Currently there's no error message prompted if we failed to start
workload. And we still get some trace which is confusing. Let's tell
users what happened.

Extend error messages to mention CAP_PERFMON capability as an option to
substitute CAP_SYS_ADMIN capability for secure system performance
monitoring and observability operations. Make
perf_event_paranoid_check() and __cmd_ftrace() to be aware of
CAP_PERFMON capability.
CAP_PERFMON implements the principle of least privilege for performance
monitoring and observability operations (POSIX IEEE 1003.1e 2.2.2.39
principle of least privilege: A security design principle that states
that a process or program be granted only those privileges (e.g.,
capabilities) necessary to accomplish its legitimate function, and only
for the time that such privileges are actually required)
For backward compatibility reasons access to perf_events subsystem remains
open for CAP_SYS_ADMIN privileged processes but CAP_SYS_ADMIN usage for
secure perf_events monitoring is discouraged with respect to CAP_PERFMON
capability.

Note that using '38' in place of 'cap_perfmon' works to some degree with
an old libcap, its only when cap_get_flag() is called that libcap
performs an error check based on the maximum value known for
capabilities that it will fail.
This makes determining the default of perf_event_attr.exclude_kernel to
fail, as it can't determine if CAP_PERFMON is in place.
Using 'perf top -e cycles' avoids the default check and sets
perf_event_attr.exclude_kernel to 1.

The buffer containing the string used to set cpumask is overwritten at
the end of the string later in cpu_map__snprint_mask due to not enough

And thus causes the following failure:
$ perf ftrace ls

Before this change, the '--graph-funcs', '--nograph-funcs' and
'--trace-funcs' options didn't work as expected when the <func> doesn't
exist. Because the kernel side hid possible errors.
$ sudo ./perf ftrace -a --graph-depth 1 --graph-funcs abcdefg

3) 0.161 us | __sb_end_write();
3) 0.710 us | SyS_close();
3) 7.848 us | exit_to_usermode_loop();
On the example above, I specified the function filter 'abcdefg' but all
functions are enabled. The expected result is for all functions to be
filtered, since there is no such function ('abcdefg')
The original fix is to make the kernel support '\0' as end of string:
https://lkml.org/lkml/2018/1/16/116
But above fix cannot be compatible with old kernels. Then Namhyung Kim
suggest adding a space after function name.
This patch will append an '\n' when write tracing file. After this fix,
the perf will report correct error state. Also let it print an error if
reset_tracing_files() fails.
Committer testing:
Now it prints:
# perf ftrace -a --graph-depth 1 --graph-funcs abcdefg

the kernel variant, to reduce silly differences among tools/ and the
kernel sources, making it easier for people to work in both codebases.
And then doing:

Looks clearer than doing:

Instead of getting it out of luck from util.h, where it isn't needed at

Removing it from util.h, part of an effort to disentangle the includes
hell, that makes changes to util.h or something included by it to cause
a complete rebuild of the tools.

We got it from the git sources but never used it for anything, with the
place where this would be somehow used remaining:
static int run_builtin(struct cmd_struct *p, int argc, const char **argv)
{
prefix = NULL;
if (p->option & RUN_SETUP)
prefix = NULL; /* setup_perf_directory(); */
Ditch it.

It's convenient to use the pager when seeing many lines of result.
Note that setup_pager() should be called after perf_evlist__prepare_workload()
since they can interfere each other regarding shared stdio streams.

The -p (--pid) option enables to trace existing process by its pid.
Committer notes:
Testing it:
Using the function_graph tracer on a process that is just waiting for user
input and thus will make 'perf ftrace' sit there waiting for that, then press
any key on that mutt session and see what happens:

As a result of commit a3497642c261 ("perf ftrace: Make 'function_graph'
be the default tracer") the ftrace.tracer variable can't be NULL but the
other code setting default tracer remained.

So that we can suppress the '-t function_graph' and get a more compact command
line:
# perf ftrace usleep 123456 | grep raw_spin_lock | sort -k2 -nr | head -5

2) 0.516 us | _raw_spin_lock();

2) 0.374 us | _raw_spin_lock_irqsave();
