Chris Wilson 9b6586ae9f drm/i915: Keep a global seqno per-engine
Replace the global device seqno with one for each engine, and account
for in-flight seqno on each separately. This is consistent with
dma-fence as each timeline has separate fence-contexts for each engine
and a seqno is only ordered within a fence-context (i.e. seqno do not
need to be ordered wrt to other engines, just ordered within a single
engine). This is required to enable request rewinding for preemption on
individual engines (we have to rewind the global seqno to avoid
overflow, and we do not have to rewind all engines just to preempt one.)

v2: Rename active_seqno to inflight_seqnos to more clearly indicate that
it is a counter and not equivalent to the existing seqno. Update
functions that operated on active_seqno similarly.

Chris Wilson 2246bea6cf drm/i915: Postpone fake breadcrumb interrupt until real interrupts cease
When the timer expires for checking on interrupt processing, check to
see if any interrupts arrived within the last time period. If real
interrupts are still being delivered, we can be reassured that we
haven't missed the final interrupt as the waiter will still be woken.
Only once all activity ceases, do we have to worry about the waiter
never being woken and so need to install a timer to kick the waiter for
a slow arrival of a seqno.

Tvrtko Ursulin 73dec95e6b drm/i915: Emit to ringbuffer directly
This removes the usage of intel_ring_emit in favour of
directly writing to the ring buffer.

intel_ring_emit was preventing the compiler for optimising
fetch and increment of the current ring buffer pointer and
therefore generating very verbose code for every write.

It had no useful purpose since all ringbuffer operations
are started and ended with intel_ring_begin and
intel_ring_advance respectively, with no bail out in the
middle possible, so it is fine to increment the tail in
intel_ring_begin and let the code manage the pointer
itself.

Useless instruction removal amounts to approximately
two and half kilobytes of saved text on my build.

Not sure if this has any measurable performance
implications but executing a ton of useless instructions
on fast paths cannot be good.

v2:
 * Change return from intel_ring_begin to error pointer by

Chris Wilson 2ffe80aa44 drm/i915: Avoid unguarded reads from the request pointer
In commit 86aa7e760a ("drm/i915: Assert that the context-switch
completion matches our context") I added a read to the irq tasklet
handler that compared the on-chip status with that of our sw tracking,
using an unguarded read of the request pointer to get the context and
beyond. Whilst we hold a reference to the request, we do not hold
anything on the context and if we are unlucky it may be reaped from a
second thread retiring the request (since it may retire the request as
soon as the breadcrumb is complete, even before we finish processing the
context switch) as we try to read from the context pointer.

Avoid the racy read from underneath the request by storing the expected
result in the execlist_port[].

v2: Include commentary about port[].request being unprotected.

Chris Wilson eca56a3511 drm/i915: Mark the end of intel_ring_begin() and check in intel_ring_advance()
It is required that the caller declare the exact number of dwords they
wish to write into the ring. This is required for two reasons, we need
to allocate sufficient space for the entire command packet and we need
to be sure that the contents are completely written to avoid executing
stale data. The current interface requires for any bug to be caught in
review, the reader has to carefully count the number of
intel_ring_emit() between intel_ring_begin() and intel_ring_advance().
If we record the end of the packet of each intel_ring_begin() we can
also have CI check for us.

Chris Wilson e8a9c58fcd drm/i915: Unify active context tracking between legacy/execlists/guc
The requests conversion introduced a nasty bug where we could generate a
new request in the middle of constructing a request if we needed to idle
the system in order to evict space for a context. The request to idle
would be executed (and waited upon) before the current one, creating a
minor havoc in the seqno accounting, as we will consider the current
request to already be completed (prior to deferred seqno assignment) but
ring->last_retired_head would have been updated and still could allow
us to overwrite the current request before execution.

We also employed two different mechanisms to track the active context
until it was switched out. The legacy method allowed for waiting upon an
active context (it could forcibly evict any vma, including context's),
but the execlists method took a step backwards by pinning the vma for
the entire active lifespan of the context (the only way to evict was to
idle the entire GPU, not individual contexts). However, to circumvent
the tricky issue of locking (i.e. we cannot take struct_mutex at the
time of i915_gem_request_submit(), where we would want to move the
previous context onto the active tracker and unpin it), we take the
execlists approach and keep the contexts pinned until retirement.
The benefit of the execlists approach, more important for execlists than
legacy, was the reduction in work in pinning the context for each
request - as the context was kept pinned until idle, it could short
circuit the pinning for all active contexts.

We introduce new engine vfuncs to pin and unpin the context
respectively. The context is pinned at the start of the request, and
only unpinned when the following request is retired (this ensures that
the context is idle and coherent in main memory before we unpin it). We
move the engine->last_context tracking into the retirement itself
(rather than during request submission) in order to allow the submission
to be reordered or unwound without undue difficultly.

And finally an ulterior motive for unifying context handling was to
prepare for mock requests.

v2: Rename to last_retired_context, split out legacy_context tracking
for MI_SET_CONTEXT.

Mika Kuoppala 3fe3b030bd drm/i915: Decouple hang detection from hangcheck period
Hangcheck state accumulation has gained more steps
along the years, like head movement and more recently the
subunit inactivity check. As the subunit sampling is only
done if the previous state check showed inactivity, we
have added more stages (and time) to reach a hang verdict.

Asymmetric engine states led to different actual weight of
'one hangcheck unit' and it was demonstrated in some
hangs that due to difference in stages, simpler engines
were accused falsely of a hang as their scoring was much
more quicker to accumulate above the hang treshold.

To completely decouple the hangcheck guilty score
from the hangcheck period, convert hangcheck score to a
rough period of inactivity measurement. As these are
tracked as jiffies, they are meaningful also across
reset boundaries. This makes finding a guilty engine
more accurate across multi engine activity scenarios,
especially across asymmetric engines.

We lose the ability to detect cross batch malicious attempts
to hinder the progress. Plan is to move this functionality
to be part of context banning which is more natural fit,
later in the series.

Chris Wilson 20311bd350 drm/i915/scheduler: Execute requests in order of priorities
Track the priority of each request and use it to determine the order in
which we submit requests to the hardware via execlists.

The priority of the request is determined by the user (eventually via
the context) but may be overridden at any time by the driver. When we set
the priority of the request, we bump the priority of all of its
dependencies to match - so that a high priority drawing operation is not
stuck behind a background task.

When the request is ready to execute (i.e. we have signaled the submit
fence following completion of all its dependencies, including third
party fences), we put the request into a priority sorted rbtree to be
submitted to the hardware. If the request is higher priority than all
pending requests, it will be submitted on the next context-switch
interrupt as soon as the hardware has completed the current request. We
do not currently preempt any current execution to immediately run a very
high priority request, at least not yet.

One more limitation, is that this is first implementation is for
execlists only so currently limited to gen8/gen9.

Chris Wilson 80b204bce8 drm/i915: Enable multiple timelines
With the infrastructure converted over to tracking multiple timelines in
the GEM API whilst preserving the efficiency of using a single execution
timeline internally, we can now assign a separate timeline to every
context with full-ppgtt.

v2: Add a comment to indicate the xfer between timelines upon submission.

Chris Wilson f6168e3304 drm/i915: Convert breadcrumbs spinlock to be irqsafe
The breadcrumbs are about to be used from within IRQ context sections
(e.g. nouveau signals a fence from an interrupt handler causing us to
submit a new request) and/or from bottom-half tasklets (i.e.
intel_lrc_irq_handler), therefore we need to employ the irqsafe spinlock
variants.

For example, deferring the request submission to the
intel_lrc_irq_handler generates this trace:

(This is split out of the defer global seqno allocation patch due to
realisation that we need a more complete conversion if we want to defer
request submission even further.)

v2: lockdep was warning about mixed SOFTIRQ contexts not HARDIRQ
contexts so we only need to use spin_lock_bh and not disable interrupts.

v3: We need full irq protection as we may be called from a third party
interrupt handler (via fences).

Chris Wilson caddfe7192 drm/i915: Defer breadcrumb emission
Move the actual emission of the breadcrumb for closing the request from
i915_add_request() to the submit callback. (It can be moved later when
required.) This allows us to defer the allocation of the global_seqno
from request construction to actual submission, allowing us to emit the
requests out of order (wrt to the order of their construction, they
still will only be executed one all of their dependencies are resolved
including that all earlier requests on their timeline have been
submitted.) We have to specialise how we then emit the request in order
to write into the preallocated space, rather than at the tail of the
ringbuffer (which will have been advanced by the addition of new
requests).

With the possibility of addition of many more number of rings in future,
the drm_i915_private structure could bloat as an array, of type

Though this is still fine as generally there is only a single instance of
drm_i915_private structure used, but not all of the possible rings would be

allocating intel_engine_cs structure only for the enabled/active engines.
Currently the engine/ring ID is kept static and dev_priv->engine[] is simply

To save memory and continue using the static engine/ring IDs, 'engine' is

(Note that this causes a temporary subtle change in how we decide when

effect is that if the wait is upon the most current execution the wait
is given for free, instead of checking to see if the client stalled

Chris Wilson 821ed7df6e drm/i915: Update reset path to fix incomplete requests
Update reset path in preparation for engine reset which requires
identification of incomplete requests and associated context and fixing
their state so that engine can resume correctly after reset.

The request that caused the hang will be skipped and head is reset to the
start of breadcrumb. This allows us to resume from where we left-off.
Since this request didn't complete normally we also need to cleanup elsp
queue manually. This is vital if we employ nonblocking request
submission where we may have a web of dependencies upon the hung request
and so advancing the seqno manually is no longer trivial.

ABI: gem_reset_stats / DRM_IOCTL_I915_GET_RESET_STATS

We change the way we count pending batches. Only the active context
involved in the reset is marked as either innocent or guilty, and not
mark the entire world as pending. By inspection this only affects
igt/gem_reset_stats (which assumes implementation details) and not
piglit.

ARB_robustness gives this guide on how we expect the user of this
interface to behave:

 * Provide a mechanism for an OpenGL application to learn about
graphics resets that affect the context. When a graphics reset
occurs, the OpenGL context becomes unusable and the application
must create a new context to continue operation. Detecting a
graphics reset happens through an inexpensive query.

And with regards to the actual meaning of the reset values:

Certain events can result in a reset of the GL context. Such a reset
causes all context state to be lost. Recovery from such events
requires recreation of all objects in the affected context. The
current status of the graphics reset state is returned by

	enum GetGraphicsResetStatusARB();

The symbolic constant returned indicates if the GL context has been
in a reset state at any point since the last call to
GetGraphicsResetStatusARB. NO_ERROR indicates that the GL context
has not been in a reset state since the last call.
GUILTY_CONTEXT_RESET_ARB indicates that a reset has been detected
that is attributable to the current GL context.
INNOCENT_CONTEXT_RESET_ARB indicates a reset has been detected that
is not attributable to the current GL context.
UNKNOWN_CONTEXT_RESET_ARB indicates a detected graphics reset whose
   cause is unknown.

The language here is explicit in that we must mark up the guilty batch,
but is loose enough for us to relax the innocent (i.e. pending)
accounting as only the active batches are involved with the reset.

In the future, we are looking towards single engine resetting (with
minimal locking), where it seems inappropriate to mark the entire world
as innocent since the reset occurred on a different engine. Reducing the
information available means we only have to encounter the pain once, and
also reduces the information leaking from one context to another.

v2: Legacy ringbuffer submission required a reset following hibernation,
or else we restore stale values to the RING_HEAD and walked over
stolen garbage.

v3: GuC requires replaying the requests after a reset.

v4: Restore engine IRQ after reset (so waiters will be woken!)
Rearm hangcheck if resetting with a waiter.

manipulating the elsp queue from reset path we can examine these ports, fix

task, which is an RCU protected struct. When accessing this struct, we
need to be holding the RCU read lock to prevent it disappearing beneath
us. We can use the RCU annotation to mark our irq_seqno_bh pointer as
being under RCU guard and then use the RCU accessors to both provide
correct ordering of access through the pointer.

Most notably, this fixes the access from hard irq context to use the RCU
read lock, which both Daniel and Tvrtko complained about.

Chris Wilson 83348ba84e drm/i915: Move missed interrupt detection from hangcheck to breadcrumbs
In commit 2529d57050 ("drm/i915: Drop racy markup of missed-irqs from
idle-worker") the racy detection of missed interrupts was removed when
we went idle. This however opened up the issue that the stuck waiters
were not being reported, causing a test case failure. If we move the
stuck waiter detection out of hangcheck and into the breadcrumb
mechanims (i.e. the waiter) itself, we can avoid this issue entirely.
This leaves hangcheck looking for a stuck GPU (inspecting for request
advancement and HEAD motion), and breadcrumbs looking for a stuck
waiter - hopefully make both easier to understand by their segregation.

v2: Reduce the error message as we now run independently of hangcheck,
and the hanging batch used by igt also counts as a stuck waiter causing
extra warnings in dmesg.
v3: Move the breadcrumb's hangcheck kickstart to the first missed wait.

Chris Wilson dcff85c844 drm/i915: Enable i915_gem_wait_for_idle() without holding struct_mutex
The principal motivation for this was to try and eliminate the
struct_mutex from i915_gem_suspend - but we still need to hold the mutex
current for the i915_gem_context_lost(). (The issue there is that there
may be an indirect lockdep cycle between cpu_hotplug (i.e. suspend) and
struct_mutex via the stop_machine().) For the moment, enabling last
request tracking for the engine, allows us to do busyness checking and
waiting without requiring the struct_mutex - which is useful in its own
right.

As a side-effect of having a robust means for tracking engine busyness,
we can replace our other busyness heuristic, that of comparing against
the last submitted seqno. For paranoid reasons, we have a semi-ordered
check of that seqno inside the hangchecker, which we can now improve to
an ordered check of the engine's busyness (removing a locked xchg in the
process).

v2: Pass along "bool interruptible" as being unlocked we cannot rely on

Chris Wilson fa545cbf97 drm/i915: Refactor activity tracking for requests
With the introduction of requests, we amplified the number of atomic
refcounted objects we use and update every execbuffer; from none to
several references, and a set of references that need to be changed. We
also introduced interesting side-effects in the order of retiring
requests and objects.

Instead of independently tracking the last request for an object, track
the active objects for each request. The object will reside in the
buffer list of its most recent active request and so we reduce the kref
interchange to a list_move. Now retirements are entirely driven by the
request, dramatically simplifying activity tracking on the object
themselves, and removing the ambiguity between retiring objects and
retiring requests.

Furthermore with the consolidation of managing the activity tracking
centrally, we can look forward to using RCU to enable lockless lookup of
the current active requests for an object. In the future, we will be
able to query the status or wait upon rendering to an object without
even touching the struct_mutex BKL.

All told, less code, simpler and faster, and more extensible.

v2: Add a typedef for the function pointer for convenience later.
v3: Make the noop retirement callback explicit. Allow passing NULL to
the init_request_active() which is expanded to a common noop function.

(eliminating the redundant validation and irq refcounting).

Process context is preferred over softirq (or even hardirq) for a couple
of reasons:

 - we already utilize process context to have fast wakeup of a single
client (i.e. the client waiting for the GPU inspects the seqno for
itself following an interrupt to avoid the overhead of a context
switch before it returns to userspace)

 - engine->irq_seqno() is not suitable for use from an softirq/hardirq

Chris Wilson 688e6c7258 drm/i915: Slaughter the thundering i915_wait_request herd
One particularly stressful scenario consists of many independent tasks
all competing for GPU time and waiting upon the results (e.g. realtime
transcoding of many, many streams). One bottleneck in particular is that
each client waits on its own results, but every client is woken up after
every batchbuffer - hence the thunder of hooves as then every client must
do its heavyweight dance to read a coherent seqno to see if it is the
lucky one.

Ideally, we only want one client to wake up after the interrupt and
check its request for completion. Since the requests must retire in
order, we can select the first client on the oldest request to be woken.
Once that client has completed his wait, we can then wake up the
next client and so on. However, all clients then incur latency as every
process in the chain may be delayed for scheduling - this may also then
cause some priority inversion. To reduce the latency, when a client
is added or removed from the list, we scan the tree for completed
seqno and wake up all the completed waiters in parallel.

Using igt/benchmarks/gem_latency, we can demonstrate this effect. The
benchmark measures the number of GPU cycles between completion of a
batch and the client waking up from a call to wait-ioctl. With many
concurrent waiters, with each on a different request, we observe that
the wakeup latency before the patch scales nearly linearly with the
number of waiters (before external factors kick in making the scaling much
worse). After applying the patch, we can see that only the single waiter
for the request is being woken up, providing a constant wakeup latency
for every operation. However, the situation is not quite as rosy for
many waiters on the same request, though to the best of my knowledge this
is much less likely in practice. Here, we can observe that the
concurrent waiters incur extra latency from being woken up by the
solitary bottom-half, rather than directly by the interrupt. This
appears to be scheduler induced (having discounted adverse effects from
having a rbtree walk/erase in the wakeup path), each additional
wake_up_process() costs approximately 1us on big core. Another effect of
performing the secondary wakeups from the first bottom-half is the
incurred delay this imposes on high priority threads - rather than
immediately returning to userspace and leaving the interrupt handler to
wake the others.

To offset the delay incurred with additional waiters on a request, we
could use a hybrid scheme that did a quick read in the interrupt handler
and dequeued all the completed waiters (incurring the overhead in the
interrupt handler, not the best plan either as we then incur GPU
submission latency) but we would still have to wake up the bottom-half
every time to do the heavyweight slow read. Or we could only kick the
waiters on the seqno with the same priority as the current task (i.e. in
the realtime waiter scenario, only it is woken up immediately by the
interrupt and simply queues the next waiter before returning to userspace,
minimising its delay at the expense of the chain, and also reducing
contention on its scheduler runqueue). This is effective at avoid long
pauses in the interrupt handler and at avoiding the extra latency in
realtime/high-priority waiters.

v2: Convert from a kworker per engine into a dedicated kthread for the
bottom-half.
v3: Rename request members and tweak comments.

v18: Return early for a completed wait after acquiring the spinlock.

skips the awkward question of why we don't do completion wakeups for
waits earlier than or equal to ourselves.
v19: Prepare for init_breadcrumbs to fail. Later patches may want to
allocate during init, so be prepared to propagate back the error code.

Tvrtko Ursulin 3756685a18 drm/i915: Only grab correct forcewake for the engine with execlists
Rather than blindly waking up all forcewake domains on command
submission, we can teach each engine what is (or are) the correct
one to take.

On platforms with multiple forcewake domains like VLV, CHV, SKL
and BXT, this has the potential of lowering the GPU and CPU
power use and submission latency.

To implement it we add a function named
intel_uncore_forcewake_for_reg whose purpose is to query which
forcewake domains need to be taken to read or write a specific
register with raw mmio accessors.

These enables the execlists engine setup to query which
forcewake domains are relevant per engine on the currently
running platform.

v2:
  * Kerneldoc.
  * Split from intel_uncore.c macro extraction, WARN_ON,
no warns on old platforms. (Chris Wilson)

v3:
  * Single domain per engine, mention all registers,
bi-directional function and a new name, fix handling
of gen6 and gen7 writes. (Chris Wilson)

Chris Wilson 5dd8e50c27 drm/i915: Replace manual barrier() with READ_ONCE() in HWS accessor
When reading from the HWS page, we use barrier() to prevent the compiler
optimising away the read from the volatile (may be updated by the GPU)

Tvrtko Ursulin 27af5eea54 drm/i915: Move execlists irq handler to a bottom half
Doing a lot of work in the interrupt handler introduces huge
latencies to the system as a whole.

config is lean enough, the whole system can be brought into
multi-second periods of complete non-interactivty. That can

I could not explain, or find a code path, which would explain
a +20 second lockup, but from some instrumentation it was
apparent the interrupts off proportion of time was between
10-25% under heavy load which is quite bad.

When a interrupt "cliff" is reached, which was >~320k irq/s on
my machine, the whole system goes into a terrible state of the
above described multi-second lockups.

By moving the GT interrupt handling to a tasklet in a most
simple way, the problem above disappears completely.

Testing the effect on sytem-wide latencies using
igt/gem_syslatency shows the following before this patch:

gem_syslatency: cycles=1532739, latency mean=416531.829us max=2499237us
gem_syslatency: cycles=1839434, latency mean=1458099.157us max=4998944us
gem_syslatency: cycles=1432570, latency mean=2688.451us max=1201185us
gem_syslatency: cycles=1533543, latency mean=416520.499us max=2498886us

This shows that the unrelated process is experiencing huge
delays in its wake-up latency. After the patch the results
look like this:

gem_syslatency: cycles=808907, latency mean=53.133us max=1640us
gem_syslatency: cycles=862154, latency mean=62.778us max=2117us
gem_syslatency: cycles=856039, latency mean=58.079us max=2123us
gem_syslatency: cycles=841683, latency mean=56.914us max=1667us

Showing a huge improvement in the unrelated process wake-up
latency. It also shows an approximate halving in the number
of total empty batches submitted during the test. This may
not be worrying since the test puts the driver under
a very unrealistic load with ncpu threads doing empty batch
submission to all GPU engines each.

Another benefit compared to the hard-irq handling is that now
work on all engines can be dispatched in parallel since we can
have up to number of CPUs active tasklets. (While previously
a single hard-irq would serially dispatch on one engine after
another.)

More interesting scenario with regards to throughput is
"gem_latency -n 100" which shows 25% better throughput and
CPU usage, and 14% better dispatch latencies.

I did not find any gains or regressions with Synmark2 or
GLbench under light testing. More benchmarking is certainly
required.

v2:
   * execlists_lock should be taken as spin_lock_bh when
queuing work from userspace now. (Chris Wilson)
   * uncore.lock must be taken with spin_lock_irq when
submitting requests since that now runs from either
     softirq or process context.

v3:
   * Expanded commit message with more testing data;
   * converted missed locking sites to _bh;
   * added execlist_lock comment. (Chris Wilson)

v4:
   * Mention dispatch parallelism in commit. (Chris Wilson)
   * Do not hold uncore.lock over MMIO reads since the block
is already serialised per-engine via the tasklet itself.
     (Chris Wilson)
   * intel_lrc_irq_handler should be static. (Chris Wilson)
   * Cancel/sync the tasklet on GPU reset. (Chris Wilson)
   * Document and WARN that tasklet cannot be active/pending

With full-ppgtt, it takes the GPU an eon to traverse the entire 256PiB
address space, causing a loop to be detected. Under the current scheme,
if ACTHD walks off the end of a batch buffer and into an empty
address space, we "never" detect the hang. If we always increment the
score as the ACTHD is progressing then we will eventually timeout (after
~46.5s (31 * 1.5s) without advancing onto a new batch). To counter act
this, increase the amount we reduce the score for good batches, so that
only a series of almost-bad batches trigger a full reset. DoS detection
suffers slightly but series of long running shader tests will benefit.

Based on a patch from Chris Wilson.

Tvrtko Ursulin c6a2ac712d drm/i915: Execlists small cleanups and micro-optimisations
Assorted changes in the areas of code cleanup, reduction of
invariant conditional in the interrupt handler and lock
contention and MMIO access optimisation.

 * Remove needless initialization.
 * Improve cache locality by reorganizing code and/or using
branch hints to keep unexpected or error conditions out
   of line.
 * Favor busy submit path vs. empty queue.
 * Less branching in hot-paths.

v2:

 * Avoid mmio reads when possible. (Chris Wilson)
 * Use natural integer size for csb indices.
 * Remove useless return value from execlists_update_context.
 * Extract 32-bit ppgtt PDPs update so it is out of line and
   shared with two callers.
 * Grab forcewake across all mmio operations to ease the
load on uncore lock and use chepear mmio ops.

v3:

 * Removed some more pointless u8 data types.
 * Removed unused return from execlists_context_queue.
 * Commit message updates.

v4:
 * Unclumsify the unqueue if statement. (Chris Wilson)
 * Hide forcewake from the queuing function. (Chris Wilson)

Version 3 now makes the irq handling code path ~20% smaller on
48-bit PPGTT hardware, and a little bit less elsewhere. Hot
paths are mostly in-line now and hammering on the uncore
spinlock is greatly reduced together with mmio traffic to an
extent.

Benchmarking with "gem_latency -n 100" (keep submitting
batches with 100 nop instruction) shows approximately 4% higher
throughput, 2% less CPU time and 22% smaller latencies. This was
on a big-core while small-cores could benefit even more.

Most likely reason for the improvements are the MMIO
optimization and uncore lock traffic reduction.

One odd result is with "gem_latency -n 0" (dispatching empty
batches) which shows 5% more throughput, 8% less CPU time,
25% better producer and consumer latencies, but 15% higher
dispatch latency which is yet unexplained.

Chris Wilson 426960bed3 drm/i915: Seal busy-ioctl uABI and prevent leaking of internal ids
Tvrtko was looking through the execbuffer-ioctl and noticed that the
uABI was tightly coupled to our internal engine identifiers. Close
inspection also revealed that we leak those internal engine identifiers
through the busy-ioctl, and those internal identifiers already do not
match the user identifiers. Fortuitiously, there is only one user of the
set of busy rings from the busy-ioctl, and they only wish to choose
between the RENDER and the BLT engines.

Let's fix the userspace ABI while we still can.

v2: Update the uAPI documentation to explain the identifiers.

Tvrtko Ursulin de1add3605 drm/i915: Decouple execbuf uAPI from internal implementation
At the moment execbuf ring selection is fully coupled to
internal ring ids which is not a good thing on its own.

This dependency is also spread between two source files and
not spelled out at either side which makes it hidden and
fragile.

This patch decouples this dependency by introducing an explicit
translation table of execbuf uAPI to ring id close to the only
call site (i915_gem_do_execbuffer).

This way we are free to change driver internal implementation
details without breaking userspace. All state relating to the
uAPI is now contained in, or next to, i915_gem_do_execbuffer.

As a side benefit, this patch decreases the compiled size
of i915_gem_do_execbuffer.

Dave Gordon ed54c1a1d1 drm/i915: abolish separate per-ring default_context pointers
Now that we've eliminated a lot of uses of ring->default_context,
we can eliminate the pointer itself.

All the engines share the same default intel_context, so we can just
keep a single reference to it in the dev_priv structure rather than one
in each of the engine[] elements. This make refcounting more sensible
too, as we now have a refcount of one for the one pointer, rather than
a refcount of one but multiple pointers.

Dave Gordon b0366a54b4 drm/i915: intel_ring_initialized() must be simple and inline
Based on Chris Wilson's patch from 6 months ago, rebased and adapted.

The current implementation of intel_ring_initialized() is too heavyweight;
it's a non-inlined function that chases several levels of pointers. This
wouldn't matter too much if it were rarely called, but it's used inside
the iterator test of for_each_ring() and is therefore called quite
frequently. So let's make it simple and inline ...

The idea here is to use ring->dev as an indicator showing which engines
have been initialised and are therefore to be included in iterations that
use for_each_ring(). This allows us to avoid multiple memory references
and a (non-inlined) function call on each iteration of each such loop.

Ville Syrjälä f0f59a00a1 drm/i915: Type safe register read/write
Make I915_READ and I915_WRITE more type safe by wrapping the register
offset in a struct. This should eliminate most of the fumbles we've had
with misplaced parens.

This only takes care of normal mmio registers. We could extend the idea
to other register types and define each with its own struct. That way
you wouldn't be able to accidentally pass the wrong thing to a specific
register access function.

The gpio_reg setup is probably the ugliest thing left. But I figure I'd
just leave it for now, and wait for some divine inspiration to strike
before making it nice.

As for the generated code, it's actually a bit better sometimes. Eg.
looking at i915_irq_handler(), we can see the following change:
  lea 0x70024(%rdx,%rax,1),%r9d
  mov $0x1,%edx
- movslq %r9d,%r9
- mov %r9,%rsi
- mov %r9,-0x58(%rbp)
- callq *0xd8(%rbx)
+ mov %r9d,%esi
+ mov %r9d,-0x48(%rbp)
 callq *0xd8(%rbx)

So previously gcc thought the register offset might be signed and
decided to sign extend it, just in case. The rest appears to be
mostly just minor shuffling of instructions.

Imre Deak 319404df2f drm/i915/bxt: work around HW coherency issue when accessing GPU seqno
By running igt/store_dword_loop_render on BXT we can hit a coherency
problem where the seqno written at GPU command completion time is not
seen by the CPU. This results in __i915_wait_request seeing the stale
seqno and not completing the request (not considering the lost
interrupt/GPU reset mechanism). I also verified that this isn't a case
of a lost interrupt, or that the command didn't complete somehow: when
the coherency issue occured I read the seqno via an uncached GTT mapping
too. While the cached version of the seqno still showed the stale value
the one read via the uncached mapping was the correct one.

Work around this issue by clflushing the corresponding CPU cacheline
following any store of the seqno and preceding any reading of it. When
reading it do this only when the caller expects a coherent view.

Tomas Elf 94f7bbe150 drm/i915: Snapshot seqno of most recently submitted request.
The hang checker needs to inspect whether or not the ring request list is empty
as well as if the given engine has reached or passed the most recently
submitted request. The problem with this is that the hang checker cannot grab
the struct_mutex, which is required in order to safely inspect requests since
requests might be deallocated during inspection. In the past we've had kernel
panics due to this very unsynchronized access in the hang checker.

One solution to this problem is to not inspect the requests directly since
we're only interested in the seqno of the most recently submitted request - not
the request itself. Instead the seqno of the most recently submitted request is
stored separately, which the hang checker then inspects, circumventing the
issue of synchronization from the hang checker entirely.

John Harrison 79bbcc299f drm/i915: Reserve space improvements
An earlier patch was added to reserve space in the ring buffer for the
commands issued during 'add_request()'. The initial version was
pessimistic in the way it handled buffer wrapping and would cause
premature wraps and thus waste ring space.

This patch updates the code to better handle the wrap case. It no
longer enforces that the space being asked for and the reserved space
are a single contiguous block. Instead, it allows the reserve to be on
the far end of a wrap operation. It still guarantees that the space is
available so when the wrap occurs, no wait will happen. Thus the wrap
cannot fail which is the whole point of the exercise.

Also fixed a merge failure with some comments from the original patch.

v2: Incorporated suggestion by David Gordon to move the wrap code
inside the prepare function and thus allow a single combined
wait_for_space() call rather than doing one before the wrap and
another after. This also makes the prepare code much simpler and
easier to follow.

v3: Fix for 'effective_size' vs 'size' during ring buffer remainder
calculations (spotted by Tomas Elf).
