Ian Rogers 930e16ac95 perf tools: Add/use PMU reverse lookup from config to name
[ Upstream commit 67ee8e71daabb8632931b7559e5c8a4b69a427f8 ]

Add perf_pmu__name_from_config that does a reverse lookup from a
config number to an alias name. The lookup is expensive as the config
is computed for every alias by filling in a perf_event_attr, but this
is only done when verbose output is enabled. The lookup also only
considers config, and not config1, config2 or config3.

An example of the output:

  $ perf stat -vv -e data_read true
  ...
  perf_event_attr:
    type 24 (uncore_imc_free_running_0)
    size 136
    config 0x20ff (data_read)
    sample_type IDENTIFIER
    read_format TOTAL_TIME_ENABLED|TOTAL_TIME_RUNNING
    disabled 1
    inherit 1
    exclude_guest 1
  ...

Committer notes:

Fix the python binding build by adding dummies for not strictly
needed perf_pmu__name_from_config() and perf_pmus__find_by_type().

Ian Rogers 923b83bc86 perf tools: Use pmus to describe type from attribute
[ Upstream commit 7093882067e2e2f88d3449c35c5f0f3f566c8a26 ]

When dumping a perf_event_attr, use pmus to find the PMU and its name
by the type number. This allows dynamically added PMUs to be described.

Before:

  $ perf stat -vv -e data_read true
  ...
  perf_event_attr:
    type 24
    size 136
    config 0x20ff
    sample_type IDENTIFIER
    read_format TOTAL_TIME_ENABLED|TOTAL_TIME_RUNNING
    disabled 1
    inherit 1
    exclude_guest 1
  ...

After:

  $ perf stat -vv -e data_read true
  ...
  perf_event_attr:
    type 24 (uncore_imc_free_running_0)
    size 136
    config 0x20ff
    sample_type IDENTIFIER
    read_format TOTAL_TIME_ENABLED|TOTAL_TIME_RUNNING
    disabled 1
    inherit 1
    exclude_guest 1
  ...

However, it also means that when we have a PMU name we prefer it to a
hard coded name:

Before:

$ perf stat -vv -e faults true
  ...
  perf_event_attr:
    type 1 (PERF_TYPE_SOFTWARE)
    size 136
    config 0x2 (PERF_COUNT_SW_PAGE_FAULTS)
    sample_type IDENTIFIER
    read_format TOTAL_TIME_ENABLED|TOTAL_TIME_RUNNING
    disabled 1
    inherit 1
    enable_on_exec 1
    exclude_guest 1
  ...

After:

$ perf stat -vv -e faults true
  ...
  perf_event_attr:
    type 1 (software)
    size 136
    config 0x2 (PERF_COUNT_SW_PAGE_FAULTS)
    sample_type IDENTIFIER
    read_format TOTAL_TIME_ENABLED|TOTAL_TIME_RUNNING
    disabled 1
    inherit 1
    enable_on_exec 1
    exclude_guest 1
  ...

It feels more consistent to do this, rather than only prefer a PMU
name when a hard coded name isn't available.

When printing attr, members whose value is 0 will not be printed, we want
to print the case where attr->type is 0(PERF_TYPE_HARDWARE), add `_a`
param to PRINT_ATTRf macro to always print member when it is true

This updates the perf tools with branch privilege information request flag
i.e PERF_SAMPLE_BRANCH_PRIV_SAVE that has been added earlier in the kernel.
This also updates 'perf record' documentation, branch_modes[], and generic
branch privilege level enumeration as added earlier in the kernel.

Kan Liang ea8d0ed6ea perf tools: Support PERF_SAMPLE_WEIGHT_STRUCT
The new sample type, PERF_SAMPLE_WEIGHT_STRUCT, is an alternative of the
PERF_SAMPLE_WEIGHT sample type. Users can apply either the
PERF_SAMPLE_WEIGHT sample type or the PERF_SAMPLE_WEIGHT_STRUCT sample
type to retrieve the sample weight, but they cannot apply both sample
types simultaneously.

The new sample type shares the same space as the PERF_SAMPLE_WEIGHT
sample type. The lower 32 bits are exactly the same for both sample
type. The higher 32 bits may be different for different architecture.

Add arch specific arch_evsel__set_sample_weight() to set the new sample
type for X86. Only store the lower 32 bits for the sample->weight if the
new sample type is applied. In practice, no memory access could last
than 4G cycles. No data will be lost.

If the kernel doesn't support the new sample type. Fall back to the
PERF_SAMPLE_WEIGHT sample type.

There is no impact for other architectures.

Committer notes:

Fixup related to PERF_SAMPLE_CODE_PAGE_SIZE, present in acme/perf/core
but not upstream yet.

Jiri Olsa e29386c8f7 perf record: Add --buildid-mmap option to enable PERF_RECORD_MMAP2's build id
Add --buildid-mmap option to enable build id in PERF_RECORD_MMAP2 events.

It will only work if there's kernel support for that and it disables
build id cache (implies --no-buildid).

It's also possible to enable it permanently via config option in
~/.perfconfig file:

  [record]
  build-id=mmap

Also added build_id bit in the verbose output for perf_event_attr:

  # perf record --buildid-mmap -vv
  ...
  perf_event_attr:
    type 1
    size 120
    ...
    build_id 1

Adding also missing text_poke bit.

Committer testing:

  $ perf record -h build

   Usage: perf record [<options>] [<command>]
      or: perf record [<options>] -- <command> [<options>]

-B, --no-buildid do not collect buildids in perf.data
      -N, --no-buildid-cache
do not update the buildid cache
--buildid-all Record build-id of all DSOs regardless of hits
--buildid-mmap Record build-id in map events

  $

  $ perf record --buildid-mmap sleep 1
Failed: no support to record build id in mmap events, update your kernel.

After adding the needed kernel bits in a test kernel:

  $ perf record -vv --buildid-mmap sleep 1 |& grep -m1 build

Kan Liang d3f85437ad perf evsel: Support PERF_SAMPLE_BRANCH_HW_INDEX
A new branch sample type PERF_SAMPLE_BRANCH_HW_INDEX has been introduced
in latest kernel.

Enable HW_INDEX by default in LBR call stack mode.

If kernel doesn't support the sample type, switching it off.

Add HW_INDEX in attr_fprintf as well. User can check whether the branch
sample type is set via debug information or header.

Committer testing:

First collect some samples with LBR callchains, system wide, for a few
seconds:

  # perf record --call-graph lbr -a sleep 5
[ perf record: Woken up 1 times to write data ]
  [ perf record: Captured and wrote 0.625 MB perf.data (224 samples) ]
  #

Now lets use 'perf evlist -v' to look at the branch_sample_type:

  # perf evlist -v
  cycles: size: 120, { sample_period, sample_freq }: 4000, sample_type: IP|TID|TIME|CALLCHAIN|CPU|PERIOD|BRANCH_STACK, read_format: ID, disabled: 1, inherit: 1, mmap: 1, comm: 1, freq: 1, task: 1, precise_ip: 3, sample_id_all: 1, exclude_guest: 1, mmap2: 1, comm_exec: 1, ksymbol: 1, bpf_event: 1, branch_sample_type: USER|CALL_STACK|NO_FLAGS|NO_CYCLES|HW_INDEX
  #

So the machine has the kernel feature, and it was correctly added to
perf_event_attr.branch_sample_type, for the default 'cycles' event.

If we do it in another machine, where the kernel lacks the HW_INDEX
feature, we get:

  # perf record --call-graph lbr -a sleep 2s
[ perf record: Woken up 1 times to write data ]
  [ perf record: Captured and wrote 1.690 MB perf.data (499 samples) ]
  # perf evlist -v
  cycles: size: 120, { sample_period, sample_freq }: 4000, sample_type: IP|TID|TIME|CALLCHAIN|CPU|PERIOD|BRANCH_STACK, read_format: ID, disabled: 1, inherit: 1, mmap: 1, comm: 1, freq: 1, task: 1, precise_ip: 3, sample_id_all: 1, exclude_guest: 1, mmap2: 1, comm_exec: 1, ksymbol: 1, bpf_event: 1, branch_sample_type: USER|CALL_STACK|NO_FLAGS|NO_CYCLES
  #

No HW_INDEX in attr.branch_sample_type.

Adrian Hunter 98dcf14d7f perf tools: Add kernel AUX area sampling definitions
Add kernel AUX area sampling definitions, which brings perf_event.h into
line with the kernel version.

New sample type PERF_SAMPLE_AUX requests a sample of the AUX area
buffer. New perf_event_attr member 'aux_sample_size' specifies the
desired size of the sample.

Also add support for parsing samples containing AUX area data i.e.
PERF_SAMPLE_AUX.

Committer notes:

I squashed the first two patches in this series to avoid breaking
automatic bisection, i.e. after applying only the original first patch
in this series we would have:

  # perf test -v parsing
  26: Sample parsing :
  --- start ---
  test child forked, pid 17018
sample format has changed, some new PERF_SAMPLE_ bit was introduced - test needs updating
  test child finished with -1
  ---- end ----
  Sample parsing: FAILED!
  #

With the two paches combined:

  # perf test parsing
  26: Sample parsing : Ok

and not drag symbol_conf, etc into the python binding.
