Qian Cai c6975d7cab arm64: Track no early_pgtable_alloc() for kmemleak
After switched page size from 64KB to 4KB on several arm64 servers here,
kmemleak starts to run out of early memory pool due to a huge number of
those early_pgtable_alloc() calls:

  kmemleak_alloc_phys()
  memblock_alloc_range_nid()
  memblock_phys_alloc_range()
  early_pgtable_alloc()
  init_pmd()
  alloc_init_pud()
  __create_pgd_mapping()
  __map_memblock()
  paging_init()
  setup_arch()
  start_kernel()

Increased the default value of DEBUG_KMEMLEAK_MEM_POOL_SIZE by 4 times
won't be enough for a server with 200GB+ memory. There isn't much
interesting to check memory leaks for those early page tables and those
early memory mappings should not reference to other memory. Hence, no
kmemleak false positives, and we can safely skip tracking those early
allocations from kmemleak like we did in the commit fed84c7852
("mm/memblock.c: skip kmemleak for kasan_init()") without needing to
introduce complications to automatically scale the value depends on the
runtime memory size etc. After the patch, the default value of
DEBUG_KMEMLEAK_MEM_POOL_SIZE becomes sufficient again.

David Hildenbrand f7892d8e28 memblock: add MEMBLOCK_DRIVER_MANAGED to mimic IORESOURCE_SYSRAM_DRIVER_MANAGED
Let's add a flag that corresponds to IORESOURCE_SYSRAM_DRIVER_MANAGED,
indicating that we're dealing with a memory region that is never
indicated in the firmware-provided memory map, but always detected and
added by a driver.

Similar to MEMBLOCK_HOTPLUG, most infrastructure has to treat such
memory regions like ordinary MEMBLOCK_NONE memory regions -- for
example, when selecting memory regions to add to the vmcore for dumping
in the crashkernel via for_each_mem_range().

However, especially kexec_file is not supposed to select such memblocks
via for_each_free_mem_range() / for_each_free_mem_range_reverse() to
place kexec images, similar to how we handle
IORESOURCE_SYSRAM_DRIVER_MANAGED without CONFIG_ARCH_KEEP_MEMBLOCK.

We'll make sure that memory hotplug code sets the flag where applicable
(IORESOURCE_SYSRAM_DRIVER_MANAGED) next.  This prepares architectures
that need CONFIG_ARCH_KEEP_MEMBLOCK, such as arm64, for virtio-mem
support.

Note that kexec *must not* indicate this memory to the second kernel and
*must not* place kexec-images on this memory. Let's add a comment to
kexec_walk_memblock(), documenting how we handle MEMBLOCK_DRIVER_MANAGED
now just like using IORESOURCE_SYSRAM_DRIVER_MANAGED in
locate_mem_hole_callback() for kexec_walk_resources().

Also note that MEMBLOCK_HOTPLUG cannot be reused due to different
semantics:
	MEMBLOCK_HOTPLUG: memory is indicated as "System RAM" in the
	firmware-provided memory map and added to the system early during
	boot; kexec *has to* indicate this memory to the second kernel and
	can place kexec-images on this memory. After memory hotunplug,
	kexec has to be re-armed. We mostly ignore this flag when
	"movable_node" is not set on the kernel command line, because
	then we're told to not care about hotunpluggability of such
	memory regions.

	MEMBLOCK_DRIVER_MANAGED: memory is not indicated as "System RAM" in
	the firmware-provided memory map; this memory is always detected
	and added to the system by a driver; memory might not actually be
	physically hotunpluggable. kexec *must not* indicate this memory to
	the second kernel and *must not* place kexec-images on this memory.

David Hildenbrand 952eea9b01 memblock: allow to specify flags with memblock_add_node()
We want to specify flags when hotplugging memory. Let's prepare to pass
flags to memblock_add_node() by adjusting all existing users.

Note that when hotplugging memory the system is already up and running
and we might have concurrent memblock users: for example, while we're
hotplugging memory, kexec_file code might search for suitable memory
regions to place kexec images. It's important to add the memory
directly to memblock via a single call with the right flags, instead of
adding the memory first and apply flags later: otherwise, concurrent
memblock users might temporarily stumble over memblocks with wrong
flags, which will be important in a follow-up patch that introduces a
new flag to properly handle add_memory_driver_managed().

Mike Rapoport 658aafc813 memblock: exclude MEMBLOCK_NOMAP regions from kmemleak
Vladimir Zapolskiy reports:

Commit a7259df767 ("memblock: make memblock_find_in_range method
private") invokes a kernel panic while running kmemleak on OF platforms
with nomaped regions:

  Unable to handle kernel paging request at virtual address fff000021e00000
  [...]
    scan_block+0x64/0x170
    scan_gray_list+0xe8/0x17c
    kmemleak_scan+0x270/0x514
    kmemleak_write+0x34c/0x4ac

The memory allocated from memblock is registered with kmemleak, but if
it is marked MEMBLOCK_NOMAP it won't have linear map entries so an
attempt to scan such areas will fault.

Ideally, memblock_mark_nomap() would inform kmemleak to ignore
MEMBLOCK_NOMAP memory, but it can be called before kmemleak interfaces
operating on physical addresses can use __va() conversion.

Make sure that functions that mark allocated memory as MEMBLOCK_NOMAP
take care of informing kmemleak to ignore such memory.

Linus Torvalds 77e02cf57b memblock: introduce saner 'memblock_free_ptr()' interface
The boot-time allocation interface for memblock is a mess, with
'memblock_alloc()' returning a virtual pointer, but then you are
supposed to free it with 'memblock_free()' that takes a _physical_
address.

Not only is that all kinds of strange and illogical, but it actually
causes bugs, when people then use it like a normal allocation function,
and it fails spectacularly on a NULL pointer:

   https://lore.kernel.org/all/20210912140820.GD25450@xsang-OptiPlex-9020/

or just random memory corruption if the debug checks don't catch it:

   https://lore.kernel.org/all/61ab2d0c-3313-aaab-514c-e15b7aa054a0@suse.cz/

I really don't want to apply patches that treat the symptoms, when the
fundamental cause is this horribly confusing interface.

I started out looking at just automating a sane replacement sequence,
but because of this mix or virtual and physical addresses, and because
people have used the "__pa()" macro that can take either a regular
kernel pointer, or just the raw "unsigned long" address, it's all quite
messy.

So this just introduces a new saner interface for freeing a virtual
address that was allocated using 'memblock_alloc()', and that was kept
as a regular kernel pointer. And then it converts a couple of users
that are obvious and easy to test, including the 'xbc_nodes' case in
lib/bootconfig.c that caused problems.

memblock_find_in_range() is the very core of memblock allocations, so any
future changes to its internal behaviour would mandate updates of all the
users outside memblock.

Replace the calls to memblock_find_in_range() with an equivalent calls to
memblock_phys_alloc() and memblock_phys_alloc_range() and make
memblock_find_in_range() private method of memblock.

This simplifies the callers, ensures that (unlikely) errors in
memblock_reserve() are handled and improves maintainability of
memblock_find_in_range().

Mike Rapoport 08678804e0 memblock: stop poisoning raw allocations
Functions memblock_alloc_exact_nid_raw() and memblock_alloc_try_nid_raw()
are intended for early memory allocation without overhead of zeroing the
allocated memory. Since these functions were used to allocate the memory
map, they have ended up with addition of a call to page_init_poison() that
poisoned the allocated memory when CONFIG_PAGE_POISON was set.

Since the memory map is allocated using a dedicated memmep_alloc()
function that takes care of the poisoning, remove page poisoning from the
memblock_alloc_*_raw() functions.

Geert Uytterhoeven e888fa7bb8 memblock: Check memory add/cap ordering
For memblock_cap_memory_range() to work properly, it should be called
after memory is detected and added to memblock with memblock_add() or
memblock_add_node(). If memblock_cap_memory_range() would be called
before memory is registered, we may silently corrupt memory later
because the crash kernel will see all memory as available.

Print a warning and bail out if ordering is not satisfied.

Mike Rapoport 79e482e9c3 memblock: make for_each_mem_range() traverse MEMBLOCK_HOTPLUG regions
Commit b10d6bca87 ("arch, drivers: replace for_each_membock() with
for_each_mem_range()") didn't take into account that when there is
movable_node parameter in the kernel command line, for_each_mem_range()
would skip ranges marked with MEMBLOCK_HOTPLUG.

The page table setup code in POWER uses for_each_mem_range() to create
the linear mapping of the physical memory and since the regions marked
as MEMORY_HOTPLUG are skipped, they never make it to the linear map.

A later access to the memory in those ranges will fail:

 These crashes can be mitigated by enabling CONFIG_HOLES_IN_ZONE on ARM and
 essentially turning pfn_valid_within() to pfn_valid() instead of having it
 hardwired to 1 on that architecture, but this would require to keep
 CONFIG_HOLES_IN_ZONE solely for this purpose.

 A cleaner approach is to update ARM's implementation of pfn_valid() to take
 into accounting rounding of the freed memory map to pageblock boundaries
 and make sure it returns true for PFNs that have memory map entries even if
 there is no physical memory backing those PFNs.

Mike Rapoport 9092d4f7a1 memblock: update initialization of reserved pages
The struct pages representing a reserved memory region are initialized
using reserve_bootmem_range() function. This function is called for each
reserved region just before the memory is freed from memblock to the buddy
page allocator.

The struct pages for MEMBLOCK_NOMAP regions are kept with the default
values set by the memory map initialization which makes it necessary to
have a special treatment for such pages in pfn_valid() and
pfn_valid_within().

Split out initialization of the reserved pages to a function with a
meaningful name and treat the MEMBLOCK_NOMAP regions the same way as the
reserved regions and mark struct pages for the NOMAP regions as
PageReserved.

The code that frees unused memory map uses rounds start and end of the

Lots of core memory management functionality relies on homogeneity of the

Although currently, for the architectures that use free_unused_memmap(),

At the same time, the kernel image is protected with memblock_reserve(),
so we can just start searching at PAGE_SIZE. In this case the bottom-up
allocation has the same chances to success as a top-down allocation, so
there is no reason to fallback in the case of a failure. All together it
simplifies the logic.

Mike Rapoport 4f5b0c1789 arm, arm64: move free_unused_memmap() to generic mm
ARM and ARM64 free unused parts of the memory map just before the
initialization of the page allocator. To allow holes in the memory map both
architectures overload pfn_valid() and define HAVE_ARCH_PFN_VALID.

Allowing holes in the memory map for FLATMEM may be useful for small
machines, such as ARC and m68k and will enable those architectures to cease
using DISCONTIGMEM and still support more than one memory bank.

Move the functions that free unused memory map to generic mm and enable
them in case HAVE_ARCH_PFN_VALID=y.

Faiyaz Mohammed b5cf2d6c81 mm: memblock: add more debug logs
It is useful to know the exact caller of memblock_phys_alloc_range() to
track early memory reservations during development.

Currently, when memblock debugging is enabled, the allocations done with
memblock_phys_alloc_range() are only reported at memblock_reserve():

[    0.000000] memblock_reserve: [0x000000023fc6b000-0x000000023fc6bfff] memblock_alloc_range_nid+0xc0/0x188

Add memblock_dbg() to memblock_phys_alloc_range() to get details about
its usage.

For example:

[    0.000000] memblock_phys_alloc_range: 4096 bytes align=0x1000 from=0x0000000000000000 max_addr=0x0000000000000000 early_pgtable_alloc+0x24/0x178

Mauro Carvalho Chehab 9303c9d5e9 docs: get rid of :c:type explicit declarations for structs
The :c:type:`foo` only works properly with structs before
Sphinx 3.x.

On Sphinx 3.x, structs should now be declared using the
.. c:struct, and referenced via :c:struct tag.

As we now have the automarkup.py macro, that automatically
convert:
	struct foo

into cross-references, let's get rid of that, solving
several warnings when building docs with Sphinx 3.x.

Mike Rapoport c9118e6c37 arch, mm: replace for_each_memblock() with for_each_mem_pfn_range()
There are several occurrences of the following pattern:

		end_pfn = memblock_region_memory_end_pfn(reg);

		/* do something with start_pfn and end_pfn */

Rather than iterate over all memblock.memory regions and each time query
for their start and end PFNs, use for_each_mem_pfn_range() iterator to get
simpler and clearer code.

David Hildenbrand 7764990581 mm/memblock: expose only miminal interface to add/walk physmem
"physmem" in the memblock allocator is somewhat weird: it's not actually
used for allocation, it's simply information collected during boot, which
describes the unmodified physical memory map at boot time, without any
standby/hotplugged memory. It's only used on s390 and is currently the
only reason s390 keeps using CONFIG_ARCH_KEEP_MEMBLOCK.

Physmem isn't numa aware and current users don't specify any flags. Let's
hide it from the user, exposing only for_each_physmem(), and simplify. The
interface for physmem is now really minimalistic:
- memblock_physmem_add() to add ranges
- for_each_physmem() / __next_physmem_range() to walk physmem ranges

Don't place it into an __init section and don't discard it without
CONFIG_ARCH_KEEP_MEMBLOCK. As we're reusing __next_mem_range(), remove
the __meminit notifier to avoid section mismatch warnings once
CONFIG_ARCH_KEEP_MEMBLOCK is no longer used with
CONFIG_HAVE_MEMBLOCK_PHYS_MAP.

While fixing up the documentation, sneak in some related cleanups. We can
stop setting CONFIG_ARCH_KEEP_MEMBLOCK for s390 next.

Mike Rapoport 3f08a302f5 mm: remove CONFIG_HAVE_MEMBLOCK_NODE_MAP option
CONFIG_HAVE_MEMBLOCK_NODE_MAP is used to differentiate initialization of
nodes and zones structures between the systems that have region to node
mapping in memblock and those that don't.

Currently all the NUMA architectures enable this option and for the
non-NUMA systems we can presume that all the memory belongs to node 0 and
therefore the compile time configuration option is not required.

The remaining few architectures that use DISCONTIGMEM without NUMA are
easily updated to use memblock_add_node() instead of memblock_add() and
thus have proper correspondence of memblock regions to NUMA nodes.

Still, free_area_init_node() must have a backward compatible version
because its semantics with and without CONFIG_HAVE_MEMBLOCK_NODE_MAP is
different. Once all the architectures will use the new semantics, the
entire compatibility layer can be dropped.

To avoid addition of extra run time memory to store node id for
architectures that keep memblock but have only a single node, the node id
field of the memblock_region is guarded by CONFIG_NEED_MULTIPLE_NODES and
the corresponding accessors presume that in those cases it is always 0.

Mike Rapoport d622abf74f mm: memblock: replace dereferences of memblock_region.nid with API calls
Patch series "mm: rework free_area_init*() funcitons".

After the discussion [1] about removal of CONFIG_NODES_SPAN_OTHER_NODES
and CONFIG_HAVE_MEMBLOCK_NODE_MAP options, I took it a bit further and
updated the node/zone initialization.

Since all architectures have memblock, it is possible to use only the
newer version of free_area_init_node() that calculates the zone and node
boundaries based on memblock node mapping and architectural limits on
possible zone PFNs.

The architectures that still determined zone and hole sizes can be
switched to the generic code and the old code that took those zone and
hole sizes can be simply removed.

And, since it all started from the removal of
CONFIG_NODES_SPAN_OTHER_NODES, the memmap_init() is now updated to iterate
over memblocks and so it does not need to perform early_pfn_to_nid() query
for every PFN.

This patch (of 21):

There are several places in the code that directly dereference
memblock_region.nid despite this field being defined only when
CONFIG_HAVE_MEMBLOCK_NODE_MAP=y.

Replace these with calls to memblock_get_region_nid() to improve code
robustness and to avoid possible breakage when
CONFIG_HAVE_MEMBLOCK_NODE_MAP will be removed.

Aslan Bakirov 8676af1ff2 mm: cma: NUMA node interface
I've noticed that there is no interface exposed by CMA which would let
me to declare contigous memory on particular NUMA node.

This patchset adds the ability to try to allocate contiguous memory on a

doesn't work.

Implement a new method for declaring contigous memory on particular node
and keep cma_declare_contiguous() as a wrapper.

On the s390 platform memblock.physmem array is being built by directly

helper functions for physmem array when HAVE_MEMBLOCK_PHYS_MAP is

memblock_add() and memblock_reserve().  Make memblock_add_range() a
static function as it is no longer getting used outside of memblock.

Yunfeng Ye 0ac398b171 mm: support memblock alloc on the exact node for sparse_buffer_init()
sparse_buffer_init() use memblock_alloc_try_nid_raw() to allocate memory
for page management structure, if memory allocation fails from specified
node, it will fall back to allocate from other nodes.

Normally, the page management structure will not exceed 2% of the total
memory, but a large continuous block of allocation is needed. In most
cases, memory allocation from the specified node will succeed, but a
node memory become highly fragmented will fail. we expect to allocate
memory base section rather than by allocating a large block of memory
from other NUMA nodes

Add memblock_alloc_exact_nid_raw() for this situation, which allocate
boot memory block on the exact node. If a large contiguous block memory
allocate fail in sparse_buffer_init(), it will fall back to allocate
small block memory base section.
