The specifications from [1] about the "REMOVE" command say:
Announce that an address has been lost to the peer
It was then only supposed to send a RM_ADDR and not trying to delete
associated subflows.
A new helper mptcp_pm_remove_addrs() is then introduced to do just
that, compared to mptcp_pm_remove_addrs_and_subflows() also removing
subflows.
To delete a subflow, the userspace daemon can use the "SUB_DESTROY"
command, see mptcp_nl_cmd_sf_destroy().

Such code path acquires two separates, nested socket lock, with the

For consistency, in mptcp_pm_nl_create_listen_socket(), we need to
call the __mptcp_nmpc_socket() under the msk socket lock.
Note that as a side effect, mptcp_subflow_create_socket() needs a
'nested' lockdep annotation, as it will acquire the subflow (kernel)

The current lack of locking is almost harmless, because the relevant

Currently the in-kernel PM arbitrary enforces that created subflow's
family must match the main MPTCP socket while the RFC allows mixing
IPv4 and IPv6 subflows.
This patch changes the in-kernel PM logic to create subflows matching
the currently selected source (or destination) address. IPv4 sockets
can pick only IPv4 addresses (and v4 mapped in v6), while IPv6 sockets
not restricted to V6ONLY can pick either IPv4 and IPv6 addresses as
long as the source and destination matches.
A helper, previously introduced is used to ease family matching checks,
taking care of IPv4 vs IPv4-mapped-IPv6 vs IPv6 only addresses.

the msk socket lock and the PM lock when possibly changing the "backup"

By pushing the PM lock to where it is needed in mptcp_pm_nl_fullmesh(),
the lock is only acquired when the fullmesh flag is changed and the
backup flag code no longer has to release and reacquire the PM lock. The
change in locking context requires the MIB update to be modified - move

addrs announced by userspace PM implementations to/from its kernel

provided), 2) retrieving the local id associated with an address,
and also where one may need to be assigned, and 3) reissuance of
ADD_ADDRs when there's a successful match of addr/id.
The list of all stored local addr entries is held under the

Define a new endpoint flag to mark implicit endpoints and allow the

The in-kernel MPTCP path manager, when processing the MPTCP_PM_CMD_FLUSH_ADDR
command, generates RM_ADDR events for each known local address. While that
is allowed by the RFC, it makes unpredictable the exact number of RM_ADDR
generated when both ends flush the PM addresses.
This change restricts the RM_ADDR generation to previously explicitly
announced addresses, and adjust the expected results in a bunch of related
self-tests.

ADD_ADDR options, mptcp_pm_add_addr_received() can overwrite
the current remote address value after the PM lock is released
in mptcp_pm_nl_add_addr_received() and before such address

Fix the issue caching the remote address value a little earlier

After commit a88c9e4969 ("mptcp: do not block subflows
creation on errors"), if a signal address races with a failing
subflow creation, the subflow creation failure control path
can trigger the selection of the next address to be announced
while the current announced is still pending.
The above will cause the unintended suppression of the ADD_ADDR
announce.
Fix the issue skipping the to-be-suppressed announce before it
will mark an endpoint as already used. The relevant announce
will be triggered again when the current one will complete.

We can simplify the join list handling leveraging the
mptcp_release_cb(): if we can acquire the msk socket
lock at mptcp_finish_join time, move the new subflow
directly into the conn_list, otherwise place it on join_list and
let the release_cb process such list.
Since pending MPJ connection are now always processed
in a timely way, we can avoid flushing the join list
every time we have to process all the current subflows.
Additionally we can now use the mptcp data lock to protect
the join_list, removing the additional spin lock.
Finally, the MPJ handshake is now always finalized under the
msk socket lock, we can drop the additional synchronization

Include into the path manager status a bitmap tracking the list
of local endpoints still available - not yet used - for the
relevant mptcp socket.
Keep such map updated at endpoint creation/deletion time, so
that we can easily skip already used endpoint at local address
selection time.
The endpoint used by the initial subflow is lazyly accounted at
subflow creation time: the usage bitmap is be up2date before
endpoint selection and we avoid such unneeded task in some relevant
scenarios - e.g. busy servers accepting incoming subflows but
not creating any additional ones nor annuncing additional addresses.
Overall this allows for fair local endpoints usage in case of

The msk can use backup subflows to transmit in-sequence data
only if there are no other active subflow. On active backup
scenario, the MPTCP connection can do forward progress only
due to MPTCP retransmissions - rtx can pick backup subflows.
This patch introduces a new flag flow MPTCP subflows: if the
underlying TCP connection made no progresses for long time,
and there are other less problematic subflows available, the
given subflow become stale.
Stale subflows are not considered active: if all non backup
subflows become stale, the MPTCP scheduler can pick backup
subflows for plain transmissions.
Stale subflows can return in active state, as soon as any reply
from the peer is observed.
Active backup scenarios can now leverage the available b/w
with no restrinction.

when Linux receives an echo-ed ADD_ADDR, it checks the IP address against

This patch added a new helper named lookup_subflow_by_daddr to find
whether the destination address is in the msk's conn_list.
In mptcp_pm_nl_add_addr_received, use lookup_subflow_by_daddr to check
whether the announced address is already connected. If it is, skip
connecting this address and send out the echo.

Drop the redundant argument 'port' from mptcp_pm_announce_addr, use the
port field of another argument 'addr' instead.

This patch invoked mptcp_nl_remove_addrs_list to remove a list of addresses
when the netlink flushes addresses, instead of using
mptcp_nl_remove_subflow_and_signal_addr to remove them one by one.
And dropped the unused parameter net in __flush_addrs too.

This patch implemented the function to remove a list of addresses and
subflows, named mptcp_nl_remove_addrs_list, which had a input parameter
rm_list as the removing addresses list.
In mptcp_nl_remove_addrs_list, traverse all the existing msk sockets to
invoke mptcp_pm_remove_addrs_and_subflows to remove a list of addresses
for each msk socket.
In mptcp_pm_remove_addrs_and_subflows, traverse all the addresses in the
removing addresses list, to find whether this address is in the conn_list
or anno_list. If it is, put the address ID into the removing address list
or the removing subflow list, and pass the two lists to
mptcp_pm_remove_addr and mptcp_pm_remove_subflow.

This patch dealt with removing multi subflows in PM:
In mptcp_pm_remove_subflow, changed the input parameter local_id as an
list of removing address ids, and passed the list to
mptcp_pm_nl_rm_subflow_received.
In mptcp_pm_nl_rm_subflow_received, iterated each address id from the
received ids list. Then shut down and closed each address id's subsocket.
In mptcp_nl_remove_subflow_and_signal_addr, put the single address id into
an ids list, and passed it to mptcp_pm_remove_subflow.
