The naming of pgtable_page_{ctor,dtor}() seems to have confused a few
people, and until recently arm64 used these erroneously/pointlessly for
other levels of page table.
To make it incredibly clear that these only apply to the PTE level, and to
align with the naming of pgtable_pmd_page_{ctor,dtor}(), let's rename them
to pgtable_pte_page_{ctor,dtor}().
These changes were generated with the following shell script:

Both pgtable_cache_init() and pgd_cache_init() are used to initialize kmem
cache for page table allocations on several architectures that do not use
PAGE_SIZE tables for one or more levels of the page table hierarchy.
Most architectures do not implement these functions and use __weak default
NOP implementation of pgd_cache_init(). Since there is no such default
for pgtable_cache_init(), its empty stub is duplicated among most
architectures.
Rename the definitions of pgd_cache_init() to pgtable_cache_init() and
drop empty stubs of pgtable_cache_init().

Remove page table allocator "quicklists". These have been around for a
long time, but have not got much traction in the last decade and are only
used on ia64 and sh architectures.
The numbers in the initial commit look interesting but probably don't
apply anymore. If anybody wants to resurrect this it's in the git
history, but it's unhelpful to have this code and divergent allocator
behaviour for minor archs.
Also it might be better to instead make more general improvements to page
allocator if this is still so slow.

I can't see why this file includes <linux/gpio.h>, it is not
using any of the interfaces. Lots of things are named "gpio"

Replace __get_free_page() and alloc_pages() calls with the generic
__pte_alloc_one_kernel() and __pte_alloc_one().
There is no functional change for the kernel PTE allocation.
The difference for the user PTEs, is that the clear_pte_table() is now
called after pgtable_page_ctor() and the addition of __GFP_ACCOUNT to the
GFP flags.
The pte_free() and pte_free_kernel() versions are identical to the generic
ones and can be simply dropped.

The RISC-V architecture has a register named the "Supervisor Exception
Program Counter", or "sepc". This abbreviation triggers checkpatch.pl's
misspelling detector, resulting in noise in the checkpatch output. The
risk that this noise could cause more useful warnings to be missed seems
to outweigh the harm of an occasional misspelling of "spec". Thus drop
the "sepc" entry from the misspelling list.

"A source of error over the years has been that force_sig has taken a
task parameter when it is only safe to use force_sig with the current
task.
The force_sig function is built for delivering synchronous signals
such as SIGSEGV where the userspace application caused a synchronous
fault (such as a page fault) and the kernel responded with a signal.
Because the name force_sig does not make this clear, and because the
force_sig takes a task parameter the function force_sig has been
abused for sending other kinds of signals over the years. Slowly those
have been fixed when the oopses have been tracked down.
This set of changes fixes the remaining abusers of force_sig and
carefully rips out the task parameter from force_sig and friends
making this kind of error almost impossible in the future"

As synchronous exceptions really only make sense against the current
task (otherwise how are you synchronous) remove the task parameter
from from force_sig_fault to make it explicit that is what is going
on.
The two known exceptions that deliver a synchronous exception to a
stopped ptraced task have already been changed to
force_sig_fault_to_task.
The callers have been changed with the following emacs regular expression

Patch series "provide a generic free_initmem implementation", v2.
Many architectures implement free_initmem() in exactly the same or very
similar way: they wrap the call to free_initmem_default() with sometimes
different 'poison' parameter.
These patches switch those architectures to use a generic implementation
that does free_initmem_default(POISON_FREE_INITMEM).
This was inspired by Christoph's patches for free_initrd_mem [1] and I
shamelessly copied changelog entries from his patches :)

This is a bit of a mess, to put it mildly. But, it's a bug
that only seems to have showed up in 4.20 but wasn't noticed
until now, because nobody uses MPX.
MPX has the arch_unmap() hook inside of munmap() because MPX
uses bounds tables that protect other areas of memory. When
memory is unmapped, there is also a need to unmap the MPX
bounds tables. Barring this, unused bounds tables can eat 80%
of the address space.
But, the recursive do_munmap() that gets called vi arch_unmap()
wreaks havoc with __do_munmap()'s state. It can result in
freeing populated page tables, accessing bogus VMA state,
double-freed VMAs and more.
See the "long story" further below for the gory details.
To fix this, call arch_unmap() before __do_unmap() has a chance
to do anything meaningful. Also, remove the 'vma' argument
and force the MPX code to do its own, independent VMA lookup.
== UML / unicore32 impact ==
Remove unused 'vma' argument to arch_unmap(). No functional
change.
I compile tested this on UML but not unicore32.
== powerpc impact ==
powerpc uses arch_unmap() well to watch for munmap() on the
VDSO and zeroes out 'current->mm->context.vdso_base'. Moving
arch_unmap() makes this happen earlier in __do_munmap(). But,
'vdso_base' seems to only be used in perf and in the signal
delivery that happens near the return to userspace. I can not
find any likely impact to powerpc, other than the zeroing
happening a little earlier.
powerpc does not use the 'vma' argument and is unaffected by
its removal.
I compile-tested a 64-bit powerpc defconfig.
== x86 impact ==
For the common success case this is functionally identical to
what was there before. For the munmap() failure case, it's
possible that some MPX tables will be zapped for memory that
continues to be in use. But, this is an extraordinarily
unlikely scenario and the harm would be that MPX provides no
protection since the bounds table got reset (zeroed).
I can't imagine anyone doing this:

Because if you're doing munmap(), you are *done* with the
memory. There's probably no good data in there _anyway_.
This passes the original reproducer from Richard Biener as
well as the existing mpx selftests/.
The long story:
munmap() has a couple of pieces:
1. Find the affected VMA(s)
2. Split the start/end one(s) if neceesary
3. Pull the VMAs out of the rbtree
4. Actually zap the memory via unmap_region(), including
freeing page tables (or queueing them to be freed).
5. Fix up some of the accounting (like fput()) and actually
free the VMA itself.
This specific ordering was actually introduced by:
dd2283f260 ("mm: mmap: zap pages with read mmap_sem in munmap")
during the 4.20 merge window. The previous __do_munmap() code
was actually safe because the only thing after arch_unmap() was
remove_vma_list(). arch_unmap() could not see 'vma' in the
rbtree because it was detached, so it is not even capable of
doing operations unsafe for remove_vma_list()'s use of 'vma'.
Richard Biener reported a test that shows this in dmesg:

What triggered this was the recursive do_munmap() called via
arch_unmap(). It was freeing page tables that has not been
properly zapped.
But, the problem was bigger than this. For one, arch_unmap()
can free VMAs. But, the calling __do_munmap() has variables
that *point* to VMAs and obviously can't handle them just
getting freed while the pointer is still in use.
I tried a couple of things here. First, I tried to fix the page
table freeing problem in isolation, but I then found the VMA
issue. I also tried having the MPX code return a flag if it
modified the rbtree which would force __do_munmap() to re-walk
to restart. That spiralled out of control in complexity pretty
fast.
Just moving arch_unmap() and accepting that the bonkers failure
case might eat some bounds tables seems like the simplest viable
fix.

weirdnesses, and we all know how such stories of crummy kernel code
meeting German engineering perfection end: a 45-patch series to clean
it all up! :-)
Here's the changes in Thomas's words:
'Struct stack_trace is a sinkhole for input and output parameters
which is largely pointless for most usage sites. In fact if embedded
into other data structures it creates indirections and extra storage
overhead for no benefit.
Looking at all usage sites makes it clear that they just require an
interface which is based on a storage array. That array is either on
stack, global or embedded into some other data structure.
Some of the stack depot usage sites are outright wrong, but
fortunately the wrongness just causes more stack being used for
nothing and does not have functional impact.
Another oddity is the inconsistent termination of the stack trace
with ULONG_MAX. It's pointless as the number of entries is what
determines the length of the stored trace. In fact quite some call
sites remove the ULONG_MAX marker afterwards with or without nasty
comments about it. Not all architectures do that and those which do,
do it inconsistenly either conditional on nr_entries == 0 or
unconditionally.
The following series cleans that up by:
1) Removing the ULONG_MAX termination in the architecture code
2) Removing the ULONG_MAX fixups at the call sites
3) Providing plain storage array based interfaces for stacktrace
and stackdepot.
4) Cleaning up the mess at the callsites including some related
cleanups.
5) Removing the struct stack_trace based interfaces
This is not changing the struct stack_trace interfaces at the
architecture level, but it removes the exposure to the generic

The module support for the thermal subsystem makes little sense:
- some subsystems relying on it are not modules, thus forcing the
framework to be compiled in
- it is compiled in for almost every configs, the remaining ones
are a few platforms where I don't see why we can not switch the thermal
to 'y'. The drivers can stay in tristate.
- platforms need the thermal to be ready as soon as possible at boot time
in order to mitigate
Usually the subsystems framework are compiled-in and the plugs are as
module.
Remove the module option. The removal of the module related dead code will
come after this patch gets in or is acked.

A few architectures use <asm/segment.h> internally, but nothing in
common code does. Remove all the empty or almost empty versions of it,
including the asm-generic one.

Terminating the last trace entry with ULONG_MAX is a completely pointless
exercise and none of the consumers can rely on it because it's
inconsistently implemented across architectures. In fact quite some of the
callers remove the entry and adjust stack_trace.nr_entries afterwards.

Currently, we have two different implementation of rwsem:
1) CONFIG_RWSEM_GENERIC_SPINLOCK (rwsem-spinlock.c)
2) CONFIG_RWSEM_XCHGADD_ALGORITHM (rwsem-xadd.c)
As we are going to use a single generic implementation for rwsem-xadd.c
and no architecture-specific code will be needed, there is no point
in keeping two different implementations of rwsem. In most cases, the
performance of rwsem-spinlock.c will be worse. It also doesn't get all
the performance tuning and optimizations that had been implemented in
rwsem-xadd.c over the years.
For simplication, we are going to remove rwsem-spinlock.c and make all
architectures use a single implementation of rwsem - rwsem-xadd.c.
All references to RWSEM_GENERIC_SPINLOCK and RWSEM_XCHGADD_ALGORITHM
in the code are removed.

We have two *_CLASS_DEVICE kernel config options (LCD_CLASS_DEVICE
and BACKLIGHT_LCD_DEVICE) that do the same job.
The patch removes useless BACKLIGHT_LCD_SUPPORT option
and converts LCD_CLASS_DEVICE into a menu.

For the architectures that do not implement their own tlb_flush() but
do already use the generic mmu_gather, there are two options:
1) the platform has an efficient flush_tlb_range() and
asm-generic/tlb.h doesn't need any overrides at all.
2) the platform lacks an efficient flush_tlb_range() and
we select MMU_GATHER_NO_RANGE to minimize full invalidates.
Convert all 'simple' architectures to one of these two forms.
alpha: has no range invalidate -> 2
arc: already used flush_tlb_range() -> 1
c6x: has no range invalidate -> 2
hexagon: has an efficient flush_tlb_range() -> 1
(flush_tlb_mm() is in fact a full range invalidate,
so no need to shoot down everything)
m68k: has inefficient flush_tlb_range() -> 2
microblaze: has no flush_tlb_range() -> 2
mips: has efficient flush_tlb_range() -> 1
(even though it currently seems to use flush_tlb_mm())
nds32: already uses flush_tlb_range() -> 1
nios2: has inefficient flush_tlb_range() -> 2
(no limit on range iteration)
openrisc: has inefficient flush_tlb_range() -> 2
(no limit on range iteration)
parisc: already uses flush_tlb_range() -> 1
sparc32: already uses flush_tlb_range() -> 1
unicore32: has inefficient flush_tlb_range() -> 2
(no limit on range iteration)
xtensa: has efficient flush_tlb_range() -> 1
Note this also fixes a bug in the existing code for a number
platforms. Those platforms that did:
tlb_end_vma() -> if (!full_mm) flush_tlb_*()
tlb_flush -> if (full_mm) flush_tlb_mm()
missed the case of shift_arg_pages(), which doesn't have @fullmm set,
nor calls into tlb_*vma(), but still frees page-tables and thus needs
an invalidate. The new code handles this by detecting a non-empty
range, and either issuing the matching range invalidate or a full
invalidate, depending on the capabilities.
No change in behavior intended.

I do not see any consistency about headers_install of <linux/kvm_para.h>
and <asm/kvm_para.h>.
According to my analysis of Linux 5.1-rc1, there are 3 groups:
[1] Both <linux/kvm_para.h> and <asm/kvm_para.h> are exported
alpha, arm, hexagon, mips, powerpc, s390, sparc, x86
[2] <asm/kvm_para.h> is exported, but <linux/kvm_para.h> is not
arc, arm64, c6x, h8300, ia64, m68k, microblaze, nios2, openrisc,
parisc, sh, unicore32, xtensa
[3] Neither <linux/kvm_para.h> nor <asm/kvm_para.h> is exported
csky, nds32, riscv
This does not match to the actual KVM support. At least, [2] is
half-baked.
Nor do arch maintainers look like they care about this. For example,
commit 0add53713b ("microblaze: Add missing kvm_para.h to Kbuild")
exported <asm/kvm_para.h> to user-space in order to fix an in-kernel
build error.
We have two ways to make this consistent:
[A] export both <linux/kvm_para.h> and <asm/kvm_para.h> for all
architectures, irrespective of the KVM support
[B] Match the header export of <linux/kvm_para.h> and <asm/kvm_para.h>
to the KVM support
My first attempt was [A] because the code looks cleaner, but Paolo
suggested [B].
So, this commit goes with [B].
For most architectures, <asm/kvm_para.h> was moved to the kernel-space.
I changed include/uapi/linux/Kbuild so that it checks generated
asm/kvm_para.h as well as check-in ones.
After this commit, there will be two groups:
[1] Both <linux/kvm_para.h> and <asm/kvm_para.h> are exported
arm, arm64, mips, powerpc, s390, x86
[2] Neither <linux/kvm_para.h> nor <asm/kvm_para.h> is exported
alpha, arc, c6x, csky, h8300, hexagon, ia64, m68k, microblaze,

syscall_get_arch() is required to be implemented on all architectures
in addition to already implemented syscall_get_nr(),
syscall_get_arguments(), syscall_get_error(), and
syscall_get_return_value() functions in order to extend the generic
ptrace API with PTRACE_GET_SYSCALL_INFO request.

This should never have been defined in the arch tree to begin with,
and now uapi/linux/audit.h header is going to use EM_UNICORE
in order to define AUDIT_ARCH_UNICORE which is needed to implement
syscall_get_arch() which in turn is required to extend
the generic ptrace API with PTRACE_GET_SYSCALL_INFO request.

Currently, every arch/*/include/uapi/asm/Kbuild explicitly includes
the common Kbuild.asm file. Factor out the duplicated include directives
to scripts/Makefile.asm-generic so that no architecture would opt out
of the mandatory-y mechanism.
um is not forced to include mandatory-y since it is a very exceptional
case which does not support UAPI.

When I was searching for unneeded $(KCONFIG_CONFIG) usages, I noticed
this strange build dependency.
It can use $(call if_changed,...) in case ZTEXTADDR and ZBSSADDR are
changed, but even a simpler way is to use the pattern rule in
scripts/Makefile.build. This is what arch/arm/boot/compressed/Makefile
does.
I did only build test. I confirmed equivalent vmlinux.lds was generated.
