net: qcom/emac: do not use hardware mdio automatic polling Use software polling (PHY_POLL) to check for link state changes instead of relying on the EMAC's hardware polling feature. Some PHY drivers are unable to get a functioning link because the HW polling is not robust enough. The EMAC is able to poll the PHY on the MDIO bus looking for link state changes (via the Link Status bit in the Status Register at address 0x1). When the link state changes, the EMAC triggers an interrupt and tells the driver what the new state is. The feature eliminates the need for software to poll the MDIO bus. Unfortunately, this feature is incompatible with phylib, because it ignores everything that the PHY core and PHY drivers are trying to do. In particular: 1. It assumes a compatible register set, so PHYs with different registers may not work. 2. It doesn't allow for hardware errata that have work-arounds implemented in the PHY driver. 3. It doesn't support multiple register pages. If the PHY core switches the register set to another page, the EMAC won't know the page has changed and will still attempt to read the same PHY register. 4. It only checks the copper side of the link, not the SGMII side. Some PHY drivers (e.g. at803x) may also check the SGMII side, and report the link as not ready during autonegotiation if the SGMII link is still down. Phylib then waits for another interrupt to query the PHY again, but the EMAC won't send another interrupt because it thinks the link is up. drivers/net/ethernet: clean up mis-targeted comments As part of the W=1 cleanups for ethernet, a million [*] driver comments had to be cleaned up to get the W=1 compilation to succeed. This change finally makes the drivers/net/ethernet tree compile with W=1 set on the command line. NOTE: The kernel uses kdoc style (see Documentation/process/kernel-doc.rst) when documenting code, not doxygen or other styles. After this patch the x86_64 build has no warnings from W=1, however scripts/kernel-doc says there are 1545 more warnings in source files, that I need to develop a script to fix in a followup patch. The errors fixed here are all kdoc of a few classes, with a few outliers: In file included from drivers/net/ethernet/qlogic/netxen/netxen_nic_hw.c:10: drivers/net/ethernet/qlogic/netxen/netxen_nic.h:1193:18: warning: ‘FW_DUMP_LEVELS’ defined but not used [-Wunused-const-variable=] 1193 | static const u32 FW_DUMP_LEVELS[] = { 0x3, 0x7, 0xf, 0x1f, 0x3f, 0x7f, 0xff }; | ^~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ... repeats 4 times... drivers/net/ethernet/sun/cassini.c:2084:24: warning: suggest braces around empty body in an ‘else’ statement [-Wempty-body] 2084 | RX_USED_ADD(page, i); drivers/net/ethernet/natsemi/ns83820.c: In function ‘phy_intr’: drivers/net/ethernet/natsemi/ns83820.c:603:6: warning: variable ‘tbisr’ set but not used [-Wunused-but-set-variable] 603 | u32 tbisr, tanar, tanlpar; | ^~~~~ drivers/net/ethernet/natsemi/ns83820.c: In function ‘ns83820_get_link_ksettings’: drivers/net/ethernet/natsemi/ns83820.c:1207:11: warning: variable ‘tanar’ set but not used [-Wunused-but-set-variable] 1207 | u32 cfg, tanar, tbicr; | ^~~~~ drivers/net/ethernet/packetengines/yellowfin.c:1063:18: warning: variable ‘yf_size’ set but not used [-Wunused-but-set-variable] 1063 | int data_size, yf_size; | ^~~~~~~ Normal kdoc fixes: warning: Function parameter or member 'x' not described in 'y' warning: Excess function parameter 'x' description in 'y' warning: Cannot understand <string> on line <NNN> - I thought it was a doc line [*] - ok it wasn't quite a million, but it felt like it. ethernet: use net core MTU range checking in more drivers Somehow, I missed a healthy number of ethernet drivers in the last pass. Most of these drivers either were in need of an updated max_mtu to make jumbo frames possible to enable again. In a few cases, also setting a different min_mtu to match previous lower bounds. There are also a few drivers that had no upper bounds checking, so they're getting a brand new ETH_MAX_MTU that is identical to IP_MAX_MTU, but accessible by includes all ethernet and ethernet-like drivers all have already. acenic: - min_mtu = 0, max_mtu = 9000 amazon/ena: - min_mtu = 128, max_mtu = adapter->max_mtu amd/xgbe: - min_mtu = 0, max_mtu = 9000 sb1250: - min_mtu = 0, max_mtu = 1518 cxgb3: - min_mtu = 81, max_mtu = 65535 cxgb4: - min_mtu = 81, max_mtu = 9600 cxgb4vf: - min_mtu = 81, max_mtu = 65535 benet: - min_mtu = 256, max_mtu = 9000 ibmveth: - min_mtu = 68, max_mtu = 65535 ibmvnic: - min_mtu = adapter->min_mtu, max_mtu = adapter->max_mtu - remove now redundant ibmvnic_change_mtu jme: - min_mtu = 1280, max_mtu = 9202 mv643xx_eth: - min_mtu = 64, max_mtu = 9500 mlxsw: - min_mtu = 0, max_mtu = 65535 - Basically bypassing the core checks, and instead relying on dynamic checks in the respective switch drivers' ndo_change_mtu functions ns83820: - min_mtu = 0 - remove redundant ns83820_change_mtu, only checked for mtu > 1500 netxen: - min_mtu = 0, max_mtu = 8000 (P2), max_mtu = 9600 (P3) qlge: - min_mtu = 1500, max_mtu = 9000 - driver only supports setting mtu to 1500 or 9000, so the core check only rules out < 1500 and > 9000, qlge_change_mtu still needs to check that the value is 1500 or 9000 qualcomm/emac: - min_mtu = 46, max_mtu = 9194 xilinx_axienet: - min_mtu = 64, max_mtu = 9000 Fixes: 61e84623ace3 ("net: centralize net_device min/max MTU checking") CC: netdev@vger.kernel.org CC: Jes Sorensen <jes@trained-monkey.org> CC: Netanel Belgazal <netanel@annapurnalabs.com> CC: Tom Lendacky <thomas.lendacky@amd.com> CC: Santosh Raspatur <santosh@chelsio.com> CC: Hariprasad S <hariprasad@chelsio.com> CC: Sathya Perla <sathya.perla@broadcom.com> CC: Ajit Khaparde <ajit.khaparde@broadcom.com> CC: Sriharsha Basavapatna <sriharsha.basavapatna@broadcom.com> CC: Somnath Kotur <somnath.kotur@broadcom.com> CC: Thomas Falcon <tlfalcon@linux.vnet.ibm.com> CC: John Allen <jallen@linux.vnet.ibm.com> CC: Guo-Fu Tseng <cooldavid@cooldavid.org> CC: Sebastian Hesselbarth <sebastian.hesselbarth@gmail.com> CC: Jiri Pirko <jiri@mellanox.com> CC: Ido Schimmel <idosch@mellanox.com> CC: Manish Chopra <manish.chopra@qlogic.com> CC: Sony Chacko <sony.chacko@qlogic.com> CC: Rajesh Borundia <rajesh.borundia@qlogic.com> CC: Timur Tabi <timur@codeaurora.org> CC: Anirudha Sarangi <anirudh@xilinx.com> CC: John Linn <John.Linn@xilinx.com> Signed-off-by: Jarod Wilson <jarod@redhat.com> Signed-off-by: David S.
