In the current code, for a box with an indexed _BQC method, we
1. get the current brightness level by evaluating _BQC
2. set the value gotten in step 1 to _BCM
3. get the current brightness level again
4. set the _BQC_use_index flag if the results gotten
in step 1 and in step 3 don't equal.
But this logic doesn't work actually, because the _BQC_use_index
is not set when acpi_video_device_lcd_set_level is invoked.
This results in a failure in step 2.
http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=12249#c83
Now, we set the _BQC_use_index flag after invoking _BQC for the first
time. And reevaluate the _BQC to get the correct brightness level.

Setting ->owner as done currently (pde->owner = THIS_MODULE) is racy
as correctly noted at bug #12454. Someone can lookup entry with NULL
->owner, thus not pinning enything, and release it later resulting
in module refcount underflow.
We can keep ->owner and supply it at registration time like ->proc_fops
and ->data.
But this leaves ->owner as easy-manipulative field (just one C assignment)
and somebody will forget to unpin previous/pin current module when
switching ->owner. ->proc_fops is declared as "const" which should give
some thoughts.
->read_proc/->write_proc were just fixed to not require ->owner for
protection.
rmmod'ed directories will be empty and return "." and ".." -- no harm.
And directories with tricky enough readdir and lookup shouldn't be modular.
We definitely don't want such modular code.
Removing ->owner will also make PDE smaller.
So, let's nuke it.
Kudos to Jeff Layton for reminding about this, let's say, oversight.

Many buggy BIOSes don't export the brightness levels when machine
is on AC/Battery in the _BCL method.
Reformat the _BCL package for these laptops:
now the elements in device->brightness->levels[] are like:
levels[0]: brightness level when on AC power.
levels[1]: brightness level when on Battery power.
levels[2]: supported brightness level 1.
levels[3]: supported brightness level 2.
...
levels[n]: supported brightness level n-1.
levels[n + 1]: supported brightness level n.
So if there are n supported brightness levels on this laptop,
we will have n+2 entries in device->brightnes->levels[].
level[0] and level[1] are invalid on the laptops that don't
export the brightness levels on AC/Battery.
Fortunately, we never use these two values at all, even for the
valid ones.

According to the Spec the first two elements in the _BCL package won't be
regarded as the available brightness level. The first is the brightness when
full power is connected to the box(It means that the AC adapter is plugged).
The second is the brightness level when the box is on battery.
If the first two elements are still used while finding the next brightness
level, it will fall back to the lowest level when keeping on pressing
hotkey. (On some boxes the brightness will be changed twice when hotkey is
pressed once. One is in the ACPI video driver. The other is changed by sys I/F.
In the ACPI video driver the first two elements will be used while changing
the brightness. But the first two elements is skipped while using sys I/F.
In such case there exists the inconsistency).
So he first two elements had better be skipped while showing the available
brightness or finding the next brightness level.

Section B.6.2 of ACPI 3.0b specification that defines _BCL method
doesn't require the brightness levels returned to be sorted.
At least ThinkPad SL300 (and probably all IdeaPads) returns the
array reversed (i.e. bightest levels have lowest indexes), which
causes the brightness management behave in completely reversed
manner on these machines (brightness increases when the laptop is
idle, while the display dims when used).
Sorting the array by brightness level values after reading the list
fixes the issue.

switch backlight control off in vendor specific ACPI drivers (asus_acpi,

Currently it is possible to load above drivers and let both poke on the

This is a reimplemention of commit
0119509c4f
from Matthew Garrett <mjg59@srcf.ucam.org>
This patch got removed because of a regression: ThinkPads with a
Intel graphics card and an Integrated Graphics Device BIOS implementation
stopped working.
In fact, they only worked because the ACPI device of the discrete, the
wrong one, got used (via int10). So ACPI functions were poking on the wrong
hardware used which is a sever bug.
The next patch provides support for above ThinkPads to be able to
switch brightness via the legacy thinkpad_acpi driver and automatically
detect when to use it.
Original commit message from Matthew Garrett:
Vendors often ship machines with a choice of integrated or discrete
graphics, and use the same DSDT for both. As a result, the ACPI video
module will locate devices that may not exist on this specific platform.

i am actually heavily using the ACPI video extension for my Thinkpad X61
Tablet. I have bound the input events triggered by the brightness
up/down keys to a simple
echo <value> > /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video1/brightness
but everytime the event is triggered and acpi_video_device_lcd_set_level()
is called i got a notificication in my kernel log like:
set_level status: 0
set_level status: 0
set_level status: 0
set_level status: 0

In the past, the Linux/ACPI video driver invoked _DOS
(Display Output Switch) with the parameter 1
to tell the BIOS to switch the video output display for us.
But this conflicts with Linux native graphics drivers,
and can cause all sorts of issues, including hanging the system.
http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=6001
Here we change the Linux default to evaluate _DOS=0,
which tells the BIOS to simply send us a hotkey event
and not touch the graphics hardware.
The acpi video driver sends the display switch hotkey
event up through the intput layer, and X can interpret
that and use its native graphics driver to switch the display.
For the case where Linux has no native graphics driver running,
or the graphics driver doesn't know how to switch video and
the BIOS (safely) does, the previous behaviour can be restored with:
# echo 1 > /proc/acpi/video/*/DOS

This can only fix the problem that more than one video bus device
have the same AML name "VID".
ie. the proc I/F for the second "VID" video bus device is located under
/proc/acpi/video/VID1/...
As this is really rare and the ACPI proc I/F is a legacy feature that
we are planning to remove.
We won't provide a generic solution for this problem.

Both ACPI_VIDEO_NOTIFY_SWITCH and ACPI_VIDEO_NOTIFY_PROBE
are valid for video bus devices only. Actually ACPI video output
device should never be notified for a output device switch/probe.
ACPI bus devices notify handler already has the code to
handle these kinds of events.

Re-name acpi_bus_generate_event() to acpi_bus_generate_proc_event()

Add CONFIG_ACPI_PROC_EVENT to allow removal of /proc/acpi/event.

backlight: Fix order of Kconfig entries
Convert the backlight and LCD classes from struct class_device
to struct device since class_device is scheduled for removal.
One nasty API break is the backlight power attribute has had to be
renamed to bl_power and the LCD power attribute has had to be renamed
to lcd_power since the original names clash with the core. I can't see
a way around this.

Currently the acpi video module export the backlight interface to sysfs
also if acpi_video_device_lcd_query_levels() fails to read _BLC method
(e.g. because the method is not available). In this case the userspace
don't know which brightness level are supported and can't set a brightness
level (echo return with: "write error: Invalid Argument"). This happend
e.g. on a ASUS RF1 (correct supported by the asus-laptop module).
The video module should not export the backlight interface if query _BLC fail,
because you can't set anything from userspace and this make it useless.

Requires CONFIG_VIDEO_OUTPUT_CONTROL and CONFIG_ACPI_VIDEO.
After loading output.ko and video.ko, you would have
/sys/class/video_output and several device acpi_videoNum there.
For example, I got acpi_video0, acpi_video1,acpi_video2,and acpi_video3
under /sys/class/video_output on my T40.
I can query the status of output device0 by running " cat
/sys/class/video_output/acpi_video0
" The return value is defined in ACPI SPEC B.5.5 _DCS(Return the
Status of Output Device). Also you can turn off video1 and turn on
video0 by " echo 0 > acpi_video1; echo 0x80000000 > acpi_video0".
Please reference ACPI SPEC B.5.7 _DSS for the parameter definition.
Please note that it may or may NOT works purely depending on if
your vendor providing correct ACPI video extension support in bios.
the driver output.ko and video.ko just works like a interface to
invoke BIOS.

Per device data such as brightness belongs to the indivdual device
and should therefore be separate from the the backlight operation
function pointers. This patch splits the two types of data and
allows simplifcation of some code.

Remove uneeded owner field from backlight_properties structure.
Nothing uses it and it is unlikely that it will ever be used. The

unloaded code.

acpi_video_get_next_level was supposed to implement an algorithm to select
a new brightness level based on the old brightness level of an ACPI video
device, but it simply says "/* Fix me */" and returns the current
brightness.
This patch implements acpi_video_get_next_level properly. It had to change
a few constants at the top of the file because they were (apparently)
wrong, but it appears to work on my Dell Inspiron e1405 (with BIOS A05
only--BIOS A04 doesn't seem to send ACPI video hotkey events).

We do this mainly because:
1. hid is used to match ACPI devices and drivers.
.match method which is incompatible to driver model
can be deleted from acpi_driver.ops then.
2. As the .uevent method mark ACPI drivers by PNPID,
fake hid is set to non-PNPID devices so that udev script
can load the right ACPI driver by looking for
"HWID = " or "COMPTID = ".

Initial git repository build. I'm not bothering with the full history,
even though we have it. We can create a separate "historical" git
archive of that later if we want to, and in the meantime it's about
3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early
git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good
infrastructure for it.
Let it rip!
