drm_plane_init() (the legacy plane initialization function) takes a bool
as its final parameter; originally this indicated whether a plane was
'private' to the driver (before the DRM core understood non-overlay
planes), now it indicates whether the plane is a primary plane (private
planes were used by some drivers to represent primary planes
internally). The newer drm_universal_plane_init() take an 'enum
drm_plane_type' as its final parameter to allow the caller to specify
the specific plane type desired (primary, cursor, or overlay).
Due to a rebasing mistake, the primary plane helper is currently passing
DRM_PLANE_TYPE_PRIMARY (enum value = 1) for drm_plane_init()'s boolean
'is_primary' parameter. This winds up giving the correct behavior since
DRM_PLANE_TYPE_PRIMARY evaluates as true, but is confusing to anyone
reading the code since we're passing an enum value (one of three
possible values) for a boolean parameter.
Replace the primary plane helper's call to drm_plane_init() with
drm_universal_plane_init() so that the parameter and value types match
up as expected.

A few more fixes for 3.16. The pageflipping fixes I dropped last week
have finally shaped up so this is mostly fixes for fallout from the
pageflipping code changes. Also fix a memory leak and a black screen

* 'drm-fixes-3.16' of git://people.freedesktop.org/~agd5f/linux:
drm/radeon: Make classic pageflip completion path less racy.
drm/radeon: Add missing vblank_put in pageflip ioctl error path.
drm/radeon: Remove redundant fence unref in pageflip path.
drm/radeon: Complete page flip even if waiting on the BO fence fails
drm/radeon: Move pinning the BO back to radeon_crtc_page_flip()
drm/radeon: Prevent too early kms-pageflips triggered by vblank.
drm/radeon: set default bl level to something reasonable
drm/radeon: avoid leaking edid data
Need to protect mmio flip programming by event lock as well.
Need to also first enable pflip irq, then mmio program,
otherwise a flip completion may get unnoticed in the vblank
of actual completion if the flip is programmed, but
radeon_flip_work_func gets preempted immediately after
mmio programming and before vblank. In that case the
vblank irq handler wouldn't run radeon_crtc_handle_vblank()
with the completion check routine, miss the completed flip,
and only notice one vblank after actual completion, causing
a false/delayed report of flip completion.

Since 3.16-rc1 we have this new failure:
When the userspace XOrg ddx schedules vblank events to
trigger deferred kms-pageflips, e.g., via the OML_sync_control
extension call glXSwapBuffersMscOML(), or if a glXSwapBuffers()
is called immediately after completion of a previous swapbuffers
call, e.g., in a tight rendering loop with minimal rendering,
it happens frequently that the pageflip ioctl() is executed
within the same vblank in which a previous kms-pageflip completed,
or - for deferred swaps - always one vblank earlier than requested
by the client app.
This causes premature pageflips and detection of failure by
the ddx, e.g., XOrg log warnings like...
"(WW) RADEON(1): radeon_dri2_flip_event_handler: Pageflip
completion event has impossible msc 201025 < target_msc 201026"
... and error/invalid return values of glXWaitForSbcOML() and
Intel_swap_events extension.
Reason is the new way in which kms-pageflips are programmed
since 3.16.
This commit changes the time window in which the hw can
execute pending programmed pageflips. Before, a pending flip
would get executed anywhere within the vblank interval. Now
a pending flip only gets executed at the leading edge of
vblank (start of front porch), making sure that a invocation
of the pageflip ioctl() within a given vblank interval will
only lead to pageflip completion in the following vblank.

drm_rotation_simplify() can be used to eliminate unsupported rotation
flags. It will check if any unsupported flags are present, and if so
it will modify the rotation to an alternate form by adding 180 degrees

that this identity transform will eliminate the unsupported flags.
Of course that might not result in any more supported rotation, so

To make things a bit more manageable extract a new function for
reading out common ddi port state. This means a bit of duplication
between encoders and the core since both look at the same registers,
but doesn't seem worth to make a fuzz about.
We can also remove the state readout code in intel_ddi_setup_hw_pll_state.
That code is only called from the hardware take over and not the cross
check code, and only after the crtc state is reconstructed. So we can
rely on an accurate value of crtc->config.ddi_pll_sel already.
Compared to the old code also trust the hw state more and don't
special-case port A - we want to cross-check the actual-state, not
bake in our own assumptions about how this is supposed to all be
linked up.

Similar to how the ->crtc_mode_set hook should touch the hardware to
enable anything the ->crtc_off hook should disable anything in the
hardware. Otherwise runtime pm for dpms will not work.
Currently the only things left int the haswell_crtc_off hook is
disabling the ddi plls. We can't move the WRPLL enabling out yet
because the current ddi pll sharing code used by the haswell code
doesn't separately track active users and overall users. This must be
fixed by porting it to the generic shared display pll framework, which
is powerful enough.
But the SPLL source is only used by the crt encoder and so can be
moved already. We only need to make sure that the ddi port E is
already off, which hsw_fdi_disable does by calling
intel_ddi_post_disable.
With this the code reorg to shuffle hsw fdi/lpt specific code into a
new hsw-specific crt encoder type is now finally complete.

Then either the reinitialization of fbcon when i915 registers its

This also appears to be true (but not documented as so) for gen4 and

This is an Execlists preparatory patch, since they make context ID become an
overloaded term:
- In the software, it was used to distinguish which context userspace was
trying to use.
- In the BSpec, the term is used to describe the 20-bits long field the
hardware uses to it to discriminate the contexts that are submitted to
the ELSP and inform the driver about their current status (via Context
Switch Interrupts and Context Status Buffers).
Initially, I tried to make the different meanings converge, but it proved
impossible:
- The software ctx->id is per-filp, while the hardware one needs to be
globally unique.
- Also, we multiplex several backing states objects per intel_context,
and all of them need unique HW IDs.
- I tried adding a per-filp ID and then composing the HW context ID as:
ctx->id + file_priv->id + ring->id, but the fact that the hardware only
uses 20-bits means we have to artificially limit the number of filps or
contexts the userspace can create.
The ctx->user_handle renaming bits are done with this Cocci patch (plus
manual frobbing of the struct declaration):

A race condition currently exists on Tegra, where it can happen that a
monitor attached via HDMI isn't detected during the initial FB helper
setup, but the hotplug event happens too early to be processed by the
poll helpers because they haven't been initialized yet. This happens
because on some boards the HDMI driver can control the regulator that
supplies the +5V pin on the HDMI connector. Therefore depending on the
timing between the initialization of the HDMI driver and the rest of
DRM, it's possible that the monitor returns the hotplug signal right
within the window where we would miss it.
Unfortunately, drm_kms_helper_poll_init() will wreak havoc when called
before at least some parts of the FB helpers have been set up.
This commit fixes this by splitting out the minimum of initialization
required to make drm_kms_helper_poll_init() work into a separate
function that can be called early. It is then safe to move all of the
poll helper initialization to an earlier point in time (before the
HDMI output driver has a chance to enable the +5V supply). That way if
the hotplug signal is returned before the initial FB helper setup, the
monitor will be forcefully detected at that point, and if the hotplug
signal is returned after that it will be properly handled by the poll
helpers.

To implement hotplug detection in a race-free manner, drivers must call
drm_kms_helper_poll_init() before hotplug events can be triggered. Such
events can be triggered right after any of the encoders or connectors
are initialized. At the same time, if the drm_fb_helper_hotplug_event()
helper is used by a driver, then the poll helper requires some parts of
the FB helper to be initialized to prevent a crash.
At the same time, drm_fb_helper_init() requires information that is not
necessarily available at such an early stage (number of CRTCs and
connectors), so it cannot be used yet.
Add a new helper, drm_fb_helper_prepare(), that initializes the bare
minimum needed to allow drm_kms_helper_poll_init() to execute and any
subsequent hotplug events to be processed properly.

Some drivers need to be able to have a perfect race-free fbcon setup.
Current drivers only enable hotplug processing after the call to
drm_fb_helper_initial_config which leaves a tiny but important race.
This race is especially noticable on embedded platforms where the
driver itself enables the voltage for the hdmi output, since only then
will monitors (after a bit of delay, as usual) respond by asserting
the hpd pin.
Most of the infrastructure is already there with the split-out
drm_fb_helper_init. And drm_fb_helper_initial_config already has all
the required locking to handle concurrent hpd events since
commit 53f1904bce

Date: Thu Mar 20 14:26:35 2014 +0100
drm/fb-helper: improve drm_fb_helper_initial_config locking
The only missing bit is making drm_fb_helper_hotplug_event save
against concurrent calls of drm_fb_helper_initial_config. The only
unprotected bit is the check for fb_helper->fb.
With that drivers can first initialize the fb helper, then enabel
hotplug processing and then set up the initial config all in a
completely race-free manner. Update kerneldoc and convert i915 as a
proof of concept.
Feature requested by Thierry since his tegra driver atm reliably boots
slowly enough to misses the hotplug event for an external hdmi screen,
but also reliably boots to quickly for the hpd pin to be asserted when
the fb helper calls into the hdmi ->detect function.

The TI tilcdc driver is designed with a notion of submodules. Currently,
at unload time, these submodules are iterated and destroyed.
Now that the tilcdc remove order is fixed, this can be handled perfectly
by the kernel using the device infrastructure, since each submodule

drm_gem_get_pages() currently allows passing a 'gfp' parameter that is
passed to shmem combined with mapping_gfp_mask(). Given that the default
mapping_gfp_mask() is GFP_HIGHUSER, it is _very_ unlikely that anyone will
ever make use of that parameter. In fact, all drivers currently pass
redundant flags or 0.
This patch removes the 'gfp' parameter. The only reason to keep it is to
remove flags like __GFP_WAIT. But in its current form, it can only be used
to add flags. So to remove __GFP_WAIT, you'd have to drop it from the
mapping_gfp_mask, which again is stupid as this mask is used by shmem-core
for other allocations, too.
If any driver ever requires that parameter, we can introduce a new helper
that takes the raw 'gfp' parameter. The caller'd be responsible to combine
it with mapping_gfp_mask() in a suitable way. The current
drm_gem_get_pages() helper would then simply use mapping_gfp_mask() and
call the new helper. This is what shmem_read_mapping_pages{_gfp,} does
right now.
Moreover, the gfp-zone flag-usage is not obvious: If you pass a modified
zone, shmem core will WARN() or even BUG(). In other words, the following
must be true for 'gfp' passed to shmem_read_mapping_pages_gfp():
gfp_zone(mapping_gfp_mask(mapping)) == gfp_zone(gfp)
Add a comment to drm_gem_read_pages() explaining that constraint.
Signed-off-by: David Herrmann <dh.herrmann@gmail.com>
OMAP requires bo-pages to be in the DMA32 zone. Explicitly request this by
setting __GFP_DMA32 as mapping-gfp-mask during shmem initialization. This
drops HIGHMEM from the gfp-mask and uses DMA32 instead. shmem-core takes
care to relocate pages during swap-in in case they have been loaded into
the wrong zone.
It is _not_ possible to pass __GFP_DMA32 to shmem_read_mapping_page_gfp()
as the page might have already been swapped-in at that time. The zone-mask
must be set during initialization and be kept constant for now.
Remove the now superfluous TODO in omap_gem.c.

fixed VLV too.
In my case the problem seemed to happen already during the previous crtc
disabling and went away if I disabled self-refresh mode before disabling
the primary plane.
The root cause for this is that updates from the shadow to live plane
control register are blocked at vblank time if the memory self-refresh
mode (aka max-fifo mode on VLV) is active at that moment. The controller
checks at frame start time if the CPU is in C0 and the self-refresh mode
enable bit is set and if so activates self-reresh mode, otherwise
deactivates it. So to make sure that the plane truly gets disabled before
pipe-off we have to:
1. disable memory self-refresh mode
2. disable plane
3. wait for vblank
4. disable pipe
5. wait for pipe-off

The GEN FBC unit provides the ability to set a low pass on frames it
attempts to compress. If a frame is less than a certain amount
compressibility (2:1, 4:1) it will not bother. This allows the driver to
reduce the size it requests out of stolen memory.
Unluckily, a few months ago, Ville actually began using this feature for
framebuffers that are 16bpp (not sure why not 8bpp). In those cases, we

It is possible that, by the time we run i915_drm_freeze(),
delayed_resume_work was already queued but did not run yet. If it
still didn't run after intel_runtime_pm_disable_interrupts(), by the
time it runs it will try to change the interrupt registers with the
interrupts already disabled, which will trigger a WARN. We can
reliably reproduce this with the pm_rpm system-suspend test case.
In order to avoid the problem, we have to flush the work before
disabling the interrupts. We could also cancel the work instead of
flushing it, but that would require us to put a runtime PM reference -
and any other resource we may need in the future - in case the work
was already queued, so I believe flushing the work is more
future-proof, although less efficient. But I can also change this part
if someone requests.
Another thing I tried was to move the intel_suspend_gt_powersave()
call to before intel_runtime_pm_disable_interrupts(), but since that
function needs to be called after the interrupts are already disabled,
due to dev_priv->rps.work, this strategy didn't work.

BDW signals the flip done interrupt immediately after the DSPSURF write
when the plane is disabled. This is true even if we've already armed
DSPCNTR to enable the plane at the next vblank. This causes major
problems for our page flip code which relies on the flip done interrupts
happening at vblank time.
So what happens is that we enable the plane, and immediately allow
userspace to submit a page flip. If the plane is still in the process
of being enabled when the page flip is issued, the flip done gets
signalled immediately. Our DSPSURFLIVE check catches this to prevent
premature flip completion, but it also means that we don't get a flip
done interrupt when the plane actually gets enabled, and so the page
flip is never completed.
Work around this by re-introducing blocking vblank waits on BDW
whenever we enable the primary plane.
I removed some of the vblank waits here:
