those does not always lead to vmlinux
being linked again.
For most of the CONFIG_* knobs referenced previously, this has
probably been hidden by those knobs also affecting some object file,
hence indirectly also vmlinux.
But CONFIG_VMLINUX_MAP is only handled inside link-vmlinux.sh, and
changing CONFIG_VMLINUX_MAP=n to CONFIG_VMLINUX_MAP=y does not cause
the build system to re-link (and hence have vmlinux.map
emitted). Since that map file is mostly a debugging aid, this is
merely a nuisance which is easily worked around by just deleting
vmlinux and building again.
But one could imagine other (possibly future) CONFIG options that
actually do affect the vmlinux binary but which are not captured
through some object file dependency.
To fix this, make link-vmlinux.sh emit a .vmlinux.d file in the same
format as the dependency files generated by gcc, and apply the fixdep
logic to that. I've tested that this correctly works with both in-tree
and out-of-tree builds.

It can be quite useful to have ld emit a link map file, in order to
debug or verify that special sections end up where they are supposed
to, and to see what LD_DEAD_CODE_DATA_ELIMINATION manages to get rid
of.
The only reason I'm not just adding this unconditionally is that the
.map file can be rather large (several MB), and that's a waste of
space when one isn't interested in these things. Also make it depend

For example, when 'make clean' traverses the tree, it does not need

If the user selects the very first entry in a page and performs a
search-up operation, or selects the very last entry in a page and
performs a search-down operation that will not succeed (e.g., via
[/]asdfzzz[Up Arrow]), nconf will never terminate searching the page.
The reason is that in this case, the starting point will be set to -1
or n, which is then translated into (n - 1) (i.e., the last entry of
the page) or 0 (i.e., the first entry of the page) and finally the
search begins. This continues to work fine until the index reaches 0 or
(n - 1), at which point it will be decremented to -1 or incremented to
n, but not checked against the starting point right away. Instead, it's
wrapped around to the bottom or top again, after which the starting
point check occurs... and naturally fails.
My original implementation added another check for -1 before wrapping
the running index variable around, but Masahiro Yamada pointed out that
the actual issue is that the comparison point (starting point) exceeds
bounds (i.e., the [0,n-1] interval) in the first place and that,
instead, the starting point should be fixed.
This has the welcome side-effect of also fixing the case where the
starting point was n while searching down, which also lead to an
infinite loop.
OTOH, this code is now essentially all his work.
Amazingly, nobody seems to have been hit by this for 11 years - or at

Currently kernel-doc does not identify some cases of probable kernel
doc comments, for e.g. pointer used as declaration type for identifier,
space separated identifier, etc.
Some example of these cases in files can be:
i)" * journal_t * jbd2_journal_init_dev() - creates and initialises a journal structure"
in fs/jbd2/journal.c
ii) "* dget, dget_dlock - get a reference to a dentry" in
include/linux/dcache.h
iii) " * DEFINE_SEQLOCK(sl) - Define a statically allocated seqlock_t"
in include/linux/seqlock.h
Also improve identification for non-kerneldoc comments. For e.g.,
i) " * The following functions allow us to read data using a swap map"
in kernel/power/swap.c does follow the kernel-doc like syntax, but the
content inside does not adheres to the expected format.
Improve parsing by adding support for these probable attempts to write
kernel-doc comment.

This helper is the same as the sample code in the NCURSES HOWTO [1],
but it is over-engineering to be used for nconf.
I do not see any good reason to use the 'float' type just for the
division by 2.
All the call-sites pass a non-NULL pointer to the first argument,
so 'if (win == NULL) win = stdscr;' is dead code.
'if (startx != 0) x = startx;' is dead code because 'x' will be
overridden some lines below, by 'x = startx + (int)temp;'.
All the call-sites pass a non-zero value to the second argument,
so 'if (starty != 0)' is always true.
getyx(win, y, x) is also dead-code because both 'y' and 'x' are
overridden.
All the call-sites pass 0 to the third parameter, so 'startx' can
be removed.
All the call-sites pass a non-zero value to the fourth parameter,
so 'if (width == 0) width = 80;' is dead code.
The window will be refreshed later, so there is no need to call
refresh() in this function.
Change the type of the last parameter from 'chtype' to 'int' to be
aligned with the prototype, 'int wattrset(WINDOW *win, int attrs);'
I also slightly cleaned up the indentation style.

This change adds support for Clang’s forward-edge Control Flow
Integrity (CFI) checking. With CONFIG_CFI_CLANG, the compiler
injects a runtime check before each indirect function call to ensure
the target is a valid function with the correct static type. This
restricts possible call targets and makes it more difficult for
an attacker to exploit bugs that allow the modification of stored
function pointers. For more details, see:
https://clang.llvm.org/docs/ControlFlowIntegrity.html
Clang requires CONFIG_LTO_CLANG to be enabled with CFI to gain
visibility to possible call targets. Kernel modules are supported
with Clang’s cross-DSO CFI mode, which allows checking between
independently compiled components.
With CFI enabled, the compiler injects a __cfi_check() function into
the kernel and each module for validating local call targets. For
cross-module calls that cannot be validated locally, the compiler
calls the global __cfi_slowpath_diag() function, which determines
the target module and calls the correct __cfi_check() function. This
patch includes a slowpath implementation that uses __module_address()
to resolve call targets, and with CONFIG_CFI_CLANG_SHADOW enabled, a
shadow map that speeds up module look-ups by ~3x.
Clang implements indirect call checking using jump tables and
offers two methods of generating them. With canonical jump tables,
the compiler renames each address-taken function to <function>.cfi
and points the original symbol to a jump table entry, which passes
__cfi_check() validation. This isn’t compatible with stand-alone
assembly code, which the compiler doesn’t instrument, and would
result in indirect calls to assembly code to fail. Therefore, we
default to using non-canonical jump tables instead, where the compiler
generates a local jump table entry <function>.cfi_jt for each
address-taken function, and replaces all references to the function
with the address of the jump table entry.
Note that because non-canonical jump table addresses are local
to each component, they break cross-module function address
equality. Specifically, the address of a global function will be
different in each module, as it's replaced with the address of a local
jump table entry. If this address is passed to a different module,
it won’t match the address of the same function taken there. This
may break code that relies on comparing addresses passed from other
components.
CFI checking can be disabled in a function with the __nocfi attribute.
Additionally, CFI can be disabled for an entire compilation unit by
filtering out CC_FLAGS_CFI.
By default, CFI failures result in a kernel panic to stop a potential
exploit. CONFIG_CFI_PERMISSIVE enables a permissive mode, where the
kernel prints out a rate-limited warning instead, and allows execution
to continue. This option is helpful for locating type mismatches, but
should only be enabled during development.

The parser for the symbols defined on What: doesn't cover all
chars that need to be scaped, like '{' and '}'. Change the logic
to be more generic, and ensure that the same regex will be used
on both What: and when parsing the cross-references.
