Takashi Iwai 313c7e5703 ALSA: echoaudio: Fix the missing snd_card_free() call at probe error
The previous cleanup with devres may lead to the incorrect release
orders at the probe error handling due to the devres's nature.  Until
we register the card, snd_card_free() has to be called at first for
releasing the stuff properly when the driver tries to manage and
release the stuff via card->private_free().

This patch fixes it by calling snd_card_free() on the error from the
probe callback using a new helper function.

Takashi Iwai 9c211bf392 ALSA: echoaudio: Allocate resources with device-managed APIs
This patch converts the resource management in PCI echoaudio drivers
with devres as a clean up.  Each manual resource management is
converted with the corresponding devres helper, the page allocations
are done with the devres helper, and the card object release is
managed now via card->private_free instead of a lowlevel snd_device.
The irq handler is still managed manually because it's re-acquired at
PM suspend/resume.

This should give no user-visible functional changes.

Leon Romanovsky 6417f03132 module: remove never implemented MODULE_SUPPORTED_DEVICE
MODULE_SUPPORTED_DEVICE was added in pre-git era and never was
implemented. We can safely remove it, because the kernel has grown
to have many more reliable mechanisms to determine if device is
supported or not.

Takashi Iwai 85cb905d3c ALSA: echoaduio: Drop superfluous volatile modifier
The dsp_registers field of struct echoaduio has the volatile modifier,
but it's basically superfluous; the field is accessed only for the
base pointer of readl() and writel(), hence marking with __iomem alone
should suffice.  OTOH, having the volatile prefix causes a compile
warning like:
  sound/pci/echoaudio/echoaudio.c:1878:14: warning: passing argument 1 of 'iounmap' discards 'volatile' qualifier from pointer target type [-Wdiscarded-qualifiers]

So it's better to drop this superfluous modifier.

Mark Hills a0b224b90b ALSA: echoaudio: Address bugs in the interrupt handling
Distorted audio appears occasionally, affecting either playback or
capture and requiring the affected substream to be closed by all
applications and re-opened.

The best way I have found to reproduce the bug is to use dmix in
combination with Chromium, which opens the audio device multiple times
in threads. Anecdotally, the problems appear to have increased with
faster CPUs. I ruled out 32-bit counter wrapping; it often happens
much earlier.

Since applying this patch I have not had problems, where previously
they would occur several times a day.

The patch targets the following issues:

* Check for progress using the counter from the hardware, not after it
  has been truncated to the buffer.

  This is a clean way to address a possible bug where if a whole
  ringbuffer advances between interrupts, it goes unnoticed.

* Move last_period state from chip to pipe

  This more logically belongs as part of pipe, and code is reasier to
  read if it is "counter position last time a period elapsed".

  Now the code has no references to period count. A period is just
  when the regular counter crosses a threshold. This increases
  readability and reduces scope for bugs.

* Treat period notification and buffer advance independently:

  This helps to clarify what is the responsibility of the interrupt
  handler, and what is pcm_pointer().

  Removing shared state between these operations means race conditions
  are fixed without introducing locks. Synchronisation is only around
  the read of pipe->dma_counter. There may be cache line contention
  around "struct audiopipe" but I did not have cause to profile this.

Pay attention to be robust where dma_counter wrapping is not a
multiple of period_size or buffer_size.

This is a revised patch based on feedback from Takashi and Giuliano.

Use of atomics does not make these statements robust:

       atomic_inc(&chip->opencount);
       if (atomic_read(&chip->opencount) > 1 && chip->rate_set)
               chip->can_set_rate=0;

and

               if (chip->opencount) {
                       changed = -EAGAIN;
               } else {
                       changed = set_digital_mode(chip, dmode);

It would be necessary to atomically increment or decrement the value
and use the returned result. And yet we still need to prevent other
threads making use of "can_set_rate" while we set it.

However in all but one case the atomic is misleading as they are already
running with "mode_mutex" held.

Decisions are made on mode setting are often intrinsically connected
to "opencount" because some operations are not permitted unless
there is sole ownership.

So instead simplify this, and use "mode_mutex" as a lock for all reference
counting and mode setting.

In a couple of years ago, 'echomixer' userspace application was revised
not to use 'dimen' member of 'struct snd_ctl_elem_info'.

This commit removes usage of 'dimen' member from echoaudio PCI driver so
that no implementation uses the member.

The driver invokes snd_pcm_period_elapsed() simply from the interrupt
handler.  Set card->sync_irq for enabling the missing sync_stop PCM
operation.  It's cleared and reset dynamically at IRQ re-acquiring for

Takashi Iwai 16ccca1108 ALSA: pci: Drop superfluous snd_pcm_sgbuf_ops_page
snd_pcm_sgbuf_ops_page is no longer needed to be set explicitly to PCM
page ops since the recent change in the PCM core (*).  Leaving it NULL
should work as long as the preallocation has been done properly.

Takashi Iwai afe5da3eba ALSA: echoaudio: Drop superfluous macro
Drop pci_device() macro that just leads to chip->pci->dev, and pass it
directly to request_firmware().  It was introduced for allowing the
external alsa-driver kernel module builds.  Since it was discontinued
years ago, we should clean it up now.

Colin Ian King 0bc66fd3b6 ALSA: echoaudio: remove redundant initialization of pointer 'pipe'
The pointer 'pipe' is being initialized with a value that is never
read and it is re-assigned later, hence the initialization is redundant
and can be removed. Also remove pointer 'runtime' as it is no longer
required.

Takashi Sakamoto 51db452df0 Revert "ALSA: echoaudio: purge contradictions between dimension matrix members and total number of members"
This reverts commit 275353bb68 to fix a regression which can abort
'alsactl' program in alsa-utils due to assertion in alsa-lib.

alsactl: control.c:2513: snd_ctl_elem_value_get_integer: Assertion `idx < sizeof(obj->value.integer.value) / sizeof(obj->value.integer.value[0])' failed.

alsactl: control.c:2976: snd_ctl_elem_value_get_integer: Assertion `idx < ARRAY_SIZE(obj->value.integer.value)' failed.

This commit is a band-aid. In a point of usage of ALSA control interface,
the drivers still bring an issue that they prevent userspace applications
to have a consistent way to parse each levels of the dimension information
via ALSA control interface.

Let me investigate this issue. Current implementation of the drivers
have three control element sets with dimension information:
 * 'Monitor Mixer Volume' (type: integer)
 * 'VMixer Volume' (type: integer)
 * 'VU-meters' (type: boolean)

Although the number of elements named as 'Monitor Mixer Volume' differs
depending on drivers in this group, it can be calculated by macros
defined by each driver (= (BX_NUM - BX_ANALOG_IN) * BX_ANALOG_IN). Each
of the elements has one member for value and has dimension information
with 2 levels (= BX_ANALOG_IN * (BX_NUM - BX_ANALOG_IN)). For these
elements, userspace applications are expected to handle the dimension
information so that all of the elements construct a matrix where the
number of rows and columns are represented by the dimension information.

The same way is applied to elements named as 'VMixer Volume'. The number
of these elements can also be calculated by macros defined by each
drivers (= PX_ANALOG_IN * BX_ANALOG_IN). Each of the element has one
member for value and has dimension information with 2 levels
(= BX_ANALOG_IN * PX_ANALOG_IN). All of the elements construct a matrix
with the dimension information.

An element named as 'VU-meters' gets a different way in a point of
dimension information. The element includes 96 members for value. The
element has dimension information with 3 levels (= 3 or 2 * 16 * 2). For
this element, userspace applications are expected to handle the dimension
information so that all of the members for value construct a matrix
where the number of rows and columns are represented by the dimension
information. This is different from the way for the former.

As a summary, the drivers were not designed to produce a consistent way to
parse the dimension information. This makes it hard for general userspace
applications such as amixer to parse the information by a consistent way,
and actually no userspace applications except for 'echomixer' utilize the
dimension information. Additionally, no drivers excluding this group use
the information.

The reverted commit was written based on the latter way. A commit
860c1994a7 ('ALSA: control: add dimension validator for userspace
elements') is written based on the latter way, too. The patch should be
reconsider too in the same time to re-define a consistent way to parse the
dimension information.

Takashi Sakamoto 275353bb68 ALSA: echoaudio: purge contradictions between dimension matrix members and total number of members
Currently, sound device drivers for PCI cards produced by Echo Audio
support dimension parameter of element information. But the information
has contradictions to the number of members of each element. I guess that
this comes from the assumption that these sound cards are used only by
'echomixer' in userspace. But ideally, they should be used with usual ALSA
control applications.

This commit removes the contradiction. As a result, 'Monitor Mixer Volume'
and 'VMixer Volume' elements are shown in usual ALSA control applications
such as 'amixer' and 'alsamixer' in series.

Christophe JAILLET 9c6795a9b3 ALSA: echoaudio: Fix memory allocation
'commpage_bak' is allocated with 'sizeof(struct echoaudio)' bytes.
We then copy 'sizeof(struct comm_page)' bytes in it.
On my system, smatch complains because one is 2960 and the other is 3072.

This would result in memory corruption or a oops.

Mark Brown 3f6175ece9 ALSA: echoaudio: Use standard C definitions of true and false
The echoaudio locally defines TRUE and FALSE.  Not only is this
redundant given that C now has a boolean type it results in lots of
warnings as other headers also define these macros, causing duplicate
definitions.  Fix this by removing the local defines and converting all
local users to use the standard C true and false instead, simply
removing the macros is less safe due to implicit inclusion of the other
definitons.

Dan Carpenter 77008b70fe ALSA: echoaudio: read past end of array
We need to cap "ucontrol->id.index / num_busses_in(chip)" so the we
don't read beyond the end of the array.

I also adding a check on "in" and changing the type in
snd_echo_mixer_put() from short to unsigned int. Those changes are done
for symmetry and are cosmetic.

This is a similar cleanup like the commit [3db084fd0af5: ALSA: fm801:
PCI core handles power state for us].

Since pci_set_power_state(), pci_save_state() and pci_restore_state()
are already done in the PCI core side, so we don't need to it doubly.

Also, pci_enable_device(), pci_disable_device() and pci_set_master()
calls in PM callbacks are superfluous nowadays, too, so get rid of
them as well.

Sudip Mukherjee 9161bd0d1c ALSA: echoaudio: cleanup of unnecessary messages
commit "b5b4a41b392960010fccf1f9ccf8334d612bd450" was dereferencing
chip after it has been freed. This patch fixes that and at the same
time removes some debugging messages, which are unnecessary, as they
are just printing information about entry and exit from a function,
and which switch-case it is executing.
we can easily get from ftrace the information about the entry and exit
from a function.
