I found a few too many things that are tricky and not documented, so I
started typing.
I found a few more things that looked broken while typing, see the
varios FIXME in drm_sched_entity.
Also some of the usual logics:
- actually include sched_entity.c declarations, that was lost in the
move here: 620e762f9a ("drm/scheduler: move entity handling into
separate file")
- Ditch the kerneldoc for internal functions, keep the comments where
they're describing more than what the function name already implies.
- Switch drm_sched_entity to inline docs.

We still have quite a bit more work to do with overall reworking of
the ttm-based dg1 code, but the uapi stuff is now finalized with the
latest pull. So remove that.
This also fixes kerneldoc build warnings because we've included the
same headers in two places, resulting in sphinx complaining about
duplicated symbols. This regression has been created when we moved the
uapi definitions to the real include/uapi/ folder in 727ecd99a4

UAPI Changes:
- Add I915_MMAP_OFFSET_FIXED
On devices with local memory `I915_MMAP_OFFSET_FIXED` is the only valid
type. On devices without local memory, this caching mode is invalid.
As caching mode when specifying `I915_MMAP_OFFSET_FIXED`, WC or WB will
be used, depending on the object placement on creation. WB will be used
when the object can only exist in system memory, WC otherwise.
Userspace: https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/mesa/mesa/-/merge_requests/11888
- Reinstate the mmap ioctl for (already released) integrated Gen12 platforms
Rationale: Otherwise media driver breaks eg. for ADL-P. Long term goal is
still to sunset the IOCTL even for integrated and require using mmap_offset.
- Reject caching/set_domain IOCTLs on discrete
Expected to become immutable property of the BO
- Disallow changing context parameters after first use on Gen12 and earlier
- Require setting context parameters at creation on platforms after Gen12
Rationale (for both): Allow less dynamic changes to the context to simplify
the implementation and avoid user shooting theirselves in the foot.
- Drop I915_CONTEXT_PARAM_RINGSIZE
Userspace PR for compute-driver has not been merged
- Drop I915_CONTEXT_PARAM_NO_ZEROMAP
Userspace PR for libdrm / Beignet was never landed
- Drop CONTEXT_CLONE API
Userspace PR for Mesa was never landed
- Drop getparam support for I915_CONTEXT_PARAM_ENGINES
Only existed for symmetry wrt. setparam, never used.
- Disallow bonding of virtual engines
Drop the prep work, no hardware has been released needing it.
- (Implicit) Disable gpu relocations
Media userspace was the last userspace to still use them. They
have converted so performance can be regained with an update.

We make the following changes to the documentation of drm leases to
make it easier to reason about their usage. In particular, we clarify
the lifetime and locking rules of lease fields in drm_master:
1. Make it clear that &drm_device.mode_config.idr_mutex protects the
lease idr and list structures for drm_master. The lessor field itself
doesn't need to be protected as it doesn't change after it's set in
drm_lease_create.
2. Add descriptions for the lifetime of lessors and leases.
3. Add an overview DOC: section in drm-uapi.rst that defines the
terminology for drm leasing, and explains how leases work and why
they're used.

Introduce i915_sched_engine object which is lower level data structure
that i915_scheduler / generic code can operate on without touching
execlist specific structures. This allows additional submission backends
to be added without breaking the layering. Currently the execlists
backend uses 1 of these object per each engine (physical or virtual) but
future backends like the GuC will point to less instances utilizing the
reference counting.
This is a bit of detour to integrating the i915 with the DRM scheduler
but this object will still exist when the DRM scheduler lands in the
i915. It will however look a bit different. It will encapsulate the
drm_gpu_scheduler object plus and common variables (to the backends)
related to scheduling. Regardless this is a step in the right direction.
This patch starts the aforementioned transition by moving the priolist
into the i915_sched_engine object.

Reading out of write-combining mapped memory is typically very slow
since the CPU doesn't prefetch. However some archs have special
instructions to do this.
So add a best-effort memcpy_from_wc taking dma-buf-map pointer
arguments that attempts to use a fast prefetching memcpy and
otherwise falls back to ordinary memcopies, taking the iomem tagging
into account.
The code is largely copied from i915_memcpy_from_wc.

Platform devices might operate on firmware framebuffers, such as VESA
or EFI. Before a native driver for the graphics hardware can take over
the device, it has to remove any platform driver that operates on the
firmware framebuffer. Aperture helpers provide the infrastructure for
native drivers to remove the generic ones.
For now, this only concerns generic fbdev drivers. Code for removing
these is provided by drm_fb_helper_remove_conflicting_framebuffers() et
al. Simply wrap these functions for now. At a later point, code can be
added for generic DRM drivers to acquire firmware framebuffers.

USB devices cannot perform DMA and hence have no dma_mask set in their
device structure. Therefore importing dmabuf into a USB-based driver
fails, which breaks joining and mirroring of display in X11.
For USB devices, pick the associated USB controller as attachment device.
This allows the DRM import helpers to perform the DMA setup. If the DMA
controller does not support DMA transfers, we're out of luck and cannot
import. Our current USB-based DRM drivers don't use DMA, so the actual
DMA device is not important.

Only planes' prepare_fb and cleanup_fb, and encoders' atomic_check and
atomic_mode_set hooks remain with an object state and not the global
drm_atomic_state.
prepare_fb and cleanup_fb operate by design on a given state and
depending on the calling site can operate on either the old or new
state, so it doesn't really make much sense to convert them.
The encoders' atomic_check and atomic_mode_set operate on the CRTC and
connector state connected to them since encoders don't have a state of
their own. Without those state pointers, we would need to get the CRTC
through the drm_connector_state crtc pointer.
However, in order to get the drm_connector_state pointer, we would need
to get the connector itself and while usually we have a single connector
connected to the encoder, we can't really get it from the encoder at
the moment since it could be behind any number of bridges.
While this could be addressed by (for example) listing all the
connectors and finding the one that has the encoder as its source, it
feels like an unnecessary rework for something that is slowly getting
replaced by bridges.
Since all the users that matter have been converted, let's remove the
TODO item.

- As promised, the minimum Sphinx version to build the docs is now 1.7,
and we have dropped support for Python 2 entirely. That allowed the
removal of a bunch of compatibility code.
- A set of treewide warning fixups from Mauro that I applied after it
became clear nobody else was going to deal with them.
- The automarkup mechanism can now create cross-references from relative
paths to RST files.
- More translations, typo fixes, and warning fixes.
No conflicts with any other tree as far as I know.

Signed-off-by: Maarten Lankhorst <maarten.lankhorst@linux.intel.com>
Several drivers use GEM buffer objects as shadow buffers for the actual
framebuffer memory. Right now, drivers do these vmap operations in their
commit tail, which is actually not allowed by the locking rules for
the dma-buf reservation lock. The involved BO has to be vmapped in the
plane's prepare_fb callback and vunmapped in cleanup_fb.
This patch introduces atomic helpers for such shadow planes. Plane
functions manage the plane state for shadow planes. The provided
implementations for prepare_fb and cleanup_fb vmap and vunmap all BOs of
struct drm_plane_state.fb. The mappings are afterwards available in the
plane's commit-tail functions.
For now, all rsp drivers use the simple KMS helpers, so we add the plane
callbacks and wrappers for simple KMS. The internal plane functions can
later be exported as needed.

So ever since syzbot discovered fbcon, we have solid proof that it's
full of bugs. And often the solution is to just delete code and remove
features, e.g. 50145474f6 ("fbcon: remove soft scrollback code").
Now the problem is that most modern-ish drivers really only treat
fbcon as an dumb kernel console until userspace takes over, and Oops
printer for some emergencies. Looking at drm drivers and the basic
vesa/efi fbdev drivers shows that only 3 drivers support any kind of
acceleration:
- nouveau, seems to be enabled by default
- omapdrm, when a DMM remapper exists using remapper rewriting for
y/xpanning
- gma500, but that is getting deleted now for the GTT remapper trick,
and the accelerated copyarea never set the FBINFO_HWACCEL_COPYAREA
flag, so unused (and could be deleted already I think).
No other driver supportes accelerated fbcon. And fbcon is the only
user of this accel code (it's not exposed as uapi through ioctls),
which means we could garbage collect fairly enormous amounts of code
if we kill this.
Plus because syzbot only runs on virtual hardware, and none of the
drivers for that have acceleration, we'd remove a huge gap in testing.
And there's no other even remotely comprehensive testing aside from
syzbot.
This patch here just disables the acceleration code by always
redrawing when scrolling. The plan is that once this has been merged
for well over a year in released kernels, we can start to go around
and delete a lot of code.

At least sparc64 requires I/O-specific access to framebuffers. This
patch updates the fbdev console accordingly.
For drivers with direct access to the framebuffer memory, the callback
functions in struct fb_ops test for the type of memory and call the rsp
fb_sys_ of fb_cfb_ functions. Read and write operations are implemented
internally by DRM's fbdev helper.
For drivers that employ a shadow buffer, fbdev's blit function retrieves
the framebuffer address as struct dma_buf_map, and uses dma_buf_map
interfaces to access the buffer.
The bochs driver on sparc64 uses a workaround to flag the framebuffer as
I/O memory and avoid a HW exception. With the introduction of struct
dma_buf_map, this is not required any longer. The patch removes the rsp
code from both, bochs and fbdev.
v7:
* use min_t(size_t,) (kernel test robot)
* return the number of bytes read/written, if any (fbdev testcase)
v5:
* implement fb_read/fb_write internally (Daniel, Sam)
v4:
* move dma_buf_map changes into separate patch (Daniel)

This patch replaces the vmap/vunmap's use of raw pointers in GEM object
functions with instances of struct dma_buf_map. GEM backends are
converted as well. For most of them, this simply changes the returned type.
TTM-based drivers now return information about the location of the memory,
either system or I/O memory. GEM VRAM helpers and qxl now use ttm_bo_vmap()
et al. Amdgpu, nouveau and radeon use drm_gem_ttm_vmap() et al instead of
implementing their own vmap callbacks.
v7:
* init QXL cursor to mapped BO buffer (kernel test robot)
v5:
* update vkms after switch to shmem
v4:
* use ttm_bo_vmap(), drm_gem_ttm_vmap(), et al. (Daniel, Christian)
* fix a trailing { in drm_gem_vmap()
* remove several empty functions instead of converting them (Daniel)
* comment uses of raw pointers with a TODO (Daniel)
* TODO list: convert more helpers to use struct dma_buf_map

./drivers/gpu/drm/amd/amdgpu/amdgpu_xgmi.c:1: warning: no structured comments found
./drivers/gpu/drm/amd/amdgpu/amdgpu_ras.c:1: warning: no structured comments found
Those files only contain
/**

markups, but they're included twice there: one to parse
such markup, and another one to parse internal functions.
In the case of amdgpu_xgmi.c, as it has just one such
markup, we can simply include the file once, and let it
parse the entire file without passing arguments to kernel-doc.
This should place everything altogether.
For amdgpu_ras.c, however, we need to remove the kernel-doc
with just internal. This should be re-introduced if this
file ever gets new non-DOC markups.

This includes:

- ReST fixes
- Updates at the build system in order to support newer versions of

After this series, the number of html build warnings should reduce
significantly, and building with Sphinx 3.1 or later should now be
supported (although it is still recommended to use Sphinx 2.4.4).
As agreed with Jon, I should be sending you a late pull request by the
end of the merge window addressing remaining issues with docs build,
as there are a number of warning fixes that depends on pull requests
that should be happening along the merge window.
The end goal is to have a clean htmldocs build on Kernel 5.10.
PS. It should be noticed that Sphinx 3.0 is not currently supported,
as it lacks support for C domain namespaces. Such feature, needed in
order to document uAPI system calls with Sphinx 3.x, was added only on
Sphinx 3.1"

Several GEM and PRIME callbacks have been deprecated in favor of
per-instance GEM object functions. Remove the callbacks as they are
now unused. The only exception is .gem_prime_mmap, which is still
in use by several drivers.
What is also gone is gem_vm_ops in struct drm_driver. All drivers now
use struct drm_gem_object_funcs.vm_ops instead.
While at it, the patch also improves error handling around calls
to .free and .get_sg_table callbacks.

Add some kind of vblank workers. The interface is similar to regular
delayed works, and is mostly based off kthread_work. It allows for
scheduling delayed works that execute once a particular vblank sequence
has passed. It also allows for accurate flushing of scheduled vblank
works - in that flushing waits for both the vblank sequence and job
execution to complete, or for the work to get cancelled - whichever
comes first.
Whatever hardware programming we do in the work must be fast (must at
least complete during the vblank or scanout period, sometimes during the
first few scanlines of the vblank). As such we use a high-priority
per-CRTC thread to accomplish this.
Changes since v7:
* Stuff drm_vblank_internal.h and drm_vblank_work_internal.h contents
into drm_internal.h
* Get rid of unnecessary spinlock in drm_crtc_vblank_on()
* Remove !vblank->worker check
* Grab vbl_lock in drm_vblank_work_schedule()
* Mention self-rearming work items in drm_vblank_work_schedule() kdocs
* Return 1 from drm_vblank_work_schedule() if the work was scheduled
successfully, 0 or error code otherwise
* Use drm_dbg_core() instead of DRM_DEV_ERROR() in
drm_vblank_work_schedule()
* Remove vblank->worker checks in drm_vblank_destroy_worker() and
drm_vblank_flush_worker()
Changes since v6:
* Get rid of ->pending and seqcounts, and implement flushing through
simpler means - danvet
* Get rid of work_lock, just use drm_device->event_lock
* Move drm_vblank_work item cleanup into drm_crtc_vblank_off() so that
we ensure that all vblank work has finished before disabling vblanks
* Add checks into drm_crtc_vblank_reset() so we yell if it gets called
while there's vblank workers active
* Grab event_lock in both drm_crtc_vblank_on()/drm_crtc_vblank_off(),
the main reason for this is so that other threads calling
drm_vblank_work_schedule() are blocked from attempting to schedule
while we're in the middle of enabling/disabling vblanks.
* Move drm_handle_vblank_works() call below drm_handle_vblank_events()
* Simplify drm_vblank_work_cancel_sync()
* Fix drm_vblank_work_cancel_sync() documentation
* Move wake_up_all() calls out of spinlock where we can. The only one I
left was the call to wake_up_all() in drm_vblank_handle_works() as
this seemed like it made more sense just living in that function
(which is all technically under lock)
* Move drm_vblank_work related functions into their own source files
* Add drm_vblank_internal.h so we can export some functions we don't
want drivers using, but that we do need to use in drm_vblank_work.c
* Add a bunch of documentation
Changes since v4:
* Get rid of kthread interfaces we tried adding and move all of the
locking into drm_vblank.c. For implementing drm_vblank_work_flush(),
we now use a wait_queue and sequence counters in order to
differentiate between multiple work item executions.
* Get rid of drm_vblank_work_cancel() - this would have been pretty
difficult to actually reimplement and it occurred to me that neither
nouveau or i915 are even planning to use this function. Since there's
also no async cancel function for most of the work interfaces in the
kernel, it seems a bit unnecessary anyway.
* Get rid of to_drm_vblank_work() since we now are also able to just
pass the struct drm_vblank_work to work item callbacks anyway
Changes since v3:
* Use our own spinlocks, don't integrate so tightly with kthread_works
Changes since v2:
* Use kthread_workers instead of reinventing the wheel.

- Move the shmem helper section to the drm-mm.rst file, next to the
vram helpers. Makes a lot more sense there with the now wider scope.
Also, that's where the all the other backing storage stuff resides.
It's just the framebuffer helpers that should be in the kms helper
section.
- Try to clarify which functiosn are for implementing
drm_gem_object_funcs, and which for drivers to call directly. At
least one driver screwed that up a bit.

Especially if we consider how many drivers, do not know (or need to)
about the horror stories involving struct_mutex.
Just drop the suffix. It makes the API cleaner.
Done via the following script:
__from=drm_gem_object_put_unlocked
__to=drm_gem_object_put
for __file in $(git grep --name-only $__from); do
sed -i "s/$__from/$__to/g" $__file;
