If fq_classify() recycles a struct fq_flow because
a socket structure has been reallocated, we do not
set sk->sk_pacing_status immediately, but later if the
flow becomes detached.
This means that any flow requiring pacing (BBR, or SO_MAX_PACING_RATE)
might fallback to TCP internal pacing, which requires a per-socket
high resolution timer, and therefore more cpu cycles.

PRIO-like in how it is configured, meaning one needs to specify how many
bands there are, how many are strict and how many are dwrr, quanta for the
latter, and priomap.
The new Qdisc operates like the PRIO / DRR combo would when configured as

When a device is bound to a clsact qdisc, bind events are triggered to
registered drivers for both ingress and egress. However, if a driver
registers to such a device using the indirect block routines then it is
assumed that it is only interested in ingress offload and so only replays
ingress bind/unbind messages.
The NFP driver supports the offload of some egress filters when
registering to a block with qdisc of type clsact. However, on unregister,
if the block is still active, it will not receive an unbind egress
notification which can prevent proper cleanup of other registered
callbacks.
Modify the indirect block callback command in TC to send messages of
ingress and/or egress bind depending on the qdisc in use. NFP currently
supports egress offload for TC flower offload so the changes are only
added to TC.

With indirect blocks, a driver can register for callbacks from a device
that is does not 'own', for example, a tunnel device. When registering to
or unregistering from a new device, a callback is triggered to generate
a bind/unbind event. This, in turn, allows the driver to receive any
existing rules or to properly clean up installed rules.
When first added, it was assumed that all indirect block registrations
would be for ingress offloads. However, the NFP driver can, in some
instances, support clsact qdisc binds for egress offload.
Change the name of the indirect block callback command in flow_offload to
remove the 'ingress' identifier from it. While this does not change
functionality, a follow up patch will implement a more more generic
callback than just those currently just supporting ingress offload.

When user runs a command like
tc qdisc add dev eth1 root mqprio
KASAN stack-out-of-bounds warning is emitted.
Currently, NLA_ALIGN macro used in mqprio_dump provides too large
buffer size as argument for nla_put and memcpy down the call stack.
The flow looks like this:
1. nla_put expects exact object size as an argument;
2. Later it provides this size to memcpy;
3. To calculate correct padding for SKB, nla_put applies NLA_ALIGN
macro itself.
Therefore, NLA_ALIGN should not be applied to the nla_put parameter.
Otherwise it will lead to out-of-bounds memory access in memcpy.

The act_ct TC module shares a common conntrack and NAT infrastructure
exposed via netfilter. It's possible that a packet needs both SNAT and
DNAT manipulation, due to e.g. tuple collision. Netfilter can support
this because it runs through the NAT table twice - once on ingress and
again after egress. The act_ct action doesn't have such capability.
Like netfilter hook infrastructure, we should run through NAT twice to
keep the symmetry.

The recent commit 5c72299fba ("net: sched: cls_flower: Classify
packets using port ranges") had added filtering based on port ranges
to tc flower. However the commit missed necessary changes in hw-offload
code, so the feature gave rise to generating incorrect offloaded flow
keys in NIC.
One more detailed example is below:
$ tc qdisc add dev eth0 ingress
$ tc filter add dev eth0 ingress protocol ip flower ip_proto tcp \
dst_port 100-200 action drop
With the setup above, an exact match filter with dst_port == 0 will be
installed in NIC by hw-offload. IOW, the NIC will have a rule which is
equivalent to the following one.
$ tc qdisc add dev eth0 ingress
$ tc filter add dev eth0 ingress protocol ip flower ip_proto tcp \
dst_port 0 action drop
The behavior was caused by the flow dissector which extracts packet
data into the flow key in the tc flower. More specifically, regardless
of exact match or specified port ranges, fl_init_dissector() set the
FLOW_DISSECTOR_KEY_PORTS flag in struct flow_dissector to extract port
numbers from skb in skb_flow_dissect() called by fl_classify(). Note
that device drivers received the same struct flow_dissector object as
used in skb_flow_dissect(). Thus, offloaded drivers could not identify
which of these is used because the FLOW_DISSECTOR_KEY_PORTS flag was
set to struct flow_dissector in either case.
This patch adds the new FLOW_DISSECTOR_KEY_PORTS_RANGE flag and the new
tp_range field in struct fl_flow_key to recognize which filters are applied
to offloaded drivers. At this point, when filters based on port ranges
passed to drivers, drivers return the EOPNOTSUPP error because they do
not support the feature (the newly created FLOW_DISSECTOR_KEY_PORTS_RANGE
flag).

When a new filter is added to cls_api, the function
tcf_chain_tp_insert_unique() looks up the protocol/priority/chain to
determine if the tcf_proto is duplicated in the chain's hashtable. It then
creates a new entry or continues with an existing one. In cls_flower, this
allows the function fl_ht_insert_unque to determine if a filter is a
duplicate and reject appropriately, meaning that the duplicate will not be
passed to drivers via the offload hooks. However, when a tcf_proto is
destroyed it is removed from its chain before a hardware remove hook is
hit. This can lead to a race whereby the driver has not received the
remove message but duplicate flows can be accepted. This, in turn, can
lead to the offload driver receiving incorrect duplicate flows and out of
order add/delete messages.
Prevent duplicates by utilising an approach suggested by Vlad Buslov. A
hash table per block stores each unique chain/protocol/prio being
destroyed. This entry is only removed when the full destroy (and hardware
offload) has completed. If a new flow is being added with the same
identiers as a tc_proto being detroyed, then the add request is replayed
until the destroy is complete.

Try to explain one of the possible crash cases:
The "real" admin list is assigned when admin_sched is set to
new_admin, it happens after "swap", that assigns to oper_sched NULL.
Thus if call qdisc show it can crash.
Farther, next second time, when sched list is updated, the admin_sched
is not NULL and becomes the oper_sched, previous oper_sched was NULL so
just skipped. But then admin_sched is assigned new_admin, but schedules
to free previous assigned admin_sched (that already became oper_sched).
Farther, next third time, when sched list is updated,
while one more swap, oper_sched is not null, but it was happy to be
freed already (while prev. admin update), so while try to free
oper_sched the kernel panic happens at taprio_free_sched_cb().
So, move the "swap emulation" where it should be according to function
comment from code.

There is networking hardware that isn't based on Ethernet for layers 1 and 2.
For example CAN.
CAN is a multi-master serial bus standard for connecting Electronic Control
Units [ECUs] also known as nodes. A frame on the CAN bus carries up to 8 bytes
of payload. Frame corruption is detected by a CRC. However frame loss due to
corruption is possible, but a quite unusual phenomenon.
While fq_codel works great for TCP/IP, it doesn't for CAN. There are a lot of
legacy protocols on top of CAN, which are not build with flow control or high
CAN frame drop rates in mind.
When using fq_codel, as soon as the queue reaches a certain delay based length,
skbs from the head of the queue are silently dropped. Silently meaning that the
user space using a send() or similar syscall doesn't get an error. However
TCP's flow control algorithm will detect dropped packages and adjust the
bandwidth accordingly.
When using fq_codel and sending raw frames over CAN, which is the common use
case, the user space thinks the package has been sent without problems, because
send() returned without an error. pfifo_fast will drop skbs, if the queue
length exceeds the maximum. But with this scheduler the skbs at the tail are
dropped, an error (-ENOBUFS) is propagated to user space. So that the user
space can slow down the package generation.
On distributions, where fq_codel is made default via CONFIG_DEFAULT_NET_SCH
during compile time, or set default during runtime with sysctl
net.core.default_qdisc (see [1]), we get a bad user experience. In my test case
with pfifo_fast, I can transfer thousands of million CAN frames without a frame
drop. On the other hand with fq_codel there is more then one lost CAN frame per
thousand frames.
As pointed out fq_codel is not suited for CAN hardware, so this patch changes
attach_one_default_qdisc() to use pfifo_fast for "ARPHRD_CAN" network devices.
During transition of a netdev from down to up state the default queuing
discipline is attached by attach_default_qdiscs() with the help of
attach_one_default_qdisc(). This patch modifies attach_one_default_qdisc() to
attach the pfifo_fast (pfifo_fast_ops) if the network device type is

Some interface types could be nested.
(VLAN, BONDING, TEAM, MACSEC, MACVLAN, IPVLAN, VIRT_WIFI, VXLAN, etc..)
These interface types should set lockdep class because, without lockdep
class key, lockdep always warn about unexisting circular locking.
In the current code, these interfaces have their own lockdep class keys and
these manage itself. So that there are so many duplicate code around the
/driver/net and /net/.
This patch adds new generic lockdep keys and some helper functions for it.
This patch does below changes.
a) Add lockdep class keys in struct net_device
- qdisc_running, xmit, addr_list, qdisc_busylock
- these keys are used as dynamic lockdep key.
b) When net_device is being allocated, lockdep keys are registered.
- alloc_netdev_mqs()
c) When net_device is being free'd llockdep keys are unregistered.
- free_netdev()
d) Add generic lockdep key helper function
- netdev_register_lockdep_key()
- netdev_unregister_lockdep_key()
- netdev_update_lockdep_key()
e) Remove unnecessary generic lockdep macro and functions
f) Remove unnecessary lockdep code of each interfaces.
After this patch, each interface modules don't need to maintain
their lockdep keys.

UDP IPv6 packets auto flowlabels are using a 32bit secret
(static u32 hashrnd in net/core/flow_dissector.c) and
apply jhash() over fields known by the receivers.
Attackers can easily infer the 32bit secret and use this information
to identify a device and/or user, since this 32bit secret is only
set at boot time.
Really, using jhash() to generate cookies sent on the wire
is a serious security concern.
Trying to change the rol32(hash, 16) in ip6_make_flowlabel() would be
a dead end. Trying to periodically change the secret (like in sch_sfq.c)
could change paths taken in the network for long lived flows.
Let's switch to siphash, as we did in commit df453700e8

Using a cryptographically strong pseudo random function will solve this

With threaded interrupts enabled, the interrupt thread runs as SCHED_RR
with priority 50. If a user application with a higher priority preempts
the interrupt thread and tries to shutdown the network interface then it
will loop forever. The kernel will spin in the loop waiting for the
device to become idle and the scheduler will never consider the
interrupt thread because its priority is lower.
Avoid the problem by sleeping for a jiffy giving other tasks,
including the interrupt thread, a chance to run and make progress.
In the original thread it has been suggested to use wait_event() and
properly waiting for the state to occur. DaveM explained that this would
require to add expensive checks in the fast paths of packet processing.

When a application sends many packets with the same txtime, they may
be transmitted out of order (different from the order in which they
were enqueued).
This happens because when inserting elements into the tree, when the
txtime of two packets are the same, the new packet is inserted at the
left side of the tree, causing the reordering. The only effect of this
change should be that packets with the same txtime will be transmitted
in the order they are enqueued.
The application in question (the AVTP GStreamer plugin, still in
development) is sending video traffic, in which each video frame have
a single presentation time, the problem is that when packetizing,
multiple packets end up with the same txtime.
The receiving side was rejecting packets because they were being

The introduction of this schedule point was done in commit
2ba2506ca7 ("[NET]: Add preemption point in qdisc_run")
at a time the loop was not bounded.
Then later in commit d5b8aa1d24 ("net_sched: fix dequeuer fairness")
we added a limit on the number of packets.
Now is the time to remove the schedule point, since the default
limit of 64 packets matches the number of packets a typical NAPI
poll can process in a row.
This solves a latency problem for most TCP receivers under moderate load :
1) host receives a packet.
NET_RX_SOFTIRQ is raised by NIC hard IRQ handler
2) __do_softirq() does its first loop, handling NET_RX_SOFTIRQ
and calling the driver napi->loop() function
3) TCP stores the skb in socket receive queue:
4) TCP calls sk->sk_data_ready() and wakeups a user thread
waiting for EPOLLIN (as a result, need_resched() might now be true)
5) TCP cooks an ACK and sends it.
6) qdisc_run() processes one packet from qdisc, and sees need_resched(),
this raises NET_TX_SOFTIRQ (even if there are no more packets in
the qdisc)
Then we go back to the __do_softirq() in 2), and we see that new
softirqs were raised. Since need_resched() is true, we end up waking
ksoftirqd in this path :
if (pending) {
if (time_before(jiffies, end) && !need_resched() &&
--max_restart)
goto restart;
wakeup_softirqd();
}
So we have many wakeups of ksoftirqd kernel threads,
and more calls to qdisc_run() with associated lock overhead.
Note that another way to solve the issue would be to change TCP
to first send the ACK packet, then signal the EPOLLIN,
but this changes P99 latencies, as sending the ACK packet
can add a long delay.

Russell King points out that the ethtool API says zero is a valid return
value of __ethtool_get_link_ksettings:
* If it is enabled then they are read-only; if the link
* is up they represent the negotiated link mode; if the link is down,
* the speed is 0, %SPEED_UNKNOWN or the highest enabled speed and
* @duplex is %DUPLEX_UNKNOWN or the best enabled duplex mode.
So, it seems that taprio is not following the API... I'd suggest either

Rearrange locking in multiq_tune() in following ways:
- In loop that removes Qdiscs from disabled queues, call
qdisc_purge_queue() instead of qdisc_tree_flush_backlog() on Qdisc that
is being destroyed. Save the Qdisc in temporary allocated array and call
qdisc_put() on each element of the array after sch tree lock is released.
This is safe to do because Qdiscs have already been reset by
qdisc_purge_queue() inside sch tree lock critical section.
- Do the same change for second loop that initializes Qdiscs for newly
enabled queues in multiq_tune() function. Since sch tree lock is obtained
and released on each iteration of this loop, just call qdisc_put()
directly outside of critical section. Don't verify that old Qdisc is not
noop_qdisc before releasing reference to it because such check is already
performed by qdisc_put*() functions.

This allows taprio to offload the schedule enforcement to capable
network cards, resulting in more precise windows and less CPU usage.
The gate mask acts on traffic classes (groups of queues of same
priority), as specified in IEEE 802.1Q-2018, and following the existing
taprio and mqprio semantics.
It is up to the driver to perform conversion between tc and individual
netdev queues if for some reason it needs to make that distinction.
Full offload is requested from the network interface by specifying
"flags 2" in the tc qdisc creation command, which in turn corresponds to
the TCA_TAPRIO_ATTR_FLAG_FULL_OFFLOAD bit.
The important detail here is the clockid which is implicitly /dev/ptpN
for full offload, and hence not configurable.
A reference counting API is added to support the use case where Ethernet
drivers need to keep the taprio offload structure locally (i.e. they are
a multi-port switch driver, and configuring a port depends on the
settings of other ports as well). The refcount_t variable is kept in a
private structure (__tc_taprio_qopt_offload) and not exposed to drivers.
In the future, the private structure might also be expanded with a
backpointer to taprio_sched *q, to implement the notification system
described in the patch (of when admin became oper, or an error occurred,
etc, so the offload can be monitored with 'tc qdisc show').

With recent patch set that removed rtnl lock dependency from cls hardware
offload API rtnl lock is only taken when reading action data and can be
released after action-specific data is parsed into intermediate
representation. However, sample action psample group is passed by pointer
without obtaining reference to it first, which makes it possible to
concurrently overwrite the action and deallocate object pointed by
psample_group pointer after rtnl lock is released but before driver
finished using the pointer.
To prevent such race condition, obtain reference to psample group while it
is used by flow_action infra. Extend psample API with function
psample_group_take() that increments psample group reference counter.
Extend struct tc_action_ops with new get_psample_group() API. Implement the
API for action sample using psample_group_take() and already existing
psample_group_put() as a destructor. Use it in tc_setup_flow_action() to
take reference to psample group pointed to by entry->sample.psample_group
and release it in tc_cleanup_flow_action().
Disable bh when taking psample_groups_lock. The lock is now taken while
holding action tcf_lock that is used by data path and requires bh to be
disabled, so doing the same for psample_groups_lock is necessary to
preserve SOFTIRQ-irq-safety.

At least sch_red and sch_tbf don't implement ->tcf_block()
while still have a non-zero tc "class".
Instead of adding nop implementations to each of such qdisc's,
we can just relax the check of cops->tcf_block() in
tc_bind_tclass(). They don't support TC filter anyway.

Whenever MQ is not used on a multiqueue device, we experience
serious reordering problems. Bisection found the cited
commit.
The issue can be described this way :
- A single qdisc hierarchy is shared by all transmit queues.
(eg : tc qdisc replace dev eth0 root fq_codel)
- When/if try_bulk_dequeue_skb_slow() dequeues a packet targetting
a different transmit queue than the one used to build a packet train,
we stop building the current list and save the 'bad' skb (P1) in a
special queue. (bad_txq)
- When dequeue_skb() calls qdisc_dequeue_skb_bad_txq() and finds this
skb (P1), it checks if the associated transmit queues is still in frozen
state. If the queue is still blocked (by BQL or NIC tx ring full),
we leave the skb in bad_txq and return NULL.
- dequeue_skb() calls q->dequeue() to get another packet (P2)
The other packet can target the problematic queue (that we found
in frozen state for the bad_txq packet), but another cpu just ran
TX completion and made room in the txq that is now ready to accept
new packets.
- Packet P2 is sent while P1 is still held in bad_txq, P1 might be sent
at next round. In practice P2 is the lead of a big packet train
(P2,P3,P4 ...) filling the BQL budget and delaying P1 by many packets :/
To solve this problem, we have to block the dequeue process as long
as the first packet in bad_txq can not be sent. Reordering issues
disappear and no side effects have been seen.

For high speed adapter like Mellanox CX-5 card, it can reach upto
100 Gbits per second bandwidth. Currently htb already supports 64bit rate
in tc utility. However police action rate and peakrate are still limited
to 32bit value (upto 32 Gbits per second). Add 2 new attributes
TCA_POLICE_RATE64 and TCA_POLICE_RATE64 in kernel for 64bit support
so that tc utility can use them for 64bit rate and peakrate value to
break the 32bit limit, and still keep the backward binary compatibility.

Offloaded OvS datapath rules are translated one to one to tc rules,
for example the following simplified OvS rule:
recirc_id(0),in_port(dev1),eth_type(0x0800),ct_state(-trk) actions:ct(),recirc(2)
Will be translated to the following tc rule:
$ tc filter add dev dev1 ingress \
prio 1 chain 0 proto ip \
flower tcp ct_state -trk \
action ct pipe \
action goto chain 2
Received packets will first travel though tc, and if they aren't stolen
by it, like in the above rule, they will continue to OvS datapath.
Since we already did some actions (action ct in this case) which might
modify the packets, and updated action stats, we would like to continue
the proccessing with the correct recirc_id in OvS (here recirc_id(2))
where we left off.
To support this, introduce a new skb extension for tc, which
will be used for translating tc chain to ovs recirc_id to
handle these miss cases. Last tc chain index will be set
by tc goto chain action and read by OvS datapath.

This happens because the qdisc ->dequeue callback gets called. Which
again is not illegal, the qdisc will dequeue even when the interface is
up but doesn't have carrier (and hence SPEED_UNKNOWN), and the frames
will be dropped further down the stack in dev_direct_xmit().
And, at the end of the day, for what? For calculating the initial budget
of an interface which is non-operational at the moment and where frames
will get dropped anyway.
So if we can't figure out the link speed, default to SPEED_10 and move
along. We can also remove the runtime check now.

taprio_init may fail earlier than this line:
list_add(&q->taprio_list, &taprio_list);
i.e. due to the net device not being multi queue.
Attempting to remove q from the global taprio_list when it is not part
of it will result in a kernel panic.
Fix it by matching list_add and list_del better to one another in the
order of operations. This way we can keep the deletion unconditional
and with lower complexity - O(1).

Action sample doesn't properly handle psample_group pointer in overwrite
case. Following issues need to be fixed:
- In tcf_sample_init() function RCU_INIT_POINTER() is used to set
s->psample_group, even though we neither setting the pointer to NULL, nor
preventing concurrent readers from accessing the pointer in some way.
Use rcu_swap_protected() instead to safely reset the pointer.
- Old value of s->psample_group is not released or deallocated in any way,
which results resource leak. Use psample_group_put() on non-NULL value
obtained with rcu_swap_protected().
- The function psample_group_put() that released reference to struct
psample_group pointed by rcu-pointer s->psample_group doesn't respect rcu
grace period when deallocating it. Extend struct psample_group with rcu
head and use kfree_rcu when freeing it.

Without rtnl lock protection filters can no longer safely manage block
offloads counter themselves. Refactor cls API to protect block offloadcnt
with tcf_block->cb_lock that is already used to protect driver callback
list and nooffloaddevcnt counter. The counter can be modified by concurrent
tasks by new functions that execute block callbacks (which is safe with
previous patch that changed its type to atomic_t), however, block
bind/unbind code that checks the counter value takes cb_lock in write mode
to exclude any concurrent modifications. This approach prevents race
conditions between bind/unbind and callback execution code but allows for
concurrency for tc rule update path.
Move block offload counter, filter in hardware counter and filter flags
management from classifiers into cls hardware offloads API. Make functions
tcf_block_offload_{inc|dec}() and tc_cls_offload_cnt_update() to be cls API
private. Implement following new cls API to be used instead:
tc_setup_cb_add() - non-destructive filter add. If filter that wasn't
already in hardware is successfully offloaded, increment block offloads
counter, set filter in hardware counter and flag. On failure, previously
offloaded filter is considered to be intact and offloads counter is not
decremented.
tc_setup_cb_replace() - destructive filter replace. Release existing
filter block offload counter and reset its in hardware counter and flag.
Set new filter in hardware counter and flag. On failure, previously
offloaded filter is considered to be destroyed and offload counter is
decremented.
tc_setup_cb_destroy() - filter destroy. Unconditionally decrement block
offloads counter.
tc_setup_cb_reoffload() - reoffload filter to single cb. Execute cb() and
call tc_cls_offload_cnt_update() if cb() didn't return an error.
Refactor all offload-capable classifiers to atomically offload filters to
hardware, change block offload counter, and set filter in hardware counter
and flag by means of the new cls API functions.

concurrent modification. The lock is taken in read mode for read-only
traversal of cb_list in tc_setup_cb_call() and write mode in all other

- cb_list is not changed concurrently while filters is being offloaded on

- block->nooffloaddevcnt is checked while holding the lock in read mode,
but is only changed by bind/unbind code when holding the cb_lock in write

the drop pattern bifircates into one that more slowly increases
the codel drop rate and hits the bulk dropper more than it should.
The scan through the 1024 queues happens more often than it needs to.
This patch increases the codel count in the bulk dropper, but

Currently init call of all actions (except ipt) init their 'parm'
structure as a direct pointer to nla data in skb. This leads to race
condition when some of the filter actions were initialized successfully
(and were assigned with idr action index that was written directly
into nla data), but then were deleted and retried (due to following
action module missing or classifier-initiated retry), in which case
action init code tries to insert action to idr with index that was
assigned on previous iteration. During retry the index can be reused
by another action that was inserted concurrently, which causes
unintended action sharing between filters.
To fix described race condition, save action idr index to temporary
stack-allocated variable instead on nla data.

For qdisc's that support TC filters and set TCQ_F_CAN_BYPASS,
notably fq_codel, it makes no sense to let packets bypass the TC
filters we setup in any scenario, otherwise our packets steering
policy could not be enforced.
This can be reproduced easily with the following script:
ip li add dev dummy0 type dummy
ifconfig dummy0 up
tc qd add dev dummy0 root fq_codel
tc filter add dev dummy0 parent 8001: protocol arp basic action mirred egress redirect dev lo
tc filter add dev dummy0 parent 8001: protocol ip basic action mirred egress redirect dev lo
ping -I dummy0 192.168.112.1
Without this patch, packets are sent directly to dummy0 without
hitting any of the filters. With this patch, packets are redirected
to loopback as expected.
This fix is not perfect, it only unsets the flag but does not set it back
because we have to save the information somewhere in the qdisc if we
really want that. Note, both fq_codel and sfq clear this flag in their
->bind_tcf() but this is clearly not sufficient when we don't use any
class ID.

Currently, TC offers the ability to match on the MPLS fields of a packet
through the use of the flow_dissector_key_mpls struct. However, as yet, TC
actions do not allow the modification or manipulation of such fields.
Add a new module that registers TC action ops to allow manipulation of
MPLS. This includes the ability to push and pop headers as well as modify
the contents of new or existing headers. A further action to decrement the
TTL field of an MPLS header is also provided with a new helper added to
support this.
Examples of the usage of the new action with flower rules to push and pop
MPLS labels are:

action mirred egress redirect dev eth1

idr_for_each_entry_ul() is buggy as it can't handle overflow
case correctly. When we have an ID == UINT_MAX, it becomes an
infinite loop. This happens when running on 32-bit CPU where
unsigned long has the same size with unsigned int.
There is no better way to fix this than casting it to a larger
integer, but we can't just 64 bit integer on 32 bit CPU. Instead
we could just use an additional integer to help us to detect this
overflow case, that is, adding a new parameter to this macro.

When the taprio qdisc is running in "txtime offload" mode, it will
set the launchtime value (in skb->tstamp) for all the packets which do
not have the SO_TXTIME socket option. But, the TCP packets already have
this value set and it indicates the earliest departure time represented
in CLOCK_MONOTONIC clock.
We need to respect the timestamp set by the TCP subsystem. So, convert
this time to the clock which taprio is using and ensure that the packet
is not transmitted before the deadline set by TCP.

Currently, we are seeing non-critical packets being transmitted outside of
their timeslice. We can confirm that the packets are being dequeued at the
right time. So, the delay is induced in the hardware side. The most likely
reason is the hardware queues are starving the lower priority queues.
In order to improve the performance of taprio, we will be making use of the
txtime feature provided by the ETF qdisc. For all the packets which do not
have the SO_TXTIME option set, taprio will set the transmit timestamp (set
in skb->tstamp) in this mode. TAPrio Qdisc will ensure that the transmit
time for the packet is set to when the gate is open. If SO_TXTIME is set,
the TAPrio qdisc will validate whether the timestamp (in skb->tstamp)
occurs when the gate corresponding to skb's traffic class is open.
Following two parameters added to support this mode:
- flags: used to enable txtime-assist mode. Will also be used to enable
other modes (like hardware offloading) later.
- txtime-delay: This indicates the minimum time it will take for the packet
to hit the wire. This is useful in determining whether we can transmit
the packet in the remaining time if the gate corresponding to the packet is
currently open.
An example configuration for enabling txtime-assist:
tc qdisc replace dev eth0 parent root handle 100 taprio \\
num_tc 3 \\
map 2 2 1 0 2 2 2 2 2 2 2 2 2 2 2 2 \\
queues 1@0 1@0 1@0 \\
base-time 1558653424279842568 \\
sched-entry S 01 300000 \\
sched-entry S 02 300000 \\
sched-entry S 04 400000 \\
flags 0x1 \\
txtime-delay 40000 \\
clockid CLOCK_TAI
tc qdisc replace dev $IFACE parent 100:1 etf skip_sock_check \\
offload delta 200000 clockid CLOCK_TAI
Note that all the traffic classes are mapped to the same queue. This is
only possible in taprio when txtime-assist is enabled. Also, note that the
ETF Qdisc is enabled with offload mode set.
In this mode, if the packet's traffic class is open and the complete packet
can be transmitted, taprio will try to transmit the packet immediately.
This will be done by setting skb->tstamp to current_time + the time delta
indicated in the txtime-delay parameter. This parameter indicates the time
taken (in software) for packet to reach the network adapter.
If the packet cannot be transmitted in the current interval or if the
packet's traffic is not currently transmitting, the skb->tstamp is set to
the next available timestamp value. This is tracked in the next_launchtime
parameter in the struct sched_entry.
The behaviour w.r.t admin and oper schedules is not changed from what is
present in software mode.
The transmit time is already known in advance. So, we do not need the HR
timers to advance the schedule and wakeup the dequeue side of taprio. So,
HR timer won't be run when this mode is enabled.

Currently, etf expects a socket with SO_TXTIME option set for each packet
it encounters. So, it will drop all other packets. But, in the future
commits we are planning to add functionality where tstamp value will be set
by another qdisc. Also, some packets which are generated from within the
kernel (e.g. ICMP packets) do not have any socket associated with them.
So, this commit adds support for skip_sock_check. When this option is set,
etf will skip checking for a socket and other associated options for all
skbs.

TC hooks allow the application of filters and actions to packets at both
ingress and egress of the network stack. It is possible, with poor
configuration, that this can produce loops whereby an ingress hook calls
a mirred egress action that has an egress hook that redirects back to
the first ingress etc. The TC core classifier protects against loops when
doing reclassifies but there is no protection against a packet looping
between multiple hooks and recursively calling act_mirred. This can lead
to stack overflow panics.
Add a per CPU counter to act_mirred that is incremented for each recursive
call of the action function when processing a packet. If a limit is passed
then the packet is dropped and CPU counter reset.
Note that this patch does not protect against loops in TC datapaths. Its
aim is to prevent stack overflow kernel panics that can be a consequence
of such loops.

The TC_ACT_REINSERT return type was added as an in-kernel only option to
allow a packet ingress or egress redirect. This is used to avoid
unnecessary skb clones in situations where they are not required. If a TC
hook returns this code then the packet is 'reinserted' and no skb consume
is carried out as no clone took place.
This return type is only used in act_mirred. Rather than have the reinsert
called from the main datapath, call it directly in act_mirred. Instead of
returning TC_ACT_REINSERT, change the type to the new TC_ACT_CONSUMED
which tells the caller that the packet has been stolen by another process
and that no consume call is required.
Moving all redirect calls to the act_mirred code is in preparation for
tracking recursion created by act_mirred.

Brendan reports that the use of netem's packet corruption capability
leads to strange crashes. This seems to be caused by
commit d66280b12b ("net: netem: use a list in addition to rbtree")
which uses skb->next pointer to construct a fast-path queue of
in-order skbs.
Packet corruption code has to invoke skb_gso_segment() in case
of skbs in need of GSO. skb_gso_segment() returns a list of
skbs. If next pointers of the skbs on that list do not get cleared
fast path list may point to freed skbs or skbs which are also on
the RB tree.
Let's say skb gets segmented into 3 frames:
A -> B -> C
A gets hooked to the t_head t_tail list by tfifo_enqueue(), but it's
next pointer didn't get cleared so we have:
h t
|/
A -> B -> C
Now if B and C get also get enqueued successfully all is fine, because
tfifo_enqueue() will overwrite the list in order. IOW:
Enqueue B:
h t
| |
A -> B C
Enqueue C:
h t
| |
A -> B -> C
But if B and C get reordered we may end up with:
h t RB tree
|/ |
A -> B -> C B
\
C
Or if they get dropped just:
h t
|/
A -> B -> C
where A and B are already freed.
To reproduce either limit has to be set low to cause freeing of
segs or reorders have to happen (due to delay jitter).
Note that we only have to mark the first segment as not on the
list, "finish_segs" handling of other frags already does that.
Another caveat is that qdisc_drop_all() still has to free all
segments correctly in case of drop of first segment, therefore
we re-link segs before calling it.
v2:
- re-link before drop, v1 was leaking non-first segs if limit
was hit at the first seg
- better commit message which lead to discovering the above :)

When GSO frame has to be corrupted netem uses skb_gso_segment()
to produce the list of frames, and re-enqueues the segments one
by one. The backlog length has to be adjusted to account for
new frames.
The current calculation is incorrect, leading to wrong backlog
lengths in the parent qdisc (both bytes and packets), and
incorrect packet backlog count in netem itself.
Parent backlog goes negative, netem's packet backlog counts
all non-first segments twice (thus remaining non-zero even
after qdisc is emptied).
Move the variables used to count the adjustment into local
scope to make 100% sure they aren't used at any stage in
backports.

Fix nla_policy definition by specifying an exact length type attribute
to CTINFO action paraneter block structure. Without this change,
netlink parsing will fail validation and the action will not be
instantiated.
8cb081746c ("netlink: make validation more configurable for future")
introduced much stricter checking to attributes being passed via
netlink. Existing actions were updated to use less restrictive
deprecated versions of nla_parse_nested.
As a new module, act_ctinfo should be designed to use the strict
checking model otherwise, well, what was the point of implementing it.
Confession time: Until very recently, development of this module has
been done on 'net-next' tree to 'clean compile' level with run-time
testing on backports to 4.14 & 4.19 kernels under openwrt. This is how
I managed to miss the run-time impacts of the new strict
nla_parse_nested function. I hopefully have learned something from this
(glances toward laptop running a net-next kernel)
There is however a still outstanding implication on iproute2 user space
in that it needs to be told to pass nested netlink messages with the
nested attribute actually set. So even with this kernel fix to do
things correctly you still cannot instantiate a new 'strict'
nla_parse_nested based action such as act_ctinfo with iproute2's tc.

There is also a patch in here to add the proper SPDX header to a bunch

ctinfo is a new tc filter action module. It is designed to restore
information contained in firewall conntrack marks to other packet fields
and is typically used on packet ingress paths. At present it has two
independent sub-functions or operating modes, DSCP restoration mode &
skb mark restoration mode.
The DSCP restore mode:
This mode copies DSCP values that have been placed in the firewall
conntrack mark back into the IPv4/v6 diffserv fields of relevant
packets.
The DSCP restoration is intended for use and has been found useful for
restoring ingress classifications based on egress classifications across
links that bleach or otherwise change DSCP, typically home ISP Internet
links. Restoring DSCP on ingress on the WAN link allows qdiscs such as
but by no means limited to CAKE to shape inbound packets according to
policies that are easier to set & mark on egress.
Ingress classification is traditionally a challenging task since
iptables rules haven't yet run and tc filter/eBPF programs are pre-NAT
lookups, hence are unable to see internal IPv4 addresses as used on the
typical home masquerading gateway. Thus marking the connection in some
manner on egress for later restoration of classification on ingress is
easier to implement.
Parameters related to DSCP restore mode:
dscpmask - a 32 bit mask of 6 contiguous bits and indicate bits of the
conntrack mark field contain the DSCP value to be restored.
statemask - a 32 bit mask of (usually) 1 bit length, outside the area
specified by dscpmask. This represents a conditional operation flag
whereby the DSCP is only restored if the flag is set. This is useful to
implement a 'one shot' iptables based classification where the
'complicated' iptables rules are only run once to classify the
connection on initial (egress) packet and subsequent packets are all
marked/restored with the same DSCP. A mask of zero disables the
conditional behaviour ie. the conntrack mark DSCP bits are always
restored to the ip diffserv field (assuming the conntrack entry is found
& the skb is an ipv4/ipv6 type)
e.g. dscpmask 0xfc000000 statemask 0x01000000
|----0xFC----conntrack mark----000000---|
| Bits 31-26 | bit 25 | bit24 |~~~ Bit 0|
| DSCP | unused | flag |unused |
|-----------------------0x01---000000---|
| |
| |
---| Conditional flag
v only restore if set
|-ip diffserv-|
| 6 bits |
|-------------|
The skb mark restore mode (cpmark):
This mode copies the firewall conntrack mark to the skb's mark field.
It is completely the functional equivalent of the existing act_connmark
action with the additional feature of being able to apply a mask to the
restored value.
Parameters related to skb mark restore mode:
mask - a 32 bit mask applied to the firewall conntrack mark to mask out
bits unwanted for restoration. This can be useful where the conntrack
mark is being used for different purposes by different applications. If
not specified and by default the whole mark field is copied (i.e.
default mask of 0xffffffff)
e.g. mask 0x00ffffff to mask out the top 8 bits being used by the
aforementioned DSCP restore mode.

Function tcf_action_dump() relies on tc_action->order field when starting
nested nla to send action data to userspace. This approach breaks in
several cases:
- When multiple filters point to same shared action, tc_action->order field
is overwritten each time it is attached to filter. This causes filter
dump to output action with incorrect attribute for all filters that have
the action in different position (different order) from the last set
tc_action->order value.
- When action data is displayed using tc action API (RTM_GETACTION), action
order is overwritten by tca_action_gd() according to its position in
resulting array of nl attributes, which will break filter dump for all
filters attached to that shared action that expect it to have different
order value.
Don't rely on tc_action->order when dumping actions. Set nla according to
action position in resulting array of actions instead.

FQ packet scheduler assumed that packets could be classified
based on their owning socket.
This means that if a UDP server uses one UDP socket to send
packets to different destinations, packets all land
in one FQ flow.
This is unfair, since each TCP flow has a unique bucket, meaning
that in case of pressure (fully utilised uplink), TCP flows
have more share of the bandwidth.
If we instead detect unconnected sockets, we can use a stochastic
hash based on the 4-tuple hash.
This also means a QUIC server using one UDP socket will properly
spread the outgoing packets to different buckets, and in-kernel
pacing based on EDT model will no longer risk having big rb-tree on
one flow.
Note that UDP application might provide the skb->hash in an
ancillary message at sendmsg() time to avoid the cost of a dissection
in fq packet scheduler.

TCP stack makes sure packets for a given flow are monotically
increasing, but we want to allow UDP packets to use EDT as
well, so that QUIC servers can use in-kernel pacing.
This patch adds a per-flow rb-tree on which packets might
be stored. We still try to use the linear list for the
typical cases where packets are queued with monotically
increasing skb->tstamp, since queue/dequeue packets on
a standard list is O(1).
Note that the ability to store packets in arbitrary EDT
order will allow us to implement later a per TCP socket
mechanism adding delays (with jitter eventually) and reorders,
to implement convenient network emulators.

In commit 3c75f6ee13 ("net_sched: sch_htb: add per class overlimits counter")
we added an overlimits counter for each HTB class which could
properly reflect how many times we use up all the bandwidth
on each class. However, the overlimits counter in HTB qdisc
does not, it is way bigger than the sum of each HTB class.
In fact, this qdisc overlimits counter increases when we have
no skb to dequeue, which happens more often than we run out of
bandwidth.
It makes more sense to make this qdisc overlimits counter just
be a sum of each HTB class, in case people still get confused.
I have verified this patch with one single HTB class, where HTB
qdisc counters now always match HTB class counters as expected.
Eric suggested we could fold this field into 'direct_pkts' as
we only use its 32bit on 64bit CPU, this saves one cache line.

IEEE 802.1Q-2018 defines that a the cycle-time of a schedule may be

The IEEE 802.1Q-2018 defines two "types" of schedules, the "Oper" (from
operational?) and "Admin" ones. Up until now, 'taprio' only had
support for the "Oper" one, added when the qdisc is created. This adds
support for the "Admin" one, which allows the .change() operation to
be supported.
Just for clarification, some quick (and dirty) definitions, the "Oper"
schedule is the currently (as in this instant) running one, and it's
read-only. The "Admin" one is the one that the system configurator has
installed, it can be changed, and it will be "promoted" to "Oper" when
it's 'base-time' is reached.
The idea behing this patch is that calling something like the below,
(after taprio is already configured with an initial schedule):
$ tc qdisc change taprio dev IFACE parent root \
base-time X \
sched-entry <CMD> <GATES> <INTERVAL> \
...
Will cause a new admin schedule to be created and programmed to be
"promoted" to "Oper" at instant X. If an "Admin" schedule already
exists, it will be overwritten with the new parameters.
Up until now, there was some code that was added to ease the support
of changing a single entry of a schedule, but was ultimately unused.
Now, that we have support for "change" with more well thought
semantics, updating a single entry seems to be less useful.
So we remove what is in practice dead code, and return a "not
supported" error if the user tries to use it. If changing a single
entry would make the user's life easier we may ressurrect this idea,
but at this point, removing it simplifies the code.
For now, only the schedule specific bits are allowed to be added for a
new schedule, that means that 'clockid', 'num_tc', 'map' and 'queues'
cannot be modified.
Example:
$ tc qdisc change dev IFACE parent root handle 100 taprio \
base-time $BASE_TIME \
sched-entry S 00 500000 \
sched-entry S 0f 500000 \
clockid CLOCK_TAI
The only change in the netlink API introduced by this change is the
introduction of an "admin" type in the response to a dump request,
that type allows userspace to separate the "oper" schedule from the
"admin" schedule. If userspace doesn't support the "admin" type, it
will only display the "oper" schedule.

Right now, this isn't a problem, but the next commit allows schedules
to be added during runtime. When a new schedule transitions from the
inactive to the active state ("admin" -> "oper") the previous one can
be freed, if it's freed just after the RCU read lock is released, we
may access an invalid entry.
So, we should take care to protect the dequeue() flow, so all the
places that access the entries are protected by the RCU read lock.

We currently have two levels of strict validation:
1) liberal (default)
- undefined (type >= max) & NLA_UNSPEC attributes accepted
- attribute length >= expected accepted
- garbage at end of message accepted
2) strict (opt-in)
- NLA_UNSPEC attributes accepted
- attribute length >= expected accepted
Split out parsing strictness into four different options:
* TRAILING - check that there's no trailing data after parsing
attributes (in message or nested)
* MAXTYPE - reject attrs > max known type
* UNSPEC - reject attributes with NLA_UNSPEC policy entries
* STRICT_ATTRS - strictly validate attribute size
The default for future things should be *everything*.
The current *_strict() is a combination of TRAILING and MAXTYPE,
and is renamed to _deprecated_strict().
The current regular parsing has none of this, and is renamed to
*_parse_deprecated().
Additionally it allows us to selectively set one of the new flags
even on old policies. Notably, the UNSPEC flag could be useful in
this case, since it can be arranged (by filling in the policy) to
not be an incompatible userspace ABI change, but would then going
forward prevent forgetting attribute entries. Similar can apply
to the POLICY flag.
We end up with the following renames:
* nla_parse -> nla_parse_deprecated
* nla_parse_strict -> nla_parse_deprecated_strict
* nlmsg_parse -> nlmsg_parse_deprecated
* nlmsg_parse_strict -> nlmsg_parse_deprecated_strict
* nla_parse_nested -> nla_parse_nested_deprecated
* nla_validate_nested -> nla_validate_nested_deprecated

new caller of nla_parse()/nlmsg_parse() etc as re-introduced in the
next patch, while existing things will continue to work as is.
In effect then, this adds fully strict validation for any new command.

Even if the NLA_F_NESTED flag was introduced more than 11 years ago, most
netlink based interfaces (including recently added ones) are still not
setting it in kernel generated messages. Without the flag, message parsers
not aware of attribute semantics (e.g. wireshark dissector or libmnl's
mnl_nlmsg_fprintf()) cannot recognize nested attributes and won't display
the structure of their contents.
Unfortunately we cannot just add the flag everywhere as there may be
userspace applications which check nlattr::nla_type directly rather than
through a helper masking out the flags. Therefore the patch renames
nla_nest_start() to nla_nest_start_noflag() and introduces nla_nest_start()
as a wrapper adding NLA_F_NESTED. The calls which add NLA_F_NESTED manually
are rewritten to use nla_nest_start().
Except for changes in include/net/netlink.h, the patch was generated using
this semantic patch:

Recent changes that introduced unlocked flower did not properly account for
case when reoffload is initiated concurrently with filter updates. To fix
the issue, extend flower with 'hw_filters' list that is used to store
filters that don't have 'skip_hw' flag set. Filter is added to the list
when it is inserted to hardware and only removed from it after being
unoffloaded from all drivers that parent block is attached to. This ensures
that concurrent reoffload can still access filter that is being deleted and
prevents race condition when driver callback can be removed when filter is
no longer accessible trough idr, but is still present in hardware.
Refactor fl_change() to respect new filter reference counter and to release
filter reference with __fl_put() in case of error, instead of directly
deallocating filter memory. This allows for concurrent access to filter
from fl_reoffload() and protects it with reference counting. Refactor
fl_reoffload() to iterate over hw_filters list instead of idr. Implement
fl_get_next_hw_filter() helper function that is used to iterate over
hw_filters list with reference counting and skips filters that are being
concurrently deleted.

This patch does a code refactoring to taprio_get_start_time() function
to improve readability and report error properly.
If 'base' time is later than 'now', the start time is equal to 'base'
and taprio_get_start_time() is done. That's the natural case so we move
that code to the beginning of the function. Also, if 'cycle' calculation
is zero, something went really wrong with taprio and we should log that

Fix net reference counting in fl_change() and remove redundant call to
tcf_exts_get_net() from __fl_delete(). __fl_put() already tries to get net
before releasing exts and deallocating a filter, so this code caused flower
classifier to obtain net twice per filter that is being deleted.
Implementation of __fl_delete() called tcf_exts_get_net() to pass its
result as 'async' flag to fl_mask_put(). However, 'async' flag is redundant
and only complicates fl_mask_put() implementation. This functionality seems
to be copied from filter cleanup code, where it was added by Cong with
following explanation:
This patchset tries to fix the race between call_rcu() and
cleanup_net() again. Without holding the netns refcnt the
tc_action_net_exit() in netns workqueue could be called before
filter destroy works in tc filter workqueue. This patchset
moves the netns refcnt from tc actions to tcf_exts, without
breaking per-netns tc actions.
This doesn't apply to flower mask, which doesn't call any tc action code
during cleanup. Simplify fl_mask_put() by removing the flag parameter and
always use tcf_queue_work() to free mask objects.

Implementation of function rhashtable_insert_fast() check if its internal
helper function __rhashtable_insert_fast() returns non-NULL pointer and
seemingly return -EEXIST in such case. However, since
__rhashtable_insert_fast() is called with NULL key pointer, it never
actually checks for duplicates, which means that -EEXIST is never returned
to the user. Use rhashtable_lookup_insert_fast() hash table API instead. In
order to verify that it works as expected and prevent the problem from
happening in future, extend tc-tests with new test that verifies that no

the scheduling credits, we can't properly calculate the credits if the
device has failed to report the link speed.
In that case we can't dequeue packets assuming a wrong port rate that will
result into an inconsistent credit distribution.
This patch makes sure we fail to dequeue case:
1) __ethtool_get_link_ksettings() reports error or 2) the ethernet driver
failed to set the ksettings' speed value (setting link speed to
SPEED_UNKNOWN).
Additionally we properly re calculate the port rate whenever the link speed

This revert commit 46b1c18f9d ("net: sched: put back q.qlen into
a single location").
After the previous patch, when a NOLOCK qdisc is enslaved to a
locking qdisc it switches to global stats accounting. As a consequence,
when a classful qdisc accesses directly a child qdisc's qlen, such
qdisc is not doing per CPU accounting and qlen value is consistent.
In the control path nobody uses directly qlen since commit
e5f0e8f8e4 ("net: sched: introduce and use qdisc tree flush/purge

Since stats updating is always consistent with TCQ_F_CPUSTATS flag,
we can disable it at qdisc creation time flipping such bit.
In my experiments, if the NOLOCK flag is cleared, per CPU stats
accounting does not give any measurable performance gain, but it
waste some memory.
Let's clear TCQ_F_CPUSTATS together with NOLOCK, when enslaving
a NOLOCK qdisc to 'lock' one.
Use stats update helper inside pfifo_fast, to cope correctly with
TCQ_F_CPUSTATS flag change.
As a side effect, q.qlen value for any child qdiscs is always

to acquire/release the root spin lock and for qdisc_is_percpu_stats()

This change update the last few places checking the TCQ_F_NOLOCK to
do per CPU stats accounting according to qdisc_is_percpu_stats()
value.

John reports:
Recent refactoring of fl_change aims to use the classifier spinlock to
avoid the need for rtnl lock. In doing so, the fl_hw_replace_filer()
function was moved to before the lock is taken. This can create problems
for drivers if duplicate filters are created (commmon in ovs tc offload
due to filters being triggered by user-space matches).
Drivers registered for such filters will now receive multiple copies of
the same rule, each with a different cookie value. This means that the
drivers would need to do a full match field lookup to determine
duplicates, repeating work that will happen in flower __fl_lookup().
Currently, drivers do not expect to receive duplicate filters.
To fix this, verify that filter with same key is not present in flower
classifier hash table and insert the new filter to the flower hash table
before offloading it to hardware. Implement helper function
fl_ht_insert_unique() to atomically verify/insert a filter.
This change makes filter visible to fast path at the beginning of
fl_change() function, which means it can no longer be freed directly in
case of error. Refactor fl_change() error handling code to deallocate the
filter with rcu timeout.
