This reverts commit 237ed86c69.
Our current implementation of live status check (repeat 9 times
with 10ms delays between each attempt as a workaround for
buggy displays) imposes a rather serious penalty, time wise,
on intel_hdmi_detect(). Since we we already skip live status
checks on platforms before gen 7, and since we seem to have
coped quite well before the live status check was introduced
for newer platforms too, the previous behaviour is probably
preferable, at least unless someone can point to a use-case
that the live status check improves (apart from "Bspec says so".)

This is mostly code churn, with exception of a few places:
- intel_display.c has changes in intel_sanitize_encoder
- intel_ddi.c has intel_ddi_fdi_disable calling intel_ddi_post_disable,
and required a function change. Also affects intel_display.c
- intel_dp_mst.c passes a NULL crtc_state and conn_state to
intel_ddi_post_disable for shutting down the real encoder.
If we would pass conn_state, then conn_state->connector !=
intel_dig_port->connector and conn_state->best_encoder !=
to_intel_encoder(intel_dig_port).
We also shouldn't pass crtc_state, because in that case the
disabling sequence may potentially be different depending on
which crtc is disabled last. Nice way to introduce bugs.
No other functional changes are done, diff stat is already huge.
Each encoder type will need to be fixed to use the atomic states
separately.

Atm, we apply this workaround somewhat inconsistently at the following
points: driver loading, LVDS init, eDP PPS init, system resume. As this
workaround also affects registers other than PPS (timing, PLL) a more
consistent way is to apply it early after the PPS HW context is known to
be lost: driver loading, system resume and on VLV/CHV/BXT when turning
on power domains.

being:
- Register fields appearing, disappearing from one platform to the
next: panel-reset-on-powerdown, backlight-on, panel-port,
register-unlock
- Different register base addresses
- Different number of PPS instances: 2 on VLV/CHV/BXT, 1 everywhere

We can merge the separate set of PPS definitions by extending the PPS
instance argument to all platforms and using instance 0 on platforms
with a single instance. This means we'll need to calculate the register

During hibernation the cached DP port register value will be left with
whatever value we have there when we create the hibernation image.
Currently that means the port (and eDP PLL) will be off in the cached
value. However when we resume there is no guarantee that the value
in the actual register will match the cached value. If i915 isn't
loaded in the kernel that loads the hibernation image, the port may
well be on (eg. left on by the BIOS). The encoder state readout
does the right thing in this case and updates our encoder state
to reflect the actual hardware state. However the post-resume modeset
will then use the stale cached port register value in
intel_dp_link_down() and potentially confuse the hardware.
This was caught by the following assert
WARNING: CPU: 3 PID: 5288 at ../drivers/gpu/drm/i915/intel_dp.c:2184 assert_edp_pll+0x99/0xa0 [i915]
eDP PLL state assertion failure (expected on, current off)
on account of the eDP PLL getting prematurely turned off when
shutting down the port, since the DP_PLL_ENABLE bit wasn't set
in the cached register value.
Presumably I introduced this problem in
commit 6fec766283 ("drm/i915: Use intel_dp->DP in eDP PLL setup")
as before that we didn't update the cached value after shuttting the
port down. That's assuming the port got enabled at least once prior
to hibernating. If that didn't happen then the cached value would
still have been totally out of sync with reality (eg. first boot w/o
eDP on, then hibernate, and then resume with eDP on).
So, let's fix this properly and refresh the cached register value from
the hardware register during resume.
DDI platforms shouldn't use the cached value during port disable at
least, so shouldn't have this particular issue. They might still have
issues if we skip the initial modeset and then try to retrain the link
or something. But untangling this DP vs. DDI mess is a bigger topic,
so let's jut punt on DDI for now.

The PPS registers are backed by power well #0 and as such may be reset
after system or runtime suspend (both implying a possible DC9
transition). Fix this by reusing the VLV/CHV PPS pipe-reassignment
logic. The difference on BXT is that the PPS instances are not pipe but
port (or more accurately pin) specific, so we only need to care about
the lost HW state. As opposed to VLV/CHV the SW state is fixed and
initialized during connector init.
This also paves the way towards using the actual port->PPS instance
mapping based on VBT.
This fixes eDP link training errors on BXT after suspend, where we
started the link training too early due to an incorrect T3 (panel power

Move the early PPS initialization calls next to the rest of PPS
initialization steps. This allows us to forgo a duplicated call to
intel_dp_init_panel_power_sequencer_registers() on VLV/CHV.
This will swap the order of DP AUX registration wrt. PPS initialization.
There is an existing race here in case of a user space access via the
DPAUX device node after DP AUX registration and before calling
intel_dp_init_panel_power_sequencer_registers(), but this change won't
make this worse. The fix for this is to separate DP AUX initialization

The order of MST wrt. PPS init as well as the order of
intel_dp_init_panel_power_sequencer_registers() wrt.

The initial DPCD read for eDP detection involves using the PPS, but so
far we only initialized the PPS registers after the DPCD read. The
reason this was done so far is to preserve a possible LVDS PPS HW setup
if LVDS is detected but eDP is not. This is not an issue any more after
the previous patch, so we can move the init earlier now.
This was caught by CI with the PPS sanity checks in place and the

Atm on IBX/CPT we attempt to detect if eDP is present even if LVDS was
already detected and an encoder for it was registered. This involves
trying to read out the eDP DPCD, which in turn needs the same power
sequencer that LVDS uses. Poking at the VDD line at an unexpected time

prevent this. Registering both an LVDS and an eDP connector would also
present a similar problem accessing the shared PPS at any point later in

The drm_dp_aux is associated with the intel_dp encoder and not the

attempting to free the drm_dp_aux from inside the connector cleanup
causes a use-after-free.

The VBT has these mysterious H/V image sizes as part of the display
timings. Looking at some dumps those appear to be the physical
dimensions in mm. Which makes sense since the timing descriptor matches
the format used by EDID detailed timing descriptor, which defines these
as "H/V Addressable Video Image Size in mm".
So let's use that information from the panel fixed mode to get the

The driver's VDD on/off logic assumes that whenever the VDD is on we
also hold an AUX power domain reference. Since BIOS can leave the VDD on
during booting and resuming and on DDI platforms we won't take a
corresponding power reference, the above assumption won't hold on those
platforms and an eventual delayed VDD off work will do an extraneous AUX
power domain put resulting in a refcount underflow. Fix this the same
way we did this for non-DDI DP encoders:
commit 6d93c0c417 ("drm/i915: fix VDD state tracking after system
resume")
At the same time call the DP encoder suspend handler the same way as the
non-DDI DP encoders do to flush any pending VDD off work. Leaving the
work running may cause a HW access where we don't expect this (at a point
where power domains are suspended already).
While at it remove an unnecessary function call indirection.
This fixed for me AUX refcount underflow problems on BXT during
suspend/resume.

The underruns we were seeing when enabling eDP port A on ILK seem to
have been caused by prematurely clearing the LP1+ watermark values when
disabling LP1+ watermarks. Now that the watermarks are handled
properly, we can rip out the underrun suppression around the port A

We still need to worry about the underruns on FDI when enabling

Take a bigger hammer to the underrun suppression on ILK. Instead of
trying to suppress them at specific points in the modeset sequence just
silence them across the entire sequence. This gets rid of some underruns
at least on my ILK. Note that this changes SNB and IVB to follow the
same approach just to keep the code less convoluted. The difference is
that on those platforms we won't suppress CPU underruns for port A since
it doesn't seem to be necessary.
My ILK has port A eDP and two PCH HDMI ports, so I can't be sure this is
as effective on other PCH port types. Perhaps we still need some of
Daniel's extra vblank waits [2]?
I've still been able to trigger an underrun on the other pipe, but
fixing that perhaps needs the LP1+ disable trick I implemented here [1]
which never got merged.
A few details which hamper stress testing on my ILK are that sometimes
the PCH transcoder gets messed up and refuses to shut down, and sometimes
even the panel power sequencer apparently gets stuck on the always on

Sink count can change between short pulse hpd hence this patch
adds a member variable to intel_dp so we can track any changes
between short pulse interrupts.
This patch reads sink_count dpcd always and removes its

SINK_COUNT dpcd is not dependent on DOWNSTREAM_PORT_PRESENT dpcd.
SINK_COUNT denotes if a display is attached, while
DOWNSTREAM_PORT_PRESET indicates how many ports are available
in the dongle where display can be attached. so it is possible
for sink count to change irrespective of value in downstream

intel_dp_get_link_status() performs dpcd read first
then based on crtc active / enabled it will
perform the link training.
This is because short pulse is a generic interrupt
which should always be handled, because it may mean:
1. Hotplug/unplug of MST panel
2. Hotplug/unplug of dongle
3. Link status change for other DP panels

Current DP detection has DPCD operations split across
intel_dp_hpd_pulse and intel_dp_detect which contains
duplicates as well. Also intel_dp_detect is called
during modes enumeration as well which will result
in multiple dpcd operations. So this patch tries
to solve both these by bringing all DPCD operations
in one single function and make intel_dp_detect
use existing values instead of repeating same steps.

intel_dp_detect() is called for not just detection but
during modes enumeration as well. Repeating the whole
sequence during each of these calls is wasteful and
time consuming.
This patch moves probing for panel, DPCD read etc done in
intel_dp_detect() to a new function intel_dp_long_pulse().
Note that the behavior of intel_dp_detect() is changed to
report connected or disconnected depending on whether the
EDID is available or not.
This change will be required by further patches in the series
to avoid performing duplicated DPCD operations on hotplug.

The recent commit [0bdf5a05647a: drm/i915: Add reverse mapping between
port and intel_encoder] introduced a reverse mapping to retrieve
intel_dig_port object from the port number. The code assumed that the
port vs intel_dig_port are 1:1 mapping. But in reality, this was a
too naive assumption.
As Martin reported about the missing HDMI audio on his SNB machine,
pre-HSW chips may have multiple intel_dig_port objects corresponding
to the same port. Since we assign the mapping statically at the init
time and the multiple objects override the map, it may not match with
the actually enabled output.
This patch tries to address the regression above. The reverse mapping
is provided basically only for the audio callbacks, so now we set /
clear the mapping dynamically at enabling and disabling HDMI/DP audio,
so that we can always track the latest and correct object
corresponding to the given port.

Now that the mess with AUX clock divder rounding is sorted out and
we have both cdclk and rawclk cached in dev_priv, we can clean up
the .get_aux_clock_divider() functions a bit.
The main thing here is just calling ilk_get_aux_clock_divider()
from hsw_get_aux_clock_divider() except for the LPT:H special
case.
We could go further and call g4x_get_aux_clock_divider() from
ilk_get_aux_clock_divider() for the PCH ports, but I'm sure Jani

Generalize rawclk handling by storing it in dev_priv.
Presumably our hrawclk readout works at least for CTG and ELK
since we've been using it for DP AUX on those platforms. There
are no real docs anymore after configdb vanished, so the only
reference is the public CTG GMCH spec. What bits are listed in
that doc match our code. The ELK GMCH spec have no relevant
details unfortunately.
The PNV situation is less clear. Starting from
commit aa17cdb4f8 ("drm/i915: initialize backlight max from VBT")
we assume that the CTG/ELK hrawclk readout works for PNV as well.
At least the results *seem* reasonable for one PNV machine (Lenovo
Ideapad S10-3t). Sadly the PNV GMCH spec doesn't have the goods on
the relevant register either.
So let's keep assuming it works for PNV,ELK,CTG and read it out on
those platforms. G33 also has hrawclk according to some notes
in BSpec, but we don't actually need it for anything, so let's not
even try to read it out there.

outside party) made a mess of the state and we're just trying to take

So as a prep step to being able sanitize such a bogus state, move the

least they do on the machine I have, and apparently on Nick Bowler's

So gm45 may be the only platform where they don't agree. At least
that seems to be the case based on the (somewhat incomplete)

So far, the i915 driver and some other drivers set it to the drm_device,
which doesn't allow one to know which DP a given aux channel is related
to. Changing this to be the drm_connector provides proper nesting, still
allowing one to get the drm_device from it. Some drivers already set it
to the drm_connector.
This also removes the need to add a sysfs link for the i2c device under
the connector, as it will already be there.

Rather than having open coded checks for the DDI A/E configuration,
just store the max supported lane count in intel_digital_port.
We had an open coded check for DDI A, but not for DDI E. So we may
have been vilating the DDI E max lane count.

Here are the patchset to add get_eld op to audio component for
communicating more directly between i915 and HD-audio.
Currently, the HDMI/DP audio status and ELD are notified and obtained
via the hardware-level communication over HD-audio unsolicited event

information. As we already have a notification via audio component,
this is another step forward; namely, the audio driver may fetch
directly the audio status and ELD via the new component op.

Mainly aux communications on sink_crc
were failing a lot randomly on recent platforms.
The first solution was to try to use intel_dp_dpcd_read_wake, but then
it was suggested to move retries to drm level.
Since drm level was already taking care of retries and didn't want
to through random retries on that level the second solution was to
put the retries at aux_transfer layer what was nacked.
So I realized we had so many retries in different places and
started to organize that a bit. During this organization I noticed
that we weren't handing at all the case were the message size was
zeroed. And this was exactly the case that was affecting sink_crc.
Also we weren't respect BSPec who says this size message = 0 or > 20
are forbidden.
It is a fact that we still have no clue why we are getting this
forbidden value there. But anyway we need to handle that for now
so we return -EBUSY and drm level takes care of the retries that
are already in place.
v2: Print debug messsage when this case is reached as suggested
by Jani.
v3: This patch is crucial to make PSR test cases reliably working
on SKL. So split this patch from the aux re-org series and add
a FIXME as a promisse to continue that effort besides reminding
to remove the sleep when that is merged.
v4: Use a bigger usleep range so kernel doesn't need to be interrupted
on a exact time, as suggested by Paulo.
But anyway we should discuss the better time
ranges on the EBUSY handle re-org at drm level since this one here
is temporary.

This patch adds a reverse mapping from a digital port number to
intel_encoder object containing the corresponding intel_digital_port.
It simplifies the query of the encoder a lot.
Note that, even if it's a valid digital port, the dig_port_map[] might
point still to NULL -- usually it implies a DP MST port. Due to this
fact, the NULL check in each place has no WARN_ON() and just skips the
port. Once when the situation changes in future, we might introduce
WARN_ON() for a more strict check.

The cherryview device shares many characteristics with the valleyview

corresponding device info structure included .is_valleyview = 1.
This is not correct and leads to some confusion.
This patch changes .is_valleyview to .is_cherryview in the cherryview

Then where appropriate, instances of IS_VALLEYVIEW are replaced with

We've picked up a few conflicts and it would be nice
to resolve them before we move onwards.
Introduce intel_display_port_aux_power_domain() which simply returns
the appropriate AUX power domain for a specific port, and then replace
the intel_display_port_power_domain() with calls to the new function
in the DP code. As long as we're not actually enabling the port we don't
need the lane power domains, and those are handled now purely from
modeset_update_crtc_power_domains().
My initial motivation for this was to see if I could keep the DPIO power
wells powered down while doing AUX on CHV, but turns out I can't so this
doesn't change anything for CHV at least. But I think it's still a
worthwile change.

Currently a DDI port may register the DP hotplug handler even though
it's used with HDMI, and the DP HPD handler overrides the encoder
type forcibly to DP. This caused the inconsistency on a machine
connected with a HDMI monitor; upon a hotplug event, the DDI port is
suddenly switched to be handled as a DP although the same monitor is
kept connected, and this leads to the erroneous blank output.
This patch papers over the bug by excluding the previous HDMI encoder
type from this override. This should be fixed more fundamentally,
e.g. by moving the encoder type reset from the HPD or by having
individual encoder objects for HDMI and DP. But since the bug has
been present for a long time (3.17), it's better to have a
quick-n-dirty fix for now, and keep working on a cleaner fix.

Make I915_READ and I915_WRITE more type safe by wrapping the register
offset in a struct. This should eliminate most of the fumbles we've had
with misplaced parens.
This only takes care of normal mmio registers. We could extend the idea
to other register types and define each with its own struct. That way
you wouldn't be able to accidentally pass the wrong thing to a specific
register access function.
The gpio_reg setup is probably the ugliest thing left. But I figure I'd
just leave it for now, and wait for some divine inspiration to strike
before making it nice.
As for the generated code, it's actually a bit better sometimes. Eg.
looking at i915_irq_handler(), we can see the following change:
lea 0x70024(%rdx,%rax,1),%r9d
mov $0x1,%edx
- movslq %r9d,%r9
- mov %r9,%rsi
- mov %r9,-0x58(%rbp)
- callq *0xd8(%rbx)
+ mov %r9d,%esi
+ mov %r9d,-0x48(%rbp)
callq *0xd8(%rbx)
So previously gcc thought the register offset might be signed and
decided to sign extend it, just in case. The rest appears to be
mostly just minor shuffling of instructions.

It was created at 'commit aabc95dcf2 (drm/i915: Dont -ETIMEDOUT
on identical new and previous (count, crc).")' becase the counter
wasn't reliable.
Now that we properly wait for the counter to be reset we can rely
a bit more in the counter.
Also that patch stopped to return -ETIMEDOUT so the test case is
unable to skip when it is unreliable and end up in many fails
that should be skip instead.
So, with the counter more reliable we can remove
this hack that just makes things more confusing when test cases
are really expecting the same CRC and let test case skip if that's
not the case.

Use kasprintf() to generate the "DPDDC-<port>" name for the aux helper.
To deal with errors properly make intel_dp_aux_init() return something,
and adjust the caller to match. It seems we were also missing a
intel_dp_mst_encoder_cleanup() call on edp (non-port A) init failures,
so add that too.

Use intel_dp->DP in the eDP PLL setup, instead of doing RMWs.
To do this we need to move DP_AUDIO_OUTPUT_ENABLE setup to happen later,
so that we don't enable audio accidentally while configuring the PLL.
Note that actually we already enabled audio before the port due to
the double port register write magic required by VLV/CHV from
7b713f50d7 ("drm/i915: Fix eDP link training when switching pipes on VLV/CHV")
So that gets changed now to keep audio off as long as the port is off.
Also intel_dp_link_down() must be made to update intel_dp->DP so that we
don't re-enable the port by accident when turning off the PLL. This is
safe now that we don't call intel_dp_link_down() during link retraining.

exceptions are platform specific code.) Add helpers to check for a
platform and a revision range: IS_SKL_REVID() and IS_BXT_REVID(). In
most places this simplifies and clarifies the code. It will be obvious
that revid macros are used for the correct platform.
This should make it easier to find all the revision checks for
workarounds for each platform, and make it easier to remove them once we
drop support for early hardware revisions.
This should also make it easier to differentiate between Skylake and

The Bspec is very clear that Live status must be checked about before
trying to read EDID over DDC channel. This patch makes sure that HDMI
EDID is read only when live status is up.
The live status doesn't seem to perform very consistent across various
platforms when tested with different monitors. The reason behind that is
some monitors are late to provide right voltage to set live_status up.
So, after getting the interrupt, for a small duration, live status reg
fluctuates, and then settles down showing the correct staus.
This is explained here in, in a rough way:
HPD line ________________
|\ T1 = Monitor Hotplug causing IRQ
| \______________________________________
| |
| |
| | T2 = Live status is stable
| | _____________________________________
| | /|
Live status _____________|_|/ |
| | |
| | |
| | |
T0 T1 T2
(Between T1 and T2 Live status fluctuates or can be even low, depending on
the monitor)
After several experiments, we have concluded that a max delay
of 30ms is enough to allow the live status to settle down with
most of the monitors. This total delay of 30ms has been split into
a resolution of 3 retries of 10ms each, for the better cases.
This delay is kept at 30ms, keeping in consideration that, HDCP compliance
expect the HPD handler to respond a plug out in 100ms, by disabling port.

v6: Drop the (!detect_edid && !live_status check) check because for DDI

as hdmi which leads to issues during unplug because of the above check.

Currently we release the lane soft reset before lane stagger settings
have been programmed. I believe that means we don't actually do lane
staggering. So move the soft reset deassert to happen after lane
staggering has been programmed.
The one confusing thing in this is that when we remove the power down
override from the lanes, they power up with defaul register values,
which do not have the soft reset overrides enabled. And according to
some docs by default the data lane resets are tied to cmnreset. So that
would mean that lanes would come out of reset without staggering as
soon as the power down overrides are removed. But since we can't access
either the lane stagger register nor the soft reset override registers
until the lanes are powered on, we can't really do anything about it.
So let's just set the soft reset overrides as soon as the lane is

of the data lanes get powered up. But when we're driving port B with
pipe B we don't want to enabled any of the data lanes, and just want
the DPLL in the common lane to be active.
To make that happens we have to temporarily enable some data lanes
after which we can access the DPLL registers in the common lane. Once
the pipe is up and running we can drop the power override on the data
lanes allowing them to shut down. From this point forward the common
lane will in fact stay powered on until the data lanes in the other
channel get powered down.

Port B is in the first PHY channel which also houses CL1. CL1 always
powers up whenever any lanes in either PHY channel are powered up.
CL2 only powers up if lanes in the second channel (ie. the one with
port C) powers up.
So in this scenario (pipe B->port B) we want the DPLL from CL2, but
ideally we only want to power up the lanes for port B. Powering up
port B lanes will only power up CL1, but as we need CL2 instead we
need to, temporarily, power up some lanes in port C as well.
Crossing the streams the other way (pipe A->port C) is not a problem
since CL1 powers up whenever anything else powers up. So powering up
some port C lanes is enough on its own to make the CL1 DPLL
operational, even though CL1 and the lanes live in separate channels.

Powergate the PHY lanes when they're not needed. For HDMI all four lanes
are needed always, but for DP we can enable only the needed lanes. To
power down the unused lanes we use some power down override bits in the
DISPLAY_PHY_CONTROL register. Without the overrides it appears that the
hardware always powers on all the lanes. When the port is disabled the
power down override is not needed and the lanes will shut off on their
own. That also means the override is critical to actually be able to
access the DPIO registers before the port is actually enabled.
Additionally the common lanes will power down when not needed. CL1
remains on as long as anything else is on, CL2 will shut down when
all the lanes in the same channel will shut down. There is one exception
for CL2 that will be dealt in a separate patch for clarity.
With potentially some lanes powered down, the DP code now has to check
the number of active lanes before accessing PCS/TX registers. All
registers in powered down blocks will reads as 0xffffffff, and soe we
would drown in warnings from vlv_dpio_read() if we allowed the code
to access all those registers.
Another important detail in the DP code is the "TX latency optimal"
setting. Normally the second TX lane acts as some kind of reset master,
with the other lanes as slaves. But when only a single lane is enabled,
that single lane obviously has to be the master.
A bit of extra care is needed to reconstruct the initial state of the
DISPLAY_PHY_CONTROL register since it can't be read safely. So instead
read the actual lane status from the DPLL/PHY_STATUS registers and
use that to determine which lanes ought to be powergated initially.
We also need to switch the PHY power modes to "deep PSR" to avoid
a hard system hang when powering down the single channel PHY.
Also sprinkle a few debug prints around so that we can monitor the
DISPLAY_PHY_STATUS changes without having to read it and risk
corrupting it.
v2: Add locking to chv_powergate_phy_lanes()
v3: Actually enable dynamic powerdown in the PHY and deal with the
fallout

BXT platform uses live status bits from 0x44440 register to obtain DP
status on hotplug. The existing g4x_digital_port_connected() uses a
different register and hence misses DP hotplug events on BXT
platform. This patch fixes it by using the appropriate register(0x44440)
and live status bits(3:5).

Move the CHV clock buffer disable from chv_disable_pll() to the new

With MST there won't be a crtc assigned to the main link encoder, so
trying to dig up the pipe_config from there is a recipe for an oops.
Instead store the parameters (lane_count and link_rate) in the encoder,
and use those values during link training etc. Since those parameters
are now assigned only when the link is actually enabled,
.compute_config() won't clobber them as it did before.
Hardware state readout is still bonkers though as we don't transfer the
link parameters from pipe_config intel_dp. We should do that during
encoder sanitation. But since we don't even do a proper job of reading
out the main link encoder state for MST there's littel point in
worrying about this now.
