Alan Stern b89ee19ae6 USB: remove short initial timeout for device descriptor fetch
This patch (as905) removes a micro-optimization from the hub port
initialization code. Previously we had been using a short timeout on
the first attempt the read the device descriptor; now we will use the
standard timeout length.

It's not clear that the short timeout ever provided any benefit. And
now we know of one case where it actually hurts: The device can't meet
the short timeout and then it gets terminally confused.

This fixes Bugzilla #8444.

Alan Stern bf87ce5a06 USB: remove unneeded WARN_ON
This patch (as883) removes an out-of-date WARN_ON from the main HCD
endpoint-disable routine. The warning is triggered whenever an
endpoint is disabled while the root hub is suspended. In the past
that may not have been legal, but it definitely is legal now. Merely
unbinding a USB driver will do it.

Furthermore, I've never seen any occurrences of this warning that
really did signal an actual bug or error condition. At this point it
has outlived its purpose.

Alan Stern ef7f6c7084 USB: more autosuspend timer stuff
This patch (as879) ties up some loose ends from an earlier patch.
These are things I didn't think to include at the time but which
clearly belonged there.

If an autosuspend fails because driver activity races with
the autosuspend call, restart the autosuspend timer.

When a device is resumed by an external request, it counts
as device activity and should update the last_busy time so
that the next autoresume won't occur immediately.

Alan Stern 1941044aa9 USB: add "last_busy" field for use in autosuspend
This patch (as877) adds a "last_busy" field to struct usb_device, for
use by the autosuspend framework. Now if an autosuspend call comes at
a time when the device isn't busy but hasn't yet been idle for long
enough, the timer can be set to exactly the desired value. And we
will be ready to handle things like HID drivers, which can't maintain
a useful usage count and must rely on the time-of-last-use to decide
when to autosuspend.

The patch also makes some related minor improvements:

Move the calls to the autosuspend condition-checking routine
into usb_suspend_both(), which is the only place where it
	really matters.

If the autosuspend timer is already running, don't stop
	and restart it.

Replace immediate returns with gotos so that the optional
	debugging ouput won't be bypassed.

If autoresume is disabled but the device is already awake,
don't return an error for an autoresume call.

Don't try to autoresume a device if it isn't suspended.
(Yes, this undercuts the previous change -- so sue me.)

Don't duplicate existing code in the autosuspend work routine.

Fix the kerneldoc in usb_autopm_put_interface(): If an
autoresume call fails, the usage counter is left unchanged.

Kay Sievers 9f8b17e643 USB: make usbdevices export their device nodes instead of using a separate class
o The "real" usb-devices export now a device node which can
  populate /dev/bus/usb.

o The usb_device class is optional now and can be disabled in the
kernel config. Major/minor of the "real" devices and class devices
  are the same.

o The environment of the usb-device event contains DEVNUM and BUSNUM to
help udev and get rid of the ugly udev rule we need for the class
  devices.

o The usb-devices and usb-interfaces share the same bus, so I used
the new "struct device_type" to let these devices identify
themselves. This also removes the current logic of using a magic
  platform-pointer.
The name of the device_type is also added to the environment
which makes it easier to distinguish the different kinds of devices
  on the same subsystem.

  It looks like this:
    add@/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1d.1/usb2/2-1
    ACTION=add
    DEVPATH=/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1d.1/usb2/2-1
    SUBSYSTEM=usb
    SEQNUM=1533
    MAJOR=189
    MINOR=131
    DEVTYPE=usb_device
    PRODUCT=46d/c03e/2000
    TYPE=0/0/0
    BUSNUM=002
    DEVNUM=004

This udev rule works as a replacement for usb_device class devices:
  SUBSYSTEM=="usb", ACTION=="add", ENV{DEVTYPE}=="usb_device", \
    NAME="bus/usb/$env{BUSNUM}/$env{DEVNUM}", MODE="0644"

Updated patch, which needs the device_type patches in Greg's tree.

I also got a bugzilla assigned for this. :)

Alan Stern 6b157c9bf3 USB: separate autosuspend from external suspend
This patch (as866) adds new entry points for external USB device
suspend and resume requests, as opposed to internally-generated
autosuspend or autoresume. It also changes the existing
remote-wakeup code paths to use the new routines, since remote wakeup
is not the same as autoresume.

As part of the change, it turns out to be necessary to do remote
wakeup of root hubs from a workqueue. We had been using khubd, but it
does autoresume rather than an external resume. Using the
ksuspend_usb_wq workqueue for this purpose seemed a logical choice.

Alan Stern 1b42ae6d43 USB: fix race in HCD removal
This patch (as865) fixes a race in the HCD removal code discovered by
Milan Plzik. Arrival of an interrupt after the root hub was
unregistered could cause the root-hub status timer to start up, even
after it was supposed to have been shut down. The problem is fixed by
moving the del_timer_sync() call to after the HCD's stop() method, at
which time IRQ generation should be disabled.

Alan Stern 3f141e2aed USB: unconfigure devices which have config 0
Some USB devices do have a configuration 0, in contravention of the
USB spec. Normally 0 is supposed to indicate that a device is
unconfigured.

While we can't change what the device is doing, we can change usbcore.
This patch (as852) allows usb_set_configuration() to accept a config
value of -1 as indicating that the device should be unconfigured. The
request actually sent to the device will still contain 0 as the value.
But even if the device does have a configuration 0, dev->actconfig
will be set to NULL and dev->state will be set to USB_STATE_ADDRESS.

Without some sort of special-case handling like this, there is no way
to unconfigure these non-compliant devices.

Ole Andre Vadla Ravnas ad55d71a3d rndis_host learns ActiveSync basics
Windows Mobile 5 based devices described as supporting "ActiveSync":

 - Speak RNDIS but lack the CDC and union descriptors. This patch
updates the cdc ethernet code to fake ACM descriptors we need.

 - Require RNDIS_MSG_QUERY messages to include a buffer of the size the
response should generate. This patch updates the rndis host code to
   pass this will-be-ignored data.

The resulting RNDIS host code has been reported to work with several
WM5 based devices.

(Note that a fancier patch is available at synce.sf.net.)

Some bugfixes, affecting not just ActiveSync:
    (a)	when cleaning up after RNDS init fails, scrub the second interface
just like cdc_ether does, so disconnect won't oops.
    (b)	handle peripherals that use the pad-to-end-of-packet option; some
devices can't talk to us if that option doesn't work.
    (c)	when choosing configurations, don't forget about an RNDIS config
just because the RNDIS driver is dynamically linked.

Cleanup, streamlining, bugfixes, Kconfig, and matching hub driver update.

Alan Stern ee49fb5dc8 USB: keep count of unsuspended children
This patch (as818b) simplifies autosuspend processing by keeping track
of the number of unsuspended children of each USB hub. This will
permit us to avoid a good deal of unnecessary work all the time; we
will no longer have to create a bunch of workqueue entries to carry
out autosuspend requests, only to have them fail because one of the
hub's children isn't suspended.

The basic idea is simple. There already is a usage counter in the
usb_device structure for preventing autosuspends. The patch just
increments that counter for every unsuspended child. There's only one
tricky part: When a device disconnects we need to remember whether it
was suspended at the time (leave the counter alone) or not (decrement
the counter).

Alan Stern d25450c687 USB hub: simplify remote-wakeup handling
This patch (as817) simplifies the remote-wakeup processing in the hub

the standard USB resume routines. The hub_port_resume() function does
an initial get_port_status() to see whether the port has already
resumed itself (as it does when a remote-wakeup request is sent).
This will slow down handling of other resume events slightly, but not
enough to matter.

Luiz Fernando N. Capitulino 0c1ac4f25f USB: makes usb_endpoint_* functions inline.
We have no benefits of having the usb_endpoint_* functions as functions,

14893185	3108566	1108840	19110591	1239abf	vmlinux.inline

This is the result of a 2.6.19-rc3 kernel compiled with GCC 4.1.1 without
CONFIG_MODULES, CONFIG_CC_OPTIMIZE_FOR_SIZE, CONFIG_REGPARM options set.
USB support is fully enabled (while most of the other drivers are not),
and that kernel has most of the USB code ported to use the endpoint
functions.

That happens because a call to those functions are expensive (in terms
of bytes), while the function's size is smaller or have the same 'size' of

Alan Stern 93c8bf45e0 USB core: don't match interface descriptors for vendor-specific devices
This patch (as804) makes USB driver matching ignore the interface
class, subclass, and protocol if the device class is Vendor Specific.
Drivers can override this policy by specifying a Vendor ID as part
of the match; then vendor-specific matches are allowed.

Linus Walleij has reported a problem this patch fixes. When a
particular mass-storage device is switched from mass-storage mode to
Media Transfer Protocol, the interface class remains set to mass-storage
and usb-storage binds to it erroneously, even though the device class
changes to Vendor-Specific.

This may cause a problem for some drivers until their match records can
be updated to include Vendor IDs. But if it does, then those records
were broken to begin with.

inaky@linux.intel.com 88fafff9d7 usb hub: fix root hub code so it takes more than 15 devices per root hub
Wireless USB Host Controllers accept a large number of devices per
host, which shows up as a large number of ports in its root hub.

When the number of ports in a hub device goes over 16, the activation
of the hub fails with the cryptic message in klogd.

hub 2-0:1.0: activate --> -22

Following this further, it was seen that:

hub_probe()
  hub_configure()
    generates pipe number

pseudo allocates buffer 'maxp' bytes in size using usb_maxpacket()

The endpoint descriptor for a root hub interrupt endpoint is
      declared in
      drivers/usb/core/hcd.c:hs_rh_config_descriptor and declares it
to be size two (supporting 15 devices max).

    hub_activate()
      usb_hcd_submit_urb()
        rh_urb_enqueue()
urb->pipe is neither int nor ctl, so it errors out
            rh_queue_status()
Returns -EINVAL because the buffer length is smaller
than the minimum needed to report all the hub port
bits as in accordance with USB2.0[11.12.3]. There has
              to be trunc((PORTS + 1 + 7) / 8) bytes of space at
              least.

Alan Stern confirmed that the reason for reading maxpktsize and not
the right amount is because some hubs are known to return more data
and thus cause overflow.

So this patch simply changes the code to make the interrupt endpoint's
max packet size be at least the minimum required by USB_MAXCHILDREN
(instead of a fixed magic number) and add documentation for that. This
way we are always ahead of the limit.

inaky@linux.intel.com 4370525167 usb/hub: allow hubs up to 31 children
Current Wireless USB host hardware (Intel i1480 for example) allows up
to 22 devices to connect, thus bringing up the max number of children
in the WUSB Host Controller to 22 'fake' ports. Upcoming hardware
might raise that limit.

Makes almost no difference to go to 31, as the bit arrays are
byte-aligned (plus an extra bit in general), so 22 bits fit in 4 bytes
as 31 do.

As well, the only other array that depends on USB_MAXCHILDREN is
'struct usb_hub->indicator'. By declaring it 'u8' instead of 'enum
hub_led_mode', we reduce the size of each entry from 4 bytes (in i386)
to 1, which will add as we when are doubling USB_MAXCHILDREN
(with 16 the size of that array is 64 bytes, with 31 would be 128; by
using u8 that goes down to 31 bytes).

David Howells 7d12e780e0 IRQ: Maintain regs pointer globally rather than passing to IRQ handlers
Maintain a per-CPU global "struct pt_regs *" variable which can be used instead
of passing regs around manually through all ~1800 interrupt handlers in the
Linux kernel.

The regs pointer is used in few places, but it potentially costs both stack
space and code to pass it around. On the FRV arch, removing the regs parameter
from all the genirq function results in a 20% speed up of the IRQ exit path
(ie: from leaving timer_interrupt() to leaving do_IRQ()).

Where appropriate, an arch may override the generic storage facility and do
something different with the variable. On FRV, for instance, the address is
maintained in GR28 at all times inside the kernel as part of general exception
handling.

Having looked over the code, it appears that the parameter may be handed down
through up to twenty or so layers of functions. Consider a USB character
device attached to a USB hub, attached to a USB controller that posts its
interrupts through a cascaded auxiliary interrupt controller. A character
device driver may want to pass regs to the sysrq handler through the input
layer which adds another few layers of parameter passing.

I've build this code with allyesconfig for x86_64 and i386. I've runtested the
main part of the code on FRV and i386, though I can't test most of the drivers.
I've also done partial conversion for powerpc and MIPS - these at least compile
with minimal configurations.

This will affect all archs. Mostly the changes should be relatively easy.
Take do_IRQ(), store the regs pointer at the beginning, saving the old one:

	struct pt_regs *old_regs = set_irq_regs(regs);

And put the old one back at the end:

	set_irq_regs(old_regs);

Don't pass regs through to generic_handle_irq() or __do_IRQ().

In timer_interrupt(), this sort of change will be necessary:

	-	update_process_times(user_mode(regs));
	-	profile_tick(CPU_PROFILING, regs);
	+	update_process_times(user_mode(get_irq_regs()));
	+	profile_tick(CPU_PROFILING);

I'd like to move update_process_times()'s use of get_irq_regs() into itself,
except that i386, alone of the archs, uses something other than user_mode().

Some notes on the interrupt handling in the drivers:

(*) input_dev() is now gone entirely. The regs pointer is no longer stored in
     the input_dev struct.

(*) finish_unlinks() in drivers/usb/host/ohci-q.c needs checking. It does
something different depending on whether it's been supplied with a regs
     pointer or not.

(*) Various IRQ handler function pointers have been moved to type
     irq_handler_t.

Serge E. Hallyn 96b644bdec [PATCH] namespaces: utsname: use init_utsname when appropriate
In some places, particularly drivers and __init code, the init utsns is the
appropriate one to use. This patch replaces those with a the init_utsname
helper.

Changes: Removed several uses of init_utsname(). Hope I picked all the
right ones in net/ipv4/ipconfig.c. These are now changed to
utsname() (the per-process namespace utsname) in the previous
	patch (2/7)

Eric W. Biederman 2425c08b37 [PATCH] usb: fixup usb so it uses struct pid
The problem with remembering a user space process by its pid is that it is
possible that the process will exit, pid wrap around will occur.
Converting to a struct pid avoid that problem, and paves the way for
implementing a pid namespace.

Also since usb is the only user of kill_proc_info_as_uid rename
kill_proc_info_as_uid to kill_pid_info_as_uid and have the new version take
a struct pid.

This patch (as739) adds the basic infrastructure for USB autosuspend
and autoresume. The main features are:

PM usage counters added to struct usb_device and struct

them or they are currently in use.

Flag added to usb_device indicating whether the current
suspend/resume operation originated from outside or as an
	autosuspend/autoresume.

Flag added to usb_driver indicating whether the driver
supports autosuspend. If not, no device bound to the driver
	will be autosuspended.

Mutex added to usb_device for protecting PM operations.
Unlike the device semaphore, the locking rule for the pm_mutex
is that you must acquire the locks going _up_ the device tree.

New routines handling autosuspend/autoresume requests for
	interfaces and devices.

Suspend and resume requests are propagated up the device tree
(but not outside the USB subsystem).

work_struct added to usb_device, for carrying out delayed

As part of the ongoing program to flatten out the HCD bus-glue layer,

from struct usb_bus. hcpriv and release were not being used for
anything worthwhile, and kref has been moved into the enclosing

The one interesting aspect is that the dev_set_drvdata call was
removed from usb_put_hcd, where it clearly doesn't belong. This means
the driver private data won't get reset to NULL. It shouldn't cause

Alan Stern d5cbad4b8b usbcore: khubd and busy-port handling
We don't want khubd to start interfering in the device-resume process
merely because the PORT_STATUS_C_SUSPEND feature happens to be set.
Ports need to be marked as busy while a resume is taking place.

In addition, so long as ports are marked as busy, khubd won't be able to
clear their various status-change features. On an interrupt-driven root

Alan Stern 455b25fb20 usbcore: make hcd_endpoint_disable wait for queue to drain
The inconsistent lock state problem in usbcore (the one that shows up
when an HCD is unloaded) comes down to two inter-related problems:

usb_rh_urb_dequeue() isn't set up to be called with interrupts
	disabled.

hcd_endpoint_disable() doesn't wait for all URBs on the
	endpoint's queue to complete.

The two problems are related because the one type of URB that isn't
likely to be complete when hcd_endpoint_disable() returns is a root-hub
URB. Right now usb_rh_urb_dequeue() waits for them to complete, and it
assumes interrupts are enabled so it can wait. But
hcd_endpoint_disable() calls it with interrupts disabled.

Now, it should be legal to unlink root-hub URBs with interrupts
disabled. The solution is to move the waiting into
hcd_endpoint_disable(), where it belongs. This patch (as754) does that.

It turns out to be completely safe to replace the del_timer_sync() with
a simple del_timer(). It doesn't matter if the timer routine is
running; hcd_root_hub_lock will synchronize the two threads and the
status URB will complete with an unlink error, as it should.

Perhaps the most interesting challenge is where the hub driver tests to

straightforward, since we expect that the children _will_ be suspended.
But when CONFIG_USB_SUSPEND isn't set, it's not so clear what should be

that value is owned by the PM core, not by usbcore. This patch (as718b)
adds a new flag so that we can accurately tell which interfaces are

At first one might think these flags aren't needed, since interfaces
will be suspended along with their devices. It turns out there are a

Alan Stern a8e7c56535 usbcore: resume device resume recursion
This patch (as717b) removes the existing recursion in hub resume code:
Resuming a hub will no longer automatically resume the devices attached
to the hub.

At the same time, it adds one level of recursion: Suspending a USB
device will automatically suspend all the device's interfaces. Failure
at an intermediate stage will cause all the already-suspended interfaces
to be resumed. Attempts to suspend or resume an interface by itself will
do nothing, although they won't return an error. Thus the regular
system-suspend and system-resume procedures should continue to work as
before; only runtime PM will be affected.

The patch also removes the code that tests state of the interfaces
before suspending a device. It's no longer needed, since everything
gets suspended together.

This patch (as714b) makes usb_generic into a usb_device_driver capable

the work that used to get done during discovery or removal of a USB

same as before.

interface. Support routines like usb_register_device_driver,
usb_deregister_device_driver, usb_probe_device, and usb_unbind_device

Unlike an earlier version of this patch, the new code is type-safe. To
accomplish this, the existing struct driver embedded in struct
usb_driver had to be wrapped in an intermediate wrapper. This enables
the core to tell at runtime whether a particular struct driver belongs
to a device driver or to an interface driver.

Alan Stern 4a2a8a2cce usbfs: private mutex for open, release, and remove
The usbfs code doesn't provide sufficient mutual exclusion among open,
release, and remove. Release vs. remove is okay because they both
acquire the device lock, but open is not exclusive with either one. All
three routines modify the udev->filelist linked list, so they must not
run concurrently.

Apparently someone gave this a minimum amount of thought in the past by
explicitly acquiring the BKL at the start of the usbdev_open routine.
Oddly enough, there's a comment pointing out that locking is unnecessary
because chrdev_open already has acquired the BKL.

But this ignores the point that the files in /proc/bus/usb/* are not
char device files; they are regular files and so they don't get any
special locking. Furthermore it's necessary to acquire the same lock in
the release and remove routines, which the code does not do.

Yet another problem arises because the same file_operations structure is
accessible through both the /proc/bus/usb/* and /dev/usb/usbdev* file
nodes. Even when one of them has been removed, it's still possible for
userspace to open the other. So simple locking around the individual
remove routines is insufficient; we need to lock the entire
usb_notify_remove_device notifier chain.

Rather than rely on the BKL, this patch (as723) introduces a new private
mutex for the purpose. Holding the BKL while invoking a notifier chain
doesn't seem like a good idea.

Theodore Ts'o 8e18e2941c [PATCH] inode_diet: Replace inode.u.generic_ip with inode.i_private
The following patches reduce the size of the VFS inode structure by 28 bytes
on a UP x86. (It would be more on an x86_64 system). This is a 10% reduction
in the inode size on a UP kernel that is configured in a production mode
(i.e., with no spinlock or other debugging functions enabled; if you want to
save memory taken up by in-core inodes, the first thing you should do is
disable the debugging options; they are responsible for a huge amount of bloat
in the VFS inode structure).

This patch:

The filesystem or device-specific pointer in the inode is inside a union,
which is pretty pointless given that all 30+ users of this field have been
using the void pointer. Get rid of the union and rename it to i_private, with
a comment to explain who is allowed to use the void pointer. This is just a
cleanup, but it allows us to reuse the union 'u' for something something where
the union will actually be used.

Arjan van de Ven 8e7795ef6b [PATCH] lockdep: annotate USBFS
In usbfs's fs_remove_file() function, the aim is to remove a file or
directory from usbfs. This is done by first taking the i_mutex of the
parent directory of this file/dir via
  mutex_lock(&parent->d_inode->i_mutex);
and then to call either usbfs_rmdir() for a directory or usbfs_unlink()
for a file. Both these functions then take the i_mutex for the
to-be-removed object themselves:
  mutex_lock(&inode->i_mutex);

This is a classical parent->child locking order relationship that the VFS uses
all over the place; the VFS locking rule is "you need to take the parent
first". This patch annotates the usbfs code to make this explicit and thus
informs the lockdep code that those two locks indeed have this relationship.

The rules for unlink that we already use in the VFS for unlink are to use
I_MUTEX_PARENT for the parent directory, and a normal mutex for the file
itself; this patch follows that convention.

David Howells 454e2398be [PATCH] VFS: Permit filesystem to override root dentry on mount
Extend the get_sb() filesystem operation to take an extra argument that
permits the VFS to pass in the target vfsmount that defines the mountpoint.

The filesystem is then required to manually set the superblock and root dentry
pointers. For most filesystems, this should be done with simple_set_mnt()
which will set the superblock pointer and then set the root dentry to the
superblock's s_root (as per the old default behaviour).

The get_sb() op now returns an integer as there's now no need to return the
superblock pointer.

This patch permits a superblock to be implicitly shared amongst several mount
points, such as can be done with NFS to avoid potential inode aliasing. In
such a case, simple_set_mnt() would not be called, and instead the mnt_root
and mnt_sb would be set directly.

The patch also makes the following changes:

(*) the get_sb_*() convenience functions in the core kernel now take a vfsmount
pointer argument and return an integer, so most filesystems have to change
     very little.

(*) If one of the convenience function is not used, then get_sb() should
normally call simple_set_mnt() to instantiate the vfsmount. This will
always return 0, and so can be tail-called from get_sb().

(*) generic_shutdown_super() now calls shrink_dcache_sb() to clean up the
dcache upon superblock destruction rather than shrink_dcache_anon().

This is required because the superblock may now have multiple trees that
aren't actually bound to s_root, but that still need to be cleaned up. The
currently called functions assume that the whole tree is rooted at s_root,
and that anonymous dentries are not the roots of trees which results in
     dentries being left unculled.

However, with the way NFS superblock sharing are currently set to be
implemented, these assumptions are violated: the root of the filesystem is
simply a dummy dentry and inode (the real inode for '/' may well be
inaccessible), and all the vfsmounts are rooted on anonymous[*] dentries
     with child trees.

[*] Anonymous until discovered from another tree.

(*) The documentation has been adjusted, including the additional bit of
changing ext2_* into foo_* in the documentation.

Alan Stern 79efa097e7 [PATCH] usbcore: port reset for composite devices
This patch (as699) adds usb_reset_composite_device(), a routine for
sending a USB port reset to a device with multiple interfaces owned by
different drivers. Drivers are notified about impending and completed
resets through two new methods in the usb_driver structure.

The patch modifieds the usbfs ioctl code to make it use the new routine
instead of usb_reset_device(). Follow-up patches will modify the hub,
usb-storage, and usbhid drivers so they can utilize this new API.

Daniel Drake 1fbe75e12f [PATCH] USB: print message when device is rejected due to insufficient power
2.6.16 introduces USB power budgeting in the Linux kernel, and since then, a
fair number of users have observed that some of their devices no longer work in
unpowered hubs (this is not a bug, the devices claim that they need more than
100mA).

The very least we can do is print an informational message to the kernel log
when this happens, otherwise it is not at all clear why the device was not
accepted.

Micah Dowty e016683d59 [PATCH] USB: Remove 4088-byte limit on usbfs control URBs
This patch removes the artificial 4088-byte limit that usbfs
currently places on Control transfers. The USB spec does not
specify a strict limit on the size of an entire control transfer.
It does, however, state that the data stage "follows the same
protocol rules as bulk transfers." (USB 2, 8.5.3)

The level of support for large control transfers in real host
controllers varies, but it's important to support at least 4K
transfers. Windows enforces a maximum control transfer size
of 4K, so there exists some hardware that requires a full 4096
byte data stage. Without this patch, we fall short of that by
8 bytes on architectures with a 4K page size, and it becomes
impossible to support such hardware with a user-space driver.

Since any limit placed on control transfers by usbfs would be
arbitrary, this patch replaces the PAGE_SIZE limit with the same
arbitrary limit used by bulk transfers.

Alan Stern 4489a5712b [PATCH] USB: usbcore: always turn on hub port power
Some hubs claim not to support port-power switching, and right now the
hub driver believes them and does not enable power to their ports.
However it turns out that even though they don't actually switch power,
they do ignore all events on a port until told to turn on the power!
This problem has been reported by several users.

This revised patch (as672b) makes the hub driver always try to turn on
port power to all hubs, regardless of what the hub descriptor says. It
also adds a comment explaining the need for this.

David S. Miller c6387a48cf [SPARC]: Kill __irq_itoa().
This ugly hack was long overdue to die.

It was a way to print out Sparc interrupts in a more freindly format,
since IRQ numbers were arbitrary opaque 32-bit integers which vectored
into PIL levels. These 32-bit integers were not necessarily in the
0-->NR_IRQS range, but the PILs they vectored to were.

The idea now is that we will increase NR_IRQS a little bit and use a
virtual<-->real IRQ number mapping scheme similar to PowerPC.

That makes this IRQ printing hack irrelevant, and furthermore only a
handful of drivers actually used __irq_itoa() making it even less
useful.

      dmi_scan.c is arch-independent and is used by i386, x86_64, and ia64.
Currently all three arches compile it from arch/i386, which means that ia64

Benjamin Herrenschmidt e8222502ee [PATCH] powerpc: Kill _machine and hard-coded platform numbers
This removes statically assigned platform numbers and reworks the

We now have a machine_is() macro that replaces the comparisons of
_machine with the various PLATFORM_* constants. This commit also

Alan Stern e041c68341 [PATCH] Notifier chain update: API changes
The kernel's implementation of notifier chains is unsafe. There is no
protection against entries being added to or removed from a chain while the
chain is in use. The issues were discussed in this thread:

    http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=linux-kernel&m=113018709002036&w=2

We noticed that notifier chains in the kernel fall into two basic usage
classes:

"Blocking" chains are always called from a process context
	and the callout routines are allowed to sleep;

"Atomic" chains can be called from an atomic context and
the callout routines are not allowed to sleep.

We decided to codify this distinction and make it part of the API. Therefore
this set of patches introduces three new, parallel APIs: one for blocking
notifiers, one for atomic notifiers, and one for "raw" notifiers (which is
really just the old API under a new name). New kinds of data structures are
used for the heads of the chains, and new routines are defined for
registration, unregistration, and calling a chain. The three APIs are
explained in include/linux/notifier.h and their implementation is in
kernel/sys.c.

With atomic and blocking chains, the implementation guarantees that the chain
links will not be corrupted and that chain callers will not get messed up by
entries being added or removed. For raw chains the implementation provides no
guarantees at all; users of this API must provide their own protections. (The
idea was that situations may come up where the assumptions of the atomic and
blocking APIs are not appropriate, so it should be possible for users to
handle these things in their own way.)

There are some limitations, which should not be too hard to live with. For
atomic/blocking chains, registration and unregistration must always be done in
a process context since the chain is protected by a mutex/rwsem. Also, a
callout routine for a non-raw chain must not try to register or unregister
entries on its own chain. (This did happen in a couple of places and the code
had to be changed to avoid it.)

Since atomic chains may be called from within an NMI handler, they cannot use
spinlocks for synchronization. Instead we use RCU. The overhead falls almost
entirely in the unregister routine, which is okay since unregistration is much
less frequent that calling a chain.

Here is the list of chains that we adjusted and their classifications. None
of them use the raw API, so for the moment it is only a placeholder.

  BLOCKING CHAINS
  ---------------
arch/powerpc/platforms/pseries/reconfig.c:	pSeries_reconfig_chain

arch/x86_64/kernel/process.c idle_notifier

kernel/sys.c reboot_notifier_list
net/core/dev.c netdev_chain
net/decnet/dn_dev.c: dnaddr_chain
net/ipv4/devinet.c: inetaddr_chain

It's possible that some of these classifications are wrong. If they are,
please let us know or submit a patch to fix them. Note that any chain that
gets called very frequently should be atomic, because the rwsem read-locking
used for blocking chains is very likely to incur cache misses on SMP systems.
(However, if the chain's callout routines may sleep then the chain cannot be
atomic.)

The patch set was written by Alan Stern and Chandra Seetharaman, incorporating
material written by Keith Owens and suggestions from Paul McKenney and Andrew
Morton.

Eric Dumazet 5160ee6fc8 [PATCH] shrink dentry struct
Some long time ago, dentry struct was carefully tuned so that on 32 bits
UP, sizeof(struct dentry) was exactly 128, ie a power of 2, and a multiple
of memory cache lines.

Then RCU was added and dentry struct enlarged by two pointers, with nice
results for SMP, but not so good on UP, because breaking the above tuning
(128 + 8 = 136 bytes)

This patch reverts this unwanted side effect, by using an union (d_u),
where d_rcu and d_child are placed so that these two fields can share their
memory needs.

At the time d_free() is called (and d_rcu is really used), d_child is known
to be empty and not touched by the dentry freeing.

Lockless lookups only access d_name, d_parent, d_lock, d_op, d_flags (so
the previous content of d_child is not needed if said dentry was unhashed
but still accessed by a CPU because of RCU constraints)

As dentry cache easily contains millions of entries, a size reduction is
worth the extra complexity of the ugly C union.

Pete Zaitcev aafbf24a11 [PATCH] USB: replace __setup("nousb") with __module_param_call
Fedora users complain that passing "nousbstorage" to the installer causes
the rest of the USB support to disappear. The installer uses kernel command
line as a way to pass options through Syslinux. The problem stems from the
use of strncmp() in obsolete_checksetup().

I used __module_param_call() instead of module_param because I wanted to
preserve the old syntax in grub.conf, and it's the only macro which allows
to remove the prefix.

Alan Stern 55c527187c [PATCH] USB: Consider power budget when choosing configuration
This patch (as609) changes the way we keep track of power budgeting for
USB hubs and devices, and it updates the choose_configuration routine to
take this information into account. (This is something we should have
been doing all along.) A new field in struct usb_device holds the amount
of bus current available from the upstream port, and the usb_hub structure
keeps track of the current available for each downstream port.

Two new rules for configuration selection are added:

Don't select a self-powered configuration when only bus power
	is available.

Don't select a configuration requiring more bus power than is
	available.

However the first rule is #if-ed out, because I found that the internal
hub in my HP USB keyboard claims that its only configuration is
self-powered. The rule would prevent the configuration from being chosen,
leaving the hub & keyboard unconfigured. Since similar descriptor errors
may turn out to be fairly common, it seemed wise not to include a rule
that would break automatic configuration unnecessarily for such devices.

The second rule may also trigger unnecessarily, although this should be
less common. More likely it will annoy people by sometimes failing to
accept configurations that should never have been chosen in the first
place.

The patch also changes usbcore's reaction when no configuration is
suitable. Instead of raising an error and rejecting the device, now
the core will simply leave the device unconfigured. People can always
work around such problems by installing configurations manually through
sysfs.

Alan Stern 7d069b7d80 [PATCH] USB: Disconnect children during hub unbind
This patch (as606b) is an updated version of my earlier patch to
disconnect children from a hub device when the hub driver is unbound.
Thanks to the changes in the driver core locking, we now know that the
entire hub device (and not just the interface) is locked whenever the
hub driver's disconnect method runs. Hence it is safe to disconnect the
child device structures immediately instead of deferring the job.

The earlier version of the patch neglected to disable the hub's ports.
We don't want to forget that; otherwise we'd end up with live devices
using addresses that have been recycled. This update adds the necessary
code.

Alan Stern 9ad3d6ccf5 [PATCH] USB: Remove USB private semaphore
This patch (as605) removes the private udev->serialize semaphore,
relying instead on the locking provided by the embedded struct device's
semaphore. The changes are confined to the core, except that the
usb_trylock_device routine now uses the return convention of
down_trylock rather than down_read_trylock (they return opposite values
for no good reason).

A couple of other associated changes are included as well:

Now that we aren't concerned about HCDs that avoid using the
hcd glue layer, usb_disconnect no longer needs to acquire the
usb_bus_lock -- that can be done by usb_remove_hcd where it
	belongs.

Devices aren't locked over the same scope of code in
usb_new_device and hub_port_connect_change as they used to be.
	This shouldn't cause any trouble.

Along with the preceding driver core patch, this needs a lot of testing.

Benjamin Herrenschmidt 8de9840265 [PATCH] USB: Fix USB suspend/resume crasher (#2)
This patch closes the IRQ race and makes various other OHCI & EHCI code
path safer vs. suspend/resume.
I've been able to (finally !) successfully suspend and resume various
Mac models, with or without USB mouse plugged, or plugging while asleep,
or unplugging while asleep etc... all without a crash.

Alan, please verify the UHCI bit I did, I only verified that it builds.
It's very simple so I wouldn't expect any issue there. If you aren't
confident, then just drop the hunks that change uhci-hcd.c

I also made the patch a little bit more "safer" by making sure the store
to the interrupt register that disables interrupts is not posted before
I set the flag and drop the spinlock.

Without this patch, you cannot reliably sleep/wakeup any recent Mac, and
I suspect PCs have some more sneaky issues too (they don't frankly crash
with machine checks because x86 tend to silently swallow PCI errors but
that won't last afaik, at least PCI Express will blow up in those
situations, but the USB code may still misbehave).

few releases (as usbcore, PCI, pmcore, and other components evolved):

  - Removes suspend and resume recursion from the EHCI driver, getting

  - Updates the wakeup mechanism to work again; there's a newish usbcore
    call it needs to use.

  - Provide simpler tests for "do we need to restart from scratch", to
address another case where PCI Vaux was lost. (In this case it was
restoring a swsusp snapshot, but there could be others.)

Un-exports a symbol that was temporarily exported.

Alan Stern 0c0382e32d [PATCH] USB: Rename hcd->hub_suspend to hcd->bus_suspend
This patch (as580) is perhaps the only result from the long discussion I
had with David about his changes to the root-hub suspend/resume code. It
renames the hub_suspend and hub_resume methods in struct usb_hcd to
bus_suspend and bus_resume. These are more descriptive names, since the
methods really do suspend or resume an entire USB bus, and less likely to
be confused with the hub_suspend and hub_resume routines in hub.c.

It also takes David's advice about removing the layer of bus glue, where
those methods are called. And it implements a related change that David
made to the other HCDs but forgot to put into dummy_hcd.

Alan Stern d09d36a91c [PATCH] USB: usb_bulk_message() handles interrupts endpoints
Because there is no bulk_interrupt_message() routine and no
USBDEVFS_INTERRUPT ioctl, people have been forced to abuse the
usb_bulk_message() routine and USBDEVFS_BULK by using them for interrupt
transfers as well as bulk transfers.

This patch (as567) formalizes this practice and adds code to
usb_bulk_message() for detecting when the target is really an interrupt
endpoint. If it is, the routine submits an interrupt URB (using the
default interval) instead of a bulk URB. In theory this should help HCDs
that don't like it when people try to mix transfer types, queuing both
periodic and non-periodic types for the same endpoint.

Not fully tested -- I don't have any programs that use USBDEVFS_BULK for
interrupt transfers -- but it compiles okay and normal bulk messages work
as well as before.

  - Removes now-unneeded recursion support

  - Go back to ignoring faults reported by the wakeup calls; we expect them

David Brownell f3f3253d64 [PATCH] root hub updates (greater half)
This patch associates hub suspend and resume logic (including for root hubs)
with CONFIG_PM -- instead of CONFIG_USB_SUSPEND as before -- thereby unifying
two troublesome versions of suspend logic into just one. It'll be easier to
keep things right from now on.

  - Now usbcore _always_ calls hcd->hub_suspend as needed, instead of
    only when USB_SUSPEND is enabled:
     * Those root hub methods are now called from hub suspend/resume;
       no more skipping between layers during device suspend/resume;
     * It now handles cases allowed by sysfs or autosuspended root hubs,
by forcing the hub interface to resume too.

  - All devices, including virtual root hubs, now get the same treatment
on their resume paths ... including re-activating all their interfaces.

Plus it gets rid of those stub copies of usb_{suspend,resume}_device(), and
updates the Kconfig to match the new definition of USB_SUSPEND: it provides
(a) selective suspend, downstream from hubs; and (b) remote wakeup, upstream
from any device configuration which supports it.

This calls for minor followup patches for most HCDs (and their PCI glue).

David Brownell 979d5199fe [PATCH] root hub changes (lesser half)
This patch collects various small updates related to root hubs, to shrink
later patches which build on them.

  - For root hub suspend/resume support:
     * Make the existing usb_hcd_resume_root_hub() routine respect pmcore
locking, exporting and using the dpm_runtime_resume() method.
     * Add a new usb_hcd_suspend_root_hub() to pair with that routine.
(Essential to make OHCI autosuspend behave again...)
     * HC_SUSPENDED by itself only refers to the root hub's downstream ports.
So let HCDs see root hub URBs unless the parent device is suspended.

  - Remove an assertion we no longer need (and now, also don't want).

  - Generic suspend/resume updates to work better with swsusp.
     * Ignore the FREEZE vs SUSPEND distinction for hardware; trying to
use it breaks the swsusp snapshots it's supposed to help (sigh).
     * On resume, mark devices as resumed right away, but then
do nothing else if the device is marked NOTATTACHED.

These changes shouldn't be very noticable by themselves.

David Brownell 390a8c345e [PATCH] remove usb_suspend_device() parameter
This patch removes the extra usb_suspend_device() parameter. The original
reason to pass that parameter was so that this routine could suspend any
active children. A previous patch removed that functionality ... leaving
no reason to pass the parameter. A close analogy is pci_set_power_state,
which doesn't need a pm_message_t either.

On the internal code path that comes through the driver model, the parameter
is now used to distinguish cases where USB devices need to "freeze" but not
suspend. It also checks for an error case that's accessible through sysfs:
attempting to suspend a device before its interfaces (or for hubs, ports).

David Brownell c9f89fa40c [PATCH] remove suspend-path recursion
This patch removes some recursion in the CONFIG_USB_SUSPEND logic, which
suspended children (of devices or hubs) that weren't already suspended.
When it sees such cases, suspend now just fails cleanly.

That logic was not needed during system-wide sleep state transitions; and
given the current notions of how to manage selective suspend transitions,
we don't want it there either. Where it was particularly handy was coping
with various limitations of the sysfs "echo -n N > power/state" support.
(These include assuming that "N" is always meaningful to the driver; and
that drivers can only transition to state N from state zero.)

David Brownell db69087437 [PATCH] usb_interface power state
This updates the handling of power state for USB interfaces.

  - Formalizes an existing invariant: interface "power state" is a boolean:
ON when I/O is allowed, and FREEZE otherwise. It does so by defining
some inlined helpers, then using them.

  - Adds a useful invariant: the only interfaces marked active are those
bound to non-suspended drivers. Later patches build on this invariant.

  - Simplifies the interface driver API (and removes some error paths) by
removing the requirement that they record power state changes during
suspend and resume callbacks. Now usbcore does that.

A few drivers were simplified to address that last change.

Harald Welte 46113830a1 [PATCH] Fix signal sending in usbdevio on async URB completion
If a process issues an URB from userspace and (starts to) terminate
before the URB comes back, we run into the issue described above. This
is because the urb saves a pointer to "current" when it is posted to the
device, but there's no guarantee that this pointer is still valid
afterwards.

In fact, there are three separate issues:

1) the pointer to "current" can become invalid, since the task could be
completely gone when the URB completion comes back from the device.

2) Even if the saved task pointer is still pointing to a valid task_struct,
   task_struct->sighand could have gone meanwhile.

3) Even if the process is perfectly fine, permissions may have changed,
and we can no longer send it a signal.

So what we do instead, is to save the PID and uid's of the process, and
introduce a new kill_proc_info_as_uid() function.

Routine cases like handoff-to-companion shouldn't trigger diagnostics.

Alan Stern 3b4d7f7916 [PATCH] USB: Support unbinding of the usb_generic driver
This patch (as556) adds support for unbinding the usb_generic "driver".
That driver only binds to USB devices, as opposed to interfaces, and it
does nothing much besides marking which struct device's go with an
overall USB device plus providing suspend/resume methods. Now that
users can unbind drivers at will using the sysfs "unbind" attribute, we
need a rational way of dealing with USB devices that are no longer under
full control of the USB stack. The patch handles this by unconfiguring
the device, thereby removing all the interfaces and their associated
drivers and children.

This patch (as554) makes the hub driver disconnect any child USB devices

Alan Stern b375a0495f [PATCH] USB: URB_ASYNC_UNLINK flag removed from the kernel
29 July 2005, Cambridge, MA:

This afternoon Alan Stern submitted a patch to remove the URB_ASYNC_UNLINK
flag from the Linux kernel. Mr. Stern explained, "This flag is a relic
from an earlier, less-well-designed system. For over a year it hasn't
been used for anything other than printing warning messages."

An anonymous spokesman for the Linux kernel development community
commented, "This is exactly the sort of thing we see happening all the
time. As the kernel evolves, support for old techniques and old code can
be jettisoned and replaced by newer, better approaches. Proprietary
operating systems do not have the freedom or flexibility to change so
quickly."

Mr. Stern, a staff member at Harvard University's Rowland Institute who
works on Linux only as a hobby, noted that the patch (labelled as548) did
not update two files, keyspan.c and option.c, in the USB drivers' "serial"
subdirectory. "Those files need more extensive changes," he remarked.
"They examine the status field of several URBs at times when they're not
supposed to. That will need to be fixed before the URB_ASYNC_UNLINK flag
is removed."

Greg Kroah-Hartman, the kernel maintainer responsible for overseeing all
of Linux's USB drivers, did not respond to our inquiries or return our
calls. His only comment was "Applied, thanks."

Kay Sievers fbf82fd2e1 [PATCH] USB: real nodes instead of usbfs
This patch introduces a /sys/class/usb_device/ class
where every connected usb-device will show up:

  tree /sys/class/usb_device/
  /sys/class/usb_device/
  |-- usb1.1
  | |-- dev
  |   `-- device -> ../../../devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1d.0/usb1
  |-- usb2.1
  | |-- dev
  |   `-- device -> ../../../devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1d.1/usb2
  ...

The presence of the "dev" file lets udev create real device nodes.
  kay@pim:~/src/linux-2.6> tree /dev/bus/usb/
  /dev/bus/usb/
  |-- 1
  | `-- 1
  |-- 2
  | `-- 1
  ...

udev rule:
  SUBSYSTEM="usb_device", PROGRAM="/sbin/usb_device %k", NAME="%c"
  (echo $1 | /bin/sed 's/usb\([0-9]*\)\.\([0-9]*\)/bus\/usb\/\1\/\2/')

This makes libusb pick up the real nodes instead of the mounted usbfs:
  export USB_DEVFS_PATH=/dev/bus/usb

Background:
All this makes it possible to manage usb devices with udev instead of
the devfs solution. We are currently working on a pam_console/resmgr
replacement driven by udev and a pam-helper. It applies ACL's to device
nodes, which is required for modern desktop functionalty like
"Fast User Switching" or multiple local login support.

New patch with its own major. I've succesfully disabled usbfs and use real
nodes only on my box. With: "export USB_DEVFS_PATH=/dev/bus/usb" libusb picks
up the udev managed nodes instead of reading usbfs files.

This makes udev to provide symlinks for libusb to pick up:
  SUBSYSTEM="usb_device", PROGRAM="/sbin/usbdevice %k", SYMLINK="%c"

/sbin/usbdevice:
  #!/bin/sh
  echo $1 | /bin/sed 's/usbdev\([0-9]*\)\.\([0-9]*\)/bus\/usb\/\1\/\2/'

This patch handles a rarely-encountered failure mode in usbcore. It's
legal for device_add to fail (although now it happens even more rarely
than before since failure to bind a driver is no longer fatal). So when
we destroy the interfaces in a configuration, we shouldn't try to delete

Alan Stern d5926ae7a8 [PATCH] usbcore support for root-hub IRQ instead of polling
This is a revised version of an earlier patch to add support to usbcore
for driving root hubs by interrupts rather than polling.

There's a temporary flag added to struct usb_hcd, marking devices whose
drivers are aware of the new mechanism. By default that flag doesn't get
set so drivers will continue to see the same polling behavior as before.
This way we can convert the HCDs one by one to use interrupt-based event
reporting, and the temporary flag can be removed when they're all done.

Also included is a small change to the hcd_disable_endpoint routine.
Although endpoints normally shouldn't be disabled while a controller is
suspended, it's legal to do so when the controller's driver is being
rmmod'ed.

Lastly the patch adds a new callback, .hub_irq_enable, for use by HCDs
where the root hub's port-change interrupts are level-triggered rather
than edge-triggered. The callback is invoked each time khubd has finished
processing a root hub, to let the HCD know that the interrupt can safely
be re-enabled.

Patrick Mochel 273971bade [PATCH] usb: klist_node_attached() fix
The original code looks like this:

/* if interface was already added, bind now; else let
         * the future device_add() bind it, bypassing probe()
         */
        if (!list_empty (&dev->bus_list))
                device_bind_driver(dev);

IOW, it's checking to see if the device is attached to the bus or not
and binding the driver if it is. It's checking the device's bus list,
which will only appear empty when the device has been initialized, but
not added. It depends way too much on the driver model internals, but it
seems to be the only way to do the weird crap they want to do with
interfaces.

When I converted it to use klists, I accidentally inverted the logic,
which led to bad things happening. This patch returns the check to its
orginal value.

Alan Stern 8835f66573 [PATCH] USB: USB API documentation modification
In response to complaints about excessive latency in the uhci-hcd driver
I'm planning to convert it to a top-half/bottom-half design. It turns out
that to do this, the USB API has to be modified slightly since the driver
will not be able to meet one of the guarantees in the current API. This
patch changes some kerneldoc, specifying the weaker guarantee.

I am sorry that the last patch about 32 bit compat ioctl on

in both 32bit compatible mode and native 64bit mode.

David Brownell a81e7ecca3 [PATCH] USB: revert "fix" to usb_set_interface()
This reverts a recent change to usb_set_interface(). The change worked
around a quirk in certain devices, but doing this in usbcore creates
needless regressions for other devices. More appropriate fixes won't
put such handling in usbcore.

Basically it's tricky to do a full software reset of USB device state, since
the devices don't all act the same. This adds a note to the kerneldoc for
the usb_reset_configuration() call to highlight the quirk this was working
around: endpoint data toggles not being reset.

David Brownell 9a5d3e98dd [PATCH] USB: hcd suspend uses pm_message_t
This patch includes minor "sparse -Wbitwise" updates for the PCI based
HCDs. Almost all of them involve just changing the second parameter of the
suspend() method to a pm_message_t ... the others relate to how the EHCI
code walks in-memory data structures. (There's a minor bug fixed there too
... affecting the big-endian sysfs async schedule dump.)

David Brownell 27d72e8572 [PATCH] usb suspend updates (interface suspend)
This is the first of a few installments of PM API updates to match the
recent switch to "pm_message_t". This installment primarily affects
USB device drivers (for USB interfaces), and it changes the handful of
drivers which currently implement suspend methods:

    - <linux/usb.h> and usbcore, signature change

    - Some drivers only changed the signature, net effect this just
      shuts up "sparse -Wbitwise":
	* hid-core
	* stir4200

    - Two network drivers did that, and also grew slightly more
featureful suspend code ... they now properly shut down
      their activities. (As should stir4200...)
	* pegasus
	* usbnet

Note that the Wake-On-Lan (WOL) support in pegasus doesn't yet work; looks
to me like it's missing a request to turn it on, vs just configuring it.
The ASIX code in usbnet also has WOL hooks that are ready to use; untested.

David Brownell c6053ecffb [PATCH] usb resume fixes
This has a variety of updates to the shared suspend/resume code for
PCI based USB host controllers.

    - Cope with pm_message_t replacing the target system state.
This is actually a loss of functionality; PCI D1 and D2
states will no longer be used, and it's no longer knowable
that D3cold is on the way so power will be lost.

    - Most importantly, some of the resume paths are reworked and
cleaned up. They're now an exact mirror of suspend paths,
and more care is taken to ensure the hardware is reactivated
      before the hardware re-enables interrupts.

Plus comment and diagnostic cleanups; there are some nasty cases here
especially combined with swsusp, now they're somewhat commented.

Linus Torvalds 1da177e4c3 Linux-2.6.12-rc2
Initial git repository build. I'm not bothering with the full history,
even though we have it. We can create a separate "historical" git
archive of that later if we want to, and in the meantime it's about
3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early
git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good
infrastructure for it.

Let it rip!
